Abstract:Earth observation data provides an exceptional opportunity to study the temporal dynamics of large rivers. The availability of spatially continuous, synoptic and temporally repetitive satellite data allows the reconstruction of historical dynamics of large rivers along with the identification of the causal factors. An absolute paucity of information on the effect of hydrogeomorphic processes on the dynamics of the Upper Ganga River (UGR), especially upon its entry in the plains, motivated this research. This study aims to analyse morphological changes in the river channel, map temporal changes in the land use/land cover (LULC) within the riverscape and thereby understand the landscape dynamics in the UGR (Haridwar to Narora) during 1993-2017 by means of earth observation data. The analysis showed that the river remains straight with a sinuosity index of < 1; however, the braiding increased considerably (from 3.79 to 4.53). Erosion being more prominent on the left bank in comparison to the right bank with 85.89 km2 eroded on the left bank in comparison to 59.21 km2 eroded along the right bank. Riverine landscape has been observed to have a higher rate of accretion in comparison to erosion (8.09 km2 yr-1 and 6.04 km2 yr-1, respectively). Morphological change has brought a transition in the land use patterns with marked variation in vegetation and agriculture along with built-up. Significant changes in the composition of the LULC are largely due to the manifold increase in the agriculture extent (≈ 12 times), built-up (5 times) and the decrease in vegetation cover from 43.9% in 1993 to just 10.94% in 2017.

Abstract:The Ganga–Brahmaputra river basin is the second-largest hydrological region in the world. This is an integrated, trans-boundary drainage system with a common terminus of two major river systems, i.e., the Ganga and the Brahmaputra. Both the rivers are undergoing a process of shifting in their courses over time, thereby making certain stretches in their respective flow paths hazardous in nature. This study analyzes the factors that influence these shifting patterns at the two most hazardous sites located along both these rivers. The study focuses on the morphological changes in these hazardous zones (Malda along the Ganga in West Bengal and Morigaon along Brahmaputra in Assam) by calculating the bank-line migration, erosion-accretion, lateral shift, land loss, and related issues. Topographical map and multispectral Landsat imageries were used for certain time periods (1955 to 2020) to analyze the chronological changes in the river morphology. Remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) were used to evaluate and analyze the scenario in the study area.

Abstract:Channel migration, erosion and accretion are significant geomorphological processes in floodplain regions, impacting both natural and man-made structures. The Sankosh River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River, is a good example of a complex and dynamic river system. Erosion and accretion have caused significant problems along the Sankosh River. Local peoples have lost much fertile agricultural land and homesteads in the last few decades, but no related work has been found in this area that highlights this issue addressing erosion and accretion and bankline shifting. The integration of remote sensing and GIS technologies offers a holistic approach to studying river dynamics in this region. Utilizing Landsat TM, ETM+ and OLI satellite data spanning from 1987 to 2021, an investigation was conducted to analyze spatiotemporal variations along the Sankosh River. The modified normalized difference water index, derived from satellite data, is used to assess changes in surface water area. Thirty randomly distributed transects (T1–T30) from three reaches of the Sankosh River served as the basis for the analysis, focusing on river channel morphology, lateral migration, bank erosion and accretion. The findings indicate that from 1987 to 2021, the river eroded approximately 46.50 km 2 of land at an annual rate of 1.37 km 2 /year. In contrast, accretion occurred at a rate of 1.42 km 2 /year, accumulating a total of 48.27 km 2 of land over the same period. The braided nature of the Sankosh River, characterized by a network of numerous branches within its channel, revealed notable shifts in the river's centerline. In reaches A and C, the centerline shifted eastward, while reach B experienced a westward shift during the study period. Let it be known that the research is mainly focused on the assessment of bank erosion, accretion and lateral migration; it surely gives some valuable information to understand the dynamic behavior of the Sankosh River, enabling us to recognize the imperative for sustainable riverbank management strategies. These strategies aim to strike a balance between preserving river ecosystem integrity and addressing community needs and safety concerns.

