Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the associations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour in early childhood with asthma and reduced lung function in later childhood within a large collaborative study. Design: Pooling of longitudinal data from collaborating birth cohorts using meta-analysis of separate cohort-specific estimates and analysis of individual participant data of all cohorts combined. Setting: Children aged 0-18 years from 26 European birth cohorts. Participants: 136 071 individual children from 26 cohorts, with information on PA and/or sedentary behaviour in early childhood and asthma assessment in later childhood. Main outcome measure: Questionnaire-based current asthma and lung function measured by spirometry (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1/forced vital capacity) at age 6-18 years. Results: Questionnaire-based and accelerometry-based PA and sedentary behaviour at age 3-5 years was not associated with asthma at age 6-18 years (PA in hours/day adjusted OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.04; sedentary behaviour in hours/day adjusted OR 1.03, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.07). PA was not associated with lung function at any age. Analyses of sedentary behaviour and lung function showed inconsistent results. Conclusions: Reduced PA and increased sedentary behaviour before 6 years of age were not associated with the presence of asthma later in childhood.
Age and School-Segment Difference in Daily Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity among Student (9–23 Years): a Cross-Sectional Accelerometer-Based Survey

Abstract:This study is cross-sectional in nature and aims to investigate and track sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity among student (aged 9–23 years) for seven consecutive days using an accelerometer. It also intends to analyze the current status of the daily activities of students using age and school-segment differences. The study recruits a total of 384 students [age: 14.41 ± 3.52 years; body mass index (BMI): 19.66 ± 3.67] from four schools out of which 180 (46.88%) were male. The study uses the means and standard deviations for statistical analysis and independent sample t-tests to determine gender differences. Analysis of covariance is used to determine whether or not daily SB and physical activity were statistically significant students according to gender and school segment followed by LSD post hoc tests for multiple comparisons. The results demonstrate that students were less physically active [moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA):60.4 ± 23.48 min/day] and more sedentary (598.47 ± 162.63 min/day). The sedentary time of the students displays an inverted U-trend, and their participation in MVPA exhibits a W-shape. After controlling for BMI, the results of ANCOVA point to a significant school-segment effect (p < 0.001) for SB (F = 83, ηp2 = 0.4) and physical activity (low-intensity physical activity: F = 108.61, ηp2 = 0.47; MPA: F = 401.65, ηp2 = 0.76; high-intensity physical activity: F = 88.43, ηp2 = 0.42; MVPA: F = 118.42, ηp2 = 0.49). Based on the behavioral characteristics of students across school segments, this study concluded that interventions targeting students' physical activity and physical health should be school segment specific. The results of the study provide a basis for future analysis of factors influencing students' physical activity behaviors across school segments and for proposing targeted intervention strategies for the future.
Physical activity and childhood asthma control: Mediation and moderation role of body mass index

Abstract:BackgroundPhysical activity (PA) may be associated with asthma management. Whether PA is associated with childhood asthma control is not well studied, and the role of body mass index (BMI) in this association remains unclarified. This study aimed to evaluate the association between PA and childhood asthma control and investigate the potential mediating and modifying role of BMI in the association. MethodsThis cross-sectional study involved 303 asthmatic children aged 5–14 years. Information on PA was collected from children. Asthma control was assessed using a valid questionnaire by children and their parents. Height and weight were objectively measured and BMI was calculated and classified. Multiple linear regression, mediation, and moderation analyses were performed. ResultsThere was a positive association between PA and childhood asthma control with adjustment for variates (B = 0.144, p = .012). Mediation analysis indicated that BMI status negatively mediated the association (estimate = −0.656, 95% credit interval: −1.645, −0.006), and such indirect effect is lower than the direct effect (indirect effect/direct effect = 58.3%). No evidence of effect modification by BMI was observed (Pinteraction = 0.516). Stratified analyses showed that the significant association was only observed in children with overweight/obesity (normal weight: B = 0.863, p = .189; overweight/obese: B = 1.494, p = .044). ConclusionsIncreased PA is associated with improved childhood asthma control, especially for children with higher BMI. BMI exhibited a negative effect but not effect modification in this association. PA should be encouraged to improve asthma control for asthmatic children. Besides, mechanisms other than weight loss may explain the association.

