Abstract:The dominant source of drinking water in rural Nevada, United States, is privately-owned domestic wells. Because the water from these wells is unregulated with respect to government guidelines, it is the owner's responsibility to test their groundwater for heavy metals and other contaminants. Arsenic, lead, cadmium, and uranium have been previously measured at concentrations above Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines in Nevada groundwater. This is a public health concern because elevated levels of these metals are known to have negative health effects. We recruited individuals through a population health study, the Healthy Nevada Project, to submit drinking water samples from domestic wells for testing. Water samples were returned from 174 households with private wells. We found 22 % had arsenic concentrations exceeding the EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 μg/L. Additionally, federal, state, or health-based guidelines were exceeded for 8 % of the households for uranium and iron, 6 % for lithium and manganese, 4 % for molybdenum, and 1 % for lead. The maximum observed concentrations of arsenic, uranium, and lead were ∼80, ∼5, and ∼1.5 times the EPA guideline values, respectively. 41 % of households had a treatment system and submitted both pre- and post-treatment water samples from their well. The household treatments were shown to reduce metal concentrations, but concentrations above guideline values were still observed. Many treatment systems cannot reduce the concentration below guideline values because of water chemistry, treatment failure, or improper treatment techniques. These results show the pressing need for continued education and outreach on regular testing of domestic well waters, proper treatment types, and health effects of metal contamination. These findings are potentially applicable to other arid areas where groundwater contamination of naturally occurring heavy metals occurs.

Abstract:Arsenic cannot be tasted, seen or smelled and can vary in concentration between water wells even in condensed areas. American domestic well water is not regulated to meet the same drinking water standards as other types of water supplies and often contains arsenic. If arsenic is not detected in a well water sample, it is unlikely to be found later. Conversely, if it is detected in a new well, it is recommended to retest six months later as levels may fluctuate in the first months following well construction. It is up to the well owner to test their water and remove arsenic through commercially available water filters. If it is not detected and removed via filtration, a variety of serious, yet common, medical conditions may arise from chronic arsenic exposure, some of which are life-threatening. These include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, skin cancer, renal, bladder and lung cancers, polyneuropathy and cardiac QTc prolongation. Testing is best done through urine speciation if an initial total urine arsenic concentration is elevated. Consider a complete blood count, renal and liver function tests, an electrocardiogram as well as a urinalysis assessing for evidence of hematuria when examining patients with histories concerning for chronic arsenic exposure.

Abstract:Dowsing for danger Arsenic is a metabolic poison that is present in minute quantities in most rock materials and, under certain natural conditions, can accumulate in aquifers and cause adverse health effects. Podgorski and Berg used measurements of arsenic in groundwater from ∼80 previous studies to train a machine-learning model with globally continuous predictor variables, including climate, soil, and topography (see the Perspective by Zheng). The output global map reveals the potential for hazard from arsenic contamination in groundwater, even in many places where there are sparse or no reported measurements. The highest-risk regions include areas of southern and central Asia and South America. Understanding arsenic hazard is especially essential in areas facing current or future water insecurity. Abstract:Arsenic toxicity in drinking water is a global issue, with chronic exposure causing cancer and other health concerns. Groundwater from geochemically similar granites from mainland Nova Scotia, Canada, can have high and low levels of arsenic. The origin of this variation is uncertain, but different mineral hosts for arsenic could explain the disparity. The lability of arsenic from different minerals was assessed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry combined with calculations based upon well water data. Pyrite has the highest arsenic concentration (mean: 2300 μg/g, n = 9), is unstable in the groundwater system, and can release arsenic during oxidation. However, oxidation products replacing pyrite can adsorb arsenic, modifying the amount released. Cordierite has low arsenic concentrations (mean: 7.3 μg/g, n = 5) but is abundant and relatively soluble. Thus, cordierite could be a previously unrecognized source of arsenic in metapelitic rocks from metamorphic terranes. Pyrite from one of the granites studied was not oxidized, which in addition to the absence of cordierite in these same granites could account for the lower arsenic levels observed in associated well water. The results of this study can be used to identify potential geogenic sources of arsenic in other granitic terranes and reduce the risk of exposure through drinking water.

