Abstract:We examine the complex dependence structure and risk spillovers between the Chinese stock market and twelve major international markets. To this end, we employ three types of vine copulas and tests for the Granger causality in risk of Hong et al. (2009). The results indicate that the R-vine copula is the optimal model to characterize the high-dimensional dependence structure of the markets after China joined the WTO, which suggests obvious structural differences with varying degrees of mainly positive dependences. Moreover, we identify unilateral extreme risk spillovers from China to the United States, France, and Germany, and either from Japan to China. We also detect bilateral spillovers between China and the United States, Japan, as well as Australia.

Abstract:After a major debt crisis occurs in a listed company, the stock prices of related enterprises may also fluctuate sharply, resulting in the spread of debt risk to more enterprises. Taking the stocks of listed companies as network nodes, we constructed a complex stock market network over three periods of time through the logarithmic return rate of stocks for the three periods of prophase, metaphase, and anaphase of the debt crisis. We studied the topological characteristics of the network and destructiveness over the three periods. Finally, the minimum spanning tree was used to construct a network and the community structure of the network. The empirical analysis took the debt crisis of the China Evergrande Company as an example to analyze the impact of its major debt crisis on the Chinese stock market. The research findings were as follows: First, the debt crisis increased the inter-industry connections within the network, that is, the correlations between enterprises in different industries was enhanced. Second, the closeness of the cross-industry connections increased the connectivity efficiency of the network, but compared with the other two periods, the debt crisis in the metaphase was less stable. Third, community research showed that in the metaphase of the debt crisis, the enterprises became the core nodes of the network.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the impact of supply chain risks on the cost of debt. Our analysis is based on a comprehensive dataset of corporate bond offerings of listed firms. We utilize input − output tables to construct the proxies for supply chain risks that capture trade credit financing risks. The results demonstrate that supply chain risks substantially raise the corporate cost of debt and that the effects are magnified during COVID-19. The effects are more pronounced for firms in industries that were hit by COVID-19 more severely, those with high supply chain concentration, state-owned enterprises, and firms in financial distress. Our results are robust to alternative measures of the cost of debt, supply chain risk, and alternative samples. Our study suggests that supply chain security and stability are crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of businesses and maintaining a stable economy.

Abstract:The shock of the global financial crisis sparked widespread concern across the world about systemic financial risk and led to the reexamination of regulatory mechanisms. The traditional principle of "too big to fail" underwent a transformation into the new idea of "too interconnected to fail." We used Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) technology and network topology analysis to examine the dynamic evolution of global systemic financial risk and the risk trends in global financial markets from the perspective of network connectivity. Our findings show that financial markets in the Chinese Mainland are net receivers of risk spillovers and that systemic financial risk has a clear cross-market contagion effect due to a global volatility spillover scale of 64 percent. To maintain the stability and security of China's financial markets, consideration should be given to the regulatory precept of "too interconnected to fail" in establishing macro-prudential risk prevention mechanisms.

Abstract:This paper investigates the extreme risk spillovers among U.S. traditional financial and FinTech institutions by applying complex network analysis methods. Dynamic extreme risk spillover networks are constructed by the approach of GARCH-Copula-CoVaR among 91 public companies for the period from January 2011 to August 2020. Empirical analyses on the topological structure of extreme risk spillover networks show that: (i) there is a sharp increase of global efficiency prior to and during the financial crisis, and a rapid decrease afterward. (ii) compared with other sectors, the insurance sector has higher scores of sector risk spillover indices in crisis periods, whereas the FinTech sector has higher scores of sector risk spillover indices in common periods, implying that these two sectors are important recipients of extreme risk spillovers. (iii) the rankings of centrality measures reveal that large diversified financials are influential senders of extreme risk spillovers, and banking institutions play crucial roles in transmitting extreme risks.

