Abstract:Personal financial planning is an emerging area of interest, given the complexities and risks involved in investments and financial markets. As an extension to studies in the field of cognitive and behavioural decision theories, the role of financial cognition (FC) and mental accounting (MA) is examined as antecedents to personal financial planning (PFP) of Indian households and established as a model to represent the same. The study considers factors, that is, financial attitude (FA), risk attitude (RA) and financial knowledge (FK), to measure FC and uses the components of mental budgeting (MB), current income (CI), current assets (CAs) and future income (FI) to study MA as per the behavioural life cycle hypothesis. The study used a structured questionnaire to explore PFP in all the areas of financial interest, that is, cash flow management (CM), investment (INV), insurance (INSU), retirement (RP), tax (TAX) and estate planning (EP). The salaried individuals from different sectors are considered as samples for the study. The data have been collected from all-India representative samples. The analysis has been done with 359 responses from Indian households. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) has been used to establish and validates the measurement model.

Past behaviour, financial literacy and investment decision-making process of individual investors

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to explore the importance of past behaviour and financial literacy in the investment decision-making of individual investors and examines the validity of the theory of planned behaviour in this context. Design/methodology/approach The study used a self-administered questionnaire and adopted the convenience sampling technique followed by a snowball sampling method for the survey to collect data from the individual investors covering the four distinct states of India. Collected data were analysed on AMOS 20.0 using two-step structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings Results indicated a significant effect of all the predictive variables. Past behaviour showed no significant direct impact on investor's intention; however, it had an indirect significant relationship while mediated by the attitude of investors. The multiple squared correlation (R2) showed that the final model could explain 36% of the variance in investors' intention towards stock investment which signified a successful implementation of the TPB model along with external variables added to it. Moreover, Indian investors were found to be highly influenced, primarily, by social pressure which could be curbed through financial literacy. Practical implications A significant importance of subjective norms was found on stock market participation which could be a strategic theme for the government and the policymakers to educate investors through their opinion leaders for increasing their participation. Moreover, by doing so investors could control their behaviour and take rational decisions. Originality/value This study extended the understandings of investor's decision-making behaviour using TPB by incorporating the two external variables viz., Financial literacy and past behaviour. The addition of past behaviour is perhaps the novelty of this article since such examination has not been conducted empirically especially in the case of developing countries like India.

Abstract:This research aimed to examine the effects of financial and digital literacy as a fundamental aspect that influence the decision in making digital investment which is mediated by perceived socio- economic status. Prior research of how socio-economic affects digital and financial literacy which influence investment decision making process has widely been discussed over the time. However, most studies were focused on 'objective' socio-economic status as a part of a measurable factor which affects literacy level. On the other hand, there is another key element that needs to be deepened further, that is 'perceived' socio- economic status. In addition, specific discussion on 'digital' investment decisions and how it is influenced by the perception of digital investors which correlated with digital and financial literacy factors are also still limited. The trend of digital investors has risen along with the growing financial technology market, especially for millennials. This study's results will contribute to policy makers, digital investors, and especially for digital investment companies to formulate go-to-market strategy. This research used a convenient sampling and gathered data through an online questionnaire survey from 116 individual investors. Multiple regression using SmartPLS version 4.0 was applied to analyze the data and test the research model. The results show that financial literacy and digital literacy positively affects digital investment decision throughout perceived socio-economic status as a mediator that also has a positive impact to digital investment decision.

