Abstract:Background:: Cannabis consumption has rapidly increased in the United States due to more states legalizing non-medical and medical use. There is limited research, however, investigating whether cannabis may be associated with cognitive function, particularly across multiple dimensions of cannabis use. Objective:: The objective of this study was to examine whether cannabis consumption reason, frequency, and method are associated with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). Methods:: Data were obtained from 4,744 U.S. adults aged 45 and older in the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). SCD was a self-reported increase in confusion or memory loss in the past year. Odds of SCD by cannabis use reason, frequency, and methods (e.g., smoke, eat, vaporize) were examined using multiple logistic regression after imputing missing data, applying sampling weights, and adjusting for sociodemographic, health, and substance use covariates. Results:: Compared to non-users, non-medical cannabis use was significantly associated with 96% decreased odds of SCD (aOR=0.04, 95% CI=0.01-0.44, p<.01). Medical (aOR=0.46, 95% CI=0.06-3.61, p=.46) and dual medical and non-medical use (aOR=0.30, 95% CI=0.03-2.92, p=.30) were also associated with decreased odds of SCD, although not significant. Cannabis consumption frequency and method were not significantly associated with SCD. Conclusion:: The reason for cannabis use, but not frequency and method, is associated with SCD. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms that may contribute to the observed associations between non-medical cannabis use and decreased odds of SCD.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Marijuana impairs the brain development and function among adolescents, but little is known about whether marijuana use is associated with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among adults. OBJECTIVE We investigated the cross-sectional association between marijuana use and SCD in a representative sample of US adults aged 45 years and older. METHODS The study population included 100,685 participants from five cycles of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Participants self-reported their marijuana use in the past month and whether they experienced SCD or SCD-related functional limitations in the past year. Participants were categorized into past-month marijuana non-users and past-month marijuana users. Among users, they were further classified as occasional (<10 days) and frequent users (≥ 10 days). The weighted, multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to examine the association between marijuana use and risk of SCD, adjusting for age, sex, educational level, chronic disease status, and other potential confounders (odds ratios [ORs] with 95% confidence intervals [95% CI]). RESULTS The sample included 94.2% past-month marijuana non-users, 5.83% users, and 3.45% frequent users. Compared with past-month marijuana non-use, past-month marijuana use was significantly associated with higher odds of SCD (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.42, 2.06). The higher frequency was associated with higher odds of having SCD in a dose-response manner (p Trend < 0.001). Similar associations remained for the SCD-related functional limitations. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide initial evidence that marijuana use may adversely influence SCD among adults aged 45 years and older. Relationship of Cannabis Use With Immediate, Delayed, and Working Memory: The Health and Retirement Study

Abstract:Abstract Past research has examined relationship between cannabis use and cognition among adolescents and young adults, but less is known about older adults despite rapidly increasing recreational and therapeutic cannabis use by this demographic. These relationships were explored cross-sectionally using data from the 2018 wave of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Dependent variables included immediate and delayed memory (10-item word list) and working memory (serial sevens; range 0-5). Cannabis use was categorized as non-user (n=886), past-user (n=334), current moderate (<52 uses/year; n=36), and current heavy (52+ uses/year; n=92). Mean age was 67.59 years (range: 50-98, SD=10.76). The sample was predominantly female (59%), and Caucasian (67%). Uncontrolled analyses found that cannabis use group was associated with immediate memory (F=6.14, p<.001), delayed memory (F=3.75, p=.01), and working memory (F=6.91, p<.001). Analyses controlled for gender, education, age, and race found that cannabis use group was no longer associated with delayed memory (F=1.74, p=.16) or working memory (F=1.66, p=.17); however, cannabis use was associated with immediate memory (F=3.75, p=.01) in controlled analyses. Current heavy users’ (M=4.94, SE=.16) immediate memory worse than that of both non-users (M=5.48, SE=.06) and past users (M=5.49, SE=.09; p<.05 for both). Gender, education, age, and race significantly associated with immediate, delayed, and working memory, respectively (p<.05 for all). In conclusion, relative deficits in immediate memory, but not delayed memory or working memory, were associated with current heavy cannabis use among older adults. In combination with other findings, these results may inform development of safe-use guidelines for older adults.
The association between cannabis use and neuroimaging measures in older adults: findings from the UK biobank