Abstract:Located in Yunnan province, China, Yangzonghai Lake is a fault-controlled highland lake where arsenic concentration suddenly increased 20-fold in 2008, which raised great environmental concerns. It is therefore a nice prototype to study the natural and/or anthropogenic influences on the arsenic geochemistry of the sediment in highland lakes. In this study, lacustrine sediments were recovered from the lake and the differences in the occurrence of arsenic between the surface (0–10 cm depth) and sub-surface sediments (>20 cm) were investigated. The arsenic distribution in the sub-surface sediment was in accordance with the locations of springs, suggesting that arsenic therein was affected by groundwater. The surface sediment, however, was affected by human contamination carried by Yangzong River. In the sub-surface sediment, arsenic concentrations increased with pH values but decreased with redox potentials. Higher grain sizes corresponded to lower arsenic contents. Arsenic was strongly positively correlated with Sb and Bi due to their similar geochemical behaviors. In the surface sediment, however, the human activities increased the arsenic concentration in the sediment and weakened the correlations between arsenic occurrence, pH/Eh values, grain size, and trace metals. Although the average differences in the trace element concentrations between surface and sub-surface sediments over the entire Yangzonghai Lake were less than 15 %, the pairwise differences were statistically significant, and the southern portion of the lake showed the greatest anthropogenic influence. This research will provide important information on the geochemistry and environmental science of arsenic in fault-controlled highland lakes.

Abstract:The human exposure to groundwater contamination with toxic elements is a worldwide concern. In this study, multivariate statistics coupled with probabilistic and deterministic risk estimation approaches were applied to 173 groundwater samples of Urmia aquifer (UA) to evaluate human health risks in relation to the consumption of groundwater contaminated with toxic elements. The concentrations of aluminum (Al), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were below their corresponding maximum permissible levels as advised by the WHO, USEPA, and Iranian guidelines. However, arsenic (As), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), and selenium (Se) were elevated at some locations. Monte Carlo simulation-based probabilistic risk estimation suggested ingestion as the dominant pathway for water-hosted element exposure. Mean values of hazard index estimated for As exposure from combined ingestion and dermal contact pathways exceeded the safe level of 1.0 for both adults and children, indicated potential non-carcinogenic health risks. The total cancer risk induced by groundwater As exceeded the acceptable limit of 1 × 10–4. Sensitivity analysis highlighted exposure duration, element concentration in water, and average time as the most significant variables causing the probable health risks. Speciation modeling using PHREEQC highlighted the occurrence of As(V) and As(III) in groundwater of the UA. Reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and clay minerals was identified as the main controlling mechanism of As mobilization. This communication emphasizes the need for appropriate approaches in mitigating toxic element contamination of water resources in coastal parts of the UA to safeguard public health from carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks.

Abstract:The Hetao region is one of the regions with the most serious problem of the greatest measured arsenic concentrations in China. The enrichment of arsenic in groundwater may poses a great risk to the health of local residents. A comprehensive understanding of the groundwater quality, spatial distribution characteristics and hazard of the high arsenic in groundwater is indispensable for the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources and resident health. This study selected six environmental factors, climate, human activity, sedimentary environment , hydrogeology , soil, and others, as the independent input variables to the model, compared three machine learning algorithms (support vector machine, extreme gradient boosting, and random forest), and mapped unsafe arsenic to estimate the population that may be exposed to unhealthy conditions in the Hetao region. The results show that nearly half the number of the 605 sampling wells for arsenic exceeded the WHO provisional guide value for drinking water , the water chemistry of groundwater are mainly Na-HCO 3 -Cl or Na-Mg-HCO 3 -Cl type water, and the groundwater with excessive arsenic concentration is mainly concentrated in the ancient stream channel influence zone and the Yellow River crevasse splay. The results of factor importance explanation revealed that the sedimentary environment was the key factor affecting the primary high arsenic groundwater concentration, followed by climate and human activities. The random forest algorithm produced the probability distribution of high arsenic groundwater that is consistent with the observed results. The estimated area of groundwater with excessive arsenic reached 38.81 %. An estimated 940,000 people could be exposed to high arsenic in groundwater.

Abstract:Urbanization involving the excavation and reuse of arsenic-bearing geological materials may pose human health risks. We investigated the distribution and sources of soil arsenic at a coastal reclamation site in the Pearl River Delta, China, and proposed risk management strategies. Analysis of 899 soil samples revealed an average of 58.97mg/kg arsenic, with a maximum of 1450mg/kg, mainly in fill material obtained from a local island. Integrative analysis combining reclamation history, regional geology, and bedrock mineralogy conclusively identified hydrothermally altered arsenic-bearing sulfide minerals within extensively fractured bedrock as the primary source of arsenic. Physical weathering and anthropogenic rock blasting produced discrete arsenic-rich particles that were directly transported into soils during land reclamation and accumulated to potential hazardous levels. Oral, dermal, and inhalation pathways were identified as primary exposures for future populations. Integrated engineering and institutional controls, coupled with long-term monitoring, were recommended to mitigate risks. The results highlight the importance of identifying specific geogenic and anthropogenic sources that contribute to heavy metal enrichment of soils in reclaimed areas where native bedrock naturally contains elevated level of metals, supporting evidence-based best practices for risk management and future land use.

