Abstract:This article explores the accelerated lifetime test approach to characterize the time-dependent response of a piezoelectrically driven microcantilever (PD-MC) based gas sensor. The novelty here relies on demonstrating how accelerated lifetime tests can be useful to differentiate sensing mechanisms for non-linear gas sensors. The results show the determination of the sensor's optimum operation time while maintaining result validity. The approach is demonstrated for 1,5-diaminopentane (cadaverine), a volatile organic compound (VOC) whose concentration in meat and fish products has been proven viable for determining the shelf life. A PD-MC functionalized with a cadaverine-specific binder was therefore incorporated into a hand-held electronic nose, and the response was found to be highly reliable within a specific resonance frequency shift, enabling the accurate prediction of meat and fish expiration dates. To identify the limits of detection in terms of cadaverine concentration and sensor lifetime, this study applies the results of accelerated life tests into a Weibull distribution analysis to extract the expected time to failure. For the accelerated life tests, a functionalized PD-MC was exposed to high concentrations of cadaverine, i.e., 252.3 mg/kg, 335.82 mg/kg, and 421.08 mg/kg, compared to the nominal concentration of 33 mg/kg observed in meat and fish samples. Furthermore, we demonstrate the differentiation of the response mechanisms of the system accruing from the concentration-dependent interaction of cadaverine with the binder. This enables the determination of the upper limit of the analyte concentration for a stable response. The findings suggest that the functionalized PD-MC sensor exhibits a linear and predictable response when exposed to a standard cadaverine concentration of 33 mg/kg for up to 93.01 min.

Abstract:This paper presents an analytical modeling of a piezoelectric multi-layer cantilever used as a micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) chemical sensor. Selectively coated microcantilevers have been developed for highly sensitive chemical sensor applications. The proposed piezoelectric chemical sensor consists of an array of multi-layer piezoelectric cantilevers with voltage output in the millivolt range that replaces the conventional laser-based position-sensitive detection systems. The sensing principle is based upon changes in the deflection induced by environmental factors in the medium where a microcantilever is immersed. Bending of the cantilever induces the potential difference on opposite sides of the piezoelectric layer providing an information signal about the detected chemicals.To obtain an application specific optimum design parameters and predict the cantilever performance ahead of actual fabrication, finite element analysis (FEM) simulations using CoventorWare (a MEMS design and simulation program) were performed. Analytical models of multi-layer cantilevers as well as simulation concept are described. Both mechanical and piezoelectric simulation results are carried out. Abstract:The development of microelectromechanical system-based sensors, such as microcantilever sensors, has garnered considerable interest across various fields. Notably, there is a significant focus on the detection of volatile alcohol vapors, which holds promise in mitigating breath-related illnesses. This study employed finite element analysis to simulate the deflection of a silica-based microcantilever coated with polymethyl methacrylate in response to different volatile alcohol vapors (VAVs), such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol. A Multiphysics framework was used to analyze the time-dependent response of a microcantilever to different concentrations of VAVs incorporating fluid–structure interaction. This complex model integrated the aspects of laminar flow, solid mechanics, and transport of dilute species. Significant agreement has been achieved between finite element analysis-simulated results and the experimental findings that we had previously documented. This alignment revealed consistent trends, with methanol exhibiting higher levels than ethanol, followed by isopropanol, further validating the robustness and reliability of the sensor system in VAV detection.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a method to optimize materials and dimensions of piezoelectric cantilevers for electronic nose applications via finite element analysis simulations. Here we studied the optimum piezoelectric cantilever configuration for detection of cadaverine, a biomarker for meat ageing, to develop a potential electronic nose for the meat industry. The optimized cantilevers were fabricated, characterized, interfaced using custom-made electronics, and tested by approaching meat pieces. The results show successful measurements of cadaverine levels for meat pieces with different ages, hence, have a great potential for applications within the meat industry shelf-life prediction.