Abstract:Abstract Background Cannabis use has increased in recent years. However, the long-term implications of cannabis use on brain health remain unknown. We explored the associations of cannabis use with volumetric brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures in dementia-free older adults. Methods This cross-sectional and longitudinal study included dementia-free participants of the UK Biobank aged ≥60 years. Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association of cannabis use and patterns of use with volumetric brain MRI measures. The association between cannabis use and change in brain MRI measures over time was also tested. All models were adjusted for potential confounders. Results The sample included 19,932 participants (mean age 68 ± 5 years, 48% men), 3,800 (19%) reported lifetime use of cannabis. Cannabis use was associated with smaller total, white, grey and peripheral cortical grey matter volumes (B = −6,690 ± 1,157; P < 0.001, B = −4,396 ± 766; P < 0.001, B = −2,140 ± 690; P = 0.002 and B = −2,451 ± 606; P < 0.001, respectively). Among cannabis users, longer duration of use was associated with smaller total brain, grey and cortical grey matter volumes (B = −7,878 ± 2,396; P = 0.001, B = −5,411 ± 1,430; P < 0.001, B = −5,396 ± 1,254; P < 0.001, respectively), and with increased white matter hyperintensity volume (B = 0.09 ± 0.03; P = 0.008). Additionally, current vs. former users (B = −10,432 ± 4,395; P = 0.020) and frequent versus non-frequent users (B = −2,274 ± 1,125; P = 0.043) had smaller grey and cortical grey matter volumes, respectively. No significant associations were observed between cannabis use and change in brain MRI measures. Discussion Our findings suggest that cannabis use, particularly longer duration and frequent use, may be related to smaller grey and white matter volumes in older ages, but not to late-life changes in these measures over time.

Abstract:Background Cannabis use during adolescence and young adulthood has been associated with brain harm, yet despite a rapid increase in cannabis use among older adults in the past decade, the impact on brain health in this population remains understudied. Objective To explore observational and genetic associations between cannabis use and brain structure and function. Methods We examined 3641 lifetime cannabis users (mean (SD) age 61.0 (7.1) years) and 12 255 controls (mean (SD) age 64.5 (7.5) years) from UK Biobank. Brain structure and functional connectivity were measured using multiple imaging-derived phenotypes. Associations with cannabis use were assessed using multiple linear regression controlling for potential confounds. Bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomisation analyses were used to investigate potential causal relationships. Findings Cannabis use was associated with multiple measures of brain structure and function. Participants with a history of cannabis use had poorer white matter integrity, as assessed by lower fractional anisotropy and higher mean diffusivity in the genu of the corpus callosum, as well as weaker resting-state functional connectivity in brain regions underlying the default mode and central executive networks. Mendelian randomisation analyses found no support for causal relationships underlying associations between cannabis use and brain structure or function. Conclusions Associations between lifetime cannabis use and brain structure and function in later life are probably not causal in nature and might represent residual confounding. Clinical implications Cannabis use is associated with differences in brain structure and function. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these associations, which do not appear to be causal.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Objectives Cannabis use among aging Americans continues to increase. We examine correlates of cannabis use including attitudes, state of residence, health status and service use. Research Design and Methods Using the 2018 Health and Retirement Study Cannabis module completed by 1,372 respondents aged 50 and older, we distinguished current cannabis users from those who have never used or have some prior use. We linked 2018 and 2016 core HRS data and used multinomial regressions to identify associations among current use, attitudes, place of residence, as well as current (2018) and past (2016) medical conditions, pain and sleep issues. We also examined associations among cannabis use, hospital stays and outpatient medical visits. Results Past year cannabis use reached 10.3% among aging Americans. Attitudes toward cannabis have changed over time with 4 of 5 survey respondents currently holding a favorable attitude. Attitude and state of residence were associated with current use. Cannabis users reported higher levels of pain, were more likely to use prescription opioids, and report activity limitations in both 2016 and 2018. Associations between cannabis use and sleep issues or concurrent healthcare use were not observed. Discussion and Implications Changing attitudes and state legalization appear important for late middle age and older persons, and as many as 1 of every 5 persons over 50 may be using cannabis by 2030. Cannabis use among aging Americans warrants increased attention from care providers, program administrators and policy makers, especially as a prevention or harm reduction strategy relative to prescription opioids.

