Magnetism and Magneto-optical Effects in Bulk and Few-layer CrI$_3$: A Theoretical GGA + U Study

Abstract:The latest discovery of ferromagnetism in atomically thin films of semiconductors Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ and CrI$_3$ has unleashed numerous opportunities for fundamental physics of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) limit and also for technological applications based on 2D magnetic materials. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic, electronic, optical and magneto-optical(MO) properties of multilayers [monolayer(ML), bilayer and trilayer] and bulk CrI$_3$, based on the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus on-site Coulomb repulsion scheme. Interestingly, all the structures are found to be single-spin ferromagnetic(FM) semiconductors. They all have a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy(MAE) of $\sim$0.5 meV/Cr. These large MAEs suppress transverse spin fluctuations and thus stabilize long-range magnetic orders at finite temperatures down to the ML limit. They also exhibit strong MO effects with their Kerr and Faraday rotation angles being comparable to that of best-known bulk MO materials. The shape and position of the main features in the optical and MO spectra are found to be nearly thickness-independent although the magnitude of Kerr rotation angles increases monotonically with the film thickness. Magnetic transition temperatures estimated based on calculated exchange coupling parameters, calculated optical conductivity, MO Kerr and Faraday rotation angles agree quite well with available experimental data. The calculated MAE as well as optical and MO properties are analyzed in terms of the calculated orbital-decomposed densities of states, band state symmetries and dipole selection rules. Our findings of large out-of-plane MAEs and strong MO effects in these single-spin FM semiconducting CrI$_3$ ultrathin films suggest that they will find valuable applications in semiconductor MO and spintronic nanodevices.

Non-equilibrium THz-phonon spin coupling in CrI3

Abstract:Manipulating magnetism at the THz timescale in atomically thin ferromagnets by exploiting the interactions of spins with optical phonon modes presents an innovative idea for THz spintronics. Spin-phonon coupling raises an important question about the flow of spin angular momentum possibly to chiral phonons. We use femtosecond optical pulses to generate bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) in the 2D ferromagnet CrI3, and probe the subsequent charge and spin dynamics. The observed change in the optical signal during temporal pump-probe overlap represents the buildup of the exciton population. This is accompanied by the excitation of coherent optical phonon modes with 2.4 and 3.9 THz frequencies, corresponding to the bending and stretching of the Cr-I bonds. We observe both modes in the magnetism channel which agrees with first-principles calculations that identify changes in the exchange coupling due to the lattice displacements for both phonon modes.

All-optical magnetization control in CrI$_3$ monolayers: a microscopic theory

Abstract:Bright excitons in ferromagnetic monolayers CrI$_3$ efficiently interact with lattice magnetization, which makes possible all-optical resonant magnetization control in this material. Using the combination of ab-initio simulations within Bethe-Salpeter approach, semiconductor Bloch equations and Landau-Lifshitz equations, we construct a microscopic theory of this effect. Solving numerically the resulting system of the coupled equations describing the dynamics of atomic spins and spins of the excitons, we demonstrate the possibility of a tunable control of macroscopic magnetization of a sample.

Optically Resolved Exchange Splittings in the Doped Van der Waals Ferromagnet CrBr3:Yb3+

Abstract:The chromium-trihalides (CrX3; X = Cl, Br, I) have long served as model systems for understanding magnetism and magneto-optics in ionic crystals, and they have recently also emerged as archetypes of magnetic two-dimensional (2D) Van der Waals materials. Although the physical properties of CrX3 compounds have now been explored in great depth, the use of impurity doping to generate new properties remains surprisingly underexplored. Here we report on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties of lanthanide-doped CrBr3, in which Yb3+ is introduced as a spin-bearing optical point defect. Narrow-line near-infrared dopant photoluminescence is efficiently sensitized by CrBr3-to-Yb3+ energy transfer. Magneto-optical measurements show facile spin manipulation of the paramagnetic Yb3+ impurities by the surrounding CrBr3 lattice. Photoluminescence data reveal that the Kramers spin degeneracies of the ground- and excited-state Yb3+ doublets are spontaneously lifted by strong magnetic exchange with neighboring Cr3+ ions, such that individual Yb3+ spin transitions are easily resolved even at zero external magnetic field. The temperature and field dependence of these splittings can be used to probe both local and long-range spin correlations. These results highlight the use of extrinsic optical impurities to add new spin-photonic functionality to this classic 2D Van der Waals magnet.

