Abstract:Nanoscale α-MnO2 with different morphologies (nanoparticles, nanoflowers and nanorods) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and tested in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The catalytic activity of α-MnO2 mainly relied on the specific surface area and crystallinity, and followed the order of α-MnO2 nanoflowers>α-MnO2 nanorods>α-MnO2 nanoparticles>commercial MnO2. Acidic condition was more beneficial to CIP removal than neutral condition, and the degradation would be greatly accelerated in alkaline circumstance. The introduction of chloride and bicarbonate displayed concentration-dependent dual effect. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) exerted the detrimental effect on CIP degradation. Eleven oxidation products were identified by UPLC–MS/MS and the changes of their concentrations were monitored, five products showed monotonous uptrend while four intermediates present monotonous downtrend once they were generated. Piperazine ring cleavage, hydroxylation and F/OH substitution were found to be the important oxidation pathways. The acute toxicity of resulted solution gradually decreased with the lapse of time, and higher PMS concentration favored the detoxification. The CIP removal in α-MnO2/PMS process was also efficient under the actual water background, which was testified by the results of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM).
Detoxification of Ciprofloxacin in an Anaerobic Bioprocess Supplemented with Magnetic Carbon Nanotubes: Contribution of Adsorption and Biodegradation Mechanisms

Abstract:In anaerobic bioreactors, the electrons produced during the oxidation of organic matter can potentially be used for the biological reduction of pharmaceuticals in wastewaters. Common electron transfer limitations benefit from the acceleration of reactions through utilization of redox mediators (RM). This work explores the potential of carbon nanomaterials (CNM) as RM on the anaerobic removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Pristine and tailored carbon nanotubes (CNT) were first tested for chemical reduction of CIP, and pristine CNT was found as the best material, so it was further utilized in biological anaerobic assays with anaerobic granular sludge (GS). In addition, magnetic CNT were prepared and also tested in biological assays, as they are easier to be recovered and reused. In biological tests with CNM, approximately 99% CIP removal was achieved, and the reaction rates increased ≈1.5-fold relatively to the control without CNM. In these experiments, CIP adsorption onto GS and CNM was above 90%. Despite, after applying three successive cycles of CIP addition, the catalytic properties of magnetic CNT were maintained while adsorption decreased to 29 ± 3.2%, as the result of CNM overload by CIP. The results suggest the combined occurrence of different mechanisms for CIP removal: adsorption on GS and/or CNM, and biological reduction or oxidation, which can be accelerated by the presence of CNM. After biological treatment with CNM, toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri was evaluated, resulting in ≈ 46% detoxification of CIP solution, showing the advantages of combining biological treatment with CNM for CIP removal.

Multi-omics analyses reveal molecular mechanisms for the antagonistic toxicity of carbon nanotubes and ciprofloxacin to Escherichia coli

Abstract:With the increasing production and application, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are being discharged into the environment, where they can interact with co-existing contaminants, causing complicated joint toxicity to organisms that needs to be studied. The case study of ENMs-contaminant joint toxicity and the understanding of relative mechanisms are very insufficient, particularly the mechanisms of molecular interactions and governing processes. Herein, a typical ENMs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 0-60 mg/L), and a common antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP, 0-900 mg/L), were selected as the analytes. Their joint toxicity to a model microbe Escherichia coli was specifically investigated via biochemical, transcriptomics, and metabolomics approaches. The result revealed an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition between CNTs and CIP. Mitigations in cell membrane disruption and oxidative stress were involved in the antagonistic action. CIP (48.8-244 mg/L) decreased the bioaccumulation of CNTs (7.2 mg/L) via reducing cell-surface hydrophobicity and hindering the bio-nano interaction, which could attenuate the toxicity of CNTs to bacteria. CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) alleviated the disturbance of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) to gene expressions especially related to nitrogen compound metabolism, oxidoreductase activity, and iron-sulfur protein maturation, probably through relieving the CIP-induced inhibition of DNA gyrase activity. Further, CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) offset the impact of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) on bacterial metabolome via the regulation of biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and metabolisms of some amino acids and glutathione. The findings shed new light on the molecular mechanisms by which ENMs present joint effect on contaminant toxicity, and provide important information for risk assessments of CNTs and fluoroquinolones in the environment.
Unraveling individual and combined toxicity of nano/microplastics and ciprofloxacin to Synechocystis sp. at the cellular and molecular levels

