Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Abstract:We study the mixed-type classical dynamics of the three-particle Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) model in relationship with its quantum counterpart and present new results on aspects of quantum chaos in this system. First we derive for the general N -particle FPUT system the transformation to the normal mode representation. Then we specialize to the three-particle FPUT case and derive analytically the semiclassical energy density of states, and its derivatives in which different singularies are determined, using the Thomas-Fermi rule. The result agrees with the numerical energy density from the Krylov subspace method, as well as with the energy density obtained by the method of quantum typicality. Here, in paper I, we concentrate on the energy level statistics (level spacing and spacing ratios), in all classical dynamical regimes of interest: the almost entirely regular, the entirely chaotic, and the mixed-type regimes. We clearly confirm, correspondingly, the Poissonian statistics, the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble statistics, and the Berry-Robnik-Brody (BRB) statistics in the mixed-type regime. It is found that the BRB level spacing distribution perfectly fits the numerical data. The extracted quantum Berry-Robnik parameter is found to agree with the classical value within better than one percent. Abstract:We undertake a thorough investigation into the phenomenology of quantum eigenstates, in the three-particle FPUT model. Employing different Husimi functions, our study focuses on both the $\alpha$-type, which is canonically equivalent to the celebrated Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian, a nonintegrable and mixed-type system, and the general case at the saddle energy where the system is fully chaotic. Based on Husimi quantum surface of sections (QSOS), we find that in the mixed-type system, the fraction of mixed eigenstates in an energy shell $[E-\delta E/2, E+\delta E/2]$ with $\delta E\ll E$ shows a power-law decay with respect to the decreasing Planck constant $\hbar$. Defining the localization measures in terms of the Rényi-Wehrl entropy, in both the mixed-type and fully chaotic systems, we find a better fit with the beta distribution and a lesser degree of localization, in the distribution of localization measures of chaotic eigenstates, as the controlling ratio $\alpha_\mathcal{L} = t_H /t_T$ between the Heisenberg time $t_H$ and the classical transport time $t_T$ increases. This transition with respect to $\alpha_\mathcal{L}$ and the power-law decay of the mixed states, together provide supporting evidence for the principle of uniform semiclassical condensation (PUSC) in the semiclassical limit. Moreover, we find that in the general case which is fully chaotic, the maximally localized state, is influenced by the stable and unstable manifold of the saddles (hyperbolic fixed points), while the maximally extended state notably avoids these points, extending across the remaining space, complementing each other.

Quasiperiodicity in the $α-$Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem revisited: an approach using ideas from wave turbulence

Abstract:The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) problem addresses fundamental questions in statistical physics, and attempts to understand the origin of recurrences in the system have led to many great advances in nonlinear dynamics and mathematical physics. In this work we revisit the problem and study quasiperiodic recurrences in the weakly nonlinear $\alpha-$FPUT system in more detail. We aim to reconstruct the quasiperiodic behaviour observed in the original paper from the canonical transformation used to remove the three wave interactions, which is necessary before applying the wave turbulence formalism. We expect the construction to match the observed quasiperiodicity if we are in the weakly nonlinear regime. Surprisingly, in our work we show that this is not always the case and in particular, the recurrences observed in the original paper cannot be constructed by our method. We attribute this disagreement to the presence of small denominators in the canonical transformation used to remove the three wave interactions before arriving at the starting point of wave turbulence. We also show that these small denominators are present even in the weakly nonlinear regime, and they become more significant as the system size is increased. We also discuss our results in the context of the problem of equilibration in the $\alpha-$FPUT system, and point out some mathematical challenges when the wave turbulence formalism is applied to explain thermalization in the $\alpha-$FPUT problem. We argue that certain aspects of the $\alpha-$FPUT system such as presence of the stochasticity threshold, thermalization in the thermodynamic limit and the cause of quasiperiodicity are not clear, and that they require further mathematical and numerical studies.