Asthma as a Barrier to Children's Physical Activity: Implications for Body Mass Index and Mental Health

Abstract:OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this work was to identify barriers to physical activity in children with asthma and to compare their customary activity levels, BMI and emotional well-being with that of children with other medical conditions. It was hypothesized that children with asthma would have higher BMI and lower levels of customary activity. PATIENTS AND METHODS. We studied children aged 7 to 14 years attending hospital outpatient clinics for either asthma (asthma group: n = 56) or for otorhinolaryngology or dermatological conditions (nonasthma group: n = 61). In this cross-sectional survey, children's weight and height were recorded and their BMI classified according to International Obesity Task Force classification of obesity. Child mental health was assessed by the parent-rated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The child-rated Physical Activity Questionnaire assessed total sedentary and physical activities during the previous 24 hours. RESULTS. The asthma group had a higher mean BMI (20.78 vs 18.82) and higher rates of obesity (21.4% vs 6.6%). Children with asthma reported fewer physical activities than the nonasthma group (median 4 per day vs 6 per day) but comparable levels of sedentary activities. Asthma was the strongest predictor of lower activity scores, followed by younger age. The asthma group had higher levels of emotional difficulties and, within this group, more active children had better mental health. More parents in the asthma group identified the child's health as a barrier to exercise (60.7% vs 11%). The same was true of children (66.1% vs 11.5%). CONCLUSIONS. We found that children attending a hospital clinic for asthma were more likely to be obese and were significantly less active than a comparison group with other medical conditions. Asthma was identified as a barrier to exercise by parents and children. Strategies to promote exercise within pediatric asthma care are needed to protect both mental and physical health.

Abstract:BackgroundSmart wearables such as the Fitbit wristband provide the opportunity to monitor patients more comprehensively, to track patients in a fashion that more closely follows the contours of their lives, and to derive a more complete dataset that enables precision medicine. However, the utility and efficacy of using wearable devices to monitor adolescent patients’ asthma outcomes have not been established. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to explore the association between self‑reported sleep data, Fitbit sleep and physical activity data, and pediatric asthma impact (PAI). MethodsWe conducted an 8‑week pilot study with 22 adolescent asthma patients to collect: (1) weekly or biweekly patient‑reported data using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures of PAI, sleep disturbance (SD), and sleep‑related impairment (SRI) and (2) real-time Fitbit (ie, Fitbit Charge HR) data on physical activity (F-AM) and sleep quality (F‑SQ). To explore the relationship among the self-reported and Fitbit measures, we computed weekly Pearson correlations among these variables of interest. ResultsWe have shown that the Fitbit-derived sleep quality F-SQ measure has a moderate correlation with the PROMIS SD score (average r=−.31, P=.01) and a weak but significant correlation with the PROMIS PAI score (average r=−.18, P=.02). The Fitbit physical activity measure has a negligible correlation with PAI (average r=.04, P=.62). ConclusionsOur findings support the potential of using wrist-worn devices to continuously monitor two important factors—physical activity and sleep—associated with patients’ asthma outcomes and to develop a personalized asthma management platform.
A Case-Control Study of Body Mass Index and Asthma in Asian Children.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The prevalence of obesity and asthma in the United States has increased in past decades. Numerous studies have focused on the relationship between the 2 factors. However, to our knowledge, this association in Asian Americans has not been extensively studied.OBJECTIVE:To assess the association between body mass index (BMI) and asthma in an Asian American pediatric population.METHODS:We conducted a case-control medical record review study of 94 pediatric patients with and without asthma at Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. The BMI of asthmatic children before and after their asthma diagnosis was compared with the BMI of children without asthma.RESULTS:Multiple analyses showed no significant (P > .05) association between various measures of BMI and asthma in this population. After adjustment for atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and other allergies, the odds ratio in our longitudinal analysis using BMI greater than the 85th percentile for asthmatic children vs nonasthmatic children was 0.92 (95% confidence interval, 0.40-2.20).CONCLUSIONS:Either overweight and obesity do not lead to asthma in Asian immigrant children, consistent with our results, or something about our method limited our ability to observe the association. In either case, more research in the population is needed.
Joint Associations Between Weekday and Weekend Physical Activity or Sedentary Time and Childhood Obesity

