Abstract:Economic development usually means energy demand, which in turn causes carbon emissions. For countries and enterprises, achieving emission reduction targets in the process of economic growth, meaning a decoupling between carbon emissions and economic growth, is the best developing path under low-carbon economy. China has pledged at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly to achieve carbon neutral by 2060. How challenging is it to meet this commitment while sustain the social-economic development? In this study, we apply the Tapio decoupling model to analyze the decoupling status of provincial carbon emissions from its economic development; and combine the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index model with the Cobb-Douglas production function to study the emission driving force, especially from economic perspective. Results show that emissions in most provinces have been weakly decoupled from economic development, and the latter drove emissions mainly via capital investment and total factor productivity. We further decompose the emissions-economy decoupling into the decoupling between CO2 emissions and energy consumption, as well as the decoupling between the energy consumption and economic development. Our results indicate that the emissions-economy decoupling has been primarily depending on the decoupling of economic activities from energy consumption during the study period. Substantial variation exists in provincial emissions and its driving forces, however, the emissions-economy decoupling trend tends to converge as one club, suggesting more or less coherent low-carbon progress across the provinces.

Abstract:Many studies have shown that the rapid agricultural mechanization development in China led to substantial energy consumption and CO2 emission growth. To better explain the mechanism behind the decoupling between economic growth and CO2 emissions, this paper extends the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) and production-theoretical decomposition (PDA) considering agricultural decoupling from both structural and technical perspectives. The results reveal that (1) China's agricultural decoupling performance was not ideal. Investment and investment efficiency were the most important factors influencing the decoupling status. The main decoupling obstacle was a higher investment in productivity rather than in energy conservation and carbon reduction. (2) The decoupling status and investment orientation of decoupling efforts among regions were different. Strong negative decoupling statuses frequently occurred in the eastern region, whose main disadvantage was high potential energy intensity. The decoupling status of the central region exhibited expansive features. The decoupling key is to invest more in energy-saving technology rather than in production. The western region changed from weak decoupling to expansive negative decoupling. Both output technology and energy-related factors should be the main investment targets. (3) Weak decoupling and expansive negative decoupling were the most common statuses among provinces. The influence mechanism of drivers exhibited a high spatial heterogeneity at the provincial level. Therefore, the study offered a convincing basis for local governments to formulate low-carbon agricultural development policies by identifying the main decoupling drivers.

Abstract:Agrochemical inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides have been recognized as sources of agricultural non-point source pollution and are controlled in order to prevent further deterioration of water pollution. In consideration of the available and effective measures to improve agricultural output value in a long-term, the key to the adoption of reduction control on agrochemical inputs is to ensure the decoupling relationship of agrochemical inputs to agricultural economic growth and to find out the endogenous growth of agrochemical inputs. This paper analyzed the relationship of agrochemical input consumption and agricultural output value in Eastern China by the Topia decoupling model. Interestingly, the transformation of expansive negative decoupling-expansive coupling-weak decoupling-strong decoupling was exposed, which can be used as a theoretical support to the source reduction control on agricultural non-point source pollution. The source reduction can be influenced of three factors: area factor, agricultural productivity factor and efficiency factor, which were decomposed by applying a log-mean Divisia index (LMDI) method, and the efficiency factor can promote the slowing down of the increase of agrochemical input consumption, while the agricultural productivity factor was the main factor to increase agrochemical input consumption; the area factor was not obvious. In addition to that, the formulation and implementation of source reduction control policies was affected by the differences of the spatial framework in Eastern China, where the source reduction control in different regions would be used to move ahead (or to delay).

