Abstract:Triplet excitons can be effectively harvested in organic light-emitting diodes employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules as the emitter and host. A design strategy for blue and green emitters with small S1-T1 splitting (ΔEST) is to construct a donor-acceptor (D-A) type molecule with moieties combining a high T1 level with a strong electron-donating/withdrawing character. Here, we report a new kind of TADF emitter with an indolo[2,3-b]indole (IDID) donor. In comparison to other reported indolocarbazole and indoloindole donors, IDID has a higher T1 level, which is comparable to that of the classical donor 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (DMAC) for blue TADF emitters. The sky-blue and green TADF emitters based on the IDID donor and a phenyltriazine acceptor exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (0.78-0.92) and short TADF lifetimes (1.1-1.7 μs) in doped films. Devices employing these IDID-based emitters offer an external quantum efficiency of 19.2%, which is comparable to that obtained for a device employing an analogous compound with a DMAC donor, while the stability of the former is higher than that of the latter owing to the just-right D-A twisting angles (∼59°) in the IDID-based emitters leading to a balance between ΔEST and the fluorescence rate. The utilization of host materials with a similar polarity to the emitter is found to be an effective strategy to improve device stability.
Expanding the Hole Delocalization Range in Excited Molecules for Stable Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Employing Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

Abstract:Metal-free, thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters have emerged as a promising new generation of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. Donor-acceptor (D-A) structures are widely used in TADF molecular design to ensure a small energy splitting between the singlet and triplet excitons. Here, a series of efficient bluish-green TADF emitters are constructed using one or two phenyltriazine acceptors and one tercarbazole, bicarbazole or indolo[2,3-b]carbazole donor through anortho-linkage. The impact of the D/A ratio on the photoluminescence and electroluminescence stability of these emitters in doped films is thoroughly investigated. According to the two-exciton dynamics and the degradation products, device degradation is deduced to be a result of electrophilic substitution between two charge-transfer excitons. Within a limited molecular weight range, increasing the number of acceptor moieties leads to a decrease in the hole delocalization range in the excited state, which facilitates the substitution reaction. Based on an optimized device structure, the device containing an emitter with bulk a tercarbazole donor achieves a long half-life of 1512 hours with an initial luminescence of 1000 cd m(-2). Our findings reveal a possible mechanism for exciton-exciton and exciton-polaron annihilation-induced device degradation and provide new approaches for achieving stable OLEDs employing TADF.
Approaching Nearly 40% External Quantum Efficiency in Organic Light Emitting Diodes Utilizing a Green Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter with an Extended Linear Donor–Acceptor–Donor Structure

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters featuring preferential horizontal emitting dipole orientation (EDO) are in urgent demand for enhanced optical outcoupling efficiency in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, simultaneously manipulating EDO and optoelectronic properties remains a formidable challenge. Here, an extended linear D–A–D structure with both enlarged donor (D) and acceptor (A) π-systems is established, not only elaborately manipulating parallel horizontal molecular orientation and EDO along its long axis by multi-driving-forces for a high horizontal dipole ratio (Θ//), but also delocalizing distribution of frontier energy levels for optimized electronic properties. The proof-of-the-concept emitter simultaneously affords a high Θ// of 92%, a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 95%, and a fast reverse intersystem crossing rate of 1.16 × 106 s-1. The corresponding OLED achieves a champion maximum external quantum efficiency of 39.1% among all green TADF devices without any external light-extraction techniques, together with a maximum power efficiency of 112.0 lm W-1 and alleviated efficiency roll-off. These findings may inspire even better full-color TADF emitters that push the device efficiency toward the theoretical limits.