Abstract:Design, fabrication and results from theoretical and experimental studies on the self-excited piezoelectric microcantilever are presented in this paper. Theoretical studies have been carried out to design the microcantilever and have been extended to harmonic analysis using the finite element technique. Silicon microfabrication has been successfully completed to create microcantilever devices. Experimental studies have been performed to obtain the resonance frequencies. Applied as a mass-sensitive sensor, the microcantilever has a sensitivity of −0.0024%/ppm and a minimum mass loading of 3.5×10−9 g with the help of a zeolite sensitive layer to freon.

Abstract:The sensing of harmful gases and vapors is of fundamental interest to control the industrial emissions and environmental contamination. Nitrogen/phosphorus codoped carbon nanotube sponges (NP-CNTSs) were used to detect ethanol, acetone, cyclohexane, isopropanol, and methanol. The NP-CNTSs were produced through the aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method using acetonitrile and triphenylphosphine as precursors at 1020 °C. The sensors based on NP-CNTSs were tested with varying operating temperatures (25-100 °C) and gas vapor concentrations (5-50 ppm). For instance, for a gas vapor concentration of 30 ppm and an operating temperature of 65 °C, the sensors showed changes in the electrical resistance of 1.12%, 1.21%, 1.09%, 2.4%, and 1.34% for ethanol, acetone, cyclohexane, isopropanol, and methanol, respectively. We found that the response and recovery times for isopropanol gas vapor are up to 43.7 s and 95 s, respectively. The current sensor outperformed the sensors reported in the literature by at least two times in the response measurement. Additionally, we performed van der Waals density functional theory calculations to elucidate the role of nitrogen and phosphorous codoped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and their interaction with the considered gas molecule. We analyzed the molecular adsorption energy, optimized structures, and the density of states and calculated the electrostatic potential surface for N-doped, P-doped, NP-codoped, and OH-functionalized NP-codoped metallic SWCNTs-(6,6) and semiconducting SWCNTs-(10,0). Adsorption energy calculations revealed that in most cases the molecules are adsorbed to carbon nanotubes via physisorption. The codoping in SWCNTs-(6,6) promoted structural changes in the surface nanotube and marked chemisorption for acetone molecules.

Abstract:A self-actuating and detecting (SAD) circuit loop that drives a micro-cantilever in a gas sensor, in which the resonance frequency shifting of the beam is monitored to detect its mass change caused by adsorption of certain gas molecules, is presented. The loop cannot only drive the cantilever but also trace the fundamental resonance frequency shift of the beam. The motivation of the SAD circuit is simplifying structure and process of the microbeam. This paper presents simulation and experiments of the mechanical resonance of the microbeam and resonance of the electric signal in the SAD loop. The relations between the two resonance frequencies are discussed and analyzed. While the beam is driven in resonating mode, the resonance frequency shift of the signal in the SAD circuit is approximately equal to the mechanical resonant frequency shift of the cantilever. The frequency resolution of the SAD with the microbeam is 0.6-0.7 Hz in our work, and theoretical measurement range of the system is 18750 Hz.
Gas Sensing Properties of A Composite Composed of Electrospun Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Nanofibers and in Situ Polymerized Polyaniline

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers with different diameters were fabricated by electrospinning and their composites with polyaniline (PANI) were formed by virtue of in situ solution polymerization. The coaxial composite nanofibers so prepared were then transferred to the surface of a gold interdigitated electrode to construct a gas sensor. The structure and morphology of the PANI/PMMA composite fibers were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which indicated that the coaxial nanofibres of PANI emeraldine salt and PMMA were successfully prepared. The electrical responses of the gas sensor based on the composite nanofibres towards triethylamine (TEA) vapors were investigated at room temperature. It was revealed that the sensor showed a sensing magnitude as high as 77 towards TEA vapor of 500ppm. In addition, the responses were linear, reversible and reproducible towards TEA vapors ranging from 20 to 500ppm. The diameters of the electrospun PMMA fibers had an effect on the sensing magnitude of the gas sensor, which is proposed to relate to the difference in the surface-to-volume ratio of the fibers. Furthermore, it was found that the concentration of doping acids only led to changes in resistance of the sensor, but could not affect its sensing characteristics. In contrast, the nature of the doping acids was determinative for the sensing magnitude of the sensor. The gas sensor with toluene sulfonic acid as the doping acid exhibited the highest sensing magnitude, which is explained by taking into account of the sensing mechanism and the interactions of doping acids with TEA vapor.

