Abstract:In this study, an airlift inner-loop sequencing batch reactor using poly(butylene succinate) as the biofilm carrier and carbon source was operated under an alternant aerobic/anoxic strategy for nitrogen removal in recirculating aquaculture system. The average TAN and nitrate removal rates of 47.35±15.62gNH4-Nm(-3)d(-1) and 0.64±0.14kgNO3-Nm(-3)d(-1) were achieved with no obvious nitrite accumulation (0.70±0.76mg/L) and the dissolved organic carbon in effluents was maintained at 148.38±39.06mg/L. Besides, the activities of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and sulfate reduction activities were successfully inhibited. The proteome KEGG analysis illustrated that ammonia might be removed through heterotrophic nitrification, while the activities of nitrate and nitrite reductases were enhanced through aeration treatment. The microbial community analysis revealed that denitrifiers of Azoarcus and Simplicispira occupied the dominate abundance which accounted for the high nitrate removal performance. Overall, this study broadened our understanding of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using biodegradable material as biofilm carrier.

Abstract:In the current study, two nitrifying suspended growth bioreactor processes (denoted as R1 and R2) was investigated based on biofloc technology (BFT) in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The conversion of nitrifying R1 to denitrifying biofilter via adding carbohydrates was studied. It was observed that the dominant functional microbes of nitrifying BFT biofilters were ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), denitrifying bacteria (DNB), phosphorus/glycogen accumulating organisms (PAOs/GAOs), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The removal efficiencies of the total ammonium nitrogen and nitrite were prominent, while the treatment efficiencies respected to nitrate and soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) were insignificant. More than 16 h after the addition of carbohydrates to R1, the regular dynamics of dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved organic carbon, and C/N ratio became conducive to the notable removal of nitrate and SRP. Furthermore, the relative abundances of AOB and NOB decreased, and that of PAOs, GAOs, and DNB increased. Redundancy analysis indicated that, among the environmental factors and functional microbes involved in converting to a denitrifying biofilter, DO was the most important. Also, Spearman correlation heatmap elucidated Flavobacterium sp. and Norank_Nitrosomonadaceae were the dominants bacteria affected by environmental factors. This study found a high abundance of functionally active microbes participated in nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the BFT biofilters. Thus, the water treatment efficiency of the BFT biofilter could be flexibly and controlled by adding carbohydrates.

Abstract:A novel rotating drum biological contactor (RDBC) was operated with MBBR packing particles inside, by which anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic operating modes can be achieved by adjusting immersion level or rotating speed. The volume oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa) and power efficiency can reach 25.87 h?1 and 228.62 g·(kW·h)?1, respectively. Synthetic domestic sewage was treated with step feed post-denitrification process. The results showed that the optimal operating conditions were immersion level 2/3, rotating speed 8 r·min?1 and DO 3.0 mg·L?1 in aerobic tank, and immersion level 5/6, rotating speed 8 r·min?1 and DO 1.0 mg·L?1 in anoxic tank. In above conditions, when the influent average COD was 385.0 mg·L?1, 4NH+-N 38.0 mg·L?1, TN 38.0 mg·L?1, total inflow 6 L·h?1 (HRT=18 h) and flow distribution ratio 3:1, the remove rate of effluent COD, 4NH+-N and TN can reach 90.4%, 93.7% and 80.9%, respectively, which can meet the first level A discharge standards in China (GB18918—2002).

Abstract:The influence of operating conditions such as aeration rate,gas-liquid ratio and alkalinity of desulfurization solution on the performance of integrated biogas bio-desulfurization reactor were investigated by means of orthogonal test.The results showed that the order of influence was aeration rate,alkalinity of desulfurization solution,and gas-liquid ratio.For the volumetric biogas loading rate of 32.5 m3·m-3d-1 with the H2S concentration of 10 g·m-3,the optimal aeration rate,alkalinity of desulfurization solution and gas-liquid ratio were 72 m3·m-3d-1,4000 mg·L-1 and 0.625,respectively.The maximum sulfide removal rate of 0.74 kg·m-3d-1 and the biogas desulfurization efficiency of 93.8% were achieved under volumetric biogas loading rate of 40 m3·m-3d-1 with H2S concentration of 20 g·m-3.The operation cost was RMB 0.11 yuan per cubic meter of biogas or 6 yuan per kilogram of sulfide,which was almost 50% cost cut comparing with traditional dry desulfurization.

