Abstract:Background: Breast cancer patients experience a range of disease- and treatment-related symptoms that seriously threaten their quality of life. Virtual reality (VR), an emerging complementary and integrative therapy, has been increasingly applied in clinical practice. However, there is insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of VR-based interventions on symptom management in breast cancer patients. Objective: This article aimed to systematically examine the effects of VR on breast cancer-related symptom management. Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, CNKI, Wan Fang, and VIP databases were comprehensively searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs published up to April 10, 2021. Studies using VR-based interventions to manage breast cancer-related symptoms were included. Two investigators independently reviewed and extracted data and evaluated methodological quality. RevMan 5.3 was used for meta-analysis, and heterogeneity was evaluated using Higgins' I2 (%) statistic. Results: Eight RCTs and 6 quasi-RCTs with 797 participants were included. Virtual reality-based interventions significantly improved symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, cognitive function, and shoulder range of motion in breast cancer patients, but no significant improvements in grip and upper extremity function were observed. Conclusion: Virtual reality-based interventions had a positive effect on symptom management for breast cancer patients. Implications for practice: Health professionals, especially nurses, can apply VR in clinical practice to reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients. More studies are needed to draw higher quality conclusions and explore the best interventions and cost-effectiveness of VR.

Abstract:Background. This meta-analysis summarizes the results from recent studies that examined the use of virtual reality (VR)–based interventions on health-related outcomes in patients with cancer, and quantitatively evaluates the efficacy of VR-based interventions. Findings of this meta-analysis can provide direction for future symptom management research. Methods. The search terms included a combination of “virtual reality” OR “virtual environment” OR “head-mounted display” with “oncology” OR “cancer.” Three databases (Medline, PubMed, and CAJ Full-text Database), one search engine (Google Scholar), and the website of ResearchGate, covering the period from December 2013 to May 15, 2019, and including articles published in both English and Chinese, were searched. Data synthesis used the RevMan 5.3 to generate pooled estimates of effect size. Results. A total of 6 empirical studies met the eligibility criteria. VR-based interventions had statistically significant effects on reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, and cognitive function, whereas statistically significant benefit was observed for fatigue ( Z = 2.76, P = .006). Conclusion. Most recent studies have primarily examined VR-based interventions for symptom management in the acute stages of cancer care. However, the management of late and long-term side effects is central to cancer survivorship care. There is burgeoning empirical support for further research to evaluate the efficacy of VR-based interventions in cancer rehabilitation.

Abstract:Objectives To determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR)-based intervention on the symptoms and rehabilitation management in patients with breast cancer. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Study selection We included all eligible randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies (published in English and Chinese). Participants Patients with breast cancer (≥18 years) undergoing cancer treatment. Interventions Any intervention administered to improve the symptoms and rehabilitation of patients with breast cancer. The control group was given conventional care. Outcomes All outcomes were as follows: pain, fatigue, anxiety, depressive symptoms, cognitive function, and range of motion of upper limb in patients with breast cancer. Data sources We searched PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and SinoMed, four electronic databases, covering the database establishment period to January 2022. Review methods Two reviewers independently extracted content and data consistent with the prespecified framework and assessed risk bias. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool data across trials. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager V.5.4. Results A total of eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this study. The combined effect size showed that VR was positive for improving patients’ anxiety(standard mean differenc (SMD)=−2.07, 95% CI= (−3.81 to −0.34), I 2 =95%) and abduction of upper limbs (MD=15.54, 95% CI= (12.79 to 18.29), I 2 =0%), but fatigue (SMD=−0.92, 95% CI= (−4.47 to 2.62), I 2 =99%) was not. Qualitative analysis showed VR improved patients' depressive symptoms, pain and cognitive function. Conclusions VR technology has a good effect on symptoms and rehabilitation management of patients with breast cancer, but the quality of evidence is low, and the sample size is small. To date, there are few intervention studies, therefore, giving precise recommendation or conclusion is difficult. We have a favourable view of this, and more clinical studies are needed in the future to improve the credibility of the results.

