Abstract:In recent years, Qatar has witnessed exponential growth in the human population, urbanization, and increased anthropogenic activities, including agriculture. Potentially toxic environmental contaminants, including metals and metalloids, are commonly found in emerging economies. At high concentrations, elements such as As, Cr, and Ni can be hazardous and may lead to various health problems in humans, including cancer. The current study measured As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn concentrations in agricultural soils. Pollution levels and potential negative impacts on human and environmental health were determined using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standard methodologies. According to the study’s findings, the studied element concentrations descended in the following order: Zn > Cr > V > Ni > As > Cu > Pb > Cd. Of these, As (27.6 mg/kg), Cr (85.7 mg/kg), Ni (61.9 mg/kg), and Zn (92.3 mg/kg) concentrations were higher than average world background levels. Each of these elements also had an enrichment factor (EF > 1), indicating their anthropogenic origin. The combined pollution load index (PLI > 1) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) range values of −0.2–2.5 further indicated that the soil was up to 58% polluted. However, the ecological risk factor (Er ≤ 40.6) and potential ecological risk index (PERI = 79.6) suggested low ecological risk. A human health risk evaluation showed that only As, with a hazard index (HI) of 1.3, posed a noncarcinogenic risk to infants. Additionally, As, Cr, and Ni, with total carcinogenic risk (TCR) values of 1.18 × 10−4 and 2.06 × 10−4 for adults and children, respectively, proved carcinogenic to both age groups. The elements’ carcinogenic risk (CR) potential descended in the following order: Ni > As > Cr. Additionally, for both adults and children, oral ingestion is the most likely exposure pathway. Our findings support the need for closer monitoring of potentially toxic metals and metalloids levels in cultivated soils and farm produce in Qatar. Reducing the elements’ bioavailability in soil and developing innovative remediation technologies is needed to limit potential risks to human health. Further studies on As, Cr, and Ni gastrointestinal bioaccessibilities are needed to fully understand the effects after long-term exposure and the cancer-causing potential of these elements over a lifetime.

Abstract:The present work's objective is to give a comprehensive overview of the quality of groundwater in Qatar in terms of heavy metals content as well as investigating the cause and effect of the elevation in their levels above the WHO/US-EPA standards. The scope of the study included (1) physical and chemical analysis of 82 groundwater samples collected from various locations around Qatar, (2) development of ArcGIS maps depicting the variations in the levels, (3) assessment of the human health risks associated with the existing levels using three of the most used models which are: Hazard index (HI), Nemerow comprehensive pollution index (NCPI) and Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR). There is no extensive study ever reported to assess the health risks linked with the consumption of groundwater characterized with such heavy metals levels in Qatar. The chronic daily intake (CDI) of the investigated heavy metals (Ag, Mn, Cr, V, Mo and Sr) through ingestion and dermal pathways had a range of 1.4 × 10 –5 –6.7 × 10 –1 mg/kg/day while the NCPI's range was reported at 0–4.39. Moreover, the HI and ILCR were found to have a range of 0–3.2 and 5.6 × 10 –4 –5.5 × 10 –2 , respectively. The assessment of health risks, conducted in the present work, could be beneficial in building the baseline of heavy metals levels in groundwater in Qatar. This will also help in the determination of any future contamination of groundwater.

