Abstract:Rapid urbanization and irrational land use seriously threaten ecological security. Quantitative analysis optimization of ecological security patterns (ESPs) could ensure the sustainable development of ecosystems. Identifying of ecological sources' thresholds and corridors is a difficult task. An integrated framework and analytical method are proposed here based on Geographic Information System (GIS) software, Python language, and a minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model to construct and quantitatively analyze ESPs. The model includes the following functions: (1) the delimitation of ecological patches by assessing regional habitat quality; (2) identification of ecological sources using patch numbers (PNs), proportional area, and a landscape connectivity index; (3) identification of a resistance surface coefficient with a night light index; and (4) extraction of key ecological corridors and nodes using a modified multiprocess and batch processing flow of MCR. Habitat quality was classed at middle and high levels, the minimum area threshold of ecological sources was 2 km2, and urban areas and highways were the main obstacles to sustainable development. Potential key ecological corridors were extracted. The method can provide technical support for regional infrastructure planning, landscape optimization, and regional development. Construction and Optimization of Ecological Security Patterns Based on Ecosystem Services in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area

Abstract:Rapid urbanization has affected ecosystem stability, and the construction of ecological security patterns (ESPs) can rationally allocate resources and achieve ecological protection. Priority evaluation of critical areas can maximize the benefits of ecological protection, which is crucial for sustainable urban development. However, most prior studies have focused on assessing individual elements of the ESP, rarely considering both the protection priority of ecological sources and corridors. We constructed ESPs for the Wuhan Metropolitan Area (WMA) from 2000 to 2020 and evaluated the priority of ecological sources and corridors for protection. The findings indicated that high-level ecological sources exhibited higher overall landscape connectivity and ecosystem service values with lower patch fragmentation. The average area proportions of primary, secondary, and tertiary ecological sources in 2000, 2010, and 2020 were 41.11%, 23.03%, and 29.86%, respectively. High-level ecological corridors had shorter lengths and offered higher comprehensive ecosystem service values. The total length of secondary corridors exceeded that of primary corridors by 1951.19 km, 650.39 km, and 2238.18 km in 2000, 2010, and 2020, respectively. Primary corridors, which connected fragmented and isolated sources, should have their ecological land percentage increased to enhance connectivity. Secondary corridors connected two independent and distant sources, providing the basis for ecological protection in the intervening area, whose surrounding habitats should be protected. This study identifies the ecological protection priority and offers a theoretical basis and practical reference for balancing urban development with ecological protection.

Abstract:Regional ecological security pattern (ESP) can provide the basis for regional territorial spatial planning and urban ecological protection. Taking the Wuhan metropolitan area as the study area, a binary logistic regression model was used to quantify the evolutionary driving forces and transformation risk of ecological land. An identification framework of ecological source based on "quality-risk-demand" was constructed to identify ecological source by calculating the ecological land comprehensive value from three aspects of ecological land quality, degradation risk, and human demand. The ecological resistance surface was calculated according to land-use type and nighttime light data, further using circuit theory to identify the spatial range and its key areas of ecological corridors, and to identify the specific spatial range of ESP and their priority area. The results showed ecological sources were 382.4 km 2 , accounting for 17.3% of the metropolitan area. The area of ecological corridors in the terrestrial ecosystem (TEC) was 14.38 km 2 , with an average width of 77.8 m, including 4.99 km 2 of pinch points and 3.71 km 2 of barriers, indicating poor actual connectivity of the TEC. Ecological corridors in the aquatic ecosystem (AEC) were 107.67 km long, including 57.86 km of pinch points and 14.24 km of barriers, indicating poor substitutability of the AEC. Overall, the ESP of "three horizontals, three verticals, and four clusters" were identified, where sources, pinch points and barriers were the priority areas for protection and restoration in constructing it. Existing protection spaces were within the ecological source range, and the identification results of the ecological corridor were highly consistent with the actual situation, verifying the ecological significance of the identification framework. This study focuses on the needs of urban residents, combining the intrinsic quality and extrinsic risks of urban ecological land, proposes an integrated framework for identifying urban ecological sources, identifies the spatial range of ecological corridors and their key areas based on circuit theory, and attempts to provide a quantitative framework and case reference for ESP construction in other urban areas.

