Abstract:Vibration signals collected after propagation are usually different from the real ones of some vibration source due to the corresponding stop band of a particular propagation media. Here, the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave are investigated when the signals pass through a multi-step rod with variable cross-section. Firstly, the transfer matrices for a single rod are derived based on the three wave theories, i.e. the elementary wave theory, the Love wave theory and the Mindlin-Herrmann wave theory, respectively. Next, the matching conditions for any two adjacent segments are analyzed, from which the transfer matrix for any step-rod with two or more segments are presented. Moreover, possible elastic constraint is also taken into consideration. Finally, several numerical examples for a step-rod with three segments are given by the present theoretical predictions and the finite element analysis, from which the performance of the three wave theories are compared with each other. The results show that the influences of the Poisson's effect and shear deformation cannot be neglected, and the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave in this multi-step rod may also be affected by the magnitude and location of the elastic constraint as well as the discontinuity of the cross-sections of adjacent segments.

Abstract:Vibration data are required for condition monitoring in machinery, and can only be collected indirectly after transferring through rods, shells, rotating shafts or other components in many engineering applications. Investigation on the transfer characteristics of vibration in these components is very helpful to guarantee the efficiency of the data collected indirectly. Here, the longitudinal wave propagation in a rod with variable cross-section is investigated. First, the equations of motion are established for the rod based upon the elementary wave theory, the Love theory and the Mindlin–Herrmann theory. Second, the transfer matrix method is employed to explore the propagation characteristics of the rod from the derived equations of motion. Finally, two kinds of rods with the cross-sections varying in the exponential and the polynomial forms are used to illustrate the analytical predictions of the propagation characteristics of the longitudinal wave, which are compared with the results from the finite element analysis (FEA) method. It is shown that Poisson's effect or the shear deformation plays a very important role in the longitudinal wave propagation in the rod and can widen the rod's stop band moderately. Moreover, the cut-off frequency of the rod is unconcerned with the variation form of the cross-section, but dependent on the area ratio between both the ends of the rod, even though Poisson's effect or shear deformation is included.

Abstract:Non-stationary longitudinal vibrations of a moment elastic rod of finite length are investigated. To describe the motion of the rod, the system of equations of the general model of moment elastic thin bodies is used without additional hypotheses. The equations of this model take into account longitudinal movements, changes in the angle of independent microrotation, as well as transverse compression of the rod. The rod material is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. The system of equations of motion is supplemented by physical relations that describe the relationship of displacements, changes in angles and transverse compression with forces. In contrast to classical models, in addition to normal forces, additional force factors arise in a moment rod. They are: additional moments, moment cutting forces, moments of moment stresses. Accordingly, in addition to the elastic constants of the material, additional physical parameters of the medium are taken into account, which are necessary when taking into account moment effects in the material. The conditions of generalized hinged support are used as boundary conditions at the ends of the rod. The initial conditions are assumed to be zero. To construct the solution, expansions of the desired functions and the external load into trigonometric Fourier series are used. Substituting these expansions into the original relations leads to a system of equations for the coefficients of time-dependent series. To solve it, the integral Laplace transform a in time is used. As a result, expressions for the required coefficients of expansion series in the image space are found. Each of these expressions is the sum of three products. The factors in these products are the Laplace images of the coefficients of the Fourier expansions for the load and for the influence functions. Influence functions are fundamental solutions (Green's functions) of the problem under study. The original coefficients of the series for the influence functions are found analytically using residues. The final expressions for the coefficients of the expansion series of solutions have the form of convolutions in time. The cores of these integral representations are the original coefficients of the series for the influence functions. As an example, the response of a moment elastic rod to the action of a non-stationary axial load is considered. The results obtained are illustrated graphically. The practical convergence of expansion series is estimated.

Abstract:Verifiication experiment was taken to investigate the effects caused by physical dimension and material attributes of a multi‐step rod with variable cross‐section on the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave . An experimental system was built based on previous theoretical studies , and experimental analysis was taken combined with the correlated conditions of those studies . A good agreement between the experimental results and the previous theoretical prediction results was obtained . There are many stop bands and pass bands for a multi‐step rod with variable cross‐section .Multi‐step rod show s the characteristics of band‐pass filter . It cannot be ignored that Poisson ’ s ratio and shear deformation has an effcet on the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave . In addition , the discontinuity degree of cross‐section area of adjoining plane between different rods also affects the wave ’s propagation characteristics .The conclusions can provide condition monitoring with a rule to verify the validity of the signals measured indiretly .

