Abstract:Abstract The development of biobased polymeric materials for wastewater purification has become a demand due to the growing need for water free of hazardous metal ions for safe purposes. The organic components of the OLLW including carbohydrates, phenolics, aromatic acids and others are cost-effective and sustainable choices for this application. This work focuses on a method for turning the organic components of liquid waste from the olive industry (OILW) into a foam-based value-added polymer that has several metal ion binding sites. The process of making the target polymers involved reacting the components of the OILW with hexamethylene diisocyante and 1,4-phnyelene diisocynate to create the polymeric materials LHMIDIC and LPDIC that are in foam forms with urethane linkages, respectively. The adsorption competence of the polymeric foams toward Pb(II) was evaluated as a function of various parameters including adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, initial ion concentration and time. The optimum parameters values that led to a quantitative removal of Pb(II) were identified. The obtained thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption by the two foams was spontaneous at room temperature. The isothermal and kinetic values showed that the adsorption by synthesized foams follows a second order kinetic and obeys the Langmuir isothermal model. The foams showed a high tendency for removing multi metal ions present in a real sample of wastewater. The original nature of the starting material used in making the foam, cost and the obtained results showed the potential of using the foam in a large-scale plants of wastewater purification. Abstract:Synaptic Strength Modulation after Cortical Trauma: A Role in Epileptogenesis. Avramescu S, Timofeev I. J Neurosci. 2008;28(27):6760–6772. Traumatic brain injuries are often followed by abnormal hyperexcitability, leading to acute seizures and epilepsy. Previous studies documented the rewiring capacity of neocortical neurons in response to various cortical and subcortical lesions. However, little information is available on the functional consequences of these anatomical changes after cortical trauma and the adaptation of synaptic connectivity to a decreased input produced by chronic deafferentation. In this study, we recorded intracellular (IC) activities of cortical neurons simultaneously with extracellular (EC) unit activities and field potentials of neighboring cells in cat cortex, after a large transection of the white matter underneath the suprasylvian gyrus, in acute and chronic conditions (at 2, 4, and 6 weeks) in ketamine–xylazine-anesthetized cats. Using EC spikes to compute the spike-triggered averages of IC membrane potential, we found an increased connection probability and efficacy between cortical neurons weeks after cortical trauma. Inhibitory interactions showed no significant changes in the traumatized cortex compared with control. The increased synaptic efficacy was accompanied by enhanced input resistance and intrinsic excitability of cortical neurons, as well as by increased duration of silent network periods. Our electrophysiological data revealed functional consequences of previously reported anatomical changes in the injured cortex. We suggest that homeostatic synaptic plasticity compensating the decreased activity in the undercut cortex leads to an uncontrollable cortical hyperexcitability and seizure generation.

Abstract:Olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) poses an undeniable environmental problem due to its high organic loads and phenolic compound (PC) content. This study determined the optimal conditions for preparing a new bio-sorbent from olive pomace (OP) and the adsorptive treatment of OMWW by this bio-sorbent. The activation reaction was performed with hydrogen peroxide. The results of the combination effect optimization of the three preparation variables, the activation temperature (°C) X 1 , the activation time (min) X 2 , and the impregnation ratio X 3 , are presented by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at an activation time of 240 min, a temperature of 80 °C, and a ratio equal to 6.2:1. The bio-sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The adsorption process performance of this bio-sorbent was examined in batch (phenol solution) and fixed-bed columns (real effluent of OMWW). An adsorption capacity of 789.28 mg g −1 and 643.92 mg g −1 has been achieved for 4000 mg L −1 concentration of PCs, respectively, for batch and fixed-bed column essays. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were consistent with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Therefore, the Thomas model best fits the fixed-bed column experimental data. The bio-sorbent gave a high desorption percentage of PCs, which was above 60% using HCl (0.1M).

Abstract:Activated carbon prepared from sawdust, an inexpensive biowaste of the wood industry, to remove Pb2+, Co2+, and Cd2+ ions from water solutions was examined in batch experiments. Batch studies were conducted to study the impact of some factors like pH, contact time, the metal ions concentration, and temperature on adsorption efficiency. The results indicated that the optimum conditions for Pb2+, Co2+, and Cd2+ ions removal at pH 6 and an equilibrium contact time of 90 min. Adsorption isotherms such as Freundlich and Langmuir were estimated. It is turned out that the sorption obeys the Langmuir model, and the extreme sorption capacity of Pb2+, Co2+, and Cd2+ was 50.65, 15.53, and 12.54 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic factors like ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG°, for sorption Pb2+, Co2+, and Cd2+ have been calculated. The thermodynamic data demonstrated that the sorption of metal ions endothermic and spontaneous. Desorption studies show that the used adsorbent may be regenerated in HCl and HNO3. The efficacy of the sorbent in the treatment of surface and groundwater metal ions and some organic pollutants has been investigated. The results revealed that the used adsorbent has been successful a promising material for treating some contaminants.