Abstract:Introduction: Cannabis is frequently used and increasingly legalized in the U.S., and 27.7 million Americans aged >= 12 years are currently using cannabis. However, the public health effects of can-nabis use in the general population remain unclear. This study examines the associations of cannabis use with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in U.S. adults. Methods: The study included 14,818 adults (aged 20-59 years) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2014 and were free of cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline. Survey participants were linked to mortality records through December 31, 2015. The outcomes included all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and cancer mortality. All statistical analyses were conducted in 2019. Results: During 86,453 person-years of observation, 304 deaths occurred, including 39 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 79 deaths from cancer. After adjustment for a variety of potential confounders, the hazard ratios for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and cancer mortality among cannabis ever users, compared with the ratios among nonusers, were 1.14 (95% CI=0.81, 1.59), 2.29 (95% CI=1.10, 4.78), and 0.67 (95% CI=0.40, 1.14), respectively. The hazard ratios for cardiovascular disease mortality among cannabis users, compared with those among nonusers, were 1.65 (95% CI=0.57, 4.89) if the use was first initiated at age >= 18 years and 3.00 (95% CI=1.41, 6.38) if the use was first initiated before age 18 years. Conclusions: Cannabis use was significantly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease mortality among U.S. adults, especially among those who started using cannabis before age 18 years. Marijuana use among community‐dwelling older adults: A population‐based study

Abstract:Abstract Objectives There is a paucity of population‐level data on marijuana use and mental health and functioning in older adults. Methods We analyzed cross‐sectional data ( n = 910) from a well‐characterized cohort, the Monongahela‐Youghiogheny Healthy Aging Team (MYHAT) study. MYHAT is an age‐stratified random sample of the population age 65 years and older from a small‐town in the USA. Half the sample was female and half were over 75 (Mean age = 77). Most participants were non‐Hispanic White. Marijuana use was assessed by self‐report and symptoms of mood disorders were screened using the modified Centers for Epidemiological Studies‐Depression Scale and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder screener. Cognition was assessed by the Mini‐Mental State Examination and a neuropsychological test battery; functioning using the OARS Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living; and overall assessment using the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR®). Results One in five MYHAT participants had a history of marijuana use and 5% reported recent use, primarily for pain (41%) and recreation/relaxation (37%). Recent use was associated with cigarette and alcohol use, symptoms of depression or anxiety, and impairments in attention. Conclusions Twenty‐percent of community‐dwelling older adults living in a US state where recreational marijuana use is illegal had a history of marijuana use. Recent marijuana use was less common but, consistent with prior research, associated with other substance use and poorer mental health.

Abstract:Background With increases in cannabis use and potency, there is a need to improve our understanding of the impact of use on cognitive function. Previous research indicates long-term cannabis use may have a negative effect on executive function. Few studies have examined persistence of it in protracted abstinence, and there is limited evidence of predictors of worse cognitive function in current and former users. In this study, we aim to evaluate the associations between cannabis use status (current, former, and never use) and self-report cognition. Further, we investigate if cannabis use characteristics predict self-report cognitive function.

Abstract:Importance: Studies report disproportionate increases in cannabis use among middle-aged (50-64) and older (65+) U.S. adults, groups particularly vulnerable to its adverse effects. However, national data on attitudes towards cannabis use and legalization, as well as prevalences of key cannabis-related behaviors are lacking for these groups. Objective: To present national prevalences of past-year any cannabis use, medical use, consumption methods, and other important use-related behaviors, and attitudes toward use, as well as associations of such behaviors and attitudes to cannabis use among U.S. adults ages 50 and older. Design: Cross-sectional data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used to calculate weighted prevalences for all cannabis measures by primary age groups (50-64, ≥65) as well as two specified older age groups (65-74, ≥75) and sex. Associations between sociodemographics and cannabis use were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. Main Outcomes and Measures: Self-reported past-year cannabis use (outcome), consumption methods, medical use and health conditions for which cannabis was used, prescriptions by healthcare providers, current and past perception of acceptability, perceptions of risk, and attitudes toward legalization (exposures). Covariates included sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and employment status. Setting and Participants: HRS participants who completed the 2018 cannabis use experimental module (n=1,324). Results: Past year cannabis use was reported by 18.5% (SE=2.17) and 5.9% (SE=1.19) of middle-age and older adults, respectively in the U.S. In both groups, a majority of individuals consumed cannabis exclusively by smoking. Approximately 25% of middle-aged adults and 20% of older adults used cannabis for medical purposes, with ~20% in both groups receiving a prescription or recommendation for medical use from a healthcare provider. Over 75% of individuals in both age groups viewed medical use of cannabis as acceptable, and older adults were more likely to view cannabis as a gateway drug and to support restrictions of cannabis laws. Conclusions and Relevance: Cannabis use among both middle-aged and older U.S. adults is higher than previously reported in state- and national-level studies, with many engaging in cannabis behaviors associated with increased harm. Greater public health and clinical efforts are needed for tailored prevention and intervention strategies.

