Abstract:There are a very few people who have the ability to "see" the surroundings by the echoes, which is called echolocation. The study of the brain mechanism of echolocation can not only help to improve the blind assistance device, but also provides a window into the research of brain's plasticity. In this paper, we developed a wearable system to transform the spatial information captured by camera into a voice description and fed it back to blind users which is inspired by echolocation. After our online virtual scene training, users can easily discriminate object location in the camera's view, motion of the objects, even shape of the objects. Compared with natural echolocation, it's easier to learn and be applied in daily life. In addition, the device achieves high spacial resolution. In this study, two trained blind subjects and two non-trained sighted subjects were tested by using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). We obtain the fMRI images of the subjects' brain activity when they were listening to the sound of the wearable prototype. Intriguingly, we find that after training with the blind assistance system, the blind' visual area of the brain have been activated when they are dealing with the acoustic feedback from the device.
A Low-Vision Navigation Platform for Economies in Transition Countries

Abstract:An ability to move freely, when wanted, is an essential activity for healthy living. Visually impaired and completely blinded persons encounter many disadvantages in their day-to-day activities, including performing work-related tasks. They are at risk of mobility losses, illness, debility, social isolation, and premature mortality. A novel wearable device and computing platform called VIS4ION is reducing the disadvantage gaps and raising living standards for the visually challenged. It provides personal mobility navigational services that serves as a customizable, human-in-the-loop, sensing-to-feedback platform to deliver functional assistance. The platform is configured as a wearable that provides on-board microcomputers, human-machine interfaces, and sensory augmentation. Mobile edge computing enhances functionality as more services are unleashed with the computational gains. The meta-level goal is to support spatial cognition, personal freedom, and activities, and to promoting health and wellbeing. VIS4ION can be conceptualized as the dovetailing of two thrusts: an on-person navigational and computing device and a multimodal functional aid providing microservices through the cloud. The device has on-board wireless capabilities connected through Wi-Fi or 4/5G. The cloud-based microservices reduce hardware and power requirements while allowing existing and new services to be enhanced and added such as loading new map and real-time communication via haptic or audio signals. This technology can be made available and affordable in the economies of transition countries.

Abstract:Vision is extremely important in our lives. The loss of sight is a serious issue for anyone. According to the WHO, one-sixth of the world's population suffers from vision impairment. According to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics published in December 2021, more than 283 million people worldwide suffer from sight problems, including 39 million blind people and 228 million people with low vision. Navigation in unfamiliar environments is a significant challenge for the partially sighted and visually impaired. Improving visual information on object location and content can aid navigation in unfamiliar environments. Many efforts have been made over the years to develop various devices to assist the visually impaired and improve their quality of life. Numerous efforts have been made over the decades to develop gadgets to support the visually impaired as well as enhance the quality of their lives by trying to make them skilled. There are many existing navigation alternatives that can aid these people. However, in practice, navigation alternatives are infrequently adopted and implemented. For universal use, many of these gadgets are either too heavy or too expensive. While emphasizing related strengths and limitations, it is necessary to produce a minimally expensive assistive device for people with visual disabilities. The proposed model provides an efficient solution for VIPs to roam from place to place by themselves through smart applications with AI and sensor technology. The smart application captures and classifies the images. The obstacles are detected through ultrasonic sensors. The user can get a sense of the obstacles in the path through voice command. The proposed model is very helpful for the VIPs in terms of qualitative and quantitative performance measures. This enables a ranking of the evaluated systems according to their potential influence on Visually Impaired people's lives.
[Respiratory signs associated with gastro-esophageal reflux. A retrospective study of 132 surgically treated cases in children and adults].