Abstract:A series of 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives is synthesized and their electron-transporting/injecting (ET/EI) properties are investigated via a multilayered electrophosphorescent organic light-emitting device (OLED) using fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium [Ir(ppy)3] as a green phosphorescent emitter doped into a 4,4-N,N-dicarbazolebiphenyl (CBP) host with 4,4-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]biphenyl (a-NPD) as the hole-transporting layer, and poly(arylene ether sulfone) containing tetraphenylbenzidine (TPDPES) doped with tris(4-bromophenyl)ammonium hexachloroantimonate (TBPAH) as the hole-injecting layer. The turn-on voltage of the device is 2.5 V using 2,7-bis[3-(2-phenyl)-1,8-naphthyridinyl]-9,9-dimethylfluorene (DNPF), lower than that of 3.0 V for the device using a conventional ET material. The maximum current efficiency (CE) and power efficiency (PE) of the DNPF device are much higher than those of a conventional device. With the aid of a hole-blocking (HB) and exciton-blocking layer of bathocuproine (BCP), 13.213.7% of the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) and a maximum PE of 50.254.5 lm W1 are obtained using the naphthyridine derivatives; these values are comparable with or even higher than the 13.6% for conventional ET material. The naphthyridine derivatives show high thermal stabilities, glass-transition temperatures much higher than that of aluminum(III) bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinato)-4-phenylphenolate (BAlq), and decomposition temperatures of 510518 degrees C, comparable to or even higher than those of Alq3.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.

Abstract:Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are of practical significance for realizing high-performance organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which remains the great challenge for near-infrared (NIR) emitters because of their narrow bandgap worsened non-radiative transition. Herein, a NIR TADF molecule (CNPP-TPA) is reported, composed of 2,3-dicyanopyrazino phenanthroline (CNPP) as acceptor and triphenylamine as donor. The strong electron-withdrawing effect of CNPP and intramolecular hydrogen bond endow CNPP-TPA with efficient NIR photoluminescence emission peaked at 701 nm with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 96.5%, owing to rapid singlet radiation and effective reverse intersystem crossing. Vacuum-evaporated and spin-coated organic light-emitting diodes exhibit the NIR emissions respectively peaked at 684 nm and 700 nm, corresponding to Commission International de L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.68, 0.31) and (0.69, 0.30), respectively. Significantly, these two devices achieved the state-of-the-art external quantum efficiencies of 8.69% and 2.02%.

Abstract:Highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules are in urgent demand for solid-state lighting and full-color displays. Here, the design and synthesis of three triarylamine-pyridine-carbonitrile-based TADF compounds, TPAPPC, TPAmPPC, and tTPAmPPC, are shown. They exhibit excellent photoluminescence quantum yields of 79−100% with small ΔEST values, fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), and high horizontal dipole ratios (Θ// = 86−88%) in the thin films leading to the enhancement of device light outcoupling. Consequently, a green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on TPAmPPC shows a high average external quantum efficiency of 38.8 ± 0.6%, a current efficiency of 130.1 ± 2.1 cd A–1, and a power efficiency of 136.3 ± 2.2 lm W–1. The highest device efficiency of 39.8% appears to be record-breaking among TADF-based OLEDs to date. In addition, the TPAmPPC-based device shows superior operation lifetime and high-temperature resistance. It is worth noting that the TPA-PPC-based materials have excellent optical properties and the potential for making them strong candidates for TADF practical application.

Abstract:The connection of an electron deficient 1,8-naphthalimide acceptor moiety with a phenoxazine or phenothiazine donor moiety afforded 6-(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (PXZ-NAI) and 6-(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (PTZ-NAI) as two novel red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The two emitters exhibited distinct TADF characteristics with small energy gaps between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states, which originated from the well-separated highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital distributions. The optimized TADF organic light-emitting diodes based on PXZ-NAI and PTZ-NAI offered maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 13.0% and 11.4% with maximum power efficiencies of 14.8 and 9.8 lm/W, respectively. Both devices emitted red electroluminescence spectra with peaks at 624 and 632 nm, and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.610, 0.388) and (0.630, 0.368), respectively. These findings demonstrate that the combination of 1,8-naphthalimide with phenoxazine or phenothiazine could be an effective pathway for developing red TADF emitters.