Abstract:Linear viscoelasticity offers a minimal framework within which to construct a causal model for wave propagation in absorptive media. Viscoelastic media are often described as media with 'fading memory,' that is, the present state of stress is dependent on the present strain and the complete time history of strain convolved with appropriate time-dependent shear and bulk stress relaxation moduli. An axisymmetric, displacement-based finite element method for modeling pulsed ultrasonic waves in linear, homogeneous, and isotropic (LHI) viscoelastic media is developed that does not require storage of the complete time history of displacement at every node. This is accomplished by modeling stress relaxation moduli as discrete or continuous spectra of decaying exponentials and relaxation times. Details of the construction and computation of the time-dependent stiffness matrix are presented. As an application of the finite element method, a finite number of exponentials (amplitudes and relaxation times) are employed to represent a typical model for a continuous relaxation spectrum. It is demonstrated that a small number of discrete exponentials are required to model ultrasonic wave propagation of a typical band-limited pulse in a model material accurately. Previous work has shown this model to be consistent with other analytic models for wave propagation in viscoelastic media [1].

Abstract:Unlike impacting a rigid substrate, a rod impacting a flexible plate generates additional dissipation in the bending wave propagating through the plate. In this paper, we present an theoretical model to study the vertical impact of a slender elastoplastic rod impacting a large flexible plate. The longitudinal vibration of the rod is described by the one-dimensional wave equation, and the vibration of the impacted plate is described by the Zener governing equation. An equivalent spring model is used to describe the plastic contact between the elastoplastic hemispherical end and the plate, thus relating the dynamics of the rod and the plate. Laplace transform is used to solve the coupled equations, and the theoretical solution in Laplace space is obtained. The displacement and velocity histories along the rod and the motion of the plate predicted by the theoretical model agree well with the corresponding finite element simulations. In addition, the proposed theoretical model is also applicable when the substrate turns rigid.

Abstract:The influences of the physical meaning and model parameters of the Rayleigh damping model on the dynamic response were analyzed.The mass-related and stiffness-related items of Rayleigh damping model were derived based on the virtual work equation.The vibration response of one-dimensional viscoelastic rod with different Rayleigh damping coefficient was analyzed comparatively via analytical and numerical methods.The energy dissipation phenomenon caused by external environments can be reflected by mass-related section, while material''s blocking effects on dynamic response can be reflected by stiffness-related item.The blocking effects mentioned above indicate that strain rate should be included in stress calculation except the strain item.Analytical and numerical methods were employed to analyze the vibration response of one-dimensional viscoelasticity.The comparison results show that numerical solutions differ with analytical ones in stress calculation, and the former without considering the contribution of strain rate to stress calculation can''t meet the force boundary condition.The errors of stress calculated by the finite element method increase with the rise of Rayleigh damping coefficient and the exciting frequency.

Abstract:The wave propagation in an impacting rod is instant and nearly discontinuous, which remains a challenging problem for both dynamic modeling and experimental test. This paper presents an Enriched Finite Element Method (Enriched FEM) with controllable dispersion error to accurately and efficiently model the discontinuous wave propagation. The Enriched FEM approximates the displacement solutions based on a linear interpolation enriched with a series of harmonic functions. The paper focuses on the dispersion error of the enriched finite element from spatial-temporal discretization and the sampling theorem of the enriched finite element with different cutoff numbers, and then gives a simple quantitative criterion on the interdependent relationship between the size of mesh and time step so as to reduce the numerical dispersion error. In addition, the paper presents the experimental study on the wave propagation of an elastic rod colliding with a rigid wall. The experimental results explicitly show the incidence and reflection of the stress wave in the rod in the contact duration. They also indicate that the amplitude of the strain almost does not decay with the wave propagation along the rod. The numerical results based on the Hertzian contact model are in good agreement with the experimental observations, especially at wave interfaces.

Abstract:This theoretical study of the effect of viscoelastic material properties of a pipe conveying one-dimensional, non-stationary flow shows that, in addition to exponential attenuation of wave fronts, the disturbance is transformed into a diffusion front whose thickness increases as √t, and which propagates at a velocity corresponding to the retarded elasticity of the pipe material [E(∞)]. The behaviour of pressure disturbances in the special case of water-hammer resulting from sudden closure of a valve is illustrated by a numerical application based on the characteristics method. For a pipe of finite length L fed from a constant-level tank, a damped oscillation of period 2L/ā is observed, corresponding to a pseudo-velocity of propagation ā which is calculated on the assumption that deformations associated with relaxation times smaller than 2L/a 0 are instantaneous, where a 0is the true elastic wave celerity (a 0>ā).

