Abstract:Sustainable development can only be achieved with an innovative improvement from the way we currently analyze, design, build and manage our urban spaces. Current digital analysis and design methods for cities, such as visibility analysis, deeply rely on mapping and modeling techniques. However, most methods fall short of depicting the real visual landscape in the urban realm and this could bring a significant error in visibility calculations which may lead to an improper decision for urban spaces. The technical development of light detection and ranging(LiDAR) technology introduces new approaches for urban study. LiDAR utilizes point clouds including thousands or even millions of georeferenced points, and thus can support 3-D digital representation of urban landscape with detailed information and high resolution. Besides the superiority in representing urban landscape, LiDAR point clouds also has a clear advantage in quantitative analysis and provides better visibility than traditional models. In this paper, we first introduced a novel approach to map visibility in the urban built environment involving vegetation data directly using airborne LiDAR point clouds. This approach calculates neighborhood statistics for occlusion detection. Then we presented 2 case with different scenarios showing how our approach can be used to obtain a precise visibility in an urban area in the Netherlands. At last, we discussed how point clouds based visibility models can be further explored and can better assist urban design.

Abstract:Human perception of urban landscape, which signifies to what extent urban landscape is appreciated by local dwellers, informs human-oriented policies that reinforce public participation. Yet, conventional studies on human perception of urban landscape are largely dependent on individual experience, which may restrict the co-production of knowledge that can be operationalized across spatial scales and sectors. In this study, we mapped human perception of urban landscape in Shanghai by leveraging an advanced deep-learning approach and street-view images. Specifically, the ResNet50 model was employed to map four critical perceptions, i.e., security, depression, vitality, and aesthetic, at parcel level. We further explored the relationship between human perception and land-use types. Our results show that highly urbanized area (Puxi district encompassed by the Inner Ring Road) is perceived as more secure and vital, but more depressing. Besides, human perception varies substantially across different land-use types, among which administrative and service land is favored with regard to all the four perception types. This study advances our understanding of urban landscape through the lens of human perception, and provides nuanced insights into steering human settlement towards sustainability by strategically promoting mixed land use.

Abstract:In this article, the authors has explored the feasibility of three-dimensional visibility analysis and visual quality computation via the aid of Google SketchUp and WebGIS, which may be beneficial for measurable evaluation of the environment in urban open spaces, and referential for urban planning and design to build an environment with better visual comfort. Considered for long-term significance, three-dimensional visibility analysis and visual quality computation are potential in enabling the quantitative analysis between urban open spaces and visual perception, providing appropriate standard for the evaluation of environment, and making the future planning and design rational and reasonable. Due to the easy access for entry-level programmer and the public, Google SketchUp and WebGIS were adopted as proper and efficient tools for three-dimensional visibility analysis in this research, which considerably decreased the programming development difficulty. Both SketchUp and WebGIS are thought to be well accepted by the public, as SketchUp has been popularized in three-dimensional modelling and WebGIS has been familiar as the form of websites for a long period, which may enable the dissemination of visibility analysis to the public. From a pilot study of progresses based on the past scholars’ researches, the authors developed an improved method for three-dimensional visibility analysis, by mathematically deriving the visual factors from the spatial relationship analysis of buildings, terrain and other geographical features. A few quantitative factors such as the distance, solid angle and visual field (a distribution of occupied solid angle in all directions) valued in spherical coordinate system were adopted as the basic units for visibility levels. Starting from the space prototype, the research has also focused on several aspects possibly associated with the visual effects in open spaces, including the openness, enclosure and ground coverage for edge; the distribution and dispersion for skyline and the visibility of individual building for landmark. For further comparison, the variances of those figures were also noticed during space scales changing for the prototype, in order to find possible connection or changing trend before and after. Moreover, experiments of three-dimensional visibility analysis have been designed and taken for real scenes to discover the similarities or differences between prototype and reality, and Piazza del Campo (Siena, Italy), Piazza San Marco (Venice, Italy) and Olomouc centre area (Olomouc, Czech) have been selected as the first group of candidates. Those would be the possible references for making quantitative assessments in real scenes via collection of visual factors, enabling the comparison of similarities and differences among various urban open spaces.

