Abstract:After menopause there is a greater tendency to visceral fat accumulation and increased arterial pressure, contributing to obesity and increased cardiovascular risk. On the other hand, exercise training promotes important benefits on cardiometabolic risk factors. In this sense, the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that the weekly frequency to practice regular physical activity should be, at least, 3 days a week. However, this recommendation applies to the general population, so the association of risk factors that is so frequently observed after menopause is not considered. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of different volumes of moderate aerobic exercise training on metabolic, hemodynamic and autonomic parameters in an experimental model of menopause fed with high‐fat diet. For this, 32 C57BL/6J ovariectomized mice fed a high‐fat diet were used, divided into 4 groups (n=8 each): sedentary (OSD); trained 3 days a week (OTD3); trained 5 days a week (OTD5); trained 7 days a week (OTD7). The administration of the high‐fat diet lasted 9 weeks, and the ovariectomy was performed at the end of the 4th week. Fasting glycemia and oral glucose tolerance were assessed before the ovariectomy and at the end of the study. Exercise training lasted 4 weeks (6th to 9th week of the protocol) at moderate intensity. At the end of the study, the animals were cannulated for direct arterial pressure recording, baroreflex sensitivity and cardiovascular autonomic modulation analysis. The results demonstrate that the greater volume of exercise training (OTD7) provided a marked reduction in body weight, adipose tissue (OSD: 0.060±0.007; OTD3: 0.051±0.005; OTD5: 0.052±0.009; OTD7: 0.029±0.003 grams) and blood glucose fasting time (OSD: 158±6; OTD3: 145±5; OTD5: 143±5; OTD7: 133±5 mg/dL). In cardiovascular parameters, both exercise training performed 5 days (OTD5) and 7 days (OTD7) a week were able to reduce systolic and mean arterial pressure (OSD: 113±2; OTD3: 111±2; OTD5: 102±3; OTD7: 103±2 mmHg), heart rate (OSD: 655±14; OTD3: 538±30; OTD5: 532±36; OTD7: 520±12 bpm), improve baroreflex sensitivity (Bradycardic response ‐ OSD: 1.5±0.2; OTD3: 2.1±0.1; OTD5: 2.5±0.3; OTD7: 2.4±0.1 bpm/mmHg), increase parasympathetic modulation (AF‐IP ‐ OSD: 16.5±1.8; OTD3: 20.8±2.2; OTD5: 39.1±7.5; OTD7: 38.8±8.4 nu), reduce sympathovagal balance (LF/HF ‐ OSD: 2,7±0.6; OTD3: 1.7±0.2; OTD5: 0.9±0.3; OTD7: 0.9±0.2) and improve the variance of systolic arterial pressure (VAR‐SAP ‐ OSD: 20±4; OTD3: 19±2; OTD5: 10±2; OTD7: 11±2 mg/dL). In conclusion, the female public, especially after menopause, lacks specific guidelines for the practice of physical activity, since the minimum recommended for the general population (3 days a week) is not effective in managing the observed cardiometabolic risk factors in the association of ovarian deprivation and obesity. Strength Training Protects High-Fat-Fed Ovariectomized Mice against Insulin Resistance and Hepatic Steatosis

Abstract:Menopause is characterized by a reduction in sex hormones in women and is associated with metabolic changes, including fatty liver and insulin resistance. Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and physical exercise, are necessary to prevent these undesirable changes. Strength training (ST) has been widely used because of the muscle and metabolic benefits it provides. Our study aims to evaluate the effects of ST on hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in ovariectomized mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) divided into four groups as follows: simulated sedentary surgery (SHAM-SED), trained simulated surgery (SHAM-EXE), sedentary ovariectomy (OVX-SED), and trained ovariectomy (OVX-EXE). They were fed an HFD for 9 weeks. ST was performed thrice a week. ST efficiently reduced body weight and fat percentage and increased lean mass in OVX mice. Furthermore, ST reduced the accumulation of ectopic hepatic lipids, increased AMPK phosphorylation, and inhibited the de novo lipogenesis pathway. OVX-EXE mice also showed a better glycemic profile, associated with greater insulin sensitivity identified by the euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp, and reduced markers of hepatic oxidative stress compared with sedentary animals. Our data support the idea that ST can be indicated as a non-pharmacological treatment approach to mitigate metabolic changes resulting from menopause.