River dynamics - a geospatial analysis of Jamuna (Brahmaputra) River in Bangladesh during 1973-2019 using Landsat satellite remote sensing data and GIS

Abstract:The present study is designed to illuminate the dynamics of the Jamuna River in Bangladesh for 46 years, from 1973 to 2019. About 240 km of the Jamuna River course was assessed using remote sensing and GIS. Landsat remote sensing imageries were processed, and bank lines were extracted and analysed using GIS. The main objective of the study was to understand the pattern of bed movement of the Jamuna River. The river dynamics were assessed based on bank erosion, accretion, bank line shifts, channel width, and river course and confluence shift. Area vulnerable to erosion was assessed using historical erosion rate and trend analysis. The result revealed that the river area increased by about 48% over 46 years. The total eroded area was about 1038 km2, with 35.40% more erosion on the left bank than on the right. Due to higher erosion than deposition, the river widened. The average width of the river increased by about 56.40% during the period. The average rate of shifting was higher on the left bank than on the right, indicating the eastward movement of the river. Impact analysis showed that overall, a total of 822 km2 and 390 km2 of croplands and settlements were eroded during the period 1973-2019. The width of the confluence at the Padma River junction decreased by about 28%. The straight shift of the confluence was 9.27 km towards the southeast. The vulnerable area assessment anticipated that there would be more erosion on the left bank than on the right, and that Kurigram, Tangail and Jamalpur are the districts most susceptible to future left bank erosion. And, the lower reach of the right bank of the Padma River is at high vulnerable to erosion at the confluence. The methods and analysis adopted in this study can be applied to any other braided river to monitor the dynamics of the river and to formulate an action plan to protect the river from erosion.

Abstract:Changing the river course in the alluvial plain region is a common phenomenon that may have disastrous consequences. The risk of river bank erosion has increased dramatically during the last few decades. As a result, assessing the river bankline alteration is necessary. The study aims to determine the changes in the bankline in the lower Ganga River. This research presents a novel approach by using the digital shoreline analysis system (DSAS) in conjunction with geospatial data to monitor and predict long-term changes in river banks from 1965 to 2017, providing a comprehensive temporal analysis that is unprecedented in this study area. The study analyzes the bankline change along the river Ganga using DSAS using during the elapsed period. An erosion and accretion zonation was conducted based on the rate of bankline change of the river Ganga in the study area. The rate of bankline shifting was quantified using the endpoint rate (EPR) and linear regression rate (LRR) statistics computed using the DSAS model. The east bank of the Ganga in the study area experienced an average erosion of − 41.17 m/year according to the LRR model. Whereas, the west bank eroded an average of − 2.32 m/year between 1965 and 2017. 90.54% of the transect lines recorded erosion at the east bank and 53.69% of the transect lines at the west bank recorded erosion computed with LRR. For the assessment of the impact of river bankline change on the LULC of the study area, the future river banklines for 2027 and 2037 were forecasted. The result shows that by 2027 and 2037 about 133.24 and 147 km 2 of agricultural land and 7.19 and 11.47 km 2 of the built-up area may be affected by river bank erosion respectively. By extending the applications of DSAS and geospatial analytics to encompass predictive and impact assessment capabilities, this study significantly enriches the literature on the management of riverbank erosion and associated land use risks. This research provides important insights that improve river management and planning and enable the formulation of robust strategies to mitigate erosion risks on river banks.

Abstract:The evolution of delta and riverbank erosion within the river basin can significantly impact the environment, ecosystems, and lives of those residing along rivers. The Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), counted among the world's largest deltas, has undergone significant morphological alterations via natural processes and human activities. This research aims to examine these morphological alterations and their impacts on local economic and social conditions in the VMD. This study utilized satellite data from 1988 to 2020, coupled with population density and land use/land cover (LULC) maps from 2002, 2008, and 2015. The findings reveal that the VMD experienced widespread erosion over the past three decades, covering an area of 66.8 km2 and affecting 48% of the riverbank length (682 km). In contrast to riverbanks, islets showed an accretion trend with an additional area of 13.3 km2, resulting in a decrease in river width over the years. Riverbank and islet erosion has had a profound impact on the LULC, population, and economy of the provinces along the VMD. From 2002 to 2020, eight different land use types were affected, with agricultural land being the most severely eroded, constituting over 86% of the total lost land area (3235.47 ha). The consequences of land loss due to erosion affected 31,273 people and resulted in substantial economic damages estimated at VND 19,409.90 billion (USD 799.50 million) across nine provinces along the VMD. Notably, even though built-up land represented a relatively small portion of the affected area (6.58%), it accounted for the majority of the economic damage at 70.6% (USD 564.45 million). This study underscores the crucial role of satellite imagery and GIS in monitoring long-term morphological changes and assessing their primary impacts. Such analysis is essential for formulating effective plans and strategies for the sustainable management of river environments.