Abstract:In this research, the mechanism of energy dissipation in viscoelastic materials is presented by extracting time-dependent displacement and stress–strain distribution analysis in a beam, which contains a viscoelastic part. The structure is discretized into finite beam elements, the kinematic theory of which is based on Carrera unified formulation using Lagrange expansion on the cross section. For the viscoelastic contribution, the integral form of viscoelastic constitutive law in which the stress is related to the integral form of the viscous module and the strain rate is executed. The governing equations of the finite element model of the structure are derived using Hamilton’s principle, and to avoid the computational cost of convolution integral, we have exploited the Laplace transform to the three-dimensional displacement, stress, and strain fields. Finally, the results are transformed to the time domain using numerical inversion methods. A numerical model that has been validated with the results in the literature is considered. To highlight the depreciating consequence of the viscoelastic material, simulation of the multi-layered beam that is isotropic and elastic in all parts except for a certain part that contains the viscoelastic contribution is undertaken, and the temporal response and the stress–strain fields are extracted and discussed. As a result, extreme variations in stress distribution in the location of viscoelastic contributions, hysteresis stress–strain, and changes in beam temporal history to viscoelastic contribution displacement have been observed.

Abstract:This paper presents an effective numerical method for solving elastic wave propagation problems in an infinite Timoshenko beam on viscoelastic foundation in time domain. In order to use the finite element method to model the local complicated material properties of the infinite beam as well as foundation, two artificial boundaries are needed in the infinite system so as to truncate the infinite beam into a finite beam. This treatment requires an appropriate boundary condition derived and applied on the corresponding truncated boundaries. For this purpose, the time-dependent equilibrium equation of motion for beam is changed into a linear ordinary differential equation by using the operator splitting and the residual radiation methods. Simultaneously, an artificial parameter is employed in the derivation. As a result, the high-order accurate artificial boundary condition, which is local in time, is obtained by solving the ordinary differential equation. The numerical examples given in this paper demonstrate that the proposed method is of high accuracy in dealing with elastic wave propagation problems in an infinite foundation beam.
Nonlinear waves in solids with slow dynamics: an internal-variable model

Abstract:In heterogeneous solids such as rocks and concrete, the speed of sound diminishes with the strain amplitude of a dynamic loading (softening). This decrease known as "slow dynamics" occurs at time scales larger than the period of the forcing. Also, hysteresis is observed in the steady-state response. The phenomenological model by Vakhnenko et al. is based on a variable that describes the softening of the material [Phys. Rev. E 70-1, 2004]. However, this model is 1D and it is not thermodynamically admissible. In the present article, a 3D model is derived in the framework of the finite strain theory. An internal variable that describes the softening of the material is introduced, as well as an expression of the specific internal energy. A mechanical constitu-tive law is deduced from the Clausius-Duhem inequality. Moreover, a family of evolution equations for the internal variable is proposed. Here, an evolution equation with one relaxation time is chosen. By construction, this new model of continuum is thermodynamically admissible and dissipative (inelas-tic). In the case of small uniaxial deformations, it is shown analytically that the model reproduces qualitatively the main features of real experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, by methods of symmetry analysis, we study a model of longitudinal dynamic deformation of a viscoelastic rod with a power-law dependence of stress on strain and strain rate. Symmetry analysis of the models of physics and continuum mechanics is one of the most effective ways to obtain quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the physical processes. Model under study is given by a nonlinear differential equation with partial derivatives of the third order. The main Lie group of transformations of this equation is found. For this equation, a formula for the production of new solutions is obtained and all invariant submodels are found. For all these invariant submodels, the invariant solutions that determine these submodels are obtained either in explicit form, or their search reduces to the solving of the systems of first-order differential equations. For these systems, boundary value problems that have a physical meaning are studied. Conditions are obtained that ensure the existence and uniqueness of the solutions to these boundary value problems. This allows one to correctly solve these boundary value problems numerically. Boundary value problems for some specific values of the parameters included in them are solved numerically. The research carried out is especially relevant in rocket engineering, aircraft engineering, shipbuilding, and other fields.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. The propagation of nonstationary waves in unidirectional composite material is simulated by finite-element analysis. The composite material is explicitly formulated, i.e., discrete, stiff, elastic inclusions uniformly distributed in a viscoelastic matrix are modeled. An original procedure rooted in the linear Boltzmann–Volterra equations accounts for the viscoelastic effects in the matrix behavior. The chosen approach involves finite-element simulations of the transient wave process in two indicative configurations to study the effects attributed to wave scattering by the inclusions. The transient wave propagation in the unidirectional composite material and a viscoelastic specimen without inclusions are compared. Peculiarities in the numerical results due to the finite-element algorithm employed are decoupled from the output that reveals purely mechanical phenomena. For this purpose, the transient wave propagation in a one-dimensional elastic continuum, for which the exact analytical solution is well known, is effectively obtained by finite-element analysis. Furthermore, based on the unidirectional composite a homogenized model is defined by applying the mixture rule. An additional comparison between the composite containing discrete inclusions and the analogous homogenized material provides a basis to assess the output of models obtained by implementing a self-consistent scheme in a broader context.

