Abstract:Our objective is to assess motivation and self-regulated learning domains among undergraduate health professional students during compulsory E-learning in the COVID-19 pandemic, and explore inter-gender variabilities and the correlation between test anxiety and self-regulated learning. Institutional based descriptive study, Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was administered to 291 healthy undergraduate students of health professions programs at Al Marefa University. Two months after shifting to compulsory E-learning, students were invited to return an online standardized self- administered questionnaire via Google form. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. Reliability analysis with an average close to or exceeds the recommended value (α = 0.7). The extrinsic motivation was higher than the intrinsic one, the use of learning strategies was modest. Female students displayed significantly higher motivation and learning strategies scores (P=0.001). Male had higher extrinsic goal orientation P= 0.001, self-efficacy P= 0.043, Help-seeking P= 0.017, while females had a higher time study environment P=0.027. Also, the youngest and oldest students were the most motivated ones (P= 0.04). A positive correlation exists between test anxiety and extrinsic goal orientation (P=0.000). Statistically significant correlations exist between test anxiety and all of the learning strategies scales. There are adequate levels of motivation with moderate use of learning strategies among health professional students during sudden shifting to compulsory E-learning in the COVID-19 pandemic. Females’ students were more self-regulated learners than males. Further investigation of the use of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire and its association with academic achievement is recommended to assess the online teaching experience.

Abstract:Introduction: Learning motivation promotes academic achievement, satisfaction and education of students. Self-efficacy helps students overcome challenges associated with clinical nursing education. A gap remains in the literature related to learning motivation and selfefficacy in undergraduate nursing programs. Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between learning motivation and self-efficacy among undergraduate nursing students. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted on undergraduate nursing students from a public university in Saudi Arabia from February 2021 to April 2021. The Science Motivation Questionnaire II (SMQ-II) to assess motivation and General Self-Efficacy (GSE) scale to assess selfefficacy were used for data collection. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 26.0, bivariate analyses were used where needed and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between motivation levels and self-efficacy while controlling for demographic variables. Results: A total of 110 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study. Most of the sample reported a slightly high level of both learning motivation with a mean of 75.5, range: 8-100 and self-efficacy with a mean of 29.3, range: 1-40. None of the demographic variables were significantly associated with either learning motivation or self-efficacy (p-value>0.05). Learning motivation was found to have a strong, positive and significant correlation (r-value=0.663, p-value<0.001) with selfefficacy. In regression, learning motivation was the only variable significantly associated with self-efficacy (β=0.655, p-value <0.05). Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that motivation is critical in explaining attitudes, predicting consequences of actions, and directing behavior to fulfill the goals of clinical courses. Selfefficacy is another important factor in student nurses’ progress.

Abstract:Background: Motivation is the process whereby goal-directed activities are initiated and sustained. Motivation is a crucial factor in academic achievement. The study aims to measure students' demographic factors and external environments' effect on their motivation and determine the impact of students' motivation and self-efficacy on their learning engagement and academic performance. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study that involved distributing an online digital questionnaire, which was applied in the capital of Saudi Arabia, "Riyadh." The students' motivation was assessed using three scales that are designed to measure the students' intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. Results: In this study, we collected 429 responses from our distributed questionnaire among medical students where males represented 60.1% of the sample. Moreover, we classified the satisfaction level into five subcategories: very satisfied, satisfied, neutral, unsatisfied, and very unsatisfied. We found that most of the students (38.7%) were satisfied with their academic performance, while 17.7% were strongly satisfied. The mean enrollment motivation score in this study was 19.83 (SD 2.69), and when determining its subcategories, we found that the mean intrinsic motivation score was 10.33 (out of 12) and the mean extrinsic motivation score was 10.23 (out of 12). Moreover, the mean self-efficacy score was 9.61 and the mean learning engagement score was 8.97 (out of 12). Moreover, we found that a longer duration needed by the students to reach the college from their residence is significantly associated with lower learning engagement reported by the students (8.54 vs. 9.13 in shorter times, P=0.034). Finally, we found that students who entered medical school as their first choice had significantly higher intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. Conclusion: A student's preference for entering medical school will affect their motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. Moreover, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations significantly correlate with self-efficacy and satisfaction with academic performance; however, they have no effect on the grade point average (GPA) of the last semester. The only factor that positively correlates with students' GPA is learning engagement.

