Abstract:The development of visible light responsive photocatalysts for simultaneous production of hydrogen (H-2) fuel and value-added chemicals is greatly promising to solve the energy and environmental issues by improving the utilization efficiency of solar energy. Herein, the three-component Ni/(Au@CdS) core-shell nanostructures were constructed by the hydrothermal synthesis followed with photodeposition. The intimate integration of plasmonic Au nanospheres and visible-light responsive CdS shells modified with Ni cocatalyst facilitated the generation and separation of electron-hole pairs as well as reduced the overpotential of hydrogen evolution. The Ni/(Au@CdS) photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance toward the selective transformation of benzyl alcohol under anaerobic conditions, and the yields of H-2 and benzaldehyde reached up to 3882 and 4242 mu mol.g(-1).h(,)(-1) respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was determined to be 4.09% under the irradiation of 420 nm. The systematic studies have verified the synergy of plasmonic effect and metal cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis. This work highlights the desirable design and potential application of plasmonic photocatalysts for solar-driven coproduction of H-2 fuel and high-value chemicals. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. One-pot synthesized plasmonic black gold nanoparticles for efficient photocatalytic CO oxidation

Abstract:Dendritic plasmonic colloidosome, also known as "black gold", is a unique plasmonic material with broad-spectrum light absorption extending from visible to near-infrared wavelengths. Black gold has demonstrated remarkable performance in challenging and industrially relevant reactions, such as CO 2 reduction, alcohol oxidation, acetylene semi-hydrogenation, and purification of seawater. Unfortunately, one of the major shortcomings of black gold lies in its intricate multi-step synthesis procedure. This involves the step-by-step growth of Au nanoparticles on a dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS) support, a task spanning several days. Furthermore, the need for solid separation through centrifugation after each cycle is an additional bottleneck. Consequently, this complexity poses a challenge for industrial scaling. In this work, we report a simplified and efficient one-pot synthesis of plasmonic black gold. The one-pot method streamlines the synthesis process, significantly reducing the time from days to hours and eliminating the need for solid separation steps, thereby enhancing sustainability. Characterization studies reveal the optimal reaction time of an hour (instead of days) during the growth step, resulting in black gold materials closely resembling those synthesized via the conventional cycle-by-cycle method. We further demonstrated that DPC-60 synthesized via a one-pot protocol efficiently catalyzes CO oxidation under light, achieving 87% CO conversion at 4.0 W cm −2 without external heating. In situ DRIFTS studies revealed key adsorption sites involved in the CO oxidation reaction, with bridged CO adsorbed on Au 0 sites reacting faster than linearly adsorbed CO, and CO on high-coordinated Au 0 sites exhibiting a faster reaction rate than that on low-coordinated sites. Thus, the one-pot synthesis will facilitate rapid exploration of black gold's applications in a range of fields and also pave the way for scalable industrial deployment.

