Abstract:Background & aims: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, originating in the first decades of life. A better understanding of their early determinants would allow for better prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nutritional and activity-related characteristics during adolescence on young adult cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: The Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study included adolescents (aged 12.5-17.5 years) in 10 European centres. Four centres designed a nested cohort including 236 participants who were reassessed as young adults (21-32 years). Food consumption was evaluated by dietary recalls, physical activity by accelerometers, physical fitness using physical tests and nutritional knowledge by questionnaires. Cardiovascular health was assessed by Pathobiological Determinants of Atherosclerosis in Youth (PDAY) Study risk scores and its components. Factors associated with cardiovascular risk were identified using a multivariable regression model. Results: Higher Diet Quality Index (DQI, P = 0.012) and nutritional knowledge (P = 0.015) were significantly associated with lower modified PDAY risk scores. Ultra-processed foods were associated with a lower non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol (P = 0.003), whereas DQI (P = 0.014) and Planetary Health Diet Index (P = 0.016) were associated with a higher HDL cholesterol. Higher DQI was also related to a lower body mass index (BMI, P = 0.006). In addition, cardiorespiratory fitness was related to a lower BMI (P = 0.004). Conclusions: Nutritional knowledge, diet quality and adherence to a sustainable diet in adolescence decrease cardiovascular risk in adulthood, whereas ultra-processed food consumption increases risk. These factors appear as targeted prevention tools for promoting a healthier adolescent lifestyle to decrease long-term cardiovascular risk. Relationship between self-reported dietary intake and physical activity levels among adolescents: The HELENA study

Abstract:BackgroundEvidence suggests possible synergetic effects of multiple lifestyle behaviors on health risks like obesity and other health outcomes. Therefore it is important to investigate associations between dietary and physical activity behavior, the two most important lifestyle behaviors influencing our energy balance and body composition. The objective of the present study is to describe the relationship between energy, nutrient and food intake and the physical activity level among a large group of European adolescents.MethodsThe study comprised a total of 2176 adolescents (46.2% male) from ten European cities participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) study. Dietary intake and physical activity were assessed using validated 24-h dietary recalls and self-reported questionnaires respectively. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were used to compare the energy and nutrient intake and the food consumption between groups of adolescents with different physical activity levels (1st to 3rd tertile).ResultsIn both sexes no differences were found in energy intake between the levels of physical activity. The most active males showed a higher intake of polysaccharides, protein, water and vitamin C and a lower intake of saccharides compared to less active males. Females with the highest physical activity level consumed more polysaccharides compared to their least active peers. Male and female adolescents with the highest physical activity levels, consumed more fruit and milk products and less cheese compared to the least active adolescents. The most active males showed higher intakes of vegetables and meat, fish, eggs, meat substitutes and vegetarian products compared to the least active ones. The least active males reported the highest consumption of grain products and potatoes. Within the female group, significantly lower intakes of bread and cereal products and spreads were found for those reporting to spend most time in moderate to vigorous physical activity. The consumption of foods from the remaining food groups, did not differ between the physical activity levels in both sexes.ConclusionIt can be concluded that dietary habits diverge between adolescents with different self-reported physical activity levels. For some food groups a difference in intake could be found, which were reflected in differences in some nutrient intakes. It can also be concluded that physically active adolescents are not always inclined to eat healthier diets than their less active peers.