Abstract:A rational molecular design strategy for developing efficient thermally‐activated delayed fluorescence materials is presented through the additional introduction of donor (D) or acceptor (A) units in D‐A framework, enabling the corresponding organic light‐emitting diodes with external quantum efficiency enhanced from 8.5% to 11.6% and up to 27.5%, respectively, due to improved photophysical and horizontal dipole ratio properties. Thermally‐activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are usually constructed with twisted donor‐acceptor (D‐A) frameworks, while studies on the relationship between diverse D‐A structures are still in high demand to achieve high‐performance emitters. Herein, by adopting triphenylamine as electron donor and dibenzo[a,c]phenazine as electron acceptor, three TADF molecules are reported with different frameworks of D‐A (TPZ), D‐A‐D (DPZ) and D‐A‐A (APZ). Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that different D‐A frameworks play significant effects on photophysical, horizontal dipole ratio, and electroluminescence properties of the TADF molecules. In comparison, the APZ‐OLED device achieves the best performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 27.5%, resulting from its low energy gap between the singlet and triplet, effective reverse intersystem crossing, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and horizontal dipole ratio. This work provides an insight into the relationship between efficient TADF emitters and rational molecular design engineering.

Abstract:It is an immense challenge to develop efficient long-wavelength (orange-to-red) thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials due to the increasing nonradiative decay rates following the energy-gap law. Herein, two pairs of asymmetric isomers; DPyPzTPA and TPAPzDPy, and PyPzDTPA and DTPAPzPy based on electron-deficient moieties dibenzo[ a,c ]phenazine (Pz) and pyridine (Py) combined with electron-donor units of triphenylamine (TPA) were designed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties could be finely modulated by changing the position and number of Py groups as well as TPA fragments onto Pz cores. DPyPzTPA and DTPAPzPy possess much more rigidity and thus less geometry relaxation and non-radiative decay between ground states and excited states than those of PyPzDTPA and TPAPzDPy. Intriguingly, DPyPzTPA exhibits the highest relative photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ PL ) and the fastest reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) rate among them owing to relatively stronger rigidity and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions between the lowest singlet (S 1 ) and energetically close-lying excited triplet state and therefore, the device showed the highest maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 16.6% (60.9 lm/W, 53.3 cd/A) with Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.43, 0.55), peak wavelength 556 nm. In stark contrast, due to its lower rigidity and extremely weak delayed fluorescence (DF) characteristic and thus the much lower Φ PL , TPAPzDPy-based devices are only half as efficient (30.8 lm/W, 27.5 cd/A, 8.3% EQE) despite the isomers possessing equal singlet-triplet energy gaps (Δ E ST ) of 0.43 eV. On the other hand, the device based on DTPAPzPy also demonstrated a strongly enhanced performance (59.1 lm/W, 52.7 cd/A, 16.1% EQE) than its isomer PyPzDTPA-based device (39.5 lm/W, 35.2 cd/A, 10.3% EQE). This work explicitly implicates that the asymmetric and isomeric molecular design is a potential strategy for promoting the development of highly efficient long-wavelength TADF materials.

Abstract:Organic fluorescent materials possessing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics have attracted tremendous attention. Herein, two TADF emitters (1PXZP and 2PXZP) based on a novel biological base acceptor of 9-methylpurine and commonly used donor of phenoxazine (PXZ) have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Both target compounds possess nearly orthogonal configurations to reduce singlet-triplet splitting energy (ΔE ST) for remarkable TADF character. The two emitters show good photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), and thus the organic light-emitting diodes employing 1PXZP and 2PXZP as emitters display good performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 10.6% and 13.8%, respectively. The efficiencies of 1PXZP based device show nearly no roll-off at 100 cd m−2 luminance due to the short delayed lifetime (τ d) of 3.2 μs. This work manifests that the biological base is a promising acceptor for designing TADF materials.