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the single and joint associations of objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time on week and weekend days with obesity in children from 12 countries across all inhabited continents. Methods: A multinational, 12-country cross-sectional study of 5779 children aged 9-11 years was conducted. Time spent in MVPA and sedentary behaviors was assessed by waist-worn accelerometry. Logistic regression was used to examine the independent and joint associations of MVPA and sedentary time on weekdays and weekend with the odds of obesity. Results: After adjustment for all confounding factors, the odds ratios (ORs) of childhood obesity were the highest among children with a low level of MVPA on both weekdays and weekend (OR 4.67), high among children with a high level of MVPA on weekdays and a low level of MVPA on weekend (OR 1.99) and high among children with a low level of MVPA on weekdays and a high levels of MVPA on weekend (OR 2.20), compared to those with a high level of MVPA on both weekdays and weekend. Similarly, the ORs of childhood obesity were significantly higher among children with a high level of sedentary time on both weekdays and weekend (OR 1.87) compared with those with low levels of sedentary time on both weekdays and weekend. Conclusions: Lower levels of MVPA or higher levels of sedentary time on either weekdays or weekend were associated with increased odds of obesity in 9-11 year old children in 12 countries.
Association of body mass index with asthma occurrence and persistence in adolescents: A retrospective study of NHANES (2011-2018)

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the association of body mass index (BMI) with asthma and analyze the risk factors of asthma persistence among overweight/obese adolescents and those with a high risk for obesity. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, adolescents aged 11-17 years with complete general information and asthma diagnoses were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. For adolescents without self-reported asthma, we performed matching according to age and sex at a case-to-control ratio of 1:3. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify independent predictors of asthma occurrence followed by constructing a nomogram and comparing its efficacy to independent factors in predicting asthma occurrence. Besides, associations of BMI with asthma occurrence and persistence were evaluated. Finally, we obtained risk factors for asthma persistence in overweight/obese individuals and those at a high risk for obesity. Results: Totally 753 adolescents with asthma and 2259 adolescents without asthma were included to analyze the occurrence of asthma. BMI and Hispanic Ethnicity were independent predictors of asthma occurrence and were included in nomogram construction. BMI had an efficiency comparable to that of the nomogram model in predicting asthma occurrence, which is superior to that of Hispanic Ethnicity. Of the 753 adolescents diagnosed with asthma, 464 were still diagnosed with asthma of at least a year's duration. Interestingly, BMI may have the ability to predict asthma persistence. Further, Hispanic Ethnicity and household income were significantly related to asthma occurrence among overweight/obese and high-risk obese individuals. Conclusions: High BMI could independently predict increased asthma occurrence. Additionally, BMI may play an essential role in predicting asthma persistence. This study may help improve the diagnosis and reduce the occurrence of asthma.

Abstract:Background: This study examined the strength, shape and direction of associations of accelerometer-assessed overall, school- and non-school-based moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time (ST) with BMI among adolescents across the world. Second, we examined whether these associations differed by study site and sex. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the IPEN Adolescent study, an observational multi-country study, were used. Participants wore an accelerometer for seven days, reported height and weight, and completed a socio-demographic survey. In total, 4852 adolescents (46.6% boys), aged 11-19 years (mean age = 14.6, SD = 1.7 years) were included in the analyses, using generalized additive mixed models. Results: Adolescents accumulated on average 41.3 (SD = 22.6) min/day of MVPA and 531.8 (SD = 81.1) min/day of ST, and the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 17.2% (IOTF), but these mean values differed by country. Linear negative associations of accelerometer-based MVPA and ST with standardized BMI scores and the likelihood of being overweight/obese were found. School-based ST and non-school-based MVPA were more strongly negatively associated to the outcomes than non-school based ST and school-based MVPA. Study site moderated the associations; adolescent sex did not. No curvilinear associations were found. Conclusions: This multi-country study confirmed the importance of MVPA as a potential protective factor against overweight/obesity in adolescents. Non-school-based MVPA seemed to be the main driver of these associations. Unexpected results were found for ST, calling for further examination in methodologically sound international studies but using inclinometers or pressure sensors to provide more precise ST measures.
The association between device-measured sitting time and cardiometabolic health risk factors in children

