Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.
Design of highly stretchable deep eutectic solvent‐based ionic gel electrolyte with high ionic conductivity by the addition of zwitterion ion dissociators for flexible supercapacitor

Abstract:Nonvolatile deep eutectic solvent (DES) electrolytes with good electrochemical stability have recently emerged as promising electrolytes for energy storage devices. In this report, for the first time a polymerized zwitterionic molecule was introduced and a series of hybrid cross‐linked zwitterion‐containing copolymer DES gels are synthesized via UV initiated free‐radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA), sulfobetaine vinylimidazole (VIPS) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) monomers, in situ within DES, which is prepared from 1:2 M ratio of choline chloride and ethylene glycol. Systematically varying the AA:VIPS molar ratio and copolymer contents within the copolymer network enables one to widely tune the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity of the poly(AA‐co‐VIPS) DES gels. The tensile strength of P(AA‐co‐VIPS) DES gels significantly increased from 28 kPa to 176 kPa with fracture strain from 720% to 1370%, while the ionic conductivity of copolymer DES gels remains high from 2.7 to 4.1 mS cm−1 with the increase of copolymer content from 25 wt % to 45 wt%. A copolymer DES gel not only enables a supercapacitor deliver high capacitance of 71.52 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, and retains ∼97% of its capacitance after 2000 cycles, but also achieves outstanding capacitive performance over wide temperature range.

Abstract:Hydrogels, with excellent flexibility, leakage-free, and high safety, are considered as desired electrolytes to build flexible quasi-solid-state supercapacitors. Sodium polyacrylate acid (PANa) hydrogel possesses high water retention capacity and ionic conductivity, but its uncontrollable swelling hinders its practical applications. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to fabricate flexible hybridized electrolyte, where the PANa hydrogel is restricted inside the interlayer spacing of GO membranes. The high-speed spin-treatment regularized GO membrane possesses uniform interlayer channels, where the hydrogel precursor can be infiltrated and in situ polymerized inside the interlayer spacing. Furthermore, the interaction between the PANa polymer chain and GO flakes can prevent structural deformation and uncontrollable swelling of the lamellar membrane. Therefore, the PANa-GO electrolytes exhibit excellent mechanical properties (24.36 MPa), high ionic conductivity (61.03 mS cm(-1)), and outstanding antiswelling ability. Moreover, the supercapacitor device assembled by the PANa-GO-15 electrolyte and MnO2 electrodes exhibits a high specific capacitance of 123.1 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and good rate ability. Even under bending or low-temperature conditions, the flexible device can still maintain its energy storage ability. This novel structural regularization and confinement approach may offer a new option for designing robust, antiswelling, and high ionic conductivity flexible electrolytes.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are potential replacement of liquid electrolytes due to their much less flammability and leakage. Among them, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes have several advantages including improved processability and electrochemical stability. Unfortunately, poor ionic conductivity and mechanical properties due to high plasticizer concentration hinder their practical applications. Herein, we address these issues by exploiting the solvation effect in the electrolyte through tuning the amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and lithium salts. Moreover, by blending with porous carbon (PC) the mechanical integrity of the PVDF-HFP electrolytes is substantially enhanced due to improved interfacial bonding and specific surface area. The appropriate value of electrical conductivity and highly porous morphology of PC also meet the ionic transport and electronic insulation requirements. With the absorbed residual NMP as plasticizer and complexed with Li ions to formLi[NMP](3)(+) , ionic conductivity and amorphicity are improved. By elucidating the solvent and salt concentration interplay, Li-ion conductivity of up to 0.56 mS cm(-,) wide electrochemical window of 5 V versus Li/Li+ and 1000 h of cycling stability (versus Li, 0.2 mA/cm(2)) are obtained. These findings afford a novel electrolyte design guideline for enhancing interfacial compatibility and cycling through hybridization and ion solvation to develop practical lithium batteries.