A sterically hindered asymmetric D-A-D' thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitter for highly efficient non-doped organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have opened a new chapter for high-efficiency and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Herein, we describe a novel and effective design strategy for TADF emitters which includes introducing a carbazole donor unit at the ortho-position, at which the donor and acceptor groups are spatially in close proximity to guarantee the existence of intramolecular electrostatic attraction and through-space charge transfer, leading to reduced structural vibrations, suppressed non-radiative decay and rapid radiative decay to avoid excited state energy loss. As a result, a green TADF emitter (2Cz-DPS) showing high solid-state photoluminescence quantum efficiency (91.9%) and excellent OLED performance was produced. Theoretical simulations reveal that the non-adiabatic coupling accelerates the reverse intersystem crossing of 2Cz-DPS, resulting in a state-of-the-art non-doped OLED with an extremely high external quantum efficiency of 28.7%.
Novel Deuterated Benzothiadiazole Derivatives with Enhancing High-Lying Reverse Intersystem Crossing for High-Efficiency Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Developing efficient “hot exciton” thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials in electroluminescence has always been a significant and challenging issue. Herein, we have designed and synthesized two deuterated yellow emitters BT-2PhCz-d10 and BT-2PhCz-d24 based on the commonly designed hot exciton emitter BT-2PhCz to improve the exciton utilization efficiency. Transient absorption (TA) kinetic analysis showed that deuterated BT-2PhCz-d10 and BT-2PhCz-d24 possessed shorter delayed lifetimes and a faster high-lying reverse intersystem crossing rate constant (k h‑RISC) than BT-2PhCz. The measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and infrared spectrum results also experimentally confirmed that the introduction of C–D bonds played a key role in suppressing nonradiative processes. The optimized organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these hot exciton materials exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1% for BT-2PhCz, 10.0% for BT-2PhCz-d10, and 11.8% for BT-2PhCz-d24, respectively, corresponding to exciton utilization efficiencies of 39.3–26.2, 50.0–33.3, and 59.4–39.6%. These results confirm that the deuterated isotope effect realized the regulation of high-energy spin flip processes and nonradiative decay processes, providing a new strategy for designing high-performance hot exciton emitters.

Highly Efficient Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters with a Triphenylamine‐Based Macrocyclic Donor

Abstract:A triarylamine‐based macrocyclic donor is adopted to design new blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter. The restricted conformation of macrocyclic donor twisting against the dimethyl substituted phenylene bridge leads to the reduced singlet–triplet energy difference (ΔEST) as well as the enhanced horizontal ratio of emission dipole. These beneficial effects contribute to a highly efficient blue TADF organic light‐emitting diode. This work reports the incorporation of a triphenylamine‐based macrocyclic donor to design new donor‐π‐acceptor‐configured blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The X‐ray structure analyses manifest the degree of twisted conformations that can be modulated by methyl substituents of the π‐bridge and macrocyclic donor, leading to well‐separated highest occupied natural transition orbital and lowest unoccupied natural transition orbital frontier orbitals, thus sufficiently small singlet–triplet energy difference (ΔEST) for TADF. The theoretical analyses elucidate the structure–property relationship and reveal the beneficial effect of macrocyclic donor on increasing reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process that can contribute to improved triplet‐upconversion efficiency. The blue device employing c‐NN‐TRZ as emitter gave a maximum external quantum efficiecny (EQEmax) of 26.3% as compared to that (19.1%) of the device using the model compound DPA‐MeTRZ without the macrocyclic donor, suggesting the contribution of macrocyclic donor to enhance device performance. Benefiting from the combined advantages of macrocyclic donor and methyl substituents, the device incorporating c‐NN‐MeTRZ as emitter achieves an outstanding EQEmax of 32.2%, which is attributed to the more horizontally oriented emission dipoles as well as the significantly accelerated RISC rate constant (kRISC) resulting from reduced ΔEST. Highly Efficient Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Via J‐Aggregates with Strong Intermolecular Charge Transfer