Abstract:An innovative static/oxic/anoxic (SOA) activated sludge process characterized by static phase as a substitute for conventional anaerobic stage was developed to enhance biological nutrient removal (BNR) with influent ammonia of 20 and 40 mg/L in R1 and R2 reactors, respectively. The results demonstrated that static phase could function as conventional anaerobic stage. In R1 lower influent ammonia concentration facilitated more polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) growth, but secondary phosphorus release occurred due to NOx- depletion during post-anoxic period. In R2, however, denitrifying phosphorus removal proceeded with sufficient NOx-. Both R1 and R2 saw simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. Glycogen was utilized to drive post-denitrification with denitrification rates in excess of typical endogenous decay rates. The anoxic stirring duration could be shortened from 3 to 1.5 h to avoid secondary phosphorus release in R1 and little adverse impact was found on nutrients removal in R2. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Influence of COD/sulfate ratios on the integrated reactor system for simultaneous removal of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen.

Abstract:An integrated reactor system was developed for the simultaneous removal of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen from sulfate-laden wastewater and for elemental sulfur (S-0) reclamation. The system mainly consisted of an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) for sulfate reduction and organic carbon removal (SR-CR), an EGSB for denitrifying sulfide removal (DSR), a biological aerated filter for nitrification and a sedimentation tank for sulfur reclamation. This work investigated the influence of chemical oxygen demand (COD)/sulfate ratios on the performance of the system. Influent sulfate and ammonium were fixed to the level of 600 mg SO42- L-1 and 120 mg NH4+ L-1, respectively. Lactate was introduced to generate COD/SO42- = 0.5:1, 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 3.5:1 and 4:1. The experimental results indicated that sulfate could be efficiently reduced in the SR-CR unit when the COD/SO42- ratio was between 1:1 and 3:1, and sulfate reduction was inhibited by the growth of methanogenic bacteria when the COD/SO42- ratio was between 3.5:1 and 4:1. Meanwhile, the Org-C/S2-/NO3- ratios affected the S-0 reclamation efficiency in the DSR unit. When the influent COD/SO42- ratio was between 1:1 and 3:1, appropriate Org-C/S2-/NO3- ratios could be achieved to obtain a maximum S-0 recovery in the DSR unit. For the microbial community of the SR-CR unit at different COD/SO42- ratios, 16S rRNA gene-based high throughput Illumina MiSeq sequencing was used to analyze the diversity and potential function of the dominant species.
Single-disc investigations on nitrogen removal of higher loads in sequencing batch and continuously operated RDR systems

Abstract:Nitrification of ammonium-rich synthetic wastewater was studied in a continuously operated rotating disc reactor (RDR) with additional aeration. For a wastewater with 500 mg L−1 NH4−N a nearly complete oxidation to nitrate could be demonstrated for a hydraulic residence time of 27 h (HRT). The reactor was nearly completely mixed. Nevertheless, the biofilm covering the first discs was remarkably thicker than that of the last discs. In order to study the bioactivity of selected discs, single-disc reactors were used. The determined ammonium oxidation rate was nearly independent of the thickness and location of the disc. In contrast, the nitrite oxidation rate increased from the first to the last discs. Some results from experiments on nitrogen removal in sequencing batch single-disc reactors (SBSDR) are discussed. The SBSDR was operated with 2 phases, a partially submerged phase for nitrification and a completely submerged anoxic phase in which acetate was added for denitrification. It was advantageous to operate without additional aeration and thus produce more nitrite and saving carbon and energy. First results of the treatment of a synthetic wastewater with a C:N ratio of 1 in a 5-phase SBBR process providing 2 nitrification, 2 anoxic and a final aerobic post-treatment phase showed average specific rates.