Abstract:Motivation is the cornerstone in building success. If it is strong, the achievement of a greater number of objectives will be assured, and therefore a more glorious success can be met. Thus, to promote motivation, it is advisable to pay particular attention to the pedagogical approach adopted by the teacher, since it has been proven that there is a positive relationship between the choice of an active approach and an enhancing motivation. The situation generated by COVID-19, has been a profitable opportunity to experiment with hybrid “Flipped Classroom” pedagogy, with a view to inverting the class and adapting learning activities, that have been traditionally offered to students, through distance (online) and in-person learning alternately. Thus, the present study aims at evaluating the impact of this Flipped Pedagogy on the motivation of undergraduate students of the Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Healthcare Techniques in Fez. Data have been collected from 410 students, who were questioned before and after the adoption of the Flipped Classroom, based on a motivation scale validated by Rolland Viau in 1994. The answering percentage was of 90.73%. Data analysis demonstrated the existence of a significant relationship between the Flipped Classroom and students' motivation; the motivational profile, which was 18.54%, became 89.25% after flipping the class. The Flipped Classroom can significantly bring a surplus value to pedagogy, hence the importance of broadening its spectrum and integrating it as a new approach of teaching within health sciences educational institutions.
Implementation of Online Teaching in Medical Education: Lessons Learned from Students’ Perspectives during the Health Crisis in Marrakesh, Morocco

Abstract:Background. On the announcement of the COVID-19 health emergency, the Marrakesh School of Medicine accelerated the digitization and the establishment of courses available to students through the faculty platform. We aimed to describe the students’ perspectives toward the online educational approach implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and to investigate the factors that might affect the implementation of online teaching in the future. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study among medical students in Marrakesh during June-July 2020. Data collection was based on a self-administered electronic questionnaire distributed via the student platform. We studied the knowledge and previous practices of virtual technologies and students’ appreciation of distance learning during the lockdown. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using SPSS16.0 software. Results. A total of 111 students participated. The female-to-male sex ratio was 2.2 with an average age of 20.6 ± 1.8. The majority of students felt that they had a good knowledge of virtual technologies (on a scale of 1 to 10, 81% ≥ 5/10), and two-thirds reported using them in medical studies. Before the COVID-19 lockdown, 16.2% of the students used the platform and 39.6% did not attend in-person courses (16.0% in 1st cycle versus 49.2% in 2nd cycle, p = 0.01 ). During the pandemic, 79% of the students appreciated the virtual learning (54.0% in 1st cycle versus 89.0% in 2nd cycle, p < 0.001 ) and 80.2% thought that the online courses were understandable. Regarding to student’s preferences, 41.4% preferred blended education and 68.5% of the students would recommend continuing distance learning after the pandemic. Regarding satisfaction, previous use of the educational platform (OR = 66.3, CI 95% [1.9; 2.2 ∗ 103]), improvement of learning during distance learning (OR = 22.6, IC 95% [4.1, 123.7]), and professor support (OR = 7, IC95% [1.3, 38]) seemed to be the most powerful factors in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion. Our results will contribute to the implementation of actions by taking advantage of the experience during the health crisis. The institutionalization of virtual learning with more interaction in addition to the in-person courses is the main recommendation of this study.
Towards improving online learning in physical education: Gender differences and determinants of motivation, psychological needs satisfaction, and academic achievement in Saudi students

Abstract:Studies on students' perceptions and expectations during physical education (PE) online learning remain scarce. Centered on self-determination theory, the present cross-sectional study aims to identify gender differences and predictors affecting motivation, psychological needs satisfaction (PNS), and academic achievement during PE online learning. Data were collected from Saudi students' (N = 308, 161 females and 147 males) responses to the PE autonomy, relatedness, competence, and motivation questionnaires. Welch's t-test for unequal sample sizes, multiple linear regression, and binary logistic regression were used to compare means and to predict the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The results showed higher autonomy and competence perceptions in female than in male students, but no differences were observed in relatedness. Female students presented higher intrinsic motivations, lower amotivation perceptions than males. However, no gender differences were recorded in extrinsic motivation. Students with less experience in online learning and weak grade point averages (GPAs) are more susceptible to having a high level of amotivation. Gender, GPA, and prior experience with online learning are the common predictors for all PNS and amotivation, while GPA and prior experience with online learning are the determinants of intrinsic motivation. GPA is affected by prior experience with online learning, autonomy, competence, intrinsic motivation, and amotivation. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to adapt their didactic-pedagogical behaviors during PE online learning according to students' motivation and autonomy perceptions. Structuring teaching activities with more individualized support for autonomy, competence, intrinsic motivation, and students' online skills/competencies ensures better learning efficiency and academic achievements.

