Abstract:The change in the local climate is attributed primarily to rapid urbanization, and this change has a strong influence on the adjacent areas. Lahore is one of the fast-growing metropolises in Pakistan, representing a swiftly urbanizing cluster. Anthropogenic materials sweep the usual land surfaces owing to the rapid urbanization, which adversely influences the environment causing the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) effect. For the analysis of the SUHI effect, the parameter of utmost importance is the Land Surface Temperature (LST). The current research aimed to develop a model to forecast the LST to evaluate the SUHI effect on the surface of the Lahore district. For LST prediction, remote sensing data from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and the Reflection Radiometer Global Digital Elevation Model and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer sensor are exploited. Different parameters are used to develop the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. In the present investigation, for the prediction of LST, the input parameters to the model included 10 years of LST data (2009 to 2019) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), road density, and elevation. Data for the year 2020 are used to validate the outcomes of the LSTM model. An assessment of the measured and model-forecasted LST specified that the extent of mean absolute error is 0.27 K for both periods. In contrast, the mean absolute percentage error fluctuated from 0.12 to 0.14%. The functioning of the model is also assessed through the number of pixels of the research area, classified based on the error in the forecasting of LST. The LSTM model is contrasted with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to evaluate the skill score factor of the LSTM model in relation to the ANN model. The skill scores computed for both periods expressed absolute values, which distinctly illustrated the efficiency of the LSTM model for better LST prediction compared to the ANN model. Thus, the LST prediction for evaluating the SUHI effect by the LSTM model is practically acceptable.

Abstract:The soft computing models used for predicting land surface temperature (LST) changes are very useful to evaluate and forecast the rapidly changing climate of the world. In this study, four soft computing techniques, namely, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), wavelet neural network (WNN), adaptive neurofuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and dynamic evolving neurofuzzy inference system (DENFIS), are applied and compared to find the best model that can be used to predict the LST changes of Beijing area. The topographic change is considered in this study to accurately predict LST; furthermore, Landsat 4/5 TM and Landsat 8OLI_TIRS images for four years (1995, 2004, 2010, and 2015) are used to study the LST changes of the research area. The four models are assessed using statistical analysis, coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) in the training and testing stages, and MARS is used to estimate the important variables that should be considered in the design models. The results show that the LST for the studied area increases by 0.28°C/year due to the urban changes in the study area. In addition, the topographic changes and previously recorded temperature changes have a significant influence on the LST prediction of the study area. Moreover, the results of the models show that the MARS, ANFIS, and DENFIS models can be used to predict the LST of the study area. The ANFIS model showed the highest performances in the training ( R 2 = 0.99, RMSE = 0.78°C, MAE = 0.55°C) and testing ( R 2 = 0.99, RMSE = 0.36°C, MAE = 0.16°C) stages; therefore, the ANFIS model can be used to predict the LST changes in the Beijing area. The predicted LST shows that the change in climate and urban area will affect the LST changes of the Beijing area in the future.

Abstract:Information about land surface temperature (LST) plays a crucial role in environmental studies, as it provides essential data for understanding climate patterns, assessing ecosystem health, and predicting environmental changes. Understanding the relationship between land cover types and LST is crucial across all disciplines that deal with LST data. It helps researchers identify trends in global warming, heatwaves, and cooling effects, which can influence biodiversity, agriculture, and water resources. The accuracy of LST calculations heavily depends on the quality of the data used. However, most satellite thermal data used for LST estimations are in coarse spatial resolution. This study aims to explore the complex interaction between land cover types, considering factors such as proportion and neighboring effects, and LST recalculation by integrating the estimated LST from Landsat thermal band and Spot imagery classification. A machine learning model was employed to quantify the contribution of each Spot pixel to the LST estimated from TIRS data, classifying it as either heating or cooling. The Al Morjan and Al Hamra districts in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were used as case studies. The results showed that Spot images achieved a classification accuracy of over 95%, whereas Landsat images did not exceed 77%. The average heating and cooling factors from neighboring pixels were 1.06 and 0.96, respectively. The study demonstrates the improved spatial distribution of LST, with overall temperature increases across all land cover classes. The findings of this study could aid in identifying environmental imbalances and developing effective solutions.

