Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in food production. P consumption is increasing over the years due to increasing population and increasing demand for agricultural yields. Managing the agricultural P through the understanding of bioavailability, transport, and runoff will maximize the soil productivity and minimize the environmental effects. Efficient management in agriculture, governance, and lack of integrated international governance need to be addressed to overcome the P scarcity issue. Results and Discussions: This article is focusing one such efficient management of P resource addressing the major portion of phosphorus which is unnoticed in agricultural residues, manures, and other sources. Increasing cost of phosphate fertilizer, a scarcity of high-quality phosphate rock (PR), and increasing surface water pollution are driving a need to accelerate the recovery and reuse of phosphorus (P) from various waste sectors. Options to recover P occur all along the open P cycle from mining to households to oceans. However, P recovery as a regional and global strategy toward P sustainability and future food, bio energy, and water security are in its infancy because of a number of technological, socioeconomic, and institutional constraints. Resolving these constraints requires concerted collaboration between relevant stakeholders and an integrated approach combining successful business models with socioeconomic and institutional changes.

Abstract:Human intervention in the global phosphorus cycle has mobilised nearly half a billion tonnes of the element from phosphate rock into the hydrosphere over the past half century. The resultant water pollution concerns have been the main driver for sustainable phosphorus use (including phosphorus recovery). However the emerging global challenge of phosphorus scarcity with serious implications for future food security, means phosphorus will also need to be recovered for productive reuse as a fertilizer in food production to replace increasingly scarce and more expensive phosphate rock. Through an integrated and systems framework, this paper examines the full spectrum of sustainable phosphorus recovery and reuse options (from small-scale low-cost to large-scale high-tech), facilitates integrated decision-making and identifies future opportunities and challenges for achieving global phosphorus security. Case studies are provided rather than focusing on a specific technology or process. There is no single solution to achieving a phosphorus-secure future: in addition to increasing phosphorus use efficiency, phosphorus will need to be recovered and reused from all current waste streams throughout the food production and consumption system (from human and animal excreta to food and crop wastes). There is a need for new sustainable policies, partnerships and strategic frameworks to develop renewable phosphorus fertilizer systems for farmers. Further research is also required to determine the most sustainable means in a given context for recovering phosphorus from waste streams and converting the final products into effective fertilizers, accounting for life cycle costs, resource and energy consumption, availability, farmer accessibility and pollution.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is essential for growing crops, but the supply of high-quality phosphate rock reserves used for fertilizer production is finite while losses of P from the food/waste system cause considerable environmental damage. A variety of emerging approaches in biotechnology are reviewed that hold promise for improving the sustainability of P use in the food/water systems. These include improved sensors, cell culture approaches to meat production, bio-based P adsorption and transformation strategies, advancements in understanding of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms, and new approaches involving biomineralization and anaerobic treatment. By advancing these technologies to scale, progress can be made in developing a circular phosphorus economy that improves food security while protecting drinking water and aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural land to surface waters is well known as an environmental issue because of the role of P in freshwater eutrophication. Much research has been conducted on the erosion and loss of P in sediments and surface runoff. Recently, P loss in sub-surface runoff via agricultural drainage has been identified as environmentally significant. High soil P levels are considered as a potential source of P loss. However, without favourable hydrological conditions P will not move. In this paper, we review the basis of soil P release into solution and transport in surface and sub-surface runoff. Our objectives are to outline the role of soil P and hydrology in P movement and management practices that can minimize P loss to surface waters. Remedial strategies to reduce the risk of P loss in the short-term are discussed, although it is acknowledged that long-term solutions must focus on achieving a balance between P inputs in fertilizers and feed and P outputs in production systems.

