Abstract:With the incorporation of mono‐ and bi‐dentate chiral organic ligands, four pairs of 0D and 3D hybrid chiral copper(I) iodides are successfully synthesized with similar Cu4I4 cubane tetramer building units. These materials demonstrate excellent luminescent properties and circularly polarized luminescence emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yield and long‐term stability. Chiral hybrid Cu(I)‐based iodides with d10 closed shell demonstrate great potential for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) because of high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, by incorporating mono‐ or bi‐dentate coordination mode ligands as chiral source, the self‐assembly of four pairs of chiral hybrid Cu(I)‐based iodides, namely, (R/S)‐Cu4I4(Hmpy)4·H2O (R/S‐1), (R/S)‐Cu4I4(3Hpy)4 (R/S‐2), (R/S)‐Cu4I4(2MePI)4 (R/S‐3), and (R/S)‐Cu4I4(3AD)4 (R/S‐4) (where R/S‐Hmpy = R/S‐2‐pyrrolidinemethanol, R/S‐3Hpy = R/S‐3‐hydroxypyrrolidine, R/S‐2MePI = R/S‐2‐methylpiperazine, and R/S‐3AD = R/S‐3‐aminopiperidine), are reported. With the monodentate and bidentate ligands, these materials belong to two different structural types: 0D molecular clusters (R/S‐1, R/S‐2) and 3D porous metal–organic frameworks (R/S‐3, R/S‐4). These materials all crystallize in non‐centrosymmetric space groups containing similar basic Cu4I4 cubane tetramer building units but with different coordination modes. They are also semiconductors, with optical bandgaps ranging from 2.70 to 2.94 eV. The photoluminescence (PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emissions are further characterized, where the highest PLQY of ≈95% and CPL dissymmetry factor (glum) of ≈7 × 10−3 are achieved in R/S‐1. This work offers a systematic comparison between different structural types with similar building blocks, bridging by the flexible chiral ligands, and shows that the hybrid copper iodides are highly promising candidates for next‐generation optoelectronics and chiroptics.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials are promising in applications such as 3D displays and quantum communication. Hybrid organic-inorganic copper(I) iodides have been rapidly developed due to their intense photoluminescence and structural diversity; nevertheless, the reported Cu-I clusters rarely show CPL activities. In this study, we introduced chiral organic molecules R/S-methylbenzylammonium (R/S-MBA) into Cu-I inorganic skeletons to achieve chiral tetranuclear (R/S-MBA)4Cu(4)I(4) clusters with intense orange luminescence and CPL activity at room temperature. These enantiomeric (R/SMBA)(4)Cu4I4 clusters show oppositely signed circular dichroism (CD) signals, which agree well with their simulated electronic CD spectra. The crystallization-induced helical arrangement of (R/S-MBA)(4)Cu4I4 clusters and their largely distorted polynuclear configuration demonstrate a new platform for the study of chiral-related properties.
Complexation-induced Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarised Luminescence of an Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogen

Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.

Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:Chiral chromophores and their ordered assemblies are intriguing for yielding circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and exploring intrinsic structure–light emission relationships. With the extensively studied chiral organic molecules and inorganic nanoparticle assemblies for the amplified CPL, the assemblies of copper halide hybrid clusters have attracted intensive attention due to their potential efficient CPL. Here, we report robust chiral phosphine–copper iodide hybrid clusters and their layered assemblies in crystalline states for amplified CPL. We reveal that the intermolecular interactions endow the clusters with the capability of assembling into chiral crystalline CPL materials, including hexagonal platelet-shaped microcrystals (glum ≈ 9.5 × 10–3) and highly oriented crystalline films (glum ≈ 5 × 10–3). Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)‐sensitive enantiomorphic hybrids (R)‐ and (S)‐C6H15Cl2NO⋅SbCl5 are successfully prepared with brilliant orange emission peaked at 604 nm with photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 71.2%, caused by self‐trapped exciton emission of Sb3+. CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor glum of 2.5 × 10−4 and −1.6 × 10−4 is achieved for R‐type and S‐type, respectively. Chiral materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are currently attracting great attention for their wide applications in bioresponsive imaging, 3D displays, and storage of information. Herein, CPL‐active enantiomorphic hybrids (R)‐ and (S)‐C6H15Cl2NO⋅SbCl5 are obtained by self‐assembling chiral R/S‐(3‐chloro‐2‐hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride with antimony(III) chloride, giving a 0D structure with SbCl5 pyramids isolated by (3‐chloro‐2‐hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride cations. The formed enantiomers exhibit brilliant orange emission peaked at 604 nm with photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 71.2%, originating from the self‐trapped exciton emission demonstrated by photophysical characterization. Due to the existence of chiral organic cations, the enantiomers exhibit strong chiral‐optical properties with mirror‐image circular dichroism signals in ground state and obvious CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor glum of 2.5 × 10−4 and −1.6 × 10−4 for R‐type and S‐type, respectively. It should be mentioned that these are the first reported 0D hybrids with CPL‐activity. This work paves an avenue for developing eco‐friendly CPL materials with highly ‐efficient luminescence.