Abstract:We study the transition from integrability to chaos for the three-particle Fermi-Pasta-Ulam- Tsingou (FPUT) model. We can show that both the quartic b-FPUT model ($\alpha$ = 0) and the cubic one ($\beta$ = 0) are integrable by introducing an appropriate Fourier representation to express the nonlinear terms of the Hamiltonian. For generic values of $\alpha$ and $\beta$, the model is non-integrable and displays a mixed phase space with both chaotic and regular trajectories. In the classical case, chaos is diagnosed by the investigation of Poincaré sections. In the quantum case, the level spacing statistics in the energy basis belongs to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble in the chaotic regime, and crosses over to Poissonian behavior in the quasi-integrable low-energy limit. In the chaotic part of the spectrum, two generic observables obey the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

The anti-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem in one-dimensional diatomic lattices

Abstract:We study the thermalization dynamics of one-dimensional diatomic lattices (which represents the simplest system possessing multi-branch phonons), exemplified by the famous Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT)-$\beta$ and the Toda models. Here we focus on how the system relaxes to the equilibrium state when part of highest-frequency optical modes are initially excited, which is called the anti-FPUT problem comparing with the original FPUT problem (low frequency excitations of the monatomic lattice). It is shown numerically that the final thermalization time $T_{\rm eq}$ of the diatomic FPUT-$\beta$ chain depends on whether its acoustic modes are thermalized, whereas the $T_{\rm eq}$ of the diatomic Toda chain depends on the optical ones; in addition, the metastable state of both models have different energy distributions and lifetimes. Despite these differences, in the near-integrable region, the $T_{\rm eq}$ of both models still follows the same scaling law, i.e., $T_{\rm eq}$ is inversely proportional to the square of the perturbation strength. Finally, comparisons of the thermalization behavior between different models under various initial conditions are briefly summarized.

Abstract:It is well known that the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) study of a chain of nonlinear oscillators is closely related to a number of completely integrable systems, including the Toda lattice. Here, we present a method that captures the departure of nonintegrable FPUT dynamics from those of a nearby integrable Toda lattice. Using initial long-wave data, we find that the former depart rather sharply from the latter near the predicted shock time of an asymptotic partial differential equation approximation, at which point energy cascades into higher lattice modes. Our method provides an appropriate frame of reference for one to distinguish the short-term dynamics of the two systems, whose macroscopic trajectories diverge noticeably only on a much longer timescale, when the FPUT dynamics thermalize. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.034204 ©2024 American Physical Society

Periodic Orbits in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou Systems

Abstract:The FPUT paradox is the phenomenon whereby a one-dimensional chain of oscillators with nonlinear couplings shows non-ergodic behavior. The trajectory of the system in phase space, with a long wavelength initial condition, closely follows that of the Toda model over short times, as both systems seem to relax quickly to a non-thermal, metastable state. Over longer times, resonances in the FPUT spectrum drive the system towards equilibrium, away from the Toda trajectory. Similar resonances are observed in $q$-breather spectra, suggesting that $q$-breathers are involved in the route towards thermalization. In this article we investigate such resonances and show that they occur due to exact overlaps of $q$-breather frequencies of the type $m\Omega_1 = \Omega_k$. The resonances appear as peaks in the energy spectrum. Further, they give rise to new composite periodic orbits, which exist simultaneously with the original $q$-breathers. We find that such resonances are absent in integrable systems, as a consequence of the (infinite number of) conservation laws associated with integrability.

Behavior and Breakdown of Higher-Order Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou Recurrences

Abstract:We investigate numerically the existence and stability of higher-order recurrences (HoRs), including super-recurrences, super-super-recurrences, etc., in the alpha and beta Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattices for initial conditions in the fundamental normal mode. Our results represent a considerable extension of the pioneering work of Tuck and Menzel on super-recurrences. For fixed lattice sizes, we observe and study apparent singularities in the periods of these HoRs, speculated to be caused by nonlinear resonances. Interestingly, these singularities depend very sensitively on the initial energy and the respective nonlinear parameters. Furthermore, we compare the mechanisms by which the super-recurrences in the two model's breakdown as the initial energy and respective nonlinear parameters are increased. The breakdown of super-recurrences in the beta-FPUT lattice is associated with the destruction of the so-called metastable state and hence is associated with relaxation towards equilibrium. For the alpha-FPUT lattice, we find this is not the case and show that the super-recurrences break down while the lattice is still metastable. We close with comments on the generality of our results for different lattice sizes.

