Abstract:Lexical databases are essential tools for studies on language processing and acquisition. Most previous Chinese lexical databases have focused on materials for adults, yet little is known about reading materials for children and how lexical properties from these materials affect children's reading comprehension. In the present study, we provided the first large database of 2999 Chinese characters and 2182 words collected from the official textbooks recently issued by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China for most elementary schools in Mainland China, as well as norms from both school-aged children and adults. The database incorporates key orthographic, phonological, and semantic factors from these lexical units. A word-naming task was used to investigate the effects of these factors in character and word processing in both adults and children. The results suggest that: (1) as the grade level increases, visual complexity of those characters and words increases whereas semantic richness and frequency decreases; (2) the effects of lexical predictors on processing both characters and words vary across children and adults; (3) the effect of age of acquisition shows different patterns on character and word-naming performance. The Children's Picture Books Lexicon (CPB-LEX): A large-scale lexical database from children's picture books

Abstract:This article presents CPB-LEX, a large-scale database of lexical statistics derived from children's picture books (age range 0-8 years). Such a database is essential for research in psychology, education and computational modelling, where rich details on the vocabulary of early print exposure are required. CPB-LEX was built through an innovative method of computationally extracting lexical information from automatic speech-to-text captions and subtitle tracks generated from social media channels dedicated to reading picture books aloud. It consists of approximately 25,585 types (wordforms) and their frequency norms (raw and Zipf-transformed), a lexicon of bigrams (two-word sequences and their transitional probabilities) and a document-term matrix (which shows the importance of each word in the corpus in each book). Several immediate contributions of CPB-LEX to behavioural science research are reported, including that the new CPB-LEX frequency norms strongly predict age of acquisition and outperform comparable child-input lexical databases. The database allows researchers and practitioners to extract lexical statistics for high-frequency words which can be used to develop word lists. The paper concludes with an investigation of how CPB-LEX can be used to extend recent modelling research on the lexical diversity children receive from picture books in addition to child-directed speech. Our model shows that the vocabulary input from a relatively small number of picture books can dramatically enrich vocabulary exposure from child-directed speech and potentially assist children with vocabulary input deficits. Abstract:Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Ahead of Print. This article introduces the Children and Young People's Books-Lexicon (CYP-LEX), a large-scale lexical database derived from books popular with children and young people in the United Kingdom. CYP-LEX includes 1,200 books evenly distributed across three age bands (7–9, 10–12, 13+) and comprises over 70 million tokens and over 105,000 types. For each word in each age band, we provide its raw and Zipf-transformed frequencies, all parts-of-speech in which it occurs with raw frequency and lemma for each occurrence, and measures of count-based contextual diversity. Together and individually, the three CYP-LEX age bands contain substantially more words than any other publicly available database of books for primary and secondary school children. Most of these words are very low in frequency, and a substantial proportion of the words in each age band do not occur on British television. Although the three age bands share some very frequent words, they differ substantially regarding words that occur less frequently, and this pattern also holds at the level of individual books. Initial analyses of CYP-LEX illustrate why independent reading constitutes a challenge for children and young people, and they also underscore the importance of reading widely for the development of reading expertise. Overall, CYP-LEX provides unprecedented information into the nature of vocabulary in books that British children aged 7+ read, and is a highly valuable resource for those studying reading and language development.

Abstract:Exploring the progression of pronunciation skills in second language (L2) acquisition among children presents an intriguing research avenue. Yet, the comprehension of this process for Uyghur children learning Chinese as their L2 has been constrained by a scarcity of speech data. To bridge this gap, we have developed the UY/CH-CHILD speech database, comprising 29,061 samples of Chinese words articulated by 106 Uyghur children from both kindergartens and primary schools. The database includes carefully labelled syllables and tones by native Chinese speakers. To showcase the utility of this novel resource, we conducted a comparative analysis of pronunciation errors between the kindergarten and primary school groups, unveiling interesting insights into the evolution of pronunciation proficiency in Uyghur children as they mature. Abstract:Currently, much progress has been made in adult facial expressions recognition, but there has been limited attention given to the child facial expression analysis. The lack of publicly available large-scale child facial expression databases has hindered the development of automated coding for child facial expression behaviors. In this study, we aim to address this issue by constructing a new face database for understanding Child Facial Expression in real World (CFEW). The database incorporates three novelties: (1) the largest publicly available child facial expression database (11,000+ images); (2) covering the full developmental range of 0-18-year-old child subjects; (3) rich annotations for facial expression labels, including discrete categories aka happy, neutral, disgust, angry, sad, cry, fear, surprise, sleepy and other facial expressions, intensity of arousal and valence, and several types of facial action units (AUs). In addition, the images in this database capture various challenging real-world conditions, including frontal and non-frontal head poses, facial occlusions, diverse illuminations, and low image resolution. To evaluate the effectiveness of the CFEW database, we conducted extensive baseline experiments using three prominent deep convolutional neural networks: vgg11_bn, ResNet18 and DenseNet121. These experiments encompassed tasks such as discrete facial expression classification, arousal and valence estimation, facial action units detection within the database, and cross-database recognition of seven facial expressions. The Chinese lexicon of deaf readers: A database of character decisions and a comparison between deaf and hearing readers