Characterizing and optimizing adsorption for olive mill wastewater processing in Loukkos, Morocco

Abstract:The present research consists of studying the characterization and treatment of the olive mill wastewater (OMWW) resulting from the olive industries of the region of Loukkos, Morocco. According to the national plan for green Morocco, the annual volumes of OMWW discharges increase with the expansion of the areas of olive plantations compared to agricultural activities. The study of the organic, mineral, and microbiological composition of the obtained OMWW showed that they are rich in microbiological (FMAT, Let M., and B.L.), mineral (total Kjeldhal nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, zinc, manganese, and lead ions), and organic (COD, BOD5, and polyphenols) micropollutants with very high percentages that are higher than the standards in force. The treatment used in this study is the combined process of aerated lagooning/adsorption using powdered activated carbon after optimization of the experimental parameters (mass concentration of activated carbon (AC) and agitation rapidity (Ar)) by experiment design method. The obtained physicochemical parameters, such as pH, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), rate of discoloration, and polyphenol content of raw OMWW, were 4.87, 0.63, 80.3, 0.8, and 1.45 g/l, respectively. The results of these parameters for the treated OMWW were obtained in the order of 6.10, 0.22, 28, 0.28, and 0.44 g/l for pH, TSS, COD, discoloration rate, and polyphenol content, respectively. These results show that the proposed treatment significantly reduced acidity, TSS, COD, discoloration rate, and polyphenol contents, with a performance of about 25.26, 65, 65.13, 65, and 69.65%, respectively. This indicates that there is significant performance in the processing of exploited OMWW.

Abstract:Currently, industrial water pollution represents a significant global challenge, with the potential to adversely impact human health and the integrity of ecosystems. The continuous increase in global consumption has resulted in an exponential rise in the use of dyes, which have become one of the major water pollutants, causing significant environmental impacts. In order to address these concerns, a number of wastewater treatment methods have been developed, with a particular focus on physicochemical approaches, such as adsorption. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of a bio-based material derived from olive oil pomace (OOP) as an environmentally friendly bio-adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB), a cationic dye commonly found in textile effluents. The biobased material was initially characterized by determining the point of zero charge (pHpzc) and using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis was conducted, evaluating the impact of specific physicochemical parameters on MB adsorption, which included a thorough examination of the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The adsorption process was characterized using Langmuir, Freundlich, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Dubinin Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms. The results suggest that the equilibrium of adsorption is achieved within ca. 200 min, following pseudo-second-order kinetics. The optimal conditions, including adsorbent mass, temperature, bulk pH, and dye concentration, yielded a maximum adsorption capacity of ca. 93% (i.e., 428 mg g−1) for a pomace concentration of 450 mg L−1. The results suggest a monolayer adsorption process with preferential electrostatic interactions between the dye and the pomace adsorbent. This is supported by the application of Langmuir, BET, Freundlich, and D-R isotherm models. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. This work presents a sustainable solution for mitigating MB contamination in wastewater streams while simultaneously valorizing OOP, an agricultural by-product that presents risks to human health and the environment. In conclusion, this approach offers an innovative ecological alternative to synthetic adsorbents.

Abstract:Novel sorbents were produced using sustainable and eco-friendly methods, aimed at minimizing environmental impact while utilizing industrial by-products and natural minerals. Olive stones and molasses derived from olive mill and sugar industries, respectively, and an abundant, natural and low-cost mineral, clinoptilolite, were combined in the following proportions: 80/20 clinoptilolite/stone, 80/10/10 clinoptilolite/stone/molasses, 50/50 stone/molasses, w/w. Then, physical carbonization (CL80OL20C, CL80OL10M10C, OL50M50C) or chemical activation (CL80OL20A, CL80OL10M10A, OL50M50A) took place. The adsorbents were characterized through Raman, FT-IR, BET and SEM-EDS analysis. The CL80OL20A material presents the highest ratio of C/O in EDS analysis and the lowest ID/IG in Raman spectroscopy. The increase in the specific surface area is as follows: OL50M50C < OL50M50A < CL80OL10M10C < CL80OL20C < CL80OL20A < CL80OL10M10A. Three applications were conducted: two with dyes (methylene blue and methyl red) in aqueous means and one in olive mill wastewaters for the removal of total phenols and their addition to rice, increasing the total phenolic content and producing novel foods. The well-fitted application of the pseudo-second order kinetic model to the experimental data has shown that chemisorption is the prevailing mechanism. The adsorbed amount of the recovered phenols to rice ranges from 0.14 to 0.93 mg/g. Consequently, olive and sugar by-products can be used as filters either to adsorb dangerous organic compounds or to recover bioactive compounds from wastewater, preventing their disposal in the environment, which could otherwise lead to severe negative effects on the ecosystems.