Abstract:The integration of anoxic filter and aerobic rotating biological contactor shows promise in treating rural domestic sewage. It offers high efficiency, low sludge production, and strong shock resistance. However, further optimization is needed for odor control, pollutant removal, and power consumption. In this study, the investigation on a one-pump-drive lab-scale device of retention anoxic filter (RAF) integrated with hydraulic rotating bio-contactor (HRBC) and its optimal operation mode were conducted. During the 50-day operation, optimal operation parameters were investigated. These parameters included a 175 % reflux ratio (RR), 5-h hydraulic retention time in the RAF (HRTRAF), and 2.5-h hydraulic retention time in the HRBC (HRTHRBC). Those conditions characterized a micro-aerobic environment (DO: 0.6-0.8 mg/L) in RAF, inducing improved deodorization (89.3 % sulfide removal) and denitrification (85.9 % nitrate removal) simultaneously. During the operation period, 84.79 ± 3.87 % COD, 82.71± 2.06 % NH4+-N, 74.83 ± 2.06 % TN, 91.68± 2.12 % S2-, and 89.04 ± 1.68 % TON were removed in RAF-HRBC. Based on large amount of operational data, organic loading rate curves of RAF-HRBC were validated and calibrated as a crucial reference to aid in full-scale designs and applications. The richness of microbial community was improved in both RAF and HRBC. In the RAF, the autotrophic sulfide-oxidizing nitrate-reducing bacteria (a-son) and heterotrophic sulfide-oxidizing nitrate-reducing bacteria (h-son) were selectively enriched, which intensified the sulfide removal and denitrification process. In the two-stage HRBC system, the 1st stage RBC was primarily composed of organics degraders, while the 2nd stage RBC consisted mainly of ammonium oxidizers. Overall, the integrated RAF-HRBC process holds significant potential for simultaneously improving pollutant removal and in-situ odor mitigation in decentralized domestic sewage treatment. This process specifically contributes to enhancing environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Abstract:A new biological nitrogen removal process——The circulating fluidized bed bioreactor (CFBBR) is developed for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and organic matter. This system is composed of anaerobic bed, aerobic bed and connecting device. Influent and nitrified liquid from aerobic bed enter anaerobic bed from the bottom of the anaerobic bed, completing the removal of nitrogen and organic matter. The system performance under the conditions of different inflow loadings and nitrified liquid recirculation rates ranging from 200% to 600% was examined. From technical and economic point of view, the optimum nitrified liquid recycle rate is 400%. With a shortest total retention time of 2.5 h (0.8 h in the anaerobic bed and 1.7 h in the aerobic bed) and a nitrified liquid recirculation rate of 400% based on the influent flow rate, the average removal efficiencies and effluent concentrations of total nitrogen and soluble COD_ Cr are found to be 88%, 95% and 3.5 mg/L, 16 mg/L, respectively. The VSS concentration, nitrification rate and denitrification rate in the system are less than 1 g/L, 0.026 -0.1 g /(g·d) and 0.016～ 0.074 g/(g·d) respectively.

Abstract:A chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated approach, which combines the advantages of both the chemical and biological technologies, is employed to achieve the removal of nitrogen monoxide (NO) from the simulated flue gas. The biological reduction of NO to nitrogen gas (N2) and regeneration of the absorbent Fe(II)EDTA (EDTA:ethylenediaminetetraacetate) take place under thermophilic conditions (50 +/- 0.5 degrees C). The performance of a laboratory-scale biofilter was investigated for treating NO(x) gas in this study. Shock loading studies were performed to ascertain the response of the biofilter to fluctuations of inlet loading rates (0.48 approximately 28.68 g NO m(-3) h(-1)). A maximum elimination capacity (18.78 g NO m(-3) h(-1)) was achieved at a loading rate of 28.68 g NO m(-3) h(-1) and maintained 5 h operation at the steady state. Additionally, the effect of certain gaseous compounds (e.g., O2 and SO2) on the NO removal was also investigated. A mathematical model was developed to describe the system performance. The model has been able to predict experimental results for different inlet NO concentrations. In summary, both theoretical prediction and experimental investigation confirm that biofilter can achieve high removal rate for NO in high inlet concentrations under both steady and transient states.