Abstract:Virtual city is the frontier field of 3D city geographic information system research. For this reason, first, how to build a city 3D landscape is discussed and researched. At the same time, it outlines the development situation and basic principles of city 3D simulation and then analyzes the establishment of 3D city. There are two methods of landscape which focuses on the realization methods of 3D scene modeling, dynamic simulation and real-time driving, then presents the role, significance and development prospects of the dynamic simulation technology of urban 3D landscape and summarizes the 3D simulation besides real-time driving of the city. GIS combined with the application possibilities and development direction produced an application example of urban 3D landscape dynamic simulation. From the perspective of comprehensive quantitative evaluation of landscape vision, a comprehensive evaluation metric system based on basic visual elements and landscape vision sensitivity is designed, and a comprehensive evaluation method of landscape vision based on GIS spatial analysis and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process is proposed. From both an overall and a single-factor perspective, this research objectively exposes the distribution characteristics of landscape visual resources and their affecting elements. The comparison with the urban landscape evaluation results based on user scores verifies the reliability and advancement of this method, which is a quantitative description and evaluation of the landscape. Visual resources provide a new research idea and research method and also provide an objective reference and decision support for the comprehensive development planning of scenic spots and the development and protection of urban landscapes.

Abstract:Visibility determination is a key requirement in a wide range of national and urban applications, such as national security, landscape management, and urban design. Mobile LiDAR point clouds can depict the urban built environment with a high level of details and accuracy. However, few three-dimensional visibility approaches have been developed for the street-level point-cloud data. Accordingly, an approach based on mobile LiDAR point clouds has been developed to map the three-dimensional visibility at the street level. The method consists of five steps: voxelization of point-cloud data, construction of lines-of-sight, construction of sectors of sight, construction of three-dimensional visible space, and calculation of volume index. The proposed approach is able to automatically measure the volume of visible space and openness at any viewpoint along a street. This approach has been applied to three study areas. The results indicated that the proposed approach enables accurate simulation of visible space as well as high-resolution (1 m × 1 m) mapping of the visible volume index. The proposed approach can make a contribution to the improvement of urban planning and design processes that aim at developing more sustainable built environments.

Abstract:The evaluation of urban open spaces plays an important role in landscape design, urban management and public security. However, few three-dimensional openness approaches with high accuracy and applicability to multiple data models have been developed. A method has been developed to measure the openness of an arbitrary location in an urban space accurately. This method is based mainly on the geometric subdivision of 3D space. First, a complete visual sphere was constructed with the viewpoint as the centre. The visual sphere was subsequently uniformly subdivided by multiple lines of sight at certain horizontal and vertical angle intervals, generating multiple discrete visual difference elements (VDEs). Finally, the specific visible volumes in each VDE were calculated separately to accumulate the all-visible volumes. The visible space index (VSI) was defined as the ratio of all visible space volumes to the visual sphere. The results indicate that the proposed method can accurately calculate the volume of visible space at any location, and the corresponding VSI reflects the difference of visible space in urban environments under different terrain conditions. The proposed method is expected to provide technical support for large-scale urban openness mapping, consequently contributing to the unified evaluation of urban space.

Abstract:Visibility is an essential factor in urban design, especially within the scenic area. Viewshed analysis, a Geographic Information System (GIS) based method, is commonly used to evaluate the urban design. However, it's hard to be directly applied to aid the urban design in advance. The paper presents a approach to take an active part in the urban design with visibility analysis. A set of GIS-based spatial analyses are integrated to calculate the optimized height of buildings. The generated result could be used as the reference to guide the plan and design. It is significant to improve the rationality of the urban design. The paper introduced the case study of Lake Taihu Bay, China. The entire design process showed that the visibility analysis is an effective method in the project with complex terrain.

Abstract:Amid China’s high-speed urbanization, the lack of urban landscape and homogenization of urban image are becoming increasingly serious, prompting discussion on how to preserve the natural urban landscape. This study extends the existing landscape assessment model to evaluate the urban hillscape of the Lishui urban area of Nanjing over the past 50 years. First, a landscape quality analysis is conducted based on raster images, and a landscape quality map of the study area is drawn. Then, a visibility analysis of the site is conducted, key observation points (KOPs) are screened using a digital surface model, and the visual magnitude of each KOP is quantitatively calculated. Finally, the visual impact scores of the mountains in the site are synthesized. The results show that the model can accurately quantify the visual impact of historical mountain views. The following conclusions are drawn (1) The visual quality of the landscape in the area has improved as the urban area has spreads out. (2) The viewshed and magnitude of the area are trending downward over time. (3) The Chengnan area’s visual impact score increased by 25.7%, but that of the Tuanshan and Chengzhong areas decreased by 48% and 26.9%, respectively. This study presents a spatial decision support system that can obtain better landscape assessment results with more accessible open-source data, and can be used for historical landscape evaluation. By comparing the characteristics and trends of urban hillscapes in different historical periods, this study’s landscape assessment model can help managers better understand the impact of development on urban intentions and make better decisions.