Abstract:Abstract Background There is limited evidence of the associations between postural-derived sitting time, waist-worn derived sedentary time and children’s health and the moderation effect of physical activity (PA). This study examined associations of children’s device-measured sitting time with cardiometabolic health risk factors, including moderation by physical activity. Methods Cross-sectional baseline data from children (mean-age 8.2 ± 0.5 years) in Melbourne, Australia (2010) participating in the TransformUs program were used. Children simultaneously wore an activ PAL to assess sitting time and an ActiGraph GT3X to assess sedentary time and physical activity intensity. Cardiometabolic health risk factors included: adiposity (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC]), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum insulin, and 25-hydroxyvitaminD (25[OH]D). Linear regression models ( n = 71–113) assessed associations between sitting time with each health risk factor, adjusted for different PA intensities (i.e. light [LIPA], moderate-vigorous intensities [MVPA], separately on each model), age, sex, adiposity, and clustering by school. Interaction terms examined moderation. The analyses were repeated using device-measured sedentary time (i.e. ActiGraph GT3X) for comparison. Results Sitting time was positively associated with SBP ( b = 0.015; 95%CI: 0.004, 0.026), DBP ( b = 0.012; 95%CI:0.004, 0.020), and FPG ( b = 0.001; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.000), after adjusting for higher PA intensities. The association between sitting time and insulin ( b = 0.003; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.006) was attenuated after adjusting for higher PA intensities. When the models were adjusted for LIPA and MVPA, there was a negative association with LDL ( b =-0.001; 95%CI: -0.002, -0.000 and b =-0.001; 95%CI: -0.003, -0.000, respectively). There was a negative association of sedentary time with WCz ( b =-0.003; 95%CI: -0.005, 0.000) and BMIz ( b =-0.003; 95%CI: -0.006, -0.000) when the models were adjusted by MVPA. Sedentary time was positively associated with triglycerides ( b = 0.001; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.001) but attenuated after adjusting for MVPA. No evidence of moderation effects was found. Conclusions Higher volumes of sitting and sedentary time were associated with some adverse associations on some cardiometabolic health risk factors in children. These associations were more evident when sitting time was the predictor. This suggests that reducing time spent sitting may benefit some cardiometabolic health outcomes, but future experimental research is needed to confirm causal relationships and identify the biological mechanisms that might be involved. The longitudinal association between asthma severity and physical fitness among new York City public school youth

Abstract:Severe persistent childhood asthma is associated with low physical activity and may be associated with poor physical fitness. Research on the asthma severity-fitness association longitudinally and across sociodemographic subgroups is needed to inform fitness interventions targeting youth with asthma. We evaluated the relationship between asthma severity (categorized as severe, mild, or no asthma) and subsequent fitness in New York City (NYC) public school youth enrolled in grades 4-12 using the NYC Fitnessgram dataset (2010-2018). Longitudinal mixed models with random intercepts were fit to test the association between asthma severity and one-year lagged fitness z-scores by clustering repeated annual observations at the student level. Models were adjusted for sex, race/ethnicity, grade level, poverty status, time, and stratified by sociodemographic factors. The analytic sample included 663,137 students (51% male; 31% non-Hispanic Black, 40% Hispanic; 55% in grades 4-8, 70% high poverty; 87%, 11% and 1% with no, mild, and severe asthma, respectively). Students with severe asthma and mild asthma demonstrated -0.19 (95% CI, -0.20 to -0.17) and - 0.10 (95% CI, -0.11 to -0.10), respectively, lower fitness z-scores in the subsequent year relative to students without asthma. After stratifying by demographics, the magnitude of the asthma severity-fitness relationship was highest for non-Hispanic white vs. all other racial/ethnic subgroups, and was similar across sex, grade level, and household poverty status. Overall, we observed an inverse longitudinal relationship between asthma severity and subsequent fitness among urban youth, particularly non-Hispanic Whites. Future research should examine how neighborhood-level factors impact the asthma severity-fitness relationship across racial/ethnic subgroups.