Abstract:The present work investigates pollutant removal and the transformation of nitrogen from sewage wastewater using a pilot-scale multi-stage bio-vermifilter system. Over a study period of 48 weeks, the pollutant removal performance of the system was measured and the effects of hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and dry–wet ratio (D/W) were estimated. The relationship between oxygen transfer rate and load of oxygen necessity was calculated and analysed for system optimisation. The method for diluting the isotope δ 15 N-NO 3 − was applied to study nitrogen transfer. Moreover, statistical correlations were analysed to determine the crucial factors which influence nitrogen transfer efficiency. The system removes pollutants efficiently; specifically, the average removal efficiencies are 94.2 % for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 93.3 % for NH 4 + -N, and 58.2 % for total nitrogen (T-N). Lowering HLR and D/W can enhance nitrogen removal. Nitrogen speciation and transformation were examined under an optimised condition with an HLR of 0.36 m day −1 and a D/W of 3. The results of isotope δ 15 N-NO 3 − dilution showed that NO 3 − -N was mainly produced in trickling bio-filter and vermibio-filter (VBF) I. By contrast, NO 3 − -N was mainly reduced in VBF II. Under stable operating conditions and environmental factors, COD/T-N was verified as the crucial factor in nitrogen removal.

Abstract:A two-stage anoxic/oxic (A/O)-moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system with multiple chambers was established for municipal wastewater treatment. At the total hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 11.2 h and nitrate recycling ratio of 1, the removal efficiencies reached 83.8%, 82.5%, and 77.8% for soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), 98.0%, 97.5%, and 94.9% for ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and 91.8%, 92.0%, and 87.7% for total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in summer, autumn and winter, respectively. Biofilms with functional bacterial populations were formed in the pre-anoxic reactors, the pre-oxic reactors, the post-anoxic reactors and the post-oxic reactors of the two-stage A/O-MBBR system. The highest nitrification potential was found in the last oxic reactor of the first A/O-MBBR subsystem with the highest relative abundances of the functional genes including [EC:1.14.99.39] and [EC:1.7.2.6]). The highest denitrification potential was found in the post-anoxic reactors with the highest relative abundances of the functional genes including [EC:1.7.2.1], [EC:1.7.2.5] and [EC:1.7.2.4]. This work constructed an efficient municipal biological nitrogen removal technology to achieve high effluent nitrogen standards in winter, and investigated its working mechanism to provide a basis for its design and optimization.

Abstract:Both the elemental sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (ESAD) and the biomass‑sulfur-based mixotrophic (simultaneous autotrophic and heterotrophic) denitrification processes (BSMD) are efficient methods for removing nitrate from wastewater. However, a comparative analysis of the denitrification capacity of the BSMD and ESAD in the packed bed reactors is still lacking. In this paper, corncob powder was selected as the biomass source to prepare biomass‑sulfur-based composite filter (BSCF) for the BSMD process. The denitrification performances of the three identical lab-scale bioreactors packed with varying elemental sulfur-based composite filters (ESCFs) were compared under varying loading conditions, and the optimal ESCF of the ESAD system was 2:1 by weight ratio of sulfur powder to shell powder. In pilot-scale experiments, the results showed that BSCF could decrease the sulfate productivity and gave better denitrification performance than the ESCF with the optimal nitrate removal rate (NRR) of 504 ± 12.3 mg NO3--N·L-1·d-1. In addition, the two-stage flushing strategy (for the removal of aged sludge) can effectively improve the denitrification capacity, while the denitrification will be inhibited when the influent dissolved oxygen concentration was higher than 4.5 mg L-1. Moreover, the heterotrophs and autotrophs were abundant in the reactors. Over time, the abundance of autotrophs increased while that of heterotrophs decreased. Overall, BSCF could be a promising and economic technology to improve the effluent quality.

Abstract:Currently, a novel chemical absorption-biological reduction (CABR) integrated process, employing Fe(II)EDTA as a solvent, is being under development to reduce the cost of NOx removal from flue gas. In this work, the NO removal profile, re-acclimation performance, and microbial characteristics in a thermophilic biofilter were investigated at the conditions typical to CABR process. The biofilter comprised of four layers of packing material with a surface area of 1200 m(2) m(-3). Experimental results revealed that the biofilter could remove 95 % of the fed NO at typical flue gas conditions. As the gas residence time varied from 90 to 15 s, the NO removal efficiency decreased from 100 to 56.5 % due to the NO mass transfer limitation. The longer period of the biofilter shutdown required more time for its re-acclimation. For example, after 8-day shutdown, the biofilter was re-acclimated in 32 h. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of PCR-amplified product showed that Pseudomonas, a group of denitrifier, was dominant in the biofilter. Because the Pseudomonas was abundant at the bottom layer of packed-bed, the bottom layer contributed to 60-70 % of the total NO removal. In addition, Pseudomonas gradually faded away along the gas flow path from the bottom to the top of biofilter, resulting in a significant decrease in NO removal at the other three packed-bed layers. These observed results will provide the process engineering and scale-up data with respect to the biofilter operations to help advance the CABR process to pilot-scale testing.

