Abstract:Solid-state luminescence of organic π-conjugated molecules has become an international cutting-edge research area in recent years. Theoretical studies reveal that the optical properties in the aggregate state are closely related to the interactions between the transition dipoles of adjacent molecules. Therefore, manipulating the intermolecular interactions and stacking modes can efficiently modulate the luminescent properties of organic crystals. Herein, we review recent studies focused on understanding the role of molecular packing structures and optical properties in π-conjugated organic luminescent crystals. Additionally, the various applications of stimuli response, as well as amplified spontaneous emission and organic solid-state laser, are also presented. Moreover, the development and future prospects of this research field are proposed. This review provides an in-depth understanding of the molecular structure–property relationship, which can guide the specific design of organic luminescent molecules with desirable optoelectronic properties in the aggregate states.

Abstract:Design of host-guest structure has been an important direction in the development of organic long-persistent luminescence (LPL) materials, which have challenged traditional inorganic materials in some applications, such as anti-counterfeiting and bioimaging. The charge separation of donor-acceptor between host and guest is an effective way to induce LPL emission. Here, three crystalline materials were prepared by a convenient host-guest doping method at room temperature under ambient surrounding, i.e. in the presence of oxygen. Two kinds of crystals with long-lived charge separated states exhibited visible LPL emission with over 8 s and 6 s of duration. The persistent room-temperature phosphorescence effect caused by different generation efficiency of charge separated states was the main reason for the difference of LPL duration time. The crystal without charge separation had no LPL phenomenon because it was not a donor-acceptor system. This work indicates that the generation of charge separated states and their generation efficiency are the two key factors affecting the LPL properties and provides a new understanding for the design of organic LPL materials.

Abstract:A long‐persistent luminescence material is developed based on undoped metal halide CsCdCl3 synthesized by hydrothermal approach. The persistent luminescence is observed at room temperature with a long duration of 6000 s. Moreover, the CsCdCl3 crystals exhibit excellent stability against environment oxygen/moisture, heat and ultraviolet light. Finally, successful applications of such long‐persistent luminescence material in dual‐mode information storage‐reading are demonstrated. Application of long‐persistent luminescence (LPL) materials in many technological fields is in the spotlight. However, the exploration of undoped persistent luminescent materials with high emission efficiency, robust stability, and long persistent duration remains challenging. Here, inorganic cesium cadmium chlorine (CsCdCl3) is developed, featuring remarkable LPL characteristics at room temperature, which is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Excited by ultraviolet light, the CsCdCl3 crystals exhibit an intense yellow emission with a large photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈90%. Different from the reported systems with lanthanides or transition metals doping, the CsCdCl3 crystals without dopants perform yellow LPL with a long duration of 6000 s. Joint experiment‐theory characterizations reveal the intrinsic point defects of CsCdCl3 act as the trap centers of excited electrons and the carrier de‐trapping process from such trap sites to localized emission centers contributes to the LPL. Encouraged by the attractive fluorescence and persistent luminescence as well as good stability of CsCdCl3 against environment oxygen/moisture (75%), heat (100 °C for 10 h), and ultraviolet light irradiation, an effective dual‐mode information storage‐reading application is demonstrated. The results open up a new frontier for exploring LPL materials without dopants and provide an opportunity for advanced information storage compatible for practical applications.

Abstract:Luminescent small, all‐organic molecules are of tremendous interest in materials and life science applications. Nevertheless, targeted design requires a basic understanding of the excited state deactivation pathways of the molecules themselves, and the modulations of the processes that occur in the solid state. This particularly concerns crystalline molecular solids, as here not only solid‐state rigidification contributes to these modulations, but specific intermolecular interactions as well. Starting from the molecular properties, this work carefully disentangles all intramolecular and intermolecular factors to the radiative and nonradiative processes in crystalline all‐organic molecular solids to provide guidelines for targeted molecular materials design.