Abstract:Urban areas worldwide are experiencing escalating temperatures due to the combined effects of climate change and urbanization, leading to a phenomenon known as urban overheating. Understanding the spatial distribution of land surface temperature (LST) and its driving factors is crucial for mitigation and adaptation of urban overheating. So far, there has been an absence of investigations into spatiotemporal patterns and explanatory factors of LST in the city of Addis Ababa. The study aims to determine the spatial patterns of land surface temperature, analyze how the relationships between LST and its factors vary across space, and compare the effectiveness of using ordinary least squares and geographically weighted regression to model these connections. The findings showed that the spatial patterns of LST show statistically significant hot spot zones in the north-central parts of the study area (Moran's I = 0.172). Abstract:The urban thermal environment is closely related to landscape patterns and land surface characteristics. Several studies have investigated the relationship between land surface characteristics and land surface temperature (LST). To explore the effects of the urban landscape on urban thermal environments, multiple land-use/land-cover (LULC) remote sensing-based indices have emerged. However, the function of the indices in better explaining LST in the heterogeneous urban landscape has not been fully addressed. This study aims to investigate the effect of remote-sensing-based LULC indices on LST, and to quantify the impact magnitude of green spaces on LST in the city built-up blocks. We used a random forest classifier algorithm to map LULC from the Gaofen 2 (GF-2) satellite and retrieved LST from Landsat-8 ETM data through the split-window algorithm. The pixel values of the LULC types and indices were extracted using the line transect approach. The multicollinearity effect was excluded before regression analysis. The vegetation index was found to have a strong negative relationship with LST, but a positive relationship with built-up indices was found in univariate analysis. The preferred indices, such as normalized difference impervious index (NDISI), dry built-up index (DBI), and bare soil index (BSI), predicted the LST (R2 = 0.41) in the multivariate analysis. The stepwise regression analysis adequately explained the LST (R2 = 0.44) due to the combined effect of the indices. The study results indicated that the LULC indices can be used to explain the LST of LULC types and provides useful information for urban managers and planners for the design of smart green cities.

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between landscape compositions and land surface temperature (LST) is important for mitigating urban heat island effect. Existing studies have investigated the impacts of land-cover types on LST, while the effects of LST autocorrelation are overlooked. This study used spatial regression model to distinguish the contributions of land-cover types on LST from that of LST autocorrelation. Its objectives are as follows: (1) to build quantitative relationships between LST and land-cover types at multiple resolutions and (2) to find suitable resolutions for measuring the relationships. LST is retrieved from a Landsat ETM+ image, and land-cover information is extracted from a Quickbird image. Two spatial regression models, spatial lag and spatial error models, are used to quantify the relationships at 18 resolutions ranging from 60 m to 1080 m, at 60 m intervals. Results of this study indicate that the resolutions of 660 m and 720 m are most suitable for measuring the relationships between landscape compositions and LST. At these resolutions, all the five coefficients of dependent variables characterizing landscape compositions attain the maximum value, while the coefficient of the autocorrelation of LST is reduced to minimum. At resolutions finer than 660 m, the autocorrelation of LST affects LST more significantly than land-cover types. At resolutions coarser than 720 m, most coefficients are insignificant. This study also measures the impacts of major land-cover types on LST. These findings provided valuable insights into how thermal environmental impacts of urbanization can be mitigated through local-level planning and zoning approaches. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:As urban expansion continues, the intensifying land surface temperature (LST) underscores the critical need for accurate predictions of future thermal environments. However, no study has investigated which method can most effectively and consistently predict the future LST. To address these gaps, our study employed four methods—the multiple linear regression (MLR), geographically weighted regression (GWR), random forest (RF), and artificial neural network (ANN) approach—to establish relationships between land use/cover and LST. Subsequently, we utilized these relationships established in 2006 to predict the LST for the years 2012 and 2018, validating these predictions against the observed data. Our results indicate that, in terms of fitting performance (R2 and RMSE), the methods rank as follows: RF > GWR > ANN > MLR. However, in terms of temporal stability, we observed a significant variation in predictive accuracy, with MLR > GWR > RF > ANN for the years 2012 and 2018. The predictions using MLR indicate that the future LST in 2050, under the SSP2 and SSP5 scenarios, is expected to increase by 1.8 ± 1.4 K and 2.1 ± 1.6 K, respectively, compared to 2018. This study emphasizes the importance of the MLR method in predicting the future LST and provides potential instructions for future heat mitigation.