Abstract:Rivers are among the most dynamic components in Earth's terrestrial water cycle and provide critical ecosystem services. Yet, the spatiotemporal variability of river surface extents remains largely unquantified at the global scale. Satellite remote sensing provides a promising alternative to in-situ observations, which can enable a more comprehensive survey and systematic analysis of global rivers at fine spatial resolutions. The study examines the spatiotemporal variability of river surface extent globally and its natural driving factors, by combining the use of Landsat-based Global Surface Water (GSW) and Global River Widths from Landsat (GRWL) databases. In addition to examining the long-term mean river surface extent in various climate zones, we perform statistical analyses to correlate monthly times series of fractional river extent with the terrestrial water storage (TWS) components obtained from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite observation and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) model simulations. Results show that the spatiotemporal variability of water presence in rivers can be explained well via differentiating climate zones. The analysis also shows that 52.7% of the global maximum river extent is covered by water less than half of time. Changes of fractional river extent are found to be highly correlated with groundwater storage in low- and mid-latitudes, whereas snow melting dominates the river dynamics in high latitudes. By examining the extremes of fractional river extent, we found that the abrupt changes of fractional river extent are well linked to precipitation anomalies in the equatorial, arid, and warm temperate areas. This study offers an innovative perspective to study spatiotemporal dynamics of rivers by combining optical remote sensing (Landsat), gravimetry observations (GRACE), and land surface simulations; and it highlights the significant role of low-flow-generating processes (snow melting, infiltration, and recharge-discharge) in controlling river dynamics in certain regions, which warrants future investigation.

Abstract:River geomorphological investigation issues have received little attention in most countries of the world. Such processes become a pressing necessity due to climate change and anticipated events of extraordinary surges and dry seasons, which may debilitate the security of adjacent and downstream cities, particularly in locales that are exceedingly delicate and influenced by climatic changes. Al-Abbasia reach is a river that runs through the middle of the Euphrates River and is known for its numerous bends and meanders. The study of hydraulic structures such as barrages can provide important information about their influences on morphological processes in river reaches near the barrage upstream and downstream. Hydraulic analysis is made of the river behavior in u/s and d/s of hydraulic structures like barrages as a result of sediment deposition and erosion in u/s and d/s. A study, i.e., research on the impacts of the Abbassia barrage on the river system, has been conducted to address this issue using multi-temporal Landsat satellite data from 1976 to 2022 provided by the USGS. The study reach is located 5 kilometres upstream and 5 kilometres downstream of the Abbassia reach. Following the construction of the barrage, which had an impact on the sedimentation and geometry of the river, morphological variations took place in this part of the Al Abbassia reach. In this study, morphological changes throughout 49 years between 1976 and 2022 were investigated utilising remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) approaches. Additionally, four image groups from three separate decades were used to perform change detection (1990–2000, 2000–2010, and 2010–2022). In this study, a monitoring system using Landsat-3 MSS: 1985, Landsat-5 TM: 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and Landsat-8 OLI: 2010, 2011, 2015, 2021, 2022 were employed to map river planform changes. The long-term comparison of this series of satellite images and historical maps for the period 1976–2022 indicates a continuation of change in the reach study with a rate of approximately 56, 33, 97, and 55% for upstream and 19%, 26%, 3%, and 45% for downstream for the width, area, deposition, and erosion, respectively. Furthermore, it is observed that there is a shift in river course within 200 m downstream of the barrage for the period of 1985–1990. The findings of this study, which monitor river morphological change at finer temporal and spatial resolutions, are crucial for promoting sustainable river management. They also aid in the investigation of river behaviour, which is necessary for providing the best management possible and overcoming the difficulties posed by this important research issue. Abstract:The Muriganga River, also known as channel creek, underwent morphological changes often since it is an alluvial as well as a tidal river. The present study analyses the morphological changes in the Muriganga River and its islands with the help of the Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) and digital shoreline analysis tool (DSAS 5.0). Moreover, the computation of morphological changes was also performed on two islands, i.e. Sagar and Ghoramara, which are situated just outside the river reach. Eight cloud-free satellite images of Landsat MSS (1972–1980), Landsat TM (1988–2011) and Landsat OLI (2017–2021) have been used to investigate the river shoreline shifting and island dynamics of the Muriganga River resulted from the erosion–accretion process during the last 49 years. For the short-term study, the erosion–accretion rates are derived from one Landsat image to the next, whereas for long-term analysis, the erosion–accretion rates are estimated based on the difference between 1972 as the reference image and the succeeding images. Short-term and long-term analysis shows that the average rate of erosion is more than that of accretion in Muriganga River. It is also found that the areas of Sagar, Ghoramara, Mousuni and Pushpa islands are shrinking continuously, whereas the Niogi and Basit islands are expanding enormously. These may indicate that the shoreline erosion results in widening the river and the eroded materials are accumulated in Niogi and Basit islands. The results suggest that there is an urge for a better coastal management strategy for the erosion control scheme. This study also helps in gaining knowledge of maintaining the navigability in the Muriganga River.