Abstract:Abstract Background Between-person differences in sedentary patterns should be considered to understand the role of sedentary behavior (SB) in the development of childhood obesity. This study took a novel approach based on compositional data analysis to examine associations between SB patterns and adiposity and investigate differences in adiposity associated with time reallocation between time spent in sedentary bouts of different duration and physical activity. Methods An analysis of cross-sectional data was performed in 425 children aged 7–12 years (58% girls). Waking behaviors were assessed using ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Multi-frequency bioimpedance measurement was used to determine adiposity. Compositional regression models with robust estimators were used to analyze associations between sedentary patterns and adiposity markers. To examine differences in adiposity associated with time reallocation, we used the compositional isotemporal substitution model. Results Significantly higher fat mass percentage (FM%; β ilr1 = 0.18; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.34; p = 0.040) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT; β ilr1 = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.71; p = 0.034) were associated with time spent in middle sedentary bouts in duration of 10–29 min (relative to remaining behaviors). No significant associations were found for short (< 10 min) and long sedentary bouts (≥30 min). Substituting the time spent in total SB with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with a decrease in VAT. Substituting 1 h/week of the time spent in middle sedentary bouts with MVPA was associated with 2.9% (95% CI: 1.2, 4.6), 3.4% (95% CI: 1.2, 5.5), and 6.1% (95% CI: 2.9, 9.2) lower FM%, fat mass index, and VAT, respectively. Moreover, substituting 2 h/week of time spent in middle sedentary bouts with short sedentary bouts was associated with 3.5% (95% CI: 0.02, 6.9) lower FM%. Conclusions Our findings suggest that adiposity status could be improved by increasing MVPA at the expense of time spent in middle sedentary bouts. Some benefits to adiposity may also be expected from replacing middle sedentary bouts with short sedentary bouts, that is, by taking standing or activity breaks more often. These findings may help design more effective interventions to prevent and control childhood obesity.

Physical activity in asthma control and its immune modulatory effect in asthmatic preschoolers

Abstract:Background: The impact of physical activity on immune response is a hot topic in exercise immunology, but studies involving asthmatic children are scarce. Our aims were to examine whether there were any differences in the level of physical activity and daily TV attendance, to assess its role on asthma control and immune responses to various immune stimulants. Methods: Weekly physical activity and daily television attendance were obtained from questionnaires at inclusion of the PreDicta study. PBMC cultures were stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA), R848, poly I:C, and zymosan. A panel of cytokines was measured and quantified in cell culture supernatants using luminometric multiplex immunofluorescence beads-based assay. Results: Asthmatic preschoolers showed significantly more TV attendance than their healthy peers (58.6% vs. 41.5% 1-3 h daily and only 25.7% vs. 47.2% ≤1 h daily) and poor asthma control was associated with less frequent physical activity (PA) (75% no or occasional activity in uncontrolled vs. 20% in controlled asthma; 25% ≥3 times weekly vs. 62%). Asthmatics with increased PA exhibited elevated cytokine levels in response to polyclonal stimulants, suggesting a readiness of circulating immune cells for type 1, 2, and 17 cytokine release compared to subjects with low PA and high TV attendance. This may also represent a proinflammatory state in high PA asthmatic children. Low physical activity and high TV attendance were associated with a decrease in proinflammatory cytokines. Proinflammatory cytokines were correlating with each other in in vitro immune responses of asthmatic children, but not healthy controls, this correlation was more pronounced in children with sedentary behavior. Conclusion: Asthmatic children show more sedentary behavior than healthy subjects, while poor asthma control is associated with a substantial decrease in physical activity. Our results suggest that asthmatic children may profit from regular exercise, as elevated cytokine levels in stimulated conditions indicate an immune system prepared for responding strongly in case of different types of infections. However, it has to be considered that a hyperinflammatory state in high PA may not be beneficial in asthmatic children.
Association between body fat distribution and asthma in adults: results from the cross-sectional and bidirectional Mendelian randomization study