Abstract:AbstractZero‐dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides with perfect host‐guest structures are promising candidates to construct circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)‐active materials. However, it still remains challenging to obtain 0D chiral metal halides with simultaneously strong CPL and high photoluminescence quantum yield. Here, a new enantiomeric pair of 0D hybrid lead‐tin bromides, (RR/SS‐C6N2H16)2Pb0.968Sn0.032Br6 ⋅ 2H2O (R/S‐PbSnBr ⋅ H2O), is reported. TheR/S‐PbSnBr ⋅ H2O compounds not only show intriguing self‐trapped exciton emissions with near‐unity quantum yield, but also present intense CPL with a dissymmetry factorglumof ±3.0×10−3. Such CPL activities originate from the asymmetric [SnBr6]4−luminophores inR/S‐PbSnBr ⋅ H2O, due to the induced structural chirality by the organic ligands via N−H⋅⋅⋅Br hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, CPL emissions with tunable colors fromR/S‐PbSnBr ⋅ H2O and dehydrated compounds are reversibly observed, which extends their chiroptical applications.
Circularly polarised photoluminescence and electroluminescence of chiral copper(I) dimers based on R/S-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthalene ligands

Abstract:Due to the ability to emit circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) for application in many areas, chiral luminescent materials developed very fast these years. Herein, three chiral copper(I) chloro-bridged dimers R/S-(BINAP)2Cu(μ-X2) (X = Cl, Br and I) based on R/S-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthalene (R/S-BINAP) ligands were synthesized conveniently at room temperature with high yields above 95%. Though emissions of the compounds in solution are weak, the dimers in powder and doped film displayed strong luminescence. Furthermore, the small singlet-triplet energy level gap and calculated theoretical frontier molecular orbital distribution overlap suggested these dimers have thermally activated delayed fluorescence characteristics. In addition, R/S-(BINAP)2Cu(μ-X2) doped films showed mirror symmetric circular dichroism and CPL spectra with high dissymmetry factor (g) above 1 × 10-2. While the corresponding circularly polarised organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) fabricated by evaporation method based on R/S-(BINAP)2Cu(μ-I2) exhibited high maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.7%. Notably, the CP-OLEDs also displayed mirror imaged circularly polarised electroluminescence spectra with gEL factors around 3.0 × 10-3.

Abstract:Abstract Copper(I) complexes with chiral diimine and diphosphine ligands were prepared and their chiroptical properties were investigated. By adding chirality to the diimine ligand, CPL (circularly polarized luminescence) intensities emitted from the copper(I) complex were enhanced to a maximum absolute gem value of 3 × 10−3, which is considered large for a mononuclear copper(I) complex.

Abstract:Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) offer a new platform for multifunctional photoelectric applications. Herein, we report two pairs of chiral organic-inorganic hybrid manganese(II) halide clusters (R/S-3-aminopyrrolidine dihydrochloride)6(Mn3Cl12)(Cl)6 (R/S-1) and (R/S-1,2-diaminopropane dihydrochloride)3(Mn3Cl12) (R/S-2). Both of them have high PLQY (more than 42%) under ambient conditions, especially the PLQY of R/S-2 reached 85%. More importantly, the glum value of R/S-1 (|glum| = 0.0071) is 3.5 times that of R/S-2 (|glum| = 0.002), showing excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Through the structural analysis of single crystals, we reveal that the directional arrangement of chiral ligands in manganese cluster molecules has the ability to amplify the CPL properties. Further, based on the excellent luminescence properties of R/S-2, we show examples of their applications as scintillators in X-ray detection and imaging. To our knowledge, this is the first report of chiral manganese(II) halide scintillators. This research provides rational guiding principle for the design and preparation of multifunctional chiral organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides.