Giant Magneto-Exciton Coupling in 2D van der Waals CrSBr

Abstract:Controlling magnetic order via external fields or heterostructures enables precise manipulation and tracking of spin and exciton information, facilitating the development of high-performance optical spin valves. However, the weak magneto-optical signals and instability of two dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials have hindered comprehensive studies on the complex coupling between magnetic order and excitons in bulk-like systems. Here, we leverage magneto-optical spectroscopy to reveal the impact of magnetic order on exciton-phonon coupling and exciton-magnetic order coupling which remains robust even under non-extreme temperature conditions (80 K) in thick layered CrSBr. A 0.425T in-plane magnetic field is sufficient to induce spin flipping and transition from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) magnetic order in CrSBr, while magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy under an out-of-plane magnetic field provides direct insight into the complex spin canting behavior in thicker layers. Theoretical calculations reveal that the strong coupling between excitons and magnetic order, especially the 32 meV exciton energy shift during magnetic transitions, stems from the hybridization of Cr and S orbitals and the larger exciton wavefunction radius of higher-energy B excitons. These findings offer new opportunities and a solid foundation for future exploration of 2D AFM materials in magneto-optical sensors and quantum communication using excitons as spin carriers.

Magnetic polaronic exciton in A-type 2D van der Waals bulk material CrSBr

Abstract:2D magnetic semiconductor CrSBr exhibits unique magneto-optical properties, yet its electronic structure and photophysical mechanisms remain unclear at high magnetic field and low temperature. Through comprehensive spectroscopic investigations, its charge-transfer band edge is identified at 500 nm. Below this band-edge, local excitonic magnetic polaronic states from Cr3+ ions out of FM aggregates in layer and bilayer could be seen due to phonon-spin-exciton coupling, in which magnetic polaronic PL1 emission occurs at 720 nm from single Cr3+ d-d transition, a dark-state pair exciton occurs at 850 nm in 10 K magnetic field, and double-peak PL2 emission at 920 nm out of Cr3+ FM trimer in monolayer is seen; besides, the magnetic bi-polaronic PL3 at 990 nm can be assigned to Cr3+ tetramers between FM adjacent layers. In magnetic field perpendicular to the layer, direct competition between PL1and dark-state excitons and PL2 and PL3 excitonic states persist in different temperatures. This study sheds light on the complicated magneto-exciton interactions in the multi-body effect of CrSBr, beneficial for quantum modulation in layered magnetic semiconductors.

Robust polaritons in magnetic monolayers of CrI3

Abstract:We show that the regime of strong-light matter coupling with remarkable magnetic properties can be realized in systems based on monolayers of chromium triiodide (CrI3). This two-dimensional material combines the presence of ferromagnetic ordering with the possibility of forming strongly-bound excitonic complexes even at room temperature. Using microscopic first-principle calculations we reveal a rich spectrum of optical transitions, corresponding to both Wannier- and Frenkel-type excitons, including those containing electrons with a negative effective mass. We show that excitons of different polarizations efficiently hybridize with a photonic mode of a planar microcavity, and due to the peculiar selection rules polariton modes become well resolved in circular polarizations. The combination of very strong optical oscillator strength of excitons and cavity confinement leads to large values of the Rabi splitting, reaching 35 meV for a single monolayer, and giant Zeeman splitting between polariton modes of up to 20 meV. This makes CrI3 an excellent platform for magnetopolaritonic applications.

Abstract:2D magnetic semiconductors, which intrinsically couple a rich landscape of magnetic orders with tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons), present an exciting platform to investigate the interplay between optical and magnetic phenomena at the atomic scale. In such systems, the strength of magneto-optical effects determines how deeply the magnetic properties can be revealed. Here, we report the observation of remarkably strong magneto-excitonic effects in the 2D magnetic semiconductor CrSBr that allow probing its magnetic order with unprecedented sensitivity. By investigating optical transitions above the fundamental exciton energy, we discover a massive spectral shift approaching 100 meV under applied magnetic fields - an order of magnitude larger than previously observed magneto-excitonic responses. Our comprehensive magneto-optical experiments accompanied by detailed DFT calculations indicate the possible origin of the transitions exhibiting such intriguing behavior. These findings open avenues for exploiting magneto-excitonic phenomena at newly accessible regimes, enabling novel opto-spintronic applications previously limited by weak magnetic responses.