Cannabis use and neurocognitive performance at 13-14 Years-Old: Optimizing assessment with hair toxicology in the Adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study

Abstract:Objective: Cannabis is widely used, including in early adolescence, with prevalence rates varying by measurement method (e.g., toxicology vs. self-report). Critical neurocognitive development occurs throughout adolescence. Given conflicting prior brain-behavior results in cannabis research, improved measurement of cannabis use in younger adolescents is needed. Methods: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study Year 4 follow-up (participant age: 13-14 years-old) included hair samples assessed by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS, quantifying THCCOOH (THC metabolite), THC, and cannabidiol concentrations, and the NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery. Youth whose hair was positive for cannabinoids or reported past-year cannabis use were included in a Cannabis Use (CU) group (n = 123) and matched with non-using Controls on sociodemographics (n = 123). Standard and nested ANCOVAs assessed group status predicting cognitive performance, controlling for family relationships. Follow-up correlations assessed cannabinoid hair concentration, self-reported cannabis use, and neurocognition. Results: CU scored lower on Picture Memory (p = .03) than Controls. Within the CU group, THCCOOH negatively correlated with Picture Vocabulary (r = -0.20, p = .03) and Flanker Inhibitory Control and Attention (r = -0.19, p = .04), and past-year cannabis use was negatively associated with List Sorting Working Memory (r = -0.33, p = .0002) and Picture Sequence Memory (r = -0.19, p = .04) performances. Conclusions: Youth who had used cannabis showed lower scores on an episodic memory task, and more cannabis use was linked to poorer performances on verbal, inhibitory, working memory, and episodic memory tasks. Combining hair toxicology with self-report revealed more brain-behavior relationships than self-report data alone. These youth will be followed to determine long-term substance use and neurocognition trajectories.
Impacts of medical and non-medical cannabis on the health of older adults: Findings from a scoping review of the literature

Abstract:Cannabis legalization has enabled increased consumption in older adults. Age-related mental, physical, and physiological changes may lead to differences in effects of cannabis in older adults compared to younger individuals. To perform a scoping review to map the evidence regarding the health effects of cannabis use for medical and non-medical purposes in older adults. Electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library) were searched for systematic reviews (SRs), randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized/observational studies (NRSs) assessing the health effects and associations of cannabis use (medical or non-medical) in adults ≥ 50 years of age. Included studies met age-related inclusion criteria or involved a priori identified health conditions common among older adults. Records were screened using a liberal accelerated approach and data charting was performed independently by two reviewers. Descriptive summaries, structured tables, effect direction plots and bubble plots were used to synthesize study findings. From 31,393 citations, 133 publications describing 134 unique studies (26 SRs, 36 RCTs, 72 NRSs) were included. Medical cannabis had inconsistent therapeutic effects in specific patient conditions (e.g., end-stage cancer, dementia), with a number of studies suggesting possible benefits while others found no benefit. For medical cannabis, harmful associations outnumbered beneficial, and RCTs reported more negative effects than NRSs. Cannabis use was associated with greater frequencies of depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, substance use and problematic substance use, accidents/injuries, and acute healthcare use. Studies often were small, did not consistently assess harms, and did not adjust for confounding. The effects of medical cannabis are inconsistent within specific patient conditions. For older adults, generally, the available evidence suggests cannabis use may be associated with greater frequencies of mental health issues, substance use, and acute healthcare use, and the benefit-to-risk ratio is unclear. Studies with a balanced assessment of benefits and harms may guide appropriate public health messaging to balance the marketing pressures of cannabis to older adults.