Abstract:AbstractOrganic afterglow materials have drawn increasing attention for their great potential in practical applications. Until now, most of them just show the lifetimes in milliseconds or seconds, while the realization of long persistent luminescence (LPL) lasting for minutes or even hours is difficult. In 2017, Adachi and Kabe successfully realize the LPL with a duration longer than 1 hour in a purely organic system, which can be even comparable to some excellent inorganic materials. However, partially for the unclear structure‐property relationship, organic LPL materials are still rather scarce, especially for the stable ones in air or aqueous solution. In this review, we present the recent progress in organic LPL, mainly focusing on the material design strategy and internal mechanism. It is anticipated that the deep understanding can be beneficial for the further development of organic LPL materials with good stability in air and even aqueous phase.

Abstract:Long-persistent luminescence (LPL), also known as afterglow, is a phenomenon in which the material shows long-lasting luminescence after the cessation of the excitation source. The research of LPL continues to attract much interest due to its fundamental nature and its potential in the development of the next generation of functional materials. However, most of the current LPL materials are multicomponent inorganic systems obtained after harsh synthetic procedures and often use rare-earth metals. Recently, metal free organic long-persistent luminescence (OLPL) has gained much interest because it can bypass many of the disadvantages of inorganic systems. To date, the most successful method to generate OLPL systems is to access charge-separated states through binary donor-acceptor exciplex systems. However, it has been reported that the ratios of the binary systems affect OLPL properties, complicating the reproducibility and large-scale production of OLPL materials. Simpler OLPL systems can overcome these issues for the benefit of the development and adoption of OLPL systems. Here, we report on the rational design and synthesis of a single-component OLPL system with detectable afterglow for at least 12 min under ambient conditions. This work exemplifies an easy design principle for new OLPL materials. The investigation of the material provides valuable insights toward the generation of OLPL from a single-component system.

Abstract:Due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and ease of structural modification, organic long-persistent luminescence (LPL) materials have garnered significant attention in organic light-emitting diodes, biological imaging, information encryption, and chemical sensing. Efficient charge separation and carrier migration by the host–guest structure or using polymers and crystal to build rigid environments are effective ways of preparing high-performance materials with long-lasting afterglow. In this study, four types of crystalline materials (MODPA: DDF-O, MODPA: DDF-CHO, MODPA: DDF-Br, and MODPA: DDF-TRC) were prepared by a convenient host–guest doping method at room temperature under ambient conditions, i.e., in the presence of oxygen. The first three types exhibited long-lived charge-separated (CS) states and achieved visible LPL emissions with durations over 7, 4, and 2 s, respectively. More surprisingly, for the DDF-O material prepared with PMMA as the polymer substrate, the afterglow time of DDF-O: PMMA was longer than 10 s. The persistent room-temperature phosphorescence effect caused by different CS state generation efficiencies and rigid environment were the main reason for the difference in LPL duration. The fourth crystalline material was without charge separation and exhibited no LPL because it was not a D-A system. The research results indicate that the CS state generation efficiency and a rigid environment are the key factors affecting the LPL properties. This work provides new understandings in designing organic LPL materials.

Long Persistent Luminescence Enabled by Dissociation of Triplet Intermediate States in an Organic Guest/Host System.

Abstract:Organic guest/host systems with long persistent luminescence (LPL) benefiting from the formation a long-lived charge-separated state have recently been demonstrated. However, the photogeneration mechanism of such key charge-separated states remains elusive. Here, we report the identification of intermediate triplet states with mixed local excitation and charge-transfer characters that connect the initial photo-excited singlet states and the long-lived charge-separated states. Using time-resolved optical spectroscopy, we observe the intersystem crossing from photo-excited singlet charge-transfer states to triplet intermediate states on a timescale of ~ 52 ns. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal that the long-lived triplet intermediate states ensure a relatively high efficiency of diffusion-driven charge separation to form the charge-separated state responsible for LPL emission. The findings in this work provide a rationale to develop new LPL materials which may also advance understanding of the mechanism of photon-to-charge conversion in many organic optoelectronic devices.
Ultralong afterglow and unity quantum yield from a transparent CsCdCl3:Mn crystal