Abstract:This work introduces a new type of "water‐in‐eutectogel" electrolyte (WiETG) with high safety, good stretchability, and high ionic conductivity. This enables LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 full cells with WiETG to exhibit high energy efficiency (86%, 1 C), good long‐term cycle stability (89% after 500 cycles at 5 C), as well as good low temperature performance. The development of high safety lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) is greatly impeded by the flammability and leakage concerns of typical organic solvent‐based electrolytes. As one of the alternative classes of electrolytes, hydrogel electrolytes exhibit high safety, high flexibility, low cost, and are benign to the environment. However, the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of typical hydrogel electrolytes restricts the operating voltage of battery cells. Here, a new class of "water‐in‐eutectogel (WiETG)" electrolyte is reported, fabricated by combining a hydrogel with a "deep eutectic solvent" (LiTFSI in acetamide). The obtained WiETG electrolyte exhibits non‐flammability, high ionic conductivity, and a wide ESW. LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 cells with the WiETG electrolyte exhibit good cycling stability, high flexibility, and high safety. This newly developed WiETG electrolyte not only broadens the ESW of typical hydrogel electrolytes, but also opens a new perspective on future directions and guidance for the design of high safety electrolytes for flexible LIBs and beyond.

Abstract:The development of eco-friendly and light-weighted solid-state electrolytes with a wide electrochemical window is critical to apply flexible energy storage devices for powering wearable and implantable electronics. Herein, we report the first demonstration of a quasi solid-state hydrogel electrolyte leveraging the formation of "interfacial wetting water" for facile two-dimensional ion transports instead of typical diffusion in bulk-like water. The hydrogel electrolyte exhibits a wide electrochemical window (2.5 V) in electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC) cell with an extremely effective low salt concentration (6.8 m), 3.1 times lower than the well-known water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE, 21 m), and a small water retention (24 wt%). Besides, a significant toughness (ultimate tensile strength of 420 kPa and elongation of 6,000%) is achieved. The flexible supercapacitor demonstrates the high specific energy density of 39.1 Wh•kg−1 at 0.5 A•g−1 and 7.6 Wh•kg−1 at power density of 6218 W•kg−1, as well as a subdued self-discharge profile. This interfacial water dominated hydrogel electrolyte provides new directions in designing high-voltage hydrogel electrolyte for safe and sustainable soft energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have received increasing attention due to their high power density, long cycle life and excellent safety, however, their limited energy density restrains their practical applications. Here, a designed organohydrogel electrolyte strategy boosted the electrochemical potential window (ESW) for flexible all-solid supercapacitor was demonstrated, by which a record-high ESW of 5 V is achieved, accompanied by improved cyclic stability and wider temperature adaptability. Hydrogen-bond of water to DMSO was found to be competitive with cationic hydration, and a wide ESW was achieved at lower salt and DMSO concentrations. DMSO-H 2 O/alginate/PAAm hydrogel electrolytes were prepared by simple solvent exchange, and it was found that the synergistic interactions between DMSO, water and hydrogel significantly reduced water activity in the hydrogel and realized the high ESW. Moreover, Dimethyl sulfoxide forms abundant hydrogen bonds with water and the hydrogel skeleton, which significantly improves the mechanical properties, freezing resistance, and temperature adaptability of the hydrogel electrolyte. The flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor assembled based on DMSO-H 2 O/alginate/PAAm hydrogel electrolyte and interdigital electrodes exhibits 2.4 V ESW, stability under different folding angles, adaptability to different temperatures ranging from −20 to 70 °C, and integration performance. The device demonstrates excellent cycling stability and retains 98.66% of capacitance after 10,000 cycles, suggesting that it has the potential to meet the requirements of flexible electronics.

Abstract:Biodegradable hydrogel electrolytes are particularly attractive in the fabrication of all-solid-state supercapacitors due to environmental benignity and avoiding of leakage. The introduction of "water-in-salt" (WIS) electrolytes into hydrogels will further broaden the electrochemical stability window of aqueous supercapacitors significantly. Meanwhile, the addition of an organic co-solvent can effectively overcome the inevitable salt precipitation and extend the temperature adaptability. Herein, an in situ cross-linking approach was demonstrated without any extra binder to obtain a "dimethyl sulfoxide/water-in-salt"-based (DWIS) chitosan hydrogel electrolyte. Interestingly, the addition of 4-7 mol L(-1)of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salts not only conforms to the criterion of WIS, but also promoted the successful gelation through the supramolecular complexation between Li+-solvated complexes and chitosan chains. A hydrogel-based all-solid-state supercapacitor was fabricated using the DWIS chitosan hydrogel as the electrolyte and separator while nitrogen-doped graphene hydrogel (NG) was used as the electrode. The optimized supercapacitor with a wide operating voltage of 2.1 V showed a high specific capacitance of 107.6 F g(-1)at 1 A g(-1), remarkable capacitance retention of 80.1 % after 5000 cycles, a superior energy density of 62.9 Wh kg(-1)at a power density of 1025.5 W kg(-1), and excellent temperature stability in the range of -20 to 70 degrees C. These findings suggest that the as-prepared hydrogel electrolyte holds great potential in the practical application of high-performance solid-state energy storage devices.