Abstract:The coordinated development of the economy, resources, and environment is a key aspect of sustainable development. China’s rapid agricultural modernization has been accompanied by the continuous growth of rural economic aggregate and carbon emissions from the planting industry. However, the quantitative relationship between these two factors and its internal mechanism are not yet fully understood. In this paper, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method is used to calculate the carbon emissions of the planting industry in China from 1998–2019. Based on this, the Tapio decoupling analysis model was constructed to study the decoupling relationship between economic development and carbon emissions of the planting industry in China from 1998–2019 and the associated spatial and temporal evolution patterns. The effect of the complete decomposition model (without residuals), in terms of carbon emissions from the planting industry, on the process of economic development and its transmission mechanism are introduced. The results show that: (1) The carbon emissions of the planting industry in China increased with the economic development occurring from 1998–2005, where agricultural economic development was highly dependent on resource factors and the environment. The growth trend of carbon emissions of the planting industry slowed from 2006 to 2019, while economic development has gradually realized the decoupling of carbon emissions from the planting industry. (2) From 1998–2019, in Heilongjiang, Sichuan, and Hunan, the economic development was given priority, showing strong and negative decoupling with carbon emissions from farming. The economic development in most regions were given priority, showing strong decoupling with carbon emissions from farming. Up to 2019, decoupling was observed with a significant trend of spatial agglomeration. (3) Economic scale effects had a positive influence on the carbon emissions of the planting industry, while the technology effect and population effect had an inhibiting influence on the carbon emissions of the planting industry. The key policy implication of this paper is that improvement of the quality of economic development serves as the premise for the transformation of the economic development mode. It is necessary to reasonably regulate the economic growth rate and expansion scale, reduce resource consumption and pollutant emission technology, and to make full use of resources, in order to provide a basis for the formulation of reasonable emission reduction policies. An effective way to realize the sustainable development of the agricultural economy would be to improve the technical efficiency, control the population scale appropriately, and optimize the agricultural industrial structure.

Decoupling Analysis of Economic Growth and Energy Carbon Emissions in China

Abstract:The relationship between economic growth and energy carbon emissions has been paid much attention. By constructing a decoupling analysis model, we discussed the decoupling relationship between economic growth and energy carbon emissions in China, and analyzed temporal and spatial variation trends in decoupling development by evaluating the decoupling degree. Results show that 1) China pertains to weak decoupling at a national level during the period 1980-2008, except for the period 2000-2005, in which China fell into expansive negative decoupling. The decoupling degree fluctuated with changes in macro-economic situations and policy regulation. There is room for achieving stronger decoupling, and the development trend of weak decoupling will continue for some time in the future. 2) At a provincial level, the provincial regions belonged to either weak decoupling or expansive negative decoupling from 2000 to 2008. During the period 2000-2005, 13 provincial regions belonged to weak decoupling; during the period 2005-2008, 29 provincial regions belonged to weak decoupling except for Qinghai Province, with most of regions achieving more significant decoupling in the later period, and the regional gap of decoupling degree was narrowing. 3) During the period 2000-2005, the decoupling spatial pattern of economy from carbon emissions exhibited a state of dispersion. The significant decoupling regions were generally distributed in eastern China, showing large regional differences in the decoupling degree. During the period 2005-2008, the significant decoupling regions showed a trend in spatial agglomeration, mainly concentrating in northern China, eastern China, and central China, with regional differences being significantly reduced. 4) Intermediate variable analysis indicates that on both the national and provincial levels, decoupling of economic growth from energy carbon emissions is mainly caused by the decoupling of economy from energy consumption. In general, China’s technology about carbon emissions reduction remains relatively low, which has limited its contribution to decoupling economy from carbon emissions, with no significant regional differences and the lag behind in technological advancement. Therefore, future measures for decoupling development are promoting energy-saving technologies and industrial upgrading, strengthening the development of technologies on carbon emissions reduction, and gradually improving the energy structure.