Abstract:The continued sprawl of modern cities can often threaten urban ecological space, and sustainable landscape patterns should be considered in urban landscape planning. The construction of ecological security patterns (ESPs) is regarded as an effective way to integrate landscape patterns and ecosystem services in an ecological connectivity perspective. Based on the content of ecological sources, pattern structures and barrier points from circuit theory, we aimed to improve the urban ecological space of central Wuhan City through ESP scenarios. Three ESP scenarios were developed to optimize the urban ecological spaces: the 1st, involved increasing the ecological sources; the 2nd, increasing the circle structures; and the 3rd, repairing the barrier points. The results showed that the current ESPs identified 17 ecological sources, which were primarily situated on the periphery of the city and included 760.152 km of ecological corridors (38 paths) and 39 barrier points. The 2nd scenario that was regarded as the best approach for Wuhan enhanced the resistance to outside interference and stability, with 17 ecological sources and 681.244 km ecological corridors (37 paths), and had the lowest cost of protection compared with the other two scenarios, as well as the current pattern in central Wuhan. This work methodologically contributed to the different methods including increasing the ecological sources, increasing the circle structure and repairing the barrier points for urban ecological space planning, and practically provided the best scenario to enhancing the urban ecological for landscape management.

Abstract:Ecological Security Patterns (ESPs) are important nature-based solutions for ecological problems caused by urbanization and industrialization. Previous studies on ESPs focus on natural conditions only, yet do not incorporate the need for social equity. This study aims to address this quandary for the study area of Wuhan by identifying and extracting ecological sources and ecological corridors, followed by an ecological sensitivity assessment, minimum cumulative resistance model and buffer analysis, in order to construct and optimize ecological security patterns. The optimization for the construction of the most suitable ecological security patterns relies on social equity aspects, including the quality of urban ecological services and the improvement of the well-being of urban residents. The results demonstrate: (1) There are 19 ecological sources in Wuhan and 51 ecological corridors with a total length of 840.10 km. (2) To cater for the optimization of social equity needs, it was necessary to add one additional amendment source, with an area of 14.89 km2, and 25 new amendment corridors with a total length of 287.8 km. (3) Optimizing the ecological security patterns in Wuhan is possible through the derivation of an ecological restoration area, ecological improvement area, ecological control area and ecological shield area. The results indicate the feasibility of simultaneously protecting urban ecological security and realizing social equity.

Abstract:Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. Preserving the ecological security of wetlands is critically important for regional environmental protection and sustainable development. However, in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle, which is rapidly urbanizing, its wetlands are more susceptible to external natural environmental risks, such as changes in temperature and rainfall, as well as risks to human activity, such as social and economic activities, urban expansion, land use changes, and population growth. Meanwhile, the internal vulnerability of wetlands in terms of their spatial extent, structure, and functions also exacerbates ecological risks. These factors collectively influence the formation and development of wetland ecological risks. This study aims to comprehensively assess wetland ecological risks in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle by combining external hazards and internal vulnerabilities and to construct and optimize the wetlands' ecological security pattern. We used the MSPA method to identify potential ecological sources. Additionally, the MCR model was employed to integrate ecological risk assessment results into the resistance surface, identify potential ecological corridors and nodes, construct the wetland ecological security pattern for the urban circle, and propose specific optimization strategies. In total, 31 primary and 106 secondary ecological sources were selected, along with 20 primary and 42 secondary ecological nodes. Furthermore, 10 major ecological corridors were constructed. Considering the landscape characteristics of the wetlands in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle, the southern Yangtze River region will center around the Liangzi Lake group to establish a crucial corridor network, promoting overall wetland restoration and connectivity. Meanwhile, the northern Yangtze River region will form a chain-like distribution along the river, creating diverse ecosystems. This study provides a theoretical foundation for constructing and optimizing the ecological security pattern of wetlands, laying a solid groundwork for promoting regional wetland conservation and sustainable development.