Detoxification of olive mill wastewater using superabsorbent polymers

Abstract:The detoxification of agro-industrial effluents using superabsorbent polymers is a new and innovative process. Olive mill wastewater constitutes a major environmental problem in Mediterranean countries due to the large volumes generated, the seasonality of the industry, and the high content of polyphenols and organic matter. The application of superabsorbent polymers allows olive mill wastewater to be used as a fertilizer, as it is immobilized, increasing the biological activity that decreases its phytotoxicity, thus making its water, organic matter and mineral content usable for plant nutrition. Various parameters that characterise olive mill wastewater were evaluated after absorption in 2 different superabsorbent polymers (SAP1 and SAP2). The organic matter was equally distributed in both phases, while there was a concentration of protein and sodium in solution. The K:Na ratio decreased from 70:1 to 2:1. The polyphenol desorption from the gel into solution was found to follow Fick's law. The mass transfer coefficients were 0.147 min(-1) and 0.0085 min(-1) for SAP1 and SAP2, respectively. Phytotoxicity tests were carried out with SAP2. Olive mill wastewater in SAP2 with polyphenol concentrations up to 200 mg l(-1) revealed no phytotoxicity, and even stimulated Lepidium sativum growth, while olive mill wastewater without superabsorbent polymer revealed growth inhibition for all concentrations tested. Caffeic acid degradation by the immobilised biomass followed zero order kinetics. Degradation constants of 0.087 mg l(-1) min(-1) gSAP2(-1) and 1.156 mg l(-1) min(-1) gSAP2(-1) were found. Fungi that developed in the plant growth medium were identified as Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp.

Abstract:Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis or "jodbasedow phenomenon" has been reported throughout the world since iodine has been administered to treat endemic goitre. Nowadays, iodinated radiocontrast agents and the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone are the most common sources of excess iodine load subsequently leading to iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, especially in elderly patients with underlying goitre. The aim of the study was to identify the number of cases of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis among patients with thyrotoxicosis in a large urban hospital. Over an 18-month period thyrotoxicosis has been diagnosed in a total of 39 patients. Eight patients with iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis (5 female, 3 male; mean age 60.6 years) have been identified (20%). In all patients with iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, iodine exposure with a mean iodine dose of 21.5 g was documented 2 to 16 weeks before diagnosis (iodinated radiocontrast agents in 5 patients, amiodarone in 2 patients, kelp tablets in 1 patient). Clinical features were predominantly tachyarrhythmias and heart failure, while 6 of 8 patients had goitre (thyroid volume 31 to 193 ml). Thyroid antibodies were not detected. Diagnosis was confirmed in 5 of 8 patients with increased urinary iodine concentrations (3436 to > 6000 nmol/24 h), and in 3 of 8 patients with a low tracer uptake in thyroid scintigraphy (1 to 4%). Treatment consisted of methimazole in all patients, additional tional beta-blockers and lithium in 4 patients, and prednisone in 5 patients. The mean treatment ment duration was 9.2 months, and patients became euthyroid after a mean treatment duration of 6.4 weeks. One patient (with still elevated free thyroxine levels) died of myocardial infarction 4 weeks after antithyroid drug therapy had been installed. The incidence, mechanisms and features of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis are discussed. Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis is a common disease, and the recognition and treatment of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, particularly in elderly patients and patients with goitre, are of clinical importance.