Abstract:Purpose The significance of financial literacy (FL) in deciding how to allocate one's investment capital has recently attracted much attention from various market participants and stakeholders. The study examines how FL affects individual investors' investment decisions (ID) in emerging markets. Additionally, the study investigates the potential mediating effects of attitude (ATT) and overconfidence bias (OCB) on the association between FL and ID. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a structured questionnaire to collect data from 311 individual investors in India, using both convenience and snowball sampling methods. The collected data were analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and processed through SMART PLS 4.0 software to test the study's hypotheses. Findings FL alone may not greatly affect ID, but the study enhances understanding of investor behaviour by examining how ATT and OCB mediate the link between FL and ID. The findings imply that FL, combined with positive ATT and overconfidence, empowers individual investors with the knowledge and skills for appropriate decision-making. Practical implications This research would benefit financial institutions, financial experts, and individual investors in India since it enables them to evaluate the causes and biases affecting their IDs and manage their portfolios accordingly. Policymakers should develop appropriate FL programs for investors to make informed decisions to achieve financial well-being. Originality/value The paper is exceptional in its approach as it delves into the mediating function of ATT and OCB in the intricate association between FL and ID. This innovative approach sets it apart from other studies in the field, making it a unique contribution to literature. Abstract:The investing behavior of Chinese families is undergoing a dramatic transition in the context of the digital financial era, impacted by factors such as big data use, AI adoption, financial literacy, digital literacy, and risk aversion. Although prior research has offered useful insights into certain components, a thorough examination of their linked dynamics has been lacking. The purpose of this research was to look into how big data usage, AI adoption, financial literacy, digital literacy, and risk aversion influence investment behavior among Chinese households. Additionally, it aimed to learn more about how risk aversion and digital literacy function as mediators in these relationships. A questionnaire-based survey of 370 Chinese families was employed as part of the quantitative research methodology. The study employed AMOS to find the relationship between variables. The research found that big data usage, AI adoption, financial literacy, and digital literacy significantly and favorably influenced Chinese households' investment behavior. It was discovered that digital literacy mediated the linkages between the adoption of technology and investment decisions. Furthermore, risk aversion reduced the effects of financial literacy and big data usage on investment behavior. This study added to the body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive framework that incorporates several aspects impacting investment behavior. It shed insight into the complicated dynamics of technology uptake and literacy, as well as their impact on investment decisions. The study went beyond individual components to investigate their interactions, resulting in a more complex view of modern investment behavior. This study has broad-ranging effects that will help investors, financial institutions, governments, educators, and researchers. The focus on a particular setting and self-reported data are two important constraints that must be acknowledged. Future studies can investigate longitudinal dynamics and cross-cultural variances to further our understanding of investment behavior in the digital age.

Abstract:In the challenging and volatile financial markets, an investor must constantly modify his financial objectives, leading to a diversified investment portfolio. The capacity of each investor to make wise choices will dictate his or her financial destiny. Making financial decisions is a difficult process that is impacted by a wide range of social, psychological, and economic variables. Gender-specific perspectives on financial behaviors reveal distinct patterns, especially with regard to women. This study investigates the behavioral components of women's financial decision-making by looking at risk attitudes, social factors, psychological characteristics, and economic situations. This study examines the behavioral elements of financial decision-making from the viewpoint of women, looking at the particular difficulties, driving forces, and money-management techniques that women face. The study explores how women's financial behaviors are shaped by psychological variables, socioeconomic circumstances, and gender-specific prejudices. The intention is to comprehend the ways in which these variables affect women's financial wellbeing and to find strategies for assisting them in making wise financial decisions. Abstract:The paper investigates the psychological factors influencing investors' decision-making processes, with a particular focus on how biases affect risk tolerance and investment decisions. Utilizing a comprehensive methodology that includes ANOVA, regression, and correlational analysis, this study examines the effects of biases such as overconfidence, anchoring, herd behaviour, regret aversion and optimism biases on investment decisions. The research findings reveal significant correlations between these psychological biases and investor behaviour, highlighting their impact on risk assessment and decision-making strategies. To ensure the reliability of the research tools, a Cronbach’s Alpha test was conducted, confirming the consistency of the instruments used. The study's results challenge the traditional notion that states that investment decisions are driven solely by logical reasoning and underscoring the substantial influence of emotional and cognitive biases. These insights contribute to the field of behavioural finance by enhancing understanding of the psychological underpinnings in investment decision-making and suggesting practical applications for financial education and advisory services. The paper advocates for the inclusion of psychological bias recognition in investor education, proposing that such an approach can significantly improve decision-making and lead to better investment outcomes. The implications of this research extend beyond individual investors to financial advisors and policymakers, offering them a foundation to develop strategies and regulations that help mitigate bias-driven investment mistakes, ultimately fostering greater financial well-being and market efficiency. Abstract:The effective management of personal finances and investment decisions plays a pivotal role in achieving and maintaining financial stability. The present study investigates the many determinants that impact the decision-making process of individuals when it comes to investing decisions, as well as the subsequent financial results that ensue over an extended period. Through the use of a quantitative research methodology, this paper analyzed a representative sample of 1,000 individuals to examine their investing habits. This investigation took into account many factors like risk tolerance, financial literacy, and investment horizon. The results of our study demonstrate a significant association between financial literacy and investment performance, as individuals who obtained higher scores on financial literacy evaluations had superior investment returns over an extended period. Besides, it was observed that risk tolerance emerged as a noteworthy predictor of asset allocation methods, as people with a lower tolerance for risk tended to choose investment portfolios that were more cautious and less prone to volatility. The present research aims to enhance understanding of the influence of individual financial choices on the attainment of sustained financial stability. The findings of our study emphasize the significance of financial education programs and customized investing approaches for people to make well-informed choices that are in line with their financial objectives.
The psychological antecedents of personal financial management behavior: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose The intent of this study is to aggregate, in a measurable form, the results of previous studies on the association between personal financial management behavior (PFMB) and six psychological factors, which are financial attitude, financial self-efficacy, self-control, materialism, internal locus of control (LOC), and external LOC. Design/methodology/approach A stack of 32 research documents that investigated 52 relationships between various psychological variables and PFMB was analyzed using the meta-analysis technique. Along with the overall meta-analysis, a comprehensive subgroup analysis was also undertaken counseled to determine whether the results contrast on account of the age group of the sample and the economy of the country to which the sample belongs. Findings The overall meta-analysis findings do not support the association between PFMB and the various explanatory variables except for the significant positive association with self-control. In contrast, a subgroup study revealed that self-control (positively) and materialism (negatively) were found to be significantly associated with PFMB among adults. The association between internal LOC and PFMB is significant and positive among the young. Interestingly, self-control appeared to be significantly and positively associated with PFMB in developed countries. In developing countries, financial attitude, financial self-efficacy and internal LOC are significantly and positively associated with PFMB. Originality/value Distinct from other review papers, this meta-analysis quantitatively cumulates and reconciles the conflicting findings on the linkage between psychological predictors and PFMB. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis on the topic.

