Abstract:Background: Marketing has a significant impact on the normalisation of gambling for youth across the globe. This has included shaping positive attitudes towards gambling, as well as increasing the social and cultural acceptance of gambling - particularly aligned with valued activities such as sport. Because of this, public health experts argue that gambling marketing poses a significant risk to the health and wellbeing of youth. While young people are increasingly exposed to, and impacted by marketing for gambling products, they are rarely consulted about policy issues and options. This study aimed to explore young Australians' perceptions of current policy responses to gambling advertising, whether they thought young people should be involved in discussions and decisions about gambling marketing regulations, and their perceptions of the duty of governments to protect young people from gambling industry marketing strategies. Methods: Qualitative focus groups (n = 22) were held with n = 64, 12-17 year olds in the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales. Participants were asked to reflect on current gambling policies, particularly relating to marketing, what they thought should be done about gambling marketing, and if and how young people should be included in public health responses to gambling. An interpretivist 'Big Q' approach to reflexive thematic analysis was used. Results: Young people highlighted the need for more effective regulations around the content and frequency of gambling marketing. They also wanted to see more realistic representations of the negative impacts of gambling to counter persistent positive commercial marketing messages. Most thought that young people should be given an opportunity to have a say about responses to gambling due to their unique experiences. Participants identified mechanisms to increase young people's engagement in decision making, such as direct lines of communication to different levels of government, involvement in research, and diversifying ways of engagement. Specific recommendations included more regulatory action such as bans on gambling advertising. Conclusions: Creating formal structures that facilitate the inclusion of young people's perspectives in decisions made about gambling can result in more innovative and effective strategies to prevent the harms from gambling industry products, promotions, and practices.

Abstract:Abstract Young people’s exposure to gambling marketing has had a clear impact on their gambling attitudes, risk perceptions and consumption intentions. Celebrities and social media influencers (SMIs) are increasingly used by the gambling industry in a wide range of promotions. While there is evidence that these types of promotions are influential in shaping young people’s attitudes towards other harmful products, there is limited evidence in relation to gambling. Qualitative focus groups (n = 22) with n = 64, 12–17 year olds were conducted in Australia. These investigated young people’s exposure to celebrity and SMI marketing for gambling and the influence they perceived this marketing had on young people’s gambling attitudes. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to construct four themes from the data. First, young people perceived that celebrities and SMIs created additional appeal and recall of gambling advertisements because they were attention grabbing and familiar. Second, young people thought that celebrities and SMIs increased the trust, legitimacy and social acceptance of gambling. Third, the use of celebrities and SMIs lowered the perceptions of risk associated with gambling. Lastly, there were suggestions to reduce the impact of celebrity and SMI gambling promotions on young people, such as bans and restrictions. This study highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach to preventing young people’s exposure to gambling marketing, that not only considers imposing stronger regulations to restrict the way the gambling industry is allowed to promote its products, but also aims to counter the novel ways the gambling industry attempts to appeal to children and young people.

Methods: Mixed methods study of 111 young people aged 11-16 years recruited from community basketball stadiums in Victoria, Australia, between May and July 2018. Interviewer-assisted surveys investigated recall and awareness of sports betting brands, perceptions of promotional strategies, intention to gamble, and reasons for betting on particular sports. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and χ2 tests. Thematic analyses were used to interpret qualitative responses. Results: Young people had high recall and awareness of advertising, with most able to name at least one betting brand (n = 90, 81.1%), and many demonstrating a high awareness of the distinct characteristics (such as colors and appeal strategies) of different brands. A fifth of young people (n = 25, 22.5%) expressed intentions to gamble at 18 years, with boys significantly more likely than girls to state they would gamble (χ2 = 10.90, p = .001). Young people perceived that advertising strategies associated with inducement promotions would be the most influential in encouraging individuals to gamble. While many young people took promotions at face value, there was evidence that some were able to critically engage with and challenge the messages within marketing. Discussion and conclusions: Current regulatory structures appear to be ineffective in limiting young people's recall and awareness of gambling advertising. Lessons from tobacco control support the application of precautionary approaches as a more effective way to limit young people's development of positive gambling attitudes and behaviors.

The majority stated that they continued to watch sport after 8:30 pm (n = 93, 83.7%), which is when restrictions on advertising in live sport in Australia end. The majority (n = 88, 79.3%) stated that there were too many gambling advertisements in sport. Three quarters believed that sporting codes should do more to prevent young people from being exposed to advertising for gambling in sport (n = 84, 75.7%). Conclusions: There is now a clear body evidence that current regulatory systems for gambling advertising are ineffective, with further restrictions urgently needed across a range of media channels to prevent exposure to promotions that may encourage young people's interest and involvement in gambling.