Abstract:Copy number variation (CNV) is considered an important genetic variation, contributing to many economically important traits in the chicken. Although CNVs can be detected using a comparative genomic hybridization array, the high-density SNP array has provided an alternative way to identify CNVs in the chicken. In the current study, a chicken 60K SNP BeadChip was used to identify CNVs in two distinct chicken genetic lines (White Leghorn and dwarf) using the PENNCNV program. A total of 209 CNV regions were identified, distributing on chromosomes 1-22 and 24-28 and encompassing 13.55 Mb (1.42%) of chicken autosomal genome area. Three of seven selected CNVs (73.2% individuals) were completely validated by quantitative PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the chicken identifying CNVs using a SNP array. Identification of 190 new identified CNVs illustrates the feasibility of the chicken 60K SNP BeadChip to detect CNVs in the chicken, which lays a solid foundation for future analyses of associations of CNVs with economically important phenotypes in chickens.
Effects of virtual reality on physical, cognitive, and psychological outcomes in cancer rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: To systematically examine and summarize the current evidence regarding the effects of virtual reality (VR) on physical, cognitive, and psychological outcomes in cancer rehabilitation. Methods: Six bioscience and engineering databases were searched. Two independent reviewers screened the titles and abstracts of 2397 records and retrieved 25 full-text articles. Inclusion criteria included patients with a current or previous diagnosis of cancer; VR was used as an intervention for physical, cognitive, or psychological impairments and functional limitations; and clinical trials with at least two arms and with both pre- and post-intervention assessments. Reviewers assessed methodological quality using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Results: Seventeen studies including 799 patients with cancer were identified. Within-group pooled analysis indicated that patients demonstrated significant improvement in pain (P < 0.001), fatigue (P < 0.001), anxiety (P < 0.001), upper extremity function (P < 0.001), and quality of life (P = 0.008) after VR intervention. Between-group pooled analysis indicated significant improvements with VR in pain (P = 0.004), anxiety (P < 0.001), and upper extremity function (P < 0.001) compared with the control. Three studies reported the positive effects of VR on cognition. Conclusions: VR demonstrates promising effects in physical, cognitive, and psychological aspects of patients with cancer. VR can be incorporated into a comprehensive cancer rehabilitation program to alleviate impairments and functional limitations.

Abstract:In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has become an interesting alternative to traditional exposure-based therapies for many symptoms. VR involves immersion in a computer-generated virtual environment that minimizes avoidance and facilitates emotional processing. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate evidence on the intervention effect of VR on anxiety, depression, fatigue, and pain. The research strategy of this systematic review included three electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect) based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Published quantitative studies from 2000 to 2020 were identified, which examined the effect of VR intervention on four different symptoms related to symptoms experienced by cancer patients. Quality assessments, data extractions, and analysis were completed on all included studies. A total of 882 titles and abstracts were screened, and 23 studies were included in the review. The studies were grouped according to the symptoms: anxiety and depression, fatigue, and pain. The review showed that VR intervention is more effective compared with the control (i.e., standard care) for anxiety, depression, fatigue, and pain. VR can reduce effectively these symptoms in different contexts and diseases, including cancer. The evidence suggests that there is value in exploring this intervention as a potential crossover treatment for these symptoms in patients. This study contributes to evidence that distraction is an effective symptom management mechanism. The findings are congruent with the theoretical framework, supporting the premise that VR, as an emotion-focused distraction intervention, decreases the severity of these symptoms.

Abstract:Pain is the most common cancer-related symptom, but it is often undertreated. Telemedicine is widely used in cancer treatment, but its effectiveness is uncertain.We aimed to evaluate the impact of telemedicine intervention on pain in patients with cancer.Methodological quality and risk-of-bias evaluation were conducted, and the sources of heterogeneity were explored through subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis.PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and clinical trial databases were searched up to 16 August 2022. Randomized controlled trials of the impact of telemedicine intervention regarding pain in patients with cancer were included, and the results related to pain were extracted.Twenty-one randomized controlled trials were selected from 1810 articles. A total of 1454 patients received telemedicine interventions, and 2213 received conventional medical services. Telemedical intervention had a positive effect on improving pain intensity [standard mean deviation (SMD) = -0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.49 to -0.06, p = 0.01] and pain interference (SMD = -0.41, 95% CI: -0.54 to -0.28, p < 0.00001), with statistical difference between the two groups. The subgroup analysis results showed that the telemedicine subgroup based on an application (SMD = -0.54, 95% CI: -0.91 to -0.18, p = 0.004) and the subgroup with intervention time ⩾ 6 months (SMD = -0.33, 95% CI: -0.52 to -0.13, p = 0.001), both demonstrated significant improvement regarding pain intensity, with significant statistical difference between the two groups. When the follow-up time was ⩾ 6 months, there was no significant difference (SMD = -0.24, 95% CI: -0.55 to 0.07, p = 0.13).Compared with conventional medical services, telemedicine intervention can improve the pain of patients with cancer and is effective and acceptable regarding symptom monitoring. Integrating telemedicine interventions into cancer pain management may be a feasible option. Abstract:Reliable and QoS-aware multimedia delivery is one of the most important requirements to satisfy end user needs. IEEE 802.11 networks have become one of the most popular Internet access methods owing to their low-cost and fast connection speed. Multicasting is a transmission technique that can significantly increase network efficiency through the simultaneous delivery of the same multimedia content to multiple multicast group members. IEEE 802.11 describes several multicast protocols targeted to increase the robustness of audio and video delivery. Some researchers have investigated the performance of such multicast protocols in terms of their achievable throughput. However, for a better understanding of the suitability of the protocols for a QoS-aware multimedia transmission, an in-depth analysis of the achievable delay is needed. This study provides a detailed delay analysis and describes analytical models for estimating the average achievable delay of IEEE 802.11 multicast protocols co-existing with legacy stations. The proposed analytical models are compared against simulation results under various conditions and parameter configurations. The simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed models.