Abstract:A chemical absorption-biological reduction process has been developed for the removal of NOx in middle and small-sized industrial boilers. Considering the gap of process and biofilms scale-up, a mesoscopic fluidic reactor was built to study the dynamic biofilm formation and Fe(III)EDTA reduction ability. The reactor was run multiple times with different biofilm formation times and was then studied by microscopy and Matlab software. Results show that the biofilm formation has great relevance to gravity and formed biofilm has a Fe(III)EDTA reduction ability of similar to 5*10(-10 )mol/mm(3)/h at a flow rate of 40 mu L/min. This data confirms the results in the previous research and the method provides a good way to design a scaled continuous flow chemical absorption-biological reduction system.

Abstract:The anammox process is considered as a revolutionary new denitrification technology. In this study, the anammox process was started in a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and the mechanism of excess removal of ammonia nitrogen was studied. At stage I (day 0–51), anammox bacteria (AnAOB) was enriched by feeding synthetic sewage without adding organic carbon. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was maintained at about 54% and the removal rate of total inorganic nitrogen was maintained at about 62%. At stage II (day 52–91), internal circulation was added into the MBBR. After adding internal circulation, the ammonium removal efficiency reached about 96% (at day 56) and the total nitrogen removal efficiency reached about 86%. At day 90, the biofilm sample was drowned out for high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the relative abundance of AnAOB was 23.23%. The dominant anammox genus was Candidatus Brocadia. The relative abundance of Nitrosomonas (ammonia oxidizing bacteria, AOB) was 0.63%. The excess ammonia nitrogen was removed by AOB and AnAOB through the partial nitrification and anammox (PNA) process.

Abstract:Types of microbial aggregates have essential effects on bacterial communities' characteristics, thus affecting the pollutants removal. An up-flow biofilm reactor was used to study the different performances of S2-/NO2- removal and functional genes in suspended sludge and biofilms. The metabolic pathways of sulfurous and nitrogenous pollutants in the desulfurization-denitrification process were proposed. The results showed that S0 formation dominated the reactor with a high S2- concentration. Autotrophic Sulfurovum responsible for S2-/S0 oxidation was the only dominant bacteria in suspended sludge. Heterotrophic Desulfocapsa responsible for SO42- reduction coexisted with Sulfurovum and dominated in biofilms. S2- oxidation to S0 was catalyzed via fccA/B and sqr genes in suspended sludge. S32-/S0 oxidation to SO42- was catalyzed via dsrA/B gene in biofilms. SO42- and NO2- were removed via the dissimilatory sulfate reduction and denitrification pathway, respectively. This work provides a fundamental and practical basis for optimizing suspended sludge/biofilm systems for S2-/NO2- removal.
Optimization on structure and operation parameters of biofilter for decentralized sewage treatment

Abstract:Aiming for treating decentralized domestic wastewater in rural China, this study evaluates the effects of ceramsite size and structure, and water recirculation parameters, upon the performance of recirculating biofilter (RBF). RBF shows stable capability of chemical oxygen demand (COD) remediation and ammonia nitrification. In addition, the microbial flora and structures of the various layers in the system are analyzed via high-throughput sequencing in order to study the microbial diversity. The results indicate that while the ceramic particle size has no significant influence on the COD remediation capacity, the ceramics with smaller particle sizes exhibit better ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal ability, with a first-order linear relationship between the influent ammonia nitrogen load and the effluent NH4+-N concentration in RBF (R2 > 0.64). An increased hydraulic load and intermittent operation are shown to deteriorate the water quality with respect to NH4+-N, while an increased recirculation ratio increases the removal rate of NH4+-N from the effluent. Further, the water distribution time has a stronger effect upon the NH4+-N concentration in the effluent than does the recirculation ratio. Moreover, the microbial structure of the multi-layer recirculating trickle biofilter varies significantly during the process. The results indicate that a high recirculation ratio, long water distribution time, and multi-layer structure will be beneficial for improving the pollutant treatment capacity of RBF.