Abstract:Groundwater is the only freshwater source for agriculture and domestic use in the Khulais region of Saudi Arabia (SA). Anthropogenic activities, particularly agricultural runoff and lithogenic sources cause groundwater contamination, posing health risks to all generations (infant, child, and adult) via ingestion, dermal, and inhalation exposure routes. The configuration of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health concerns posed by contaminated water is, thus, a time-sensitive requirement. This study uses multivariate statistical techniques to assess health risks and to identify health impacts and pollution sources. Sampling of groundwater at nineteen sampling sites was carried out in two seasons (winter and summer) of 2021. The samples were analyzed for major ions and toxic metals. Results show that the average hazard quotient (HQ) and health hazard index (HHI) in infants was higher than 1 for most of toxic metal in both the seasons. The health risks associated with ingestion were significantly higher than those associated with the dermal and inhalation pathways. The aquifer’s carcinogenic risk ranged from high to extremely high in terms of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) concentrations. The estimated health risk values may have a negative impact on people’s health, which suggests that active aquifer management should be implemented. Multivariate statistical analyses were accomplished to determine the primary contamination sources in the aquifer system. The total dissolved solid (TDS) correlated strongly among chloride (Cl − ), sulphate (SO 4 2− ), sodium (Na + ), potassium (K + ), magnesium (Mg 2+ ), calcium (Ca 2+ ), iron (Fe), strontium (Sr), fluoride (F − ) and bromide (Br − ), which caused by seawater intrusion within winter and summer seasons. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) identifies two clusters and one independent case within the summer and winter seasons. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant variations in the concentrations of Mg 2+ , Aluminum (Al), Cobalt (Co), Cr, Ni, and Pb in winter, while TDS, electrical conductivity (EC), Cl − , SO 4 2− , Na + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Sr, F − and Br − in summer. This research demonstrates that aquifer cleanup and management protocols should be implemented, encouraged, and maintained. Applying the best hygienic practices and pre-clean-up of polluted groundwater is recommended before application for different purposes.
Groundwater Contamination in Arid Coastal Areas: Qatar as a Case Study

Abstract:The Arab region is located in an arid environment and suffers from water scarcity and poor water quality which are expected to become more severe in coming years due to global warming. In this study, the groundwater quality of 205 wells in Qatar was investigated. The physical parameters of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, inorganic carbon (IC), and organic carbon (OC) were determined. The study characterized the concentrations of major anions of Cl, F, Br, NO3, PO4, and SO4, and major cations of Ca, K, Mg, and Na. Importantly, metals and metalloids including V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Ba, Pb, and U were determined. The results revealed that the groundwater of all wells is not drinkable due to high salinity (average TDS 4598 mg/L and salinity 0.4%, respectively). Additionally, average concentrations of major anions Cl, SO4, and F were 1472, 1064, and 1.9 mg/L, respectively, and all exceed the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water. However, NO3 concentration in 11 out of 205 wells was above the WHO guidelines of 50 mg/L due to intensive agriculture and fertilizer applications. Major cations of Ca, K, Mg, and Na were higher than WHO guidelines with average concentrations of 345, 63, 127, and 923 mg/L, respectively. All trace metals were much lower than the WHO guidelines for drinking water; however, the vanadium (V) average concentration in groundwater of all wells was 31 μg/L, which is five times higher than the Dutch guidelines (whereas the WHO has no guidelines for V). The groundwater of Qatar is dominated by Ca and Mg sulfates in Sabkha environments and dominated by NaCl in the coastal zones from evaporate environments consisting of coastal salt flats, salt pans, estuaries, and lagoons supersaturated by salts and the influence of sea water intrusion.

Abstract:Surface soils in urban regions play a crucial role in controlling regional climatic patterns and sustaining ecological equilibrium. This study evaluates the contamination status, distribution patterns and ecological risks of trace metals (TMs) in the soil. Twenty-two sets of surface soils were collected and analyzed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, to estimate the levels of TMs, including As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sr, V, Y, and Zn. The study reveals a high degree of spatial variability in the distribution of TMs, attributable to the influence of various contamination sources. Simultaneously, descriptive statistical analyses unveil that contents of Cu, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Ba, Y, Zn and Sr in the soils were higher than the local background values. Furthermore, most of the surface soil sampling demonstrated moderate to heavily pollution with a few indicating light pollution. The northern, north-western and central parts in the surveyed zone, particularly in the vicinity of Kabelmal, Naimatabad, and Waddi County, were found to be heavily contaminated. The presence of As, Pb, and Zn was primarily influenced by anthropogenic sources, including agricultural and traffic emissions, while Cr and Y were mainly due to industrial emissions. In addition, Ni, Cr and Co were largely attributed to human activities. This provides fundamental information on TMs in surface soils and underscores the necessity for long-term monitoring to safeguard soil and environmental health.

