Abstract:Land-use and land-cover (LULC) is an important component for sustainable natural resource management, and there are considerable impacts of the rapid anthropogenic LULC changes on environment, ecosystem services, and land surface processes. One of the significant adverse implications of the rapidly changing urban LULC is the increase in the Land Surface Temperature (LST) resulting in the urban heat island effect. In this study, we used a time series of Landsat satellite images from 1992 to 2020 in the Srinagar city of the Kashmir valley, North-western Himalaya, India to understand the linkages between LULC dynamics and LST, derived from the archived images using the Google Earth Engine (GEE). Furthermore, the relationship between LST, urban heat island (UHI), and biophysical indices, i.e., Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), was also analysed. LULC change detection analysis from 1992 to 2020 revealed that the built-up area has increased significantly from 12% in 1992 to 40% in 2020, while the extent of water bodies has decreased from 6% in 1992 to 4% in 2020. The area under plantations has decreased from 26% in 1992 to 17% in 2020, and forests have decreased from 4 to 2% during the same period. Urban sprawl of Srinagar city has resulted in the depletion of natural land covers, modification of natural drainage, and loss of green and blue spaces over the past four decades. The study revealed that the maximum LST in the city has increased by 11°C between 1992 and 2020. During the same period of time, the minimum LST in the city has increased by 5°C, indicating the impact of urbanization on the city environment, which is reflected by the observed changes in various environmental indices. UHI impact in the city is quite evident with the maximum LST at the city centre having increased from 13.03°C in 1992 to 22.01°C in 2020. The findings shall serve as a vital source of knowledge for urban planners and decision-makers in developing sustainable urban environmental management strategies for Srinagar city.

Abstract:The dynamic interplay between urbanization and its impacts on climate is a subject of recent concern, particularly in rapidly urbanizing cities of Pakistan. This research investigated the spatio-temporal effects of urban growth in terms of Land Use Land Cover changes on the thermal environment (Land Surface Temperature) of the Sialkot city, Pakistan using satellite data spanning four distinct time periods (1989, 2000, 2009 and 2020) and predicted changes for year 2030 by employing Cellular Automata Markov Chain Model. Satellite imagery (Landsat 5, 7 and 8) was processed, and maximum likelihood supervised classification was done to generate LULC maps for each of the aforementioned years. In addition to LULC classification, thermal bands of satellite data (for summer and winter) were processed to compute Land Surface Temperature (LST) of the city. The prediction of LULC changes and LST was done for year 2030 using Cellular Automata Markov Chain Model. The accuracy of classified and prediction maps was checked using Kappa Index. The LULC analysis revealed 4.14% increase in the built-up area and 3.43% decrease in vegetation cover of the city during 1989 to 2020. Both land covers are expected to change in the future (year 2030) by + 1.31% (built-up) and − 1.1% (vegetation). Furthermore, a declining trend in the barren land and water bodies was also observed over time. These LULC changes were found affecting the LST of study area. The transformation of vegetation cover into built-up area resulted in an increase in LST over time. A notable rise of 4.5 °C (summer) and 5.7 °C (winter) in the mean LST of Sialkot was observed during 1989 to 2020 and further increases are anticipated in year 2030. This study calls for attention of the policy makers to reduce human impact on the local climate of the city. The study will also help city developers in analyzing the urban population growth trend, finding suitable location to built new infrastructure by governmental authorities and how the rising temperature can affect energy demand and agriculture production of the city in future.

Machine learning-based assessment and simulation of land use modification effects on seasonal and annual land surface temperature variations