Abstract:Arsenic poses a danger to environmental health, and arsenic-rich groundwater is a key exposure risk for humans. The distribution, migration, and enrichment of arsenic in groundwater is an important environmental and public health problem. Currently, the Huaihe River Basin is identified as a region of arsenic-rich groundwater in China. This study aims to assess arsenic-rich groundwater potential pollution risk, analyze the hydrogeochemical processes, and trace the ion source based on an analysis of groundwater hydrogeochemical data. The results show that arsenic is the main inorganic chemical substances affecting the water quality in the study area, which presents a high exposure risk for public health. The arsenic concentration of groundwater was f 5.75 ± 5.42 μg/L, and 23% of the considered samples exceeded the drinking water standards of the World Health Organization. The groundwater in the study area underwent evaporation, halite dissolution, and ion exchange processes. The total alkalinity (HCO3−) of the arsenic-rich groundwater mainly ranged between 400–700 mg/L, and the chemical type was mainly of HCO3-Na. In an alkaline environment, the oxidative dissolution and reductive dissolution of arsenic bearing minerals might be the formation mechanism of arsenic-rich groundwater.

Abstract:Concentrations of dissolved arsenic in ground-water in alluvial basins of Arizona commonly exceed 50 μg L(-1) and reach values as large as 1,300 μg L(-1). Arsenic speciation analyses show that arsenic occurs in the fully oxidized state of plus 5 (As+5), most likely in the form of HAsO4(∼2), under existing oxidizing and pH conditions. Arsenic in source areas presumably is oxidized to soluble As before transport into the basin or, if after transport, before burial. Probable sources of arsenic are the sulphide and arsenide deposits in the mineralized areas of the mountains surrounding the basins. Arsenic content of alluvial material ranged from 2 to 88 ppm. Occurrence and removal of arsenic in ground-water are related to the pH and the redox condition of the ground-water, the oxidation state of arsenic, and sorption or exchange. Within basins, dissolved arsenic correlates (P<0.01) with dissolved molybdenum, selenium, vanadium, and fluoride and with pH, suggesting sorption of negative ions. The sorption hypothesis is further supported by enrichment of teachable arsenic in the basin-fill sediments by about tenfold relative to the crustal abundance and by as much as a thousandfold relative to concentrations found in ground-water. Silicate hydrolysis reactions, as defined within the alluvial basins, under closed conditions cause increases in pH basinward and would promote desorption. Within the region, large concentrations of arsenic are commonly associated with the central parts of basins whose chemistries evolve under closed conditions. Arsenic does not correlate with dissolved iron (r = 0.09) but may be partly controlled by iron in the solid phase. High solid-phase arsenic contents were found in red clay beds. Large concentrations of arsenic also were found in water associated with red clay beds. Basins that contain the larger concentrations are bounded primarily by basalt and andesite, suggesting that the iron content as well as the arsenic content of the basin fill may play a role in the occurrence of arsenic in ground-water. Under oxidizing conditions in Arizona, arsenic in ground-water appears to be controlled in part by sorption or desorption of HAsO4(∼2) on active ferric oxyhydroxide surfaces.

Abstract:<p>Groundwater contaminated with arsenic has been recognized as a global threat, which negatively impacts human health. Populations that rely on private wells for their drinking water are vulnerable to the potential arsenic-related health risks such as cancer and birth defects. Arsenic exposure through drinking water is among one of the primary arsenic exposure routes that can be effectively managed by active testing and water treatment. From the public and environmental health management perspective, it is critical to allocate the limited resources to establish an effective arsenic sampling and testing plan for health risk mitigation. We present a spatially adaptive sampling design approach based on an estimation of the spatially varying underlying contamination distribution. The method is different from traditional sampling design methods that often rely on a spatially constant or smoothly varying contamination distribution. In contrast, we propose a statistical regularization method to automatically detect spatial clusters of the underlying contamination risk from the currently available private well arsenic testing data in the USA, Iowa. This approach allows us to develop a sampling design method that is adaptive to the changes in the contamination risk across the identified clusters. We provide the spatially adaptive sample size calculation and sampling location determination at different acceptance precision and confidence levels for each cluster. The spatially adaptive sampling approach may effectively mitigate the arsenic risk from the resource management perspectives. The model presents a framework that can be widely used for other environmental contaminant monitoring and sampling for public and environmental health.</p>

Abstract:A version of the Donnan steric-partitioning pore model with dielectrical exclusion (DSPM-DE) has been used to get information on the pore size and charge density of a commercial membrane, NF45 from FilmTec, from its retention of KCl solutions. The conductivity inside the pores has been measured by impedance spectroscopy, and the electric potential drop during retention experiments has also been measured. These experimental data on conductivity and electric potential are analyzed, by using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes and the space charge model, to obtain the pore charge density of the membrane. These two methods give results in fair accordance which probes that the sometimes controversial method of DSPM-DE can give accurate results for the charge as well as for the mean pore size of a nanofiltration membrane. Some clues to improve the way this model can be used are given as well.
Long-Term Exposure to Arsenic in Community Water Supplies and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease among Women in the California Teachers Study