Abstract:Objective: To determine whether subjective memory complaints (SMCs) are associated with performance on objective cognitive measures and psychological factors in healthy, community-dwelling older adults. Method: The cohort was composed of adults, 65 years and older with no clinical evidence of cognitive impairment (n = 125). Participants were administered: CogState computerized neurocognitive battery, Prospective Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, personality and meaning-in-life measures. Results: SMCs were associated with poorer performance on measures of executive function (p = 0.001). SMCs were also associated with impaired delayed recall (p = 0.006) but this did not remain significant after statistical adjustment for multiple comparisons. SMCs were inversely associated with conscientiousness (p = 0.004) and directly associated with neuroticism (p < 0.001). Higher scores on SMCs were associated with higher perceived stress (p = 0.001), and ineffective coping styles (p = 0.001). Factors contributing to meaning-in-life were associated with fewer SMCs (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SMCs may reflect early, subtle cognitive changes and are associated with personality traits and meaning-in-life in healthy, older adults.

We conducted a study to evaluate the association of SMCs with serum biomarkers of neurodegeneration, including neurofilament light chain (NfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and total tau (t‐tau). In addition, we evaluated the association of SMCs with the rate of cognitive decline. Methods This study included 1096 individuals participating in the Chicago Health and Aging Project, with data on SMCs, neurodegenerative biomarkers (NfL, GFAP, and t‐tau), and global cognitive scores. The SMC score ranges from 0 to 8 and higher scores reflect more memory complaints. Linear regression models were developed to investigate the association of SMCs with serum biomarkers, adjusted by age, sex, race, education, and APOE e4. Linear mixed‐effects models were used to examine the independent association of SMCs with cognitive decline in a multivariable model that was additionally adjusted by biomarkers of neurodegeneration. Results Of the 1096 individuals, 665 (60.7%) were female, 643 (58.7%) were African Americans, and the mean (SD) age at the baseline was 78.0 (5.8) years. Compared to individuals with fewer memory complaints (i.e., people in the first tertile of SMCs), those reporting more memory complaints (i.e., people in the third tertile of SMCs) had a 12.0% increase in serum concentrations of NfL and an 9.4% increase in GFAP. In addition, individuals reporting more memory complaints (i.e., those in the 3rd versus the 1st tertile of SMCs) had a faster rate of cognitive decline by 0.029 (β −0.029, 95% CI −0.046 to −0.013) standardized units per year. Conclusions Individuals who reported more memory complaints had higher levels of biomarkers of neurodegeneration and a faster rate of cognitive decline, suggesting that SMCs may be valuable for identifying people at high risk of cognitive impairment.

Abstract:With increased legalization of recreational and medical cannabis, use of this drug is growing rapidly among older adults. As cannabis use can impair cognition in young adults, it is critically important to understand how consumption interacts with the cognitive profile of aged individuals, who are already at increased risk of decline. The current study was designed to determine how cannabis influences multiple forms of cognition in young adult and aged rats of both sexes when delivered via two translationally-relevant routes of administration. Acute exposure to cannabis smoke enhanced prefrontal cortex-dependent working memory accuracy in aged males, but impaired accuracy in aged females, while having no effects in young adults of either sex. In contrast, the same cannabis smoke exposure regimen had minimal effects on a hippocampus-dependent trial-unique non-matching to location mnemonic task, irrespective of age or sex. In a second set of experiments, chronic oral consumption of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9THC) enhanced working memory in aged rats of both sexes, while having no effects in young adults. In contrast, the same oral Δ9THC regimen did not affect spatial learning and memory in either age group. Minimal age differences were observed in Δ9THC pharmacokinetics with either route of administration. Together, these results show that cannabis and Δ9THC can attenuate working memory impairments that emerge in aging. While these enhancing effects do not extend to hippocampus-dependent cognition, cannabis does not appear to exacerbate age-associated impairments in this cognitive domain.

Abstract:Introduction Older adults are increasingly using medical cannabis (MC). It is unclear if therapeutic effects increase problematic use patterns. The current study addresses this issue by examining symptom trajectories across the day and using trajectories to predict problematic use. Methods One-hundred six older adults (age range 55-74) who endorsed medical conditions approved for treatment using MC were recruited online. Participants received six text messages/day to assess momentary symptoms for 15 days. Results Participants provided 5,156 momentary assessments across 1,106 use days. Symptom trajectories were examined across the day. There was a decline in all symptoms following use. Negative affect, pain, and nausea evinced momentary negative reinforcement associations with cannabis intoxication. Momentary negative reinforcement was associated with adverse cannabis outcomes. Declines in post-use trauma symptoms and momentary negative reinforcement effects for negative affect were both associated with cannabis use disorder symptoms. Discussion These data suggest that MC may be effective in reducing common symptom clusters. However, the negative reinforcing effect (i.e., the link between use and symptom relief at the event level) may complicate the therapeutic nature (i.e., symptom reduction). Identifying interventions to maximize benefits while minimizing costs may increase the efficacy and safety of MC in older adults.