Abstract:The amount of phosphorus (P) circulating in soil and water has been suddenly increased by human activities in less than 100 years, largely by mining of phosphate rock deposits to enrich soils via fertilization for crop production. How much of this "new" human‐added P has accumulated in the soil–water continuum, and where it is located, is a necessary challenge to solve in order to optimize trade‐offs bet agroecosystem productivity and water quality impairment. This article reviews knowns and unknowns to quantify the amount and distribution of residual P. A defining feature of the Anthropocene is the distortion of the biosphere phosphorus (P) cycle. A relatively sudden acceleration of input fluxes without a concomitant increase in output fluxes has led to net accumulation of P in the terrestrial‐aquatic continuum. Over the past century, P has been mined from geological deposits to produce crop fertilizers. When P inputs are not fully removed with harvest of crop biomass, the remaining P accumulates in soils. This residual P is a uniquely anthropogenic pool of P, and its management is critical for agronomic and environmental sustainability. Managing residual P first requires its quantification—but measuring residual P is challenging. In this review, we synthesize approaches to quantifying residual P, with emphasis on advantages, disadvantages, and complementarity. Common approaches to estimate residual P are mass balances, long‐term experiments, soil test P trends and chronosequences, with varying suitability or even limitations to distinct spatiotemporal scales. We demonstrate that individual quantification approaches are (i) constrained, (ii) often complementary, and (iii) may be feasible at only certain time–space scales. While some of these challenges are inherent to the quantification approach, in many cases there are surmountable challenges that can be addressed by unifying existing P pool and flux datasets, standardizing and synchronizing data collection on pools and fluxes, and quantifying uncertainty. Though defined as a magnitude, the distribution and speciation of residual P is relatively less understood but shapes its utilization and environmental impacts. The form of residual P will vary by agroecosystem context due to edaphoclimatic‐specific transformation of the accumulated P, which has implications for management (e.g., crop usage) and future policies (e.g., lag times in P loading from non‐point sources). Quantifying the uncertainty in measuring residual P holds value beyond scientific understanding, as it supports prioritization of monitoring and management resources and inform policy.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P), an essential nutrient for crop and animal production, can accelerate freshwater eutrophication, now one of the most ubiquitous forms of water quality impairment in the developed world. Repeated outbreaks of harmful algal blooms (e.g., Cyanobacteria and Pfiesteria) have increased society's awareness of eutrophication, and the need for solutions. Agriculture is regarded as an important source of P in the environment. Specifically, the concentration of specialized farming systems has led to a transfer of P from areas of grain production to animal production. This has created regional surpluses in P inputs (mineral fertilizer and feed) over outputs (crop and animal produce), built up soil P in excess of crop needs, and increased the loss of P from land to water. Recent research has shown that this loss of P in both surface runoff and subsurface flow originates primarily from small areas within watersheds during a few storms. These areas occur where high soil P, or P application in mineral fertilizer or manure, coincide with high runoff or erosion potential. We argue that the overall goal of efforts to reduce P loss to water should involve balancing P inputs and outputs at farm and watershed levels by optimizing animal feed rations and land application of P as mineral fertilizer and manure. Also, conservation practices should be targeted to relatively small but critical watershed areas for P export.

Abstract:The measurement, monitoring and evaluation of power quality have a great importance for avoiding grid- and device-based problems in the stages of generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of electrical energy. For this purpose, several standards have been set up in order to minimize the effects distorting the power quality of power systems in our country and in the world. In case of investigating these standards, it is mined that voltage dips and voltage imbalances are among the significant technical quality parameters for power systems. In this study, the voltage dips and voltage imbalances occurred in the phase-to-phase effective voltages of a medium-voltage transformer located in an organized industrial zone have been analyzed according to the standards. The number of higher voltage dips and the ratios of excessive voltage imbalances are uncovered and many reasonable assessments are made for them.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient essential for all living organisms. Regrettably, it is a finite resource since phosphate rock (PR) is the main material used for production of P fertilizers. Globally, the demand for quality PR is escalating due to many factors including increasing human population. Inevitably, the demand for PR will exceed its supply capacity. This condition will be very difficult to manage as living systems have no alternative for P. Moreover, P use efficiency is low; only 15–20% of applied P is used by crops and animals. Globally, the remaining P is shunted into various waste streams. These waste streams include large quantities of effluents rich in P from both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems and manure from livestock production. The P present in these waste streams poses a threat to the environment by nutrient enrichment resulting in serious ecological issues such as eutrophication of waterways. However, P in these waste streams, if economically recovered, can contribute to a sustainable management of P resources. This review covers the following aspects: global importance of P as an essential nutrient; efficient and sustainable utilization of P; waste stream production, their suitability for P recovery, and limitations; current and emerging technologies for recovery of P; and the use of recovered P material. Finally, future research needs are identified associated with P recovery from waste streams and reuse in agriculture.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is the determinant factor of eutrophication and a critical element for human life. In order to close the P loop from human perspective, researchers have developed enormous technologies for P removal and recovery, among which the nano-enabled technologies are the most promising candidates. Despite the efforts, P pollution still persist worldwide, which call for reflections on recent studies of relevance, as well as the coming challenges and opportunities in the near future. This review attempts to provide a scenario based overview (i.e. P advanced treatment, P recovery, and P immobilization) on current trends in the field, highlighting the cutting-edge developments and discoveries (e.g. adsorption) that best fit the purpose of each scenario by seven metrics. This review summarizes the potential merits and impacts of nanotechnology (e.g. size effect, nanoconfinement effect) on the given applications, and finally envisions the paths for future research and practical application.