Abstract:Background: Inorganic arsenic in drinking water (wAs) is linked to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. However, risk is uncertain at lower levels present in US community water supplies (CWS), currently regulated at the federal maximum contaminant level of 10μg/L. Objectives: We evaluated the relationship between long-term wAs exposure from CWS and cardiovascular disease in the California Teachers Study cohort. Methods: Using statewide health care administrative records from enrollment through follow-up (1995-2018), we identified fatal and nonfatal cases of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Participants' residential addresses were linked to a network of CWS boundaries and annual wAs concentrations (1990-2020). Most participants resided in areas served by a CWS (92%). Exposure was calculated as a time-varying, 10-year moving average up to a participant's event, death, or end of follow-up. Using Cox models, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the risk of IHD or CVD. We evaluated wAs exposure categorized by concentration thresholds relevant to regulation standards (<1.00, 1.00-2.99, 3.00-4.99, 5.00-9.99, ≥10μg/L) and continuously using a log2-transformation (i.e., per doubling). Models were adjusted for baseline age, neighborhood socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), and smoking status. We also stratified analyses by age, BMI, and smoking status. Results: Our analysis included 98,250 participants, 6,119 IHD cases, and 9,936 CVD cases. The HRs for IHD at concentration thresholds (reference, <1μg/L) were 1.06 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.12), 1.05 (95% CI: 0.94, 1.17), 1.20 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.41), and 1.42 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.84) for 1.00-2.99μg/L, 3.00-4.99μg/L, 5.00-9.99μg/L, and ≥10μg/L, respectively. HRs for every doubling of wAs exposure were 1.04 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.06) for IHD and 1.02 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.04) for CVD. We observed statistically stronger risk among those ≤55 vs. >55 years of age at enrollment (pinteraction=0.006 and 0.012 for IHD and CVD, respectively). Machine learning prediction of health risk and spatial dependence of geogenic contaminated groundwater from the Hetao Basin, China

Abstract:Geogenic contaminated groundwater (GCG), characterized by elevated arsenic, fluoride, and iodine levels, present a significant challenge to public health and government management. Conventional survey-based approaches of collecting groundwater samples, conducting physicochemical tests, and performing spatial interpolation to obtain regional groundwater chemical component maps are inefficient and costly. More importantly, it does not take into account the actual hydrogeological conditions or the characteristics of pollutant transport and enrichment. To address this issue, we utilized Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) to analyze the likelihood of occurrence of arsenic, fluoride, and iodine as well as their spatial distribution in shallow groundwater from the Hetao Basin. Our study incorporated 20 indicators related to meteorology, soil physicochemical properties, and groundwater conditions, along with 1505 labeled samples consisting of groundwater arsenic, fluoride, and iodine concentrations and their corresponding coordinates. Subsequently, the study automatically analyzed the meteorological, soil physicochemical properties and groundwater conditions by constructing a machine learning model using the available data. In order to optimise and select the best prediction model, this paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the prediction performance of various machine learning models. The accuracy (AC), area under curve (AUC) and mean squared error (MSE) were calculated to predict the spatial distribution of CGC. Subsequently, the optimized model for predicting the spatial distribution of GCG was selected. The results showed that the XGBoost algorithm provided optimal predictions for groundwater with arsenic concentrations above 10 μg/L and fluoride concentrations exceeding 1.5 mg/L, whereas the RF model provided the best predictions for groundwater with arsenic concentrations surpassing 50 μg/L and iodine concentrations exceeding 100 μg/L. Subsequently, groundwater health risk zones were delineated based on an optimal prediction model, and demographic analysis was conducted in both the direct and potential groundwater risk zones. Model predictions indicated that hundreds of thousands of people in the Hetao Basin were facing a public health crisis caused by high concentrations of arsenic, fluoride and iodine in groundwater. These findings underscore the significant health challenge in the study area. Considering the agricultural development and increasing groundwater use in the area, our findings can guide local governments in managing the extent of groundwater development, establishing control zones, and enhancing protection measures for populations at risk from groundwater contamination.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known colloquially as "forever chemicals", have been associated with adverse human health effects and have contaminated drinking water supplies across the United States owing to their long-term and widespread use. People in the United States may unknowingly be drinking water that contains PFAS because of a lack of systematic analysis, particularly in domestic water supplies. We present an extreme gradient boosting model for predicting the occurrence of PFAS in groundwater at the depths of drinking water supply for the conterminous United States. Our model results indicate that 71 to 95 million people in the conterminous United States potentially rely on groundwater with detectable concentrations of PFAS for their drinking-water supplies prior to any treatment.