Nonequilibrium Steady State and Heat Transport in Nonlinear Open Quantum Systems: Stochastic Influence Action and Functional Perturbative Analysis

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) exists at late times in open quantum systems with weak nonlinearity by following its nonequilibrium dynamics with a perturbative analysis. Here we consider an oscillator chain containing three-types of anharmonicity in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) model: cubic $\alpha$- and quartic $\beta$-type nearest-oscillator interactions and the on-site (pinned) Klein-Gordon (KG) quartic self-interaction. Assuming weak nonlinearity, we introduce a stochastic influence action approach to the problem and obtain the energy flow in different junctures of the chain. The formal results obtained here can be used for quantum transport problems in weakly nonlinear quantum systems. For $\alpha$-type anharmonicity, we observe that the first-order corrections do not play any role in the thermal transport in the NESS of the configuration we considered. For KG and $\beta$-types anharmonicity, we work out explicitly the case of two weakly nonlinearly coupled oscillators, with results scalable to any number of oscillators. We examine the late-time energy flows from one thermal bath to the other via the coupled oscillators, and show that both the zeroth- and the first-order contributions of the energy flow become constant in time at late times, signaling the existence of a late-time NESS to first order in nonlinearity. Our perturbative calculations provide a measure of the strength of nonlinearity for nonlinear open quantum systems, which may help control the mesoscopic heat transport distinct from or close to linear transport. Furthermore, our results also give a benchmark for the numerical challenge of simulating heat transport. Our setup and predictions can be implemented and verified by investigating heat flow in an array of Josephson junctions in the limit of large Josephson energy with the platform of circuit QED.

Abstract:We use a specialized boundary-value problem solver for mixed-type functional differential equations to numerically examine the landscape of traveling wave solutions to the diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) problem. By using a continuation approach, we are able to uncover the relationship between the branches of micropterons and nanopterons that have been rigorously constructed recently in various limiting regimes. We show that the associated surfaces are connected together in a nontrivial fashion and illustrate the key role that solitary waves play in the branch points. Finally, we numerically show that the diatomic solitary waves are stable under the full dynamics of the FPUT system.

Abstract:We extend to finite temperature the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This is done by resorting to the notion of mixed-state fidelity that allows one to compare two density matrices corresponding to two different thermal states. By exploiting the same concept we also propose a finite-temperature generalization of the Loschmidt echo. Explicit analytical expressions of these quantities are given for a class of quasi-free fermionic Hamiltonians. A numerical analysis is performed as well showing that the associated QPTs show their signatures in a finite range of temperatures.

Abstract:This work explores a fundamental dynamical structure for a wide range of many-body quantum systems under periodic driving. Generically, in the thermodynamic limit, such systems are known to heat up to infinite temperature states after infinite-time evolution, irrespective of dynamical details. In the present study, instead of considering infinitely long-time scale, we aim to provide a framework to understand the long but finite time behavior, namely the transient dynamics. In the analysis, we focus on the Floquet-Magnus (FM) expansion that gives a formal expression of the effective Hamiltonian on the system. Although in general the full series expansion is not convergent in the thermodynamics limit, we give a clear relationship between the FM expansion and the transient dynamics. More precisely, we rigorously show that a truncated version of the FM expansion accurately describes the exact dynamics for a finite-time scale. Our result reveals a reliable time scale of the validity of the FM expansion, which can be comparable to the experimental time scale. Furthermore, we discuss several dynamical phenomena, such as the effect of small integrability breaking, efficient numerical simulation of periodically driven systems, dynamical localization and thermalization. Especially on thermalization, we discuss generic scenario of the prethermalization phenomenon in periodically driven systems.