Abstract:Rapid urban sprawl adversely impacts the local climate and the ecosystem components. Islamabad, one of South Asia's green and environment-friendly capitals, has experienced major Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes over the past three decades consequently, elevating the seasonal and annual Land Surface Temperature (LST) in planned and unplanned urban areas. The focus of this study was to quantify the fluctuations in LULC and LST in planned and unplanned urban areas using Landsat data and Machine Learning algorithms involving the Support Vector Machine (SVM) over the 1990-2020 data period. Moreover, hybrid Cellular Automata-Markov (CA-Markov) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were employed to project the future changes in LULC and annual LST, respectively, for the years 2035 and 2050. The findings of the study reveal a distinct difference in seasonal and annual LST in planned and unplanned areas. Results showed an increase of ∼22 % in the built-up area but vegetation and bare soil decreased by ∼10 % and ∼12 %, respectively. Built-up land showed a maximum annual mean LST followed by bare-soil and vegetative surfaces. Seasonal analysis showed that summer months experience the highest LST, followed by spring, autumn and winter. Future projections revealed that the built-up areas (∼27 % in 2020) are likely to increase to ∼37 % and ∼50 %, and the areas under the highest annual mean LST class i.e., ≥28 °C are likely to increase to ∼19 % and ∼21 % in planned, and ∼38 % and ∼42 % in unplanned urban areas for the years 2035 and 2050, respectively. Planned areas have better temperature control with urban green spaces, and controlled infrastructure. The Capital Development Authority of Islamabad may be advised to control the expansion of built-up areas, grow urban forests, and thus mitigate the possible Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect.

Abstract:Human activities are altering the existing patterns of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) on a global scale. However, long-term trends of LULC and LST are largely unknown in many remote mountain areas such as the Karakorum. . The objective of our study therefore was to evaluate the historical changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in an alpine environment located in Islamabad Capital Territory, Pakistan. We used Landsat satellite pictures (namely Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI) from the years 1988, 2002, and 2016 and applied the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) approach to categorize land use classes. Land Surface Temperatures (LST) were calculated using the thermal bands (6, 10, and 11) of Landsat series data. The correlation between the Human Modification Index (HMI) and LULC as well as LST was evaluated by utilizing data from Google Earth Engine (GEE). Over the study period, the urbanized area increased by 9.94%, whilst the agricultural and bare soil areas decreased by 3.81% and 3.94%, respectively. The findings revealed a significant change in the LULC with a decrease of 1.99% in vegetation. The highest LST class exhibited a progressive trend, with an increase from 12.27% to 48.48%. Based on the LST analysis, the built-up area shows the highest temperature, followed by the barren, agricultural, and vegetation categories. Similarly, the HMI for different LST categories indicates that higher LST categories have higher levels of human alteration compared to lower LST categories, with a strong correlation (R-value = 0.61) between HMI and LST. The findings can be utilized to promote sustainable urban management and for biodiversity conservation efforts. The work also has the potential of utilizing it to protect delicate ecosystems from human interference and to formulate strategies and regulations for sustainable urban growth, including aspects of land utilization and zoning, reduction of urban heat stress, and urban infrastructure.

Abstract:This study addresses the effects of dietary adherence, phenylalanine (phe) levels, and age on performance of executive functioning (EF) tasks in children and adolescents with phenylketonuria (PKU). We herein collate formerly discrete findings to understand the relationship among actual clinical parameters and EF in PKU. Fifteen subjects (age range 8–20 years) with PKU were compared with the normative sample on the Delis–Kaplan EF Battery and on the Wechsler Abbreviated Scales of Intelligence to examine the relationship between EF skills, phe levels, age, and dietary adherence. At the time of the assessment, the mean age of participants was 14.8 years, mean lifetime phe levels ranged from 216 to 1200 μM (mean 594 μM); and concurrent phe levels ranged from 222 to 1730 μM (mean 660 μM). Children and adolescents with PKU showed lower performance in several EF skills: initiation of problem solving, concept formation, and reasoning. Performance on EF tasks requiring inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility and set shifting decreased at higher phe levels. Phe levels were positively correlated to age and inversely related to dietary adherence. We conclude that dynamic clinical parameters appear to govern EF in patients with PKU. We suggest that when adolescents decrease dietary compliance, changes in EF skills occur. Therefore, there is a need to specifically monitor EF skills in patients with PKU during the transition to, and during, adolescence.
Effect of the Urban Land Use Dynamics on Land Surface Temperature: A Case Study of Kohat City in Pakistan for the Period 1998–2018