Abstract:Protected areas (PAs) play a key role in mitigating ecological crises. Currently, priority protected areas (PPAs) focus on biological conservation, and a few studies have considered the connectivity between patches. Few studies have formulated future conservation measures from the two dimensions of ecological security pattern (ESP) and reserve effectiveness. To fill this gap, this study considered the use of the ESP to identify areas that meet future conservation objectives. We take the Wuhan metropolitan area as the research area. We constructed a framework for formulating conservation development plans based on priority protected areas. The framework constructed a complete method system, and we focused on the construction of the evaluation index system based on landscape connectivity. Then, the effectiveness of the PAs could be evaluated, and the PPAs could be identified. The results showed that there were five isolated PAs among the existing PAs. Moreover, the total area of PPAs was 9328.91 km2, and they had high connectivity and ecological value. Due to the low protection rate of PPAs, PPAs are not the main protection target of PAs; thus, we take PPAs as a new area of future PAs. According to our plan, PPAs with different classes will achieve different functions in future protection work. Our framework focuses on achieving sustainable conservation and formulates new environmental protection and land planning measures to balance ecological conservation and urban development. It can provide key information to support the realization of the 2030 vision of sustainable development.

Abstract:The urban agglomerations' rapid expansion and population growth have led to the fragmentation of landscape patterns and the degradation of ecosystems, seriously threatening regional ecological security. Ecological security pattern (ESP) is a spatial planning approach to effectively balance the development of urbanization and ecological protection. However, previous studies have ignored the difference in the importance of ecosystem services and the spatial compactness of ecological sources. The quantitative management objectives for maintaining the resilience of ESP are also rarely discussed. In this study, taking the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as an example, ecological sources were identified by simulating multiple ES weight assignment scenarios through GeoSOS area optimization. Ecological corridors and strategic points were extracted by Linkage Mapper. The robustness analysis based on complex network theory was performed to quantify the management objectives of ESPs. The results showed that ESPs include 26,130.61 km2 ecological sources (accounting for 46.6% of the area of GBA), 557 ecological corridors, and 112 ecological strategic points. In more detail, ecological sources are mainly distributed in the western and eastern mountainous areas, and ecological corridors primarily link peripheral edge areas of GBA in a circular radial shape. Compared with the current nature reserves, the identified ecological sources are more compact in landscape pattern. According to the robustness analysis, at least 23% of the important ecological sources should be strictly restricted from development activities to maintain the ESP's ability to resist ecological risks. This study also proposed corresponding differentiated ESPs management strategies. By optimizing the existing ESPs construction method and clarifying the ESPs management strategies, this study provides a completely scientific framework for the construction and management of ESPs in urban agglomerations.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization is often accompanied by the irrational utilization of natural resources and environmental degradation. Ecological security pattern (ESP) is an effective way for rational allocation of resources, which is conducive to achieving sustainable development. Taking the central urban area Chongqing municipality as the study area, ecological sources were identified by integrating ecosystem services and landscape connectivity. Combining natural and anthropogenic factors, a resistance surface was constructed and modified, and four ecological function zones were determined. Ecological corridors were extracted and prioritized by Linkage Mapper and the gravity model, and ecological nodes were also obtained. A network connectivity assessment was performed to compare the connectivity of ESPs before and after optimization. The results showed that ESPs included 2453.72 km2 of ecological sources, 189 ecological corridors, 69 ecological nodes and 4 ecological function zones. The ecological sources primarily consisted of forestland, cultivated land and water bodies in Jinyun, Zhongliang, Tongluo, Mingyue and other mountainous areas, with the maximum distribution index value at the tenth level of the terrain niche index gradient. The Yangtze River and Jialing River were also the most important ecological sources. Ecological corridors were mainly dominated by forestland and cultivated land. Ecological nodes were concentrated in Yubei, Banan and Jiulongpo districts. The optimized ESPs had higher network connectivity and closure, with a more uniform distribution of ecological corridors, and included 2461.95 km2 of ecological sources, 218 ecological corridors and 72 ecological nodes. Finally, recommendations for sustainable development were proposed. This study provides a theoretical reference for decision-making related to ecological protection and urban planning.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The continuous expansion of modern cities not only leads to ecological degradation but also seriously threatens regional ecological security and sustainable development. The construction of ecological security patterns (ESPs) has emerged as a significant approach to alleviate or even solve the conflict between regional development and ecological protection. The Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle (CCEC) represents the core area of regional economic development strategy in western China, characterized by rapid economic growth from 2000 to 2020. This study integrates assessments of ecosystem services importance, eco-environmental sensitivity and landscape connectivity; uses circuit theory and hydrological analysis to establish a research framework for the spatiotemporal evolution of regional ESP; and develops an optimized ESP combined with the Major Function Oriented Zone. The results indicate that urban expansion significantly impacted the ESP of the CCEC between 2000 and 2020. The fragmentation and merging of ecological sources occurred simultaneously, the number of patches reduced by 28.13% from 64 to 46. The early ecological security network was compromised, leading to the disappearance or elongation of some ecological corridors. The number of ecological corridors decreased by 36.03% from 136 to 87; the total length was reduced by 29.92% from 7500.57 km to 5256.28 km. Urgent optimization of the ESP is needed, reducing the number of key ecological protection areas by 50% from 106 to 53 while increasing priority restoration areas by 13.51% from 37 to 42. The study also reveals the insufficiency of the current Major Function Oriented Zone in protecting linear corridors, necessitating focused attention on the protection and restoration of ecological sources and surrounding corridors in important development zones. Additionally, a spatial optimization strategy of "one shelter, two cores, and three regions" is proposed to enhance regional ecosystem stability and connectivity. The aim was to strike a balance between ecological protection and food security by recommending an ecological corridor width range of 30∼100 m. These research findings offer scientific guidance for ecological space protection and restoration in the CCEC, contributing to the enhancement of both scientific and rational ecological planning in rapidly urbanizing areas.

