Abstract:Ecosystem services (ES) can mitigate ecological risks (ER), yet these services can also be affected by ER. Based on land use data, socioeconomic data, landscape index, and spatial analysis techniques such as spatial autocorrelation, we study the spatial and temporal characteristics of ES and ER in the Yangtze River Delta from 2000 to 2019. The conclusions are as follows: (1) During the study period, construction land has been growing rapidly, and the depth, complexity, and intensity of land use have been increasing. The reserve land resources in the Yangtze River Delta are scarce. (2) From 2000 to 2019, the ecosystem service value (ESV) has been declining, with a total loss of 107.562 billion RMB. The area of low ESV continues to grow rapidly, while the area of high ESV continues to shrink. High ecological risk potential exists in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. (3) Although the ecological environment in economically developed areas is more fragile, the ecological risk potential can be reduced in two ways: strengthening urban clusters, thus improving cooperation and communication among them; and protecting ecosystems with high ES such as water area and forestland. When formulating regional development plans, in addition to socioeconomic benefits, managers and policy makers need to focus on natural benefits as well.

Abstract:Wetland vegetation has experienced significant loss and degradation over the last few decades. Although volumes of studies involve wetlands, limited attention has been paid to the long-term changes and ecological values of inland lake wetlands in China. In this paper, land use/cover data of Dongting Lake wetland from 1995 to 2020 was generated based on Google Earth engine using Stacking algorithm. Subsequently, the spatial and temporal variation of wetland types was explored using dynamic analysis and correlation indices of land change. The main factors influencing the distribution of wetland vegetation were identified by Geodetector. Finally, the degree of impact of wetland changes on ecosystem service value was quantified based on the equivalence factor method. The results show that, in the past 25 years, wetland land use types had switched with each other more frequently, and a total of 294.94 km2 of wetland area had been lost, mainly due to the shrinkage of water, reeds and sedge. The main factors affecting wetland distribution are population density, GDP, elevation and sunshine duration, and the interaction of the drivers is mostly linearly enhanced with no weakening effect. In addition, the ecosystem service value of wetlands showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing, with a total loss of ¥87,000.99 million in wetland ESV. The results of the study can provide basic information and data for the preliminary work of planning and design, and demonstrate the importance of ecosystems in different regions. Based on the assessment results, it can provide an important basis for the construction of ecological security patterns and policy formulation for ecological civilization construction.

Abstract:Based on the land use data of 2000, 2010, and 2018, ArcGIS, Fragstas, and GeoDa software were used to assess the spatial and temporal evolution of ecosystem service value (ESV) and landscape ecological risk (LER) in the Jinsha River Basin from 2000 to 2018. Their relationship was subsequently examined using bivariate spatial autocorrelation and spatial regression models. The results indicate three important aspects of this system. (1) Between 2000 and 2018, the woodland, grassland, water area, and construction land rose, while the cultivated land and unused land declined, among which the decrease in unused land and the increase in construction land were more prominent. (2) From 2000 to 2018, the value of ecosystem services in the study area increased by 73.09 billion yuan, from 2018.89 billion yuan to 2091.98 billion yuan, while the overall landscape ecological risk index decreased from 0.01029 to 0.01021. The areas occupied by both low-risk and high-risk areas increased, indicating that the ecological environment in the region as a whole has been improving. However, there are still localized areas with deteriorating ecological conditions. (3) There is a positive spatial correlation between landscape ecological risk and ecosystem service values in the study area, demonstrating a high-risk-high-value clustering characteristic, and the landscape ecological risk has a positive effect on the value of all ecosystem services, particularly the value of the regulation services. The findings of this study can be used as a guide for reducing regional ecological risks, enhancing ecosystem services, and enhancing the quality of the ecological environment in the basin.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities can greatly affect the ecological environment. As an ecological protection area, it is necessary to scientifically evaluate the landscape ecological risk (LER) in the Dongjiangyuan region to provide scientific guidance for regional sustainable development. In this study, the LER was calculated, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the LER from 1985 to 2020 were analysed using geospatial techniques. The results show that the proportion of low-risk and extremely low-risk areas increased from 87.65% to 94.26% during the 1985-2020 period. The extremely high-risk and high-risk areas had a decreasing trend, and the extremely high-risk areas were concentrated in areas with impervious surfaces and croplands. The rate of risk was negative, especially in south-eastern Xunwu County, southern Dingnan County and central Anyuan County, indicating that the ecological risk has been greatly improved. The LER centre gradually migrated to the geometric centre of the study area. However, the gravity centre of extremely high risk and high risk remained in Xunwu County. The spatial agglomeration of LER changed significantly, and the overall difference between cold areas and hot areas decreased. The hot spot areas in the Dongjiangyuan region are key areas for ecological governance in the future.