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the majority of the global population has resided in urban areas, which is one of the environmental issues. The rush of people to cities has put a strain on land resources, particularly in emerging nations where the aspiration for a wealthy life persists. Population increase necessitates the expansion and intensification of agriculture, hastening the transition from agricultural to built-up regions. Changes in land use land cover (LULC) impact urban heat and are regarded as one of the most significant human changes to the Earth's climate. With this in mind, the purpose of this research is to investigate the land-use dynamics and their influence on the Land Surface Temperature of Kohat City, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The Landsat satellite images of Kohat city for 1998 were acquired from USGS, 2008 were acquired from SUPARCO, and for 2018 from SAS Planet. The acquired images were classified into 6 different LULC classes i.e. built up, farmland, open spaces/barren land, natural vegetation, orchards, and water bodies. The land surface temperature (LST) was computed with the radiance values of thermal bands from Landsat TM, ETM+, and Landsat OLI data. The analysis reveals an increase in the built-up area from 3969.04 hectares in 2000 to 6147.06 hectares in 2017. The computed LST reveals that in 1998 the LST ranged between 4.24 and 42.80 °C, with a mean of 31.81 °C. The LST of 2018 ranged from 6.86 to 46.90 °C with a mean of 36.17 °C. Overall mean temperature showed an increasing trend, i.e. from 31.81 °C in 1998 to 36.17 °C in 2018. According to the study, the greatest shift in LST occurred in densely populated areas, with 42.8 °C in 2000 and 46.9 °C in 2018, and the lowest in water and orchards. The LST of farmland was changed from 37.67 °C in 2000 to 41.47 °C in 2018, water 4.24 °C in 2000 to 6.86 °C in 2018; natural vegetation 37.19 °C and 40.17 °C, respectively.

Abstract:The rapid urbanization observed in various regions worldwide has led to the transformation of agricultural, forest, and green spaces into grey areas. The expansion of these grey areas contributes to heat wave events and an overall increase of average temperatures in specific regions due to their high reflectance properties. This study focuses on analyzing the heat island phenomenon resulting from urban growth and vegetation change over the past 30 years (1990–2020) in three key districts, namely Sheikhupura, Chiniot, and Pakpattan, located in the Punjab province. Landsat data is utilized to assess the urban heat island (UHI) effect caused by land cover changes in these regions. The maximum likelihood classification method is employed to classify remote sensing data, enabling the identification of heat islands based on surface emissivity. The UHI has main influence on built-up land areas therefore, to forecast future scenarios of LULC and their impact on LST, the study employs cellular automata (CA) modeling and incorporates several spatial variables to predict LULC for the year 2050. Four primary land cover classes, namely vegetation including cropland, built-up, water, and barren land, are utilized to examine temperature differences across different land cover types, aiming to understand the impact of land cover changes on temperature patterns. The findings also indicate that barren land and urban areas exhibit the highest thermal reflectivity, contributing significantly to increased surface temperatures. Over the past three decades, the surface temperature has risen by 1.65 °C in Chiniot, 0.86 °C in Sheikhupura, and experienced a slight decrease of – 0.04 °C in Pakpattan. The temperature decrease in Pakpattan can be attributed to a substantial reduction in barren land, which has been converted into agricultural and urban areas. This indicates a negative correlation between land surface temperature (LST) and vegetation cover. The changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in the study area are found to be relatively insignificant.

Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter for investigating surface urban heat islands (UHI) at different scales of urban development. Previous studies on UHI have been limited in quantifying the magnitude, and very few studies explored in-depth relations between built-up density classes and LST. This paper focuses on the land surface cover factors contributing to changes in urban LST. The impact of urban surface cover indicators such as land cover (LC) groups, built-up density classes, and pervious surface fraction (PSF) groups on LST was investigated in this study. Bengaluru metropolitan region was selected as the study area. Seasonal LSTs were calculated using the 2013–14, 2019, and 2023 Landsat 8 images and validated with MODIS LST images. LC for the three time periods were generated using supervised classification and related to respective LSTs. A 500 m × 500 m grid was considered a unit area to calculate the percentage of LC classes. One-way ANOVA tests revealed significant differences in seasonal mean LSTs among seven LC groups, six percentage built-up area (PBA) groups and nine PSF groups. The study has found a moderate negative relation between PBA groups and mean LSTs due to rapid urbanisation towards fringe areas in 2019 and 2023, which led to vacant lands with higher mean LST values converted into built-up areas with comparatively lesser mean LST. The mean LST of 2023 was lesser than in 2013 and 2019 due to an increment of vegetation cover by 16.8% during the last decade, which turned Bengaluru's central area into a surface urban cool island (SUCI). However, the study has also found that the high-density built-up areas with no vegetation or waterbody located in the periphery of the outer ring road and the central commercial area of Bengaluru generated more urban hot spots in 2019 and 2023 than in 2013. This study, carried out at a local level of urban development, is more relevant to the urban planners' formulation of guidelines for ameliorating surface UHI.

Abstract:In developing countries, examining land use land cover (LULC) change pattern is crucial to understanding the land surface temperature (LST) effect as urban development lacks coherent policy planning. The variability in LST is often determined by continuously changing LULC patterns. In this study, LULC change effect analysis on LST has been carried out using geometric and radiometric corrected thermal bands of multi-spectral Landsat 7 ETM + and 8 TIRS/OLI satellite imagery over Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in the years 2001 and 2022, respectively. Maximum likelihood classification (MLC) was applied to assess LULC change while an NDVI-based single-channel algorithm was used to retrieve LST using Google Earth Engine (GEE). Results showed a substantial change in built-up (+ 347.08%), barren land (- 50.74%), and vegetation (- 31.66%). With the change in LULC and impervious surfaces, the mean LST has increased by 5.47 ℃. The impact of sparse built-up was seen on vegetation and agriculture as a maximum temperature of > 47 ℃ was noticed in all LULC classes except agriculture, where the temperature reached as high as > 49 ℃ in 2022. Since Gandhinagar is developing a twin-city plan with Ahmedabad, this study could be used as a scientific basis for sustainable urban planning to overcome dynamic LULC change and LST impacts.

Abstract:Population pressure, infrastructural development, and economic growth are the reasons for increasing urbanization process although urban expansion. Land-use change, vegetation degradation, and also climate change are the results of urban heat island (UHI). Land surface temperature (LST) is an essential aspect of global climate change studies, calculating radiation budgets, heat balance studies, and also estimating the climate change scenario. In this study, investigate the UHI using thermal remote-sensing data. Satellite thermal data are used to calculate the thermal variation in Kolkata metropolitan and surrounding area. The remote-sensing technique is used to detect land use in 2020 using supervised classification, calculation of LST, and variation of mean LST from this region. The maximum and minimum temperatures are 33 °C and 18 °C individually. This study analyzes the LST distribution correlation with different spectral indicator. The relationship between NDVI and SAVI results shows negative correlation (R2 0.20 and 0.15, respectively) because of vegetation area effect on urban expansion. The urban heat island shows positive relation between LST and NDBI and UI because of urbanization and industrial development. The R2 values are show 0.61 and 0.27, respectively. The relationship between MNDWI and NDBal is showing 0.0003 and 0.04 individually. Kolkata metropolitan and surrounding urban areas are increased temperature due to urbanization, climate change and global warming and overuse of public vehicles. The UHI was increased due to anthropological activities. This study helps to identify the recent thermal variation of this area and build a proper management and planning for sustainable urban development.

Abstract:Abstract The land use and land cover (LULC) characteristics of Ghaziabad have experienced dynamic changes because of the city's ongoing industrialization and urbanisation processes. These shifts can be directly attributed to human actions. These shifts can be directly attributed to human actions. Thermal variation in the study area necessitates LULC analysis. Landsat and Sentinel satellite data for 2011 and 2021 were used to map LULC, estimate land surface temperature (LST) and analysis spatial autocorrelation among the variables using ArcGIS software and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. A sharp descent is observed in the cropland while built-up area has increased during the study period. With the increase in the built-up surface in the area, the ambient temperatures have also increased from 18.70 °C in 2011 to 21.81 °C in 2021 leading to urban heat island effect. At all spatial scales, spatial autocorrelation is a characteristic property of most ecological parameters. The spatial clustering of LST in an ecosystem can play a crucial role in determining the dynamics of LULC.The Moran’s, I show that there is a considerable level of spatial autocorrelation in the values of LST and highly clustered pattern for both the years. Monitoring and understanding the surface thermal environment is crucial to discerning the causes of climate change.