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency and low-cost organic emissive materials and devices is intrinsically limited by the energy-gap law and spin statistics, especially in the near-infrared (NIR) region. A novel design strategy is reported for realizing highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials via J-aggregates with strong intermolecular charge transfer (CT). Two organic donor-acceptor molecules with strong and planar acceptor are designed and synthesized, which can readily form J-aggregates with strong intermolecular CT in solid states and exhibit wide-tuning emissions from yellow to NIR. Experimental and theoretical investigations expose that the formation of such J-aggregates mixes Frenkel excitons and CT excitons, which not only contributes to a fast radiative decay rate and a slow nonradiative decay rate for achieving nearly unity photoluminescence efficiency in solid films, but significantly decreases the energy gap between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (≈0.3 eV) to induce high-efficiency TADF even in the NIR region. These organic light-emitting diodes exhibit external quantum efficiencies of 15.8% for red emission and 14.1% for NIR emission, which represent the best result for NIR organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on TADF materials. These findings open a new avenue for the development of high-efficiency organic emissive materials and devices based on molecular aggregates.
Modulating the acceptor structure of dicyanopyridine based TADF emitters: Nearly 30% external quantum efficiency and suppression on efficiency roll-off in OLED

Abstract:As the blooming of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) possessing high external quantum efficiency (EQE) and low efficiency roll-off are under eager pursuit. Herein, three molecules, 4-(4-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10(9H)-yl)phenyl)-2,6-diphenylpyridine-3,5-dicarbonitrile (Ph-DMAC), 4-(4-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10(9H)-yl)phenyl)-2,6-di(naphthalen-1-yl)pyridine-3,5-dicarbonitrile (Na-DMAC) and 4′-(4-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10(9H)-yl)phenyl)-[3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine]-3′,5′-dicarbonitrile (3Py-DMAC) with a twisted donor–acceptor structure comprising 3,5-dicynanopryidine with different 2,6-substutents as acceptor and 9,10-dimethylacridan as donor were designed and synthesized. With the highly twisted conformations, effective TADF is achieved in these molecules. Ph-DMAC delivers a high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 89% ascribed to its rigid acceptor geometry. Na-DMAC and 3Py-DMAC suffer a slight decrease in efficiency due to excess vibration induced by their naphthyl and pyridinyl moieties. A Ph-DMAC based OLED achieves a very high maximum EQE of 29.1% due to its high PLQY and efficient TADF. With a relatively short delayed lifetime, 3Py-DMAC based OLEDs show only mild efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:A sandwich‐type structure of intramolecular frustrated Lewis pairs consisting of rigid and (quasi)planar N‐centered donor and B‐centered acceptors has been developed as high‐efficiency thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters with balanced color purity and delayed fluorescence lifetime. Organic light‐emitting diode with maximum external quantum efficiency of ≈35% has been achieved. Purely organic compounds with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are promising sustainable emitters for organic light‐emitting diodes. But the simultaneous realization of a high efficiency, short lifetime, and good color purity in single TADF molecule remains challenging. Herein it is reported that the confinement of rigid and planar N‐ and B‐centered donor and acceptor in sandwich‐type structures, named BNB‐m and BNB‐p, can lead to green TADF emissions with up to unity efficiency and improved color purity from through‐space charge‐transfer excited states. The full width at half maximum of 58 nm (0.28 eV) for BNB‐m is significantly smaller than those for most of the TADF emitters having a twisted donor‐acceptor structure. Single‐crystal structures, NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical simulations manifest the presence of strong noncovalent π‐stacking interactions in BNB‐m which account for the reduced intramolecular motions and enhanced through‐space electronic coupling. With a relatively short delayed fluorescence lifetime of 11 μs, the emitter BNB‐m demonstrates attractive green electroluminescence with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 34.9% and an EQE of 27.4% at 1000 cd m−2. This work validates a promising molecular design to TADF emitters which can realize a balanced emission property in terms of color purity and emission lifetime.