Abstract:The current waterhammer models coupled with friction models cannot adequately represent the pressure wave attenuation observed in real-world pipe systems, because the pressure wave damping is affected by additional effects not accounted for. One such effect is pipe visco-elasticity from the material behaviour of pipe-wall to be investigated herein. The numerical results indicate that the pressure head attenuation attributable to unsteady friction is comparable to the visco-elastic effect during the initial transient stage, while the visco-elastic effect becomes dominant both in terms of damping and phase shift at later stages. An analytical analysis shows that the visco-elastic effect is more critical if the visco-elastic retardation time is less than the wave travel time along the entire pipeline length. In addition, it is demonstrated that the visco-elastic term in waterhammer models is wrongly referred to in the literature as energy dissipation instead of energy transfer between fluid and pipe-wall by the work done by the pressure force.

Abstract:The forward models frequently adopted for use in the dynamic backcalculation of the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) data are based on the solutions that utilise discrete transforms. In this paper, a new computational algorithm, namely ViscoWave, has been developed and implemented for modelling the pavement dynamics under the FWD impact load. The primary advantage of the proposed solution over some of the existing solutions is that it uses continuous integral transforms (Laplace and Hankel transforms) that are more appropriate for the FWD time histories whose signal characteristics are transient, non-periodic and truncated. Sample runs of the ViscoWave and the validation efforts presented in this paper showed that the proposed algorithm is capable of modelling the dynamics of a layered structure with elastic or viscoelastic material with or without a halfspace, indicating the potential of ViscoWave as a forward model for dynamic backcalculation of flexible pavement properties.

Abstract:The present paper theoretically investigates kink and kink-like waves propagating in pre-stretched Mooney-Rivlin viscoelastic rods. In the constitutive modeling, the Cauchy stress tensor is assumed to consist of an elastic part and a dissipative part. The asymptotic method is adopted to simplify the nonlinear dynamic equations in the limit of finite-small amplitude and long wavelength. Using the reductive perturbation method, we further derive the well-known far-field equation (i.e. the KdV-Burgers equation), to which two kinds of explicit traveling wave solutions are presented. Examples are given to show the influences of pre-stretch and viscosity on the wave shape and wave velocity. It is shown that pre-stretch could be an effective method for modulating the two types of waves. In addition, such waves may be utilized to measure the viscosity coefficient of the material. The competition between the effects of pre-stretch and viscosity on the kink and kink-like waves is also revealed.

Abstract:The paper studies the interaction of a longitudinal wave with transverse waves in general isotropic and unconstrained hyperelastic materials, including the possibility of dissipation. The dissipative term chosen is similar to the classical stress tensor describing a Stokesian fluid and is commonly used in nonlinear acoustics. The aim of this research is to derive the corresponding general equations of motion, valid for any possible form of the strain energy function and to investigate the possibility of obtaining some general and exact solutions to these equations by reducing them to a set of ordinary differential equations. Then the reductions can lead to some exact closed-form solutions for special classes of materials (here the examples of the Hadamard, Blatz-Ko, and power-law strain energy densities are considered, as well as fourth-order elasticity). The solutions derived are in a time/space separable form and may be interpreted as generalized oscillatory shearing motions and generalized sinusoidal standing waves. By means of standard methods of dynamical systems theory, some peculiar properties of waves propagating in compressible materials are uncovered, such as for example, the emergence of destabilizing effects. These latter features exist for highly nonlinear strain energy functions such as the relatively simple power-law strain energy, but they cannot exist in the framework of fourth-order elasticity.

Abstract:To investigate the damage characteristics of viscoelastic materials under various impact scenarios, this study presents a viscoelastic impact damage constitutive model that incorporates a material coefficient, a variable fractional-order differential operator, and a damage factor. Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experiments are conducted under single-impact and repeated-impact conditions. The results indicate that nonlinear features in stress-strain curves at different stages, exhibiting prominent strain rate dependency near the stress peak point in the single-impact scenario. In the repeated-impact scenario, the stress peak points decrease as the impact times increase, resulting in a corresponding decline in the material's load-bearing capacity. Furthermore, strain rate escalates the strain rate increases with an increase in impact times, making the material more susceptible to deformation. Parameter fitting and Sobol sensitivity analysis utilizing experimental data from both scenarios have been employed to explore the effects and patterns of single-parameter and multi-parameter coupling on the model, accurately delineating their influence. These analyses have demonstrated the accuracy of the viscoelastic impact damage constitutive model in capturing dynamic impact damage characteristics of viscoelastic materials across various scenarios.