The effects of aerobic exercise on cardiometabolic health in postmenopausal females: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Background: After menopause, reductions in ovarian hormones increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Aerobic exercise training has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk in older adults, but its effectiveness in postmenopausal females is less definitive. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to examine the: (1) effects of aerobic training, and (2) association between aerobic training intensity and cardiometabolic health outcomes in postmenopausal females. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Data sources and methods: Six electronic databases were searched from inception to July 21, 2023 for aerobic training interventions reporting cardiometabolic outcomes in postmenopausal females. Data were synthesized qualitatively and random-effects meta-analyses and subgroup analyses (light, moderate, and vigorous intensity) were performed. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Results: Fifty-nine studies (n = 4,225; 45-78 years old) were identified, 53 (n = 3,821) were included in the quantitative analyses. Aerobic training interventions varied in frequency (3-21×/week), intensity, type, time (8-60 min/session), and duration (3-52 weeks). Aerobic training improved systolic blood pressure (mean difference (MD) = -4.41 mmHg, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) [-7.29, -1.52], p = 0.01), resting heart rate (MD = -3.08 bpm, 95%CI [-5.11, -1.05], p < 0.01), body mass index (BMI, MD = -0.65 kg/m2, 95%CI [-0.99, -0.31], p < 0.01), waist circumference (MD = -2.03 cm, 95%CI [-2.65, -1.41], p < 0.01), body fat (MD = -2.57 kg, 95%CI [-3.65, -1.49], p < 0.01), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD = -10.46 mg/dL, 95%CI [-16.31, -4.61], p < 0.01), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD = 3.28 mg/dL, 95%CI [0.20, 6.36], p = 0.04) and cardiorespiratory fitness (standardized MD = 1.38, 95%CI [1.13, 1.64], p < 0.01). There was a very low certainty of evidence for all outcomes. In subgroup analyses, light- and vigorous intensities were beneficial for BMI with no effect for moderate-intensity exercise (p < 0.01). Light intensity showed a beneficial effect (p = 0.02) for glucose levels (p < 0.01) and triglycerides; there was no effect with moderate or vigorous intensities. Conclusion: Aerobic training may improve cardiometabolic health outcomes in postmenopausal females. There may be differential effects of exercise intensity on BMI, blood triglycerides, and blood glucose; however, this warrants further investigation. Registration: PROSPERO-CRD42022313350.
Exercise Training and Calorie Restriction Influence the Metabolic Parameters in Ovariectomized Female Rats

Abstract:The estrogen deficiency after menopause leads to overweight or obesity, and physical exercise is one of the important modulators of this body weight gain. Female Wistar rats underwent ovariectomy surgery (OVX) or sham operation (SO). OVX and SO groups were randomized into new groups based on the voluntary physical activity (with or without running) and the type of diet for 12 weeks. Rats were fed standard chow (CTRL), high triglyceride diet (HT), or restricted diet (CR). The metabolic syndrome was assessed by measuring the body weight gain, the glucose sensitivity, and the levels of insulin, triglyceride, leptin, and aspartate aminotransferase transaminase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The exercise training combined with the CR resulted in improvements in the glucose tolerance and the insulin sensitivity. Plasma TG, AST, and ALT levels were significantly higher in OVX rats fed with HT but these high values were suppressed by exercise and CR. Compared to SO animals, estrogen deprivation with HT caused a significant increase in leptin level. Our data provide evidence that CR combined with voluntary physical exercise can be a very effective strategy to prevent the development of a metabolic syndrome induced by high calorie diet.