Abstract:Two thermally‐activated delayed fluorescence materials with ultra‐high horizontal dipole orientation ratios of 92% and 96% are constructed without bathochromic emission shift via a non‐conjugated extension strategy, and when applied to OLED devices, outstanding electroluminescent performances with maximum external quantum efficiency values of 22.1% and 20.9% in non‐doped devices, 37.4% and 34.2% in doped devices are achieved, respectively. In recent years, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with high horizontal dipole ratios (Θ//) have attracted enormous attention in constructing high‐efficiency organic light–emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the common strategy to improve Θ// based on extending π‐conjugation tends to induce bathochromic emission shift, and emitters with Θ// exceeding 90% are rarely reported. Herein, a non‐conjugated extension strategy is developed to promote molecular horizontal dipole orientation. By simply modifying the spiro‐acridine with extra 9‐phenylcarbazole groups, two high‐efficiency and versatile TADF emitters 36DPCZSFAC‐TRZ and 36DPCZSFAC‐PYPM are constructed without bathochromic emission shift, and state‐of‐the‐art ultra‐high Θ// of 92% and 96% are achieved, respectively. More fascinatingly, due to the special spiro molecular structures, the TADF emitters hold distinguished merits of aggregation‐induced emission property, near unitary photoluminescence quantum yields, fast reverse intersystem crossing rates, and enhanced charge‐carrier transport property, which enable outstanding external quantum efficiency values of up to 22.1/20.9% and 37.4/34.2% in non‐doped/doped OLEDs for 36DPCZSFAC‐TRZ and 36DPCZSFAC‐PYPM, respectively, demonstrating their great potentials in the fabrication of high‐efficiency OLEDs.

Abstract:Efficient red emitters are crucial to the widespread use of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in future display and lighting technologies. However, the highly planar configurations of red TADF emitters lead to intermolecular-interaction-induced quenching. To obtain highly efficient doping-insensitive red emitter, a novel asymmetric red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, TPA-AQ-DCP, was developed using an asymmetric donor-acceptor-host (D-A-H) structure. The material consists of anthraquinone as the acceptor, triphenylamine as the donor, and 1,4-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene (DCP) serving as part of the emitter with host material properties. It is demonstrated that incorporating the host group into the TADF emitter with asymmetrical structure improves electron and hole transport within the emitter, effectively reducing concentration quenching. As a consequence, the asymmetric D-A-H structured TPA-AQ-DCP exhibited relatively high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 79.2% and fast radiative rate constant (kr) of 6.60 × 107 s–1, and thus better EL performance. Consequently, efficient external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.76-17.60% with emission peak of 610-620 nm were achieved for TPA-AQ-DCP-based devices with doping ratios ranging from 5 wt% to 25 wt%.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted much attention as they can achieve 100% theoretical internal quantum efficiency without using expensive noble metals. However, efficient red TADF emitters are hard to realize according to the energy gap law. Here, three donor-acceptor-donor type TADF emitters with the same acceptor of o-phthalodinitrile (PN) but different donors (9, 9-dimethyl-9, 10-dihydroacridine (DMAC), phenoxazine (PXZ), and phenothiazine (PTZ) for DMAC-PN, PXZ-PN, and PTZ-PN, respectively) have been synthesized, and it is observed that the performance of the emitters can be improved by reducing the intra-molecular p-p stacking. DMAC-PN with reduced intramolecular p-p stacking shows a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 20.2% in degassed toluene solution, much higher than those of PXZ-PN, and PTZ-PN (0.8%, 0.2%, respectively). An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) employing DMAC-PN doped into 4,4'bis( 9H-carbazol-9-yl) biphenyl (CBP) as the emitting layer exhibits a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.2% with the emission peak at 564 nm. Moreover, when DMAC-PN is doped into a polar host, bis[2-(diphenylphosphino) phenyl] ether oxide (DPEPO), the OLED shows a large redshift of the emission maximum to 594 nm, while maintaining a peak EQE as high as 7.2%, indicating that efficient red TADF OLEDs can be fabricated by doping orange TADF emitters into hosts with proper polarity.