Abstract:The goal of this study is to investigate how digital financial literacy affects the financial management behavior of students who use digital banking services in Surabaya. Primary data were obtained from questionnaires distributed to students in Surabaya. Using the SmartPLS 4 program, the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was employed for data analysis in this study. The findings of this study indicate that students in Surabaya who utilize digital banking services have a substantial impact on their saving behavior when they are financially literate, digital financial literacy has a significant effect on the spending behavior of students who use digital bank services in Surabaya, digital financial literacy has a significant effect on investment behavior of students who use digital bank services in Surabaya. In short, this research can contribute to helping students in Surabaya to deepen their understanding of digital financial literacy.

Abstract:This qualitative study investigates the psychological determinants influencing risk preferences and investment decisions. Grounded in phenomenology and interpretivism, the research aims to explore subjective experiences related to financial behavior. Employing purposive sampling, participants were selected based on diverse criteria. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed intricate interplays between personal experiences, cognitive biases, emotions, social influences, and financial literacy, shaping individuals' risk perceptions and decision-making processes. Findings underscore the multifaceted nature of financial behavior, highlighting the significance of personality traits, cognitive styles, and decision-making biases. Risk-averse individuals prioritized capital preservation, while sensation seekers pursued high-risk, high-reward investments. Moreover, individuals' self-efficacy influenced their investment strategies. Cognitive biases, such as overconfidence and loss aversion, further impacted investment decisions. The study emphasizes the importance of considering psychological factors in designing personalized financial interventions and educational programs. Future research directions include longitudinal studies, cross-cultural comparisons, and interdisciplinary approaches integrating insights from psychology, economics, and finance. This research contributes to the advancement of knowledge in behavioral finance and informs practical implications for financial advisors and policymakers, aiming to enhance individuals' financial well-being and decision-making competence.

Abstract:Purpose The behavioural decision-making process of individuals highlights the importance of investors’ sentiment and their correlation with the real economy. This paper aims to contribute to the literature of behavioural finance by examining the influence of contextual factors on investment decision-making. Design/methodology/approach Using a questionnaire, a total of 445 valid responses were collected from March to May 2021 through online sources. The current study uses a technique of Fuzzy-analytical hierarchical process (AHP) to assign relative weights to various contextual factors influencing investment decision-making. Harman’s single factor test was used to check common method bias. Findings Results of the study reveal that accounting information, self-image/firm-image coincidence, and neutral information as the top-ranked factors in influencing investment decisions, whereas advocate recommendation and personal financial needs emerged as less important factors in influencing investment decisions. Research limitations/implications The current study collects data from Indian stock market investors, which may limit the generalization of the study to India only. Moreover, this study is cross-sectional in nature, and there are numerous factors that are not part of the study but might significantly influence the investors’ decision-making process. Practical implications The research has implications for both academicians working in the area of behavioural finance and practitioners’ who are active in stock markets, more specifically dealing with retail investors and in the domain of personal finance. Also, the current study will accommodate different groups, i.e. policy makers, financial advisors, investors, investment professionals, etc. in carrying out their professional work. Originality/value The current study will provide a comprehensive overview of individual investor behaviour. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present study is one of its kind to use the Fuzzy-AHP technique for evaluating the relative ranks of contextual factors influencing investment decision-making.

