Abstract:The function of any surgical dressing is to protect and support a wound. The use of Micropore® tape as an alternative dressing following subcuticular sutures has already been described (1, 2), but despite the superior cosmetic result (2), has not gained popularity. The reason for this is that sterile tape is not available. The rationale behind the use of sterile dressings is to avoid contamination of the wound before it has sealed. Tincture of benzoin will haemolyse blood on contact, accelerating wound sealing, thus negating the necessity of sterilisation. In a prospective study, patients were randomly divided into two groups; one having unsterile Micropore tape dressing, and the other, a conventional occlusive dressing. Using the method previously described (2), all wounds, after cleaning, were pretreated with tincture of benzoin, which was allowed to dry before application of the dressing. Wounds were checked at 48 h, 5-7 days and 6 weeks postoperatively.

Abstract:Women with disabilities are more likely to experience violence than women without disabilities and there is a critical gap in research regarding this topic. This study uses Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data to analyse the association between disability and experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) and help-seeking behaviour among women in Haiti, Pakistan, Timor Leste, and Uganda. These countries were chosen because they are representative of the regions where the DHS is conducted and include questions about GBV and disability. The data was analysed based on recommendations from the Washington Group using a disability severity indicator. Logistic regression was the primary method of analysis. Generally, we found women with disabilities had the same or greater odds of experiencing GBV and had the same or lower odds of help-seeking. Given women with disabilities are at least at equal risk of experiencing GBV, it is imperative that programs be developed that are accessible to all women regardless of functional limitations. Also, additional research is needed to determine if there are differences by disability type, if intersectionality is relevant, and to include more unmarried women.

Abstract:This paper reports on findings from international empirical research that explored victim-survivors and perpetrators’ attitudes towards perpetrator support programmes. Ninety-three questionnaires with female victim-survivors of domestic partner violence and abuse, and 18 interviews with male perpetrators were conducted in five European countries. Results showed that of the 93 victim-survivors of domestic violence and abuse, half stated they would have stayed in their relationship with perpetrators if the abuse had stopped, and a similar number reported that they believed their relationships would have been different had there been help for the perpetrator. Analysis of perpetrator interviews showed that they faced barriers to obtaining support, such as being labelled a ‘perpetrator’ which, had they been addressed, may have enhanced their engagement with services. Whilst acknowledging the need for safeguarding and justice, this paper demonstrates the importance of reflecting both victim-survivor and perpetrator needs in order for perpetrators to fully engage with support services. Moreover, it highlighted the need to address the underlying societal issues related to hegemonic masculinity, which can lead to the abuse of women being normalised and the vulnerability of men being stigmatised, through education for young people around healthy relationships.

Abstract:Abstract Background There is limited evidence on the relationship between disability, experiences of gender-based violence (GBV), and mental health among refugee women in humanitarian contexts. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of baseline data ( n = 209) collected from women enrolled in a cohort study of refugee women accessing GBV response services in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. Women were surveyed about GBV experiences (past 12 months, before the last 12 months, before arriving in the refugee camps), functional disability status, and mental health (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress), and we explored the inter-relationship of these factors. Results Among women accessing GBV response services, 44% reported a disability. A higher proportion of women with a disability (69%) reported a past-year experience of physical intimate partner violence and/or physical or sexual non-partner violence, compared to women without a disability (54%). A higher proportion of women with a disability (32%) experienced non-partner physical or sexual violence before arriving in the camp compared to women without a disability (16%). Disability was associated with higher scores for depression (1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54–3.33), PTSD (2.26, 95% CI 0.03–4.49), and anxiety (1.54, 95% CI 0.13–2.95) after adjusting for age, length of encampment, partner status, number of children, and GBV indicators. Conclusions A large proportion of refugee women seeking GBV response services have disabilities, and refugee women with a disability are at high risk of poor mental health. This research highlights the need for mental health and disability screening within GBV response programming.

Abstract:Background Women with disabilities experience higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV). Evidence suggests this violence often manifests in more subtle and severe forms over longer periods of time. There is limited evidence on this association in the Pacific Islands region, despite facing one of the highest global prevalences of IPV. Objective Examine the prevalence of disability and the association between disability and types of IPV experience among women in rural Samoa as part of the EVE Project. Methods This study analysed cross-sectional data collected with nine communities in rural Samoa between December 2022 and February 2023. Enumerators collected data with 707 women on tablets using REDCap. IPV was measured using the standardised Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) domestic violence methodology. Disability was assessed using the Washington Group questions. Logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between disability and experiences of IPV (physical, sexual, emotional and economic violence) among women. Results Having a disability was significantly associated with increased IPV experience among women in this study. When controlling for age and education, women with severe disability were significantly more likely to experience sexual (OR 4.31; p = 0.01) and emotional (OR 2.87; p = 0.02) IPV, when compared to women with no disability. Conclusions Our findings point towards a greater vulnerability of women with disabilities to IPV, and particularly sexual and emotional IPV, in rural Samoa. Qualitative research in partnership with women with disabilities is essential to inform the design of measurement tools and prevention programmes that are grounded in the context-specific experiences and needs of all women with disabilities.