Abstract:The decoupling between economic growth and energy consumption in China is a major concern for academics and policy-makers owing to China's large economy, tremendous energy consumption, and the fast growth of both, but less to be discussed at the sectoral level. This paper takes advantage of the input-output tables to take an insight into the complete energy consumption of sectors, including both direct and indirect parts in the supply chain, in the Chinese economy during 1995–2015. Combining with Tapio decoupling index and the Log-Mean Divisia Index (LMDI), this study not only evaluates the decoupling status between the complete energy consumption and sectoral economic growth but also reveals factors that cause the changes of decoupling index at the sectoral level. Our results show that China witnessed a common weak decoupling and end up with a strong decoupling for its sectors. The changes in decoupling status mainly occurred during 1996–1998, 2001–2003, and 2011–2013 due to financial crises, international trade growth, and less energy consumption. The production effect is a positive driving factor of the decoupling index, while the energy intensity effect plays a negative role in the decoupling index growth. The energy structure effect is insignificant compared to the production effect and the energy intensity effect. Our results provide some new insights into the decoupling progress between sectoral growth and complete energy consumption where the sectoral differences are emphasized for both theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:This study decomposed the indicator of decoupling of carbon emissions due to fossil energy consumption from economic growth in China via the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method to explore key factors influencing decoupling status in different periods. The decoupling indicator was decomposed into energy structure, energy intensity, economic structure, and economic output effects over each period. Decoupling varied due to changes in economic growth and energy intensity during different periods. The economic output effect significantly enhanced decoupling, while the energy intensity effect greatly decreased decoupling. The energy structure and economic structure effects had slight impacts on decoupling. A comparative analysis across different sectors and industrial subsectors revealed that industrial growth determined the status of decoupling of carbon emissions from economic growth in China. In terms of industrial subsectors, the major sources of carbon emissions were electricity, steam, and water production and other energy-intensive subsectors. The energy-intensive subsectors, such as coal mining and washing, petroleum and natural gas exploitation, and chemical manufacture, had great effects on the decoupling of carbon emissions, whereas non-energy-intensive subsectors, such as instruments, meters, cultural and office machinery, and ordinary equipment manufacture, had relatively slight impacts on the decoupling. Policy implications in terms of economic growth, economic structure, and energy consumption were discussed.

Abstract:Residential energy consumption (REC) is now the second largest energy sector in China. However, decoupling analysis of REC has not received enough attention. Here, we explore the decoupling relationship between REC and economic growth in urban and rural Guangdong from 2000 to 2017. First, we use the Tapio decoupling model to study the decoupling state. Then, key drivers affecting the decoupling were explored by combining the Tapio decoupling model with the Log-mean Divisa Index (LMDI) method. Finally, the decoupling efforts were evaluated by using the decoupling efforts model. The main results are as follows: (1) The decoupling state in urban regions was better than that in rural regions. Urban regions experienced weak decoupling (WD) in most years during 2000–2017, while expansive negative decoupling (END) mostly was seen in rural regions. (2) The per capita income effect was the most important driver inhibiting decoupling in Guangdong urban and rural regions. The energy intensity effect was the biggest driver promoting decoupling in urban Guangdong, followed by the family size effect. In contrast, the family size effect exerted the dominant influence on accelerating the decoupling in rural Guangdong. Overall, the household effect inhibited decoupling in urban regions, but promoted decoupling in rural regions. (3) The decoupling efforts results suggest that the energy efficiency improvement played a major role in the decoupling efforts of urban Guangdong, while the decrease of family size in rural Guangdong was the leading contributor to the decoupling efforts.

Abstract:Decoupling of electricity CO 2 emissions (ECE) is pivotal in achieving China's "double carbon" goal. However, empirical studies primarily focus on the decoupling of ECE from the production side of a specific country or region, thereby ignoring the spatial separation of electricity production and consumption due to the highly connected electricity network. Decoupling of ECE from the consumption side is also crucial. In this study, the IPCC inventory method and quasi-input-output (QIO) model were comprehensively used to establish an electricity CO 2 emission accounting framework covering both the production and consumption sides. The Tapio and Logarithmic Mean Division Index (LMDI) models were used to explore the decoupling relationship between ECE and economic growth and the driving factors. Results ultimately show the following:(1) During 2007 to 2020, the decoupling situation experienced a process from weak decoupling to strong decoupling and finally to expansive negative decoupling; (2) The economically developed eastern regions and the western regions that are affluent in renewable energy resources showed different decoupling states; (3) Renewable energy in the southwest and nuclear electricity generation in the east promotes production-side decoupling, while fossil energy electricity generation in the north inhibited production-side decoupling. Industrial restructuring in the northeastern region and the western electricity-generating provinces has contributed to the decoupling at the consumption side. The research is helpful for China's national and provincial electricity sectors to set up a comprehensive emission reduction policy based on shared responsibility allocation from the production and consumption sides.

