Abstract:The study of topology in quantum materials has fundamentally advanced our understanding in condensed matter physics and potential applications in next‐generation quantum information technology. Recently, the discovery of a topological Chern phase in the spin‐orbit coupled Kagome lattice TbMn6Sn6 has attracted considerable interest. Whereas these phenomena highlight the contribution of momentum space Berry curvature and Chern gap on the electronic transport properties, less is known about the intrinsic real space magnetic texture, which is crucial for understanding the electronic properties and further exploring the unique quantum behavior. Here, we directly observe the stabilization of topological magnetic skyrmions in TbMn6Sn6 using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L‐TEM) near room temperature, where the spins experience full spin reorientation transition (SRT) between the a and c axes. We construct an effective spin Hamiltonian based on the Ginzburg‐Landau theory and perform micromagnetic simulation to clarify the critical role of Ruderman‐Kittel‐Kasuya‐Yosida (RKKY) interaction on the stabilization of skyrmion lattice. Our results not only uncover non‐trivially spin topological texture in TbMn6Sn6, but also provide a solid basis to study its interplay with electronic topology. Abstract: The quantum level interplay between geometry, topology, and correlation is at the forefront of fundamental physics. Owing to the unusual lattice geometry and breaking of time-reversal symmetry, kagome magnets are predicted to support intrinsic Chern quantum phases. However, quantum materials hosting ideal spin-orbit coupled kagome lattices with strong out-of-plane magnetization have been lacking. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to discover a new topological kagome magnet TbMn6Sn6, which is close to satisfying the above criteria. We visualize its effectively defect-free purely Mn-based ferromagnetic kagome lattice with atomic resolution. Remarkably, its electronic state exhibits distinct Landau quantization upon the application of a magnetic field, and the quantized Landau fan structure features spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap. We further demonstrate the bulk-boundary correspondence between the Chern gap and topological edge state, as well as the Berry curvature field correspondence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Our results point to the realization of a quantum-limit Chern phase in TbMn6Sn6, opening up an avenue for discovering topological quantum phenomena in the RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth element) family with a variety of magnetic structures. Our visualization of the magnetic bulk-boundary-Berry correspondence covering real and momentum space demonstrates a proof-of-principle method revealing topological magnets.

Abstract:Kagome magnets R Mn 6 Sn 6 ( R = lanthanides) manifest novel topological phases and field-induced transitions, owing to the interplay between strong correlations and geometrical frustration among the corner-sharing-triangle intralayers. Here we report the magnetometry and magnetoelectric transport properties of TmMn 6 Sn 6 single crystal, which coexists with Tm and Mn magnetic sublattices. We reveal that this compound displays multiple magnetic structures with the increase of in-plane magnetic field. The combination of non-collinear magnetic structure and real-space Berry curvature leads to a remarkable topological Hall effect over an extensive temperature range. The in-plane magnetic transition is accompanied by a large magnetoresistance effect of -32 ∼ -17% from 10 K to 300 K at 7 T, and the magnetoresistance manifests two peaks with increasing the in-plane field. These observations suggest a robust Mn - Tm magnetic coupling, which provides a nontrivial ferrimagnetic network for the further investigation of new emergent topological magnetic structures.

Spin chirality engineering induced giant topological Hall effect in a kagome magnet

Abstract:The ferrimagnet TbMn6Sn6 has attracted vast attention, because its pristine Mn kagome lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling and out-of-plane Tb-Mn exchange supports quantum-limit Chern topological magnetism which can be described by the simple spinless Haldane model. We unveil herein that engineering the pristine kagome lattice through partial replacement of Mn by nonmagnetic Cr which tends to concentrate into the single Mn1 layer in a unit cell breaks the collinear configuration of Mn spins and reduces the D6h point group symmetry to the C2 one. The nearly isolated Tb networks result in easily polarized Tb spins even under a weak magnetic field, and simultaneously, different spin chirality of the Tb-Mn1-Mn1 and Mn1-Mn1-Mn1. Such a peculiar spin structure leads to a plateau-like topological Hall effect with a record resistivity of 19.1 {\mu}Ohm cm among bulk systems. Our direct visualization of the domain-wall structure and its evolution under external magnetic field fully support the picture, thus highlighting the pivotal role of broken kagome lattice symmetry in generating the peculiar spin chirality in real space. Our results set a paradigm for exploration of exotic properties in kagome topological magnets and would be a proof-of-principle strategy for investigating the correlation between magnetism and exotic topological properties in kagome lattice.