Stream structure and function changes in urbanized plain river network area: Case study of Yangtze River delta, China

Abstract:Urbanization within a watershed increases the area of impervious surfaces, which decreases infiltration of precipitation and increases runoff Together with the land-use change and hydraulic engineering around rivers induced by urbanization, the natural structure of the stream network is acutely changed. With a case study of the Yangtze River delta of China - HJH watershed, which has undergone rapid urban development over the past decade, firstly, we assess the land-use changes in three periods, which vary from 1991,2001 to 2006. Based on the result of remote sensing images supervised classifying, the impervious surface increases continuously, to 1280 km(2) (approx. 376%) in these 15 years; while the water/lake area decreases by 328 km(2) (approx. 52%). Then with the MNDWI methods to extract the vector river network, we analyse the number and length changes of different levels and the stream network structure changes. The number and length of lower class rivers declined in 1991-2006, while decline in higher class rivers was not seen. There is a decreasing trend in the branch ratio and length ratio of the stream network, and the branch ratio and length ratio are in the range of Horton's law in statistics. But with the smaller length ratio, the fractal dimension value is beyond the threshold. Finally, with the Mann-Kendall trend test, based on the meteorological and hydrological observation data, we analysed the precipitation and water level change in 1960-2007. During these 48 years, there was a weak increasing trend of precipitation, which does not reach a significant level. There is also an increasing trend of observed water level, which reaches a significant level from 1993 to 2007. It is mainly because of the impervious surface and stream network changes. We believe that the water/lake area rate and the number and length of the low level rivers are the key to maintain a stream network structure and flood control.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities have drastically transformed natural landscapes, profoundly impacting land use and land cover (LULC) and, consequently, the provision and functionality of ecosystem service values (ESVs). Evaluating the changes in LULC and their influence on ESVs is imperative to protect ecologically fragile ecosystems from degradation. This study focuses on a highly sensitive Upper Ganga riverine wetland in India, covering Hapur, Amroha, Bulandshahr, and Sambhal districts, which is well-known for its significant endemic flora and fauna. The study analyzes the subtle variability in ecosystem services offered by the various LULC biomes, including riverine wetland, built-up, cropland, forest, sandbar, and unused land. LULC classification is carried out using Landsat satellite imagery 5 and 8 for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020, using the random forest method. The spatiotemporal changing pattern of ESVs is assessed utilizing the value transfer method with two distinct value coefficients: global value coefficients (C14) for a worldwide perspective and modified local value coefficients X08 for a more specific local context. The results show a significant increase in built-up and unused land, with a corresponding decrease in wetlands and forests from 2000 to 2020. The combined ESVs for all the districts are worth US 2139 million (X08) in the year 2000, which declined to US 1770 million (X08) in the year 2020. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the coefficient of sensitivity (CS) is below one for all biomes, suggesting the robustness of the employed value coefficients in estimating ESVs. Moreover, the analysis identifies cropland, followed by forests and wetlands, as the LULC biomes most responsive to changes. This research provides crucial insights to stakeholders and policymakers for developing sustainable land management practices aimed at enhancing the ecological worth of the Upper Ganga Riverine Wetland.