Abstract:Abstract The discovery of two-dimensional systems hosting intrinsic magnetic order represents a seminal addition to the rich landscape of van der Waals materials. CrI 3 is an archetypal example, where the interdependence of structure and magnetism, along with strong light-matter interactions, provides a new platform to explore the optical control of magnetic and vibrational degrees of freedom at the nanoscale. However, the nature of magneto-structural coupling on its intrinsic ultrafast timescale remains a crucial open question. Here, we probe magnetic and vibrational dynamics in bulk CrI 3 using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, revealing spin-flip scattering-driven demagnetization and strong transient exchange-mediated interactions between lattice vibrations and spin oscillations. The latter yields a coherent spin-coupled phonon mode that is highly sensitive to the driving pulse’s helicity in the magnetically ordered phase. Our results elucidate the nature of ultrafast spin-lattice coupling in CrI 3 and highlight its potential for applications requiring high-speed control of magnetism at the nanoscale.

Abstract:The observation of magnetic ordering in atomically thin CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ monolayers has aroused intense interest in condensed matter physics and material science. Studies of van de Waals two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are of both fundamental importance and application interest. In particular, exciton-enhanced magneto-optical properties revealed in CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$ monolayers have expanded the understanding of exciton physics in 2D materials. Unlike CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$ with out-of-plane magnetization, CrSBr has an in-plane magnetic moment, therefore, providing a good opportunity to study the magnetic linear dichroism and high-order magneto-optical effects. Here, based on the many-body perturbation method within density-functional theory, we have studied quasiparticle electronic structure, exciton, and optical properties in CrSBr monolayer. Strongly bounded exciton has been identified with the first bright exciton located at 1.35 eV, in good agreement with an experiment of photoluminescence (Nat. Mater. \textbf{20}, 1657 (2021)). Strong contrast in the optical absorption is found between the electric fields lying along the in-plane two orthogonal directions. In accordance with a typical and realistic experimental setup, we show that the rotation angle of linear polarized light, either reflected or transmitted, could be comparable with those revealed in black phosphorene. Such large linear dichroism arises mainly from anisotropic in-plane crystal structure. The magnetic contribution from the off-diagonal component of dielectric function to the linear dichroism in CrSBr is negligible. Our findings not only have revealed excitonic effect on the optical and magneto-optical properties in 2D ferromagnet CrSBr, but also have shown its potential applications in 2D optics and optoelectronics.

Effects Of External Magnetic Field And Out-Of-Plane Strain On Magneto-Optical Kerr Spectra In Cri3 Monolayer

Abstract:Magnetic semiconductors based on two-dimensional (2D) crystals have attracted attention owing to their intrinsic ferromagnetism and have potential for spintronic devices. Here, fullpotential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method is used to explore the structural, electronic, magnetic, and magneto-optical properties of CrI3 monolayer. Our firstprinciples calculations show that CrI3 monolayer is a ferromagnetic indirect semiconductor with spin-up and spin-down band gaps of 1.23 and 1.90 eV, respectively, and a magnetic moment of 2.93 mu B per Cr atom. Based on the macroscopic linear response theory, we systematically study the influences of external magnetic field and out-of-plane strain on the magneto-optical Kerr effect spectra in CrI3 monolayer. The Kerr rotation of CrI3 monolayer at 1.96 eV photon energy is -0.30 degrees, which is consistent with the recent experiments. We find that the Kerr rotation reaches its maximum when the external magnetic field is perpendicular to CrI3 plane, while it is almost zero on turning the magnetic field in the plane. This result as well as the sizable magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of 0.79 meV verifies that CrI3 monolayer has a strong magnetic anisotropy with an out-of-plane easy axis. Further, applying out-of-plane compressive and tensile strain upon CrI3 monolayer, we observe a redshift of the Kerr rotation spectra with the increase of the strain and the peak values of the Kerr rotation increase correspondingly. The rich electronic and magnetic properties, especially the magnetooptical spectra, render CrI3 monolayer a promising 2D magnetic material for applications from sensing to data storage.
Strong Exciton-Phonon Coupling as a Fingerprint of Magnetic Ordering in van der Waals Layered CrSBr