Intriguing magnetism of the topological kagome magnet TbMn_6Sn_6

Abstract: Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the transition-metal-based kagome magnet TbMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$. Our results show that the system exhibits an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure $P6/mm'm'$ (comprised by Tb and Mn moments) with slow magnetic fluctuations in a wide temperature range. These fluctuations exhibit a slowing down below $T_{\rm C1}^{*}$ ${\simeq}$ 120 K and a slightly modified quasi-static magnetic state is established below $T_{\rm C1}$ ${\simeq}$ 20 K. A canted variation of the $P6/mm'm'$ structure is possible, where all moments contribute to a net $c$-axis ferrimagnetic state which exhibits zero net in-plane components. Alternatively, a small incommensurate $k$-vector could arise below $T_{\rm C1}$. We further show that the temperature evolution of the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is strongly influenced by the low temperature magnetic crossover. More importantly, the here identified magnetic state seems to be responsible for the large quasi-linear magnetoresistance as well as for the appearance of quantum oscillations, which are related to the quantized Landau fan structure featuring a spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap. Therefore the exciting perspective of a magnetic system arises in which the topological response can be controlled, and thus explored, over a wide range of parameters.

Abstract:TbMn6Sn6 is a correlated topological magnet with a Mn-based kagome lattice, in which a Chern gap opens at the Dirac point at low temperatures. The magnetic moment direction of the ferrimagnetic order changes from in the kagome plane to out-of-plane upon cooling, which is essential for generating the Chern gap, but the underlying mechanism for the spin reorientation remains elusive. Here, we investigate the spin-reorientation transition in TbMn6Sn6 using neutron scattering. We provide direct evidence for the spin-reorientation transition and unveil the coexistence of two Tb modes at 200 K. To account for these results, we put forward a model based on SU(N) spin-wave theory, in which there is a temperature evolution of the ground state Tb 4 f orbitals, driven by the crystalline electric field, single-ion anisotropy, and exchange interactions between Tb and Mn ions. Our findings shed light on the complex magnetism of TbMn6Sn6, despite its relatively simple ground state magnetic structure, and provide insights into the mechanisms for tuning magnetic topological materials.

Abstract:Generation and control of topological spin textures constitutes one of the most exciting challenges of modern spintronics given their potential applications in information storage technologies. Of particular interest are magnetic insulators, which due to low damping, absence of Joule heating and reduced dissipation could provide energy‐efficient spin‐textures platform. Here we demonstrate that the interplay between sample thickness, external magnetic fields and optical excitations can generate a prolific paramount of spin textures, and their coexistence in insulating CrBr3 van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets. Using high‐resolution magnetic force microscopy and large‐scale micromagnetic simulation methods, we demonstrate the existence of a large region in T‐B phase diagram where different stripe domains, skyrmion crystals and magnetic domains exist and can be intrinsically selected or transformed to each‐other via a phase‐switch mechanism. Lorentz transmission electron microscopy unveiled the mixed chirality of the magnetic textures which are of Bloch‐type at given conditions but can be further manipulated into Néel‐type or hybrid‐type via thickness‐engineering. The topological phase transformation between the different magnetic objects could be further inspected by standard photoluminescence optical probes resolved by circular polarization indicative of an existance of exciton‐skyrmion coupling mechanism. Our findings identified vdW magnetic insulators as a promising framework of materials for the manipulation and generation of highly ordered skyrmion lattices relevant for device integration at the atomic level. Topological phase transitions and thermal Hall effect in a noncollinear spin texture

Abstract:The noncollinear spin textures provide promising avenues to stabilize exotic magnetic phases and excitations. They have attracted vast attention owning to their nontrivial band topology in the past decades. Distinct from the conventional route of involving the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a honeycomb magnet, the interplay of bond-dependent Kitaev and $\Gamma$ interactions, originating from the spin-orbit coupling and octahedra crystal field in real materials, has demonstrated to be another source to generate noncollinear spin textures with multiple spins in a magnetic unit cell. Notably, earlier works have revealed a triple-meron crystal (TmX) consisting of eighteen spins in the frustrated Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model. Aligning with previous efforts, here we attempt to identify that the TmX hosts several peculiar features with the help of the linear spin-wave theory. To begin with, the symmetric anisotropic exchanges are beneficial for the existence of nonreciprocal magnons, which are stabilized by an external magnetic field. Further, within the regime of TmX, successive topological phase transitions occur, accompanied by the changes of Chern number in value and thermal Hall conductivity in sign. In addition, topological nature of magnons is also verified by the onset of chiral edge modes in a nanoribbon geometry. Our findings pave the way to study topological phenomena of noncollinear spin textures in potential Kitaev materials.