Abstract:The construction of an ecological security pattern (ESP) is an effective approach to addressing ecological concerns in urban agglomerations. However, previous research has often overlooked the ecological characteristics at different spatial scales, making it difficult to effectively tackle environmental issues. This study focuses on the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration (CZXUA) to construct an ESP from 2 scales: the urban agglomeration and the metropolitan area. First, ecological sources at different scales were identified and optimized using morphological spatial pattern analysis, ecosystem service supply assessment, landscape connectivity evaluation, and ecological demand intensity analysis. Next, spatial principal component analysis was employed to analyze resistance factors across different spatial scales, enabling the construction of a multi-scale landscape resistance surface. Finally, multi-scale ecological corridors were extracted using circuit theory, and the ecological corridors passing through the central urban area were optimized. As a result, 176 ecological sources, 337 ecological corridors, 60 ecological pinch points, and 30 ecological barrier points were identified, forming the overall ESP for the CZXUA. Furthermore, an ecological protection and optimization pattern, described as “One River, Seven Waters, One Heart, and Eight Wedges”, was proposed based on the ESP. This pattern highlights pivotal areas for ecological protection and restoration within the national land space. This study provides a comprehensive example of constructing a multi-scale ecological corridor network and identifying critical areas for ecological protection and restoration. The findings can serve as a reference for special ecological protection planning in urban agglomerations.

Abstract:Ecological security pattern (ESP) is an effective way to integrate landscape patterns and ecological processes from the perspective of ecological connectivity. Its scientific construction can promote the coordinated development of social system and ecosystem. However, the construction methods of ESP still need to be explored, most studies assume that different ecological processes do not interfere with each other, and then spatial overlay different types of ecosystem services to determine the ecological source. Metropolitan area is an important space carrier for the high-quality development of Chinese urban agglomeration. Taking Shenzhen metropolitan area as the target area, we identified ecological sources according to the ecosystem services trade-offs and ecological sensitivity assessment system and OWA algorithm, revised the basic resistance surface by using the night light data, and simulated and extracted ecological corridors by combining the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model and potential model. We identified 13 important ecological sources with a total area of 9938.23.23 km 2 . The spatial distribution of them was concentrated in Huizhou and Shanwei, as well as the junctions of mountain woodlands in Huizhou, Heyuan, and Shanwei. Notably, 66 ecological corridors were simulated, including 26 important and 40 general corridors. The ecological corridors generally exhibited a spider web radial distribution with substantial spatial heterogeneity and were densely distributed in the suburbs and northern hilly regions far from urban areas. Aggregated ecological elements were used to build a comprehensive ESP for the Shenzhen metropolitan area, which comprises 13 ecological sources, 26 important ecological corridors, 40 general ecological corridors, 4 security levels of resistance surface, and 24 ecological strategic nodes. This study comprehensively considered the ecosystem services interactions and the environmental sensitivity of ecological processes, provided an effective quantitative framework for constructing the ESP, and the results can provide decision-making reference for territorial ecological protection and restoration planning of Shenzhen metropolitan area.