Abstract:Abstract The majority of visible light-active plasmonic catalysts are often limited to Au, Ag, Cu, Al, etc., which have considerations in terms of costs, accessibility, and instability. Here, we show hydroxy-terminated nickel nitride (Ni 3 N) nanosheets as an alternative to these metals. The Ni 3 N nanosheets catalyze CO 2 hydrogenation with a high CO production rate (1212 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and selectivity (99%) using visible light. Reaction rate shows super-linear power law dependence on the light intensity, while quantum efficiencies increase with an increase in light intensity and reaction temperature. The transient absorption experiments reveal that the hydroxyl groups increase the number of hot electrons available for photocatalysis. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy shows that the CO 2 hydrogenation proceeds via the direct dissociation pathway. The excellent photocatalytic performance of these Ni 3 N nanosheets (without co-catalysts or sacrificial agents) is suggestive of the use of metal nitrides instead of conventional plasmonic metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:Carbon materials were modified with MnOx via a novel self-limiting electroless deposition using KMnO4 as the precursor. Gold nanoparticles were loaded onto MnOx/C via deposition–precipitation. The resulting Au/MnOx/C showed higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than Au/C, and the conversion was stable on stream. The performance of Au/MnOx/C was compared with that of Au/C, MnOx/C, MnOx/Au/C, Au/MnOx, and Au/MnOx/TiO2, and relevant characterization, applying XRD, BET, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, and EDX, was conducted.
Unveiling the Difference in the Activity and Selectivity of Nickel Based Cocatalysts for CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Seeking earth-abundant and high-performance cocatalysts is important and indispensable to achieve highly efficient artificial photoreduction of CO2 to solar fuels, an eco-friendly and sustainable approach to remedy environmental damage and address the energy crisis. Herein, as promising noble-metal-free candidates, six Ni species including Ni, NiO, NiS, Ni2P, Ni3C and Ni3N were deposited on TiO2 nanosheets to evaluate their cocatalytic behaviors in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. It is found that Ni and NiO cannot improve the photocatalytic activity dramatically, while NiS and Ni2P substantially accelerate the side H2 evolution and drastically decrease the selectivity for CO2 reduction. Conversely, Ni3C and Ni3N significantly promote the CO2-to-CO conversion and effectively inhibit the proton reduction reaction. In particular, the best-performing TiO2-Ni3N affords a maximum CO production rate of 49.6 μmol gcat−1 h−1 and supreme selectivity of 94.1 % for CO2 reduction. The origin of the activity and selectivity difference of Ni based cocatalyst is the distinct electron trapping abilities in separation of electron-hole pairs and varied surface reactivities in adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules. Theoretical simulations also reveal that the six Ni species possess diverse thermodynamic energy barriers for CO2-to-CO conversion and side H2 generation. Results support the development of novel earth-abundant cocatalysts for solar energy conversion applications.
Electronic Structure Engineering of Pt–Ni Alloy NPs by Coupling of Gold Single Atoms on N‐Doped Carbon for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Gold single atoms are implanted into NDC using a facile photochemical deposition method. They serve as electron donors, creating a strong interaction between Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles and the NDC support. This electronic interaction effect enhances the catalytic activity and durability of the material for the ORR and the HER. Improving the catalytic activity and durability of platinum‐based alloy catalysts remains a formidable challenge in the context of renewable energy electrolysis applications. Herein, a facile and rapid photochemical deposition strategy for the synthesis of gold single atoms (Au SAs) anchored on N‐doped carbon is presented. These Au SAs serve as a charge redistribution support for Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles (PtNiNPs/AuSA‐NDC), creating an extended electron‐donating interface with Pt–Ni alloy sites. Consequently, the PtNiNPs/AuSA‐NDC hybrid catalyst manifests exceptional catalytic performance and durability in both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions. Specifically, in ORR, it exhibits a half‐wave potential (0.92 V vs RHE), with a mass activity 20.4 times superior to Pt/C at 0.9 V. In HER, PtNiNPs/AuSA‐NDC demonstrates a notably reduced overpotential of 19.1 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm−2 and a mass activity 38 times higher than Pt/C (at 0.25 mV). Furthermore, this hybrid catalyst displays outstanding durability, with only an 8.0 mV decay observed for ORR and a 6.9 mV decay for HER after 10 000 cycles. Theoretical calculations provide insight into the mechanism, demonstrating that isolated Au sites effectively modulate the electronic structure of Pt–Ni alloy sites, facilitating intermediate adsorption and enhancing reaction kinetics.

Abstract:A series of hydrotalcite (HT) and hydrotalcite modified by the transition metal ion Ni(II) was prepared with a modified coprecipitation method before being loaded with gold nanoparticles. The gold supported on Ni3Al hydrotalcite with a Ni2+/Al3+ molar ratio of 3:1 was investigated. Different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrum (UV-vis DRS) were applied to characterize the catalysts. A single-phase catalyst with high crystallinity, a layered structure and good composition was successfully fabricated. Good conversions and superior selectivities in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives were obtained with visible light due to the effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles and the synergy of the transition metal ion Ni(II). This reaction was proven to be photocatalytic by varying the intensity and wavelength of the visible light. The catalyst can be recycled three times. A corresponding photocatalytic mechanism of the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol was proposed.
The role of the gold-platinum interface in AuPt/TiO2-catalyzed plasmon-induced reduction of CO2 with water