Abstract:Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and materials science, of which kagome magnets appear as a highly promising platform. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the recently identified topological kagome system TbMn 6 Sn 6 using muon spin rotation, combined with local field analysis and neutron diffraction. Our studies identify an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure with slow magnetic fluctuations which exhibit a critical slowing down below T_C1^* ≃ 120 K and finally freeze into static patches with ideal out-of-plane order below T C1 ≃ 20 K. We further show that hydrostatic pressure of 2.1 GPa stabilises the static out-of-plane topological ferrimagnetic ground state in the whole volume of the sample. Therefore the exciting perspective arises of a magnetically-induced topological system whose magnetism can be controlled through external parameters. The present results will stimulate theoretical investigations to obtain a microscopic understanding of the relation between the low-temperature volume-wise magnetic evolution of the static c -axis ferrimagnetic patches and the topological electronic properties in TbMn 6 Sn 6 .

Abstract:Topologically protected magnetic "whirls" such as skyrmions in antiferromagnetic materials have recently attracted extensive interests due to their nontrivial band topology and potential application in antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, the room‐temperature skyrmions in natural metallic antiferromagnetic materials with merit of probably conveniently electrical manipulation have not been reported. Here, we realize room‐temperature skyrmions in a non‐collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn capped with a Pt overlayer. The evolution of spin textures from coplanar inverted triangular structures to Bloch‐type skyrmions is achieved via tuning the magnitude of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii – Moriya interaction. Beyond that, the temperature can induce an unconventional transition from skyrmions to antiferromagnetic meron‐like spin textures at approximately 220 K in our Mn3Sn/Pt samples. Combining with the theoretical calculations, we find the transition is originated from the temperature dependence of antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between kagome sublayers within the Mn3Sn crystalline unitcell. Prevalence of house soiling and aggression in kittens during the first year after adoption from a humane society.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine frequency of house soiling, aggression toward people, and aggression toward other cats among kittens adopted from an animal shelter and whether frequency of these behaviors was associated with age at the time of neutering. DESIGN Survey. ANIMALS 126 kittens adopted from a humane society at 6 to 13 weeks of age. PROCEDURE Owners of the kittens were contacted by telephone approximately 4, 18, and 52 weeks after kittens were adopted, and a behavioral assessment questionnaire was administered. Owners were asked to indicate whether the kitten had displayed the specific behavior in the preceding 30 days. Sixty-three kittens were neutered prior to adoption; the remaining 63 were neutered at 5 to 7 months of age, after the second behavioral assessment. RESULTS In the month following adoption, 64 (50.8%) kittens were reported to have at least 1 of the 3 behaviors. There was no evidence that the 3 behaviors were related. The percentage of kittens reported to urinate or defecate outside the litter box decreased from the first to second evaluation and remained low at the third evaluation. The percentage of kittens reported to show aggression toward people and the percentage reported to show aggression toward other cats decreased from the first to second evaluation, but increased again at the third evaluation. There was no significant association between age at the time of neutering and any of the 3 behaviors. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest behavior problems may be common in kittens adopted from a humane society, particularly during the first month after adoption.
Topological Spin Textures in 1T -Phase Janus Magnets: Interplay Between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction, Magnetic Frustration, and Isotropic Higher-Order Interactions

Abstract:The search for topological magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials is one of the hot topics in spintronics. We present comprehensive studies of magnetic phases in a series of Janus monolayers MnXZ (MnAsBr, MnAsI, MnPBr, and MnPCl) and CrY Z (Y = Se, Te; and Z = Cl, Br, I) via combining first-principles calculations and atomistic spin model simulations. Sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be realized in the MnXZ and CrY Z monolayers due to their intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking. More interestingly, the MnXZ and CrY Z monolayers exhibit different degrees of magnetic frustration and isotropic higher-order inter-actions. Lastly, our atomistic spin model simulations demonstrate that a variety of topological spin textures can be generated by the interplay among complex magnetic interactions. These results provide valuable information and fundamental understanding for topological magnetism in 2D magnets.

Abstract:RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth element) kagome magnets have attracted much attention owing to their potential for realizing the emerging topological properties in both reciprocal and real spaces. One of the RMn6Sn6 members, ScMn6Sn6, is predicted to possess room temperature-stabilized chiral spin textures arising from frustrated exchange interactions, but further experimental evidence has not been well established yet. In this work, we fabricate high-quality ScMn6Sn6 single crystals and systematically study their magnetoelectric transport properties. A large topological Hall effect is observed within the temperature range from 100 to 320 K with the magnetic field applied along the parallel direction of the kagome plane. This observation suggests that the spin textures in ScMn6Sn6 have a nonzero scalar spin chirality over a wide temperature range. Our results identify ScMn6Sn6 as a promising member of the rare earth element kagome magnets that hosts chiral spin textures at room temperature.