Abstract:While global supply chains provide firms with a buffer against local shocks, they expose firms to multi‐regional risks. The COVID‐19 pandemic and its differential impact on different regions in the world offer an opportunity to explore these effects. We investigate the multi‐regional supply chain risk by focusing on credit risk measured by abnormal CDS spreads and US‐China supply chain networks. Our evidence shows that local risks propagate through global supply chains to other regions. Using a matched sample, we find that abnormal CDS spreads for firms with Chinese supply chain partners increase by 12‐13 percent relative to the average raw CDS spreads due to supply chain disruptions during the economic shutdown in China, and the abnormal CDS spreads decrease by 9‐13 percent relative to the average raw CDS spreads when the supply chain activities resume in China. We also find that having a more global customer base can mitigate the effects of local household demand shocks. Lastly, we discover that firm size, supply chain network centrality, cash holdings, inventory, strong credit ratings, capital redeployability, and the number of segments increase resilience to global supply chain shocks, while financial leverage, operational leverage, and market competition weaken supply chain resilience. Abstract:With the gradual rise of the supply chain financial model and the expansion of scale, credit risk and contagion effects are gradually strengthened as business and financial links between upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain. The traditional credit risk contagion assessment model based on the financial status of an enterprise and the pledging of fixed assets has been unable to meet the basic needs of modern supply chain companies and financial institutions for risk control. Therefore, this paper introduces the Cox-Copula model to comprehensively assess a company's financial situation and the business health of upstream and downstream companies in the supply chain from the perspective of actual transactions between companies and fixed asset pledges. The study found that credit risk has a contagion effect in supply chain enterprises, and this contagion effect of credit risk has certain dynamic characteristics. At the same time, it was found that the impacts of macroeconomic factors and microfinance factors on credit risk contagion of supply chain finance have differences in the two dimensions of degree and direction of action.

Abstract:Since 2018, the bond market has surpassed the stock market, becoming the biggest investment area in China’s security market, and the systemic risks of China’s bond market are of non-negligible importance. Based on daily interest rate data of representative bond categories, this study conducted a dynamic analysis based on generalized vector autoregressive volatility spillover variance decomposition, constructed a complex network, and adopted the minimum spanning tree method to clarify and analyze the risk propagation path between different bond types. It is found that the importance of each bond type is positively correlated with liquidity, transaction volume, and credit rating, and the inter-bank market is the most important market in the entire bond market, while interest rate bonds, bank bonds and urban investment bonds are important varieties with great systemic importance. In addition, the long-term trend of the dynamic spillover index of China’s bond market falls in line with the pace of the interest rate adjustments. To hold the bottom line of preventing financial systemic risks of China’s bond market, standard management, strict supervision, and timely regulation of the bond markets are required, and the structural entropy, as a useful indicator, also should be used in the risk management and monitoring.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate China's changing financial interconnectedness via the presence of Granger-causality between firm level factors (Leverage, Market To Book Value and Returns) and systemic risk measures (ΔCoVaR, MES, and SRISK ). The analysis is based on 161 Chinese financial intermediaries (14 Traditional Banks, 16 Finance Services, 131 Real Estate Finance Developers) continuously listed over the period 2007:1–2021:1. We find that, in addition to traditional banks, finance companies and real estate financial developers pose systemic threats to the Chinese financial system, in particular during the Global Financial Crisis and the 2015 Chinese stock crash. Finally, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has put under strain the Chinese financial system, in particular the finance services.

Abstract:The realization of the "double carbon" target will have a great impact on the contagion effect of supply chain finance risk in the energy market. The article uses social network model and GARCH model to study the contagion effect of energy supply chain finance risk from both enterprise creditworthiness and economic environment. The social network model is used to analyze the degree of differentiation of the supply chain network and the correlation between node enterprises before and after the implementation of the "double carbon" target, using the asset-liability ratio of enterprises as the default risk indicator. The GARCH model was used to empirically analyze the risk contagion effect between CSI energy and Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indices from the perspective of economic environment. The study found that there is a significant correlation and contagion effect between the financial risks of silicon energy enterprises, and the enterprises with higher creditworthiness are less affected by the implementation of the "double carbon" target plan, and the supply chain network is more obviously centralized by the "double carbon" target. The results of GARCH model show that the energy market is influenced by the external economic environment and there is risk contagion effect between markets. Based on the results of the GARCH model, we provide policy recommendations for supply chain risk prevention and control.

Abstract:The global financial market shocks have intensified due to the COVID-19 epidemic and other impacts, and the impacts of economic policy uncertainty on the financial system cannot be ignored. In this paper, we construct asymmetric risk spillover networks of Chinese financial markets based on five sectors: bank, securities, insurance, diversified finance, and real estate. We investigate the complexity of the risk spillover effect of Chinese financial markets and the impact of economic policy uncertainty on the level of network contagion of financial risk. The study yields three findings. First, the cross-sectoral risk spillover effects of Chinese financial markets are asymmetric in intensity. The bank sector is systemically important in the risk spillover network. Second, the level of risk stress in the real estate sector has increased in recent years, and it plays an important role in the path of financial risk contagion. Third, Economic policy uncertainty has a significant positive impact on the level of network contagion of financial risk of Chinese financial markets.