Abstract:The frequent occurrence of floods in urban areas caused by climate change challenges urban resilience. This research aims to construct an ecological security pattern (ESP) that is adaptive to floods to enhance urban resilience in the hope that it will help cities cope with floods better. In this research, the main urban area of Wuhan (WUH) represents the study area. The lakes were selected as the ecological sources and the Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) model was used to calculate the runoff volume corresponding to each land type and, based on this, assign resistance values to the land types; as such, the land type surface is referred to as the runoff resistance surface, and the runoff resistance surface is then modified by ecosystem service capabilities. The Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model was used to extract the connecting corridors between the sources. This research plan includes 18 ecological sources, 10 key ecological corridors, and 22 potential ecological corridors, with a total length of about 344.21 km. Finally, it provides a two-axis and three-core urban ecological resilience optimization strategy for decision makers and a new approach for controlling floods in urban areas from the perspective of ecological resilience.

Abstract:With little consideration of both natural and social disturbance in previous studies on Ecological security patterns (ESPs), the identification of conservation priority areas is not accurate enough to enhance the structure and quality of the ecosystem for regional ecological security. To address this gap, this study developed a novel framework of "importance-connectivity-disturbance " to identify ESPs, selecting the Pearl River Delta (PRD) as the study area. Ecological sources were identified by combing ecological importance and landscape connectivity. A more integrated ecological resistance was developed to represent natural and social disturbance, and applied to obtain levels of regional ecological security. Ecological corridors were then extracted and classified using the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model and gravity model. The results showed that 9645.77 km(2) of ecological sources and 72 potential ecological corridors were determined, and the region with the higher security grade accounted for 19.18% of the entire area. The optimized ESPs of "one ring, two cores, three zones, and four axes " was developed based on key components of ESPs and local socioeconomic conditions. This study provides a novel perspective on the methodology of identifying ESPs and an essential reference for ecological protection and regional development planning in urban agglomerations.