Abstract:We carried out a retrospective study of 132 cases of respiratory disorders associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux involving 66 children, 42 boys and 24 girls, 4 days to 10 years old with a mean of 22 months. We also studied 66 adults, 37 men and 29 women, 16 to 74 years old. In the infants the mean duration of respiratory disorders was 17 months and a recurrent broncho-pulmonary infection was the principal indication (40 cases). Alimentary symptoms were present in 34 cases. There was evidence of reflux in 60 cases. The suppression of any reflux was obtained surgically in 95% of cases with a disappearance of the respiratory disorders in 78.6% of cases and their improvement in 16.4% of cases with a mean follow up period of 4.3 years. In the adults the mean duration of the respiratory disorders was 9.7 years and asthma was the principal cause (38 cases). Alimentary symptoms were present in 56 cases with evidence of reflux in 64 cases. A suppression of the reflux was achieved surgically in 94% of cases with a disappearance of the respiratory disorders in 36% of cases and their improvement in 28% of cases with a mean follow up period of 4.7 years. The correlation between the disappearance of reflux and the respiratory symptoms and signs in the children should perhaps be tempered by the natural history of the maturation of the inferior oesophageal sphincter. However surgery shortens the danger period in serious situations which are life threatening.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:Objective More than 200 million people are visually impaired or blind worldwide. Artificial vision system has been widely studied for a long time. There are two main technical paths for the research of artificial vision system, the first is implantable artificial vision device, and the second is non-implantable and wearable device. This study demonstrates a non-implantable system prototype based on a wearable touch-vision device designed for the head that can help blind people and visually impaired people complete complex tasks in life such as walking. Methods The image information front of the subjects is collected, and transmitted wirelessly to the operator. After analyzed and processed, it is wirelessly transmitted to wearable devices such as headgears in the form of tactile coding to trigger the multi-point head tactile sensation, thus the subject's information or precise action instructions is obtained. The system also assists the subjects with voice information, allowing them to learn more about road conditions and environmental information. Results 5 healthy volunteers (2 males and 3 females) and 1 young blind person (male) were tested with the prototype. The results show that, the prototype makes full use of the head's natural distinguishing ability for directions including front, back, left and right, and quick response ability to the touch, and the prototype can send clear instructions such as going straight, adjusting to the left or right, and turning. The test showed that the response time of subjects to tactile commands was within 0.5 s, and the mean value of the standard deviation of the deviation of walking for about 7 m is reduced to (16 +/- 10) cm compared with the case without wearing the device. Conclusion Experimental results show that the system can provide environmental image information in a concealed and accurate manner, and help visually impaired people complete daily activities such as walking, avoiding obstacles, going up steps, entering cafes and other public places, fetching objects on the table, which meets expectations of assisting blind people improve their quality of life. In the future, the prototype system will be further improved, especially miniaturization and smart chip. The tactile devices are made into neck rings, belts, bracelets, foot rings, etc., which will be widely used in a variety of work scenarios such as travel assistance for the blind, night field trips, and deep sea diving.

Abstract:This article develops a wearable vision-based assistance system to provide situational awareness for blind and visually impaired (BVI) people in indoor scenarios. The system is built upon nonintrusive wearable devices, including an RGB-D camera, an embedded computer, and haptic modules. First, the depth map and color images of the scene are obtained from an RGB-D camera, which provides 3-D environmental information. The modular work modes are then designed for different tasks, such as navigation and multitarget recognition. Then, the cognition results are summarized and presented to the user through verbal or haptic feedback. Our system is evaluated by a pilot test to validate its effectiveness of improving the navigation capabilities and multitarget recognition capabilities for the BVI in indoor environments. We present study results with different tasks, including navigation, object localization, face recognition, and text reading. The experiments prove that the system can meet the needs of the BVI in daily use.

Abstract:Severe visual impairment and blindness significantly affect a person's quality of life, leading sometimes to social anxiety. Nevertheless, instead of concentrating on a person's inability, we could focus on their capacities and on their other senses, which in many cases are more developed. On the other hand, the technical evolution that we are witnessing is able to provide practical means that can reduce the effects that blindness and severe visual impairment have on a person's life. In this context, this article proposes a novel wearable solution that has the potential to significantly improve blind person's quality of life by providing personal assistance with the help of Visible Light Communications (VLC) technology. To prevent the wearable device from drawing attention and to not further emphasize the user's deficiency, the prototype has been integrated into a smart backpack that has multiple functions, from localization to obstacle detection. To demonstrate the viability of the concept, the prototype has been evaluated in a complex scenario where it is used to receive the location of a certain object and to safely travel towards it. The experimental results have: i. confirmed the prototype's ability to receive data at a Bit-Error Rate (BER) lower than 10-7; ii. established the prototype's ability to provide support for a 3 m radius around a standard 65 × 65 cm luminaire; iii. demonstrated the concept's compatibility with light dimming in the 1-99% interval while maintaining the low BER; and, most importantly, iv. proved that the use of the concept can enable a person to obtain information and guidance, enabling safer and faster way of traveling to a certain unknown location. As far as we know, this work is the first one to report the implementation and the experimental evaluation of such a concept.