Combined Impact Of Socioeconomic Forces And Policy Implications: Spatial-Temporal Dynamics Of The Ecosystem Services Value In Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:Water can carry or overturn a boat. Natural resources form the foundation of human survival and development. However, land use change caused by human urban civilization has damaged the natural environment and in turn threatened the continuation of human civilization. Accordingly, it is crucial to analyze the impacts of human activities on land use change and consequent dynamics of ecosystem service value (ESV). For the sustainable development of human beings, an investigation should be conducted to explore what type of land use behavior will be considerably beneficial to improve our relationship with the natural environment. This study analyzes the spatial-temporal dynamics of ESV of 148 counties in the Yangtze River Delta in China over three five-year periods (2000-2015) and examines the influence of socioeconomic forces and policy implications. Exploratory spatial data analysis and spatial regression were applied to facilitate the analysis. Results show that the averages of the ESV change ratios of the 148 counties in each of the aforementioned periods are -0.667%, -2.690%, and -4.668%, respectively. The number of counties that showed an ESV loss trend in the three periods are 72 (48.6%), 125 (84.4%), and 139 (93.9%), respectively. In terms of spatial pattern, ESV change demonstrates the spatial distribution characteristic of high loss spreading from the northeast to the middle and west with a tendency to strengthen spatial agglomeration. Results of the spatial regression analysis determine the overwhelming importance of population growth and economic advancement. The results also indicate that the development mode characterized by industrial structure, capital input, and technology upgrades can exert considerable influence on socioeconomic development, thereby affecting the change of ESV. Moreover, the constraints of policy substantially affect the changes of ESV from 2010 to 2015. Policy makers should consider the relationship between land use patterns and the ESV variation in different development stages to formulate appropriate measures, thereby reducing or preventing the loss of ecological service value and promoting sustainable development.

Abstract:Urban expansion and inappropriate land uses have caused a decline in the regional ecosystem services capacity, which is contrary to United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 aiming to protect and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. Landscape ecological risk (LER) visually depicts the disturbances to ecosystem services and environmental shifts resulting from human activities. Consideration of ecosystem services in LER assessment has not been sufficiently researched. Here, we employed ecosystem service values (ESV) to define landscape vulnerability, and adopted an enhanced risk assessment framework, amalgamating landscape patterns and ecosystem processes, to evaluate the spatial-temporal shifts in ESV and LER in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2000 to 2020. We attempted to analyze the relationship between LER and anthropogenic disturbances. The results showed that over the past 20 years, the general trend revealed a diminishing high-risk area, while medium and low-risk regions expanded. Notably, the urban agglomeration of the YREB experienced a marked surge in risk. Regarding migration direction, the low-risk category has expanded in the east–west direction, while the medium and high-risk categories have shown inward contraction mainly in the north–south direction. The findings highlight the complex changes between ecological processes and LER under anthropogenic disturbances, and can serve as a guide for sustainable risk management and the development of ecological security patterns.