Abstract:Although nanoplastics/microplastics (NPs/MPs) may interact with co-contaminants (e.g. antibiotics) in aquatic systems, little is known about their combined toxicity. Here, we compared the individual toxicity of NPs/MPs or ciprofloxacin (CIP, a very commonly detected antibiotic) and their combined toxicity toward a unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. in terms of the cellular responses and metabolomic analysis. We found that CIP exhibited an antagonistic effect with NPs/MPs due to its adsorption onto the surface of NPs/MPs. Particle size-dependent toxic effects of NPs/MPs were observed. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was verified as an important factor for NPs/MPs to inhibit cell growth, other than for CIP. Metabolomics further revealed that Synechocystis sp. up-regulated glycerophospholipids, amino acids, nucleotides, and carbohydrates to tolerate CIP pressure. NPs/MPs downregulated the TCA cycle and glycerophospholipids metabolism and impaired the primary production and membrane integrity via adhesion with Synechocystis sp.. Additionally, the toxicity of NPs/MPs throughout ten growth cycles at a sublethal concentration unveiled its potential risks in interfering with metabolism. Collectively, our findings provide insights into the joint ecotoxicity of NPs/MPs and antibiotics, and highlight the potential risks of co-pollutants at environmental relevant concentrations.

Abstract:Nanoparticles and antibiotics are toxic to humans and ecosystems, and they inevitably coexist in the wastewater treatment plants. Hence, the co-existence effects and stress mechanism of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) on simultaneous nitrification, endogenous denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNEDPR) by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) were investigated here. The co-existence stress of 5 mg/L CuO NPs and 5 mg/L CIP resulted in the synergistic inhibitory effect on nutrient removal. Transformation inhibition mechanisms of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) with CuO NPs and CIP addition were time-dependent. Furthermore, the long-term stress mainly inhibited PO 4 3- -P removal by inhibiting phosphorus release process, while short-term stress mainly inhibited phosphorus uptake process. The synergistic inhibitory effect of CuO NPs and CIP may be due to the changes of physicochemical characteristics under the co-existence of CuO NPs and CIP. This further altered the sludge characteristics, microbial community structure and functional metabolic pathways under the long-term stress. Resistance genes analysis exhibited that the co-existence stress of CuO NPs and CIP induced the amplification of qnrA (2.38 folds), qnrB (4.70 folds) and intI1 (3.41 folds) compared with the control group.

Abstract:The extensive use of pharmaceuticals has increased their presence in the environment, posing significant ecological and public health concerns. The current study reports the magnetic nanocomposite (M-ABAC) synthesis using the algal-bacterial sludge as the precursor for activated carbon and evaluates its potential in fluoroquinolone antibiotics removal. The activated carbon from algal-bacterial sludge was composited with Fe3O4 nanoparticles using the co-precipitation method. The M-ABAC was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). M-ABAC was employed for antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal by combined adsorption and heterogenous Fenton degradation. The adsorption studies reveal that the Langmuir isotherm best fits the experimental data, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 81.6 mg/g. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model well describes adsorption kinetics. Fenton catalytic degradation was performed using H2O2 as the activating agent. The optimal H2O2 dosage was observed to be 10 mM. A CIP adsorptive removal efficiency of 75% was observed at 2 g/L dosage of M-ABAC in a 200 ppm CIP solution. Simultaneous adsorption and Fenton catalytic degradation further enhanced the removal efficiency to 92%. Radical scavengers experiment revealed that the hydroxyl radical (•OH) was the dominant reactive oxidation species. The degradation products of the CIP were identified using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (LC-QTOF-MS). The possible CIP degradation mechanisms include decarboxylation, piperazine moiety degradation, defluorination, and hydroxylation.
Differential toxicity of various mineral nanoparticles to Synechocystis sp.: With and without ciprofloxacin