Abstract:Hypertensive postmenopausal women are more likely to develop adverse cardiac remodelling and respond less effectively to drug treatment than men. High intensity interval exercise (HIIE) is a non-pharmacological strategy for the treatment of hypertension, however, the effectiveness in women remains uncertain. This study was designed to evaluate (1) effects of HIIE training upon morphological and functional markers of cardiovascular health in female SHR and (2) to determine whether the hormonal shift induced by ovariectomy could influence cardiovascular responses to HIIE. 36 SHR were randomly assigned to 4 groups: ovariectomised sedentary, ovariectomised trained, sham-operated sedentary and sham-operated trained. The trained rats performed HIIE 5 days/week for 8 weeks. Blood pressure and echocardiographic measurements were performed before and after training in animals. Cardiac response to β-adrenergic stimulation and the expression of calcium regulatory proteins and estrogen receptors in heart samples were assessed. Endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in response to acetylcholine was evaluated in aortic rings as well as the expression of nitric oxide synthase isoforms (eNOS and P-eNOS) by western blotting. In both groups of trained SHR, HIIE induced eccentric cardiac remodelling with greater inotropic and chronotropic effects, as well as an increase in SERCA and β1AR expression. However, although the trained rats showed improved endothelial function and expression of eNOS and P-eNOS in the aorta, there was no demonstrated effect on blood pressure. Additionally, the responses to HIIE training were not affected by ovariectomy. This work highlights the importance of assessing the cardiovascular efficacy and safety of different exercise modalities in women.

Abstract:HIV-1 is dual-tropic for CD4+ T lymphocytes and macrophages, but virus production in the macrophages becomes manifest only during late-stage infection, after CD4+ T cell functions are lost, and when opportunistic pathogens begin to flourish. In this study, the SHIV/macaque model of HIV pathogenesis was used to assess the role of cytokines in regulating virus replication in the two cell types. We injected complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) intradermally into SHIV(KU)-infected macaques, and infused Schistosoma mansoni eggs into the liver and lungs of others. Tissues examined from these animals demonstrated that macrophages induced by CFA did not support viral replication while those induced by S. mansoni eggs had evidence of productive infection. RT-PCR analysis showed that both Th1 (IL-2 and IFN-gamma) and Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10) were present in the CFA lesions but only the Th2 cytokines were found in the S. mansoni lesions. Follow-up studies in macaque cell cultures showed that whereas IFN-gamma caused enhancement of virus replication in CD4+ T cells, it curtailed viral replication in infected macrophages. In contrast, IL-4 enhanced viral replication in infected macrophages. These studies strongly suggest that cytokines regulate the sequential phases of HIV replication in CD4 T cells and macrophages.

Abstract:There is a need to investigate the effect of lifestyle modifications on cardiometabolic health-related issues that occur during menopause. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of resistance and endurance circuit training program alone (exercise group, n = 34) with the effect of time-restricted eating (16:8) combined with a training program (combination group, n = 28) on cardiometabolic health in 62 menopausal women (aged 51.3 ± 4.69 years). Testing was conducted before and after a 12-week period and included an assessment of body composition, glycemic control, lipid panel, blood pressure, and anthropometric measurements. Decreases in body mass index and systolic blood pressure were significantly greater in the combination group than in the exercise group (F(1,60) = 4.482, p = 0.038, η 2 = 0.07; F(1,57) = 5.215, p = 0.026, η 2 = 0.08, respectively, indicating moderate effects). There were significant decreases in fat mass ( p = 0.001, r = 0.654), glucose level ( p = 0.017, r = 0.459), insulin level ( p = 0.013, r = 0.467), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance ( p = 0.009, r = 0.499), waist circumference ( p = 0.002, r = 0.596), and waist-to-height ratio ( p = 0.003, r = 0.588) (indicating moderate effect) in the combination group, while there were no significant changes in the exercise group. There were no changes in lipid panel indicators in either group. This is the first study to investigate the effect of time-restricted eating combined with exercise in menopausal women. The results of the study provide evidence that the combination of time-restricted eating and exercise leads to a greater body mass index reduction than exercise alone in menopausal women.