Abstract:Background: Many studies define obesity based on body mass index (BMI) and explore its relationship with adult asthma. However, BMI only considers height and weight, ignoring other factors such as body fat, which may have a greater impact on health. We investigated the relationship between body fat distribution and adult asthma using both a cross-sectional study and bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods: Weighted logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between body fat distribution measurements and adult asthma in the cross-sectional study from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were employed to explore the dose-response relationship between them. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the main method of MR analysis to explore the causal effect of exposure on outcome. Results: After adjusting for all covariates, weighted logistic regression analysis indicated that fat mass in the left arm, left leg, right arm, right leg, trunk, and total body is associated with an increased risk of developing adult asthma (p < 0.05). RCS curves showed that all six fat mass indicators exhibit a J-shaped relationship with adult asthma. Forward MR analysis found a causal effect of six fat mass indicators on the increased risk of adult asthma (p < 0.05). However, reverse MR did not reveal any causal effect of adult asthma on these six fat mass indicators (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study supports a positive correlation and a unidirectional causality between body fat distribution measurements and the risk of adult asthma. Further studies are needed to validate our findings.
Body composition and respiratory outcomes in children: a population-based prospective cohort study

Abstract:Background Body composition might influence lung function and asthma in children, but its longitudinal relations are unclear. We aimed to identify critical periods for body composition changes during childhood and adolescence in relation to respiratory outcomes in adolescents. Methods In a population-based prospective cohort study, we measured body mass index, fat mass index (FMI), lean mass index (LMI) and the ratio of android fat mass divided by gynoid fat mass (A/G ratio) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at 6, 10 and 13 years. At 13 years, lung function was measured by spirometry, and current asthma was assessed by questionnaire. Results Most prominently and consistently, higher FMI and A/G ratio at age 13 years were associated with lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1 )/forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory flow after exhaling 75% of FVC (FEF 75 ) (range Z-score difference −0.13 (95% CI −0.16 to –0.10) to −0.08 (95% CI −0.11 to –0.05) per SD score increase), and higher LMI at all ages was associated with higher FEF 75 (range Z-score difference 0.05 (95% CI 0.01 to 0.08) to 0.09 (95% CI 0.06 to 0.13)). Between the ages of 6 and 13 years, normal to high FMI and A/G ratio were associated with lower FEV 1 /FVC and FEF 75 (range Z-score difference −0.20 (95% CI −0.30 to –0.10) to −0.17 (95% CI −0.28 to –0.06)) and high to high LMI with higher FEF 75 (range Z-score difference0.32 (95% CI 0.23 to 0.41)). Body composition changes were not associated with asthma. Conclusion Adolescents with higher total and abdominal fat indices may have impaired lung function, while those with a higher lean mass during childhood and adolescence may have better small airway function. Public health measures should focus on a healthy body composition in adolescents to minimise respiratory morbidity.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the association between allergic diseases and the tendency to self-harm in adolescents, considering the role of sedentary behavior. Methods: This was a population-based cross-sectional study, carried out in 2022, with 727 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years, from a capital in the Northeast of Brazil. The authors evaluated the association between each allergic disease (asthma, rhinitis and eczema) and self-harm, sedentary behavior and other variables. The authors performed an adjusted analysis of the associations between each allergy disease and the tendency to self-harm and then adjusted to the presence of family members and sedentary behavior. Results: The prevalence of asthma, rhinitis and eczema were 18.76%, 36.21% and 12.86%, respectively. Sedentary behavior and tendency to self-harm were more frequently reported in asthmatics (PR 2.16; 95% CI: 1.55 - 3.00 and PR 1.98; 95% CI: 1.47 - 2.68, for sedentary behavior and self-harm respectively), rhinitis (PR 1.53; 95% CI: 1.25 - 1.88 and PR 1.33; 95% CI: 1.09 - 1.62, respectively) and eczema (PR 2.35; 95% CI: 1.54 - 3.58 and PR 1.55; 95% CI: 1.05 - 2.28, respectively). There was a reduction in the strength of this association in the three conditions, which included a loss of association. Conclusion: High rates of sedentary behavior and self-harm in those with asthma, rhinitis and eczema. Physical activity attenuated the risk for self-harm. It warns about the urgency in detecting these factors, whether in the diagnosis or in the implementation of therapy, seeking to reduce their harmful consequences in the short and long term.
Association of Socioeconomic Status and a Broad Combination of Lifestyle Factors with Adult-Onset Asthma: a Cohort Study