Abstract:We present a psycholinguistic study investigating lexical effects on simplified Chinese character recognition by deaf readers. Prior research suggests that deaf readers exhibit efficient orthographic processing and decreased reliance on speech-based phonology in word recognition compared to hearing readers. In this large-scale character decision study (25 participants, each evaluating 2500 real characters and 2500 pseudo-characters), we analyzed various factors influencing character recognition accuracy and speed in deaf readers. Deaf participants demonstrated greater accuracy and faster recognition when characters were more frequent, were acquired earlier, had more strokes, displayed higher orthographic complexity, were more imageable in reference, or were less concrete in reference. Comparison with a previous study of hearing readers revealed that the facilitative effect of frequency on character decision accuracy was stronger for deaf readers than hearing readers. The effect of orthographic-phonological regularity differed significantly for the two groups, indicating that deaf readers rely more on orthographic structure and less on phonological information during character recognition. Notably, increased stroke counts (i.e., higher orthographic complexity) hindered hearing readers but facilitated recognition processes in deaf readers, suggesting that deaf readers excel at recognizing characters based on orthographic structure. The database generated from this large-scale character decision study offers a valuable resource for further research and practical applications in deaf education and literacy.

Abstract:This paper contributes to cross-lingual image annotation and retrieval in terms of data and baseline methods. We propose COCO-CN, a novel dataset enriching MS-COCO with manually written Chinese sentences and tags. For more effective annotation acquisition, we develop a recommendation-assisted collective annotation system, automatically providing an annotator with several tags and sentences deemed to be relevant with respect to the pictorial content. Having 20,342 images annotated with 27,218 Chinese sentences and 70,993 tags, COCO-CN is currently the largest Chinese-English dataset that provides a unified and challenging platform for cross-lingual image tagging, captioning and retrieval. We develop conceptually simple yet effective methods per task for learning from cross-lingual resources. Extensive experiments on the three tasks justify the viability of the proposed dataset and methods. Abstract:The increasing availability of numerous corpora has significantly contributed to the understanding of words in terms of their underlying semantic structures and lexical networks (e.g. COBUILD, WordNet etc.). Through data mining and information retrieval, research in this area has vastly expanded our appreciation that what constitutes lexical knowledge goes beyond synonymy, hyponymy, metonymy, meronymy, grammatical and other collocations. Furthermore, they are fundamental to a universalistic conceptual base of ontologies and knowledge representation which are often enriched by deeper and newer analysis. In this context, each language foregrounds specific features or nodes within this knowledge base by usually non-uniform means. At the same time, the arrival of the age of Big Data has attracted extensive studies on the actual and dynamic use of language as contextualized (ala. Jakobson 1960) within a given society, especially through the mass media. What are foregrounded in this medium tend to have graded cognitive saliency characterizing members of the common speech community, and such shared knowledge is usually at great variance with the thesaurus approach and show noticeable localized features. It is proposed here that the two kinds of knowledge (thesauric vs cognitive-cultural) complement each other in human cognition, and are integral to it. We draw on two large Chinese media databases Sketch (2.1 billion character tokens1) and LIVAC (550 million character tokens2) for illustration and discussion. Abstract:Millions of Chinese children learn English at increasingly younger ages. Yet when it comes to measuring proficiency, educators, and researchers rely on assessments that have been developed for L1 learners and/or for different cultural contexts, or on non-validated, individually designed tests. We developed the Assessment of Chinese Children’s English Vocabulary test (ACCE-V) to address the need for a validated, culturally appropriate receptive vocabulary test, designed specifically for young Chinese learners. The items are drawn from current teaching materials used in China, and the depictions of people and objects are culturally appropriate. We evaluated the instrument’s reliability and validity in two field tests with a combined sample size of 1,092 children (181 children for the first field test and 911 children for the second field test, age range from 3.1 to 7.7, mean age: 5.2. Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses show that the ACCE-V is sufficiently sensitive to capture different proficiency levels and that it has good psychometric properties. ACCE-V scores were correlated with Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test scores, indicating concurrent validity. We found that children’s age and English learning experience can significantly predict the scores of ACCE-V, but the effect of English learning experience is greater. The ACCE-V thus offers an alternative to existing vocabulary tests. We argue that culturally appropriate assessments like the ACCE-V are fairer to learners and help promote an English learning and teaching environment that is less dominated by Western cultures and native speaker norms.