Burnout and predictive factors among medical students: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background: Burnout is a growing problem in medical education, and is usually characterised by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. Currently, the majority of burnout studies have been conducted in western high-income countries, overshadowing findings from low- and middle-income countries. Our objective is to investigate burnout and its associated predictive factors in Morocco, aiming to guide intervention strategies, while also assessing differences between the preclinical and clinical years. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-administered online survey assessing burnout dimensions and its main determinants was distributed among medical students at Université Mohammed VI des Sciences et de la Santé (UM6SS, Casablanca, Morocco). Descriptive analyses involved computing mean scores, standard deviations and Pearson correlations. Further, t-tests were performed to check for significant differences in burnout dimensions across the preclinical and clinical learning phase, and stepwise linear regression analyses were conducted using a backward elimination method to estimate the effects of the selected variables on the three burnout dimensions. Results: A t-test assessing the difference in cynicism found a significant difference between students at the preclinical phase and the clinical phase, t(90) = -2.5, p = 0.01. For emotional exhaustion and reduced professional efficacy no significant difference was observed. A linear regression analysis showed that emotional exhaustion was significantly predicted by workload, work-home conflict, social support from peers and neuroticism. Cynicism was predicted by the learning phase, workload, meaningfulness and neuroticism; and reduced professional efficacy by neuroticism only. Conclusions: Our findings suggest a potential gradual increase in cynicism during medical education in Morocco. Conducting this study in a low- and middle income country has enhanced the scientific understanding of burnout in these regions. Given the identified predictive factors for burnout, such as workload, work-home conflict, support from peers, neuroticism, and meaningfulness, it is necessary to focus on these elements when developing burnout interventions.
Construction and validation of the physical science learning motivation scale among Moroccan middle school students

Abstract:This paper presents two studies concerning developing and validating an Arabic version of a scale that measures motivation toward learning physical science in Moroccan middle school students. The scale is based on the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985). It comprises five dimensions: intrinsic motivation, three forms of extrinsic motivation (identified regulation, introjected regulation, and external regulation), and amotivation. The exploratory factor analysis (study 1) was conducted on a sample of 144 students, and the confirmatory factor analysis (study 2) was performed on another sample of 404 students. The results of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses support a five-factor structure. The results also reveal that the scale and five factors have satisfactory internal consistency indices. Moreover, the construct validity is supported by correlations between the five factors that comprise the scale. All the results thus support the psychometric qualities of the physical science learning motivation scale.

Abstract:To the Editor: Extensive eosinophilic infiltrates in the epidermis often suggest bullous diseases, such as bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus foliaceus, and pemphigus vulgaris. We observed epidermal cysts with extensive eosinophilic infiltrates on scrotal examinations, which may be related to scrotal calcinosis. A 48-year-old man presented with 4 dermal nodules, which existed since he was 2 years-old. These nodules were pruritic at times with no other clinical inflammatory manifestation. The patient had developed spontaneous pneumothorax at 20 years of age not related to any allergic disease. Clinical examination revealed 4 hard dermal nodules less than 10 mm in diameter on the left side of the scrotum (Fig. 1). Epidermal cysts or scrotal calcinosis were suspected on clinical examination. Laboratory findings showed that serum calcium and phosphate levels as well as eosinophil counts were within normal limits. All 4 nodules were resected and subjected to histopathological examination, which revealed epidermal cysts (Fig. 2A). On histopathological examination, extensive eosinophilic infiltrates were found in all cyst walls and interspersed with keratin inside the cysts (Fig. 2B). In addition, numerous eosinophils and lymphocytes were found at the periphery of the cyst. In one of the cysts, granular basophilic material was found interspersed with keratin, which was determined to be calcium on von Kossa staining (Figs. 2C, D). No microorganism was observed on periodic acid–Schiff, Ziehl–Neelsen, and Grocott staining. Many reports suggested that scrotal calcinosis develop in the setting of the epidermal cysts. Usually, this change is accompanied by a few inflammatory infiltrates. Based on these prior reports, extensive eosinophilic infiltration and calcium deposition in cysts may be coincidental. However, Novack et al highlighted the existence of some relationship between eosinophils and calcification by describing 2 cases with hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) of prolonged course. A 35-year-old man with HES showed calcification of the femoral, iliac, radial, ulnar, common carotid, occipital, and posterior tibial vessels on x-ray examination. Histological examination of the surgically amputated toes showed perivascular eosinophilic cuffing with arteriolar thrombosis accompanying no arteriosclerotic changes. A 52-year-old man with HES showed diffuse arterial calcification of posterior tibial and digital vessels on x-ray examination. Although Novack et al stated that the cause of this calcification is unknown, they attributed it to injury and degenerative changes in peripheral arteries. Similarly, we speculate that eosinophilic infiltrates may cause calcification in cysts directly or indirectly via degenerative changes. Eosinophilic infiltrates in the epidermis are often found in early stages of bullous diseases. However, eosinophilic infiltration into the cornified layer through the epidermis is rare. Therefore, we first suspected the presence of some microorganism within the cysts; however, the special stains revealed nothing. The patient had no medical history of allergic diseases. In the present case, accumulation of extensive eosinophilic infiltrates in cysts is an enigma.
The efficiency of the distance learning system and contributions of behavioural practices to motivation and passion for research in metacognition in its prediction