Abstract:Cardiovascular risk increases during the aging process in women with atherosclerosis and exercise training is a strategy for management of cardiac risks in at-risk populations. Therefore, the aims of this study were to evaluate: (1) the influence of the aging process on cardiac function, hemodynamics, cardiovascular autonomic modulation, and baroreflex sensitivity in females with atherosclerosis at the onset of reproductive senescence; and (2) the impact of exercise training on age-related dysfunctions in this model. Eighteen Apolipoprotein-E knockout female mice were divided equally into young (Y), middle-aged (MA), and trained middle-aged (MAT). Echocardiographic exams were performed to verify cardiac morphology and function. Cannulation for direct recording of blood pressure and heart rate, and analysis of cardiovascular autonomic modulation, baroreflex sensitivity were performed. The MA had lower cardiac diastolic function (E'/A' ratio), and higher aortic thickness, heart rate and mean arterial pressure, lower heart rate variability and baroreflex sensitivity compared with Y. There were no differences between Y and MAT in these parameters. Positive correlation coefficients were found between aortic wall thickness with hemodynamics data. The aging process causes a series of deleterious effects such as hemodynamic overload and dysautonomia in female with atherosclerosis. Exercise training was effective in mitigating aged-related dysfunctions.

Abstract:The increased risk for cardiometabolic disease with the onset of menopause is widely studied and likely precipitated by the decline in endogenous estradiol (E2), yet the precise mechanisms are unknown. The gut microbiome is involved in estrogen metabolism and has been linked to metabolic disease, suggesting its potential involvement in the postmenopausal phenotype. Furthermore, menopause-associated risk factors, as well as gut ecology, are altered with exercise. Therefore, we studied microbial changes in an ovariectomized (OVX vs. Sham) rat model of high (HCR) and low (LCR) intrinsic aerobic capacity (n = 8-10/group) in relation to changes in body weight/composition, glucose tolerance, and liver triglycerides (TG). Nine weeks after OVX, HCR rats were moderately protected against regional adipose tissue gain and liver TG accumulation (P < 0.05 for both). Microbial diversity and number of the Bacteroidetes phylum were significantly increased in LCR with OVX, but unchanged in HCR OVX relative to Sham. Plasma short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), produced by bacteria in the gut and recognized as metabolic signaling molecules, were significantly greater in HCR Sham relative to LCR Sham rats (P = 0.05) and were decreased with OVX in both groups. These results suggest that increased aerobic capacity may be protective against menopause-associated cardiometabolic risk and that gut ecology, and production of signaling molecules such as SCFA, may contribute to the mediation.
Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Excess Body Fat Exhibit Atypical Sympathetic Autonomic Modulation That is Partially Reversed by Aerobic Physical Training

Abstract:Objective The aetiology of impairments in autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains unclear, as does the impact of aerobic physical training (APT) on controlling endocrine‐metabolic disorders and HRV. This is because these women often present excess body fat. Therefore, we assessed whether the dysregulation in autonomic modulation of HRV in women with PCOS is due to endocrine‐metabolic disorders and whether the combination of excess body fat with endocrine‐metabolic disorders amplifies cardiovascular autonomic deficits. We also investigated whether APT positively influences autonomic modulation of HRV in PCOS. Design Non‐randomised clinical trial. Participants Women with and without PCOS with different percentages of body fat. Measurements Participants were divided into four groups: women without PCOS with a body fat percentage between 22% and 29% (CONTROL group; 22%–29%); CONTROL (30%–37%) group; PCOS (22%–29%) group; and PCOS (30%–37%) group. Hemodynamic, metabolic, and hormonal characteristics and HRV parameters were obtained before and after 16 weeks of APT. Results The PCOS (22%–29%) group exhibited lower vagal modulation than the CONTROL (22%–29%) group. In contrast, no significant differences were observed between the CONTROL (30%–37%) and PCOS (30%–37%) groups. Furthermore, the PCOS (30%–37%) group demonstrated lower sympathetic modulation than the PCOS (22%–29%) group. After APT, the PCOS (22%–29%) group increased in vagal modulation, while the PCOS (30%–37%) group increased in sympathetic modulation. Conclusion PCOS affects vagal modulation; however, this effect may be masked at elevated levels of body fat. Additionally, the combination of excess body fat with endocrine‐metabolic dysregulation appears to reduce sympathetic modulation, possibly due to sympathetic drive hyperactivity. APT positively affected HRV in both PCOS groups.