Abstract:Monitoring urban expansion and greenspace change is an urgent need for planning and decision-making. This paper presents a methodology integrating Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hybrid classifier to undertake this kind of work using a sequence of multi-sensor SPOT images (SPOT-2,3,5) and Sentinel-2A data from 1996 to 2016 in Hangzhou City, which is the central metropolis of the Yangtze River Delta in China. In this study, orthorectification was first applied on the SPOT and Sentinel-2A images to guarantee precise geometric correction which outperformed the conventional polynomial transformation method. After pre-processing, PCA and hybrid classifier were used together to enhance and extract change information. Accuracy assessment combining stratified random and user-defined plots sampling strategies was performed with 930 reference points. The results indicate reasonable high accuracies for four periods. It was further revealed that the proposed method yielded higher accuracy than that of the traditional post-classification comparison approach. On the whole, the developed methodology provides the effectiveness of monitoring urban expansion and green space change in this study, despite the existence of obvious confusions that resulted from compound factors.

Abstract:Urban landscape is closely related to human living environment. Optimizing urban landscapes can promote urban vitality and quality, which is the latest goal of modern urban sustainable development. However, compared with studies at macro-level in large areas (i.e. cities) or micro-level in small areas (i.e. buildings), the fine research on quantifying urban landscape characteristics in large areas are insufficient, though it has stronger linkages with reality and planning. This paper proposed a quantification analysis system for regional urban landscape studies with block as the study unit and built on three aspects, including city plan, pattern of building forms and urban land use. Spatial and contrastive analysis were adopted to portray urban landscape in 15 typical Chinese cities using geographical open data. Urban landscape in metropolises of China had clear spatial regularity with the distance away from the main center. Besides, most of urban landscape indicators had more than one center and the main center was matched with the area of highest land price and geometric center in most of metropolises, and the attraction of sub-centers still had significant gap with the main center. Meantime, different cities may indeed display distinctive spatial signatures due to their different development conditions, for example, the landscape features of Guangzhou and Suzhou did not have superiority compared with other cities at similar level. More importantly, quantitative study scope and dimension of fine urban landscape were expanded and a uniform and comparable standard for block-level urban landscape analysis in large area was established.

Abstract:As street imagery and big data techniques evolve, opportunities for refined urban governance emerge. This study delves into effective methods for urban perception evaluation and street refinement governance by using street view data and deep learning. Employing DeepLabV3+ and VGGNet models, we analyzed street view images from Nanshan District, Shenzhen, identifying critical factors that shape residents' spatial perceptions, such as urban greenery, road quality, and infrastructure. The findings indicate that robust vegetation, well-maintained roads, and well-designed buildings significantly enhance positive perceptions, whereas detractors like fences reduce quality. Furthermore, Moran's I statistical analysis and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models highlight spatial heterogeneity and the clustering of perceptions, underscoring the need for location-specific planning. The study also points out that complex street networks in accessible areas enhance living convenience and environmental satisfaction. This research shows that integrating street view data with deep learning provides valuable tools for urban planners and policymakers, aiding in the development of more precise and effective urban governance strategies to foster more livable, resilient, and responsive urban environments.

Abstract:Visibility analysis is a crucial geographic information processing method, used to assess the observable spatial range from a particular location under specific conditions. It has broad applications, such as urban planning, landscape design and environmental research. Laser scanning provides detailed and accurate 3D data for visibility analysis, called point cloud. However, certain deficiencies still exist in current point cloud-based visibility analysis methods. Few methods are developed from indoor perspective and the influence of point cloud void is rarely considered. Firstly, indoor viewpoints are generated based on the windows extracted from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point cloud and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) point cloud is used to provide 3D representation of the environment around the viewpoint. Then, a half-sphere viewshed is created for each indoor viewpoint to analyze the visible spatial range. In this step, a novel line-of-sight correction method is proposed based on the semantic information from UAV point cloud, to correct the biased observation distance resulted from point cloud voids. Lastly, the volume of visible space is calculated based on the corrected viewshed image, to evaluate the visibility of each indoor viewpoint. Our method is validated on two datasets. The results indicate that our method enables more accurate simulation of visible space compared with previous studies by considering the effect of point cloud void. The proposed method can support the urban design from the perspective of indoor visual perception and accurate calculation of other visual factors in visual quality evaluation.