Abstract:Traditional finance is constructed on four principles which are portfolio principles of Markowitz, the arbitrage principles of Miller and Modigliani, the capital asset pricing model of Sharpe, Lintner and Black and the option-pricing model of Black, Scholes, and Merton, These principles conclude that the market is efficient and competent. Patrons of traditional finance recommend that individual behavior frequently reflect rationality. EMH of Samuelson also explains that people behave rationally, maximize their expected utility and process all available information. EMH states that stock prices reflect all the available information. It is impossible to “beat the market” consistently on a risk adjusted basis since market price should only react to available information. Proponents of traditional finance state that the market and investors who access the market are rational. But in reality investors cannot act rationally all time. They are frequently influenced by psychological factors like state of mind, emotions, trading theories, values and interpretation of information, which mislead them to act as irrational investors, (Kahneman and Tversky). Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky were known as the fathers of behavioural finance. Though, many literary works are carried out by them in behavioural finance. Proponent were advocate that investors behavior influence by psychological bias. From the above findings, it concludes that Most of the standard finance theories give more importance to fundamental factors instead of give importance to decision making process of individuals. Therefore, there is necessitating developing modern finance to study these irregularities. The main aim of this paper is to study how psychological factors influence the investment behavior of individuals through review of literature from secondary sources like Journals, Magazines, Books etc. The study also has tried to discover the relationship between the behavioral biases and the investment decisions of the individual investors of stock market. The result of the study will help investors to improve their decision making process through identifying the most important behavioural finance factor.

Findings reveal the pervasive impact of cognitive biases such as overconfidence and confirmation bias on investment behavior, leading to suboptimal decision-making outcomes. Emotional factors like fear of missing out (FOMO) drive speculative behavior among investors, contributing to market inefficiencies. Moreover, socio-cultural factors influence risk perception and decision-making norms, shaping investment strategies across different cultural contexts. The study underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing cognitive biases in investment practices to improve decision outcomes and enhance long-term financial well-being. Influence of Digital Financial Literacy on Investment Behaviour of Nepali Investors

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of digital financial literacy on individual investment behaviour of Nepali investors. In order to explore the influences of digital financial literacy on individual investment behaviour, causal-comparative research design was used and responses from 358 investors were collected through a survey questionnaire. The convenience sampling method ensured statistical reliability and diversity in perspectives. Questionnaires were distributed through various platforms, ensuring anonymity and confidentiality. Descriptive statistics, regression, reliability and correlation were some of the tools used for a thorough study of the data. These methods enabled non-parametric testing and multiple regressions by providing a quantitative comprehension of the variables. The research establishes that digital financial literacy significantly influences investment behaviour in Nepal. The statistical correlation matrix and regression analysis, with an R Square of 0.589, highlight the interconnectedness of digital financial proficiency, financial literacy, financial goal management and individual investment behaviour. Investment behaviour is significantly influenced by financial literacy, digital financial literacy and financial goal management, having the p-value less than 0.05. However, cyber security and awareness did not show a significant relationship with investment behaviour. Policymakers in Nepal are focusing on enhancing digital financial literacy to empower individuals and cultivate a financially literate society. Financial institutions and educators should leverage digital platforms to enhance financial education and prepare individuals for informed investment decisions in Nepal’s evolving stock market landscape. Examining the digital financial literacy of Nepali investors can help in making more informed decisions regarding investments by looking at structures, comparing findings with those from other developing nations and assessing the effects of educational efforts.

In the context of the escalating socio-economic disparities and environmental concerns, this study delves into the intricate interplay among financial literacy (FL), social self-efficacy (SSE) and intentions for socially responsible investment (SRI). Grounded firmly in the theory of planned behaviour, a survey of 235 Indian participants was conducted employing a meticulously structured questionnaire and leveraging Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling software for robust data analysis. The research addresses pivotal questions, examining the impact of FL on fostering positive SRI attitudes, appraising the influence of subjective norms (SNs) on the intentions of Indian investors regarding SRI, and exploring the mediating role of SSE between FL and SRI intentions. The findings underscore the substantive role of FL in shaping positive attitudes towards SRI, exerting a direct influence on SRI propensities. Concurrently, SNs exert a comparable impact on SRI intentions. Notably, the study unravels a dual mediation paradigm, elucidating the sequential mediation of SRI attitude and SSE. The study yields pragmatic implications for fund managers and policymakers. It accentuates the strategic imperative of effective communication of investment benefits, necessitating tailored approaches attuned to cognitive and psychosocial orientations. Abstract:Modern finance theory assumes that the stock market is efficient, and stock prices reflect all available information. However, behavioral finance theory argues that stock prices can be influenced by psychological and emotional factors. This study aims to examine the impact of behavioral finance factors on investment decisions in the Saudi equity markets through the mediating variable of risk perception. An online questionnaire was distributed to 150 individual investors, out of which 134 were returned and ready for analysis. The data is analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that herding, disposition effect, and blue chip bias have a significant positive impact on risk perception. Overconfidence has a significant positive effect only on investment decision making, but not on risk perception. Risk perception is found to be significantly positively related to investment decision making. All four behavioral finance factors have a significant positive indirect effect on investment decision making through risk perception. This study is conducted in a particular cultural context, namely Saudi Arabia, and may not be generalizable to other cultural contexts. Moreover, this study focused only on four behavioral finance factors, and there may be other factors that could impact risk perception and investment decision making. The results highlight the importance of considering an individual’s perception of risk when making investment decisions, as it can significantly impact their willingness to take risks and ultimately affect the performance of their investment portfolio. The results suggest the need for investors to consider their behavioral biases and for advisors and policymakers to develop strategies to mitigate their impact.