Abstract:In China, the Huang-Huai Plain and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, which are populated with numerous small and medium-sized cities, have emerged as critical regions for future urbanization. As a result, these regions face significant ecological risks due to this rapid urbanization. This study employs the concept of the ecological security pattern (ESP), which synergizes landscape patterns and ecological processes by emphasizing ecological connectivity. This integration facilitates a balance between ecosystem protection and economic development. Utilizing Suizhou as a case study, a framework for establishing an ESP in rapidly urbanizing small and medium-sized cities is proposed, with the aim of addressing the ecological challenges posed by rapid urbanization. A principal component of this framework involves optimizing the identification of ecological sources. The ordered weighted average (OWA) method was used to accurately pinpoint areas of significant ecological services while considering necessary trade-offs. Furthermore, the ecological sensitivity and landscape connectivity were integrated to identify ecological sources. Subsequently, ecological corridors, totaling an area of 416.08 km 2 and a length of 211.43 km, were delineated using circuit theory. In Suizhou, extensive urban development, particularly in the central area, has notably disrupted the ecological continuity between the northern and southern regions. A multifactorial superposition analysis was conducted to locate potential ecological sources and identify prevalent ecological issues, leading to the formulation of targeted strategies for resolution. If certain potential areas are modeled as optimized ecological sources, it is projected that the number of ecological sources will increase to 46, covering an area of 3090.4 km 2 ; the length of ecological corridors will also increase to 799.8 km. This expansion will significantly enhance both network density and corridor connectivity. Therefore, the development of green infrastructure is recommended to improve ecological sensitivity and resilience in urbanized areas. Additionally, a focus on enhancing ecological bottleneck areas within corridors to facilitate species connectivity is emphasized. The approach and findings of this study have broad implications for other rapidly urbanizing small and medium-sized cities.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The construction of an ecological security pattern (ESP) is an important way to ensure regional ecological security and to achieve sustainable regional development. It is also one of the hotspot topics of landscape ecology research. This paper identifies the ecological source through the evaluation of the ecosystem service and ecosystem sensitivity of the Lanzhou-Xining (Lan-Xi) urban agglomeration. The minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model modified by night light data NPP/VIIRS (National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) was used to measure the relative resistance of the materials and energy circulation between the source areas, and to establish the resistance surface of the ecological source area expansion. Then ecological corridors were identified based on ecological sources and resistance surface. The ecological strategic node is the ecological fragile point in the ecological corridors. The ecological strategic node is identified with hydrological module by superimposing the "ridge line" of cumulative ecological resistance with the ecological corridor. Combined with ecological sources, corridors and strategic nodes, the ESP of the Lan-Xi urban agglomeration can be constructed. The ecological source of the Lan-Xi urban agglomeration accounts for 28.42% of the total area, most of which is distributed within Qinghai Province. The nature reserves in the area are all located within the ecological source area. A total of 41 potential ecological corridors have been identified in the study area. The total length of the potential corridors is 1201.03 km, comprising 23 source corridors and 18 radiation corridors. There are 30 strategic nodes identified in the Lan-Xi urban agglomeration. These locations are the most vulnerable areas of the ecological corridors. Ecological engineering should be applied in the construction of corridors. Affected by the ecological source, the potential ecological corridor extends from the northwest to the southeast, which is basically consistent with the direction trend of the mountains in the region.</p>

Abstract:Introduction: With the acceleration of urbanization, human population and built surface in urban areas have increased rapidly, triggering numerous environmental problems. Identification of ecological security pattern (ESP) can be helpful to optimize the interaction and relationship between ecological conservation and socioeconomic development in a given region. In this study, taking Chengdu City as an example, a methodology was used to analyze the city's ESP. Methodology: Ecological sources were identified based on their ecological security values, which were derived from the spatio-temporal evaluation of ecosystem services and ecological health. The ecological resistance surface was revised with nighttime light index. Linkage Mapper combined with circuit theory was used to extracted ecological corridors and key ecological nodes. Results:: The results showed that the mean values of ecological security in Chengdu City presented a downward and then upward trend from 2000 to 2018. In 2018, the ESP in Chengdu City was formed by 140 ecological sources with the total area of 8,819.78 km 2 , 302 ecological corridors with the area of 456.91 km 2 , as well as 61 pinch-points and 17 barrier points. The ecological sources in Chengdu City were mainly distributed in or nearby Longmen Mountain and Longquan Mountain, two flanks of the Chengdu Plain, and connected each other with hundreds of ecological corridors. Most of ecological sources and corridors were composited of forests in mountainous areas and linpan units (wooded lots) in rural plain areas. On the contrary, pinch-points and barrier points were mainly distributed in the districts nearby the metropolitan urban center. Conclusion: Finally, this study proposed that constructing ESP must adopt a dynamic and holistic approach in considering the change of restoring ecosystems, shift of urban demands for ecosystem services and transformation of urban-rural land use/cover. Restoring and managing corridors sustainably are important for improving the ecological connectivity of all over ecological sources in a city, all of which together, if functioning well, could further support the realization of sustainable urbanization.