Abstract:969 R leading a study of an electrical device that treats glioblastomas tout it as a new standard of care for the disease, whereas other physicians question its effectiveness. Roger Stupp, MD, principal investigator of the study and director of the Cancer Center at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, presented the results of the study at the 19th Annual Scientific Meeting and Education Day of the Society for Neuro-Oncology held in Miami, Florida, in November, 2014. The device, formerly known as NovoTTF and now called Optune, is a noninvasive therapy that targets dividing cancer cells in the brain. It creates alternating, “wave-like” electric fields called tumor-treating fields (TTFields) that travel across the upper part of the brain in different directions to help slow or stop recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cancer cells from dividing. It is manufactured by Novocure Inc, a commercial stage oncology company headquartered in Jersey, an English island off the coast of France, and is available at 150 cancer centers across the United States. The portable, wearable device, which costs $21,000 per month, delivers an antimitotic, anticancer therapy through 4 transducer arrays placed on the surface of a patient’s scalp that are changed every 4 to 7 days. The device must be worn at least 18 hours each day, and patients must shave their scalps to wear it. Also included with the system is a portable battery and a lightweight field generator that produces the electric fields. Researchers say the most common side effect is skin irritation. Because patients with glioblastomas have very limited treatment options and a median survival of 15 months, scientists involved in the study view the device as an opportunity for these patients. Although it is not a cure or a replacement for surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy, interim analysis results from Novocure’s EF-14 phase 3 clinical trial demonstrated that the device extended both overall survival (OS) and progressionfree survival by 3 months in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma when used in combination with the chemotherapy drug temozolomide. Other physicians have yet to be convinced of the device’s efficacy. Several say they are taking a “wait-and-see” attitude until they view the published results of the study presented at the November meeting. In addition, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services does not provide coverage for the device, and it is currently under review with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s central nervous system tumor guidelines committee. “The data was very sketchy, at least to my eye, and the study design raised a lot of questions about whether this really is efficacious or not,” says W.K. Alfred Yung, MD, chair of the department of neuro-oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. “As a group, we decided not to prescribe the treatment.” Tracy Batchelor, MD, MPH, director of the division of neuro-oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, says, “It’s still early in terms of the data being presented. This is a highly lethal type of cancer, and we’re in desperate need of new therapies; of course we’d be open to any type of therapy that clearly extends survival and is safe.”
Overweight, obesity, and thinness among a nationally representative sample of Norwegian adolescents and changes from childhood: Associations with sex, region, and population density

Abstract:Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and thinness among Norwegian 13-year-olds and the changes from childhood (age 8 years) to adolescence (age 13 years); and to explore associations with sex, region, and population density from childhood to adolescence. Design: We used longitudinal, anthropometric data collected by school health nurses conducted in Norway. Weight status was classified according to the International Obesity Task Force cut-offs for overweight, obesity, and thinness, and according to mean body mass index (kg/m2). Participants: The Norwegian Youth Growth Study, consisting of a nationally representative sample of Norwegian 13-year-olds (n = 1852; 50.7% girls), which is a part of The Norwegian Growth Cohort. Results: Among 13-year-old Norwegians, the prevalence of overweight (including obesity), obesity, and thinness was 15.8%, 2.5%, and 7.3%, respectively. There was little evidence that these had changed from 8 to 13 years. From 8 to 13 years, the odds of obesity was highest in the Northern region of Norway compared to the South-East (odds ratio (OR): 3.78 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13, 12.65; p = 0.036) and in rural areas (OR: 4.76 (95% CI: 1.52, 14.90; p = 0.027). Over the same age period, girls had a trend towards a higher odds of thinness compared to boys (OR: 1.65 (95% CI: 0.98, 2.78; p = 0.057). Conclusions: In Norway, the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and thinness among 13-year-olds seem to be established by age 8 years. The prevalence of obesity was higher in the North and in rural areas. The results indicate the continued need for early prevention and treatment, and targeted interventions to certain areas.
The relationship between selected socioeconomic factors and thinness among Polish school-aged children and adolescents

Abstract:The analysis was performed on a database including 17,427 records of subjects aged 7-18 years, randomly sampled from a population of Polish students. Thinness was determined using international cut-off points, defined to pass through body mass index of 18.5 kg/m2 at the age of 18. The weighted prevalence of thinness and odds ratios with 95% confidence interval were estimated for gender, birth weight, level of schooling and school location, gross domestic product (GDP) per inhabitant, family income and maternal education. Body height was analysed according to body mass and birth weight categories. The prevalence of thinness was higher among children with low birth weight and among girls. The prevalence of thinness decreased with increasing GDP per inhabitant. In analysis by level of schooling: primary-middle-secondary, prevalence of thinness decreased among boys and increased among girls. Thin students were significantly shorter than other students, and thin girls less likely participated in physical education. Conclusion: Gender and socioeconomic factors are important determinants of thinness among Polish children and adolescents. Public health strategies should address family eating practices to prevent negative effects of weight deficit, especially among girls/children from low GDP regions. What is New: • The first time the prevalence and determinants of thinness based on data from a nationally representative, weighted sample of Polish children aged 7-18 years were presented. • The analysis shows how gender and socioeconomics determinants influence the prevalence of thinness among children and adolescent in post-transformation country and can be used to international comparisons.
Are Adolescent Body Image Concerns Associated with Health-Compromising Physical Activity Behaviours?