Abstract:Energy use and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decoupled from economic and human development is critical in achieving sustainable development. Resource and impact decoupling studies expanded to include well-being decoupling in the context of energy use. Additionally, multiple energy use and associated GHG measurements are developed and used in decoupling research. However, there are limited discussions about meanings of decoupling status when using different parameters, as well as exploring similarities behind the status across multiple decoupling relationships. This research first developed an overarching framework to evaluate decoupling relationships using various energy and GHG measurements and comprehensively identified the status of three decoupling relationships at the subnational level in China from 2000 to 2019 using the Tapio model. It also innovatively combined the Tapio decoupling model and decision tree analysis to reveal socio-economic features shared by provinces with the same status. It found that although weak resource decoupling and carbon impact decoupling from energy use from 2000 to 2019 are dominant, most provinces experienced negative decoupling between energy use and human development and weak decoupling between GHG emissions and HDI. When further evaluating the spatial-temporal patterns of three decoupling relationships, it was found that the improvement in HDI and GDP (per capita basis) slowed down during the 2015–2019 period, when the increase level in energy use and carbon emissions was still higher than the improvement in HDI and GDP. Spatially, although some provinces had strong decoupling between energy use and HDI, it was impossible for them to hold the status in the next cycles. The change in HDI and carbon emissions per capita was influenced by energy use structure, initial economic status, and population density. The decision tree analysis demonstrates that the similar feature for provinces achieving a decoupling in well-being, resource, and impact decoupling is final energy use per GDP reduced by >22% every five years. This finding does not only demonstrate one practical metric but also reveals the benefits of exploring three types of decoupling relationships together. These findings shed light on evaluating energy decoupling research at the subnational level to inform location-specific policies.

Abstract:Analyzing the relationship between economic development and carbon emissions is conducive to better energy saving and emission reduction. This study is based on the panel data of China’s carbon emissions, from 2009 to 2019, and quantitative analysis of the relationship between carbon emissions and economic development through the Tapio decoupling model and the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition model. The results show that: First, carbon emission and economic development are increasing year by year, and the development trend of economic growth rate and carbon emission growth rate presents the characteristics of consistency and stage. Second, China’s carbon emissions and economic development are basically in a weak decoupling state, and carbon emissions and economic development are positively correlated. Third, there are significant differences in decoupling indices among the four regions, mainly in that the central region is better than the eastern region, the eastern region is better than the northeast region, the northeast region is better than the western region, and the development of provinces in the region is unbalanced. Fourth, from the perspective of driving factors, the elasticity of population size and economic intensity can restrain the decoupling of carbon emissions, while the elasticity of energy intensity and carbon intensity have a positive effect. Finally, according to the results of empirical analysis, this paper focuses on promoting China’s emission reduction and energy sustainable development from the aspects of developing low-carbon and zero carbon technology, supporting new energy industries and promoting the construction of a carbon emission trading market.