Abstract:Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) changes have a significant impact on Land Surface Temperature (LST). The LST is an important parameter in various environmental and climatological studies, as it plays a crucial role in understanding the Earth's surface–atmosphere interactions. The LULC changes can modify the surface energy balance and alter the radiation budget, leading to changes in LST. Urbanization, deforestation, and agricultural land use changes are some of the primary drivers of LULC change that have a significant impact on LST. Deforestation and agricultural land use changes result in a reduction in evapotranspiration, leading to an increase in LST. The main objective of the study is to analyze the spatio-temporal change in Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) and its effect on Land Surface Temperature (LST), as well as to establish a correlation of LST with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalize Difference Snow Index (NDSI). Understanding the impact of LULC on LST is essential for developing effective land use policies that can mitigate the adverse effects of LULC change on the environment and human health.

Abstract:Abstract In modern days, a sustainable urban planning system requires a balance of vegetation, water, and settlement. The proportions of these surface features directly influence the land surface temperature (LST) in an urban area. LST primarily depends on the emittance of land use/land cover (LULC) categories. In an urban area, changes in LULC categories as well as local warming are the prime regulators of LST change. The study analyses the LULC change and its impact on LST in Imphal City, India. Landsat satellite data for the summer season and winter seasons for 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021 have been used in this study. Results show that the mean LST of the study area increased at >1% rate/decade. The green area and water area decreased the LST values whereas the built-up area and fallow lands increased the LST values. The study indicates the consequences of proper land conversion to regulate the LST change. Moreover, the influence of population on LST is also determined. The continuous rising trend of population is a positive factor of increasing LST. The study may help the town and country planners to generate sustainable urban land.

Abstract:Urbanisation is a crucial issue for urban planners and researchers worldwide, especially in South Asia, where rapid urbanisation has led to several negative impacts on the environment, economy, and people. Land-use change is one of the associated problems of urbanisation that can lead to an increased land surface temperature (LST) and surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect. This study aimed to investigate the impact of urbanisation on the local climate in Dehradun city, India, by analysing the relationship between land-use and land-cover (LULC) change, LST, and the UHI effect. Geospatial analyses were carried out using Landsat multispectral data from 1996 to 2019. LULC classification using a machine learning-based supervised classification technique, support vector machine and LST were derived using a mono-window algorithm, and the surface UHI (SUHI) effect was quantified using the urban thermal field variance index (UTFVI). The study found that the built-up cover increased by 28%, resulting in seasonal LST increases of 7 °C and 2 °C for the summer and winter seasons, respectively. The findings show that the regions with no SUHI effect reduced significantly from 42.59% in 1996 to 21.55% in 2019, while the strongest SUHI regions increased from 0% in 1996 to 10.7% in 2019. This study contributes to delivering scientific information on the impact of urbanisation and land-use change on the urban thermal environment of the city, which may be useful for policymakers in developing appropriate strategies to reduce the impact of urbanisation on the environment and to improve the quality of life for citizens.

