Abstract:In this paper, we consider real and complex algebras as well as algebras over general fields. In Section 2, we revisit and prove several results on (quadratic) algebras over general fields. In Section 3, we show how to develop the spectral theory in the context of complex (resp. real) one-sided alternative topological algebras. As an application of the existence of spectrum, we prove the existence of nontrivial hyperinvariant linear manifolds for nonscalar (resp. nonquadratic) continuous linear operators acting on complex (resp. real) Fréchet spaces. Along the way, spectral theory is used to prove several topological counterparts of the well-known theorems of Frobenius, Hurwitz, Gelfand-Mazur, and Zorn. This is done, for example, in the context of left (resp. right) alternative topological algebras whose duals separate their elements. In Section 4, we consider real and complex algebras in various topological settings and reconsider and prove several results. For instance, it is shown that given a $ 1 < k \in \mathbb{N}$, on any locally complex algebra, there exists a unique nonzero vector space norm, say, $\|.\|$, satisfying the identity $\|a^k\| = \|a\|^k$ on the algebra. In Section 5, among other things, we revisit and slightly strengthen the celebrated theorems of Frobenius, Zorn, Gelfand-Mazur, and Hurwitz, and also give slight extensions of their topological counterparts, e.g., theorems of Albert, Kaplansky, and Urbanik-Wright to name a few, in several settings.

Spectral Synthesis on Varieties

Abstract:In his classical paper, Laurent Schwartz proved that on the real line, in every linear translation invariant space of continuous complex valued functions, which is closed under compact convergence the exponential monomials span a dense subspace. He studied so-called local ideals in the space of Fourier transforms, and his proof based on the observation that, on the one hand, these local ideals are completely determined by the exponential monomials in the space, and, on the other hand, these local ideals completely determine the space itself. On the other hand, Dimitri Gurevich gave counterexamples for Schwartz's theorem in higher dimension. In this paper we show that the ideas of localisation can be extended to general locally compact Abelian groups using abstract derivations on the Fourier algebra of compactly supported measures. Based on this method we present necessary and sufficient conditions for spectral synthesis for varieties on locally compact Abelian groups. Using localisation, in \cite{MR4789359} we proved that spectral synthesis holds on a locally compact Abelian group $G$ if and only if it holds on $G/B$, where $B$ is the closed subgroup of compact elements. This may lead to a complete characterisation of locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space, let $A$ be a partially ordered algebra, and let $\pi\colon \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)\to A$ be a positive algebra homomorphism. Under conditions on $A$ that are satisfied in a good number of cases of practical interest, it is shown that $\pi$ is represented by a unique regular spectral measure $\mu$ on the Borel $\sigma$-algebra of $X$, taking its values in the positive idempotents in $A$. The measure $\mu$, which is $\sigma$-additive in an ordered sense, represents $\pi$ via the order integral (a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral) that goes back to J.D.M. Wright and which was investigated earlier by the authors. The positive algebra homomorphism $\pi$ can be extended from $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ to a positive linear map from the accompanying $L^1$-space of $\mu$ into $A$. It is shown that, quite often, this $L^1$-space is closed under multiplication, so that it is a vector lattice algebra, and that the extended map from $L^1$ into $A$ is not only an algebra homomorphism but, even when $A$ is not a vector lattice, also a vector lattice homomorphism in a sense that is explained in the paper. When $ A$ has the countable sup property, the image of $L^1$ (or of its positive cone) is described in terms of consecutive ups and downs of the image of ${\mathrm C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ (or of its positive cone). The general results are applied in three different contexts, showing how various spectral theorems have a common order-theoretical root: representations on Banach lattices, on Hilbert spaces, and (the algebra need not consist of operators) spectral theory for JBW-algebras.

Abstract:This paper continues the study of spectral synthesis and the topologies $\tau_{\infty}$ and $\tau_r$ on the ideal space of a Banach algebra, concentrating particularly on the class of Haagerup tensor products of C$^*$-algebras. For this class, it is shown that spectral synthesis is equivalent to the Hausdorffness of $\tau_{\infty}$. Under a weak extra condition, spectral synthesis is shown to be equivalent to the Hausdorffness of $\tau_r$.

Abstract:Over the decades, Functional Analysis has been enriched and inspired on account of demands from neighboring fields, within mathematics, harmonic analysis (wavelets and signal processing), numerical analysis (finite element methods, discretization), PDEs (diffusion equations, scattering theory), representation theory; iterated function systems (fractals, Julia sets, chaotic dynamical systems), ergodic theory, operator algebras, and many more. And neighboring areas, probability/statistics (for example stochastic processes, Ito and Malliavin calculus), physics (representation of Lie groups, quantum field theory), and spectral theory for Schr\"odinger operators. We have strived for a more accessible book, and yet aimed squarely at applications; -- we have been serious about motivation: Rather than beginning with the four big theorems in Functional Analysis, our point of departure is an initial choice of topics from applications. And we have aimed for flexibility of use; acknowledging that students and instructors will invariably have a host of diverse goals in teaching beginning analysis courses. And students come to the course with a varied background. Indeed, over the years we found that students have come to the Functional Analysis sequence from other and different areas of math, and even from other departments; and so we have presented the material in a way that minimizes the need for prerequisites. We also found that well motivated students are easily able to fill in what is needed from measure theory, or from a facility with the four big theorems of Functional Analysis. And we found that the approach "learn-by-using" has a comparative advantage.
A Spectral Sequence for a Graded Linear Map

Abstract:We apply the method of spectral sequences to study classical problems in analysis. We illustrate the method by finding polynomial vector fields that commute with a given polynomial vector field and finding integrals of polynomial Hamiltonian systems. For the later we describe the integrals for the Henon-Heiles Hamiltonian which arises in celestial mechanics. The unifying feature is that these problems seek elements in the kernel of a linear operator. The spectral sequence approach emphasizes the obstructions constructed from cokernel of the operator to finding elements in the kernel.