Circulating myokines IL-6, IL-15 and FGF21 response to training is altered by exercise type but not by menopause in women with obesity

Abstract:To examine the effects of a time-matched endurance vs. concurrent training on circulating IL-6, IL-13, IL-15, IL-15Ra, FGF21 levels in postmenopausal women with obesity, and to determine these myokines response to endurance training pre- and postmenopause. Thirty-five sedentary postmenopausal women with obesity were randomly divided into endurance training (EN1, N = 10), concurrent training (CON, N = 13) or no training group (CT, N = 12). Additionally, twelve sedentary premenopausal women with obesity were added to an endurance training group (EN2, N = 12). Participants took part in a 12-week supervised intervention, performing 3 sessions/week of 60 min/session. Before and after the interventions, body composition and fitness were assessed, and blood samples obtained to measure serum myokines levels. Total fat mass decreased in all exercised groups (CON,−5.2%; EN1,−5.3%; EN2,−5.6%). In postmenopausal women, serum IL-6, IL-15 and IL-15Ra decreased after training (P<0.01), finding a pronounced reduction in IL-6 (−42% vs. −16%) and IL-15 (−50% vs. −31%) when comparing EN1 to CON (P<0.05). Serum FGF21 was only reduced in the EN1 (−27%; P=0.012). While EN1 and EN2 comparison, reported differences for IL-15Rα concentration (−28% vs. −40%; P=0.023). Finally, in EN2, the delta change of fat mass and IL-6, IL-15 and IL-15Rα were associated (r = 0.605; r = 0.546; r = 0.515; P<0.05). IL-13 showed undetected concentrations. Circulating IL-6, IL-15 and FGF21 response to training is altered by exercise type but not by menopause in women with obesity. Endurance training promotes a higher reduction of these myokines, potentially activating their intricate immune and fat mass regulation roles in postmenopausal women with obesity.

The study aimed to determine the lipolytic activity in different adipose tissue depots of ovariectomized rats submitted to a high-fat diet. Also, to analyze the expression of estrogen receptors in adipose tissues and perform histological and morphometric analyzes of these deposits. Female rats were ovariectomized (O) or sham operated (S). The animals were divided into groups: ovariectomized with high-fat diet (OF), sham-operated with high-fat diet (SF), ovariectomized with control diet (OC) or sham-operated with control diet as the control group (SC). After 24 weeks of consuming the diets, rats were killed and adipose tissue deposits were removed. Polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze the expression of estrogen receptors in adipose tissues, lipolysis assay and histological analysis. Both the high-fat diet and ovariectomy increased body weight and adiposity. There was hypertrophy of adipocytes. Estrogen replacement therapy modulate lipolytic activity in different adipose depots, with different responses in relation to estrogen receptors. Estrogen receptor expression varied between fat depots. Mesenteric adipose tissue showed greater sensitivity to estrogen compared with others. Estrogen increased lipolytic activity in some fat depots, reducing in others. Expression of ERs depends of hormonal status and adipose tissue location, which may explain distinct actions of estrogen on the metabolism of adipose tissue and on the production of adipokines by them.
Intracellular pH regulates bovine sperm motility and protein phosphorylation.

Abstract:Bovine sperm in neat caudal epididymal fluid become motile in response to either pH elevation or dilution of the fluid. Buffers containing permeant weak acids at physiologic concentrations are able to mimic these effects of caudal fluid. These observations lead to the hypothesis that a pH-dependent epididymal fluid quiescence factor regulates bovine sperm motility by modulating sperm intracellular pH (pHi). Here we report that sperm pHi, measured with the fluorescent pH probe carboxyfluorescein, increases by approximately 0.4 units in response to either of these motility-initiating manipulations. At least 26 discrete phosphoprotein bands are distinguishable by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after incubation of intact caudal sperm with 32PO4. A prominent phosphoprotein, with Mr approximately 255,000 (pp255) and a relatively high specific radioactivity, is reversibly dephosphorylated in response to elevations in pHi that initiate sperm motility. Unlike most of the sperm phosphoproteins, the extraction of pp255 requires reducing agents. This phosphoprotein cosediments with the sperm heads but not the tail, midpiece, soluble, or plasma membrane fractions. No other pHi-dependent phosphorylation changes are apparent in gels of whole sperm extracts. However, subcellular fractionation allows the detection of increased phosphorylation of two plasma membrane phosphoproteins (Mr approximately 105,000 and 97,000) and decreased phosphorylation of another plasma membrane phosphoprotein (Mr approximately 120,000) in response to increasing pHi. This is the first report describing changes in endogenous phosphoproteins from intact motile and nonmotile bovine sperm that are regulated by pHi.
Moderate Physical Training Ameliorates Cardiovascular Dysfunction Induced by High Fat Diet After Cessation of Training in Adult Rats