Abstract:Morphological investigation of rivers is difficult but is one of the vital topics for the management of highly meandering river systems. The study employs GIS to analyse 32 years of Barak River data, addressing challenges in quantifying the morphology of meandering rivers. Earth observatory data from 1990 to 2022 track channel bank shifts and Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) alterations. Although the digital shoreline analysis system (DSAS) model identified long-term bank line migration analysis of shorelines, it's use is very new for rivers, especially in terms of the meandering of rivers. Conversely, research on long-term meandering river morphology in the Barak River channel has not been conducted despite evident land-use changes. Using DSAS for bank positions and CA–Markov models for LULC , future projections until 2043 reveal ongoing Barak River bank shifts and significant LULC pattern alterations. The findings of the research were validated through RMSE, Student's t-test, chi-square, and the kappa coefficient. Forecasts indicate that rapid urbanization impacts river morphology. The methodology is crucial for managing highly meandering rivers, particularly in contexts involving vulnerable river systems.

Geomorphic diversity as a river management tool and its application to the Ganga River, India

Abstract:Understanding of geomorphic processes and the determination of geomorphic diversity in catchments are prerequisites for the sustainable rehabilitation of river systems and for reach‐scale assessment of river health. The Ganga River system in India is a large, complex system consisting of several long tributaries, some >1,000 km, originating from 2 distinct hinterlands—the Himalaya to the north and the cratons to the south. Traversing through a diverse climatic regime across the Plain and through precipitation zones ranging from 600 mm/year near Delhi to 1,200 mm/year in the eastern plains, the Ganga River system has formed very diverse landform assemblages in 3 major geomorphic domains. We have recognized 10 different river classes for the trunk river from Gangotri (source) to Farakka (upstream of its confluence with the Brahmaputra) based on (a) landscape setting, (b) channel and active floodplain properties, and (c) channel planform parameters. The mountainous stretch is characterized by steep valleys and bedrock channels and is dominated by large‐scale sediment production and transport through hill slope processes. The alluvial part of the river is characterized by 8 different river classes of varying reach lengths (60–300 km) many of which show sharp transitions in landscape setting. We have highlighted the application of this approach for the assessment of habitat suitability, environmental flows, and flood risk all of which have been significantly modified during the last few decades due to large‐scale anthropogenic disturbances. We suggest that the diversity embedded in this geomorphic framework can be useful for developing a sustainable river management programme to “work with” the contemporary character and behaviour of rivers.

Abstract:With the increasing availability of big geospatial data (e.g., multi-spectral satellite imagery) and access to platforms that support multi-temporal analyses (e.g., cloud-based computing, Geographical Information Systems, GIS), the use of remotely sensed information for monitoring riverine hydro-morpho-biodynamics is growing. Opportunities to map, quantify and detect changes in the wider riverscape (i.e., water, sediment and vegetation) at an unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution can support flood risk and river management applications. Focusing on a reach of the Po River (Italy), satellite imagery from Landsat 5, 7, and 8 for the period 1988–2018 were analyzed in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to investigate changes in river planform morphology and vegetation dynamics associated with transient hydrology. An improved understanding of these correlations can help in managing sediment transport and riparian vegetation to reduce flood risk, where biogeomorphic processes are commonly overlooked in flood risk mapping. In the study, two established indices were analyzed: the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) for monitoring changes in the wetted river planform morphology, inferring information about sediment dynamics, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for evaluating changes in vegetation coverage. Results suggest that planform changes are highly localized with most parts of the reach remaining stable. Using the wetted channel occurrence as a measure of planform stability, almost two-thirds of the wetted channel extent (total area = 86.4 km 2 ) had an occurrence frequency >90% (indicating stability). A loss of planform complexity coincided with the position of former secondary channels, or zones where the active river channel had narrowed. Time series analysis of vegetation dynamics showed that NDVI maxima were recorded in May/June and coincided with the first peak in the hydrological regime (occurring in late spring and associated with snowmelt). Seasonal variation in vegetation coverage is potentially important for local hydrodynamics, influencing flood risk. We suggest that remotely sensed information can provide river scientists with new insights to support the management of highly anthropized watercourses.