Abstract:Introduction Cannabis is by far the most widely used and abused drug listed on the Drug Enforcement Administration's Schedule I, which includes drugs with a high potential for abuse. There is evidence of short‐term negative effects of cannabis use on cognition, but only a limited number of studies have explored the association between cannabis use and age‐related cognitive decline. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between cannabis use and age‐related cognitive decline from early adulthood to late midlife. Methods The study population consisted of 5162 men who had participated in Danish follow‐up studies on cognitive aging. These studies included scores on the military intelligence test Børge Prien's Prøve from both the conscription assessment (mean age = 20 years; p1 and p99: 18 and 26 years) and from the follow‐up (mean age = 64 years; p1 and p99: 55 and 72 years) as well as extensive data on lifestyle and health from the follow‐up questionnaires. The association between cannabis use and age‐related cognitive decline was investigated in linear regression models. Results Men with a history of cannabis use had less cognitive decline from early adulthood to late midlife compared to men without a history of cannabis use. Among cannabis users, neither age of initiation of cannabis use nor frequent use was significantly associated with a greater age‐related cognitive decline. Discussion and Conclusions In a sample of more than 5000 men followed for a mean of 44 years, we found no significant harmful effects of cannabis use on age‐related cognitive decline.

Disparity between Perceptual Fall Risk and Physiological Fall Risk in Older Cannabis Users: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Aging is associated with cognitive decline and increased fall risk. Cognitive impairment is associated with cannabis use, which is increasing among older adults. Perceptual and physiological fall risk are discordant in some older adults, but whether cannabis use influences this association is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible disparities between perceptual and physiological fall risk in older cannabis users. Eight older medical cannabis users and eight sex- and age-matched non-users provided data on perceptual and physiological fall risk. Group differences were assessed, and perceptual fall risk was correlated with physiological fall risk. Perceptual risk and most of the physiological fall risk variables were equivalent between the groups. However, cannabis users performed significantly worse on unipedal stance than non-users. In addition, perceptual fall risk had weak correlations with physiological fall risk in the users (Spearman's rho = 0.17-0.41) and moderate-strong correlations in non-users (rho = -0.18-0.67). Cannabis users might have a discrepancy between perceptual and physiological fall risk. Because both concepts play a role in quality of life, identifying strategies to improve them may have significant benefits. Future studies investigating additional perceptual (e.g., cognition, fear of falling, depression, anxiety), physiological (e.g., more challenging static and dynamic balance conditions), and general fall risk are warranted.
Detecting Rectangular Objects in Urban Imagery - A Re-Segmentation Approach

Abstract:Image segmentation is a broad area, which covers strategies for splitting one input image into its components. This paper aims to present a re-segmentation approach applied to urban imagery, where the interest elements (houses roofs) are considered to have a rectangular shape. Our technique finds and generates rectangular objects, leaving the remaining objects as background. With an over-segmented image we connect adjacent objects in a graph structure, known as Region Adjacency Graph – RAG. We then go into the graph, searching for best cuts that may result in segments more rectangular, in a relaxation-like approach. Graph search considers information about object class, through a pre-classification stage using Self-Organizing Maps algorithm. Results show that the method was able to find rectangular elements, according user-defined parameters, such as maximum levels of graph searching and minimum degree of rectangularity for interest objects.

Abstract:Malignant sweat gland neoplasms are rare tumors. Historically, the principal mode of treatment has been local surgical excision. Eight published studies show that >50% of patients develop either local tumor recurrence after surgery or regional lymph node metastases. Most patients have evidence of locoregional failure before distant metastases are detected. Three patients were recently referred to the University of Arizona Cancer Center for consideration of irradiation after resection of such tumors. In two patients, the tumor was located on the scalp and, in one patient, on the alar surface of the nose. Their ages ranged from 19 to 60 years. All underwent surgical resection followed by high‐dose irradiation of the surgical bed (∼70 Gy) and regional lymphatic chains (∼50 Gy). Two patients remain disease‐free at 27 and 35 months, respectively, after completion of treatment; the third died of rapidly progressive systemic metastases. A review of the literature is provided focusing on treatment success and predominant patterns of recurrence. Finally, a rational approach for evaluation of patients that might benefit from local irradiation is presented.