Abstract:Background: The gambling industry has developed many types of gambling on Internet in recent years. Gambling is a social activity for a majority of the world population, but problem gambling (PG) can emerge. The trajectories of gamblers from initiation to PG development are influenced by many variables, including individual and environmental variables and also variables linked to the gambling characteristics. Marketing has been reported to influence gamblers' perceptions and behaviors, but this is not as clear for digital marketing. Digital gambling marketing is broad, ranging from the marketing of gambling websites to communication and advertising on the social media and networks. The objective of this article was to fill this gap by conducting a systematic literature review in order to answer the following questions: (1) What are the strategies of digital gambling marketing? (2) What is the effect of this exposure on gambling representations, intentions and practices? Method: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines on Pubmed database (Medline) from February 2020 to March 2020 and Scopus. Existing papers published between January 2000 and February 2020 were identified by searching with this algorithm: (((“internet”[MeSH Major Topic] OR (communications[All Fields] AND media[All Fields])) OR (“social media”[MeSH Terms] OR (“social”[All Fields] AND “media”[All Fields]) OR “social media”[All Fields])) AND “gambling”[MeSH Major Topic]) AND (“marketing”[MeSH Terms] OR “marketing”[All Fields]), in title, keywords or abstract. Results: Ninety-one candidate studies were selected, 21 studies were selected for the systematic review. Sport appeared as a specific target of online gambling marketing. A growing range of platforms for online sport betting and the development of strategies on the social media were identified. Regarding content, a systematic association between sport and gambling was highlighted. Vulnerable populations, such as young people, appeared to be at high risk of exposure to gambling marketing. Conclusion: Little data is available on the strategies of digital gambling marketing or on exposure to it. Sport could be the first target for future research to understand how the industry is targeting specific populations, and what influence these strategies could have on PG development.

Abstract:Studies have raised concerns regarding how gambling advertising influences young people, particularly in relation to normalizing and glamourising the activity. This paper scrutinizes the accuracy of claims made in the existing literature on how gambling advertising influences young people by critically analyzing studies' methodologies. A total of 19 studies were suitable for the review. Five primary criteria were used to evaluate studies: 1) representativeness of young people; 2) gambling outcome measures (dependent variables); 3) advertising exposure measures (independent variables); 4) consideration of third variables; and 5) use of comparisons. It was generally found that awareness of and attitudes toward gambling, as well as self-reported gambling behavior, were influenced by gambling advertising. However, intentions to gamble were not markedly influenced by gambling advertising. These findings are discussed in light of the methodological limitations of each of these outcomes. Measures of exposure to advertising were found to be speculative and did not consider that gambling advertising is often targeted at consumers and that interest in gambling likely influences the reporting of exposure to gambling advertising. The paper concludes with methodological considerations for future research, such as the use of real exposure to advertising and the evaluation of responsible gambling messages.

Abstract:Internet gambling has become a popular activity among some youth. Vulnerable youth may be particularly at risk due to limited harm reduction and enforcement measures. This article explores age restrictions and other harm reduction measures relating to youth and young adult online gambling. A systematic rapid review was conducted by searching eight databases. Additional articles on online gambling (e.g., from references) were later included. To place this perspective into context, articles on adult gambling, land-based gambling, and substance use and other problematic behaviors were also considered. Several studies show promising findings for legally restricting youth from gambling in that such restrictions may reduce the amount of youth gambling and gambling-related harms. However, simply labeling an activity as "age-restricted" may not deter youth from gambling; in some instances, it may generate increased appeal for gambling. Therefore, advertising and warning labels should be examined in conjunction with age restrictions. Recommendations for age enforcement strategies, advertising, education, and warning labels are made to help multiple stakeholders including policymakers and public health officials internationally. Age restrictions in online gambling should consider multiple populations including youth and young adults. Prevention and harm reduction in gambling should examine how age-restriction strategies may affect problem gambling and how they may be best enforced across gambling platforms. More research is needed to protect youth with respect to online gambling.

Abstract:In vitro evidence presently favors a direct osteolytic effect of biologically active vitamin D metabolites. Studies were designed to evaluate the effect of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD3) on bone collagen and mineral maturation in vivo and its dependence on parathyroid hormone (PTH). After treatment of sham-operated control and parathyroidectomized (PTX) mature rats with either 25OHD3 or an oil vehicle for 2 wk, tibial bone mineral-collagen maturation was quantitated by bromoform-toluene density gradient fractionation techniques. Intestinal calcium absorption was measured by in vivo 45Ca transport procedures. In contrast to the control group, the response to 25OHD3 of PTX rats was dramatic. Bone mineral and matrix maturation were both accelerated by 25OHD3 treatment without concomitant reduction in total bone mineral or collagen content or changes in the intestinal calcium absorption. These observations support the premise that biologically active vitamin D metabolites stimulate bone tissue maturation, and that PTH is not required in this regard.