Abstract:Rapidly changing river systems can impact people, property and infrastructures. This study investigates bank erosion and accretion of the Padma River in Bangladesh, through space and time, using historical topographic maps, Corona and Landsat images and navigational charts. A geographic information system (GIS) was utilised to quantify the erosion and accretion pattern. In addition, volumetric changes in the riverbed were also investigated. Results indicated that the area of erosion and deposition vary both spatially and temporally. However, erosion was more prominent on the left bank, whilst accretion was high along the right bank, over the study period. Overall, average annual erosion rates were higher than accretion rates (17 km2 year−1 versus 13 km2 year−1). The volumes of morphological change for two epochs correspond to a net volume gain of 338.75 million m3 sediment between 1984 and 1992 but a net loss of 295.20 million m3 during the period 1992–2008. Regression analysis between bank erosion and mean annual flow, peak discharge and mean flood flow showed that two of the three independent variables were significantly associated with bank erosion. The area of large mid-channel bars increased over time, which may have had a role in shaping erosion and accretion processes of the river. As increased runoff is expected in the future, as a result of enhanced rainfall under warmer climate, knowledge of this work will help to determine the morphological response of fluvial systems in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

Abstract:Rivers are among the most diverse, dynamic, and productive ecosystems on Earth. River flow regimes are constantly changing, but characterizing and understanding such changes have been challenging from a long-term and global perspective. By analyzing water extent variations observed from four-decade Landsat imagery, we here provide a global attribution of the recent changes in river regime to morphological dynamics (e.g., channel shifting and anabranching), expansion induced by new dams, and hydrological signals of widening and narrowing. Morphological dynamics prevailed in ~20% of the global river area. Booming reservoir constructions, mostly skewed in Asia and South America, contributed to ~32% of the river widening. The remaining hydrological signals were characterized by contrasting hotspots, including prominent river widening in alpine and pan-Arctic regions and narrowing in the arid/semi-arid continental interiors, driven by varying trends in climate forcing, cryospheric response to warming, and human water management. Our findings suggest that the recent river extent dynamics diverge based on hydroclimate and socio-economic conditions, and besides reflecting ongoing morphodynamical processes, river extent changes show close connections with external forcings, including climate change and anthropogenic interference.

Abstract:Vegetation is an important component of riparian ecosystems, providing fundamental habitats for numerous species. Over the past few decades, as more and more large river systems have been heavily dammed, the vegetation communities in downstream floodplains have potentially been affected, but the vegetation response to this type of human-mediated disturbance is not well known. In this study, the long-term vegetation dynamics in a large river, the Middle Yangtze River, were investigated using Landsat time-series data, and the focus was placed on the relict mid-channel bars downstream of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). To reveal the vegetation dynamics, a phenological metric, maturity average vegetation index (MAVI), was defined based on the vegetation index during the maturity phase. Simultaneously, an unsupervised change detection method was developed to identify flood inundation areas by differencing water index value from pre- and post-flood Landsat images. The main findings are as follows: (i) post-TGD flood events exerted a more detrimental impact on the floodplain vegetation compared to pre-TGD events. For some bars, the flood impact on vegetation converted from positive to negative in response to a ∼90% decline in sediment concentration post-TGD, while for some other bars the negative impact was further exacerbated; (ii) The MAVI-cumulative curves for zones under different elevations approached each other in response to a 12-year absence of episodic overbank flooding after the TGD, and for stable bars the curves converged in a time scale of ∼10 years, exhibiting diminished vegetation heterogeneity thereafter; (iii) Of the methods for deriving vegetation dynamics and inundation pattern, the vegetation index, OSAVI, was suitable for characterising the phenology of perennial reed species, and the unsupervised change detection method can generate an accurate flood inundation map for mid-channel bars with limited ground truth data. Overall, the vegetation responses to the TGD operation can help understanding the dam impact on vegetation and facilitate the floodplain restoration projects in the heavily dammed fluvial system.

Abstract:<p>Given rapid environmental change, the development of new, data-driven, interdisciplinary approaches is essential for improving assessment and management of river systems, especially with respect to flooding. In the world's extensive drylands, difficulties in obtaining field observations of major hydrological events mean that remote sensing techniques are commonly used to map river floods and assess flood impacts. Such techniques, however, are dependent on available cloud-free imagery during or immediately after peak discharge, and single images may omit important flood-related hydrogeomorphological events. Here, we combine multiple Landsat images from Google Earth Engine (GEE) with precipitation datasets and high-resolution (<0.65 m) satellite imagery to visualise flooding and assess the associated channel-floodplain dynamics along a 25 km reach of the unvegetated, ephemeral Río Colorado, Bolivia. After cloud and shadow removal, Landsat surface reflectance data were used to calculate the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and map flood extents and patterns. From 2004 through 2016, annual flooding area along the narrow (<30 m), shallow (<1.7 m), fine-grained (dominantly silt/clay) channels was positively correlated (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.83) with 2-day maximum precipitation totals. Rapid meander bend migration, bank erosion, and frequent overbank flooding was associated with formation of crevasse channels, splays, and headward-eroding channels, and with avulsion (shifting of flow from one channel to another). These processes demonstrate ongoing, widespread channel-floodplain dynamics despite low stream powers and cohesive sediments. Application of our study approaches to other dryland rivers will help generate comparative data on the controls, rates, patterns and timescales of channel-floodplain dynamics under scenarios of climate change and direct human impacts, with potential implications for improved river management.</p>