Abstract:BackgroundThe prevalence of asthma is gradually increasing worldwide and there are socioeconomic inequalities in the risk of developing asthma.ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate whether the lifestyle is associated with asthma in adults, as well as whether and to what extent healthy lifestyles may modify socioeconomic status (SES) inequities in asthma.MethodsThis study included a total of 223951 participants from the UK Biobank. Smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, healthy diet patterns, sedentary time, and sleep duration items were used to construct the lifestyle score. Income, education, and occupation were used to assess SES. Cases of adult-onset asthma were identified based on electronic health records. The Cox proportional hazards regression was used to explore the association of socioeconomic inequality and lifestyle factors with asthma.ResultsCompared with the most healthy lifestyle category, the HRs (95% CIs) of the moderately healthy lifestyle and least healthy lifestyle categories for asthma were 1.08 (1.01-1.15) and 1.29 (1.20-1.39), respectively. A significant interaction (P interaction< 0.05) was found between lifestyle categories and socioeconomic status, and the association between them was more pronounced in participants with low socioeconomic status (HR least healthy vs most healthy: 1.58, 95%CI: 1.40-1.80). The joint analysis revealed that the risk of asthma was highest among participants with the lowest SES and the least healthy lifestyles (HR: 2.02, 95%CI: 1.74-2.33).ConclusionsUnhealthy lifestyle factors are associated with an increased risk of asthma in adults, and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are more negatively affected by unhealthy lifestyles. Public health strategies for asthma prevention may need to be tailored according to socioeconomic status, and social policies to reduce poverty are needed alongside lifestyle interventions in areas of deprivation.
Joint association of sedentary behavior and physical activity with pulmonary function

Abstract:Abstract Background Sedentary behavior may influence the respiratory health, but the joint effects of sedentary behavior and physical activity on pulmonary function remains poorly elucidated. We aimed to estimate the association between sedentary behavior and physical activity with pulmonary function. Methods A total of 12,343 participants aged 12–79 years were analyzed from the U.S. NHANES 2007–2012. Participants were categorized into 16 groups according to the cross-tabulation of sedentary behavior time (0–4.0, 4.1–8.0, 8.1–12.0, and > 12.0 h/day) and moderate or vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (0, 1–149, 150–299, and ≥ 300 min/week). Generalized linear models were used to test the association of sedentary behavior and MVPA with pulmonary function. Results Participants with sedentary behavior > 4.0 h/day were negatively related to FEV 1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 s) (β ranging from -0.015 to -0.009, p 12.0 h/day of sedentary behavior), the negative association of sedentary behavior ≤ 8.0 h/day with FEV 1 may be reduced through appropriate MVPA (β ranging from 0.019 to 0.030, p 8.0 h/day, even MVPA ≥ 300 min/week may not decrease the negative relationships. Similar results were also observed in FVC (forced vital capacity) (β ranging from 0.018 to 0.030, p < 0.05). In participants aged ≥ 45 years, the associations were more notable. Conclusion This study indicated the sedentary behavior ≤ 4.0 h/day was a relatively healthy lifestyle for pulmonary function. Only below 8.0 h/day of sedentary behavior, the negative association with pulmonary function may be reduced through appropriate MVPA.

Abstract:(1) Background: Sedentary behavior is increasing in all age groups and is one of the most common lifestyles that is a risk factor for overweight and obesity; however, few studies have evaluated the impact of leisure-time sedentary behavior on overweight and obesity. This study aims to examine the distribution characteristics of different leisure-time sedentary behaviors and their effects on excessive weight in different age groups in the Chinese population to provide evidence for the development of behavioral interventions. (2) Methods: This study utilizes data from the 2004 to 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Participants ranged in age from 6 to 18 years or older and were from China. Weight and height were measured in the physical examination, and the sedentary behavior times during leisure periods were collected by using a questionnaire. Logistic regression models were performed for association analyses. (3) Results: A total of 36,169 participants were included in this study. The impact of screen-based sedentary leisure time on excessive weight is greater in middle-aged and older adults. For middle-aged adults, sedentary time periods spent on the Internet or video games were found to be significantly and positively associated with excessive weight (OR, 1.122, 95% CI, 1.005–1.253). In addition, for older adults, sedentary time periods spent watching television or videos were found to be significantly and positively associated with excessive weight (OR, 1.065, 95% CI, 1.035–1.095). (4) Conclusions: This study helps grasp the target population and provide evidence for the development of behavioral intervention guidelines.