Abstract:In this qualitative study on "Cultivating Critical Minds: Interdisciplinary Strategies for Empowering University Students against Online Gambling Propaganda," researchers have uncovered critical insights from experts spanning fields like Psychology, Public Health Science, Communication Arts, Law, and Information Technology. Conducted between December 2022 and January 2023, this research brings to light several key findings: 1) Lack of Awareness and Understanding: A significant issue is the lack of awareness among university students regarding the risks associated with online gambling. This knowledge gap can lead to adverse consequences such as depression and financial distress. Abstract:Gambling marketing, which has been reported to influence consumer perceptions and behavior, has attracted growing academic, public and policy interest. There are fewer qualitative studies with young adults however and no research has explored how gambling marketing is viewed by people in Ireland who gamble. One-to-one interviews were conducted with 18–34 year-olds in Ireland, with 8 considered low-risk (those scoring fewer than 3 on the Problem Gambling Severity Index [PGSI]) and 8 high-risk (those scoring 8 or more on the PGSI). Discussions were thematically analyzed. Participants reported high exposure to gambling marketing, most commonly on television and online. They were familiar with myriad gambling-related promotions, including new customer/sign-up offers, free or matched bets/spins, price offers and bonuses, time-limited bets and offers, risk-minimizing offers, jackpots, prizes, and loyalty/rewards schemes. Gambling marketing was thought to influence behavior by prompting participants to place a bet or take advantage of offers and promotions, with participants indicating they had or would bet or deposit more than intended to benefit from an offer or promotion. The findings provide insight into how young adults in Ireland perceive and respond to gambling industry marketing.

Abstract:Background : Sports betting is becoming increasingly common among young people in the UK and Australia. There is a need to understand how the marketing of sports betting may influence risky and pathological gambling to inform policies aimed at reducing harm. This study examines whether sports betting advertising may predict problem gambling scores among young people, while accounting for non-marketing variables. Methods : We recruited 567 participants (53.1% male) aged 18–24 years from an online research panel. Participants were eligible if they had an active betting account and regularly bet on sports. We conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to examine whether four marketing-related measures (exposure to advertising, ad-driven betting decisions, use of betting inducements, and perceived susceptibility to betting inducements) could predict PGSI scores. We controlled for several demographic, psychological, and behavioural variables, including gender, gambling participation, spend per session, participation in in-play betting, normative beliefs about sports betting, and impulsivity. Results : The study revealed that sports betting marketing was positively associated with PGSI scores after controlling for non-marketing variables. Significant marketing predictors included ad-driven betting decisions and perceived influence from betting inducements. Other significant predictors included participation in non-sports betting gambling activities, spend per session, involvement in in-play betting, and the impulsivity trait of negative urgency. Conclusion : Sports betting marketing appears to be implicated in young people's gambling problems. Specifically, young people who have gambling problems may be more likely to bet in response to advertising, and betting incentives may contribute to an intensification of their gambling behaviour. This study supports the implementation of regulations and restrictions on advertising as a measure to protect young problem gamblers.

Abstract:Background: The impact of gambling advertisements shown during sporting events on young people is an important public health issue. While extensive research has taken place in Australia, there is still only a limited understanding of this issue in the United Kingdom (UK). Method: A mixed methods study was conducted with 71 family groups comprised of 99 young people (8-16 years) and 71 adults recruited at six sites across South London, England (May-July 2018). Interviewer-assisted surveys investigated recall and awareness of sports betting brands using interviews and a magnet placement board activity developed in Australia. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, with qualitative data interpreted using thematic analysis techniques. Results: Just under half of young people (n = 46, 46%) and more than two thirds of adults (n = 49, 71%) were able, unprompted, to name at least one gambling brand. Boys had a significantly higher recall of brands than girls, as did young people who watched a lot of football on television. Almost two thirds of young people (n = 63, 63%) correctly placed one or more shirt sponsor magnets next to the corresponding football team, and 30% (n = 30) correctly placed three or more sponsors magnets next to the corresponding football team. Just under two thirds of adults (n = 44, 62%) correctly placed one or more shirt sponsors magnets next to the corresponding football team. Young people recalled seeing gambling advertising on television (n = 78), technology/screens (n = 49), and in association with sports teams (n = 43). Adults recalled seeing advertising on television (n = 56), on technology/screens (n = 37), in sports stadiums (n = 34), and in betting venues (n = 34). Over three quarters of young people (n = 74 out of 95 responses, 78%) and 86% of adults (n = 59 out of 69 responses) thought that betting had become a normal part of sport. Conclusion: In order to reduce the exposure of young people to gambling advertising, policymakers in the UK should consider comprehensive approaches, similar to those applied in tobacco control, which cover all forms of advertising, including promotion and sponsorship.
Embracing public health approaches to gambling? A review of global legislative and regulatory trends