Abstract:Mineral nanoparticles (M-NPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, but their potential harms to primary producers and impacts on the toxicity of coexisting pollutants are largely unknown. Herein, the toxicity mechanisms of various M-NPs (i.e., SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , and TiO 2 NPs) to Synechocystis sp. in absence and presence of ciprofloxacin (CIP) were comprehensively investigated. The heteroaggregation of cells and M-NPs can hinder substrate transfer or light acquisition. The attraction between Synechocystis sp. and M-NPs increased in the order of SiO 2 < Fe 2 O 3 < Al 2 O 3 ≈ TiO 2 NPs. Therefore, SiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 NPs exerted slight effects on physiology and proteome of Synechocystis sp.. Al 2 O 3 NPs with the rod-like shape caused physical damage to cells. Differently, TiO 2 NPs with photocatalytic activities provided photogenerated electrons for Synechocystis sp., promoting photosynthesis and the Calvin cycle for CO 2 fixation. SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , and Al 2 O 3 NPs alleviated the toxicity of CIP in an adsorption-depended manner. Conversely, the combination of CIP and TiO 2 NPs exerted more pronounced toxic effects compared to their individuals, and CIP disturbed the extracellular electron transfer from TiO 2 NPs to cells. The findings highlight the different effects of TiO 2 NPs from other M-NPs on cyanobacteria, either alone or in combination with CIP, and improve the understanding of toxic mechanisms of M-NPs.

Abstract:The rise in cyanobacterial blooms due to eutrophication and climate change has increased cyanotoxin presence in water. Most current water treatment plants do not effectively remove these toxins, posing a potential risk to public health. This study introduces a water treatment approach using nanostructured beads containing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for easy removal from liquid suspension, coated with different adsorbent materials to eliminate cyanotoxins. Thirteen particle types were produced using activated carbon, CMK-3 mesoporous carbon, graphene, chitosan, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidised cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF), esterified pectin, and calcined lignin as an adsorbent component. The particles' effectiveness for detoxification of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), cylindrospermopsin (CYN), and anatoxin-A (ATX-A) was assessed in an aqueous solution. Two particle compositions presented the best adsorption characteristics for the most common cyanotoxins. In the conditions tested, mesoporous carbon nanostructured particles, P1-CMK3, provide good removal of MC-LR and Merck-activated carbon nanostructured particles, P9-MAC, can remove ATX-A and CYN with high and fair efficacy, respectively. Additionally, in vitro toxicity of water treated with each particle type was evaluated in cultured cell lines, revealing no alteration of viability in human renal, neuronal, hepatic, and intestinal cells. Although further research is needed to fully characterise this new water treatment approach, it appears to be a safe, practical, and effective method for eliminating cyanotoxins from water.

Abstract:Nanoparticles widely exist in nature and may be formed through inorganic or organic pathways, exhibiting unique physical and chemical properties different from those of bulk materials. However, little is known about the potential consequences of nanomaterials on microbes in natural environments. Herein, we investigated the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles by performing experiments on the inhibition effects of gold, ludox and laponite nanoparticles on Escherichia coli in liquid Luria–Bertani (LB) medium at different nanoparticle concentrations. These nanoparticles were shown to be effective bactericides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed the distinct aggregation of cells and nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed considerable cell membrane disruption due to nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces, resulting in cell death. We hypothesized that this nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces not only disrupted the cell membranes but also physically blocked the microbes from accessing nutrients. An iron-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens, was tested for its ability to reduce the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite (HFO) or aqueous ferric citrate in the presence of laponite nanoparticles. It was found that the laponite nanoparticles inhibited the reduction of the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite. Moreover, direct contact between the cells and solid Fe (III) coated with the laponite nanoparticles was physically blocked, as confirmed by SEM images and particle size measurements. However, the laponite particles had an insignificant effect on the extent of aqueous Fe (III) bioreduction but slightly enhanced the rate of bioreduction of the Fe (III) in aqueous ferric citrate. The slightly increased rate of bioreduction by laponite nanoparticles may be due to the removal of inhibitory Fe (II) from the cell surface by its sorption onto the laponite nanoparticle surface. This result indicates that the scavenging of toxic heavy metals, such as Fe (II), by nanoparticles may be beneficial for microbes in the environment. On the other hand, microbial cells are also capable of detoxifying nanoparticles by coagulating nanoparticles with extracellular polymeric substances or by changing nanoparticle morphologies. Hence, the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles in natural environments should receive more attention.