Abstract:Soil contamination is a major issue that endangers the ecology in most countries. Total concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, VFe, and Zn were determined by analyzing soil samples from 32 surface soil samples in southwest Saudi Arabia, including certain areas of Al-Baha. Kriging techniques were used to create maps of the distribution of metal. To assess the levels of soil contamination in the research area, principal component analysis (PCA), contamination factors (CF), and pollution load index were used. The results show the stable model gave the best fit to the As and Zn semivariograms. The circular model fits the Cd, Co, and Ni semivariograms the best, while the exponential model fits the Cr, V, and Fe semivariograms the best. For Ni and Pb, respectively, spherical and Gaussian models are fitted. The findings demonstrated two clusters containing different soil heavy metal concentrations. According to the data, there were two different pollution levels in the research region: 36.58% of it is strongly contaminated, while 63.41% of it has a moderate level of contamination (with average levels of these metals 5.28 ± 5.83, 0.81 ± 0.19, 18.65 ± 6.22, 45.15 ± 23.25, 60.55 ± 23.74, 972.30 ± 223.50, 33.45 ± 14.11, 10.05 ± 5.13, 84.15 ± 30.72, 97.40 ± 30.05, and 43,245.00 ± 8942.95 mg kg-1 for As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Fe, and Zn, respectively). The research area's poor management practices are reflected in the current results, which raised the concentration of harmful elements in the soil's surface layers. Ultimately, the outcomes of pollution concentration and spatial distribution maps could aid in informing decision-makers when creating suitable heavy metal mitigation strategies.
Assessment of potentially toxic elements and health risks of agricultural soil in Southwest Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Abstract The rise of emerging pollutants in the environment as a result of economic growth poses a worldwide challenge for the management of environmental and human health. The objective of this study was to assess the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the agricultural soil of southwest Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and to evaluate the potential health risks associated with these elements. Soil samples were collected from 31 farms, and the concentrations of As, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Fe were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Various contamination and health risk indices, along with multivariate analyses, were employed in the evaluation. The mean concentrations of PTEs (mg/kg) followed the order: Fe (15,556) > Zn (53.36) > Ni (21.78) > Cu (11.92) > Pb (10.42) > As (2.64). The average PTE concentrations were found to be lower than background levels and the world-soil average. Contamination indices indicated that the studied soil was moderately enriched and contaminated for As, slightly enriched for Zn and Ni, and not enriched for Cu and Pb. This suggests that the PTEs in the soil do not pose a significant threat, although some individual samples exhibited significant enrichment for Zn and Pb. Multivariate analyses suggested a geogenic source for the PTEs, with some contribution from anthropogenic factors for As, Zn, and Pb. The average hazard index values ranged from 0.000293 (Zn) to 0.030561 (Fe) for adults and from 0.002726541 (Zn) to 0.284670158 (Fe) for children, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic risk to the population in the study area. Additionally, the Lifetime Cancer Risk values for adults and children ranged from 6.94 × 10 −6 to 6.46 × 10 −5 for As and from 7.13 × 10 −8 to 6.65 × 10 −7 for Pb, suggesting acceptable or tolerable carcinogenic risk and no significant health hazards.

Abstract:The current work aimed to assess contamination and human health risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in agricultural soil of the Al-Ahsa Oasis, Saudi Arabia. For the purpose of evaluating the potential risks to human health associated with ingestion, skin contact, and inhalation, the chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), cancer risk (CR), and total lifetime cancer risk (LCR) were calculated in 30 soil samples. The spatial distribution and possible sources of HMs were investigated using GIS and multivariate analysis. The descending order of PTE averages (dw, μg/g) was Fe (11790) > Mn (176.43) > Zn (54.43) > Cr (28.67) > Ni (14.53) > V (12.33) > Cu (10.83) > Pb (5.23) > Co (2.87) > As (2.27). The average CDI for all PTEs from ingestion pathway in children indicates an increase of approximated 9 times compared to adults. The HI values varied from 1.969 × 10 -4 to 2.318 × 10 -2 for Adults, and from 1.835 × 10 -3 to 2.158 × 10 -1 for children, suggesting there is no significant non-carcinogenic risk to the people inhabiting the Al-Ahsa Oasis. The CRs and LCR for Cr, As, and Pb in children was found to be significantly greater than that of adults. LCR values for As, Pb, and Cr varied from lower than 1 × 10 -6 to 1 × 10 -4 , indicating no significant health hazards to acceptable carcinogenic risk.