Abstract:Under the requirements for high-quality development, the coordinated promotion of agricultural carbon emission reduction and agricultural product supply guarantee in China is crucial to hold the bottom line of national food security as well as promote agricultural green transformation and development. Based on such situation, from the perspective of decoupling effect, driving factors and the prediction, this paper uses panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020, takes the carbon emission formula, the “two-stage rolling” Tapio decoupling elasticity coefficient method, the spatial Durbin model and the Grey model optimized by the Simpson formula background value to quantify the relationship between agricultural carbon emission and agricultural product supply, analyze the driving effects of agricultural carbon emission reduction and agricultural product increase, and predict the decoupling state of agricultural carbon emission and agricultural product supply between 2021 and 2025, so as to draw a scientific basis that is conducive to the coordinated promotion of agricultural carbon emission reduction and agricultural product supply guarantee in China. The result shows that: (1) The decoupling state of agricultural carbon emission and agricultural product supply shows generally “the eastern and central regions are better than the western regions” in China, and the decoupling state has improved significantly year by year. Green technology innovation (GTI), agricultural carbon emission and agricultural product supply in China have significant spatial differences and spatial auto-correlation, which shows the spatial factors cannot be ignored; (2) Green technology innovation and agricultural carbon emission in local and adjacent provinces are both in an inverted “U-shaped” relationship, meaning that high level green technology innovation is an effective way to reduce carbon emission. Though green technology innovation and agricultural product supply in local and adjacent provinces are both in a positive “U-shaped” relationship, but the minimum value of lnGTI is greater than 0, which indicates that current level of green technology has been raised to a certain level, effectively improving the output of agricultural products; (3) Compared with those in 2016–2020 in China, it is projected that in 2021–2025 the decoupling state of agricultural carbon emission and agricultural product supply will be improved significantly, and the provinces below the optimal state will leave the extremely unreasonable strong negative decoupling state, mainly show recessionary decoupling and recessionary connection. Our findings provide Chinese decision-makers with corresponding references to formulate accountable and scientific regional policies in order to achieve high-quality development of agriculture and realize “Double carbon” target in China.

Abstract:In-depth analysis of the decoupling state between cultivated land carbon emissions and cultivated land use factors can provide a basis for coordinating the relationship between food security and ecological environment. On the base of systematically calculating the carbon source of cultivated land, this paper calculated the carbon emission of cultivated land in China’s main agricultural production areas from 2000 to 2020, and explored its temporal and spatial pattern and evolution process. Then, using the LMDI decomposition method and the improved kaya identity, the factors affecting the carbon emissions of cultivated land are divided into five effects: structure, economy, technology, society and population, and then the Tapio decoupling theory is used to analyze the relationship between carbon emissions and these five effects. At the same time, to explore the further relationship between carbon emissions and cultivated land structure, we also studied the decoupling state between carbon emissions and the cultivated land area of 6 main crops. The results showed: during the study period, carbon emissions experienced three stages: fluctuating growth, accelerated growth and slow decline. In the most recent stage, structural, economic and population effects still have some impact on the carbon emissions of cultivated land, changes in cultivated land area where cotton, sugar and tobacco are planted will still affect its carbon emissions. To intervene, policy measures such as promoting the use of clean energy, increasing agricultural imports, and increasing carbon taxes for some industries can be considered.

Abstract:China faces the formidable challenge of balancing economic growth with carbon emissions reduction. Therefore, clarifying the decoupling relationship between the two is crucial for formulating effective carbon mitigation policies and achieving this balance. Previous studies often investigate the decoupling at a static perspective that may introduce some errors. In this paper, we propose to conduct such research from a dynamic perspective, and we apply it to carry out a study focusing on China’s provincial industrial carbon emissions (ICE) and industrial value-add (IVA) from 2001 to 2020. Additionally, using the Log-Mean Divisia Index (LMDI), we further explored the factors influencing changes in ICE. The results underscore the necessity of a dynamic perspective due to the observed non-linear interannual variation observed in ICE, IVA, industrial energy consumption (IEC), and population. Most provinces exhibit an increasing decoupling trend between ICE and IVA, with the majority still in a status of weak decoupling over the long-term interval (2001–2020). Among the four factors analyzed, energy intensity and economic intensity emerge as the primary contributor to decreasing and increasing ICE, respectively. Carbon intensity and population exhibit both positive and negative effects on increasing ICE, with the positive generally outweighing the negative. To effectively reduce carbon emissions, China should tailor differentiated policies for each provincial region considering both their absolute emission amounts and decoupling evolution trajectories. Furthermore, efforts should be made to expand the use of renewable energy, optimize the energy mix, and adopt cleaner technologies.