Abstract:We have developed a tungsten disulfide (WS2)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite based QCM gas sensor for (trimethylamine) TMA gas sensing of low concentrations. WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite was synthesized via the hydrothermal method and was characterized for surface morphology, nanostructure, thermal stability, and elementary composition. The TMA-sensing properties of WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite based QCM sensor were investigated. The composite based QCM sensor showed faster response time, strong response amplitude, good gas capacity, and good selectivity and stability compared with as prepared WS2 and MWCNTs-1 based QCM sensor. The response time of WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was 294.1 and 142.9 s shorter than WS2 and MWCNTs-1 for 500 ppb TMA gas. And the response of the WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was almost stable over 40 days, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 76 ppb calculated by the ICH method. This was ascribed to the fact that MWCNTs provided a skeleton for the growth of WS2 nanosheets and avoided agglomeration. The special structure could not only improve the structure ability but also expose more active adsorption sites. In order to further investigate the adsorption mechanism of the TMA molecule on (pure/functionalized) WS2 materials, density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on first-principle were conducted in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package under ideal conditions.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the analytical response of micro cantilever based gas sensor for the quantification of NOx gas molecules, simultaneously discussing the possibility of a different measurement technique. Numerous packed and digital gas sensors are available in the market, but each with its own limits. MEMS sensors provide smart working, portable, save space, and reusable. Hence the micro cantilever beam deposited with an active material such as palladium, reduced graphene oxide to monitor and obtain the concentration of NOx was identified in terms of deflection for deposited mass. The physics and study provided by COMSOL Multiphysics will be exploited for the current usage. Various materials such as silicon and diamond as a substrate were simulated and compared. This paper discussed about the different micro cantilever beam structures for the gas sensing mechanism and selects the better structure based on their deformation in structure due to applied mass. The excellent trapping substrate material for NOx is chosen. A new measurement technique using piezoelectric material will be discussed. The proposed method will be discussed based on their pros and cons by compared with other sensors. The drawbacks of the proposed technique are also highlighted. Overcoming the drawback of conventional measurement methodology and devising a novel sensor to make it compatible for gas sensing.

Abstract:A piezoelectric bimorph beam, as an upgraded cantilever beam structure, can be used to detect gas content and build a micro-actuator, among other functions. Thus, this beam is widely applied to microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), transformers, and precision machinery. For example, when photoacoustic spectroscopy is performed to detect oil-soluble gas in transformers, a micro-cantilever beam can be used to detect gas content. The dynamic characteristics of piezoelectric bimorph beams, such as resonant frequency, are important indexes in the applications of these beams. The equivalent circuit model for a piezoelectric bimorph beam is examined in this study and an admittance test is performed on the beam to accurately, quickly, and economically measure and analyze its dynamic characteristics. Then, the least squares method is applied to obtain the characteristic curves of the admittance circle, amplitude frequency, and phase frequency; identify the dynamic characteristics of the piezoelectric bimorph beam (e.g., resonant frequency); and determine the parameters of the equivalent circuit. The resonant frequency of the piezoelectric bimorph beam is 207.67 Hz based on the result of the admittance circle test, which is basically consistent with the results of microscope image method (i.e., 207.85 Hz) and the theoretical calculation (i.e., 222.03 Hz). This finding proves the validity of the proposed test method. This method cannot only improve the detection speed of piezoelectric bimorph beams, but can also provide a fast detection strategy for testing the characteristics of such beams during photoacoustic spectroscopy.