Abstract:The expansion of the use of distance learning systems has made many countries around the world search for the degree and level of their efficiency. Distance learning systems are based on several factors, the most important of which is the motivation and passion for research in metacognition for learners. This study aims to reach the degree of availability of the motivation and passion for metacognition as predictors of distance learning efficiency by developing two scales for them. A quantitative survey approach is used in this study. Psychometric properties of the developed scales were verified. The results showed that there are influences of motivation and passion for research in metacognition on the efficiency of the distance education system. It also confirmed that there is a strong and mutual influence relationship between motivation and passion for metacognition. The results also revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the average responses on both scales in favour of the gifted, third-year students, and students with higher achievement scores. There were no statistically significant differences between the averages of students' responses on both scales due to their gender, academic branch, and the learning platforms used.

Abstract:Introduction Teachers encounter various challenges that can significantly affect their professional well-being. This issue stands as of paramount importance, for it not only wields influence over job satisfaction but also carries weighty implications for the quality of education provided. Objectives This study aims to investigate the factors that affect teachers' well-being, specifically examining the relationship between perceived stress, psychosocial risks, and burnout among public high school teachers in Tetouan, Morocco. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 258 teachers, resulting in a response rate of 57%. Three distinct instruments were used to collect data: The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to evaluate perceived stress levels, the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) to assess psychosocial risks at work, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for burnout measurement. We examined the bivariate correlations among these three concepts. Results The results demonstrate significant associations among the studied factors. Perceived stress has a positive correlation with emotional exhaustion (r=0.51; p<0.01) and depersonalization (r=0.56; p<0.01), and a negative correlation with personal accomplishment (r=-0.31; p<0.01). Additionally, emotional exhaustion has a positive correlation with psychological demand (r=0.38; p<0.01). Depersonalization shows a positive correlation with psychological demand (r=0.18; p<0.05), but a negative correlation with decision latitude (r=-0.30; p<0.01) and social assistance (r=-0.24; p<0.01). Conversely, personal accomplishment presents a positive correlation with decision latitude (r=0.58; p<0.01) and social assistance (r=0.50; p<0.01). Conclusions This study underscores the importance of decision latitude and social assistance in promoting personal accomplishment and mitigating burnout among teachers. Nonetheless, further research is required to substantiate these results and determine the fundamental cause and effect relationships. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:Academic motivation is one of the indices of success in scientific activities. Therefore, the goal of the present research is to predict academic motivation based on variables of personality traits, academic self-efficacy, academic alienation, and social support in students studying in different fields of paramedicine. The research was correlation-descriptive in which 183 paramedical university students in the academic year of 2019-2020 were selected by a two-stage cluster random sampling method, studying in the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. The data were collected through the Vallerand Academic Motivation questionnaire, NEO Personality Inventory Test, Sherer Self-Efficacy questionnaire, Fleming Social Support questionnaire, and Johnson Academic Alienation, and the collected data were analyzed (Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression) using SPSS V.22 software. The results showed that personality traits of extroversion ( β=0.255,p<0.01 ), openness to experience ( β=0.185,p<0.01 ), conscientiousness ( β=0.136,p<0.01 ), and self-efficacy could predict academic motivation, significantly; but neuroticism ( β=−0.188,p<0.05 ), and academic alienation ( β=−0.111,p<0.05 ) reversely related to academic motivation. Self-efficacy ( β=0.121,p<0.05 ) could significantly predict academic motivation. There was also a significant relationship between social support and academic motivation. The results of the research illustrated that some of the personality traits and self-efficacy had a positive role in predicting academic motivation among paramedical students, and neuroticism and alienation had a reverse negative role in academic motivation. Therefore, in order to promote the academic level of students, it is necessary to improve the harmful effects of self-efficacy and some personality traits that improve better learning performance and quality.