Abstract:Background: Appropriately selected complementary therapies, such as virtual reality (VR) and active video games (AVG), provide support to young patients during the process of cancer treatment. Therefore, this systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to analyze the effects of VR and AVG on fear, physical functions, and quality of life. Methods: A systematic search was performed independently in Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library electronic databases for relevant randomized controlled and crossover studies. From a total of 5,963 records, 11 met the inclusion criteria. After full-text screening two publications were excluded, yet six studies were included in the quantitative analysis because three studies had a large discrepancy in their measured outcomes. For methodological quality assessments, the RoB2 software program was used, while RevMan 5.4.1 was used for statistical analysis and meta-analysis. Standard Mean Difference (SMD) outcome measures were used for the analysis. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic with a cut-off value of 50% considering intervention and outcome measures. Results: Our systematic review includes six randomized controlled studies and three randomized crossover studies. The participants represented both sexes and were children and adolescents (<18 years old) with a diagnosis of cancer. The analysis of the results allows for a careful conclusion that VR has the potential to become an accessory tool in rehabilitation and oncologic treatment. All of the included studies noted a significant advantage of this intervention. Conclusion: VR has the potential to be an effective and important tool in the oncologic treatment of children. VR immerses the patient, and as a result, produces a distraction that effectively reduces pain associated with standard oncologic care procedures in children. However, this systematic review and meta-analysis highlights the need for more research into the use of VR as support for pediatric oncologic care. Abstract:Patients with breast cancer endure high levels of psychological and physical pain. Virtual reality (VR) may be an acceptable, safe intervention to alleviate the negative emotions and pain of patients with cancer We aimed to test the long-term effects of VR on psychological distress and quality of life (QOL) with traditional care in Chinese patients with breast cancer. We also explored the intervention mechanism and the acceptability of VR A total of 327 eligible participants were randomly assigned to a VR intervention group or a control group. The Distress Thermometer, QLQ-C30 (Quality of Life Questionnaire version 3.0), and Virtual Reality Symptom Questionnaire were assessed at baseline, postintervention (3 mo), and follow-up (6 mo). Abstract:Background: Cancer and its treatments cause symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and emotional distress, which affect the quality of life of patients at different stages of cancer. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising alternative for addressing these symptoms by immersing patients in a virtual environment that isolates them from reality. Objective: To describe the existing evidence on the use of VR to improve pain, fatigue, and emotional distress in people with cancer at different stages of the cancer trajectory. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. Search was conducted in PubMed and CINAHL until October 2023. Results: Twenty-three primary studies related to the study topic were identified, and the following information was collected: type of VR (immersive vs nonimmersive) used in oncology services, purpose (distraction, training, or relaxation), devices used (head-mounted display, headset, or virtual controller), and the environment simulated (natural environment, skill games, or educational environment). The effects of VR on pain, fatigue, and emotional distress are described, highlighting its ability to mitigate these symptoms in the short term. Conclusions: Virtual reality has been shown to be an effective technique for reducing pain, fatigue, and emotional distress in people with cancer in the short term. Implications for practice: Nurses can use VR as a complementary tool to promote virtual environments that improve the care for and therefore the quality of life of people with cancer.
Application of virtual reality for supportive care in cancer patients: a systematic review