Abstract:Bimetallic gold-platinum nanoparticles have been widely studied in the fields of nanoalloys, catalysis and plasmonics. Many preparation methods can lead to the formation of these bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs), and the structure and related properties of the nanoalloy often depend on the preparation method used. Here we investigate the ability of thermal dimethylformamide (DMF) reduction to prepare bimetallic gold-platinum sub-nm clusters supported on titania. We find that deposition of Pt preferentially occurs on gold. Formation of sub-nm clusters (vs. NPs) appears to be dependent on the metal concentration used: clusters can be obtained for metal loadings up to 4 wt% but 7-8 nm NPs are formed for metal loadings above 8 wt%, as shown using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows electron-rich Au and Pt components in a pure metallic form and significant platinum enrichment of the surface, which increases with increasing Pt/Au ratio and suggests the presence of Au@Pt core-shell type structures. By contrast, titania-supported bimetallic particles (typically >7 nm) obtained by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction in DMF, contain Au/Pt Janus-type objects in addition to oxidized forms of Pt as evidenced by HRTEM, which is in agreement with the lower Pt surface enrichment found by XPS. Both types of supported nanostructures contain a gold-platinum interface, as shown by the chemical interface damping, i.e. gold plasmon damping by Pt, found using UV-visible spectroscopy. Evaluation of the materials for plasmon-induced continuous flow CO2 reduction with water, shows that: (1) subnanometer metallic clusters are not suitable for CO2 reduction with water, producing hydrogen from the competing water reduction instead, thereby highlighting the plasmonic nature of the reaction; (2) the highest methane production rates are obtained for the highest Pt enrichments of the surface, i.e. the core-shell-like structures achieved by the thermal DMF reduction method; (3) selectivity towards CO2 reduction vs. the competing water reduction is enhanced by loading of the plasmonic NPs, i.e. coverage of the titania semi-conductor by plasmonic NPs. Full selectivity is achieved for loadings above 6 wt%, regardless of the NPs composition and alloy structure.

Abstract:We report the deposition of single atom nickel catalyst on refractory plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) nanomaterials supports using the wet synthesis method under visible light irradiation. TiN nanoparticles efficiently absorb visible light to generate photoexcited electrons and holes. Photoexcited electrons reduce nickel precursor to deposit Ni atoms on TiN nanoparticles' surface. The generated hot holes are scavenged by the methanol. We studied the Ni deposition on TiN nanoparticles by varying light intensity, light exposure time, and metal precursor concentration. These studies confirmed the photodeposition method is driven by hot electrons and helped us to find optimum synthesis conditions for single atoms deposition. We characterized the nanocatalysts using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to predict favorable deposition sites and aggregation energy of Ni atoms on TiN. Surface defect sites of TiN are most favorable for single nickel atoms depositions. Interestingly, the oxygen sites on native surface oxide layer of TiN also exhibit strong binding with the single Ni atoms. Plasmon enhanced synthesis method can facilitate photodeposition of single atom catalysts on a wide class of metallic supports with plasmonic properties.
Sponge-shaped Au nanoparticles: A stand-alone metallic photocatalyst for driving the light-induced CO2 reduction reaction

Abstract:Coinage metal nanoparticles (NPs) enable plasmonic catalysis by generating hot carriers that drive chemical reactions. Making NPs porous enhances the adsorption of reactant molecules. We present a dewetting and dealloying strategy to fabricate porous gold nanoparticles (Au-Sponge) and compare their CO2 photoreduction activity with respect to the conventional gold nanoisland (Au-Island) morphology. Porous gold nanoparticles exhibit an unusually broad and red-shifted plasmon resonance which is in agreement with the results of finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. The key insight of this work is that the multi-step reduction of CO2 driven by short-lived hot carriers generated by the d → s interband transition proceeds extremely quickly as evidenced by the generation of methane. A 3.8-fold enhancement in the photocatalytic performance is observed for the Au-Sponge in comparison to the Au-Island. Electrochemical cyclic voltammetry measurements confirm the 2.5-fold increase in the surface area and roughness factor of the Au-Sponge sample due to its porous nature. Our results indicate that the product yield is limited by the amount of surface adsorbates i.e. reactant-limited. Isotope-labeled mass spectrometry using 13CO2 was used to confirm that the reaction product (13CH4) originated from CO2 photoreduction. We present the plasmon-mediated photocatalytic transformation of 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) into p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) using Au-Sponge and Au-Island samples.
Impacting the Surface Chemistry of NiAu by Immobilizing on MgO/N‐rich Nanoporous Carbon Heterostructures for Boosting Catalytic Activities

Abstract:Tuning the physical and chemical interaction between metal–metal′ (M‐M′) and metal–support is an ideal way to realize enhanced catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles (NPs). As a proof of concept, herein we report the fabrication of nickel‐gold (Ni‐Au) alloy nanoparticles attached to N‐doped nanoporous carbon (NPC) intervened with MgO (Ni73Au27@MgO‐NPC), achieved through the impregnation of metal precursors into Schiff‐base network polymer (SNP) framework along with Mg(OH)2 and pyrolysis at 800 °C in N2 atmosphere. With high stability and heterogeneity, the nickel rich Ni73Au27@MgO‐NPC exhibited higher catalytic activities with turnover frequencies of 29,272 h‐1 (hydrogenation of p‐nitrophenol), 93,843 h‐1 (degradation of methyl orange), and 2,218 h‐1 (epoxidation of stilbene). Enhanced catalytic activity is correlated to the synchronized electron density enhancement in Au, by Ni and MgO/N‐rich nanoporous carbon heterostructures, as evident from detailed X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies.