Abstract:The insinuations of the ailments associated with the unrestrained and disorganized proliferation of artificial impervious materials over natural surfaces are prevalent among city dwellers. These impacts can be comprehended by estimating land surface temperature (LST), as it is vital for evaluating urban climate, particularly to explain the intensity of urban heat islands and to define the health and welfare of the planet as well as the living beings. Urbanization-driven landscape changes severely disrupt comfortable living in almost every city, necessitating monitoring and modelling historical, current, and likely future LSTs. This research article proposes two forecasting techniques: Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. These models have been widely accepted for the efficient prediction of climatic parameters, including LST, over an urban area. The landscape, elevation, and LST trend served as input to the models for an accurate prediction of LST. The analysis was performed over the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) with an additional 10 km buffer to understand urban growth and its effect on the LST of the entire region. The two developed models (MLR and ANN) effectively anticipated the LST over the KMA region. A continual increment in the surface temperatures ranging from 1 °C to 4 °C, over existing and likely-predicted urban areas was comprehended. It was anticipated that the regions near the urban areas will also experience severe discomfort and heat waves without proper mitigation measures. This scientific literature provides essential insights for decision-makers, stakeholders, and government officials to articulate new policies and modify the existing ones to create a sustainable and livable urban environment for the inhabitants.

Abstract:Context Revealing the interaction between landscape pattern and urban land surface temperature (LST) can provide insight into mitigating thermal environmental risks. However, there is no consensus about the key landscape indicators influencing LST. Objectives This study sought to identify the key landscape indicators influencing LST considering a large number of landscape pattern variables and multiple scales. Methods This study applied ordinary least squares regression and partial least squares regression to explore a combination of landscape metrics and identify the key indicators influencing LST. A total of 49 Landsat images of the main city of Shenzhen, China were examined at 13 spatial scales. Results The landscape composition indicators derived from biophysical proportion, a new metric developed in this study, more effectively determined LST variation than those derived from land cover proportion. Area-related landscape configuration indicators independently characterized LST variation, but did not give much more new information beyond that given by land cover proportion. Shape-related landscape configuration indicators were effective in combination with land cover proportion, but their importance was uncertain when temporal and spatial scales varied. Conclusions The influence of landscape configuration on LST exists but should not be overestimated. Comparison of numerous variables at multiple spatiotemporal scales can help identify the influence of multiple landscape characteristics on LST variation.
Spatio-temporal assessment of land use land cover based on trajectories and cellular automata Markov modelling and its impact on land surface temperature of Lahore district Pakistan