Abstract:We aimed to test whether moderate physical training can induce long-lasting protection against cardiovascular risk factors induced by high fat diet (HFD) intake, even after cessation of training. 90-days-old Wistar rats were submitted to a sedentary lifestyle or moderate physical training, three times a week, for 30 days. Following this, at 120 days-of age, sedentary and trained rats received a hypercaloric diet (HFD) or a commercial diet normal fat diet (NFD) for 30 days. Body weight (BW) and food intake were evaluated weekly. At 150 days-of age, hemodynamic measures (systolic, diastolic, mean blood pressure, pulse pressure, pulse interval and heart rate) were made via an indwelling femoral artery catheter. Beat-to-beat data were analyzed to calculate power spectra of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and pulse interval. After euthanasia, mesenteric fat pads were removed and weighted and total blood was stored for later analysis of lipid profile. Consumption of a HFD increased blood pressure (BP), pulse pressure, low frequency BP variability, BW gain, fat pad stores and induced dyslipidemia. Interestingly, prior physical training was able to partially protect against this rise in BP and body fat stores. Prior physical training did not totally protect against the effects of HFD consumption but previously trained animals did demonstrate resistance to the development of cardiometabolic alterations, which illustrate that the benefits of physical training may be partially maintained even after 30 days of detraining period.

The Effects of Whole-Body Vibration Exercise Combined With an Isocaloric High-Fructose Diet on Osteoporosis and Immunomodulation in Ovariectomized Mice

Abstract:Background: Osteoporosis and immune-associated disorders are highly prevalent among menopausal women, and diet control and exercise exert beneficial effects on physiological modulation in this population. A controlled diet with a low fat content and a balanced caloric intake improves menopausal health, but the health effects of excessive fructose consumption on menopausal women are yet to be confirmed. In addition, whole-body vibration (WBV), a safe passive-training method, has been shown to have multiple beneficial effects on metabolism regulation, obesity, and bone health. Methods: The ovariectomized (OVX) C57BL/6J model was used to verify the effects of WBV combined with a high-fructose diet (HFrD) for 16 weeks on physiological modulation and immune responses. The mice were randomly allocated to sham, OVX, OVX+HFrD, and OVX+HFrD+WBV groups, which were administered with the indicated ovariectomy, dietary and WBV training treatments. We conducted growth, dietary intake, glucose homeostasis, body composition, immunity, inflammation, histopathology, and osteoporotic assessments (primary outcomes). Results: Our results showed that the isocaloric HFrD in OVX mice negated estrogen-deficiency-associated obesity, but that risk factors such as total cholesterol, glucose intolerance, osteoporosis, and liver steatosis still contributed to the development of metabolic diseases. Immune homeostasis in the OVX mice was also negatively affected by the HFrD diet, via the comprehensive stimulation of T cell activation, causing inflammation. The WBV intervention combined with the HFrD model significantly ameliorated weight gain, glucose intolerance, total cholesterol, and inflammatory cytokines (interferon gamma [IFN-γ], interleukin [IL]-17, and IL-4) in the OVX mice, although osteoporosis and liver steatosis were not affected compared to the negative control group. These findings indicate that an isocaloric high-fructose diet alone may not result in menopausal obesity, but that some deleterious physiological impacts still exist. Conclusion: The WBV method may modulate the physiological impacts of menopause and the HFrD diet, and should be considered as an alternative exercise prescription for people with poor compliance or who are unable or unwilling to use traditional methods to improve their health. In future studies, using the WBV method as a preventive or therapeutic strategy, combined with nutritional interventions, medication, and other exercise prescriptions, may prove beneficial for maintaining health in menopausal women.
Effect of Concurrent Training on Body Composition and Gut Microbiota in Postmenopausal Women with Overweight or Obesity