Abstract:A waste material known as palm oil empty fruit bunch (EFB) is used as a source of cellulose for the development of polymeric materials for the removal of metal ions from industrial wastewater. A poly(acrylonitrile)-grafted palm cellulose copolymer was synthesized by a conventional free radical initiating process followed by synthesis of a poly(amidoxime) ligand by oximation reaction. The resulting products were characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, TGA, DSC, and XPS. The poly(amidoxime) ligand was used to coordinate with and extract a series of transition metal ions from water samples. The binding capacity (qe) of the ligand with the metal ions such as copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, and lead were 260, 210, 168, 172, and 272 mg g-1, respectively at pH 6. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.99) and as well as the Freundlich isotherm model (R2 > 0.99) indicating the occurrence of a multi-layer adsorption process in the amidoxime ligand adsorbent. Results from reusability studies show that the ligand can be recycled for at least 10 cycles without any significant losses to its initial adsorption capacity. The synthesized polymeric ligand was shown to absorb heavy metals from electroplating wastewater with up to 95% efficiency.
Optimization of hybrid treatment of olive mill wastewaters through impregnation onto raw cypress sawdust and electrocoagulation

Abstract:This research investigation proposes a new method for sustainable olive mill wastewater (OMW) treatment and handling. It is based on the combination of its impregnation onto raw cypress sawdust (RCS) followed by electrocoagulation. The retention of OMW compounds onto various RCS doses show an important decrease of its chemical oxygen demand (COD) and its main cation and anion content. The maximum retention efficiencies of COD, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were about 51.0%, 75.3%, 28.7%, 77.9%, 84.7%, 41.1%, 98.3%, and 90.9%, respectively, for the highest RCS dose (200 g L-1). This organic matter- and nutrient-loaded biomass could be thermochemically converted through pyrolysis into biofuel and biochar for energetic and agronomic purposes, respectively. The treatment by electrocoagulation of the pre-treated OMW using mild steel electrodes could be considered an attractive treatment method since 75.6% of COD removal efficiency was achieved. Besides, this approach permits a significant energy consumption reduction by 46% as compared with the electrocoagulation process alone. It allows also a significant improvement of the treated effluent quality in terms of both organic and mineral contents that could be reused for the irrigation of olive trees in the context of circular economy.

Abstract:Abstract The study is carried out at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of an agricultural cooperative that operates according to the activated sludge process. Dairy industry is enlisted as one of the top-most industries in the food industry. Dairy wastewater treatment is a big issue as dairy wastewater releases a high amount of chemical oxygen demand, inorganic and organic particles, biological oxygen demand, and nutrients. But, these processes partly degrade wastewater containing fats and nutrients as dairy wastewater. The aim of this study was to evaluate the purification performance of this treatment process. The qualitative analysis of decanted raw wastewater (DRWW) and purified wastewater (PWW) shows that the concentration of orthophosphate, nitrate and sulfate ions is slightly higher. Such contaminated water if not handled appropriately, it pollutes water bodies and largely affects our ecosystem and biodiversity. Hence, our proposal is to improve the WWTP performances by using the adsorption process onto dried Carpobrotus edulis as an inert biomaterial. This adsorption process is recognized as one of the best water treatment techniques, more and more works are oriented towards the search for new materials, cheaper and having a good adsorbent potential. This study opens the path for the use of natural and abundant local material to remove orthophosphate, nitrate and sulfate ions using the C. edulis plant particles shred. The surface micromorphology of the biomaterial was investigated using a scanning electron microscope; while the qualitative element composition was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray and infrared spectroscopies. The found results of DRWW was about 57% for orthophosphates, 67% for sulfates and 73% for nitrates ions. For PWW, the percentage removal was found to be 62%, 73% and 84% for orthophosphates, sulfates and nitrates respectively. These results indicate that dried C. edulis plant, as an environmentally friendly adsorbent could be recommended for the removal of mineral pollutants. In conclusion, the C. edulis adsorbent can be integrated into the activated sludge process for wastewater treatment after identifying the optimal hydraulic loads, associated sizes, and shapes in continuous operations.

Abstract:The olive stone is a large waste product of the olive oil extraction industry. The present study investigates developing activated carbon from olive stone waste (OSAC) to remove pharmaceuticals from water. Different temperatures and olive stone: KOH ratios were studied. The OSAC produced at 750 °C and 1:3 ratio was found to have the highest porosity and surface area and was tested in the adsorption process. Diclofenac and ciprofloxacin were selected as model contaminants. The adsorption process was optimized with regards to OSAC dosage, pH, temperature, and initial concentration of adsorbate. The OSAC was found to be effective for a wide pH range (2–11) with an optimum dosage of 1 g/L at 25 °C. The pharmaceuticals were almost completely removed in 75 min. The adsorption was endothermic and followed first-order kinetics with physical mechanisms such as electrostatic possibly being the main driver. The optimum conditions were applied to test the removal of diclofenac and ciprofloxacin in synthetic water, lake water (Lake Balaton, Hungary) and secondary wastewater for seven cycles. There was little difference between the removal of the tested water matrices highlighting the potency of OSAC as an adsorbent for pharmaceutical removal in industrial applications. The removal dropped from >99% for the first cycle to 20–30% for the seventh cycle.