Abstract:The Dongting Lake region is an important ecological and environmental protection zone in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China. Long-term monitoring and evaluation of its ecological environment is of great significance. In this study, the spatio-temporal pattern of ecological condition change and its response to climate factors and human activities in the Dongting Lake region was quantitatively analyzed using RSEI (Remote Sensing Ecological Index) model. The primary conclusions are as follows: (1) The temporal pattern of ecological changes has a small fluctuation period (1990–2007) and a continuous improvement period (2007–2020) with an ecological improvement rate of 1.17% per year. (2) The spatial pattern of ecological changes is directly tied to the land use types in this area. 17.36% of the regions with an excellent ecological level are primarily woodland, whereas 4.45% of the areas with a low ecological level are mostly urban. (3) The deterioration in ecological conditions in urban areas is primarily attributable to human activities, whereas the decline in ecological conditions in surrounding mountainous regions and central agricultural regions is primarily attributable to climate factors. Our research provides valuable support for ecological environment monitoring and management strategy formulation in the Dongting Lake region.

Abstract:Catchments support the survival and development of humans in a region and investigating the mechanism of land-use changes and ecological responses in catchments is of great significance for improving watershed ecological service functions. Taking the Dongting Lake catchment as the study area, this study used spatial analysis, an ecosystem service value (ESV)-equivalent factor method, grid method, and other spatial analysis methods to explore land-use changes and the corresponding ecological service value response from 1990 to 2015, to provide an important theoretical reference for ecological service management, regional planning and ecological service function improvement in the Dongting Lake Basin. Our findings are as follows: (1) apart from a trend of notable expansion in construction land, the land-use types in the Dongting Lake catchment did not change significantly. (2) Grassland had the fastest transfer-out rate; forest land were cultivated land comparably transferred to each other with a larger area, where both were simultaneously and continuously transferred out as construction land; water areas, wetlands, and construction land were all transferred in, where construction land had the fastest transfer rate. (3) The total ESV of the watershed first increased and then decreased, but the overall change was small; spatially, the wetlands and water areas had a higher ESV, whereas construction land and cultivated land had lower ESVs. (4) Soil protection, gas exchange, climate regulation, biodiversity, and water conservation are always the main ecosystem service functions of a catchment, where the service function of the catchment ecosystem is greater than the productive function. The increase in construction land was the main factor for the increased differences between the spatial distributions of the soil, raw materials, biodiversity protection, and gas exchange.
Analyzing the Factors Driving the Changes of Ecosystem Service Value in the Liangzi Lake Basin—A GeoDetector-Based Application

Abstract:The Liangzi Lake Basin (LLB) is an important ecological buffer for Wuhan's urban agglomeration. It involves the ecological security of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Historical land misuse has altered the topography and impacted the ecosystem services value (ESV). Amid urbanization, it is vital to highlight changing land use methods and their effects on ESV valuation, understanding the underlying drivers comprehensively. The research is centered on the LLB as its designated study region, and utilizes remote sensing satellite data spanning from 2000 to 2020. This data is combined with a value equivalence table to quantify ESV. The GeoDetector method is employed to investigate the driving factors behind ESV fluctuations. The findings indicate a substantial shift in land use patterns within the LLB between 2000 and 2020. Notably, arable land decreased by 6.28% and water bodies decreased by 0.92%, while built-up areas expanded by 5.14% and forest land expanded by 2.05%. During this period, the LLB's ecosystem services value decreased by approximately 2.035 billion yuan. This drop was mainly due to reduced water areas resulting from urbanization, negatively impacting the ecological regulatory services provided by these water bodies. Based on the geoprobe model, possible drivers of changes in ESV in the LLB were identified, with human activity intensity and NDVI detection results being the most obvious. The research emphasized protecting and restoring key ecological areas, like water bodies and forests, to maintain a delicate balance between the environment and socio-economic development. Additionally, they exemplify the effectiveness of ecological policies, including initiatives such as "Returning Farmland to Forest or Pasture" (RFFP), and the prohibition of lake and field reclamation.