Abstract:The buffering of phosphorus (P) in the landscape delays management outcomes for water quality. If stored in labile form (readily exchangeable and bioavailable), P may readily pollute waters. We studied labile P and its intensity for >600 soils and sediments across seven study locations in the United States. Stocks of labile P were large enough to sustain high P losses for decades, indicating the transport‐limited regime typical of legacy P. Sediments were commonly more P‐sorptive than nearby soils. Soils in the top 5 cm had 1.3–3.0 times more labile P than soils at 5–15 cm. Stratification in soil test P and total P was, however, less consistent. As P exchange via sorption processes follows the difference in intensities between soil/sediment surface and solution, we built a model for the equilibrium phosphate concentration at net zero sorption (EPC0) as a function of labile P (quantity) and buffer capacity. Despite widely varying properties across sites, the model generalized well for all soils and sediments: EPC0 increased sharply with more labile P and to greater degree when buffer capacity was low or sorption sites were likely more saturated. This quantity–intensity–capacity relationship is central to the P transport models we rely on today. Our data inform the improvement of such P models, which will be necessary to predict the impacts of legacy P. Further, this work reaffirms the position of labile P as a key focus for environmental P management—a view Dr. Sharpley developed in the 1980s with fewer data and resources.

Abstract:<p>Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth, as well as a critical element involved with biological metabolism. Current phosphorus utilization efficiencies in most counties are below 20%, which results in significant phosphorus loss and brings severe environmental challenges. Therefore, phosphorus flow management and recovery technologies are of great importance for global sustainable development. However, there is little research available to link up phosphorus flow management and recovery technology development. This paper proposed a systematic, hierarchical framework based on fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) to identify cost-effective waste streams and suitable technologies for efficient phosphorus recovery, while China is used as a case study to demonstrate its effectiveness. Within this framework, substance flow analysis (SFA) is used to track phosphorus flows in China, and different indicators covering phosphorus quantity, process economics, product safety and their environmental impacts were considered. By using FCE, these indicators were combined into a single score for decision making. Principal component analysis (PCA) was further incorporated to identify barriers and directions for future research and development. Although the data collection was still a challenge, the preliminary insights demonstrated that phosphorus recovery from livestock urine in China is the most cost-effective solution. The framework not only supports decision-makers to formulate national and international phosphorus policies and thus improve global sustainability, but also could be applied to other resources management such as nitrogen and rare earth elements in the future.</p>

Abstract:The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to agricultural soils increased by 3.2 % annually from 2002 to 2010. We quantified in detail the P inputs and outputs of cropland and pasture and the P fluxes through human and livestock consumers of agricultural products on global, regional, and national scales from 2002 to 2010. Globally, half of the total P inputs into agricultural systems accumulated in agricultural soils during this period, with the rest lost to bodies of water through complex flows. Global P accumulation in agricultural soil increased from 2002 to 2010 despite decreases in 2008 and 2009, and the P accumulation occurred primarily in cropland. Despite the global increase in soil P, 32 % of the world's cropland and 43 % of the pasture had soil P deficits. Increasing soil P deficits were found for African cropland vs. increasing P accumulation in eastern Asia. European and North American pasture had a soil P deficit because the continuous removal of biomass P by grazing exceeded P inputs. International trade played a significant role in P redistribution among countries through the flows of P in fertilizer and food among countries. Based on country-scale budgets and trends we propose policy options to potentially mitigate regional P imbalances in agricultural soils, particularly by optimizing the use of phosphate fertilizer and the recycling of waste P. The trend of the increasing consumption of livestock products will require more P inputs to the agricultural system, implying a low P-use efficiency and aggravating P-stock scarcity in the future. Abstract:Phosphorus (P) loss to surface freshwater is a key driver of environmental degradation, including blooms of both harmful (e.g., microcystis) and nuisance (e.g., cladophora) algae, along with the development of hypoxic zones that could significantly impact fish habitat. Mitigating P losses from agricultural land will require a detailed understanding of the forms (particulate versus dissolved, and chemical speciation), sources (soil erosion, desorption of soil P, dissolved P from fertilizer or manure application, or release from frozen vegetation) and transport pathways (surface runoff, or subsurface runoff through tile drains). This paper describes each of these components in detail, and discusses how this can guide the adoption of appropriate beneficial management practices to effectively reduce P losses. Further, it describes how this component structure has been incorporated into the Canadian national Indicator of Risk of Water Contamination by Phosphorus (IROWC-P) as an example of a risk assessment tool.

Abstract:Soil testing has been an accepted agricultural management practice for decades. Interpretations and fertility recommendations based on soil analyses and the information obtained with soil samples on cropping systems, tillage practices, soil types, manure use, and other parameters have contributed to the increased efficiency of agricultural production. Recently, however, analyses of long‐term trends in soil test P values have shown that soil P in many areas of the world is now excessive, relative to crop P requirements. The role of P in the eutrophication of surface waters and emerging concerns about the human health impacts of toxic algal/dinoflagellate blooms have heightened public awareness of nonpoint source pollution by agricultural P. The greatest concerns are with animal‐based agriculture, where farm and watershed‐scale P surpluses and over‐application of P to soils are common. The need for nutrient‐management plans based on N and P is now an issue of intense debate in the U.S. and Canada. This paper addresses three issues: Should the applications of organic wastes and fertilizers be based on soil P and, if so, what is the most appropriate testing method to assess environmental risk? How can our knowledge of soil P chemistry be integrated with the expertise of hydrologists, agronomists, aquatic ecologists, and others to assess the risks that P in agricultural soils poses to surface waters? And, finally, how can we use soil P testing to evaluate new best management practices (BMPs) now being developed to reduce P transport from soil to water?