Abstract:Beijing, the capital of China, is experiencing a serious lack of water, which is becoming a main factor in the restriction of the development of the social economy. Due to the low economic efficiency and high consumption proportion of agricultural water use, the relationship between economic growth and agricultural water use is worth investigating. The “decoupling” index is becoming increasingly popular for identifying the degree of non-synchronous variation between resource consumption and economic growth. However, few studies address the decoupling between the crop water consumption and agricultural economic growth. This paper involves the water footprint (WF) to assess the water consumption in the crop production process. After an evaluation of the crop WF in Beijing, this paper applies the decoupling indicators to examine the occurrence of non-synchronous variation between the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) and crop WF in Beijing from 1981 to 2013. The results show that the WF of crop production in 2013 reduced by 62.1% compared to that in 1980 — in total, 1.81 × 109 m 3 . According to the decoupling states, the entire study period is divided into three periods. From 1981 to 2013, the decoupling states represented seventy-five percent of the years from 1981 to 1992 (Period I) with a moderate decoupling degree, more than ninety percent from 1993 to 2003 (Period II) with a very strong decoupling degree and moved from non-decoupling to strong decoupling from 2004 to 2013 (Period III). Adjusting plantation structure, technology innovation and raising awareness of water-saving, may promote the decoupling degree between WF and agricultural GDP in Beijing.

Abstract:Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy, and agricultural nonpoint source pollution and carbon emissions are the main environmental problems limiting the development of the agricultural economy. This study takes the Yangtze River Delta as the research object and measures agricultural carbon emissions and nonpoint source pollution in the study area from 2010 to 2020 respectively. The Tapio decoupling model is used to study types of decoupling between agricultural pollution and carbon reduction and economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta from 2010 to 2020, and the GM (1,1) model is used to predict the decoupling relationship between the agricultural environment and economic growth over the next ten years. The results show the following: (1) Agricultural COD emissions come mainly from livestock and poultry breeding, dropped from 1,130,120 tons in 2010 to 908,460 tons in 2020. Agricultural TN and TP emissions come mainly from plantations. Agricultural TN emissions dropped from 892,310 tons in 2010 to 788,020 tons in 2020. Agricultural TP emissions dropped from 149,590 tons in 2010 to130,770 tons in 2020. Agricultural carbon emissions dropped from 17,115,900 tons in 2010 to 15,786,600 tons in 2020, and come mainly from agricultural fertilizer and diesel fuel and pig breeding. (2) The decoupling effect of agricultural pollution reduction and carbon reduction in the Yangtze River Delta and economic growth has been in a long-term state, with negative decoupling occurring in a few regions, mainly in 2011, 2014 and 2020. (3) In the next ten years, except for 2021, when the coordination between agricultural pollution reduction and economic growth is poor, the two show good decoupling in the remaining years. Based on the results, this study makes recommendations on how to carry out comprehensive environmental management and promote green agricultural development.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the interdependence between China's economy and carbon emissions can better serve China's transition towards a low-carbon economy, and can also provide reference for other developing countries. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the dependence of China's economy on CO2 emissions: (i) the Tapio decoupling model was applied to quantify the decoupling elasticity between China's economy and CO2 emissions; (ii) the structure decomposition technique was utilized to quantity the contribution of China's economic structure to the decoupling elasticity; (iii) the combined decomposition model which combined Cobb–Douglas (C-D) production function with Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) technique and was solved the residual problem was employed to identify more driving factors (labor input, investment, carbon coefficient, energy structure, energy intensity, economic structure, and technology state) affecting the decoupling elasticity. The main results were as follows: (i) The decoupling elasticity showed a downward trend during the whole period, and the decoupling state was characterized by two types: expansive negative decoupling (2002–2005) and weak decoupling (2000–2002 and 2005–2014). (ii) The industry sector played the most negative effect on the decoupling process expect 2013–2014. From the cumulative effect, the contribution of six sectors to promote decoupling effect was ranked as follows: Construction > Agriculture > Trade > Other > Transport > Industry. (iii) The most critical factor driving the increased CO2 emissions was the investment effect, accounting for 145.34% of the cumulative total CO2 emissions, while the energy intensity effect contributed to a cumulative reduction in CO2 emissions of 1443.72 Mt. Finally, some policy recommendations were offered to achieve the decoupling of China's economic growth and carbon emissions.