Abstract:A supply chain's risk spillover effect will affect the customer's risk on the financing constraints of suppliers. This paper builds on the evaluation of customer risk by fuzzy mathematics, combines with the A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2007 to 2019 as a study sample, and empirically inspects the influence of customer risk on the level of corporate financing constraints. According to the study, it shows that the customer risk is currently at a moderate level, which will notably impair the supplier's external financing ability. This phenomenon is more remarkable when the monetary policy is tightened with fierce competition in the industry. This paper unveils the economic consequences of customer risk spillovers from a supply chain, enriches the study of the generation mechanism of corporate financing constraints, and provides investors and regulators with empirical evidence to appreciate corporate financing constraints.

Abstract:The integration of digital technologies is exhibiting an upward trend in Chinese enterprises, and the degree of corporate credit risk is directly proportional to their financial sustainability. Based on panel data of new energy enterprises from 2012 to 2020, this article makes an empirical study on the direct effect, mediating effect, and moderating effect of the digital economy (DE) on the new energy enterprises' credit risk. It is found that the digital economy could significantly mitigate the credit risk of new energy enterprises by improving total factor productivity and amplifying the potential default cost. When the digital economy affects corporate credit risk, the development of the new energy industry acts as an intermediary, and knowledge spillover acts as a moderator. Furthermore, considering knowledge spillover as the threshold variable, the digital economy has a double-threshold effect. The marginal impact fluctuates from dropping to increasing as the knowledge spillover level increases. As for the region's heterogeneity, the digital economy has benefited eastern China more than central and western China, possibly due to the differences in economic structure, capital intensity, and policy institutions. In view of these findings, this study provides a reference for China to mitigate corporate credit risk in the digital economy era.

The financialization of local government debt in China and its risk transmission to commercial banks

Abstract:China's local government debt has risen sharply due to fiscal stimulus and decentralized financing. This debt expansion increases systemic risk as default risk is transmitted to banks, the primary holders of local debt. Using a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model incorporating local governments and banks, we show that local debt expansion increases banks' nonperforming loans and crowds out private credit, increasing bank risk-taking. We empirically examine 2010–2019 data on 350 Chinese banks and find that the level of local debt positively impacts bank risk-taking, especially low-capital, nonstate, and unlisted banks. The mechanisms operate through an increase in nonperforming loans due to default risk and a reduced regional repayment capacity due to crowded-out private credit. Our study reveals the impact of local debt on bank risk and financial stability in China. Policy implications include strengthening bank regulation and pursuing diversified government financing.

Abstract:Purpose - Given that China Evergrande Group has recently been caught in a liquidity risk, the purpose of this study is to identify and assess its liquidity using traditional financial indexes. We analyze the reasons for the liquidity risk exposures, so as to provide practical implications for real estate companies. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study combines the principal-agent and the trade-off theories in order to analyze China Evergrande Group’s exposure to liquidity risk under the leverage effect. In addition, China Evergrande Group’s financial position is analyzed in depth, and its liquidity risk is defined and identified. Findings - The results show that under the high leverage effect, the company suffers from a high liquidity risk, and eventually falls into a financial crisis due to the shortage of cash for short-term debt accumulated in previous periods, and the long delay in returns on property sales. Research Implications - This study provides a new perspective for debt research by examining the leverage and liquidity risk of real estate-related enterprises. During the golden era of the real estate industry, real estate enterprises should uphold the principle of moderation in debt management, make reasonable use of financial leverage, clarify the strategic goal of diversification, and avoid credit risk.

Abstract:<p>This paper studies how the COVID-19 shock affects the CDS spread changes and abnormal stock returns of U.S. firms with different levels of debt rollover risk. We use the COVID-19 crisis as a quasi-natural experiment of adverse cash flow shock that increases the default risk of firms facing an immediate liquidity shortfall. We find that the COVID-19 shock significantly increased the CDS spread and decreased the shareholder value for firms facing higher debt rollover risk. The effect is stronger for non-financial firms, for firms that are financially constrained, and for firms that are highly volatile. Moreover, we find that firms with immediate refinancing needs suffered more than firms with distant refinancing needs during the COVID-19 shock, which further confirms that firms' debt rollover risk is indeed a key factor that drives the heterogenous reactions to the shock. The paper provides fresh insights into the role of firms' debt rollover risk during the COVID-19 health crisis.</p>