Abstract:Urbanization has a significant impact on microclimate, which eventually contributes to local and regional climate change. Unplanned urbanization is widespread in developing countries like Bangladesh. Chittagong, the second largest city, is experiencing rapid urban expansion. Since urban growth introduces a number of environmental issues, including changes in land surface temperature (LST), it is important to investigate the association between urbanization pattern and LST in Chittagong. In this work, we have analyzed the influence of land use and land cover (LULC) of Chittagong Metropolitan Area (CMA) on LST using multi-date Landsat data of 1990, 2005 and 2020. We have used an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm for LULC classification and an image-based method to compute LST from Landsat data. The results revealed that built-up areas, waterbodies and agricultural lands have increased by 4.57%, 1.04% and 0.94%, respectively, whereas vegetation has decreased by 0.34% and bare lands by 0.87% between 1990 and 2020. As expected, built-up area experienced maximum temperatures followed by bare lands. Waterbodies, on the other hand, exhibited minimum temperature in all years considered, followed by vegetation. Correlations between biophysical variables, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and Bare Soil Index (BSI), and LST indicated that NDVI and MNDWI were in a strong negative relationship, whereas NDBI and BSI have showed positive correlation with LST. Lastly, LST is predicted based on the relationship between LST and biophysical variables with an ANN algorithm, which demonstrated that the temperature may reach to a critical state by 2050, if the present trend of urban growth continues.
Addressing the impact of land use land cover changes on land surface temperature using machine learning algorithms

Abstract:Over the past two and a half decades, rapid urbanization has led to significant land use and land cover (LULC) changes in Kabul province, Afghanistan. To assess the impact of LULC changes on land surface temperature (LST), Kabul province was divided into four LULC classes applying the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm using the Landsat satellite images from 1998 to 2022. The LST was assessed using Landsat data from the thermal band. The Cellular Automata-Logistic Regression (CA-LR) model was applied to predict the future patterns of LULC and LST for 2034 and 2046. Results showed significant changes in LULC classes, as the built-up areas increased about 9.37%, while the bare soil and vegetation cover decreased 7.20% and 2.35%, respectively, from 1998 to 2022. The analysis of annual LST revealed that built-up areas showed the highest mean LST, followed by bare soil and vegetation. The future simulation results indicate an expected increase in built-up areas to 17.08% and 23.10% by 2034 and 2046, respectively, compared to 11.23% in 2022. Similarly, the simulation results for LST indicated that the area experiencing the highest LST class (≥ 32 °C) is expected to increase to 27.01% and 43.05% by 2034 and 2046, respectively, compared to 11.21% in 2022. The results indicate that LST increases considerably as built-up areas increase and vegetation cover decreases, revealing a direct link between urbanization and rising temperatures.

Abstract:Land use/land cover (LULC) changes due to urban growth on the regional scale affect land surface temperature (LST). The present study aims to assess the LULC changes and their impact on LST over Mardan and Charsadda districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, in the period from 1990 to 2019. Landsat satellite (TM& ETM +) datasets in the period from 1990 to 2010 and Sentinel-2 images from 2016 to 2019 were used in this study. All the datasets were pre-processed and the LULC types were classified by maximum likelihood classification algorithm. The vegetation degradation was computed from normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the LST was derived based on the LULC changes. The results showed that the overall accuracy of LULC classification was 87.84%. Dramatic LULC changes were observed during the last three decades, where the vegetation degradation area was decreased from 1307.8 (59.27%) to 1147.6 km 2 (52.1%) and the barren land area increased from 816.6 (37.07%) to 961.4 km 2 (42.64%). Similarly, the built-up area has also increased from 57.2 (2.5%) to 104.3 km 2 (4.73%) in the years 1990 and 2019, respectively. These variations in LULC types have significantly influenced the LST from 1990 to 2019; specifically, the LST of built-up area, barren land, and vegetation cover increased from 20.1 to 32.1 °C, 21.5 to 35.5 °C, and 17.1 to 28.2 °C, respectively. The regression line plotted defines that the LST has a negative correlation with NDVI and a positive correlation with normalized difference of built-up index (NDBI). In particular, the vegetation and land covers dramatically transformed to barren land and/or to urban development over the study area in the period from 1990 to2019, which has severely affected the LST and the natural resources of the study area. Therefore, our study will be very helpful for managing the rapid environmental changes and urban planning.