Low-Cost Open Source Ultrasound-Sensing Based Navigational Support for the Visually Impaired

Abstract:Nineteen million Americans have significant vision loss. Over 70% of these are not employed full-time, and more than a quarter live below the poverty line. Globally, there are 36 million blind people, but less than half use white canes or more costly commercial sensory substitutions. The quality of life for visually impaired people is hampered by the resultant lack of independence. To help alleviate these challenges this study reports on the development of a low-cost, open-source ultrasound-based navigational support system in the form of a wearable bracelet to allow people with the lost vision to navigate, orient themselves in their surroundings and avoid obstacles when moving. The system can be largely made with digitally distributed manufacturing using low-cost 3-D printing/milling. It conveys point-distance information by utilizing the natural active sensing approach and modulates measurements into haptic feedback with various vibration patterns within the four-meter range. It does not require complex calibrations and training, consists of the small number of available and inexpensive components, and can be used as an independent addition to traditional tools. Sighted blindfolded participants successfully demonstrated the device for nine primary everyday navigation and guidance tasks including indoor and outdoor navigation and avoiding collisions with other pedestrians.

Abstract:As per World Health Organization (WHO), a total of around 2.2 billion of human population in the world has visual problem to severe or minor extent. In this paper, an assistive system is proposed to augment the mobility of such visually impaired people. This system is realized by using a smart clothing approach for wearable convenience of the subject. In this system, five ultrasonic sensors, a web camera and a global positioning receiver (GPS) are integrated on a wearable jacket. This multisensory arrangement is proposed in order to translate human navigation ability into an electronic system. It employs machine learning for reliable detection of obstacles and navigation path. Proposed system also assists in knowing information about current or nearby location, planning a journey from a reference location to a desired destination, and tracking the navigation path to reach the destination. The functional features of this system are resolved based on continual interactions with the visually impaired subjects, their care takers and rehabilitation professionals. The said system was subjected to usability evaluations with ten totally visually impaired subjects. Results of this study showed encouraging improvement in mobility performances of subjects as compared to a white cane alone. Amongst the participated subjects, 80% acknowledged usefulness of the proposed system for attending their mobility needs. Total 60% subjects admitted decrease in cognitive efforts, and 80% acknowledged reduction in perceptual efforts due of this system.

A Novel Three-Dimensional Navigation Method for the Visually Impaired

Abstract:According to the World Health Organization, visual impairment is estimated to affect approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide. The visually impaired must currently rely on navigational aids to replace their sense of sight, like a white cane or GPS (Global Positioning System) based navigation, both of which fail to work well indoors. The white cane cannot be used to determine a user's position within a room, while GPS can often lose connection indoors and does not provide orientation information, making both approaches unsuitable for indoor use. Therefore, this research seeks to develop a 3D-imaging solution that enables contactless navigation through a complex indoor environment. The device can pinpoint a user's position and orientation with 31% less error compared to previous approaches while requiring only 53.1% of the memory, and processing 125% faster. The device can also detect obstacles with 60.2% more accuracy than the previous state-of-the-art models while requiring only 41% of the memory and processing 260% faster. When testing with human participants, the device allows for a 94.5% reduction in collisions with obstacles in the environment and allows for a 48.3% increase in walking speed, showing that my device enables safer and more rapid navigation for the visually impaired. All in all, this research demonstrates a 3D-based navigation system for the visually impaired. The approach can be used by a wide variety of mobile low-power devices, like cell phones, ensuring this research remains accessible to all.
VISTATM: Visual Impairment Subtle Touch AidTM - a range detection and feedback system for sightless navigation

Abstract:We devised a low-tech, low-cost, robust, and minimally obtrusive navigational travelling aid to be paired with and bolster standard white cane use for people with visual impairments. The device combines ultrasonic range detection with proportional vibrational output. The navigational aid was devised using a sensing belt equipped with independent ultrasonic sensors for distance measurements. Sensors were mounted using adjustable mobile clips to allow for user variability. The sensing belt was connected to a stimulation belt affixed to the ribcage. The stimulation belt used vibrating motors with vibration proportional to the distance between the belt wearer and surrounding obstacles sensed by corresponding ultrasonic sensors. The device was validated through preliminary testing on blindfolded, but fully sighted, persons and one blind person (all authors) in navigating a novel environment without supplemental aid. Testing sessions varied from 45 to 90 min. In preliminary tests, the devised ultrasonic-sensor-belt and vibration-actuator-equipped belt combination was capable of informing users of surrounding obstacles in real-time while navigating a hallway with several turns.