Abstract:Abstract Background/Issue The public health community has increasingly called for governments to recognise the health harms associated with gambling, and for prevention policies to include population-based approaches. Whether and to what extent these calls have translated into actual policy-making globally has not been investigated. Our paper fills this gap. Methods Using Vixio Gambling Compliance database, we mapped the global availability of legal forms of gambling, changes in its provision, and the prevalence of gambling harm prevention policies. Using global case studies of 33 jurisdictions from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Americas that introduced major changes to their gambling legislation in 2018-2021, we further analysed the extent to which protection of health and wellbeing is a priority within a changing gambling legislation and explored the extent to which individual- and population-based approaches to gambling-related harms are being integrated into policy. Results We find that over 80% of countries globally now permit gambling. Among the jurisdictions changing their gambling policies, protection of health and wellbeing is often secondary to revenue growth. Most prevention policies focus on individual responsibility and few jurisdictions aim to address the political, economic, or commercial determinants of gambling harms. Conclusions/Lessons Addressing gambling as a public health issue, thus, is not yet translating into comprehensive policy action across jurisdictions. This is a concern, given that legislative frameworks set the agenda for the regulation of gambling and the actions implemented. By providing new systematic comparative data on responses to gambling-related harms globally this paper will be useful both for public health researchers, and for health policy-makers and advocates around the globe looking to understand how other countries/jurisdictions are responding to this public health challenge. Key messages • While over 80% of countries globally now permit gambling, addressing gambling as a public health issue is not yet translating into comprehensive policy action across jurisdictions. • Most newly introduced prevention policies focus on individual responsibility and few jurisdictions aim to address the political, economic, or commercial determinants of gambling harms.

Abstract:The government has launched a review into British gambling law "to make sure it is fit for the digital age". A coalition of activists has proposed a range of anti-gambling measures, including an advertising ban, low stake limits, a monthly spending cap, slower gameplay, and a ban on VIP schemes, bonuses and inducements. Despite the perception of a gambling "epidemic" in Britain, the number of people who gamble has not risen in the last decade, and there has been no rise in the rate of problem gambling since 1999. The number of children who gamble has halved since 2011. In real terms, the amount spent on gambling has declined since 2015. Many of the policies proposed by the anti-gambling coalition would be incompatible with the government’s stated aim of respecting "the enjoyment people get from gambling" and "the freedom of adults to choose how they spend their money". There is little evidence that an advertising ban would have any impact on problem gambling. A ban on sponsorship would similarly hinder licensed operators from establishing their brands and compromise many sports without yielding any benefits. Stake limits for online games would make them unplayable for many gamblers. This is not regulation in the normal sense, but a form of neo-prohibition that would drive players to unlicensed, unregulated, and untaxed websites and undermine the key objectives of British gambling law. However, the technology exists to track harmful patterns of play and intervene. Sophisticated algorithms and timely interventions for the minority of high-risk gamblers are more effective than simplistic, blunt tools. The ability of "Big Data" to identify problem gamblers and prevent harm is unlike anything we have seen before. Regulated online operators use a range of practical harm reduction measures, which advance the government’s objectives without infringing on the rights of the average punter or handing a competitive advantage to the unregulated sector. Not every company uses their technology to prevent harm in the same way, but best practice could be made standard through regulation. It is these practical solutions that could be the focus of the government’s review.

Abstract:Dear Editor, We read with great interest the recent article comparing the mechanisms under muscle wasting in quadriceps and diaphragm using an animal model by Mangner et al. While muscle wasting in heart failure (HF) patients is associated with poor exercise capacity and prognosis, current clinical evidences in therapeutic approach have been limited to ones by exercise training. As the author referred in their introduction, however, the function in diaphragm may be impaired in HF even though HF may induce ‘training-like’ benefit on diaphragm. This notion suggests that there may be some possible mechanisms other than deconditioning under wasting in diaphragm, and the results in this article would be one of them, namely, lack of elevation in oxidative enzyme activity in diaphragm. Besides, malnutrition may disrupt the effect of exercise training, and anabolic hormone may be insufficient in some patients. In a recent clinical research, the prognostic impact of respiratory muscle wasting was not consistent with the results from studies in 1990s, suggesting heterogeneity in the significance of respiratory muscle wasting in HF patients, which may not have been observed in animals. In limb muscle on the other hand, deconditioning may prevalently exist under wasting and attenuate the heterogeneity in the prognostic significance of wasting. Taken together, much more evidence will be needed until we can estimate if respiratory muscle wasting would be an important therapeutic target in HF patients.