Abstract:Unplanned local development and alterations in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) are an early alert for towns and cities around the world. The population pressure has resulted in the conversion of natural land into impermeable areas, which has altered the surface energy budget and created microclimatic differences locally. The main objective of the present study is to estimate LULC changes and its relation to increases Land Surface Temperature (LST) in the Haldia Industrial Region (HIR) of West Bengal using multi-temporal Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) of 1992 and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) of 2022 with 30-m spatial resolution images were obtained from the USGS website. The supervised classification method was applied by using Maximum Likelihood classification (MLC) to classify the satellite images into various LULC classes such as settlement, waterbody, vegetation, agriculture land, and fallow land, respectively. The result suggested an overall increase of settlement area from 13.49 km2 in 1992 to 44.54 km2 in 2022. On the other hand, the agriculture land decreased from 214.26 km2 to 152.34 km2 due to fast urbanization, decline green lands, and expansion of barren lands. The outcome result from LST was exhibited that the LST value has increased 3.77°C during 1992 to 2022 in this study area. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was showed a strong negative relationship with LST with a determination coefficient (R2) values found as 0.491 (1992) and 0.356 (2022). The positive determination coefficient between LST with Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) was found as 0.0002 (1992), and 0.0417 (2022). R2 values were estimated as 0.174 (1992), and 0.0347 (2022) between LST with Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) that indicated a positive determination coefficient. The findings enhanced understanding of the relationship between urban LST and LULC in developing an inclusive climate resilience policy and making the HIR more sustainable to the effects of climate change.

Abstract:Intense urbanization alters the microclimate and ecology of cities by converting naturally vegetated and permeable surfaces into impervious built-up surfaces. These artificial impermeable surfaces re-balance the surface energy budget by storing solar heat due to their higher thermal conductivity, and consequently, increase the Land Surface Temperature (LST). The higher LST affects the city dwellers' Human Thermal Comfort (HTC). To address these issues, unlike most prior research, we assess not only the influence of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) alterations on summer LST but also on winter LST in Chittagong City of Bangladesh between 1993 and 2020 by using Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Additionally, the study evaluates the impact of LULC changes on the HTC during summer as LST substantially affects HTC in summer. The LULC analysis shows an increase in built-up area by 204% from bare lands, vegetated lands, lowlands, and water bodies between 1993 and 2020. In contrast, bare lands were converted from naturally vegetated surfaces, followed by lowlands and water bodies because of anthropogenic activities. The LSTs of Chittagong city, derived from remote sensing data, show a strong upward trend, with summer (winter) ranges of 20.62–34.07 °C (7.50–27.52 °C), 22.82–37.62 °C (14.92–29.32 °C), and 22.32–43.52 °C (17.08–31.83 °C) for 1993, 2007, and 2020, respectively. Between 1993 and 2020, the spatial mean winter and summer LSTs increased by 4.04 °C and 6.45 °C, respectively, or 0.15 °C and 0.24 °C per year. Chittagong had the highest mean LST in built-up areas for all the years. In addition, the study area's HTC gradually shifted to intense heat stress. The summer LST strongly correlated with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) while winter LST exhibited poor correlation with these indices.

Abstract:Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation coupled with overpopulation have altered land cover/land use (LCLU) and surface temperature (ST) patterns in Dehradun. Monitoring these changes through satellite-based remote sensing is required to ensure the sustained development of this ecologically fragile region. Here, LU and ST dynamics of the Dehradun municipal area have been estimated using Landsat-5 datasets for 1991, 1998, and 2008 and Landsat-8 dataset for 2018. LU maps have been extracted using a Gaussian Maximum Likelihood classifier with an overall accuracy of over 88% and Kappa coefficients above 0.85. Results reveal that the urban region expanded by 80.6% in the 27 years while dense vegetation and dry river bed classes have declined sharply. Sparse vegetation has risen by 3 km2, whereas bare ground has decreased by about 4.3 km2. Mean ST has increased above 9 °C from 1991 to 2018 in every season. A seasonal influence is evident on the mean ST per LU class's trend, which rose between 8 °C and 12 °C for every LU class, indicating significant warming across each LU class. ST probably has non-linear relationships with its causal factors represented by spectral indices, elevation, and population density. Urban heat island (UHI) formation is thus evinced, promulgating the administration's urgent action to save the environment and redrawing policies for ambitious projects like smart cities.