Abstract:The present study aimed to assess the-prevalence of health-compromising eating and physical activity behaviours, and to test their associations with physical activity, internalisation of sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and body image in a sample of adolescents of both genders. A total sample of 736 adolescents (437 or 59.4% were girls) participated in the study. The participants ranged in age from 16 to 19 years (x = 17.2, SD = 0.6). The sample completed a questionnaire measuring body mass index, the risk of eating disorders, body image, internalisation of sociocultural ideals of appearance, health-compromising eating behaviours (HCEB), and health-compromising weight control related to physical activity behaviours (HCPAB). Logistic regressions were used to assess the associations between the study variables and predictors of HCEB and HCPAB. The results of the study showed a relatively high prevalence of HCEB with a significantly higher prevalence in girls and participants with a higher BMI. The study also demonstrated that the prevalence of adolescent HCPAB was higher than HCEB. The internalisation of sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and body image concerns were higher in the HCEB and HCPAB groups. Female gender (OR = 1.88; 95% PI = 1.10–3.18), HCPAB (OR = 1.19; 95% PI = 1.10–1.28), a preoccupation with being overweight (OR = 3.43; 95% PI = 2.52–4.66), and body weight evaluation as too high (OR = 2.40; 95% PI = 1.57–3.68) were significant predictors of HCEB. More frequent physical activity (OR = 3.02; 95% PI = 1.76–5.17), HCEB (OR = 1.22; 95% PI = 1.11–1.32), and perceived pressures to conform to popular beauty ideals (OR = 1.51; 95% PI = 1.12–2.03) predicted higher HCPAB. HCPAB is an important variable associated with adolescents’ body image, physical activity, and weight control. The results of the present study are important for health promotion and education programs addressing adolescents’ healthy lifestyle, weight control, and body image concerns.

Low Body Mass Index for Early Screening of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Comparison Based on Standardized Body Mass Index Classifications

Abstract:Purpose: Scoliosis is a common musculoskeletal problem in adolescents. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and its associated factors among Korean adolescents. The prevalence of thin individuals among students with AIS was compared based on body mass index (BMI) classifications. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis and used the 2016 Korean National Health Examination for School Students data. Data from 16,412 students were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of AIS was higher in women (3.8%) than in men (1.6%), and a higher school year was a risk factor for AIS in both sexes. In woman adolescents, scoliosis was associated with thinness; however, the risk of AIS was inversely associated with overweight/obesity in both sexes. The prevalence of thin woman students with scoliosis differed based on the criteria used: 3.3% by the World Health Organization criteria and 14.3% by the International Obesity Task Force criteria. Conclusion: The prevalence of thin students with scoliosis could increase by up to four times depending on the BMI criteria. For early screening of thin people at risk of AIS among female students, the criterion of International Obesity Task Force should be used as it is more permissive of thinness. This is also because of the underestimation of AIS prevalence when using the BMI Z score of the World Health Organization cutoff.

Abstract:The HELENA Project—Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence—is a European, collaborative research project financed by the EU Sixth Framework Programme in the area of nutrition-related adolescent health. The basic objective of the HELENA project is to obtain reliable and comparable data from a random sample of European adolescents (boys and girls aged 13–16 years) on a broad battery of relevant nutrition and health-related parameters: dietary intake, food choices and preferences, anthropometry, serum indicators of lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism, vitamin and mineral status, immunological markers, physical activity, fitness and genetic markers. The HELENA project is conceived as a scientific construction with four complementary sub-studies that are elaborated through 14 well-defined work packages. Sub-studies are focused, respectively, on “a cross-sectional description of lifestyles and indicators of nutritional status (HELENA-CSS)”, “a lifestyle education intervention programme (HELENA-LSEI), “a metabolic study with cross-over design (HELENA-COMS)” and a “study on behaviour, food preferences and food development” (HELENA-BEFO). The project unites 20 research centres from 10 European countries. In addition, the consortium comprises five SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) that are actively involved in the research activities. The core of the HELENA project study material is an overall European cohort of 3,000 adolescents, equally recruited in ten cities from nine countries. Standardization of methods among partners is a key issue in the project and is obtained through the development of standard protocols, training sessions, validation sub-studies and pilot projects. Health-related problems have a tendency to evolve in cycles, with ever new problems emerging in ever new contexts that call for appropriate and tailored actions. The HELENA project is expected to offer essential elements for use in the overall machinery of required public health nutrition cycles. It is of the greatest importance for its results to prove useful that it can communicate with other initiatives on the level of science and society.