Abstract:Poyang Lake is a typical lake in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and is the largest freshwater lake in China. The habitat quality of Poyang Lake has been declining in recent years, leading to a series of ecological problems. An ecological risk evaluation, based on land use, is important in order to promote a coordinated development of land use and the ecological environment. In this paper, land use data from the Poyang Lake basin in the corresponding years are interpreted based on the images from the Landsat satellite mission in seven periods from 1980 to 2020. The lake surface and the 1 km lakeshore zone of Poyang Lake are extracted based on the interpreted land use data. Finally, the ecological service value per unit area of the area is measured by combining it with the Chinese terrestrial ecosystem service value equivalent table, and then with the value of each ecological factor and the value of the changes to land use type. The research results show that: (1) from 1980 to 2000, the lake area of Poyang Lake had an overall decreasing trend (the area slightly increased from 1980 to 1990); from 2000 to 2020, the lake area of Poyang Lake gradually increased (the area slightly decreased from 2015 to 2020). (2) The farmland, forest, grassland and desert areas gradually increased and the wetlands gradually decreased over 40 years; the area of the water body gradually increased from 1980 to 2010, and gradually decreased from 2010 to 2020. (3) The ecosystem service value of the lakeshore zone of Poyang Lake fluctuated around 15,000 × 106 Yuan from year to year.

Abstract:Abstract Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and is an important wetland in the world. The scientific assessment of ecosystem service trade-offs in Poyang Lake Basin is of great significance for maintaining regional ecological balance and global biodiversity. This study uses land use as the main data source and the “equivalent factor method” to estimate the ecosystem service value of the Poyang Lake Basin from 1990 to 2015; the study also analyzes the trade-off synergy among ecosystem services. On this basis, land use information was simulated under three scenarios: planning scenario (government policy-oriented), development scenario (economic benefit-oriented), and protection scenario (ecological protection-oriented). The trade-offs and synergies among ecosystem services under different scenarios were evaluated. The results demonstrate that the ecosystem service value for the entire basin steadily increased from 1990 to 2015. The relationships among ecosystem services in the basin were mainly synergistic, and there were few trade-offs. Among the three simulation scenarios, the ecosystem service value was the highest and the trade-offs among ecosystem services were the lowest under the protection scenario, the ecosystem service value was the lowest and the trade-offs among ecosystem services were the highest under the development scenario, and the trade-offs under the planning scenario were between the values of the protection scenario and the development scenario. From the perspective of maximizing the value of ecosystem services and minimizing trade-offs in ecosystem services, the protection scenario is the optimal scenario among the three scenarios.

Abstract:Due to the complex ecological effects of the interactions between natural environmental evolution and anthropogenic interference, a series of longstanding environmental problems have severely exacerbated the vulnerability of watershed ecosystems. Landscape ecological risk (LER) assessment is suitable for exploring the extent of threats and the likelihood of adverse impacts to watershed ecosystems from multiple sources of risk. However, the specific LER and the role of diverse factors on LER in the Four Lakes Basin remain unclear. Hence, it is necessary to identify the spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics of LER and the drivers of their interactions. In this study, the variations and driving factors of LER in the Four Lakes Basin from 2000 to 2020 were evaluated. Landscape disturbance index was selected to establish the LER measurement method. Spatial autocorrelation and the standard deviation ellipse method were employed to analyze the spatiotemporal changes in LER. To overcome the uncertainties in accurately assessing the interactions, we attempted to use the geographic detector model to quantitatively analyze the driving factors. The following results are indicated: (1) In the period from 2000 to 2020, the LER had spatially uneven distribution characteristics of low in the north-central and high in the east and south. The level of LER has been increasing. (2) The LER has characteristics showing significant spatial clustering distribution. However, the spatial convergence has diminished with time. (3) The development inclination of LER was different in the two stages. The first stage (2000–2010) showed diffusion, while the second stage (2010–2020) was concentrated to the northwest. (4) The two-factor enhancement of interactions between land use index and human disturbance (q2000 = 0.885, q2010 = 0.888, q2020 = 0.713) was the dominant factor influencing LER. This study can provide a theoretical reference for ecological restoration and promotion of ecosystem service functions in the Four Lakes Basin.