Abstract:Learner corpus collects language data produced by L2 learners, that is second or foreign-language learners. This resource is of great relevance for second language acquisition research, foreign-language teaching, and automatic grammatical error correction. However, there is little focus on learner corpus for Chinese as Foreign Language (CFL) learners. Therefore, we propose to construct a large-scale, multidimensional annotated Chinese learner corpus. To construct the corpus, we first obtain a large number of topic-rich texts generated by CFL learners. Then we design an annotation scheme including a sentence acceptability score as well as grammatical error and fluency-based corrections. We build a crowdsourcing platform to perform the annotation effectively (https://yaclc.wenmind.net). We name the corpus YACLC (Yet Another Chinese Learner Corpus) and release it as part of the CUGE benchmark (http://cuge.baai.ac.cn). By analyzing the original sentences and annotations in the corpus, we found that YACLC has a considerable size and very high annotation quality. We hope this corpus can further enhance the studies on Chinese International Education and Chinese automatic grammatical error correction.
An Empirical Study of Chinese Children's Cross-language Phonological Awareness and Word Reading

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between phonological awareness and word/character reading in Chinese and English.It involves 70 first-grade children in Beijing,China,who speak Mandarin as native language and have studied English as foreign language for one year.Four tasks assessing phonological awareness based on onset-sound type and twelve tasks assessing word/character reading ability based on word/character familiarity and regularity are administered in Chinese and English respectively.Confirmatory factor analysis that compares four models showes that a three-factor model fits the data adequately and thus better explaines children's performance in the tests.The three factors were: the ability to estimate pronunciations of UNFAMILIAR word/characters,the ability to read FAMILIAR words/characters,and onset awareness.These results indicate phonological awareness transfer and word/character learning strategy transfer in the process of learning an alphabetic language by students from logographic language background in the beginning level.

Regional Variation of Domain-Specific Lexical Items: Toward a Pan-Chinese Lexical Resource.

Abstract:This paper reports on an initial and necessary step toward the construction of a Pan-Chinese lexical resource. We investigated the regional variation of lexical items in two specific domains, finance and sports; and explored how much of such variation is covered in existing Chinese synonym dictionaries, in particular the Tongyici Cilin. The domain-specific lexical items were obtained from subsections of a synchronous Chinese corpus, LIVAC. Results showed that 20-40% of the words from various subcorpora are unique to the individual communities, and as much as 70% of such unique items are not yet covered in the Tongyici Cilin. The results suggested great potential for building a Pan-Chinese lexical resource for Chinese language processing. Our next step would be to explore automatic means for extracting related lexical items from the corpus, and to incorporate them into existing semantic classifications.
Database of word-level statistics for Mandarin Chinese (DoWLS-MAN)

Abstract:In this article we present the Database of Word-Level Statistics for Mandarin Chinese (DoWLS-MAN). The database addresses the lack of agreement in phonological syllable segmentation specific to Mandarin by offering phonological features for each lexical item according to 16 schematic representations of the syllable (8 with tone and 8 without tone). Those lexical statistics that differ per phonological word and nonword due to changes in syllable segmentation are of the variant category and include subtitle lexical frequency, phonological neighborhood density measures, homophone density, and network science measures. The invariant characteristics consist of each items' lexical tone, phonological transcription, and syllable structure among others. The goal of DoWLS-MAN is to provide researchers both the ability to choose stimuli that are derived from a segmentation schema that supports an existing model of Mandarin speech processing, and the ability to choose stimuli that allow for the testing of hypotheses on phonological segmentation according to multiple schemas. In an exploratory analysis we illustrate how multiple schematic representations of the phonological mental lexicon can aid in hypothesis generation, specifically in terms of phonological processing when reading Chinese orthography. Users of the database can search among over 92,000 words, over 1600 out-of-vocabulary Chinese characters, and 4300 phonological nonwords according to either Chinese orthography, pinyin, or ASCII phonetic script. Users can also generate a list of phonological words and nonwords according to user-defined ranges and categories of lexical characteristics. Linguistic Indicators for Text Complexity in Picture Books for Young Chinese Children Learning English as a Foreign Language