Abstract:A smart micro-cantilever in a creative gas sensor with high sensitivity is presented. The resonance frequency shifting of the cantilever is monitored to detect its mass change caused by adsorption of certain gas molecules. The cantilever has a more compact MEMS structure and the smart functions because of the sensor with a self-actuating and detecting (SAD) vibration system, which is integration of a vibration actuating system and a detecting system. The model of the smart beam is analyzed by computer simulation. Design rules of the beam are obtained according to related discuss with function goal of extremely rare gas detection. After fabrication and test of the smart cantilever, an improved solution of the smart cantilever is introduced by comparison study of the computer simulation and experiment results of the fabricated beam.
A Chemisorption-Based Microcantilever Chemical Sensor for the Detection of Trimethylamine

Abstract:This paper presents a new method for detecting trimethylamine (TMA) in gas and liquid phases using a piezoresistive microcantilever sensor functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The microcantilever consists of two silicon dioxide layers and a single crystalline silicon piezoresistor in-between. This configuration allows microcantilevers to achieve high sensitivity because of the low stiffness of silicon dioxide and the high piezoresistive coefficients of single crystalline silicon. The surface of the microcantilever is chemically functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) via Au–SH covalent bonding on a gold film deposited on the microcantilever. The 11-MUA SAM adsorbs TMA through hydrogen bonding between the SAM and TMA molecules, and the microcantilever is deflected by the changes in the surface stress as a result of the hydrogen bonding based chemisorption. Experimental results show that the deflection of the microcantilever depends on the concentration of TMA, and the minimum detection limits of 10mg/L for liquid TMA and 1.65μg/L for gas TMA are achieved. The selectivity of TMA with respect to ethanol, acetone, and butanone is also investigated.

Abstract:Micromechanical resonators have aroused growing interest as biological and chemical sensors, and microcantilever beams are the main research focus. Recently, a resonant microcantilever with an integrated heater has been applied in on-chip thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). However, there is a strong relationship between the mass sensitivity of a resonant microcantilever and the location of adsorbed masses. Different sampling positions will cause sensitivity differences, which will result in an inaccurate calculation of mass change. Herein, an integrated H-shaped resonant beam with uniform mass sensitivity and temperature distribution is proposed and developed to improve the accuracy of bio/chemical sensing and TGA applications. Experiments verified that the presented resonant beam possesses much better uniformity of sensitivity and temperature distribution compared with resonant microcantilevers. Gas-sensing and TGA experiments utilizing the integrated resonant beam were also carried out and exhibited good measurement accuracy.

Abstract:<p>Understanding the mechanical properties of bio-adsorbates at the pathological state is important in mechanobiology and medical diagnosis. With the development of biodetection technology, the mechanical properties of bio-adsorbates can be detected at microscale. The paper presents an integro-partial-differential theoretical model to elucidate the effect of adsorbate viscoelasticity on vibrational properties of elastic-viscoelastic microcantilever. A differential method in the temporal domain and a variable separation method or a differential quadrature method (DQM) in the spatial domain are combined to obtain the relevant analytical solutions for free vibration with a complete adsorption and numerical solutions for forced vibration with a local adsorption. The present results agree well with the previous studies in the case of complete elastic adsorption. The study shows that the amplitude of a weakly damped free vibration of the microcantilever is positively correlated with the reciprocal of relaxation time of adsorbate film; the dissipative mechanical property of adsorption film with a standard linear solid constitutive relation endows the forced vibration of the microcantilever subjected to a transverse harmonic load with a double-peak resonance; and the sensitivity of microcantilever-based dynamic detection can be improved remarkably if the excitation frequency, film-to-substrate thickness/ modulus ratio, adsorption position/ area are carefully controlled.</p>