Abstract:The landscape visual effect of a city, which is generated by its long-term development, is an important index in city planning. In this study, we build a quantitative evaluation and remote sensing estimation scheme of landscape visual effect. The study contains two main steps. First, utilizing the Elo rating system and in situ sampled panoramic pictures, the quantitative assessment of the city landscape visual effect was carried out. Then, the landscape visual effect estimation model was built and applied to Landsat remote sensing image to generate the spatial distribution of landscape visual effect in Zhengzhou city, 2017. At last, the effect of different combination of land use and elevation to the landscape visual effect was discussed. The results showed the following: (1) the Elo rating system is an effective method to quantitatively evaluate the city landscape visual effect; (2) the landscape visual effect remote sensing estimation model had a good performance, with the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of the model are less than 0.05 and 80, respectively; (3) the landscape visual effect score of Zhengzhou city, 2017, was high in the southwest and low in the northeast; (4) different land use situation and average surface elevation had a complex influence on the landscape visual effect.

Exploring the Long-Term Changes in Visual Attributes of Urban Green Spaces Using Point Clouds

Abstract:The visual attributes of urban green spaces influence people's perceptions, preferences, and behavioural activities. While many studies have established correlations between landscape perception and visual attributes, they often focus on specific timeframes and overlook dynamic changes in the spatial form of urban green spaces. This study aims to explore the long-term changes in the visual attributes of urban green spaces. We propose a method to quantitatively analyse changes in visual attributes using point clouds to simulate visual interfaces. Using an unmanned aerial vehicle, we conducted a five-axis tilt photography survey of Qinglvyuan Park in Nanjing, China, in September 2018 and September 2023. Point cloud models were generated for the two periods, and five visual attribute indicators, openness (OP), depth variance (DV), green view ratio (GVR), sky view ratio (SVR), and skyline complexity (SC), were analysed for long-term changes. The results indicate that OP, DV, and SVR decreased after five years, while GVR increased. The maximum increase in GVR was 26.6%, and the maximum decrease in OP was 12.8%. There is a positive correlation between GVR and its change (d_GVR). Conversely, there are negative correlations between SC and its change (d_SC), as well as between SVR and d_GVR. Tree growth emerged as a primary factor influencing changes in the visual attributes of urban green spaces. This study highlights the importance of adopting a long-term and dynamic perspective in visual landscape studies, as well as in landscape design and maintenance practices. Future research on predicting long-term changes in the visual attributes of urban green spaces should focus on understanding the relationships between tree properties and environmental conditions.

Abstract:3D urban landscape visualization is a key technology in digital city construction. Based on the research and analysis of the three-dimensional space of the urban landscape space, the three-dimensional space can not only allow users to intuitively perceive the development of the city. It also enables decision makers, planners, and users to more intuitively, objectively, and rationally recognize and understand the current urban development and planning design. Defining the data content of the 3D city landscape image model is the basis for creating the 3D city image model. It not only guides producers to select data, but also serves as the basis for sharing data between different applications. With the continuous development of society, the number of people living in rural areas migrating to cities to make a living has increased rapidly, leading to the growing problem of "urban congestion" in many areas. In order to effectively solve these problems, "smart cities" came into being. It quickly triggered a boom in global urban development. Based on a survey of the state-of-the-art in the field of 3D modeling and engineering design visualization, this paper analyzes 3D rendering acceleration algorithms used to speed up rendering and improve the quality of 3D design. By utilizing BSP technology, transparent objects can be drawn in any order in any scene, which solves the problem of incorrectly occluding transparent objects during rendering. This paper also applies collision detection technology, which enhances the user's immersive feeling when roaming the landscape. In the 3D reconstruction process, it can complete the column and wall recognition for the test image with complex composition. Its recognition rate for various urban features has reached more than 80%.

Abstract:With the development and widespread adoption of smart machines, researchers across various disciplines and fields are exploring the contributions of computers and intelligent machines to human science and society through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this study, we investigated the potential applications of artificial intelligence and multi-source big data in the selection and design of urban greenways, using the city of Nanjing as a case study. Utilizing computer vision technology and the DeepLabV3+ neural network model, we analyzed over 320,000 street view images and 530,000 fine-grained urban data points from Nanjing. We also trained the place space material quantification model using the Street Space Greening Structure (S.S.G.S) dataset. This dataset not only achieved high-precision semantic segmentation but also surpassed previous datasets in predicting greenery at the street level. The performance metrics for this model are as follows: MIoU is 0.6344, Recall is 0.7287, and Precision is 0.8074. Through Robust regression, we identified several micro and macro-level factors influencing the Panoramic View Green View Index (PVGVI). The results indicate that multiple factors have significant positive or negative effects on PVGVI. This research not only provides new decision-making tools for landscape architecture and urban planning but also opens new avenues for applying artificial intelligence in urban environmental studies.