Abstract:The construction industry is one of the key industries for driving energy conservation in China. Decoupling of the construction industry development from energy consumption has become the focus of the green economy. This study applied an elastic decoupling model to explore the decoupling status between energy consumption and output value in China’s construction industry. Log-Mean Divisia Index was utilized to explain the factors influencing decoupling from the perspectives of labor, efficiency, and investment. Results indicate that weak decoupling is the main status during 2000–2015. This means Chinese construction industrial development is no longer occurring at the expense of faster energy consumption growth. The labor factor is the dominant factor in the appearance of the decoupling status, and its cumulative increase impact on energy productivity is 230%, followed by efficiency factors (135%). Investment factors fail to drive the construction industry to a decoupling development state in most years, but there have been improvements during the 12th “Five-Year Plan.”

Decoupling Between Economic Growth and Carbon Emissions: Based on Four Major Regions in China

Abstract:This paper constructs a decoupling model for four major economic regions of China, based on the Tapio decoupling index method and VAR model for carbon emissions to compare and measure the impact of decoupling between carbon emissions and economic growth in China during 1997 to 2019. The results show that the degree of decoupling between economic growth and carbon emissions varies among different economic regions, and the decoupling status is better in all regions at the beginning of the 21st century. In general, the decoupling status in the eastern and western regions is more ideal than that in the central and northeastern regions. The impulse response and variance decomposition results show that renewable energy consumption could always reduce the growth of carbon emission intensity, and its effects are most significant in the western region. The above findings help to reveal the link between economic growth, renewable energy consumption and carbon emissions in China in recent years, and how to ensure a stable economic growth in China while increasing the share of clean energy consumption in each region to achieve carbon neutrality.
Decoupling and Decomposition Analysis of Land Natural Capital Utilization and Economic Growth: A Case Study in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China

Abstract:In order to reduce the depletion of land natural capital and develop economy simultaneously, it is necessary to study how to achieve the strong decoupling relationship between them. However, so far such studies have been relatively limited. Thus, taking the case of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, this paper firstly analyzes the state of land natural capital utilization in 1999–2017 by using improved ecological footprint. Then, decoupling state is quantified by Tapio decoupling model. Last, major driving factors on the decoupling relationship are explored with combination of LMDI decomposition and Kaya identity equation. Results showed that: (1) Both natural capital flows and stock depletion of cultivated land decrease obviously during the transition to corn-based intensive ecological agriculture. Grassland and water are the most unsustainable development sectors among all land types with their stock depletion intensified. Forest land and construction land could basically meet the consumer demand, but the flow occupancy of construction land is the fastest-growing segment. (2) Decoupling relationship is in an alternating state between weak decoupling and strong decoupling in 1999–2017. Wherein, the cultivated land and forest land showed a preferred decoupling state, followed by grassland, while the water and construction land showed the unfavorable expansive negative decoupling and weak decoupling. (3) Decomposition results show that intensity effect is the major factor that promotes the decoupling while economic effect inhibits the decoupling, but this negative impact is weakening in the process of industrial transformation. The other three factors affect less on the decoupling. This study has a certain reference value to construct an ecological civilization in eco-fragile regions and formulate relevant policies on the increase of land natural capital efficiency.