Abstract:Transparent afterglow crystals are keenly desired for three‐dimensional information storage. Herein, CsCdCl3 perovskite crystals were grown by a programmable cooling procedure in a hydrothermal reactor. The pristine crystal showed an abnormal optical behavior where the absorption increased by 2.3 folds at high temperature, leading to a fourfold boost of photoluminescence (PL) intensity. After Mn2+ doping, the PL quantum yield was improved to nearly unity. Importantly, the doped crystals exhibited an ultralong afterglow up to 12 h after ceasing UV excitation and a high transmittance up to 75% in the visible region. This work brought a new member to the library of transparent afterglow crystal, opening up many possibilities to advanced applications such as volumetric display and three‐dimensional information encryption.

Organic Long Persistent Luminescence Through in Situ Generation of Cuprous(I) Ion Pairs in Ionic Solids

Abstract:Recent development of most organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL) systems employed binary or tertiary doping. However, the design strategies towards OLPL materials with hour-long afterglow duration are still quite limited. Here, we propose a novel OLPL system through melt-casting method with 0.1 mol % of Cu-I complexes: 2,2 '-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1 '-binaphthyl BINAP-CuX (X=Cl, Br and I) doped into the triphenylphosphine (TPP) host. The charge separation was initiated prior to excitation through host coordination with Cu-I complexes, resulting in semi-free halogen ions and in situ generated Cu-I cations, which forms TPP + BINAP-CuX ionic pairs and subsequently ionic solids. The OLPL lifetime can be readily modulated by different halogen atoms and the afterglow can last up to more than 3 hours perceivable to human eyes. This is a rare example of OLPL initiated through host-guest coordination that could potentially expand the definition of OLPL systems and design strategies.

Abstract:A macrocyclic molecule 15‐crown‐5 with CdX2 was hydrothermally constructed into metal‐organic linker, which was built into 2D metal‐organic frameworks with metal halide chains that play an external heavy atom effect to achieve long persistent luminescence at room temperature. Near white light emission is achieved in a single component, moreover adjustable phosphorescence is realized with longest visual time of 1‐2 s at ambient conditions. Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have raised particular attention among researchers for their potential uses in chemical sensing, optical recording devices, biological imaging, and security systems applications, due to the long‐lived triplet states. In this study, one‐pot method of reaction of appropriate ratio of crown ether ligand (15‐Crown‐5) and metallic salts (CdX2) is utilized to yield three metal halide‐based complexes (namely 15‐5‐CdCl2, 15‐5‐CdBr2, and 15‐5‐CdI2). In solid state, three complexes exhibit nearly standard white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.28, 0.32), (0.31, 0.39), (0.30, 0.34) at room temperature under UV radiation of 340 nm. Meanwhile, they display the excitation‐dependent room temperature phosphorescence from blue/cyan to green/yellow, especially, 15‐5‐CdCl2 and 15‐5‐CdBr2 exhibit color‐tunable and visible LPL with time‐resolved luminescence lifetime as high as 1–2 s. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the bright LPL of 15‐5‐CdCl2 and 15‐5‐CdBr2 arise from the crown ether ligand and aggregation state induced by halogen‐bond. The thus obtained LPL provides potentials in lighting and displaying devices, optical recording devices, security systems and so on.