Abstract:In the most recent report published by the World Health Organization concerning people with visual disabilities it is highlighted that by the year 2020, worldwide, the number of completely blind people will reach 75 million, while the number of visually impaired (VI) people will rise to 250 million. Within this context, the development of dedicated electronic travel aid (ETA) systems, able to increase the safe displacement of VI people in indoor/outdoor spaces, while providing additional cognition of the environment becomes of outmost importance. This paper introduces a novel wearable assistive device designed to facilitate the autonomous navigation of blind and VI people in highly dynamic urban scenes. The system exploits two independent sources of information: ultrasonic sensors and the video camera embedded in a regular smartphone. The underlying methodology exploits computer vision and machine learning techniques and makes it possible to identify accurately both static and highly dynamic objects existent in a scene, regardless on their location, size or shape. In addition, the proposed system is able to acquire information about the environment, semantically interpret it and alert users about possible dangerous situations through acoustic feedback. To determine the performance of the proposed methodology we have performed an extensive objective and subjective experimental evaluation with the help of 21 VI subjects from two blind associations. The users pointed out that our prototype is highly helpful in increasing the mobility, while being friendly and easy to learn.

Abstract:Assistive devices for visually impaired people (VIP) which support daily traveling and improve social inclusion are developing fast. Most of them try to solve the problem of navigation or obstacle avoidance, and other works focus on helping VIP to recognize their surrounding objects. However, very few of them couple both capabilities (i.e., navigation and recognition). Aiming at the above needs, this paper presents a wearable assistive device that allows VIP to (i) navigate safely and quickly in unfamiliar environment, and (ii) to recognize the objects in both indoor and outdoor environments. The device consists of a consumer Red, Green, Blue and Depth (RGB-D) camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which are mounted on a pair of eyeglasses, and a smartphone. The device leverages the ground height continuity among adjacent image frames to segment the ground accurately and rapidly, and then search the moving direction according to the ground. A lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based object recognition system is developed and deployed on the smartphone to increase the perception ability of VIP and promote the navigation system. It can provide the semantic information of surroundings, such as the categories, locations, and orientations of objects. Human–machine interaction is performed through audio module (a beeping sound for obstacle alert, speech recognition for understanding the user commands, and speech synthesis for expressing semantic information of surroundings). We evaluated the performance of the proposed system through many experiments conducted in both indoor and outdoor scenarios, demonstrating the efficiency and safety of the proposed assistive system.

Abstract:This study explores a VR-based intervention for Visuospatial neglect (VSN), a post-stroke condition. It aims to develop a VR task utilizing interactive visual-audio cues to improve sensory-motor training and assess its impact on VSN patients' engagement and performance. Collaboratively designed with physiotherapists, the VR task uses directional and auditory stimuli to alert and direct patients, tested over 12 sessions with two individuals. Results show a consistent decrease in task completion variability and positive patient feedback, highlighting the VR task's potential for enhancing engagement and suggesting its feasibility in rehabilitation. The study underlines the significance of collaborative design in healthcare technology and advocates for further research with a larger sample size to confirm the benefits of VR in VSN treatment, as well as its applicability to other multimodal disorders.

Using Portable Virtual Reality to Assess Mobility of Blind and Low-Vision Individuals With the Audomni Sensory Supplementation Feedback

Abstract:Numerous electronic travel aids (ETAs) to increase the mobility of blind or low-vision (BLV) individuals have been proposed. However, the lack of established and well-motivated methods, and of recruiting enough BLV test participants, keeps a successful aid illusory. To combat this, a new aid-agnostic questionnaire focused on mobility, the Desire of Use Questionnaire for Mobility of BLV individuals (DoUQ-MoB) and a new portable, large-scale-exploration virtual reality (VR) system, the Parrot-VR, were employed to evaluate the ETA Audomni. Through VR and Audomni, 19 heterogenous BLV participants traversed large-scale urban environments. Their experiences were probed through the DoUQ-MoB, and their movement analyzed. Numerous results are presented, a highlight being that most participants, 76 %, responded that it was very or extremely likely that they would want to use Audomni along with their current aid. Further, Parrot-VR assists in recruiting a satisfying number of diverse BLV participants; and DoUQ-MoB allows to systematically probe their opinions of an aid, and how it relates to others aids, in a considerable quantity of mobility aid aspects. This work illuminates some shortcomings of Audomni, but also shows a majority of BLV participants actually wanting to use a proposed ETA — a result rarely seen so distinctly in the field, and which encourages the continuing efforts of the project. The results are supported by a novel test procedure, which might serve as future inspiration to the field.