Abstract:The layered, air-stable van der Waals antiferromagnetic compound CrSBr exhibits pronounced coupling between its optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. As an example, exciton dynamics can be significantly influenced by lattice vibrations through exciton-phonon coupling. Using low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate the effective coupling between excitons and phonons in nanometer-thick CrSBr. By careful analysis, we identify that the satellite peaks predominantly arise from the interaction between the exciton and an optical phonon with a frequency of 118 cm-1 (~14.6 meV) due to the out-of-plane vibration of Br atoms. Power-dependent and temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements support exciton-phonon coupling and indicate a coupling between magnetic and optical properties, suggesting the possibility of carrier localization in the material. The presence of strong coupling between the exciton and the lattice may have important implications for the design of light-matter interactions in magnetic semiconductors and provides new insights into the exciton dynamics in CrSBr. This highlights the potential for exploiting exciton-phonon coupling to control the optical properties of layered antiferromagnetic materials.

Abstract:The magneto-optical property of magnets is used for detecting their magnetization and for information storage applications. The elastic interaction of light with magnetic materials is modulated by the spin-orbital coupling, which is manifested by the rotation of the polarization plane of scattered light with respect to the injected light. The magnetic order also participates in the inelastic Raman scattering of light, as experimentally demonstrated by an ∼40∘ rotation of the polarization plane by the two-dimensional ferromagnet CrI3. In this paper, we investigate the magneto-Raman properties of monolayer CrX3 (X=Cl, Br, and I) using first-principles methods. We calculate the Raman tensor and the Raman intensity due to the A1g phonon by taking the spin-orbit coupling into account. Experimental results on CrI3 are well reproduced. Both the rotation angle of the polarization plane of linearly polarized light and the Raman circular polarization strongly depend on the energy of the injected photons.

Abstract:Magnetism in two-dimensional materials reveals phenomena distinct from bulk magnetic crystals, with sensitivity to charge doping and electric fields in monolayer and bilayer van der Waals magnet CrI3. Within the class of layered magnets, semiconducting CrSBr stands out by featuring stability under ambient conditions, correlating excitons with magnetic order and thus providing strong magnon-exciton coupling, and exhibiting peculiar magneto-optics of exciton-polaritons. Here, we demonstrate that both exciton and magnetic transitions in bilayer and trilayer CrSBr are sensitive to voltage-controlled field-effect charging, exhibiting bound exciton-charge complexes and doping-induced metamagnetic transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate how these unique properties enable optical probes of local magnetic order, visualizing magnetic domains of competing phases across metamagnetic transitions induced by magnetic field or electrostatic doping. Our work identifies few-layer CrSBr as a rich platform for exploring collaborative effects of charge, optical excitations, and magnetism.

Abstract:The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degree of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$. For monolayer samples, the dominant A$\rm_{1g}$ peak shows abnormally high intensity in the cross polarization channel at low temperature, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. While for bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past few decades, exciton-polaritons have attracted substantial research interest due to their half-light-half-matter bosonic nature. Coupling exciton-polaritons with magnetic orders grants access to rich many-body phenomena, but has been limited by the availability of material systems that exhibit simultaneous exciton resonances and magnetic ordering. Here we report magnetically-dressed microcavity exciton-polaritons in the van der Waals antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor CrSBr coupled to a Tamm plasmon microcavity. Using angle-resolved spectroscopy, we reveal an exceptionally high exciton-photon coupling strength, up to 169 meV, demonstrating ultrastrong coupling that persists up to room temperature. By performing temperature-dependent spectroscopy, we show the magnetic nature of the exciton-polaritons in CrSBr microcavity as the magnetic order changes from AFM to paramagnetic. By applying an out-of-plane magnetic field, we achieve effective tuning of the polariton energy while maintaining the ultrastrong exciton-photon coupling strength. We attribute this to the spin canting process that modulates the interlayer exciton interaction.