Abstract:The behavior of investors and their investment decision-making process in the financial markets are guided by psychological (sentiments) and personal characteristics (personality traits). Research in recent years has shown the connection between investor sentiment and personality traits and investment decisions. Though academic works in the field of behavioral finance are growing, studies on personality traits and investment decision-making with investor sentiment as a mediator are sparse. To this end, the paper aims to analyze the effects of Indian retail investors’ Big-five personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness) on their short-term and long-term investment decision-making with the mediating effect of investor sentiment. The study employs the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Model to test the framed hypotheses. The findings of the study reveal that Neuroticism has a significant positive effect (β=0.352, p&lt;0.05) on investor sentiment. It further shows that Extraversion has a significant positive effect (β=0.186, p&lt;0.05) on long-term decision-making. On the contrary, the consciousness trait has a significant negative effect (β=-0.335, p&lt;0.05) on short-term investment decision-making. Furthermore, the Openness trait demonstrates a significant effect on both short-term and long-term investment decision-making (β=0.357, p&lt;0.05; β=0.007, p&lt;0.05). However, the findings reveal no significant intervening effect of investor sentiment between personality traits and investment decision-making. Thus, the study strongly exerted the impact of investors’ personality traits on their investment decision-making due to the high influence of personal characteristics over sentiment effects.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to examine the influence of digital financial literacy (DFL) on the financial well-being (FWB) of students in Andhra Pradesh, specifically exploring the factors of impulsivity and self-control. Both DFL and FWB are treated as multi-dimensional constructs in the study. The research delves into the impact of DFL dimensions, viz. digital financial knowledge, digital financial experience and digital financial skills, on both impulsivity and self-control. Subsequently, the study assesses the effects of impulsivity and self-control on financial well-being. Design/methodology/approach To gather data, a questionnaire-based survey method was employed, reaching 475 university students through purposive sampling. The study utilizes confirmatory factor analysis for scale validation and structural equation modeling for hypothesis testing. Findings The results reveal a significantly negative influence of digital financial knowledge (DFK), digital financial experience (DFE) and digital financial skills (DFS) on impulsivity, while demonstrating a significantly positive impact on self-control. Additionally, the study finds that impulsivity negatively affects financial well-being, whereas self-control has a positive impact. Focusing on higher education institutions in Andhra Pradesh, the research highlights students' limited concern for long-term financial planning. Originality/value This study underscores the relevance of understanding the crucial role of digital financial literacy in enhancing their financial well-being. The implications of these research findings are substantial and can be utilized to shape educational programs for students in higher education institutions. Such programs can guide institutions in imparting knowledge and skills related to personal finance management, particularly in the context of the increasing digitalization of financial transactions.

Abstract:This research article aims to investigate the influence of financial social agents and attitudes toward money on financial literacy among retail investors in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) population. The research employs a quantitative research design, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to a sample of retail investors within the PSX population. The sample selection is carried out through a stratified random sampling technique to ensure representative diversity. The study's findings reveal that financial social agents, such as family, friends, and financial advisors, significantly influence financial literacy among retail investors in the PSX population. Positive attitudes toward money are also found to have a significant positive impact on financial literacy. Furthermore, financial self-efficacy is identified as a mediator between attitudes toward money and financial literacy. The study uncovers that mindfulness moderates the relationship between financial social agents and financial self-efficacy, as well as the relationship between attitudes toward money and financial self-efficacy. The mediating role of financial self-efficacy and the moderating role of mindfulness contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the factors driving financial literacy among retail investors.