Abstract:As one fundamental property of light, polarization has a huge impact in quantum optics and optoelectronics through light-matter interactions. However, the bright and near-unity polarized light emissions in the visible range by solid crystalline materials are scantly realized. Here, we report well-defined quasi two-dimensional (2D) hybrid crystals based on the linear alignment of Cu2I2-dimer/bidentate ligand hybrid clusters for achieving bright and near-unity linearly polarized light emissions. Using first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that the superaligned transition dipole moments are the key for the observed excellent polarized light emissions. To further enhance the photoluminescence (PL) polarization degree, we fabricate Cu2I2-dimer-based hybrid nanobelts, which display high PL quantum yield (up to 64%) and ultrahigh PL polarization degree (∼0.99). Our reported copper iodine cluster-based luminescent hybrid materials for bright and highly polarized light emissions will have great potential for future quantum optics applications.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence Induced by Hydrogen‐Bonding Networks in a One‐Dimensional Hybrid Manganese(II) Chloride

Abstract:Chiral hybrid metal halides hold great potential as the circularly polarized luminescence light sources. Herein, we have obtained two enantiomeric pairs of one-dimensional hybrid chiral-manganese(II) chloride single crystals, R/S-(3-methyl piperidine)MnCl3 (R/S-1) and R/S-(3-hydroxy piperidine)MnCl3 (R/S-2), crystallizing in non-centrosymmetric space group P212121. In comparison to R/S-1, R/S-2 single crystals not only show red emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and high resistance to thermal quenching but also exhibit circularly polarized luminescence with an asymmetry factor (glum) of 2.5×10−3, which are attributed to the enhanced crystal rigidity resulting from the hydrogen bonding networks between R/S-(3-hydroxy piperidine) cations and [MnCl6]4- chains. The circularly polarized luminescence activities originate from the asymmetric [MnCl6]4- luminophores induced by the N-H···Cl hydrogen bonding with R/S-(3-hydroxy piperidine). Moreover, these samples demonstrate great application potential in circularly polarized light-emitting diodes and X-ray scintillators. This work shows a highly efficient photoluminescent Mn-based halide and offers a strategy for designing multifunctional chiral metal halides.

Abstract:Hybrid multifunctional materials have great potential in a wide variety of applications due to their flexible combination of organic and inorganic components. Introducing chiral organic modules into the metal halide frameworks can effectively generate multifunctional materials, achieving new functionalities with noncentrosymmetric structures. Here, by incorporating (R)- or (S)-piperidine-3-carboxylic acid (R/S-PCA) as the templating cation, we report the synthesis and characterization of three pairs of new 2D chiral hybrid Cu(I) halides, namely, (R/S-PCA)CuBr2, (R/S-PCA)CuBr2·0.5H2O, and (R/S-PCA)CuI2. These chiral Cu(I) halides crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group C2 and belong to a new structural type similar to layered silicates. The optical absorption edges of these chiral materials can be tuned by changing the halide or upon the absorption of water and range from 2.70 to 3.66 eV. A dynamic conversion between (R/S-PCA)CuBr2 and (R/S-PCA)CuBr2·0.5H2O occurs through exposure to moisture or vacuum drying along with changes in the reversible bandgap and photoluminescence. Chiroptical properties such as circular dichroism, circular polarized light emission, and second harmonic generation are investigated. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) show the indirect and direct bandgap natures of these Cu(I) halides and reveal the mechanism for the broadband self-trapped exciton emission at the excited state. The fascinating structural type, chiroptical properties, and reversible hydrochromic behavior of these Cu(I)-based halides make them viable candidates for next-generation multifunctional optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Chiral hybrid metal halides with a high dissymmetry factor (glum ) and a superior photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are promising candidates for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) light sources. Here, we report eight new chiral hybrid manganese halides, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric space group P21 21 21 and showing intense CPL emissions. The glum of polycrystalline samples for coordinated structures (23×10-3 ) is more than doubled compared with the non-coordinated ones (8.5×10-3 ), due to the structural variations. R-1 exhibit both a high glum and a high PLQY (50.2 %). The effective chirality transfer mechanism through coordination bonds, with strongly emissive MnII centers, enables a new class of high-performance CPL materials.
Achieving Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence through Cascade Cationic Insertion in Lead‐free Hybrid Metal Halides