Abstract:A novel gas sensor based on nanosized zeolite for the detection of nerve agent simulant gas Dimethylmethylphosphonate (DMMP) is developed in this work. Nanosized ZSM-5 zeolite films and Ag+ modified ZSM-5 zeolites films as a novel sensing membrane materials are immobilized on the piezoelectric sensor device QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance). A frequency shift with different concentrations of DMMP is measured. The gas sensor based on nanosized zeolite in resonating mode, whose resonant frequency shifts due to mass loading, has shown high sensitivity for detecting DMMP. The minimum detection concentration of DMMP is 1ppm in the N-2 at 303K. The frequency shift is about 60H(z) for 1ppm DMMP. In order to improve the selectivity of the sensor to the DMMP from other organic gases, different pore size zeolite films such as ZSM-5 zeolites and Ag+ modified ZSM-5 zeolites, are studied. The frequency shifts to another two organic gases such as acetone and ethanol at 1ppm concentration are observed for the sensor selectivity detection. The relationship between frequency shift and temperature for 1ppm DMMP has been studied. The best adsorption temperature is 303K and the desorption temperature is at the DMMP boiling point, 473K. Using principle component analysis (PCA); we can easily qualify and quantify the DMMP gas.

The development of the piezoelectric MEMS gas sensors is investigated for the application of low-level concentration gas molecules detection. In this work, the various types of gas sensors based on piezoelectricity are investigated extensively including their operating principle, besides their material parameters as well as the critical design parameters, the device structures, and their sensing materials including the polymers, carbon, metal–organic framework, and graphene.
Adsorption-Induced Surface Effects on the Dynamical Characteristics of Micromechanical Resonant Sensors for in Situ Real-Time Detection

Abstract:By incorporating modified Langmuir kinetic model, a novel slowly time-varying dynamical model of in situ micromechanical sensors is proposed to real-time monitor atomic or molecular adsorptions on the solid surface in a viscous fluid. First, Langmuir kinetic model is modified by the introduction of time-varying concentrations of analytes. Second, van der Waals (vdW), Coulomb, and biomolecular interactions for uncharged adsorbates, charged ones, and double-stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) are adopted, respectively, to develop the governing equation of time-varying vibrational systems with Hamilton's principle. It can be found that the adsorption-induced surface effects are incorporated into the dynamical equation of sensors due to real-time adsorptions. Third, the dynamical model is validated with the theoretical results of O atoms on Si (100) surface and the experimental data of dsDNAs interactions. The results show that the dynamical behavior is adsorption-induced slowly time-varying vibration due to the time-varying effective mass, stiffness, damping, and equilibrium positions of the microcantilevers. Moreover, comparing the modified Langmuir kinetic model with the unmodified model, the amplitude and phase hysteresis phenomena of frequency shift for resonant sensors can result in huge detection errors. In addition, the fluid effect can dramatically degrade the sensitivity and precision of real-time detection by several orders, which can provide a theoretical foundation to improve the detection sensitivity by reducing the fluid effect. The work demonstrates that it is essential to develop a time-varying dynamical model for in situ real-time label-free detection technique.
Real-Time Monitoring of Breath Biomarkers with A Magnetoelastic Contactless Gas Sensor: A Proof of Concept

Abstract:In the quest for effective gas sensors for breath analysis, magnetoelastic resonance-based gas sensors (MEGSs) are remarkable candidates. Thanks to their intrinsic contactless operation, they can be used as non-invasive and portable devices. However, traditional monitoring techniques are bound to slow detection, which hinders their application to fast bio-related reactions. Here we present a method for real-time monitoring of the resonance frequency, with a proof of concept for real-time monitoring of gaseous biomarkers based on resonance frequency. This method was validated with a MEGS based on a Metglass 2826 MB microribbon with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofiber electrospun functionalization. The device provided a low-noise (RMS = 1.7 Hz), fast (<2 min), and highly reproducible response to humidity (Δf = 46–182 Hz for 17–95% RH), ammonia (Δf = 112 Hz for 40 ppm), and acetone (Δf = 44 Hz for 40 ppm). These analytes are highly important in biomedical applications, particularly ammonia and acetone, which are biomarkers related to diseases such as diabetes. Furthermore, the capability of distinguishing between breath and regular air was demonstrated with real breath measurements. The sensor also exhibited strong resistance to benzene, a common gaseous interferent in breath analysis.