Abstract:The rapid development of society and economy in the post-industrial era has exacerbated the spatial matching contradiction between the demand of humans and the supply of the natural environment, while ecosystem service (ES) as a bridge linking nature and society, identifying and assessing its supply–demand risk, was beneficial to ecosystem management and promoted regional high-quality development. Based on the data of multi-source remote sensing and statistics, the supply and demand levels of four ESs, which contain food supply, carbon storage, soil conservation, and water yield in the main stem of the Weihe River in 2000, 2010, and 2020, were quantitatively measured. The spatial and temporal analysis of the supply, demand, and supply–demand ratio of each service was carried out using spatial mapping. The spatio-temporal pattern of the supply–demand risk was recognized by the method of spatial overlay, which means overlaying the supply and demand for material quality, ratio, trend, and the degree of trade-off coordination together between each service. The results showed that (1) the demand for water yield decreased slightly while the demand for food and the supply of carbon storage remained stable. In addition, the supply and demand of other services showed an upward trend. (2) The spatial distribution of the supply–demand ratio of each service shows “high in the south and low in the north” and “high in the east and low in the west,” among which the supply–demand ratio of carbon storage is decreasing. (3) The overall supply–demand risk of soil conservation in the study area is low with characteristics of small range and high degree, the risk distribution characteristics of the other services are high in the east and low in the west, and the risk is high in the city center and low around. Otherwise, the supply–demand risk of food supply showed a downward trend, the risk of carbon storage showed an upward trend, the risk of soil conservation remained stable, and the risk of water yield showed a significant downward trend. Based on static supply–demand risk identification, this study assesses supply–demand risk over two periods and analyzes the trend of supply–demand risk changes over time. It clarifies the extent and direction of supply–demand risk shifts, as well as provides improved theoretical support for ecosystem service management.

Abstract:Ecosystem services (ES) are directly affected by land use and land cover changes (LUCC); however, the impacts of extended period LUCC on ES are poorly explored. Here, we mapped the 1998–2019 annual land use and land cover in the Dongting Lake Region (China) and explored the spatiotemporal evolution of LUCC and landscape patterns (i.e., composition, shape, and aggregation) and their relationship with ES, including carbon storage, gross primary production (GPP), water conservation capacity, and crop yield in the region. The results showed a significant increase in forest areas and impervious surfaces and a decrease in croplands and bare lands with spatial heterogeneity. Carbon storage was strongly correlated with forest, cropland, waterbody, impervious surface, and bare land, and there was a nonlinear relationship between landscape patterns and ES. The trade-offs and synergies (correlations) among ES varied considerably, with crop yield being significantly synergistic with carbon stocks, GPP, or GPP with carbon stocks. This study revealed the nonlinear relationship between landscape patterns and ES, and the mechanism of landscape characteristics on ES. The findings can provide scientific support for regional land use planning, ES regulation, and landscape optimization in the lake region.