Abstract:AbstractMetallic nickel nanostructures that were partially decorated by discrete nickel oxide layers were fabricated by in situ reduction of calcinated Ni‐containing layered double hydroxide nanosheets, the structure of which was confirmed by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The existence of the abundant interfaces between the surface Ni oxide overlayer and metallic Ni altered the geometric/electronic structure of the Ni nanoparticles, making them apt for CO activation under light irradiation. Most importantly, the unique structure favors the C−C coupling reaction on its surface, which confers the catalyst unexpected reaction power towards higher hydrocarbons at moderate reaction conditions. This study leads to a green and sustainable approach for the photocatalytic production of highly valuable chemical fuels.
Effect of Ni Addition on the Low Temperature Carbon Monoxide Oxidation over Au/HAP Nanocatalyst

Abstract:Supported gold catalysts with their uniquely catalytic properties have found extensive applications. A challenge for gold catalyst research is now to prevent the sintering of gold particles at high temperature maintaining their high activities simultaneously. Herein, Au/Ni–HAP catalyst with high activity and sintering-resistance was prepared by a deposition–precipitation method. Samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, UV–Vis, ICP, XPS, FT-Raman and O2-TPD, and their catalytic performance for CO oxidation was tested. TEM results indicated that Au/Ni–HAP catalyst had the smaller gold nanoparticles than Au/HAP catalyst. In UV–Vis spectra, the addition of Ni to Au/HAP catalyst gave rise to larger absorption into visible light, changing the electronic structure of Au/HAP catalyst. Based on XPS studies, nickel existed mainly as NiO in Au/Ni–HAP catalyst, and a small amount of Ni(OH)2 also was formed in Au/Ni–HAP catalyst. Profiles of O2-TPD revealed that Au/Ni–HAP catalyst performed bigger adsorption of oxygen and possessed more new oxygen adsorption sites compared with Au/HAP catalyst. Results showed that Au/Ni–HAP catalyst had better catalytic activity and sintering-resistance than Au/HAP catalyst. The enhanced activity could be attributed to the synergistic effect of gold, nickel and HAP in Au/Ni–HAP catalyst, which created plenty of oxygen vacancies and changed the electronic structure of Au/HAP catalyst.

Abstract:The integration of titanium dioxide with gold nanoparticles led to a 12‐fold enhancement in the plasmonically driven regeneration of nicotinamide cofactor, by following a less‐explored light‐independent pathway. Photocatalysis with plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) is emerging as an attractive strategy to make and break chemical bonds. However, the fast relaxation dynamics of the photoexcited charge carriers in plasmonic NPs often result in poor yields. The separation and extraction of photoexcited hot‐charge carriers should be faster than the thermalization process to overcome the limitation of poor yield. This demands the integration of rationally chosen materials to construct hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts. In this work, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of gold nanoparticle‐titanium dioxide metal‐semiconductor heterostructure (Au‐TiO2) is used for the efficient regeneration of nicotinamide (NADH) cofactors. The modification of plasmonic AuNPs with n‐type TiO2 semiconductor enhanced the charge separation process, because of the Schottky barrier formed at the Au–TiO2 heterojunction. This led to a 12‐fold increment in the photocatalytic activity of plasmonic AuNP in regenerating NADH cofactor. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that Au‐TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst followed a less‐explored light‐independent pathway, in comparison to the conventional light‐dependent path followed by sole AuNP photocatalyst. NADH regeneration yield reached ~70% in the light‐independent pathway, under optimized conditions. Thus, our study emphasizes the rational choice of components in hybrid nanostructures in dictating the photocatalytic activity and the underlying reaction mechanism in plasmon‐powered chemical transformations.