Abstract:This research aims to assess the urban growth and impact on land surface temperature (LST) of Lahore, the second biggest city in Pakistan. In this research, various geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques (maximum likelihood classification (MLC)) LST, and different normalized satellite indices have been implemented to analyse the spatio-temporal trends of Lahore city; by using Landsat for 1990, 2004, and 2018. The development of integrated use of RS and GIS and combined cellular automata-Markov models has provided new means of assessing changes in land use and land cover and has enabled the projection of trajectories into the future. Results indicate that the built-up area and bare area increased from 15,541 (27%) to 23,024 km2 (40%) and 5756 km2 (10%) to 13,814 km2 (24%). Meanwhile, water area and vegetation were decreased from 2302 km2 (4%) to 1151 km2 (2%) and 33,961 km2 (59%) to 19,571 km2 (34%) respectively. Under this urbanization, the LST of the city was also got affected. In 1990, the mean LST of most of the area was between 14 and 28 ℃, which rose to 22-28 ℃ in 2004 and 34 to 36 ℃ in 2018. Because of the shift of vegetation and built-up land, the surface reflectance and roughness of each land use land cover (LULC) class are different. The analysis established a direct correlation between Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with LST and an indirect correlation among Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), and Built-up Index (BI) with LST. The results are important for the planning and development department since they may be used to guarantee the sustainable utilization of land resources for future urbanization expansion projects.

Abstract:Abstract In modern days, a sustainable urban planning system requires a balance of vegetation, water, and settlement. The proportions of these surface features directly influence the land surface temperature (LST) in an urban area. LST primarily depends on the emittance of land use/land cover (LULC) categories. In an urban area, changes in LULC categories as well as local warming are the prime regulators of LST change. The study analyses the LULC change and its impact on LST in Imphal City, India. Landsat satellite data for the summer season and winter seasons for 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021 have been used in this study. Results show that the mean LST of the study area increased at >1% rate/decade. The green area and water area decreased the LST values whereas the built-up area and fallow lands increased the LST values. The study indicates the consequences of proper land conversion to regulate the LST change. Moreover, the influence of population on LST is also determined. The continuous rising trend of population is a positive factor of increasing LST. The study may help the town and country planners to generate sustainable urban land.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter in global climate change and urban thermalenvironmental studies. The significance of land surface temperature is being acknowledged gradually and interest isincreasing in developing methodologies for the retrieval of LST from Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) data. ThermalInfrared Sensor (TIRS) of Landsat-8 is the newest TIR sensor for the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM),offering two adjacent thermal infrared bands (10, 11), having significant beneficiary for the land surface temperatureinversion. The spectral radiance can be estimated through TIR bands 10 and 11 of Landsat-8 OLI_TIRS satellite image.In the present study, the radiative transfer equation-based method has been employed in estimating LST of Lahore andthe analysis demonstrated that estimated LST has the highest accuracy from the radiative transfer method through band10. Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) was derived with the aid of the NDVI’s threshold technique. The present studyresults show that as the built-up area increases and vegetation cover decreases in urban surface, they are linked toincrease in urban land surface temperature and conversely larger vegetation cover associated with lower urbantemperature. The output exposed that LST was high in built-up and barren land, whereas it was low in the area wherethere were more vegetation cover and water.