Abstract:Self‐hybridized exciton‐polaritons are achieved in van der Waals magnet CrSBr crystals free from external cavities up to room temperature. The ultrastrong exciton‐photon coupling effectively suppresses emission processes related to donors, phonons, and defects. Moreover, adjustments in the magnetic field, temperature, and CrSBr crystal thickness can precisely tailor the exciton‐polariton dispersion and emission behaviors. 2D van der Waals (vdW) layered materials exhibit significant exciton binding energy and versatile stacking options, making them ideal for room‐temperature exciton‐polariton devices used in low‐threshold lasing, nonlinear optical switching, and quantum computing. However, most existing systems depend on external optical microcavities coupled with single monolayers, leading to limited controllability and increased costs. Here, external cavity‐free vdW magnet CrSBr crystals are presented that feature magnetically controllable self‐hybridized exciton‐polaritons that remain stable up to room temperature. The ultrastrong exciton‐photon coupling suppresses donor‐, phonon‐, and defect‐related emissions. Furthermore, the exciton‐polariton dispersion and emission spectra can be effectively controlled by adjusting the magnetic field, temperature, and CrSBr thickness. This vdW exciton‐polariton material platform, demonstrating remarkable magnetic responsiveness in open cavity configurations under ambient conditions, paves the way for the development of compact, fast, and low‐loss spin, quantum, and magneto‐photonic devices.

Interplay between optical emission and magnetism in the van der Waals magnetic semiconductor CrSBr in the two-dimensional limit

Abstract:The Van der Waals semiconductor metamagnet CrSBr offers an ideal platform for studying the interplay between optical and magnetic properties in the two-dimensional limit. Here, we carried out an exhaustive optical characterization of this material by means of temperature and magnetic field dependent photoluminescence (PL) on flakes of different thicknesses down to the monolayer. We found a characteristic emission peak that is quenched upon switching the ferromagnetic layers from an antiparallel to a parallel configuration and exhibits a different temperature dependence from that of the peaks commonly ascribed to excitons. The contribution of this peak to the PL is boosted around 30-40 K, coinciding with the hidden order magnetic transition temperature. Our findings reveal the connection between the optical and magnetic properties via the ionization of magnetic donor vacancies. This behavior enables a useful tool for the optical reading of the magnetic states in atomically thin layers of CrSBr and shows the potential of the design of two-dimensional heterostructures with magnetic and excitonic properties.

Abstract:Controlling magnetism via electric fields addresses fundamental questions of magnetic phenomena and phase transitions1–3, and enables the development of electrically coupled spintronic devices, such as voltage-controlled magnetic memories with low operation energy4–6. Previous studies on dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As and (In,Mn)Sb have demonstrated large modulations of the Curie temperatures and coercive fields by altering the magnetic anisotropy and exchange interaction2,4,7–9. Owing to their unique magnetic properties10–14, the recently reported two-dimensional magnets provide a new system for studying these features15–19. For instance, a bilayer of chromium triiodide (CrI3) behaves as a layered antiferromagnet with a magnetic field-driven metamagnetic transition15,16. Here, we demonstrate electrostatic gate control of magnetism in CrI3 bilayers, probed by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy. At fixed magnetic fields near the metamagnetic transition, we realize voltage-controlled switching between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states. At zero magnetic field, we demonstrate a time-reversal pair of layered antiferromagnetic states that exhibit spin-layer locking, leading to a linear dependence of their MOKE signals on gate voltage with opposite slopes. Our results allow for the exploration of new magnetoelectric phenomena and van der Waals spintronics based on 2D materials.

Abstract:Manipulating physical properties using the spin degree of freedom constitutes a major part of modern condensed matter physics and is a key aspect for spintronics devices. Using the newly discovered two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic CrI3 as a prototype material, we theoretically demonstrated a giant magneto band-structure (GMB) effect whereby a change of magnetization direction significantly modifies the electronic band structure. Our density functional theory calculations and model analysis reveal that rotating the magnetic moment of CrI3 from out-of-plane to in-plane causes a direct-to-indirect bandgap transition, inducing a magnetic field controlled photoluminescence. Moreover, our results show a significant change of Fermi surface with different magnetization directions, giving rise to giant anisotropic magnetoresistance. Additionally, the spin reorientation is found to modify the topological states. Given that a variety of properties are determined by band structures, our predicted GMB effect in CrI3 opens a new paradigm for spintronics applications.