Abstract:Microplastics are potential carriers of harmful contaminants but their combined effects are largely unknown. It needs intensive monitoring in order to achieve a better understanding of metal-oxide nanoparticles and their dispersion via microplastics such as styrofoam in the aquatic environment. In the present study, an effort was made to provide a preferable perception about the toxic effects of engineered nanoparticles (NPs), namely, copper oxide (CuO NPs), nickel oxide (NiO NPs), copper oxide/chitosan (CuO/CS NPs) and nickel oxide/chitosan (NiO/CS NPs). Characterizations of synthesized NPs included their morphology (SEM and EDX), functional groups (FT-IR) and crystallinity (XRD). Their combined toxic effect after adsorption to styrofoam (SF) was monitored using the hydrothermal vent bacterium Jeotgalicoccus huakuii as a model. This was done by determining MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) through a resazurin assay measuring ELISA, growth, biofilm inhibition and making a live and dead assay. Results revealed that at high concentrations (60 mg/10 mL) of CuO, CuO/CS NPs and 60 mg of SF adsorbed CuO and CuO/CS NPs inhibited the growth of J. huakuii . However, NPs rather than SF inhibited the growth of bacteria. The toxicity of NPs adsorbed on plain SF was found to be less compared to NPs alone. This study revealed new dimensions regarding the positive impacts of SF at low concentrations. Synthesized NPs applied separately were found to affect the growth of bacteria substantially more than if coated to SF resin beads.

Complete Degradation and Detoxification of Ciprofloxacin by a Micro-/Nanostructured Biogenic Mn Oxide Composite from a Highly Active Mn2+-Oxidizing Pseudomonas Strain

Abstract:Ciprofloxacin (CIP), as a representative broad-spectrum antibiotic, poses a major threat to human health and the ecological environment as a result of its abuse and emissions. In this study, a highly active Mn2+-oxidizing bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. CCTCC M2014168, was induced to form micro-/nanostructured biogenic Mn oxide (BMO) aggregates through continuous culturing with 1 mmoL−1 Mn2+. Following the characterization of Mn4+ oxides and the micro-/nanostructures by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction assays, the BMO composites were subjected to CIP degradation and detoxification in laboratory trials. High-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) analysis identified that the BMO composites were capable of completely degrading CIP, and HPLC with a mass spectrometer (LC/MS) assays identified three intermediates in the degradation pathway. The reaction temperature, pH and initial ciprofloxacin concentration substantially affected the degradation efficiency of CIP to a certain extent, and the metal ions Mg2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ exerted significant inhibitory effects on CIP degradation. A toxicity test of the degradation products showed that CIP was completely detoxified by degradation. Moreover, the prepared BMO composite exhibited a high capacity for repeated degradation and good performance in continuous degradation cycles, as well as a high capacity to degrade CIP in real natural water.

Abstract:Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are still a problem in biological treatment. Herein, we propose a synergetic strategy between microbes and dual-electric centers catalysts (CCN/Cu-Al 2 O 3 /ceramsite) for Ciprofloxacin (CIP)-contained (5 mg/L) water treatment in an up-flow biological filter. CIP was cleaved into small molecules by the catalyst, bringing a 57.6% removal and reducing 10.5% ARG. The characterization results verified that a Cu-π electrostatic force occurs on the catalyst surface, forming electron-rich areas around Cu and electron-poor areas at the carbon-doped g -C 3 N 4 (CCN) aromatic ring. Thus, the electrons of adsorbed CIP were delocalized and then captured by the adsorbed extracellular polymeric substance at the electron-rich areas. Therefore, the synergetic process weakened the stress of CIP on bacteria and reduced ARG accumulation. It also enriched more electro-active bacteria on the surface of CCN/Cu-Al 2 O 3 /ceramsite, promoting the expression of extracellular electron transfer-related genes and reconstructing the energy metabolism mode. This result provides an opportunity for refractory antibiotic treatment in the biological process.

Effects of dissolved organic matter, pH and nutrient on ciprofloxacin bioaccumulation and toxicity in duckweed