Abstract:Long persistent luminescence materials (LPLMs) are promising candidates for various photonic applications, owing to their ability to store light. In spite of advancements in exploring of new LPLMs, the fabrication of transparent centimeter-sized LPLMs with pre-designed shapes, high productivity, long afterglow multicolor luminescence, and high chemical stability, is still challenging. Here, high-throughput manufacture of translucent crystal-glass composites via a classical injection molding (IM) technique is demonstrated, in which persistent phosphors (PPs)-amorphous silica nanoparticles-polymer composites are molded into different shapes then thermally treated at elevated temperatures to obtain glass composites with embedded PP particles and customized shapes. The structural characterizations endorse that the PP particles are preserved during high temperature sintering, and the resultant crystal-glass composites combine the unique benefits of both PPs and silica glass. Remarkably, the total production time to manufacture 100 pieces of centimeter-sized crystal-glass composites is 35 h, thus enabling high-throughput production of glass composite articles by the IM method. In addition, the injection molded crystal-glass composites demonstrate long afterglow multicolor luminescence and ultrahigh chemical durability. This study provides a massive production strategy for the fabrication of translucent and stable multicolor persistent luminescent objects with customized shapes, which can be used in numerous applications. High-throughput fabrication of translucent crystal-glass composites with different shapes, is achieved via an injection molding route. The as-fabricated crystal-glass composites exhibit long afterglow multicolor emissions and ultrahigh chemical durability, making them promising materials for various photonic applications in fields including security encryption, data storage, sensing, etc. image

Abstract:Purely organic long-persistent luminescence materials (OLPLMs) have received extensive attention in recent years due to their “green” preparation process, environmental friendliness and renewable resource characteristics. As an important branch of OLPLMs research and development, organic crystalline materials exhibit excellent long-persistent luminescence (LPL) properties through a facile crystal fabrication. However, no studies have yet highlighted how to enable flexibility of crystal-based OLPLMs. Here, we utilize a host-guest doping system and water-based preparation under ambient conditions to obtain two organic doped-crystals with different LPL durations due to the minor difference in guest structure. Then, we fabricate high-quality polymer fibers containing these two crystals separately to weave the flexible thin-film by electrospinning, still exhibiting outstanding LPL performance. This work sheds light on the molecular design of host-guest doping system, and will accelerate the research and development of large-area flexible manufacturing of crystal-based OLPLMs.

Abstract:The distinctive crystal characteristics of undoped LiGa5O8 allow the production of abundant defects and traps in the structure, contributing to attractive luminescent properties. In this work, the mechanoluminescent pathways of LiGa5O8 are demonstrated in terms of the defect induced localized energy levels and trap levels, which are further optimized by adjusting the synthesis atmosphere. The results suggest that the LiGa5O8 synthesized under a reducing atmosphere exhibits an extremely intense mechanoluminescence, which is even better than that of commercial ZnS:Cu. Because of the existence of shallow trap with the spontaneous transfer activity at room temperature, the mechanoluminescence of LiGa5O8 can also exhibit a persistent behavior, overcoming the transient emitting problem in most of the previous mechanoluminescent materials. In addition, the mechanoluminescence of LiGa5O8 can be easily and quickly recovered by refilling the energy in traps. As a result, the undoped LiGa5O8 is confirmed to be an efficient material with intense, persistent, and recoverable mechanoluminescence, which is promising to substitute the doped ones for various applications.

Abstract:Amorphous organic long‐persistent luminescence materials (OLPLMs) can realize simpler solution processing and large‐area uniform luminescence, which luminescent properties are significantly influenced by the rigid environment. However, research on utilizing the rigidity to promote long‐persistent luminescence (LPL) properties of amorphous OLPLMs is still relatively rare due to the lack of an unambiguous and effective strategy to construct the rigid environment. Here, we propose a universal strategy to enhance the LPL performance of organic host‐guest doping systems by UV curing, which utilizes the rigid environment constructed by UV curing to promote the interaction between host and guest, thus inducing the generation of highly efficient LPL performance. This solution‐processable, large‐area and "easy to realize" material fabrication strategy can make amorphous OLPLMs show broader application prospects in some fields, such as anti‐counterfeiting, non‐destructive detection, and pattern marking or indication.