Abstract:We examined the linguistic features of texts in twenty-nine picture books used in an early English as a Foreign Language program in China. We used the software CLAN to automatically extract indices of linguistic complexity that are typically used to analyze child-directed speech and tested if these indices aligned with expert judgments on the books' appropriate grade level (Kindergarten-1 through Kindergarten-3). Of the eleven characteristics investigated, seven showed significant between-level differences with moderate effect sizes. Across all levels, vocabulary complexity (i.e., frequency of types, frequency of tokens, and vocabulary diversity) and syntactic complexity (i.e., number of verbs per utterance, number of Developmental-Sentence-Scoring-eligible utterances, mean length of utterance in morphemes, and total number of non-zero morphemes) increased, also in alignment with experts' judgments. Indices of child language development can thus be used to estimate text complexity in picture books. The study contributes to a better understanding of children's picture book difficulty and has methodological implications for investigating text characteristics for very young children learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract:Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) is a word counting software tool which has been used for quantitative text analysis in many fields. Due to its success and popularity, the core lexicon has been translated into Chinese and many other languages. However, the lexicon only contains several thousand of words, which is deficient compared with the number of common words in Chinese. Current approaches often require manually expanding the lexicon, but it often takes too much time and requires linguistic experts to extend the lexicon. To address this issue, we propose to expand the LIWC lexicon automatically. Specifically, we consider it as a hierarchical classification problem and utilize the Sequence-to-Sequence model to classify words in the lexicon. Moreover, we use the sememe information with the attention mechanism to capture the exact meanings of a word, so that we can expand a more precise and comprehensive lexicon. The experimental results show that our model has a better understanding of word meanings with the help of sememes and achieves significant and consistent improvements compared with the state-of-the-art methods. PreCo: A Large-scale Dataset in Preschool Vocabulary for Coreference Resolution

Abstract:We introduce PreCo, a large-scale English dataset for coreference resolution. The dataset is designed to embody the core challenges in coreference, such as entity representation, by alleviating the challenge of low overlap between training and test sets and enabling separated analysis of mention detection and mention clustering. To strengthen the training-test overlap, we collect a large corpus of about 38K documents and 12.4M words which are mostly from the vocabulary of English-speaking preschoolers. Experiments show that with higher training-test overlap, error analysis on PreCo is more efficient than the one on OntoNotes, a popular existing dataset. Furthermore, we annotate singleton mentions making it possible for the first time to quantify the influence that a mention detector makes on coreference resolution performance. Abstract:AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) is a novel AI technology that encompasses tasks such as text-to-image generation, text-to-text generation, and image-to-text generation. In the process of child language acquisition, some children may face challenges, exhibiting symptoms such as delayed language development, limited vocabulary, and poor expressive ability. To address this issue, the "Look and Speak" method can be employed, which allows children to learn and express language by observing images. In our paper, we build a dataset, named CODP-1200, benchmark for assisting in children language acquisition, which is curated and augmented using AIGC techniques. The dataset consists of 1,200 children cartoon images paired with 6,000 corresponding sentences that are used to describe them. Initially, we carefully curated and selected twelve Chinese language textbooks, ranging from the first to the sixth grade, as part of the primary compulsory education curriculum, to construct the foundational corpus. Based on the original data, two famous large language models ChatGPT and SparkDesk are employed for data augmentation, subsequently. Finally, the ERNIE-ViLG is utilized to generate children's style images corresponding to the textual descriptions. In addition, based on our proposed dataset, we propose a benchmark approach called DDMXCap, which is a diffusion-based model for image captioning, specifically from image to text. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves promising performance in children's image captioning tasks and provides a standardized learning process for child language acquisition. Abstract:This study investigates the effect of sequenced, time-delayed, multimodal Chinese language and communicative literacy supports on the ability of learners of Chinese as a Foreign Language [CFL] to recognize characters and acquire literacy via writing in Chinese. A multimodal web application was designed and developed as a writing platform and supplementary teaching tool—leveraging second language [L2] spoken Chinese understanding and pinyin spelling knowledge to overcome the well documented difficulties faced by CFL students when learning and communicating via Chinese characters. We observed and recorded a communicative writing task carried out on the platform by 14 CFL students and interviewed them upon task completion—also interviewing their instructors. Our findings suggest that designing from a perspective that is pedagogically unique for CFL classrooms afforded new types of interactions and literacy development patterns. Specifically, timed, sequenced, multimodal scaffolds anchored to students' L2 spoken Chinese understanding and pinyin knowledge supported Chinese character recognition, production, and acquisition within communication and expression-centered tasks.
Collection and Analysis on Chinese Cognitive Properties Based on Web Data

Abstract:Cognitive linguistics centers the description of the common cognitive meanings of words.However,to manually collect and describe the cognitive meanings are boring and subjective.In order to overcome the shortcomings of traditional researches,this paper employs the web to collect the cognitive properties of words in HowNet which contains 51020 nouns,27901 verbs and 12252 adjectives.Over 1.2 million records are gained and statistically analyzed.Thus,a cognitive property bank of over 6000 Chinese common words is constructed and tested in automatic generation of exaggerations and ironies.The research has further applications in natural language understanding and generation,language teaching,lexicography,machine translation and other fields.