Abstract:Abstract Due to urbanization and industrialization, there has been an increase in solid waste generation and has become a global concern and leakage of leachate from landfills contaminate the soil and groundwater and hence can have a severe impact on human health. The present study aimed to determine the composition of toxic metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, As) and heavy metals (Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb) in soil and water by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). To ensure accuracy during the analysis of Cr, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, Ba, Hg, and Pb in real samples, certified reference material (CRM, SRM 2709a) of San Joaquin soil and water (SRM 1640a) were analyzed and results were presented in terms of % recovery studies. The mean concentration of all the metals in soil and water did not exceed the limit set by the European Community (EU), WHO, and US EPA except Cu where the permissible limit defined by the EU is 50–140 mg/kg in soil. The soil is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with respect to all metals except the Cu and Pb. Among the average daily dose (ADD) of soil, ADD ing and ADD inh for children had the maximum dose for all metals than adults while ADD derm was higher in adults. Hazard quotient (HQ) trend in both adults and children was found in order HQ ing > HQ derm > HQ inh of soil for all metals except Ba which followed HQ ing > HQ inh > HQ derm . Hazard index (HI) values of soil for Cr and Pb in children were 7 and 7.5 times higher than adults respectively. Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) value for Cr by different exposure pathways of soil was 5.361 × 10 −4 for children which are at the lower borderline of risk for cancer.

Abstract:In a global context, trace element pollution assessment in complex multi-aquifer groundwater systems is important, considering the growing concerns about water resource quality and sustainability worldwide. This research addresses multiple objectives by integrating spatial, chemometric, and indexical study approaches, for assessing trace element pollution in the multi-aquifer groundwater system of the Al-Hassa Oasis, Saudi Arabia. Groundwater sampling and analysis followed standard methods. For this purpose, the research employed internationally recognized protocols for groundwater sampling and analysis, including standardized techniques outlined by regulatory bodies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Average values revealed that Cr (0.041) and Fe (2.312) concentrations surpassed the recommended limits for drinking water quality, posing serious threats to groundwater usability by humans. The trace elemental concentrations were ranked as: Li < Mn < Co < As < Mo < Zn < Al < Ba < Se < V < Ni < Cr < Cu < B < Fe < Sr. Various metal(loid) pollution indices, including degree of contamination, heavy metal evaluation index, heavy metal pollution index, and modified heavy metal index, indicated low levels of groundwater pollution. Similarly, low values of water pollution index and weighted arithmetic water quality index were observed for all groundwater points, signifying excellent groundwater quality for drinking and domestic purposes. Spatial distribution analysis showed diverse groundwater quality across the study area, with the eastern and western parts displaying a less desirable quality, while the northern has the best, making water users in the former more vulnerable to potential pollution effects. Thus, the zonation maps hinted the necessity for groundwater quality enhancement from the western to the northern parts. Chemometric analysis identified both human activities and geogenic factors as contributors to groundwater pollution, with human activities found to have more significant impacts. This research provides the scientific basis and insights for protecting the groundwater system and ensuring efficient water management.

Abstract:Geochemical mapping is the base of knowledge needed to determine the critical contents of potential toxic elements and the potentially hazardous regions on the planet. This work presents maps of baseline values of chemical elements in the soils of Sal Island (Cape Verde) and the assessment of their ecological and human health risks. According to the results, Ba, Co, Ni, and V baseline values are above the international guidelines for agricultural and residential proposed uses. Arsenic in the soil overlying the Ancient Eruptive Complex shows a high potential ecological risk factor. It is not clear if high As contents in soils have a geogenic or anthropogenic source. Hazard indexes (HI) were calculated for children and adults. For children, HI is higher than 1 for Co, Cr, and Mn, indicating potential non-carcinogenic risk. These elements are present in high content in soils covering Quaternary sediments, the Monte Grande-Pedra Lume Formation, and the Ancient Eruptive Complex, inducing belief in a geogenic source. For the other elements and for adults, there is no potential non-carcinogenic risk. Cancer risk (CR) was calculated for As, Cd, Cr, and Ni exposures for adults and children, and the results are mainly lower than the carcinogenic target risk value, indicating no cancer risk. Only in a few soil samples are CR results slightly higher than the carcinogenic target risk of 1 × 10−4 2 × 10−6 for adults exposed to Cr by inhalation. It is important to emphasize that these results of the health risk associated with exposure are likely to overestimate the bioavailable fractions of the elements in the soil once it is used as aqua regia instead of physiological fluids to digest the soil. However, since measured concentrations of potential toxic elements in soil reveal that they can be harmful to both the environment and human health, regional activities such as agriculture or water exploitation must be controlled by competent authorities. These conclusions highlight the insights and the applicability of soil geochemistry surveys for future policy progress, which are particularly relevant in developing countries like the Cape Verde archipelago.