The advantage of this approach is that we don't have restriction of normality on the class of operators we consider. Abstract:Let A be a C_0(X)-algebra. Then the multiplier algebra M(A) is a C(Y)-algebra in a natural way, where Y is the Stone-Cech compactification of X. Each x in X gives rise to an ideal J_x of A and an ideal H_x of M(A). The ideal J_x is contained in H_x, and H_x is contained in the strict closure of J_x in M(A). This paper studies the problem of determining when H_x is equal to the strict closure of J_x. THis can be interpreted as a problem of spectral synthesis type.

Abstract:The Ray-Singer isospectral theorem (1971) is applied to a general spectral function for Laplacians of twisted p-forms (say) on homogeneous Clifford-Klein factors of the three-sphere. The inducing formulae necessary to express any spectral quantity for any twisting in terms of those for cyclic subgroups of the tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral deck groups are detailed. Further, Artin's theorem allows the McKay correspondence to be obtained. The isospectral theorem is shown to yield a derivation of the Sunada construction which is equivalent to the later one by Pesce.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a compact group and let $A^n(G)$ denote the multidimensional Fourier algebra introduced by Todorov and Turowska. In this note, we first define the multidimensional version of the Varopolous algebra and show that the multidimensional Fourier algebra can be embedded into the multidimensional Varopolous algebra. Using this embedding, we also prove a result on parallel synthesis, subsuming the earlier results of Varopolous, Spronk-Turowska and Parthsarathy-Prakash.

Abstract:Spectral decomposition provides a canonical representation of an operator over a vector space in terms of its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The canonical form often facilitates discussions which, otherwise, would be complicated and involved. Spectral decomposition is of fundamental importance in many applications. The well-known GLR theory generalizes the classical result of eigendecomposition to matrix polynomials of higher degrees, but its development is based on complex numbers. This paper modifies the GLR theory for the special application to real symmetric quadratic matrix polynomials, Q( A) = MX2 + CX + K, M nonsingular, subject to the specific restriction that all matrices in the representation be realvalued. It is shown that the existence of the real spectral decomposition can be characterized through the notion of real standard pair which, in turn, can be constructed from the spectral data. Applications to a variety of challenging inverse problems are discussed.

Abstract:We prove a substantial extension of an inverse spectral theorem of Ambarzumyan, and show that it can be applied to arbitrary compact Riemannian manifolds, compact quantum graphs and finite combinatorial graphs, subject to the imposition of Neumann (or Kirchhoff) boundary conditions.

Abstract:We investigate when the algebraic numerical range is a $C$-spectral set in a Banach algebra. While providing several counterexamples based on classical ideas as well as combinatorial Banach spaces, we discuss positive results for matrix algebras and provide an absolute constant in the case of complex $2\times2$-matrices with the induced $1$-norm. Furthermore, we discuss positive results for infinite-dimensional Banach algebras, including the Calkin algebra.

Abstract:C*-algebras are widely used in mathematical physics to represent the observables of physical systems, and are sometimes taken as the starting point for rigorous formulations of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, in many cases the naive choice of an algebra of observables does not admit a C*-algebra structure, and some massaging is necessary. In this paper we investigate what properties of C*-algebras carry over to more general algebras and what modifications of the Gelfand theory of normed algebras are necessary. We use category theory as a guide and, by replacing the ordinary definition of the Gelfand spectrum with a manifestly functorial definition, we succeed in generalizing the Gelfand-Naimark theorem to locally convex *-algebras. We also recall a little-known but potentially very useful generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to completely regular, Hausdorff spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study the spectral property $(E_A)$. This property means that the difference between the approximate point spectrum and the upper semi-Fredholm spectrum coincides with the difference between the approximate point spectrum and the upper semi-Weyl spectrum. Together with local spectral theory, we explore the behavior of this property under certain topological conditions and derive characterizations for the operators that verify it. Furthermore, we establish sufficient conditions that guarantee that a bounded linear operator verifies the property $(E_A)$.

Abstract:Sparse non-Hermitian random matrices arise in the study of disordered physical systems with asymmetric local interactions, and have applications ranging from neural networks to ecosystem dynamics. The spectral characteristics of these matrices provide crucial information on system stability and susceptibility, however, their study is greatly complicated by the twin challenges of a lack of symmetry and a sparse interaction structure. In this review we provide a concise and systematic introduction to the main tools and results in this field. We show how the spectra of sparse non-Hermitian matrices can be computed via an analogy with infinite dimensional operators obeying certain recursion relations. With reference to three illustrative examples -- adjacency matrices of regular oriented graphs, adjacency matrices of oriented Erdős-Rényi graphs, and adjacency matrices of weighted oriented Erdős-Rényi graphs -- we demonstrate the use of these methods to obtain both analytic and numerical results for the spectrum, the spectral distribution, the location of outlier eigenvalues, and the statistical properties of eigenvectors.