Integrated Approach to Mekong River Flow Modeling: Data Gaps and Climate Trends

Abstract:The transboundary Mekong River, spanning approximately 4800 km with numerous tributaries and floodplains, serves as a vital resource for power generation, fisheries, and agriculture. Despite its significance, the river's productivity faces disruption due to inadequate cooperation among riparian countries regarding data sharing, the uneven distribution of gauging stations, and data gaps for many parts of the river length. This disparity poses challenges in accurately modeling the river's natural runoff, flow characteristics, and the flooded area, navigating through mountainous and relatively flat terrains. To address this, we have developed an integrated modeling framework comprising a physically-based hydrological model and a hydrodynamic model. For 2500 km of the Mekong River’s mainstream, a highly accurate hydrodynamic model was developed. The produced velocity, water level, and discharge data were compared with gauging stations with continuous data records, showing high accuracy with NSE exceeding 0.93. Additionally, a point-by-point comparison of the yielded water level and discharge data by the hydrodynamic model was conducted with the low-resolution recorded data for stations lacking continuous time series data. Results indicated a high accuracy with an average NSE greater than 0.91, demonstrating the model's precision in capturing the dynamic behavior of the Mekong River. The hydrodynamic model's results were then used to fill data gaps in stations with significant data deficiencies, allowing the production of reliable data and sufficient gauging network distribution for the entire basin. These datasets, combined with recorded gauging data, served as the calibration stations for the developed physically-based hydrological model. This calibration aimed to assess the impacts of climate change on natural runoff, encompassing not only the mainstream but also tributaries and lake floodplains of the Mekong River. Findings revealed a discernible declining trend in natural runoff within the Mekong River over the specified four-decade period. This enhanced modeling capability is particularly crucial for accurately simulating dynamic river flows with insufficient continuous data. Our comprehensive approach contributes to a more precise understanding of the Mekong River's complex hydrological dynamics, supporting informed decision-making for sustainable resource management.
Considering the Dynamics of Water Surface Boundaries to Measure the Evolution of Hydrological Connectivity in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:Dynamics of the terrestrial water surface impact hydrological connectivity. Compared with traditionally deployed water surface parameters, changes in the water-boundary more effectively account for the dynamics of water surface and depth resulting from hydrological variations. However, previous studies of hydrological connectivity generally applied only connectivity length or width parameters using the center line of the water body and therefore fail to fully capture the impact of water boundary dynamics. In this study, optimized water body extraction indices based on data obtained from remote sensing imagery are used to develop a novel metric that indicates water surface boundary dynamics and reveal surface hydrological connectivity changes in the Yangtze River Delta from 1990 to 2020. Detailed inter-annual and seasonal changes in the evolution of water body boundaries from a water surface perspective indicate an overall decline in hydrological connectivity against the background of climate change, increased urbanization, and dam construction. The declining trend in connectivity occurs in three phases, viz. from 1990 to 2003, a gradual decline is exhibited but with a very marked degree of inter-seasonal variability; between 2003 and 2012, connectivity remains relatively constant but with a reduced amplitude between seasons; further reductions in the magnitude of seasonal variations characterize the third phase, to 2020. Meanwhile, the stability of hydrological connectivity, indicated by the coefficient of variation, also exhibits marked spatial heterogeneity. Parts of the delta with more tributaries, including the Huaihe and southeastern basins, have lower stability (7.33 and 6.59, respectively) than the Yangtze basin (6.22). This study presents a novel metric to achieve greater precision in the monitoring of hydrological connectivity. Such information can be harnessed to improve regional ecological and water resource management.