Abstract:This study investigates the prevalence, distribution, and ecological consequences of 21 heavy metals (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn) in the soils between the Mahi and Dhadhar rivers in Gujarat, India. It aims to assess the seasonal variations in soil contamination and the potential human health risk associated with the heavy metal exposure through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact pathways. Soil samples were collected from 57 sites across three distinct seasons and analyzed using indices such as the geo-accumulation index, contamination factor, pollution load index, ecological risk factor, and global potential ecological risk. Human health risks were also evaluated for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. The findings reveal significant soil contamination, especially during the Monsoon and Post-Monsoon seasons, with heavy metals like Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, and Pb posing considerable ecological threats. Cr and Ni were identified as presenting the highest carcinogenic risks, while Fe and Cr posed major non-carcinogenic challenges. Seasonal variations significantly influenced heavy metal concentrations and distribution patterns. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive policies and sustainable practices to mitigate soil contamination and protect environmental health. It emphasizes the critical role of human activities, such as industrial, agricultural, and mining operations, in soil degradation and calls for increased community awareness and action to address these challenges.

Abstract:Introduction: Soil pollution directly impacts food quality and the lives of both humans and animals. The concentration of heavy metals in Egypt's drain-side soils is rising, which is detrimental to the quality of the soil and crops. The key to reducing the detrimental effects on the ecosystem is having accurate maps of the spatial distribution of heavy metals and the subsequent use of environmentally sustainable remediation approaches. The objective of this work is to assess soil contamination utilizing spatial mapping of heavy metals, determine contamination levels using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and calculate both the contamination severity and the potential for bioremediation in the soils surrounding the main drain of Bahr El-Baqar. Furthermore, evaluating the capacity of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and "Actinomycetes) to degrade heavy elements in the soil. Methodology: 146 soil sample locations were randomly selected near the Bahr El-Baqar drain to examine the degree of soil pollution Ordinary Kriging (OK), method was used to map and analyze the spatial distribution of soil contamination by seven heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ni). Modified contamination degree (mCd) and PCA were used to assess the research area's soil pollution levels. The process involved isolating, identifying, and classifying the microorganisms present in the soil of the study area. The study findings showed that variography suggested the Stable model effectively matched pH, SOM, and Cd values. Furthermore, the exponential model proved suitable for predicting Fe, Pb and Ni, while the spherical model was appropriate for Ni, Cr, and Zn. Results: The study revealed three levels of contamination, with an extremely high degree (EHDC) affecting approximately 97.49% of the area. The EHDC exhibited average concentrations of heavy metals: 79.23 ± 17.81 for Cr, 20,014.08 ± 4545.91 for Fe, 201.31 ± 112.97 for Zn, 1.33 ± 1.37 for Cd, 40.96 ± 26.36 for Pb, 211.47 ± 13.96 for As, and 46.15 ± 9.72 for Ni. Isolation and identification of microorganisms showed a significant influence on the breakdown of both organic and inorganic pollutants in the environment. The study demonstrated exceptionally high removal efficiency for As and Cr, with a removal efficiency reached 100%, achieved by Rhizopus oryzae , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Bacillus thuringiensis . Conclusion: This study has designated management zones for soil contamination by mapping soil pollutants, geo-identified them, and found potential microorganisms that could significantly reduce soil pollution levels.

Abstract:The present study aims to evaluate the level of heavy metal contamination of well water and soil in the Al-Quwayiyah governorate, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The samples for the study were selected from 10 different sites and then tested for the presence of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and iron (Fe). The physicochemical properties of well water and soil samples were investigated. Multivariate analyses including the correlation matrix (CM), principal component analysis and analysis of variance were used to specify the correlation between and the impact of heavy metals contamination of soil on well water. The potential ecological risk was assessed using the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), and the degree of contamination (Cd) to identify the sources of heavy metals in the soil samples. Two ratios prescribed by the SQG’s were used. The first was “effect range low (ERL) to effect range median (ERM) values” and the second was “threshold effect level (TEL) to probable effect level (PEL)”. The results revealed that these ratios did not exceed the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidelines. The EF values of the soil samples showed minimal to deficient enrichment with Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and As, and extremely low enrichment with Cd and Pb. The data obtained demonstrated that all the sites were polluted with very low levels of these heavy metals. The results strongly and positively correlated the metals in well water with these in soil and clarified that all metals were of a lithogenic origin.