Abstract:Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$. The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of massive Dirac fermions. Our observation demonstrates a close relationship between rare-earth magnetism and topological electron structure, indicating the rare-earth elements can effectively engineer the Chern quantum phase in kagome magnets.

Abstract:Topological magnetic textures are promising candidates as binary data units for the next‐generation memory device. The precise generation and convenient control of nontrivial spin topology at zero field near room temperature endows the critical advantages in skyrmionic devices but has not been simultaneously integrated into one material. Here, in the Kagome plane of quantum TbMn6Sn6, we report the expedient generation of the skyrmion bubbles in versatile forms of lattice, chain and isolated one by converging the electron beam, where the electron intensity gradient contributes to the dynamic generation from local anisotropy variation near spin reorientation transition (SRT). Encouragingly, by utilizing the dynamic shift of SRT domain interface, the straight movement is actualized with skyrmion bubble slaved to SRT domain interface forming an elastic composite object, avoiding the usual deflection from the skyrmion Hall effect. The critical contribution of the SRT domain interface via convenient electron‐assisted heating source is further theoretically validated via micromagnetic simulation, highlighting the compatible application possibility in advanced device. Topological charge-entropy scaling in kagome Chern magnet TbMn6Sn6

Abstract:Abstract In ordinary materials, electrons conduct both electricity and heat, where their charge-entropy relations observe the Mott formula and the Wiedemann-Franz law. In topological quantum materials, the transverse motion of relativistic electrons can be strongly affected by the quantum field arising around the topological fermions, where a simple model description of their charge-entropy relations remains elusive. Here we report the topological charge-entropy scaling in the kagome Chern magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6 , featuring pristine Mn kagome lattices with strong out-of-plane magnetization. Through both electric and thermoelectric transports, we observe quantum oscillations with a nontrivial Berry phase, a large Fermi velocity and two-dimensionality, supporting the existence of Dirac fermions in the magnetic kagome lattice. This quantum magnet further exhibits large anomalous Hall, anomalous Nernst, and anomalous thermal Hall effects, all of which persist to above room temperature. Remarkably, we show that the charge-entropy scaling relations of these anomalous transverse transports can be ubiquitously described by the Berry curvature field effects in a Chern-gapped Dirac model. Our work points to a model kagome Chern magnet for the proof-of-principle elaboration of the topological charge-entropy scaling.

Abstract:Particle-like magnetic textures with nanometric sizes, such as skyrmions, are potentially suitable for designing high-efficiency information bits in future spintronics devices. In general, the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions and dipolar interactions are the dominant factors for generating nonlinear spin configurations. However, to stabilize the topological skyrmions, an external magnetic field is usually required. In this study, the spontaneous emergence of skyrmions is directly observed, together with the unique successive topological domain evolution during the spin reorientation transition in a neodymium–cobalt (NdCo5) rare-earth magnet. On decreasing the temperature, nanometric skyrmion lattices evolve into enclosed in-plane domains (EIPDs) similar to mini bar-magnets with size below 120 nm. The internal magnetization rotates with magnetic anisotropy, demonstrating the ability to manipulate the mini bar-magnets. The nanoscale EIPD lattices remain robust over the wide temperature range of 241–167 K, indicating the possibility of high-density in-plane magnetic information storage. The generation of spontaneous magnetic skyrmions and the successive domain transformation in the traditional NdCo5 rare-earth magnet may prompt application exploration for topological magnetic spin textures with novel physical mechanisms in versatile magnets.

Abstract:Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn6Sn6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y) family compounds. We observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn6Sn6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search and investigation on new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

Abstract:TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ has attracted a lot of recent interest for a variety of reasons, most importantly, because of the hypothesis that it may support quantum-limit Chern topological magnetism, derived from the kagome geometry. Besides, TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ features a highly unusual magnetic reorientation transition about 100 K below the Curie point, whereby all spins in the system, remaining collinear, rotate by 90$^\circ$. In this work, we address both issues combining experiment, mean-field theory and first-principle calculations. Both magnetic reorientation and the unusual temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) find quantitative explanation in the fact that Mn and Tb, by virtue of the Mermin-Wagner theorem, have very different spin dynamics, with Tb spins experiencing much more rapid fluctuation. We were able to cleanly extract the intrinsic AHC from our experiment, and calculated the same microscopically, with good semiquantitative agreement. We have identified the points in the band structure responsible for the AHC and showed that they are not the kagome-derived Dirac points at the K-corner of the Brillouin zone, as conjectured previously.