Abstract:Generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with simultaneous high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and dissymmetry factor (glum) is difficult due to usually unmatched electric transition dipole moment (μ) and magnetic transition dipole moment (m) of materials. Herein we tackle this issue by playing a "cascade cationic insertion" trick to achieve strong CPL (with PLQY of ~ 100%) in lead-free metal halides with high glum values reaching -2.3×10-2 without using any chiral inducers. Achiral solvents of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) infiltrate the crystal lattice via asymmetric hydrogen bonding, distorting the perovskite structure to induce the "intrinsic" chirality. Surprisingly, additional insertion of Cs+ cation to substitute partial (CH3)2NH2+ transforms the chiral space group to achiral but the crystal maintains chiroptical activity. Further doping of Sb3+ stimulates strong photoluminescence as a result of self-trapped excitons (STEs) formation without disturbing the crystal framework. The chiral perovskites of indium-antimony chlorides embedded on LEDs chips demonstrate promising potential as CPL emitters. Our work presents rare cases of chiroptical activity of highly luminescent perovskites from only achiral building blocks via spontaneous resolution as a result of symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Chiral transfer and circularly polarized luminescence activity are successfully achieved by assembling ACQ molecules with chiral Ag clusters in chiral silver cluster‐based assembled materials. The chiral reticular self‐assembly exhibits markedly enhanced luminescence efficiency and glum values compared to those of the ion‐pair‐direct assembly through a well‐defined spatial arrangement and highly efficient synergy. Chiral metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are usually endowed by chiral linkers and/or guests. The strategy using chiral secondary building units in MOFs for solving the trade‐off of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)‐active materials, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and high dissymmetry factors (|glum|) has not been demonstrated. This work directionally assembles predesigned chiral silver clusters with ACQ linkers through reticular chemistry. The nanoscale chirality of the cluster transmits through MOF's framework, where the linkers are arranged in a quasi‐parallel manner and are efficiently isolated and rigidified. Consequently, this backbone of chiral cluster‐based MOFs demonstrates superb CPL, high PLQYs of 50.3%, and |glum| of 1.2 × 10−2. Crystallographic analyses and DFT calculations show the quasi‐parallel arrangement manners of emitting linkers leading to a large angle between the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments, boosting CPL response. As compared, an ion‐pair‐direct assembly without interactions between linkers induces one‐ninth |glum| and one‐sixth PLQY values, further highlighting the merits of directional arrangement in reticular nets. In addition, a prototype CPL switching fabricated by a chiral framework is controlled through alternating ultraviolet and visible light. This work is expected to inspire the development of reticular chemistry for high‐performance chiroptical materials.

Abstract:In this paper, a neutral copper iodide hybrid with unique Cu3I3 trimeric inorganic functional unit is successfully fabricated using 5,6,7,8‐tetrahydroquinoxaline (L) with large steric‐hindrance group as the organic ligand. The hybrid owns a one‐dimensional (1D) extended polymeric structure in the form of Cu3I3(L)2. As a CuI‐based hybrid, 1D‐Cu3I3(L)2 has an infrequent far‐red/near‐infrared emission, exhibiting the potential application prospects in the field of display and night vision. Moreover, the luminescence mechanism is carefully studied by decay lifetime measurement and calculation of density of states, which is verified to be the combination of metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer and halide‐to‐ligand charge transfer.

Abstract:Single crystals of a zero-dimensional (0 D) copper (I) complex 0 D-CuBr(3-picoline)(3) (1) has prepared at room temperature. Each molecule of 1 contains one copper ion, which coordinates to three organic ligands and one Br anion.