Abstract:Adolescence is recognized as a time of rapid physiological and behavioral change. In this transition, eating behavior is still being formed and remains an integral part of a person's lifestyle throughout his or her life. This study aims to assess eating behavior and associations with food intake in European adolescents. We included 2194 adolescents (45.9% boys), aged 12.5 to 17.5 years, from the cross-sectional HELENA study, with two completed 24 h recalls and complete questionnaire data on their eating behavior (Eating Behavior and Weight Problems Inventory for Children- EWI-C). Three subscales of the EWI were evaluated; they measured Strength and motivation to eat (EWI 1), Importance and impact of eating (EWI 2), and Eating as a means of coping with emotional stress (EWI 3). Since these subscales were specially focused on eating behavior, participants were classified as either Low (≤P75) or High (>P75) on each of the subscales. Our results showed a higher consumption of different types of food, in the EWI 1 scales, linked to the hunger and interest in eating, and we observed a relationship with the consumption of energy-dense products. This result was repeated in EWI 3, the subscale linked to emotional eating, where we also found higher consumption of energy-dense products. This study suggests that special features of eating behavior are associated with food intake in adolescents.

Lifestyle Behaviors and Psychological Health in Adolescents with Overweight or Obesity: Cross-sectional Associations with Weight Underestimation

Abstract:Background: Encouraging adolescents with overweight/obesity to accurately perceive their weight in the belief that this will improve their lifestyle behaviors (physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), eating behavior (EB)) may be detrimental to their psychological health. This study aimed to investigate associations between weight underestimation and lifestyle behaviors along with psychological health in French adolescents with overweight or obesity. Method: Baseline data from adolescents who participated in a school-based trial were used. Lifestyle behaviors and psychological health (anxiety, depression, eating disorders, quality of life (QoL)) were self-reported. Weight underestimation was measured by matching objective and perceived weight status. Multilevel models were computed to investigate associations between weight underestimation and lifestyle behaviors and psychological health, by gender. Results: Of the 1245 adolescents included (15.3 ± 0.7 years), 15.8% underestimated their objective weight (boys 24.2%; girls 8.2%). Boys with underestimation had higher vigorous PA energy expenditure (β = 372.7 MET-min/week, 95%CI [25.1;720.4]), and lower daily sugar-sweetened beverages and foods consumption (β = - 0.3 points, 95%CI [- 0.7; - 0.0]) than those with accurate perception. Girls with weight underestimation had lower eating disorder (β = - 6.0 points, 95%CI [- 9.6; - 2.5]), anxiety (β = - 7.8 points, 95%CI [- 13.8; - 1.9]), and higher QoL (β = 3.3 points, 95%CI [0.0; 6.5]) scores than girls with accurate perception. Conclusion: Weight underestimation among adolescents with overweight or obesity was associated with healthier lifestyle behaviors in boys, and better psychological health (eating disorder, anxiety and QoL) in girls. Accurate perception of weight status may not be a relevant lever to improve lifestyle behaviors and psychological health.

A transport formulation of moving fronts and application to dislocation dynamics

Abstract:In this article, we consider hypersurfaces moving with normal velocity depending on the timespace coordinates and on the normal to the hypersurface. We naturally define a measure associated to this hypersurface. This measure is defined on a suitable space/unit normal/curvature configuration space. We show that, while the hypersurface stays smooth, then the measure is a solution to a linear transport equation, that we call a transport formulation. In the particular case of curves moving in the plane, we get a simple transport formulation. With this transport formulation in hands, it is then easy to complete the models of dislocations densities that were proposed in the 60’s. As a consequence, we therefore propose a closed mean field model for the dynamics of dislocations densities. AMS Classification: 35R35, 35F20.

Abstract:Childhood obesity is a worldwide epidemic. Mediterranean diet (MD) is inversely associated with childhood obesity, but the interaction with other environmental factors, such screen time, might influence the health benefits of a high MD adherence in adolescents. The aim of the present study was to assess whether an association between MD and screen time exists in European adolescents. Moreover, we also explored whether sedentary time has a modulatory effect on the association between MD and adiposity. Adherence to the MD (24 h recalls), screen time (questionnaire), pubertal development, body mass index (BMI), fat mass index (FMI) and waist circumference (WC) were evaluated in 2053 adolescents (54.7% females), aged 12.5–17.5 years. In females, MD adherence was associated with lower BMI and FMI only when they were exposed to less than 338 min/day of screen time (81.8% of females); MD adherence was also associated with lower WC only when females were exposed to less than 143 min/day of screen time (31.5% of females). No significant MD-screen time interaction was observed in males. In conclusion, screen-time-based sedentary behaviours had a modulatory effect in the association between MD adherence and adiposity in European female adolescents.