Abstract:Purpose: Menopause tends to be associated with an increased risk of obesity and abdominal fat mass (FM) and is associated with lower intestinal species diversity. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a high-intensity interval training and resistance training (HIIT + RT) program on body composition and intestinal microbiota composition in overweight or obese postmenopausal women. Methods: Participants (n = 17) were randomized in two groups: HIIT + RT group (3× per week, 12 wk) and control group without any training. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to measure whole-body and abdominal/visceral FM and fat-free mass. Intestinal microbiota composition was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing at baseline and at the study end, and the diet was controlled. Results: Compared with sedentary controls, physical fitness (maximal oxygen consumption, peak power output) increased, total abdominal and visceral FM decreased, and segmental muscle mass increased in the training group. Although the HIIT + RT protocol did not modify α-diversity and taxonomy, it significantly influenced microbiota composition. Moreover, various intestinal microbiota members were correlated with HIIT + RT-induced body composition changes, and baseline microbiota composition predicted the response to the HIIT + RT program. Conclusions: HIIT + RT is an effective modality to reduce abdominal/visceral FM and improve physical capacity in nondieting overweight or obese postmenopausal women. Training modified intestinal microbiota composition, and the response to training seems to depend on the initial microbiota profile. More studies are needed to determine whether microbiota composition could predict the individual training response.

Abstract:We tested the hypothesis that increasing the exercise dose or changing the exercise mode would augment hypotensive effects when traditional aerobic exercise training failed to produce it in postmenopausal women. Sixty-five postmenopausal women with essential hypertension were randomly allocated into the continuous aerobic training (CAT) and non-exercising control (CON) groups. CAT group cycled at moderate intensity 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Individuals who failed to decrease systolic blood pressure (BP) were classified as non-responders ( n = 34) and performed an additional 12 weeks of exercise training with either increasing the exercise dose or changing the exercise mode. The 3 follow-up groups were continuous aerobic training 3 times a week, continuous aerobic training 4 times a week, and high-intensity interval training. After the first 12 weeks of exercise training, systolic BP decreased by 1.5 mmHg (NS) with a wide range of inter-individual responses (−23 to 23 mmHg). Sixty-seven percent of women who were initially classified as non-responders participated in the second training period. Sixty percent of women who participated in continuous exercise training 3 or 4 times a week at greater exercise intensities reduced systolic BP. All (100%) of the women who performed high-intensity interval training experienced significant reductions in systolic BP. Traditional aerobic exercise was not sufficient to decrease BP significantly in the majority of postmenopausal women. However, those women who were not sensitive to recommended exercise may reduce BP if they were exposed to continuous aerobic exercise at higher intensities and/or volumes or a different mode of exercise.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a period of aerobic high intensity training on central- and peripheral cardiovascular parameters in older post-menopausal women. Eleven healthy post-menopausal (>10 years after menopause) women (mean age: 64 years; BMI: 25.3 kg m −2 ) completed an 8-week period of supervised, high intensity cycle training, with sessions conducted three times per week. Before and after the training period maximal oxygen uptake, body composition, popliteal artery flow mediated dilation, exercise hyperemia, arterial blood pressure, and plasma lipids were assessed. In addition, levels of estrogen related receptor α (ERRα) and vasodilator enzymes were determined in muscle biopsy samples. Training induced an 18% increase ( P < 0.001) in maximal oxygen uptake. Plasma High-density lipoprotein (HDL) was higher ( P < 0.05) after than before the training period. Fat mass was reduced (4.9%; P < 0.01), whereas lean body mass was unaltered. Mean arterial blood pressure was unchanged (91 vs. 88 mmHg; P = 0.058) with training. Training did not induce a change in popliteal flow mediated dilation. Exercise hyperemia at submaximal exercise was lower ( P < 0.01; 11 and 4.6% at 10 and 16 W, respectively) after compared to before training. Muscle ERRα (~1.7-fold; P < 0.01) and eNOS (~1.4-fold; P < 0.05) were higher after the training intervention. The current study demonstrates that, in older post-menopausal women, a period of aerobic high intensity training effectively increases maximal oxygen uptake and improves the cardiovascular health profile, without a parallel improvement in conduit artery function.