Abstract:Urban Heat Islands (UHIs), Land Surface Temperature (LST), and Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes are critical environmental concerns that require continuous monitoring and assessment, especially in cities within arid and semi-arid (ASA) climates. Despite the abundance of research in tropical, Mediterranean, and cold climates, there is a significant knowledge gap for cities in the Middle East with ASA climates. This study aimed to examine the effects of LULC change, population, and wind speed on LST in the Mashhad Metropolis, a city with an ASA climate, over a 30-year period. The research underscores the importance of environmental monitoring and assessment in understanding and mitigating the impacts of urbanization and climate change. Our research combines spatial regression models, multi-scale and fine-scale analyses, seasonal and city outskirts considerations, and long-term change assessments. We used Landsat satellite imagery, a crucial tool for environmental monitoring, to identify LULC changes and their impact on LST at three scales. The relationships were analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Spatial Error Model (SEM) regressions, demonstrating the value of these techniques in environmental assessment. Our findings highlight the role of environmental factors in shaping LST. A decrease in vegetation and instability of water bodies significantly increased LST over the study period. Bare lands and rocky terrains had the most substantial effect on LST. At the same time, built-up areas resulted in Urban Cooling Islands (UCIs) due to their lower temperatures compared to surrounding bare lands. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Dry Bare-Soil Index (DBSI) were the most effective indices impacting LST in ASA regions, and the 30×30 m 2 micro-scale provides more precise results in regression models, underscoring their importance in environmental monitoring. Our study provided a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between LULC changes and LST in an ASA environment, contributing significantly to the literature on environmental change in arid regions and the methodologies for monitoring such changes. Future research should aim to validate and expand additional LST-affecting factors and test our approach and findings in other ASA regions, considering the unique characteristics of these areas and the importance of tailored environmental monitoring and assessment approaches.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) acts as an important factor in the control of physical, chemical and biological metabolism of earth. Knowledge of the LST is necessary for many environmental studies and management activities of the Earth’s resources (Li and Becker 1993). A Land surface temperature study plays a significant role in environmental management studies and identifying the changes in the climate of the environment which we thrive. This study envisages on the fluctuation in temperature of a city which has undergone lightning paced impetus towards concentrated developmental activities and industrialization resulting in unprecedented urbanization for the last few years. This rapid urbanization has lead to a phenomenon termed urban heat island (UhI) Urbanization, not only leads to degradation of environment quality but it also effect ecosystem health (Douglas,1983; UN, 2001; Peterson et al., 1999). Land surface temperature can be estimated using different satellite data. In this study the 8 day 1 km MOD11A1 MODIS data (day and night) from the year 2000-2010 was tabulated to generate the temperature variation of the study area. MODIS is an EOS instrument that serves as the keystone (Salomonson et al. 1989) for global studies of atmosphere (King et al. 1992), land (Running et al. 1994) and ocean processes. It scansi55u from the nadir in 36 bands, withbands 1–19 and band 26 in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) range, and the remaining bands in the TIR from 3 to 15 mm. The specifications of MODIS bands have been published. (Wan and Li 1997). The bands in transparent atmospheric windows are designed for the remote sensing of surface properties. Other bands are mainly for atmospheric studies. MODIS provides images of daylight reflection and day/night emission of the Earth.

Abstract:Increasing of global average surface temperature naturally leading to major problems as global warming, which has typically attracted the interest of multinational organizations, civil society groups and scientists in the world. The main aim of this research is to properly investigate the impact of urban development via land-use dynamics on the future micro-climate of Beijing by predicting land surface temperature (LST) distribution and simulating land-use dynamics. Land use/land cover (LULC) and LST were traditionally produced using multispectral and thermal bands. Land use dynamics were calculated using a statistical model. LST of each LULC was mapped to assess temporal changes of LST responding to LULC changes in the study area for 20 years over three periods (1997–2005, 2005–2017 and 1997–2017). Prediction of LST was employed using single and multiple linear regression models until 2027. The results show that the average LST increased from 22.06 to 35.85 °C, from 20.98 to 37.04 °C, and from 17.00 to 38.29 °C in 1997, 2005 and 2017, respectively. This can be explained by the population growth and change in LULC. In addition, the comprehensive index of land use degree showed significant changes in land use of the area caused by several human activities. The annual rate of the urban area showed a remarkable increase as a direct result of urban sprawl. Urbanization may impact negatively on vegetation, causing it to decrease progressively to 2017. Furthermore, the results of the prediction models show that the Urban Index and Modification of Normalized Difference Water Index are highly influential to the forecasting of LST. The study has also demonstrated that remote sensing and GIS techniques are useful tools for assessing spatial and temporal changes in LULC dynamic and its impacts on LST.