Abstract:As climate change impacts energy consumption, investments in clean energy are now associated with increased levels of risk and uncertainty. Consequently, the management of risk for clean energy investors has garnered significant academic attention. This study was designed to explore the risk transfers among clean energy markets, how they respond to market volatility, and how exceptional events impact the risk spillover. This was performed by examining the risk spillover of and asymmetric connectedness between clean energy markets, green bonds, and other financial markets in China, in line with the connectedness framework and minimum spanning tree technique. The findings revealed that clean energy markets exhibit heterogeneity in terms of the direction and magnitude of net risk spillover, the types of hedging assets involved, and their response to market volatility. Exceptional events, such as the Russian–Ukrainian conflict and COVID-19 pandemic, have an impact on the spillover relationships. During stable market conditions, green bonds experience fewer spillovers from clean energy markets, whereas, in times of volatility, gold markets are subjected to fewer spillovers. In the time domain, the overall long-term spillover is stronger compared to the short and medium terms. In the frequency domain, there is a significant risk of low-frequency transmission. These findings hold practical implications for energy investors in portfolio construction and for policymakers in pursuing sustainability objectives.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the multiple transmission mechanisms of the real estate industry’s risk spillovers to the financial industry. A GARCH-time-varying-copula-CoVaR model is used to measure the spillover effects and dynamic evolution trends of risk in the Chinese real estate industry. The results show that (1) in recent years, the risk spillovers from the real estate industry to the whole financial industry in China has been relatively high, and the possibility of systemic risks has increased. (2) The channel of the risk spillovers of the real estate industry into the financial industry has shifted from being concentrated within a traditional single banking industry to the accumulation and superposition of risk across the banking, securities, trust industries. (3) Current regulations have not fundamentally mitigated the risk spillovers. As such, this paper proposes three suggestions on financial policies and regulations: firstly, the government should reasonably regulate cooperation between the real estate industry and the financial industry, curb excessive speculation and abnormal fluctuations in real estate prices. Secondly, the government should maintain the continuity of regulatory policies, formulate differentiated policies according to the essential attributes of given industries, and eliminate risk contagion among the real estate industry and financial industries. Thirdly, the government should improve the macro prudential management framework.

Effect of COVID-19 on risk spillover between fintech and traditional financial industries

Abstract:COVID-19 has affected China's financial markets; accordingly, we investigate the effect of COVID-19 on the risk spillover between fintech and traditional financial industries. Using data from April 25, 2012 to April 22, 2022, which we divide into two parts (before and during the COVID-19 periods), we model the dynamic risk spillover relationship following the DCC-GARCH-BEKK and MMV-MFDFA methods. The results show that: (1) The dynamic relationship between fintech and traditional finance is almost positive most of the time, and the dynamic correlations between fintech and realty (real estate development and operation) are the largest. The dynamic linkage between fintech and traditional finance declines after the COVID-19 outbreak. (2) There exists a risk spillover from fintech to every type of bank before and during the COVID-19 periods. Notably, the risk spillover effect of fintech to large state-owned banks and city commercial banks is the largest separately before and during the COVID-19 periods. Meanwhile, there exist a two-way risk spillover between fintech and almost all other traditional financial industries before and during the COVID-19 periods. (3) Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk spillover relationship, which is in pairs and in the system become more complex. (4) Regarding the whole system, the correlation in the system is anti-persistent most of the time. Moreover, there are large fluctuations and more complex characteristics during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the whole system was smooth most of the time before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cross-border spillovers in G20 sovereign CDS markets: cluster analysis based on K-means machine learning algorithm and TVP–VAR models

Abstract:This paper investigates cross-border spillovers between G20 sovereign credit default swap (CDS) markets over the period 2009–2023. First, using the unsupervised K -means machine learning algorithm, we cluster G20 countries into four groups based on similarities in the characteristics of sovereign CDS time series. We then structure our analysis around these identified clusters. Next, we use the TVP–VAR–DY and TVP–VAR–BK models to examine spillover indices from both a static and dynamic perspective. In addition, we use spatial and network visualization tools to elucidate the spillover effects across time and frequency domains. Finally, we examine the correlation of spillover structures between high and low frequency domains. Our main findings suggest that: (1) from a dynamic perspective, sovereign risk spillovers exhibit significant volatility during global extreme events, with continuous effects over time; (2) from a static perspective, developing countries are primarily net exporters of sovereign risk, while most developed countries act as net importers. Moreover, there is evidence of spatial clustering and country development clustering effects in net sovereign risk spillovers; (3) sovereign risk has significant spillover effects, with low-frequency risk spillovers driven by high-frequency spillovers. The results contribute to the current understanding of global financial interconnectedness and risk transmission mechanisms.