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a critical, geographically concentrated, nonrenewable resource necessary to support global food production. In excess (e.g., due to runoff or wastewater discharges), P is also a primary cause of eutrophication. To reconcile the simultaneous shortage and overabundance of P, lost P flows must be recovered and reused, alongside improvements in P-use efficiency. While this motivation is increasingly being recognized, little P recovery is practiced today, as recovered P generally cannot compete with the relatively low cost of mined P. Therefore, P is often captured to prevent its release into the environment without beneficial recovery and reuse. However, additional incentives for P recovery emerge when accounting for the total value of P recovery. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the range of benefits of recovering P from waste streams, i.e., the total value of recovering P. This approach accounts for P products, as well as other assets that are associated with P and can be recovered in parallel, such as energy, nitrogen, metals and minerals, and water. Additionally, P recovery provides valuable services to society and the environment by protecting and improving environmental quality, enhancing efficiency of waste treatment facilities, and improving food security and social equity. The needs to make P recovery a reality are also discussed, including business models, bottlenecks, and policy and education strategies.

Abstract:Increased industrial and agricultural activity has affected the availability of phosphorus (P) in nature and has caused a significant imbalance in the P cycle with long-term consequences on ecosystem health and sustainability. While P is an essential element for food production as well as plant and animal nutrition, it is also a limited nonrenewable resource whose availability is expected to decrease in the next century. Widespread application of P-based fertilizers and their excessive accumulation in water bodies leads to eutrophication which is associated with overgrowth of harmful algal blooms and degradation of water quality. This paper provides an overview of contemporary challenges and methodologies for improving P use efficiency and sustainability in the environment. Technologies and processes for the removal of P-containing compounds from water through the use of functional nanomaterial sorbents with tailored surface properties for capture, removal, and recycling are described. Various classes of materials including carbon-based, zeolites, mesoporous silica, metal organic frameworks, metal oxides and hydroxides, biomass-derived materials, and P-binding receptors are reviewed along with their properties, binding affinity, and adsorption capacity. The potential of these materials to control the amount of P in the environment and create decision support tools for water resource management is also discussed, with examples of applications.

Plants, which serve as the foundation of ecosystems, require green, low-cost, and effective technologies to sustain their growth in stressful environments. A total of 286 keywords and 10 clusters from the bibliometric analysis of 529 articles (1999–2023) indicate the increasing importance of research on microbial functionality in landscape ecosystems. Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) also improve plant disease resistance, adaptability, and survival. PSMs are widely used to promote plant growth and improve ecological quality. They can increase the availability of phosphorus in the soil and reduce the dependence of plants on chemical fertilizers. Microorganisms regulate phosphorus as key tools in landscape ecosystems. Most importantly, in urban and rural landscape practices, PSMs can be applied to green spaces, residential landscapes, road greening, and nursery planting, which play significant roles in improving vegetation coverage, enhancing plant resistance, improving environmental quality, and mitigating the heat island effect. PSMs are also helpful in restoring the ecological environment and biodiversity of polluted areas, such as brownfields, to provide residents with a more liveable living environment. Therefore, the multiple efficacies of PSM are expected to play increasingly important roles in the construction of urban and rural landscape ecosystems.

Abstract:Combined phosphorus (P) removal and recovery from wastewater is a sensible and sustainable choice in view of potential future P-resource scarcity, due to dwindling primary global reserves. P-recovery from wastewater, notwithstanding the relatively small fraction of total global amounts involved (less than 1/5 of total global use ends up in wastewater) could extend the lifespan of available reserves and improve wastewater cycle sustainability. The recovery of the resource, rather than its mere removal as ferric or aluminum salt, will still allow to achieve protection of receiving waters quality, while saving on P-sludge disposal costs. To demonstrate the possibility of such a recovery, a strategy combining enhanced biological phosphorus removal and mineral P-precipitation was studied, by considering possible process modifications of a large treatment facility. Process simulation, a pilot study, and precipitation tests were conducted. The results demonstrated that it would be possible to convert this facility from chemical -precipitation to its biological removal followed by mineral precipitation, with minimal structural intervention. Considerable P-recovery could be obtained, either in form of struvite or, more sustainably, as calcium phosphate, a mineral that also has possible fertilizing applications. The latter would present a cost about one order of magnitude lower than the former.