Research on unsupported nanoporous gold catalyst for CO oxidation

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG), a novel unsupported gold catalyst prepared by dealloying, exhibits exceptional catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Systematic studies were carried out on this new catalytic system, including the active sites of catalysts, the reaction kinetics, and activity dependence as functions of space velocity and temperature. Our results show strong evidence that metallic gold atoms on NPG are the intrinsic active sites at which the reaction of CO with O2 occurs. The kinetic study found that the reaction rate of CO oxidation on unsupported NPG depends significantly on CO concentration but only slightly on O2 concentration. We suggest that CO adsorption plays a decisive role in CO oxidation on NPG as the rate-limiting step. By completely ruling out the support influence, our findings provide considerable insight into the role of gold catalysts.
Synthesis of small Ni-core-Au-shell catalytic nanoparticles on TiO2 by galvanic replacement reaction

Abstract:We report the first preparation of small gold-nickel (AuNi) bimetallic nanoparticles (<5 nm) supported on titania by the method of galvanic replacement reaction (GRR), evidenced by the replacement of Ni atoms by Au atoms according to the stoichiometry of the reaction. We showed that this preparation method allowed not only the control of the gold and nickel contents in the samples, but also the formation of small bimetallic nanoparticles with strained core-shell structures, as revealed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping. The catalytic characterization by the probe reaction of semi-hydrogenation of butadiene showed that the resulting nickel-based nanocatalysts containing a small amount of gold exhibited higher selectivity to butenes than pure nickel catalysts and a high level of activity, closer to that of pure nickel catalysts than to that of pure gold catalysts. These improved catalytic performances could not be explained by a mere structural model of simple core-shell structure of the nanoparticles. Instead, they could come from the incorporation of Ni within the gold surface and/or from surface lattice relaxation and subsurface misfit defects.

Abstract:Under visible-light irradiation, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is considered a favorable photocatalyst for hydrogen (H-2) production from water splitting. However, the poor H-2 production and fast recombination rate of charge carriers prevent its practical applications. Therefore, the integration of g-C3H4 with suitable plasmonic materials to develop a nanocomposite photocatalyst is worthwhile for enhancing H-2 evolution. Herein, a highly efficient g-C3N4/Ni@N-doped C (termed as CN/Ni@C) plasmonic photocatalyst is developed by the combination of g-C3N4 and nickel supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni@C) for H-2 production from water splitting. The results show that photocatalytic performance is enhanced by Ni metallic plasmons over the CN/Ni@C nanocomposite. The optimized CN/Ni@C-1 (1 wt% Ni@C loading) plasmonic heterojunction achieves an efficient H-2 evolution rate of 56.67 mu mol h(-1), which is 4-fold higher than that of bare g-C3N4 (13.55 mu mol h(-1)) with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 5.20% under visible-light irradiation (lambda >= 420 nm). This improved performance is associated with the efficient charge separation, charge transfer, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metallic Ni nanoparticles. Additionally, the optimal CN/Ni@C-1 plasmonic heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic stability toward H-2 generation. We believe that this study will open the door to constructing and developing other plasmonic material decorated g-C3N4 photocatalysts for potential applications in sustainable and renewable energy.

Abstract:The methanation of CO2 using green hydrogen not only consumes CO2 as a carbon resource but also stores H2 with high density. However, the activation of CO2 molecules under mild conditions is challenging due to their inert nature. Herein, we report an efficient photothermal catalytic system using light irradiation which realizes the complete conversion of CO2 to methane without external heating. Over optimum bimetallic NiFe nanoparticles (NPs) with a Ni/Fe atomic ratio of 7, the CO2 conversion can reach up to 98% with a CH4 selectivity of 99%, and no catalyst deactivation was observed for more than 100 h, outperforming the reported catalysts. The catalytic performance is strongly dependent on the structure promoters, light absorption efficiency, NiFe particle sizes, and Ni/Fe ratio. The NiFe alloy NPs with an average size of ~21 nm dispersed on alumina nanosheets are evidenced to enhance the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, thus efficiently triggering the CO2 methanation. This work emphasizes and clarifies the important role of LSPR in CO2 hydrogenation, which may benefit the rational utilization of CO2 using solar power.

Abstract:Photodeposition has been widely used as a mild and efficient synthetic method to deposit co-catalysts. It is also worth studying how to synthesize non-noble metal photocatalysts with uniform dispersion. Different synthetic conditions in photodeposition have a certain influence on particle size distribution and photocatalytic activity. Therefore, we designed experiments to prepare the inexpensive composite photocatalyst Ni(OH)(2)/g-C3N4 by photodeposition. The Ni(OH)(2) co-catalysts disperse uniformly with particle sizes of about 10 nm. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of Ni(OH)(2)/g-C3N4 reached about 19 mmol g(-1) h(-1), with the Ni(OH)(2) deposition amount about 1.57 %. During 16 h stability testing, the rate of hydrogen production did not decrease significantly. The composite catalyst also revealed a good hydrogen production performance under sunlight. The Ni(OH)(2) co-catalyst enhanced the separation ability of photogenerated carriers, which was proved by surface photovoltage and fluorescence analysis.