Fermionic theory of nonequilibrium steady states

Abstract:As the quantification of metabolism, nonequilibrium steady states play a central role in living matter, but are beyond the purview of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Here we develop a fermionic theory of nonequilibrium steady states in continuous-time Markovian systems, generalizing Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics to this case. The response to an arbitrary perturbation is computed, and simplified in canonical cases. Beyond response, we consider ensembles of nonequilibrium steady states and show that a general class of ensembles is described by a 2D statistical field theory with infinitesimally broken supersymmetry, which may form the basis of nontrivial solvable models of nonequilibrium steady states.

Micropteron traveling waves in diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou lattices under the equal mass limit

Abstract:The diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattice is an infinite chain of alternating particles connected by identical nonlinear springs. We prove the existence of micropteron traveling waves in the diatomic FPUT lattice in the limit as the ratio of the two alternating masses approaches 1, at which point the diatomic lattice reduces to the well-understood monatomic FPUT lattice. These are traveling waves whose profiles asymptote to a small periodic oscillation at infinity, instead of vanishing like the classical solitary wave. We produce these micropteron waves using a functional analytic method, originally due to Beale, that was successfully deployed in the related long wave and small mass diatomic problems. Unlike the long wave and small mass problems, this equal mass problem is not singularly perturbed, and so the amplitude of the micropteron's oscillation is not necessarily small beyond all orders (i.e., the traveling wave that we find is not necessarily a nanopteron). The central challenge of this equal mass problem hinges on a hidden solvability condition in the traveling wave equations, which manifests itself in the existence and fine properties of asymptotically sinusoidal solutions (Jost solutions) to an auxiliary advance-delay differential equation.

Abstract:We visualize the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence in a classical Heisenberg ferromagnetic (HF) spin chain by exploiting its gauge eq uivalence to the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation (NLSE). We discuss two types of spatially periodic breather excitations in the spin chain, that are associated with: (I) Akhmediev breather, and (II) Galilean transformed Akhmediev breather. The recurrence in the former is exact in the sense that the initial and final states are identical. In the later, the spin chain undergoes an additional global rotation during the rec urrence process, which makes the initial and final states distinguishable. Both the complex solutions (I) and (II) nevertheless show a definit e phase shift during the recurrence process. A one-to-one correspondence between HF spin chain and the NLSE seems missing by virtue of the clo seness of the FPUT recurrence.
Foundation of statistical mechanics under even more experimentally realistic conditions

Abstract:Understanding how macroscopic systems exhibit irreversible thermal behavior has been a long-standing challenge, first brought to prominence by Boltzmann. Recent advances have established rigorous conditions for isolated quantum systems to equilibrate to a maximum entropy state, contingent upon weak assumptions. These theorems, while powerful, apply for a sudden quench. However, natural processes involve finite-time perturbations or quenches, which raises a crucial question: Can these systems still equilibrate under more realistic, finite-time dynamics? In this work, we extend the established results to account for finite-time quenches, demonstrating that even under finite-time perturbations, the system will equilibrate provided it populates many significant energy levels. While the mathematical proof is more intricate than in the instantaneous case, the physical conclusion remains the same: sufficient perturbation leads to equilibration. Our results provide a broader and more physically realistic framework for understanding thermalization in isolated quantum systems

Abstract:We generalize the string method, originally designed for the study of thermally activated rare events, to the calculation of quantum tunneling rates. This generalization is based on the formal analogy between quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics in the path-integral formalism. The quantum string method first locates the minimal action path (MAP), which is a smooth curve connecting two minima of the imaginary-time action in the space of imaginary-time trajectories. From the MAP, the saddle point of the action (called “the bounce”) associated with the exponential factor for barrier tunneling probability is obtained and the pre-exponential factor (the ratio of determinants) for the tunneling rate evaluated using stochastic simulation. The quantum string method is implemented to calculate the bounce and rate of tunneling for the Mueller potential in two dimensions. The quantum problem is much more difficult than the thermally activated barrier crossing problem for the same potential. The model calculations show the string method to be an efficient numerical tool for the study of barrier tunneling in higher dimension, from the determination of the saddle point to the computation of the pre-exponential factor.