Abstract:Background: In recent years, virtual reality (VR) technology has been widely used to support cancer patients with physical, emotional, and functional needs. This systematic review aimed to investigate the application of VR in the supportive care of cancer patients. Method: This systematic review was conducted in 2024. In this study, various databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, Ovid, IEEE Xplore, and ProQuest were searched, and quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies which were in English and published up to 20th May 2024 were included. The keywords consisted of "virtual reality," "supportive care," and "cancer". Studies were assessed in terms of quality and risk of bias using standard tools, and results were analyzed and reported narratively. Results: A total of 33 articles were reviewed. VR interventions, primarily using fully immersive head-mounted displays, were associated with significant reductions in anxiety, pain, and fatigue. VR also improved mood, relaxation, and overall quality of life, and some studies noted enhanced vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure. This technology could be used along with other medical interventions. Both patients and healthcare providers reported high level of satisfaction with VR, and appreciated its ease of use and therapeutic benefits. However, some technical barriers, like inadequate visual performance and realism, were reported. Conclusion: VR demonstrates substantial potential benefits as a supportive care tool for cancer patients, effectively addressing their psychological, physiological, psychosocial needs. Despite technical challenges, high level of user satisfaction and benefits underscore the need for further research to optimize VR interventions in cancer care.

Background: Recent advancements in the field of medical technology have illuminated that the implementation of virtual reality interventions can be highly effective in managing cancer-related fatigue. Moreover, this innovative intervention has demonstrated a substantial improvement in patients' overall well-being and daily functioning. Thus, it represents a promising alternative to traditional pharmacological treatments by effectively addressing symptoms and enhancing quality of life. Therefore, the integration of this approach signifies a significant advancement in patient care. Nevertheless, despite the ongoing efforts to diversify non-pharmacological treatments, pharmacological interventions are still the predominant method for managing cancer-related fatigue. Aim: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality in cancer-related fatigue management, and to explore the main side effects of immersive virtual reality. Methods: This systematic review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards. Several online databases were used to find eligible studies in peer-reviewed journals relevant to the study keywords. Specifically, the included studies were systematic reviews and clinical trials that used immersive virtual reality-based intervention among adult patients with cancer and suffering from cancer-related fatigue. As well as were published in the English language from 2014 to 2024. As well as, three researchers independently contributed to study selections, data extraction, and study evaluations from different aspects: including quality assessment, risk of bias, and study synthesis. Results: After an extensive and comprehensive search, a total of ten published studies were included in this review study; 6 articles were quantitative clinical trial studies, and the other 4 were systematic review and meta-analysis studies. The quality of 6 included clinical trials was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool for quantitative studies, the overall result showed that 33.3% of studies rated with moderate quality, no study was rated with low quality, and (66.7%) studies rated as high-quality studies. As well, the quality assessment of all review studies showed that all included systematic reviews and meta-analyses with a low risk of bias and high to moderate power of evidence. The result of this extensive and comprehensive review showed that immersive virtual reality has a significant effect in reducing cancer-related fatigue, however, still, there is a significant variation in the employment of immersive Virtual Reality protocols for cancer symptom management worldwide. Conclusion: Immersive virtual reality is an effective non-pharmacological intervention in reducing and controlling cancer-related fatigue among patients with various types of cancer, as well as being an affordable, cost-effective approach. Nevertheless, there remains a notable gap in the existing literature concerning virtual reality protocols, associated side effects, and the underlying mechanisms by which immersive virtual reality alleviates fatigue. Therefore, further research studies are warranted to address these gaps and advance our understanding in these areas.

Methods. Ninety-eight patients with breast cancer were recruited in this study. These patients were randomly assigned to the VR-CALM group or the care as usual (CAU) group. All patients were evaluated by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast cancer patient (FACT-B), Distress Thermometer (DT), Concerns About Recurrence Scale (CARS), Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and The Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) before and after VR-CALM or CAU application to BCs. We compared the differences in all these scores between the VR-CALM group and the control group. Results. Patients in the VR-CALM group showed a significant decrease in levels of distress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and fatigue (t = −6.829, t = −5.819, t = −2.094, t = −3.031, t = −10.082, P ≤ 0.001 , 0.001, 0.05, 0.01, 0.001, respectively) and had higher level of quality of life (t = 8.216, P ≤ 0.001 ) compared with the CAU group after intervention. And postintervention patients in VR-CALM group compared with preintervention showed lower level of distress and remarkable improvement of QOL (t = 11.521, t = −10.379, P ≤ 0.001 , 0.001). The preintervention questionnaire revealed no significant between-group differences regarding distress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, fatigue, and quality of life. Conclusion. VR-CALM is a psychotherapy tailored to the needs of patients with breast cancer. This research innovatively used VR-based CALM intervention to improve psychological and chronic symptoms in BCs. The results of the present study indicate that VR-CALM has salutary effects on the improvement of QOL and relieves psychological distress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and fatigue in BCs.