Abstract:Table olive processing wastewaters constitute a dangerous environmental problem in the Mediterranean countries because of their large volumes, high organic matter and salt concentration. The quantity and the characteristics of wastewaters produced, and thus, their environmental impact, varied depending on the season, varieties, soil and process employed. Several chemicals, biological and combined technologies have proven effective at bringing down organic pollution and toxicity of these effluents. Advanced oxidation processes have recognized as highly efficient treatments for the degradation of organic matter. Nonetheless, complete mineralization is generally expensive without salt removal. Biological processes are the most environmentally compatible and least-expensive treatment methods, but these operations do not always provide satisfactory results. This article surveys the current available technologies and suggests an effective, cheaper alternative for the recycling and the valorization of green table olives wastewaters.

Abstract:The rising demand for olive oil worldwide led to an increase of oil production, causing an undesired side-effect such as the huge quantity of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) and leaf waste, which represent a serious problem in agriculture. The present work aims to recycle these wastes and use them as fertilizer in nurseries for young olive trees. Hence, three treatments of OMWW were used: i) Photocatalytic treatment (PT) by silicon dioxide nanoparticles; ii) Biological treatment (BT) by olive leaves and iii) a combination of both biological and photocatalytic treatments (CT). The obtained results showed that BT and PT, when used separately, reduced the phenolic content (PC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), compared to raw OMWW. Interestingly, by combining both treatments, the removal rate of PC and COD reached 78% and 66%, respectively. Following the amendment of young olive trees by treated OMWW, plants growth and morphology, photosynthetic machinery and antioxidant capacity were improved compared to those amended with raw OMWW, with the best values observed under CT. In conclusion, CT allowed the bioremediation of two olive by-products that are useful as biofertilizer for olive young plants in a short period of time and at low cost.

Abstract:To date, treated olive mill wastewater (OMW) remains expensive and challenging due to its acidity and high levels of hazardous compounds, which cause significant environmental concerns. Consequently, it is crucial to develop an eco-cleaner and effective method for treating OMW. Herein, the novel immobilization of Yarrowia lipolytica within a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/agar matrix was prepared as a bio-tool to enhance OMW treatment. The immobilized Y. lipolytica was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results indicated that the immobilized Y. lipolytica significantly improved removal efficiencies, reducing 88.6% of COD, 98.05% of TKN, 92.64% of turbidity, 75% of lipids, and 32.08% of PO4 −3 after 72 h. Interestingly, the removal efficiency increased upon reusing immobilized cells for three cycles, reaching 93.33%, 100%, and 98.73% for COD, TKN, PO4 −3, and turbidity, respectively, after 72 h, along with valuable biomass production of 7.31 g L−1. Furthermore, correlation analysis and predictive modelling confirmed the effectiveness and recyclability of this process.

Abstract:In this work, we presented a synthesis of a composite based on HAp and PEG 6000 using a new method of synthesis dissolution precipitation to be applied for application of wastewater purification from toxic metal ions. Multiple characterization methods were used to analyze the morphology and the structure of the well-prepared compounds including FT-IR, Raman, XRD, XPS, TGA and SEM were used to conduct a composite analysis. The adsorption effectiveness of this analysis towards Pb 2+ and various other hazardous metal ions found in sewage was assessed. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize the various operational parameters including adsorbent dose, temperature, pH, contact time, and initial concentration. The Langmuir isotherm was used to fit the data, and it predicted monolayer adsorption with a maximum capacity of 67 mg g −1 for HAP PEG600 and 60 mg g −1 for HAp. A pseudo-second-order equation fits the adsorption process well (0.961–0.971). The thermodynamic data support the spontaneous metal bonding to the composite receptor sites. Theoretical calculations showed that the interaction strength is very strong and gets stronger when the PEG6000 is deprotonated. The results presented here are supported by evidence acquired from experiments. Theoretical computation using Monte Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation models showed excellent affinity of prepared foams for the model ion Pb 2+ with highly negative adsorption energy values indicating vigorous interactions of Pb 2+ with the adsorbate surfaces.