Abstract:The comprehensive application of ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk index (ERI) assessment can provide better decision support for regional ecological environment protection. Based on the remote sensing image data of Wuhu city of 1995, 2005 and 2016, the paper analyzed the spatial-temporal evolution of ESV and ERI in Wuhu city and its associated characteristics using an ESV, ERI assessments and a bivariate spatial autocorrelation method. The results showed that (1) the total ESV of Wuhu city continued to decline from 1995 to 2016, with a decrease of US$ 363.664 million. The total ESV per unit area of the sampling plot decreased, and the high-value was mainly distributed in areas within 5–10 km along the Yangtze River floodplain. (2) Wuhu city was mainly dominated by a relatively low ERI and medium ERI from 1995 to 2016. The high-value areas were mainly distributed in the mainstream of the Yangtze River, and the overall ERI improved. (3) There was a positive spatial correlation between the total ESV per unit area and ERI in Wuhu city, and these areas were mainly distributed in the Yangtze River mainstream region. According to this research, it is necessary to pay attention to the protection of wetland and forest landscapes, strengthen wetland ecological protection based on the Yangtze River and protect and restore natural mountain forests, all of which play important roles in improving the ecosystem service function of Wuhu city and protecting the ecological environment of the Yangtze River. We should act on that knowledge, and produce effective environmental regulations and habitat restoration efforts that improve the ESV and reduce the ERI. The findings of the study can serve as a reference for the management and protection of ecological environments in river-crossing cities.

Multi-scenario analysis and optimization strategy of ecological security pattern in the Weihe river basin

Abstract:For many years, the Weihe River Basin (WRB) has struggled to achieve a balance between ecological protection and economic growth. Constructing an Ecological Security Pattern (ESP) is extremely important for ensuring ecological security (ES). This study employed a coupling of multi-objective programming (MOP) and the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model to project land use change (LUCC) in 2040 across three scenarios. Leveraging circuit theory, we generated ecological corridors and identified key ecological nodes, enabling a comparative analysis of ESPs within the WRB. The main results showed that: (1) The Ecological Protection (EP) scenario showed the highest proportions of forestland, grassland, and water, indicating an optimal ecological environment. Conversely, the Economic Development (ED) scenario features the greatest proportion of construction land, particularly evident in the rapid urban expansion. The Natural Development (ND) scenario exhibits a more balanced change, aligning closely with historical trends. (2) The ecological source areas in the EP scenario is 13,856.70 km2, with the largest and most intact patch area. The ecological source patches that have been identified in the ED scenario exhibit fragmentation and dispersion, encompassing a total area of 8018.82 km2. The ecological source areas in the ND scenario is most similar to the actual situation in 2020, encompassing 8474.99 km2. (3) The EP scenario demonstrates minimal landscape fragmentation. The ED scenario presents a more intricate corridor pattern, hindering species and energy flow efficiency. The ND scenario is more similar to the actual distribution in 2020. Protecting and restoring key ecological nodes, and ensuring the integrity and connectivity of ecological sources are crucial for ESP optimization in various scenarios. Combining all results, we categorize the WRB's spatial pattern into "three zones, three belts, and one center" and offer strategic suggestions for ecological preservation, promoting sustainable local ecological and socioeconomic development.

Abstract:Urban agglomerations have become a new geographical unit in China, breaking the administrative fortresses between cities, which means that the population and economic activities between cities will become more intensive in the future. Constructing and optimizing the ecological security pattern of urban agglomerations is important for promoting harmonious social-economic development and ecological protection. Using the Harbin-Changchun urban agglomeration as a case study, we have identified ecological sources based on the evaluation of ecosystem functions. Based on the resistance surface modified by nighttime light (NTL) data, the potential ecological corridors were identified using the least-cost path method, and key ecological corridors were extracted using the gravity model. By combining 15 ecological sources, 119 corridors, 3 buffer zones, and 77 ecological nodes, the ecological security pattern (ESP) was constructed. The main land-use types composed of ecological sources and corridors are forest land, cultivated land, grassland, and water areas. Some ecological sources are occupied by construction, while unused land has the potential for ecological development. The ecological corridors in the central region are distributed circularly and extend to southeast side in the form of tree branches with the Songhua River as the central axis. Finally, this study proposes an optimizing pattern with "four belts, four zones, one axis, nine corridors, ten clusters and multi-centers" to provide decision makers with spatial strategies with respect to the conflicts between urban development and ecological protection during rapid urbanization.