Abstract:Accurate retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) over urban areas is of great significance for urban thermal environment monitoring. In previous studies, most of the urban LST retrieval methods were developed based on the assumption of a flat surface without considering the influence of urban 3-D geometry structure, which has a significant impact on the retrieval accuracy of LST over urban areas. In this study, a radiative transfer equation (RTE)-based single-channel method was developed to retrieve LST with urban geometry effect correction from the Landsat 8 thermal infrared (TIR) data in band 10. The increase in adjacent radiance from the surrounding pixels and the decrease in atmospheric downwelling radiance caused by urban geometry structure were taken into account in this method. Because it is difficult to directly validate the retrieval accuracy of LST over urban areas using in situ LST measurements, the performance of the RTE-based LST retrieval method was evaluated via comparing brightness temperature (BT) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) simulated by the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model and the urban RTE over three subregions. There is a good agreement between BT at the TOA simulated by the DART model and the urban RTE, with a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of less than 0.25 K. The variations in LST retrieved with urban geometry effect correction over different local climate zones (LCZs) were analyzed. In general, built-up LCZs have relatively higher LST than land cover LCZs. The differences between LST retrieved without/with urban geometry effect correction over different LCZs are greater than 0.2 K. The largest average LST difference over built-up LCZs is approximately 0.9 K, whereas that over land cover LCZs is approximately 0.65 K. LST retrieved without/with urban geometry effect correction was used to calculate urban heat island intensity (UHII) in terms of the LCZ-based method. The results indicate that UHII-calculated from LST with urban geometry effect correction is lower than that calculated from LST without urban geometry effect correction, with an average difference of approximately 0.5 K.

Abstract:Urban thermal condition has seriously affected the quality of residents daily life and triggered some environmental issues. Understanding spatial patterns of land surface temperature (LST) and its driving mechanism is important for the sustainable development of cities. Taking Beijing as an example, this study employed spatial econometric models to investigate spatial and temporal heterogeneity of LST from 2014 to 2018 based on multisource remote sensing and statistical data. The global autocorrelation Moran's I index showed the existence of significant positive correlations of LST among regions, indicating the regions with high thermal environments are spatially adjacent. The temperature of a region would increase by more than 0.6 for every 1 increase in LST of surrounding areas based on the spatial Durbin model. In terms of spatial interactions of influencing factors, elevation, normalized difference vegetation index, modified normalized difference water index, nighttime light, and fossil energy consumption of neighbors exhibited significantly positive spatial agglomeration effects on local LST, whereas albedo, GDP, and population density of adjacent areas had negative effects on LST in local areas. Particularly, the indirect effects of drivers were greater than their direct effects, indicating urban thermal condition was an interregional issue and joint control measures should be adopted to mitigate the urban heat island effects as a whole.

Abstract:The present study aims at investigating the impact of land cover features in enhancing or mitigating Land Surface Temperature (LST) in a semi-arid tropical metropolitan city of Bengaluru, India. Spatial distribution of LST and land cover types of the area were examined in the circumferential direction, and the contribution of land cover classes on LST was studied over 28 years. Urban growth and LST were modelled using Landsat and MODIS data for the years 1989, 2001, 2005 and 2017 based on the concentric ring approach. The study provides an efficient methodology for modelling and parameterisation of LST and urban growth by fitting an inverse S-curve into urban density (UD) and mean LST data. In addition, multiple linear regression models which could effectively predict the LST distribution based on land cover types were developed for both day and night time. Based on the analysis of remotely sensed data for LST, it is observed that over the years, urban core area has increased circumferentially from 5 to 10 km, and the urban growth has spread towards outskirts beyond 15 km from the city centre. As urban expansion occurs, the area under the study experiences an expansive cooling effect during day time; at night, an expansive heating effect is experienced in accordance with the growth in UD in the suburban area and outskirts. The regression models that were developed have relatively high accuracy with <i>R</i><sup>2</sup> value of more than 0.94 and could explain the relationship between LST and land cover types. The study also revealed that there exists a negative correlation between urban, vegetation, water body and LST during day time while a positive correlation is observed during night. Thus, this study could assist urban planners and policymakers in understanding the scientific basis for urban heating effect and predict LST for the future development for implementing green infrastructure. The proposed methodology could be applied to other urban areas for quantifying the distribution of LST and different land cover types and their interrelationships.