Abstract:Obesity is a multifaceted chronic condition with several contributing causes, including biological risk factors, socioeconomic status, health literacy, and numerous environmental influences. Of particular concern are the increasing rates of obesity in children and adolescents, as rates of obesity in youth in the United States have tripled within the last three decades. Youth from historically disadvantaged backgrounds tend to have higher rates of obesity compared to other groups. Adolescents often do not meet intake recommendations for certain food groups and nutrients, which may contribute to a heightened risk of obesity. With obesity disproportionately affecting adolescents (ages 12–19 years), negative effects of excess adiposity may be particularly salient during this critical period of development. The presentation of chronic cardiometabolic disease symptoms typically observed in adults, such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and inflammation, are becoming increasingly common in adolescents with obesity. Additionally, there is dynamic interplay between obesity and psychosocial health, as adolescents with obesity may have increased levels of stress, depressive symptoms, and reduced resilience. To reduce and prevent adolescent obesity, the implementation of theory-driven multicomponent school- and community-based interventions have been suggested. These interventions promote knowledge and self-efficacy for healthful practices that have the potential to progress to sustained behavior change.

Investigation of Underlying Association between Anthropometric and Cardiorespiratory Fitness Markers among Overweight and Obese Adolescents in Canada

Abstract:Background: Adolescents who experience overweight or obesity commonly persist in these conditions into adulthood, thereby elevating their vulnerability to health issues. The focus of this study is on health risk markers such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body surface area (BSA), and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The objectives include updating normative values for BMI, WC, WHtR, and BSA in Canadian adolescents, establishing cardiometabolic risk zones, and developing a composite score considering both anthropometric and CRF markers. Methods: Involving 1864 adolescents, the study used the LMS method to generate percentile norms, stratified by age and sex. Cardiometabolic risk zones were established for each marker based on Z-scores, and a composite score was created. Results: An increase in WC of 5.8 and 7.4 cm for boys and girls, respectively, was observed since 1981. Forward multiple regression analyses were conducted to assess the robustness and validity of the proposed model. The results indicated that the model explained nearly 90% (R2 = 0.890) of the common variance between the composite score and the retained independent variables. Moreover, the model demonstrated a mean absolute error (MAE) of approximately 6 percentiles, confirming its high precision. Furthermore, these analyses yielded key thresholds for identifying adolescents at risk: the 70th percentile for high cardiometabolic risk and the 85th percentile for very-high risk. Conclusions: Individually, WC or WHtR seem to be better markers for evaluating cardiometabolic risk than BMI during adolescence. However, CRF showed comparable importance to anthropometric markers in determining cardiometabolic risk. The simultaneous inclusion of anthropometric and CRF markers provides a better picture of the global cardiometabolic risk in adolescents.

Abstract:ABSTRACT — The effects of deprenyl on memory, other cognitive functions, vigilance and emotional processes were investigated in seven parkinsonian patients undergoing long‐term levodopa treatment. The patients were selected on the basis of their cognitive impairment, observed during a follow‐up study of 8–10 years. Four of the patients had progressive dementia and three did not. After deprenyl treatment lasting 4 weeks, there were two patterns of responses. Patients with slow progressive dementia failed to respond to treatment, whereas patients without progressive impairment tended to show improvement in memory and motor speed; the former group also showed more emotional changes than the latter. Typical responses in all patients treated with deprenyl were: increased arousal, paradoxical spells of tiredness, deterioration in vigilance and in set shifting, but improvement of parkinsonian disability. These preliminary findings indicate that there is a dissociation between pure motor responses and cognitive as well as other behavioural responses to deprenyl. It is probable that although enhanced availability of dopamine by MAO‐B inhibition partly explains the present neuropsychological findings, also other brain mechanisms are involved.