Abstract:Water pollution induced by antibiotics has garnered considerable concern, necessitating urgent and effective removal methods. This study focused on exploring ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal by duckweed and assessing CIP bioaccumulation and toxic effects within duckweed under varying dissolved organic matter categories, pH levels, and nutrient (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)) levels. The results revealed the proficient and rapid elimination of CIP from water by duckweed, resulting in 86.17 % to 92.82 % removal efficiency at the end of the 7-day experiment. Across all exposure groups, varying degrees of CIP bioaccumulation in duckweed were evident, with uptake established as a primary pathway for CIP elimination within this plant. Additionally, five CIP metabolites were identified in duckweed tissues. Interestingly, the presence of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) reduced CIP absorption by duckweed, with FA yielding a more pronounced impact. Optimal CIP removal was recorded at a pH of 7.5, while duckweed displayed heightened physiological stress induced by CIP at pH 8.5. Although the influence of N and P concentrations on CIP removal by duckweed was modest, excessive N and P levels intensified the physiological strain of CIP on duckweed.
Magnetic recyclable carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin/citrate@Fe3O4 photo-nanocomposite beads for ciprofloxacin removal via hybrid adsorption/photocatalysis process under solar light as a renewable energy source

Abstract:Magnetically separable cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin/citrate-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (Cit-Fe3O4) photo-nanocomposite beads (mCMC/Ge) were synthesized and applied in synergistic adsorption/photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (Cipro) pharmaceutical pollutant under sunlight irradiation. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize their structural, textural, magnetic, thermal, and optical properties. The removal efficiency of mCMC/Ge beads was investigated considering different influencing parameters (pH, beads dosage, contact time, Cipro concentration, and temperature). Experimental data modeling indicated that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, with a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity (qm) of 50 mg g-1 for mCMC/Ge, twice that of the matrix. Photocatalytic activity results showed prominent enhancement in Cipro removal using 1 g L-1 of mCMC/Ge at pH 7, as compared to Cit-Fe3O4, reaching 96 %, 85 %, and 63 % after 180 min of adsorption and 120 min of irradiation for initial pollutant concentrations of 10, 20, and 60 mg L-1, respectively. Furthermore, mCMC/Ge demonstrated efficient removal even in real water sample. The excellent removal performance of mCMC/Ge highlighted the synergy between polymeric matrix template and encapsulated Cit-Fe3O4 in improving Cipro adsorption and photodegradation. Furthermore, facile recyclability and sustained activity over five cycles identify mCMC/Ge photo-nanocomposite as a promising material for removing organic pollutants from contaminated waters.
Synthesis and characterization of polysiphonia/cerium oxide/nickel oxide nanocomposites for the removal of toxins from contaminated water and antibacterial potential

Abstract:Due to massive industrial development, organic and inorganic wastes are very common in most industrial effluents from the pharmaceutical industry. Even in low concentrations, they are very dangerous and harmful to humans and other living organisms. Antibiotics are frequently detected in surface waters, in soil, in wastewater from sewage treatment plants, and even in drinking water. The major environmental threat they pose has prompted to search for effective and environmentally friendly means of eliminating these toxins. The biogenic synthesis of nanomaterials using natural herbal extracts has attracted considerable attention due to their low-cost, environmentally friendly and non-toxic nature, and as a reversal of various physical and chemical processes. The ceria nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs), nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs), and CeO 2 /NiO nanocomposites (CeO 2 /NiO NCS) were successfully prepared by simple biosynthetic routes using Polysiphonia urceolata algae extract as green surfactants and tested for toxic ofloxacin removal efficiency. The formed nanostructures were identified and characterized by various microscopic (FESEM-EDX, TEM, XRD, BET, and XPS) and spectroscopic (UV–Vis, FTIR, and TGA) methods. The adsorption/desorption of ofloxacin (OFX) on the surface of the nanomaterials was investigated under optimized conditions (initial dose 20 mg/L, agitation speed 250 rpm, pH 12, adsorbent dose 0.5 mg/L, and contact time 120 min). The removal efficiencies were 78%, 86%, and 94% for CeO 2 NPs, NiO NPs and CeO 2 /NiO NCS, respectively, where OFX removal was found to be spontaneous, followed by Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic reaction model. The OFX adsorption mechanism on the nanomaterials involved the surface complexation via specific electrostatic attraction and H-bonding. The biogenic nanomaterials were also tested for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus . The CeO 2 /NiO NCS exhibited the highest antibacterial activity with zone of inhibition (31.12 ± 0.59 mm) against S. epidermidis , followed by CeO 2 NPs and NiONPs with zones of inhibition (25.53 ± 1.2 mm) and (21.42 ± 0.6 mm) against P. aeruginosa and S. epidermidis , respectively. This study demonstrated the efficiency of the synthesized nanomaterials in removing toxins such as OFX from contaminated water and can serve as potential antibacterial and antioxidant agents. Notably, the heterogeneous nanomaterials demonstrated remarkable stability across a broad pH range, promising reusability and indicated tremendous potential of waste biomass reduction and OFX effluent treatment.