Linking Ecosystem Service Supply–Demand Risks and Regional Spatial Management in the Yihe River Basin, Central China

Abstract:The continuous supply of ecosystem services is the foundation of the sustainable development of human society. The identification of the supply–demand relationships and risks of ecosystem services is of considerable importance to the management of regional ecosystems and the effective allocation of resources. This paper took the Yihe River Basin as the research area and selected water yield, carbon sequestration, food production, and soil conservation to assess changes in the supply and demand of ecosystem services and their matching status from 2000 to 2018. Risk identification and management zoning were also conducted. Results show the following: (1) The spatial distribution of the four ecosystems service supply and demand in the Yihe River Basin was mismatched. The food production supply levels in the middle and lower reaches and the upstream water yield, carbon sequestration, and soil conservation supply levels were high. However, most of the areas with high demand for ecosystem services were concentrated downstream. (2) From 2000 to 2018, the supply of water yield and carbon sequestration in the Yihe River Basin decreased, while that of food production and soil conservation increased. The demand for the four ecosystem services also increased. (3) Water yield faced considerable supply–demand risks. Fifty percent of the sub-basins were at a high-risk level, and the risk areas were concentrated in the middle and lower reaches. The three remaining services were mainly at low-risk levels. The Yihe River Basin was divided into eight types of supply–demand risk spatial management zones based on the ecosystem service supply and demand levels, which will help promote refined regional ecosystem management and sustainable development. The supply and demand assessment of ecosystem services from a risk perspective can integrate the information of natural ecosystems and socio-economic systems and provide scientific support for watershed spatial management.

Abstract:Understanding the spatio-temporal characteristics of ecological degradation and its mechanism is the key to implementing national land space ecological restoration. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about identifying ecologically degraded areas from a structure–function angle. This paper used the Dongting Lake Basin (DLB) as the research area, with the landscape pattern index and InVest model utilized to analyze the landscape distribution characteristics and ecosystem service functions in 2000 and 2018. Based on this, a fuzzy inference approach and geographic detectors were used to explore the characteristics and driving mechanism of ecological degradation in the DLB from 2000 to 2018. The results found are the following: (1) The overall landscape of the DLB was fragmented, the landscape shape tended to be complex, the degree of aggregation declined, and the landscape types were more discrete than before. In terms of the landscape-level index, the overall indicators of the landscape pattern in the DLB showed little change from 2000 to 2018, and the overall landscape pattern change was reasonably stable. (2) The three ecological services exhibited prominent spatial distribution features during the study period. In particular, food supply services showed a steady upward trend, while habitat quality and carbon storage services generally declined. (3) The ecological degradation in the DLB demonstrated striking spatial and temporal differences during the study period, and the ecological situation improved. The ecological degradation areas were mainly distributed in urban areas with denser populations and a higher level of urbanization, while the ecological restoration areas were mainly in the mountainous and hilly areas far away from the urban centers. (4) Among the influential factors, the production potential of urban land and farmland is the main factor that affects the ecological environment degradation and spatial distribution difference in the DLB. The interactive detection results indicate that the driving mechanism exhibits a two-factor enhancement or nonlinear increase.

Abstract:Weihe River basin is of great significance to analyze the changes of land use pattern and landscape ecological risk and to improve the ecological basis of regional development. Based on land use data of the Weihe River basin in 2000, 2010, and 2020, with the support of Aeronautical Reconnaissance Coverage Geographic Information System (ArcGIS), GeoDa, and other technologies, this study analyzed the spatial-temporal characteristics and driving factors of land use pattern and landscape ecological risk. Results showed that land use structure of the Weihe River basin has changed significantly, with the decrease of cropland and the increase of forest land and construction land. In the past 20 a, cropland has decreased by 7347.70 km 2 , and cropland was mainly converted into forest land, grassland, and construction land. The fragmentation and dispersion of ecological landscape pattern in the Weihe River basin were improved, and land use pattern became more concentrated. Meanwhile, landscape ecological risk of the Weihe River basin has been improved. Severe landscape ecological risk area decreased by 19,177.87 km 2 , high landscape ecological risk area decreased by 3904.35 km 2 , and moderate and low landscape ecological risk areas continued to increase. It is worth noting that landscape ecological risks in the upper reaches of the Weihe River basin are still relatively serious, especially in the contiguous areas of high ecological risk, such as Tianshui, Pingliang, Dingxi areas and some areas of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Landscape ecological risk showed obvious spatial dependence, and high ecological risk area was concentrated. Among the driving factors, population density, precipitation, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and their interactions are the most important factors affecting the landscape ecological risk of the Weihe River basin. The findings significantly contribute to our understanding of the ecological dynamics in the Weihe River basin, providing crucial insights for sustainable management in the region.