Abstract:Soil contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the Malwa region belt of Punjab, India, can be a serious concern as a result of intensive agricultural practices and overuse of agrochemicals. The main objectives of the present study were to evaluate the spatial distribution, geochemical signature, and contamination level/health risk of PTEs in 76 soil samples (0–10 cm) collected from the three districts viz. Muktar, Faridkot, and Moga of Punjab, India. The result shows that PTEs concentrations vary widely in the region, with Fe and Mn distribution patterns being mostly coherent with each other. When compared to the Indian natural soil background values, the average concentration of Pb and Zn were higher than the limit, only Pb exceeded the average values of the world background and upper continental crust (UCC). Spatial autocorrelation plotted with a local indicator of spatial association (LISA) in GeoDa software version 1.18 was used to identify hotspots. A positive spatial autocorrelation (>0.2) was indicated with Moran's I values for Pb, V, Mn, Cu, and Cr, being highest for Pb. A principal component analysis (PCA) identified the major geo-chemical patterns of Fe-Al-V-Cr and TOC-Mn-Zn-HCO3−, which were positively loaded on PC1. This indicates that Fe/Al-oxyhydroxides and organic matter play a dominant role in controlling metal mobility in soils. This can be further substantiated with the Spearman's rank correlation values. The contamination factor indicates that only Pb and Zn (15.7% and 3.9% samples, respectively) were under high risk. This could be due to the excessive application of chemical fertilizers. The large range of Cdeg values suggests that there are variations in the degree of soil pollution due to PTEs. A little over 3.9% of samples had significant contamination, compared to 72.3% of samples with low contamination and 23.6% of samples with moderate contamination. Human non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk levels were investigated. The HI values for adult ranged from 0.00 to 0.2, and values for children ranged from 0.009 to 1.2. These findings suggest that both children and adults are not at potential risk, except in a few locations. Overall, the results of this study provide the current baseline status of toxic elements in agricultural soil. This would be helpful for developing strategies for sustainable management of the soil resources in the region, as well as for future monitoring programs of the soil quality in the Malwa region as a whole, to track any changes in the contamination levels over time.

Abstract:Recent decades have witnessed a danger to food security as well as to human health because of pollutants’ negative impact on crop quality. An accurate estimate of the heavy metal concentrations in Egypt’s north Nile Delta is required to lower the high concentration levels of heavy metal in the soil as a means to develop a remediation strategy that stabilizes heavy metals in contaminated soil. Using a geo-accumulation index (I-geo), contamination factor (CF), Improved Nemerow’s Pollution Index (Pn), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), supported by GIS; principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis, six heavy metals (As, Co, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn) were analyzed from 15 soil profile layers (61 soil samples) to determine the extent of the soil contamination in the area studied. The findings demonstrate the widespread I-geo contamination of As, Co, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn in different layers. The ranges for the I-geo values were from −8.2 to 5.3; 4.11 to 1.8; 6.4 to 1.9; −9.7 to 2.8; −6.3 to 2.9; and from −12.5 to 2.4 for As, Co, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn, respectively. I-geo categorization therefore ranged from uncontaminated to strongly/extremely contaminated. The CF values varied from 0.01 to 60.6; 0.09 to 5.17; 0.02 to 10.51; 0 to 10.51; 0.02 to 7.12; and 0 to 7.68 for As, Co, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn, respectively. In decreasing sequence, the CFs are arranged as follows: CF (As), CF (Ni), CF (Zn), CF (V), CF (Cu), and CF (Co). Most of the research region (71.9%) consisted of a class of moderately to heavily polluted areas. Additionally, a large portion of the study region (49.17%) has a very high risk of contamination, as per the results of the PERI index. The use of a correlation matrix, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis(PCA) to evaluate the variability in the soil’s chemical content revealed the impact from anthropogenic activities on the heavy metal concentration levels in the study area’s soil. The current findings reflect the poor quality of management in the research region, which led to the increase in the concentration of heavy metals in the soil. Decision-makers could use the outcomes from the spatial distribution maps for contaminants and their levels as a basis for creating heavy metal mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Qatar produces more than 850,000 m 3 /day of highly treated wastewater. The present study aims at characterizing the effluents coming out of three central wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of chemical pollutants including metals, metalloids and antibiotics commonly used in the country. Additionally, the study is assessing human health risks associated with the exposure to the treated wastewater (TWW) via dermal and ingestion routes. Although the origin of domestic wastewater is desalinated water (the only source of fresh water), the results show that the targeted parameters in TWW were within the international standards. Concentrations of Cl, F, Br, NO 3 , NO 2 , SO 4 and PO 4 , were 389, <0.1, 1.2, 25, <0.1, 346, and 2.8 mg/L, respectively. On the other hand, among all cations, metals and metalloids, only boron (B) was 2.1 mg/L which is higher than the Qatari guidelines for TWW reuse in irrigation of 1.5 mg/L. Additionally, strontium (Sr) and thallium (Tl) were detected with relatively high concentrations of 30 mg/L and 12.5 μg/L, respectively, due to their natural and anthropogenic sources. The study found that the low concentrations of all tested metals and metalloids do not pose any risk to human health. However, Tl presents exposure levels above the 10 % of oral reference dose ( HQ = 0.4) for accidental oral ingestion of TWW. The results for antibiotics show that exposure for adults and children to TWW are far below the admissible daily intakes set using minimum therapeutic dose and considering uncertainty factors. Treated wastewater of Qatar can be used safely for irrigation. However, further investigations are still needed to assess microbiological quality.