Abstract:During breast cancer treatment, patients face various physical and psychological problems. However, a promising solution has been found in the use of virtual reality as a tool to address these problems. Our goal was to identify the most common problems and symptoms during treatment, as well as investigate the effectiveness of virtual reality in addressing them. We also set out to determine if there are any disadvantages associated with using this system. To this end, we conducted a systematic review using a non-experimental, descriptive, and qualitative-quantitative approach. 20 open access articles were selected in the Scopus database, following established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results revealed that anxiety and pain are the most common symptoms experienced during breast cancer treatment. Regarding the effectiveness of virtual reality to treat these symptoms, differences were found: a significant impact on anxiety was observed (p < 0.001), but no significant impact on pain was found (p < 0.07). In addition, only three studies mentioned the possible presence of cyberdisease as an obstacle. In conclusion, anxiety and pain are the most common symptoms during breast cancer treatment. Virtual reality shows high efficacy in managing anxiety, but its effectiveness in pain management is limited. In addition, technological advances appear to have reduced the occurrence of cyberdisease and associated drawbacks, although little information is available in the studies reviewed.

Abstract:What's New? Virtual reality as a therapeutic modality holds significant promise for helping cancer patients manage pain and anxiety. Guidelines on application, duration, and other factors, however, are lacking, and little is known about which specific protocols are the most effective. Here, the authors performed literature reviews to investigate the effectiveness of various virtual reality interventions carried out in patients during chemotherapy sessions. Analyses indicate that overall, virtual reality helps relieve anxiety, pain, asthenia, and stress and is a viable complement to conventional therapies. Additional research is needed to identify virtual reality treatment protocols that provide the greatest benefit for cancer patients. Virtual reality is on the rise and is currently postulated as one of the most innovative and promising techniques in the management of pain and anxiety in cancer patients, in the face of painful processes or the stress involved in chemotherapy treatment. The objective has been to find out the effectiveness of virtual reality in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Several literature reviews were conducted between November 2023 and January 2024 in the Pubmed, Web of Science and PEDro databases. The keywords "virtual reality," "cancer," "oncology," "exercise" and "chemotherapy" were combined using the Boolean operator AND. 641 manuscripts were selected as potential manuscripts and after elimination of duplicates and application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, six articles comprised the final review sample. Virtual reality has proven to be an effective technique in reducing the anxiety, pain, asthenia and stress suffered by patients diagnosed with cancer and chemotherapy treatment. The distraction generated by this therapeutic modality, with a wide range of scenarios, helps to reduce the painful perception and worry of these procedures. However, there are no standard application guidelines or application protocols that demonstrate the superiority of one technique over another. Virtual reality could be a valid complementary tool in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy, showing positive results in pain reduction, anxiety, stress or asthenia. More studies are needed, with larger sample sizes and long‐term follow‐ups to establish treatment protocols in relation to the frequency, intensity, duration and periodicity of interventions with virtual reality.

Abstract:Trials. The study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual reality interventions on relieving pain and anxiety in children and adolescents receiving cancer treatment. A search that involved Cochrane Library (comprising Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)), PubMed, ProQuest, MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, Science Direct, and Scopus electronic databases covering the records from January 1, 2000 up to May, 2023 was conducted to determine randomized controlled trials that could be included in our study. The results of the search were limited to "anxiety and pain, adolescents, children, virtual reality, cancer." Of the 160 articles that were reached during the search, seven were found eligible based on inclusion criteria. Hedges' g effect size was calculated for each article. Random effects model was used to test effect sizes and moderator variables. The registration number of this meta-analysis on PROSPERO is CRD42022304737. The outcomes were pain and anxiety. Compared with standard care, virtual reality had a medium and significant effect on anxiety ( g = 0.60, 95% CI: [− 1.05 − 0.15]) and pain ( g = − 0.667, 95% CI: [− 1.08− -0.24]). In addition, age has been identified as an important moderator in the use of virtual reality in pain management. This meta-analysis shows that virtual reality applications are effective interventions for reducing pain and anxiety in the field of pediatric oncology. However, it is necessary to carry out randomized controlled trials that have large samples for evidence-based virtual reality applications in pediatric oncology.