Abstract:We measured lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in erythrocytes of types IIb and IV hyperlipoproteinemic (HLP) human subjects in comparison with age-matched controls. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), a measure of lipid peroxidation, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), and catalase (CAT) were determined in erythrocytes. We also measured lipid parameters including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein AI, and apolipoprotein B, and antioxidant related substances such as serum albumin, free iron, ferritin, ceruloplasmin. Thirty-two subjects (females 15, males 17) with type IIb (the mean age 45.6+/-8 [S.E.]), 34 with type IV (females 16, males 18) (the mean age 47+/-10 [S.E.]), and 36 normolipidemic voluntary subjects (females 18, males 18) (the mean age 46+/-8 [S.E.]) were included in the study. Erythrocytes were prepared by classical washing method (0.9% NaCl) from venous blood samples. The mean TBARS levels in plasma and erythrocyte suspensions were found to be significantly higher in both types IIb and IV hyperlipoproteinemics. Erythrocyte SOD and GSH-Px activities were decreased but erythrocyte GR activity did not change in both types IIb and IV hyperlipoproteinemics. Erythrocyte CAT activity was decreased in type IIb, but it was increased in type IV hyperlipoproteinemics. Erythrocyte SOD activity was negatively correlated with plasma TG level, whereas plasma free iron was positively correlated with plasma TBARS level in type IV hyperlipoproteinemics. These results suggest the presence of oxidative injury in patients with type IIb or IV hyperlipoproteinemia, and that the responses of erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes to oxidant stress are different in these conditions.
Assessment of Sleep Quality in Adolescents with Overweight and Obesity Using the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS)

Abstract:Background: Adolescent overweight and obesity are a public health problem with an epidemic trend. There is growing evidence that sleep quality correlates to body weight. The aim of this study was to investigate, sleep quality in adolescents with obesity/overweight. Methods: A total of 100 adolescents with overweight/obesity aged 12–18 years were enrolled. Anthropometric parameters were recorded and a laboratory investigation in the fasting state [glucose, insulin, cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, uric acid and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)] was performed. Insulin resistance was calculated by the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance index (HOMA-IR). Sleep quality was assessed with the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS) questionnaire. Results: According to ASHS, 93% of the participants were classified as “Good Sleepers” (GSs) (score > 3.8) and 7% as “Poor Sleepers” (PSs) (score < 3.8). PSs had a statistically higher body mass index (BMI) compared to GSs (p = 0.026). Increased body mass index (BMI) (r = −0.306, p = 0.002), fast insulin (r = −0.224, p = 0.027), and HOMA-IR (r = −0.260, p = 0.010) exerted a negative effect on sleep quality. Controlling for lipids and uric acid, only TC levels appeared to have a statistically significant and specifically positive correlation with the ASHS score (r = 0.202, p = 0.045). HbA1c values and waist circumference tended to be negatively correlated, but not significant to adolescent sleep quality [(r = −0.101, p = 0.330), (r = −0.095, p = 0.359), respectively]. The influence of central obesity on the ASHS score was also explored, but no correlation was found (p = 0.566). Conclusions: Sleep quality, as reflected by the ASHS score, was associated negatively with BMI, fasting insulin levels, and insulin resistance. Furthermore, a gender difference was observed, as adolescent males were found to achieve a higher overall ASHS score compared to females.

Abstract:Body weight perception (BWP) is associated with health behaviors. Current evidence points to an increase over time in both actual and perceived weight status among adolescents, however there is limited evidence on time trends in BWP in cross-national samples of adolescents. Therefore, the aims of this study were to examine time trends in BWP between 2002 and 2018 among adolescents from 41 countries and regions, including gender and country differences and to explore the role of changes over time in country-level overweight/obesity prevalence in these trends. Data were used from five cycles (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018) of the repeated cross-sectional Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study ( n = 746,121; mean±standard deviation age 13.7 ± 1.6 years, 51.0% girls). Multilevel logistic models estimated cross-national linear time trends in adolescent BWP (correct perception, underestimation, or overestimation), adjusted for gender, age, and family affluence. Next, we tested whether country-level changes over time overweight/obesity prevalence could explain these trends in BWP among adolescents. Correct weight perception increased over time among girls, while it decreased among boys. Underestimation of weight status increased, and overestimation of weight status decreased over time among both genders, with stronger trends for girls. Furthermore, country differences in trends in both BWP and overweight/obesity were found. Changes over time in country-level overweight/obesity prevalence could not explain these trends. The linear increase over time in correct weight perception and the decrease in overestimation may have a positive effect on unhealthy weight reduction behaviors among adolescents. However, the increase in underestimation could signal a need for interventions to strengthen correct weight perception among adolescents. Several implications for policy and practice are discussed.