Abstract:The gel electrolyte constructed with deep eutectic solvent (DES) and acrylate‐based copolymer enables a direct writing electrolyte layer for patterning in flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs), which can maintain its excellent optical transparency, electrical, and mechanical properties over a wide span of temperature ranging from −40 to 150°C. With the increasing interest in the application of electrochromism to flexible and wearable electronics in recent years, flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs) that can function at extreme temperatures are required. However, the functionalities of flexible ECDs are severely hampered by the inadequate choice of electrolytes, which might ultimately result in performance fading during low‐ and high‐temperature operations. Here, we develop a deep eutectic solvent (DES)‐based gel electrolyte that can maintain its optical, electrical, and mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures (−40 to 150°C), exhibiting an extremely high visible‐range transmittance over 90%, ion conductivity of 0.63 mS cm−1, and fracture strain exceeding 2000%. Owing to the excellent processability of the DES‐based electrolytes, provided by dynamic interactions such as the lithium and hydrogen bonding between the DES and polymer matrix, a directly written patterning in ECDs is realized for the first time. The fabricated ECDs exhibit an excellent electrochromic behavior superior to the behavior of the ECDs fabricated with traditional gel electrolytes. The introduction of such DES‐based electrolytes is expected to pave the way for a widespread application of electrochromic products.

Abstract:In the present work, we successfully prepared a conductive eutecticgel with good mechanical properties, adhesion properties and excellent antifreeze properties by mixing ethylene glycol (EG) as the hydrogen bonding donor and zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) as the hydrogen bonding acceptor in different molar ratios to form an anhydrous deep eutectic solvent (DES). Water-soluble cellulose acetate (WSCA), monomer acrylamide (AM), initiator ammonium persulfate (APS) and cross-linking agent MBA (N, N′-methylene bis(acrylamide)) were added into the prepared DES to form a eutecticgel by a simple one-pot cooking strategy. The mechanical properties of the eutecticgel were strengthened by cross-linking of WSCA and PAM chains through hydrogen bonding, and the addition of the DES and ZnCl 2 increased the freezing-resistant property of the eutecticgel. The stresses of DES-WSCA/PAM eutecticgel increased with the content of WSCA. The stress of DES-WSCA/PAM eutecticgel gradually becomes larger with the increase of WSCA content, and it can reach 184.07 kPa at 2 % WSCA content. In addition, the capacitor prepared by DES-WSCA/PAM eutecticgel shows excellent performance, with a voltage window of 2 V and a capacitance of 371.5 F/g, which can be operated stably for a long period, and the capacitance can still reach 145.4 F/g even under the condition of −40 °C. Moreover, DES-WSCA/PAM eutecticgel capacitor has a long service life, its capacitance retention rate and coulombic efficiency can reach more than 91 % and 95 %, respectively, after 10,000 times of charging and discharging tests. In summary, DES-WSCA/PAM eutecticgel electrolyte is an ideal material for capacitors, which opens up a new way of thinking for the development of multifunctional cellulose-based eutecticgels with low-temperature resistance, good mechanical properties, and non-irritating for wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:A novel cheap eutectogel (ETG) membrane based on the deep eutectic solvent (DES) immobilized poly (vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene) (PVDF-HFP) is proposed as a solid electrolyte for safe lithium metal batteries in this study. The composition of DES is optimized, which is prepared by mixing the N-methylacetamide (NMAC) and the lithium bis [(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imid (LiTFSI) with a molar ratio of 4:1. The eutectogel is formed by incorporating 70 wt% DES into the PVDF-HFP, which is non-flammable and shows excellent mechanical properties. This ETG membrane electrolyte with a thickness about 25 mu m possess a high ionic conductivity (3.05 x 10-4 S cm- 1) at room temperature and a wide electrochemical stability window (-5 V). The Li//ETG//LiFePO4 full cells deliver an acceptable discharge capacity of -133.9 mAh g-1 at 0.1C and room temperature after 100 charge-discharge cycles. The ETG membrane electrolyte can also endow the Li//ETG// LiFePO4 pouch cell with flexibility and withstanding abuse operations, like nail penetration and cutting. We expect that the flexible and non-flammable eutectogel membrane will have implications for the use of DES based ionic liquids in the synthesis of advanced solid-state electrolytes for safer lithium batteries.