NaVIP: An Image-Centric Indoor Navigation Solution for Visually Impaired People

Abstract:Indoor navigation is challenging due to the absence of satellite positioning. This challenge is manifold greater for Visually Impaired People (VIPs) who lack the ability to get information from wayfinding signage. Other sensor signals (e.g., Bluetooth and LiDAR) can be used to create turn-by-turn navigation solutions with position updates for users. Unfortunately, these solutions require tags to be installed all around the environment or the use of fairly expensive hardware. Moreover, these solutions require a high degree of manual involvement that raises costs, thus hampering scalability. We propose an image dataset and associated image-centric solution called NaVIP towards visual intelligence that is infrastructure-free and task-scalable, and can assist VIPs in understanding their surroundings. Specifically, we start by curating large-scale phone camera data in a four-floor research building, with 300K images, to lay the foundation for creating an image-centric indoor navigation and exploration solution for inclusiveness. Every image is labelled with precise 6DoF camera poses, details of indoor PoIs, and descriptive captions to assist VIPs. We benchmark on two main aspects: 1) positioning system and 2) exploration support, prioritizing training scalability and real-time inference, to validate the prospect of image-based solution towards indoor navigation. Abstract:In today's society, where independent living is becoming increasingly important, it can be extremely constricting for those who are blind. Blind and visually impaired (BVI) people face challenges because they need manual support to prompt information about their environment. In this work, we took our first step towards developing an affordable and high-performing eye wearable assistive device, DRISHTI, to provide visual navigation assistance for BVI people. This system comprises a camera module, ESP32 processor, Bluetooth module, smartphone and speakers. Using artificial intelligence, this system is proposed to detect and understand the nature of the users' path and obstacles ahead of the user in that path and then inform BVI users about it via audio output to enable them to acquire directions by themselves on their journey. This first step discussed in this paper involves establishing a proof-of-concept of achieving the right balance of affordability and performance by testing an initial software integration of a currency detection algorithm on a low-cost embedded arrangement. This work will lay the foundation for our upcoming works toward achieving the goal of assisting the maximum of BVI people around the globe in moving independently.

Abstract:Navigating the world as a visually impaired person presents unique challenges, particularly when detecting and avoiding obstacles along with reaching the desired destination. The traditional methods for aiding visually impaired individuals, such as canes or guide dogs, provide limited information about the environment. To address these limitations, we have developed an innovative Obstacle Alert and Assistance System specifically designed for the visually impaired. This device uses Ultrasonic sensors to detect Distance data of the obstacles in the user's path and provide real-time feedback through auditory signals. Along with that we have integrated an HD night vision camera to explain live scenarios based on the real world. Our device utilizes a combination of ultrasonic, camera sensors along with a Smartly trained AI algorithm to accurately identify and brief about potential hazards in various environments, ranging from urban settings to natural landscapes. The device is also equipped with a GPS module to assist with navigation, offering directions and alerts about upcoming obstacles. One of the key advantages of our device is its wearability and ease of use. It is designed to be lightweight and non-intrusive, allowing users to wear it comfortably for extended periods. Furthermore, it connects wirelessly to a smartphone app, enabling users to customize settings according to their preferences and needs. Extensive testing has shown that our device significantly enhances the mobility and safety of visually impaired individuals, allowing them to navigate unfamiliar environments with greater confidence and independence. This research presents a breakthrough in assistive technology for the visually impaired and offers insights into the potential of sensor-based AI systems in enhancing human capabilities. Our device is poised to revolutionize assistive technology, providing a cost-effective, efficient, and user-friendly solution for millions of visually impaired people worldwide. Alongside this device can be helpful for dumb and deaf personals because this can be customized for specific ability people enabling it is more versatile and comfortable.
Large-scale, Longitudinal, Hybrid Participatory Design Program to Create Navigation Technology for the Blind

Abstract:Empowering people who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) to enhance their orientation and mobility skills is critical to equalizing their access to social and economic opportunities. To manage this crucial challenge, we employed a novel design process based on a large-scale, longitudinal, community-based structure. Across three annual programs we engaged with the BVI community in online and in-person modes. In total, our team included 67 total BVI participatory design participants online, 11 BVI co-designers in-person, and 4 BVI program coordinators. Through this design process we built a mobile application that enables users to generate, share, and navigate maps of indoor and outdoor environments without the need to instrument each environment with beacons or fiducial markers. We evaluated this app at a healthcare facility, and participants in the evaluation rated the app highly with respect to its design, features, and potential for positive impact on quality of life.