This study delves into Nanjing’s five districts, employing advanced image semantic segmentation based on machine learning techniques to segment and extract green vegetation from Baidu Street View (BSV) images. Leveraging spatial syntax, it analyzes street network data sourced from OpenStreetMap (OSM) to quantify the accessibility values of individual streets. Subsequent overlay analyses uncover areas characterized by high accessibility but inadequate street greening, underscoring the pressing need for street greening enhancements in highly accessible zones, thereby providing valuable decision-making support for urban planners. Key findings revealed that (1) the green view index (GVI) of sampled points within the study area ranged from 15.79% to 38.17%, with notably better street greening conditions observed in the Xuanwu District; (2) the Yuhua District exhibited comparatively lower pedestrian and commuting accessibility than the Xuanwu District; and (3) approximately 139.62 km of roads in the study area demonstrated good accessibility but lacked sufficient greenery visibility, necessitating immediate improvements in their green landscapes. This research utilizes the potential of novel data and methodologies, along with their practical applications in planning and design practices. Notably, this study integrates street greenery visibility with accessibility to explore, from a human-centered perspective, the tangible benefits of green landscapes. These insights highlight the opportunity for local governments to advance urban planning and design by implementing more human-centered green space policies, ultimately promoting societal equity.

Abstract:Nowadays, the population has been overgrowing due to urbanization, yielding many severe problems in the urban area, including traffic congestion, unbalanced distribution of urban hotspots, air pollution and so on. Due to the uncertainty of the urban environment, it always needs to integrate experts' domain knowledge into solving these issues. In recent years, the visual analytics method has been widely used to assist domain experts in solving urban problems with its intuitiveness, interactivity and interpretability. In this survey, we first introduce the background of urban computing, present the motivation of visual analytics in the urban area and point out the characteristics of visual analytics methods. Second, we introduce the most frequently used urban data, analyse the main properties and provide an overview on how to use these data. Thereafter, we propose our taxonomy for visual analytics in the urban area and illustrate the taxonomy. The taxonomy provides four levels for visual analytics on urban data from a new perspective based on the four stages in data mining. Four levels from our taxonomy include: descriptive analytics, diagnostic analytics, predictive analytics and prescriptive analytics. Finally, we conclude this survey by discussing the limitations of the existing related works and the challenges to visual analytics in the urban area.

Abstract:Developing effective visual analytics systems demands care in characterization of domain problems and integration of visualization techniques and computational models. Urban visual analytics has already achieved remarkable success in tackling urban problems and providing fundamental services for smart cities. To promote further academic research and assist the development of industrial urban analytics systems, we comprehensively review urban visual analytics studies from four perspectives. In particular, we identify 8 urban domains and 22 types of popular visualization, analyze 7 types of computational method, and categorize existing systems into 4 types based on their integration of visualization techniques and computational models. We conclude with potential research directions and opportunities.
Optimal visual perception in land-use planning and design based on landsenses ecology

Abstract:Land-use planning and design (LPD) is one of the most critical passways toward sustainable development. LPD without thorough considerations can cause many problems, such as disharmony between people's perception and nature, the chaos of spatial patterns, and the misuse of land resources. Landsenses ecology, a discipline based on natural elements and people's perception, provide scientific basis to guide LPD. Here we summarized the state-of-the-art concept of optimal visual perception based on conventional optical theory and contemporary visualization technology. Instead of solely using an artistic design perspective to sum up experience, we combined human binocular visual angle and distance with the field of view (FOV) of cell phone cameras to determine an optimal visual perception. We explained the rationality of the concept of optimal visual perception with three examples, located at the Institute of Urban Environmental (IUE) from Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Welcoming-Guests Pine on Huangshan Mountain, and the Sunlight Rock of Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, China, respectively. Both landsenses involving the IUE and Welcoming-Guests Pine satisfy the required conditions for optimal visual perception, whereas the Sunlight Rock shows the chaos of near and far landscapes, which is not compatible with the optimal visual perception. At the end of this paper, we provide pieces of advice on applying optimal visual perception to land-use planners and architects as well as sustainability scholars.