Abstract:Due to the safety problems caused by the use of flammable organic electrolytes in lithium batteries, it is urgent to develop new solid electrolytes with higher safety. Deep eutectic solvent (DES), as a very promising flame-retardant electrolyte system, has limited its application due to its liquid properties and poor compatibility with lithium metal. Herein, we report a DES-based self-healing polymer (DSHP) electrolyte for quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries. The electrolyte was prepared by in-situ polymerization of bis (3-amino-propyl)-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-NH 2 ) and toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) monomers in a DES-based electrolyte with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as an additive. The polymer network effectively improves the compatibility of DES with lithium metal and maintains a high ionic conductivity (0.60 mS cm −1 at 30 °C). At the same time, the well-designed siloxane-based DSHP electrolyte not only exhibits self-healing property, but also demonstrates non-flammability advantage with a wide electrochemical voltage window (4.5 V vs Li/Li + ) and a high Li + migration number (0.69). Therefore, the symmetric Li | DSHP | Li cell exhibits long-term cycle stability (>1400 h). The quasi-solid-state lithium battery with DSHP electrolyte coupled with lithium anode and LiFePO 4 cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 151.6 mA h g −1 . More importantly, the DSHP-based pouch cell exhibits excellent flexibility during the deformation process. This work provides a valuable method to design safe and high energy quasi-solid-state lithium batteries.

Herein, we propose a new strategy for the synthesis of a green gel polymer electrolyte employing polyacrylamide (PAM) as a cross-linking network based on a Li-salt containing a deep eutectic solvent (DES). Remarkably, the addition of lignin and MXene contribute significantly to boost the performance of the device with DES gel polyelectrolyte, mainly through the Lewis acid–base interactions between the abundant functional groups (−F and −OH) and TFSI– group. We have also confirmed the occurrence of this interaction and the mechanism of improving conductivity and operating voltage by molecular dynamics simulations. Consequently, the device delivers a wide potential window of 0–2.4 V and the highest weight energy density of 42.6 Wh kg–1. This work offers new insight into the fabrication of green and flexible devices with high energy density without producing electronic waste.

Abstract:Polymeric conductive hydrogels have been highlighted for use in flexible electronics, and there is still a challenge to design and fabricate a high-performance hydrogel electrolyte with integrated and multiple properties, such as sustainability, stretchability and compressibility, ionic conductivity, antibacterial property, strain sensitivity, and low-temperature tolerance. Herein, chitosan (CS) derived poly(aprotic/protic ionic liquids) (CS-PAPILs) are facilely prepared by taking the structural and sustainable features of chitosan and betaine hydrochloride, which are used as a functional component for the fabrication of CS-PAPILs/polyacrylamide (PAM)/LiCl (CS-PAPILs/PAM/LiCl) double-network (DN) hydrogel electrolyte via an in situ polymerization of AM and then a soaking strategy in LiCl aqueous solution. The achieved DN hydrogels exhibit tunable mechanical performance (tensile strength of 70-900 kPa, elastic modulus of 31.5-484 kPa, high compressibility (4450 kPa at 80 % strain), superior low-temperature tolerance (freezing point < -85 degrees C), anti-dehydration performance, high ionic conductivity at 25/-50 degrees C (94.8/4.6 mS cm(-1)), and excellent antibacterial activity. As a proof of concept, an assembled flexible and anti-freezing supercapacitor by the as-prepared DN hydrogel electrolyte demonstrated a high specific capacitance of 108.4F/g (at 2 A/g) and impressive cycling stability over 50,000 cycles at temperature as low as -50 degrees C. Furthermore, a wearable strain sensor based on the DN hydrogel was also demonstrated, and the sensor can be successfully attached to the human joints to monitor various human motions.