Abstract:Landscape index had a relationship with the ecological risk of land-use, as one of the important indicators to measure the ecological risk of land-use. The traditional ecological risk assessment of land-use did not consider the influence of the particle scale on landscape indices of landscape. In order to improve the science of ecological risk assessment for land-use, and to provide a scientific basis for land-use management decisions, in this paper, the National Nature Reserve of Shengjin Lake in Anhui province was chosen, the remote sensing TM images from 1986, 2002, to 2011 were selected, and GIS technology and measures were used to analyze, besides, Fragstats software was selected to get a different scale of landscape indices. The assessment model for land-use ecological risk was established, and land-use ecological risk in 2015 and which was predicted through multiple linear regression and principal component analysis in 2020. The results showed that the evaluation for land-use ecological risk was influenced by landscape scale. The land-use ecological risk in the study area had increased-decreased-increased. It was predicted that the land-use ecological risk in the study area would reach 2.32 in 2015 and 2.72 in 2020. Ecological risk was gradually gathering at the National Nature Reserve of Shengjin Lake in Anhui province.

Abstract:The objective of this investigation was to determine the rate of renal excretion of end products of protein metabolism in urine of 20 endurance trained male volunteers aged 23-26 years with an average maximum oxygen uptake of 66 ml.kg-1.min-1 during 364 days of hypokinesia (decreased number of running steps/day). All volunteers were on an average of 10,000 running steps/day prior to their exposure to hypokinesia (HK). All volunteers were randomly assigned to one of the two groups. Ten volunteers were placed continuously under 13.9 km/day (10,000 running steps/day) (control subjects) and ten volunteers were subjected continuously under 2.7 km/day (3,000 walking steps/day) (hypokinetic subjects). During the prehypokinetic period of 60 days and during the hypokinetic period of 364 days urinary excretion of total nitrogen, urea and creatinine were determined. All hypokinetic volunteers displaced significant increases in renal excretion of total nitrogen, urea and creatinine as compared to the control group of volunteers. It is concluded that prolonged restriction of muscle activity induces significant increases in urinary excretion of end products of nitrogen metabolism in endurance trained volunteers.

Abstract:<p>Maintaining optimal ecological security in Dongting Lake Basin is of great significance to national projects of Yangtze River Economic Belt Construction and Yangtze River Protection. Ecological quality and the potential associated affecting factors are important contents of ecological security in Dongting Lake Basin. In this research, remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) were used to analyze the temporal and spatial variation in the ecological qualities in Dongting Lake Basin during 2001-2019 and determine the potential associated affecting factors. Results showed that the overall ecological quality fluctuated during 2001-2019. The change intensities among different RSEI levels were relative low (absolute change values of 1 and 2) and mainly changed among fair, moderate and good levels. Land use/cover, climate (average annual rainfall) and human interferences (GDP) were the associated potential factors affecting the ecological quality in Dongting Lake Basin. Among these factors, areas and qualities of woody savannas, savannas, mixed forests, and cropland/natural vegetation mosaics were the most important factors affecting the ecological quality (RSEI). While other land use/cover (i.e., Croplands, Evergreen Needleleaf Forests, Parmanent Wetlands, Grasslands), climate (average annual rainfall) and human interferences (GDP) also had contributions to the ecological quality. Specifically, such four land use/cover, average annual rainfall were positively but GDP negatively correlated with the ecological quality. In conclusion, changes in the area and quality of different land use types might explain most of the ecological quality variations in Dongting Lake Basin. These findings will provide significant information for managers to make more targeted ecological restoration efforts in Dongting Lake Basin.</p>