Abstract:The present study aims to assess soil quality and potential health risks associated with soil pollution of the Batala region of Punjab, India. Physico-chemical parameters such as pH (6.69–7.43), electrical conductivity (0.17–0.33 mS/cm), and total organic carbon (1.01–5.94%) were observed to be within permissible limits. The maximum mean content (mg/kg) of heavy metals in soil was found as Fe (4060.93), Zn (444.33), Mn (278.5), Pb (23.16), Cu (21.78), Ni (20.16), Co (7.14), and Cd (1.85) which were below the prescribed limits but beyond the geochemical background limits of world soil. For rice grain samples, metal content (mg/kg) was seen as Fe (307.01) > Zn (12.41) > Mn (7.43) > Cu (4.57) and was below the permissible limits. The mean bioaccumulation factor for various metals was in the order as Zn > Cu > Fe > Mn. Single and integrated soil pollution indices revealed that among 18 sites, six were highly contaminated. The ecological risk index (Er) has shown that contamination of soil with Cd, Zn, and Ni was higher than that of other metals studied. The estimated daily intake of metal (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) were higher for children than those for adults. Spatial variability based on metal pollution load and soil quality was also determined using cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA). During CA, soil samples from 18 sites formed three statistically significant clusters based on the level of metal pollution at the specific site. PCA showed that all variables were reduced into two main components 1 and 2 with eigenvalues as 3.82 (47% variance) and 1.53 (19.7% variance), respectively.

Abstract:Metal contamination of vegetables is a major concern, especially in areas where irrigation has been used for a long time. The Central Ethiopian Rift Valley Region is highly affected due to the heavy use of agrochemicals throughout the year. Although some studies have been conducted on the concentration and level of heavy metal pollution, little attention has been paid to their impact on human health. This study determined the concentrations of nine metals (As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in a soils and vegetables (tomatoes and onions) irrigated by Lake Ziway, Ethiopia. An inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) was used to determine the heavy metal levels. Moreover, the study evaluated the health risks associated with consuming contaminated vegetables by employing major indices, including non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Pb, As, Hg, and Cr in all tomato and onion samples and the average Zn, Pb, Cd, and Hg levels in all soil samples exceeded the FAO/WHO threshold. Non-carcinogenic health risk estimates showed that As, Pb, Hg, and Co for children and Pb and Co for adults had THQ values greater than 1, indicating the possibility of systemic health risks. Carcinogenic health risk showed that Ni posed a risk of developing cancer for both adults and children, with values ranging from 10 −3 to 10 −1 . In addition, children are likely to have a higher cancer risk due to exposure to As and Cr. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness among stakeholders and implement effective monitoring policies to safeguard public health both within and beyond the study area.