Abstract:Development of high-voltage electrolytes with non-flammability is significantly important for future energy storage devices. Aqueous electrolytes are inherently non-flammable, easy to handle, and their electrochemical stability windows (ESWs) can be considerably expanded by increasing electrolyte concentrations. However, further breakthroughs of their ESWs encounter bottlenecks because of the limited salt solubility, leading to that most of the high-energy anode materials can hardly function reversibly in aqueous electrolytes. Here, by introducing a non-flammable ionic liquid as co-solvent in a lithium salt/water system, we develop a "water in salt/ionic liquid" (WiSIL) electrolyte with extremely low water content. In such WiSIL electrolyte, commercial niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) material can operate at a low potential (−1.6 V versus Ag/AgCl) and contribute its full capacity. Consequently, the resultant Nb2O5-based aqueous lithium-ion capacitor is able to operate at a high voltage of 2.8 V along with long cycling stability over 3000 cycles, and displays comparable energy and power performance (51.9 Wh kg−1 at 0.37 kW kg−1 and 16.4 Wh kg−1 at 4.9 kW kg−1) to those using non-aqueous electrolytes but with improved safety performance and manufacturing efficiency.

Abstract:A low‐solvation zwitterionic gel polymer electrolyte for sodium‐ion capacitors is developed to address the safety concerns of liquid electrolytes and lower ion‐solvent interactions. The zwitterions help regulate the solvation configurations and reduce the desolvation barriers. Furthermore, an S‐ and N‐based inorganic‐rich interphase is constructed for reducing the Na+ ion diffusion barriers and improving the electrochemical compatibility. Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) show high energy/power densities owing to the special dual‐ion energy storage mechanism with cation intercalation and anion adsorption. However, the strong ion‐solvent interactions make it difficult for interfacial ion desolvation, which not only limits the ion transport kinetics, but also results in the solvent co‐intercalation into electrode materials. Here, an advanced zwitterionic gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is developed to weaken the ion‐solvent interactions. The 3‐(1‐vinyl‐3‐imidazolio) propanesulfonate (VIPS) zwitterions help to lower the desolvation barriers, enabling fast ion transfer kinetics for constructing stable quasi‐solid‐state SICs. Furthermore, the decomposition of VIPS contributes to the formation of S‐ and N‐based inorganic interphase on the surface of hard carbon anode, which reduces the Na+ ion diffusion barriers and improves electrochemical compatibility. The designed Zwitterionic GPE can stabilize 4.0 V hard carbon//activated carbon SICs with 95.3% capacity retention after 9000 cycles, showing a high energy density of 140.2 Wh kg−1. This study highlights the regulation of ion‐solvent chemistry and provides a guiding principle in electrolyte design for advanced hybrid ion capacitors.

Abstract:As a common flexible sensing device, gels are widely used in electronic skin, personalized health monitoring, and smart manufacturing. However, gel suffers from temperature sensitivity, long polymerization times or thickness limitations. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have abundant hydrogen bond networks and low saturated vapor pressure, which can accelerate the frontal polymerization of ionic gels, and overcome the temperature sensitivity problem. Here, we showed how choline chloride (ChCl)-glycerol (Gly) DES can be used to create ionic gels with different properties and functions by combining them with different monomers (acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) and itaconic acid (IA)). Subsequently, we revealed the rapid gelation mechanism of PAM-ChCl-Gly ionic gel from multiple perspectives by density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation, which was then applied to flexible sensing. The experimental results showed that the PAM-ChCl-Gly ionic gel had excellent tensile properties, high transparency, self-adhesion and stability. In addition, its gelation time was only 90 s without heating. ChCl-Gly DES offered a plentiful and stable hydrogen bonding network. PAM-ChCl-Gly ionic gels can detect tiny pressure and strain changes, making them suitable for flexible sensing. This greatly enriched the theoretical research foundation of DES-based ionic gels and broadened their application areas.