Abstract:The coexistence of antibiotics and heavy metals in wastewater notably influences their adsorption removal behavior. However, the synergistic and antagonistic characteristics and mechanisms of their co-adsorption remain unclear. A novel adsorbent, PVA/PSSNa semi-IPN@Ni foam, was synthesized and applied to study its features and mechanisms in the single and binary systems of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Ni(II). Exceptional removal efficiencies of 95.17 % for CIP and 99.20 % for Ni(II) were achieved. The interactive effects between CIP and Ni(II) were comprehensively explored through adsorption capacity ratio (Rq) and response surface methodology. Mechanistic insights were obtained through NaCl charge shielding experiments, substructure analog molecule probes experiments, theory calculations, as well as FTIR and XPS characterizations. The outcomes suggest that in the single system of CIP, the adsorption mechanisms include electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. In the single system of Ni(II), mechanisms include electrostatic attraction and coordination. In the binary system of CIP + Ni(II), low Ni(II) concentrations facilitate CIP adsorption through coordination and bridging, whereas high Ni(II) concentrations let to competition for adsorption sites. Interestingly, the presence of CIP had minimal impact on Ni(II), exhibiting only a slight synergistic effect. These findings highlight the PVA/PSSNa semi-IPN@Ni foam as a hopeful candidate for removing CIP and Ni(II) from wastewater, and contribute to a deeper comprehension of synergistic and antagonistic mechanisms in the binary system involving CIP and Ni(II).

Abstract:Antibiotic toxicity and antibiotic resistance have become significant challenges to human health. However, the potential ecotoxicity of sediment-associated antibiotics remains unknown. In this study, biochemical responses, histological changes, and behavioral responses of Corbicula fluminea exposed to sediment-associated ciprofloxacin (CIP) were systemically investigated. Special attention was paid to the influence of different substrate types. Biochemical analyses revealed that the balance of the antioxidant system was disrupted, eventually leading to oxidative damage to the gills and digestive gland with increasing CIP concentration. Severe histopathological changes appeared along with the oxidative damage. An enlargement of the tubule lumen and thinning of the epithelium in the digestive gland were observed under exposure to high CIP concentrations (0.5 and 2.5 μg/g CIP). In a behavioral assay, the filtration rate of C. fluminea in high concentration exposure groups was clearly inhibited. Moreover, from the integrated biomarker response (IBR) index, the toxicity response gradients of the digestive gland (no substrate--NOS > Sand > Sand and kaolinite clay-- SKC > Sand, kaolinite clay, and organic matter--SCO) and gills (NOS > SCO > SKC > Sand) were different among substrate exposure groups. The most serious histopathological damage and highest siphoning inhibition were observed in the NOS group. The changes in the morphological structure of digestive gland cells in C. fluminea were similar in the other three substrate groups. The inhibition of the filtration rate in the higher concentration groups decreased in the order Sand > SKC > SCO.

Abstract:Aquatic life is largely affected by the toxic nature of pharmaceutical waste that is released into the environment and affects nature at every level. To preserve nature, it is very important to remove pharmaceutical waste, such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and other antibiotics from nature. In this study, chitosan-graphene-based eco-friendly nano-adsorbent (CS-GO-NPs) was synthesized for the removal of CIP from an aqueous medium using ultrasonic-assisted adsorption. A detailed analysis of process conditions including pH, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperature was performed. Results were found to be significant and more than 94% removal efficiency was achieved using an optimum concentration of 200 mg/L, 5 pH, and adsorption time of 20 min. Further, batch adsorption data was used to study the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior and an isotherm study was performed to determine the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction. Experimental results showed a significant agreement with the theoretical values and more than 0.99 regression coefficient ( R 2 ) values were obtained for pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherm. Further, an adsorption mechanism was also proposed for the CIP-(CS-GO-NPs) system, and found that film diffusion dominates the process, while pore diffusion also plays a vital role in devising an effective eco-friendly adsorbent. The proposed study provides an effective and sustainable route for the management of toxic pharmaceutical wastes using chitosan-graphene-based nano-adsorbent under mild process conditions.