Abstract:Purpose: This study used a self-deterministic approach to explore the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), academic motivation (AM), and achievement among health science students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in three cities of Saudi Arabia (Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah). A convenience sample of 450 students was incorporated using the multistage cluster sampling technique. The online survey contained three sections: students' basic data and academic achievement level, the modified Schutte self-report inventory, and the Academic Motivation Scale lowercase. Results: This study revealed moderate overall scores for EI (57.1%), AM (55.6%), and grade point average (GPA) (57.6%). The overall EI score, its domains, and GPA had significant positive correlations with overall AM and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (p < .01). Amotivation had an insignificant correlation with GPA (p < .05), but it was negatively correlated with EI and its domains (p < .01). Multiple regression analysis proved that EI domains predicted 5.0% of GPA variance; emotions appraisal and expression (β = .02, p = .024), regulation (β = .11, p = .032), and utilization (β = .24, p < .01). EI domains also predicted 26.0% of AM variance; emotions appraisal and expression (β = .11, p = .04), regulation (β = .33, p < .01), and utilization (β = .23, p <.01). Moreover, AM predicted 4.0% of the variance in GPA; intrinsic (β = .25, p = .004) and extrinsic (β = .11, p = .022) motivation. AM also predicted 25.0% of the variance in EI: intrinsic (β = .34, p < .01) and extrinsic motivation (β = .26, p = .026). Conclusion: EI and AM have a bidirectional influence on each other, significantly shaping the GPA of health sciences students in Saudi Arabia, where intrinsic motivation has a predominant role. Thus, promoting students' AM and EI is recommended to foster their academic achievement.
The Impact of Motivation on MOOC Retention Rates: A Systematic Review

Abstract:This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of motivational strategies on learner engagement and retention rates in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we analyzed 140 studies published between 2014 and 2023 from key academic databases. The objective was to identify and evaluate motivational strategies that significantly reduce MOOC dropout rates. Our findings reveal that personalized learning, interactive content, and peer collaboration are strongly correlated with increased learner engagement and persistence. These strategies align well with learners' intrinsic goals, enhancing their educational experience and adherence to courses. The review also identifies gaps, such as the need for longitudinal studies and culturally tailored motivational strategies, offering a refined agenda for future research in MOOC education. This study contributes to the field by systematically synthesizing existing research, providing new insights into effective educational strategies, and highlighting areas for improvement in MOOC design and implementation. Investigating Relationship of Perceived Learning Engagement, Motivation, and Academic Performance Among Nursing Students: A Multisite Study

Abstract:Background Learning engagement, motivation and academic achievement are vital growing areas in academic research. Evidence suggests that students’ engagement and motivation are positively linked to improved quality of learning. However, limited number of research studies have been conducted within this scope. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship of learning engagement, motivation and academic performance among university nursing students. Participants and Methods A descriptive design, with a comparative correlational approach for data analysis, was used to describe and compare study outcomes. Data was collected from 425 students at King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz University for Health Sciences campuses in Riyadh, Jeddah and Alhasa. Study instruments included background data sheet, students’ engagement in schools (SESQ-ENG), engagement facilitators (SEI), academic motivation (AMS), and academic achievement as measured by cumulative and last semester grade point average (cGPA, sGPA). Results Overall, level of engagement was moderate (mean = 3.70±0.63) with significant differences among campuses (F = 18.88, p≤001). Students’ perceptions of engagement facilitators and academic motivation were high (mean= 2.98 ±0.49, 4.89 ±1.03, respectively), and both varied by campus (F=6.35, p=0.002, F=9.85, p≤.001, respectively). Engagement, motivation, and academic achievement showed medium to large correlations (i.e., between 0.20 and 0.63). Multiple regression equation including age, academic progress, academic engagement, motivation and engagement facilitators significantly explained 24% of variance in cGPA (F (5, 226) =14.209, p < 0.001) and 22% of the variance in sGPA (F (5, 214) = 12.202, p < 0.001). Conclusion This study showed significant associations of students’ engagement, facilitating conditions (e.g., engagement-fostering aspects), and students’ motivation with significant effect on academic achievement. It is hoped that findings of this study could be used as quality indicators to direct school efforts towards achieving excellence in nursing education.

Abstract:Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa presents with typical cutaneous lesions of polyarteritis nodosa without visceral involvement at the time of diagnosis. We report a 32‐year‐old woman with a 12‐year history of myasthenia gravis under immunosuppressive treatment, who presented with tender, erythematous nodules 20 mm in diameter on her shins. A diagnosis of cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa was made, based on the clinical and histopathological findings. Myasthenia gravis, an antibody‐mediated disease, is occasionally accompanied by other autoimmune diseases, but we found no previous report in the literature associating it with polyarteritis nodosa.