Abstract:Objective/Purpose: The objective of this article is to provide information about the ways in which the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may affect the ongoing public health issue of violence against people with disabilities and how rehabilitation psychologists and other providers can address these concerns in their practice. Method: This article reviews the literature on violence against people with disabilities as well as emerging literature on the COVID-19 pandemic and its social and medical consequences. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic magnifies existing issues and barriers facing people with disabilities who are experiencing interpersonal violence. These issues include reliance on the perpetrator for care and assistance, barriers to reporting abuse and seeking help, fear of retaliation and other negative consequences if abuse is reported, emotional abuse related to disability, and exacerbation of secondary physical and mental health sequalae of abuse. Conclusions/Implications: The COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences enhance the already increased risk for abuse among people with disabilities. Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. The study uses an econometric approach to disaggregate data on disability-related violence reported in Accident and Emergency departments in London to investigate the extent to which the intersections of gender, ethnicity, and age characteristics of disabled people increase their risk of experiencing interpersonal violence. Our empirical findings suggest that females and older individuals are generally more likely to be interpersonal violence victims. The disability dummy is positive and significant, irrespective of gender or ethnicity. This implies that persons with disabilities are more likely to be victims of interpersonal violence than individuals without disabilities, regardless of gender and ethnicity. The most important discovery concerns the magnitude of the dummy coefficient regarding the disability of individuals. The coefficient is the largest for females of Black origin with disabilities, followed by Asians, with white origin exhibiting the smallest coefficient. This suggests that people with disabilities of Black origin are more likely to experience interpersonal violence than the Asian or white community. The study outcomes provide novel and rigorous empirically validated knowledge of the intersectional vectors of power that impact the risk of experiencing disability-related interpersonal violence while informing the development of intersectionality-based policy approaches to tackling disability-related interpersonal violence.

Interpersonal Violence Against Women With Spinal Cord Injury: Adding Insult to Injury

Abstract:Background: Mounting empirical evidence suggests that, compared to women without disabilities, women with disabilities are more likely to experience interpersonal violence (IPV). However, there is extremely limited research attention on IPV against women with spinal cord injury (SCI), a particularly understudied and underserved population. Objectives: To conduct the first known examination of lifetime IPV experience in women with SCI, to explore demographic and disability-related correlates of IPV, and to examine the health impacts of IPV. Methods: The sample included 175 women with traumatic SCI from across the United States who enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of an online psychological health promotion intervention. The data, which included a brief measure of lifetime abuse, were collected as part of the baseline survey administered prior to randomization to the intervention or control conditions. Results: The majority (55%) of the women described experiencing some abuse in their lifetime, with 43% reporting physical abuse, 32% reporting sexual abuse, and 23% reporting disability-related abuse. Sixteen percent of the women indicated that they had experienced all three (physical, sexual, disability) types of abuse. Few demographic and disability characteristics were related to overall lifetime IPV experience; however, disability characteristics were associated with disability-related IPV victimization. In addition, those with a history of IPV had poorer self-reported health and greater depression. Conclusion: This study suggests that IPV is common among women with SCI. More research is needed to understand the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of IPV against women with SCI to help inform policy and practice.

Abstract:This paper presents a coupling scheme of level set method(LSM) and finite element method(FEM) to analyze the dynamic performance of electromagnet with moving parts. Remesh process is necessary to analyze the dynamics of moving object using standard FEM. To reduce remesh process, LSM is coupled with FEM. LSM is useful for analysis of moving objects or propagating models depending on both time and space in fixed mesh. In this paper, we proposed the material setting technique of mover using level set function. We figure out a magnetic force and torque from energy and then calculate the displacement of moving part by solving the state variable equation which consists of a dynamic equation and a circuit equation. To validate a proposed algorithm, we adopted the simple hinged electromagnet model with moving arm.

Abstract:Background: Domestic, family and sexual violence is a prevalent health and social issue. Nurses may be exposed to higher rates of this violence in their personal lives compared to the community, but little is known about their polyvictimisation experiences or health and well-being impacts. Methods: An online descriptive, cross-sectional survey of women nurses, midwives and carer members of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) (Victorian Branch) (response rate: 15.2% of nurses sent an invitation email/28.4% opened the email). Violence survey measures included: intimate partner violence (Composite Abuse Scale); child abuse and sexual violence (Australian Bureau of Statistics Personal Safety Survey items). Health measures included: Short Form-12; Fast Alcohol Screening Test; Patient Health Questionnaire-4; Short Screening for DSM-IV Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; well-being measures included: Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, social support, and financial stress. Proportions were used to describe the prevalence of violence by sociodemographic characteristics and health and well-being issues; logistic regression predicted the odds of experiencing overlapping types of violence and of experiencing health and well-being outcomes. Results: 5,982 participants (from a parent study of 10,674 nurses, midwives and carers) had experienced at least one type of lifetime violence; half (50.1%) had experienced two or three types (polyvictimisation). Survivors of child abuse were three times more likely to experience both intimate partner violence and non-partner adult sexual assault. Any violence was associated with poorer health and well-being, and the proportion of affected participants increased as the types of violence they had experienced increased. Violence in the last 12-months was associated with the poorest health and well-being. Conclusions: Findings suggest a cumulative, temporal and injurious life course effect of domestic, family and sexual violence. The polyvictimisation experiences and health and well-being associations reported by survivor nurses, midwives and carers underscores the need for more accessible and effective workplace interventions to prevent and mitigate psychosocial ill health, especially in the recent aftermath of violence.

Abstract:Physical violence against women is pervasive through out the world and domestic violence has been a longstanding issue in feminist activism and research. Yet, these experiences are often not represented in technological research or design. In the move to consider HCI at the margins, in this paper, we ask: how have ICTs affected the experiences of domestic violence survivors? We interviewed female survivors living in a domestic violence shelter about their experiences with technology. Participants reported that they were harassed with mobile phones, experienced additional harassment (but also support) via social networking sites, and tried to resist using their knowledge of security and privacy.

Abstract:Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health crisis. Often repetitive and occurring over prolonged periods of time, IPV puts survivors at high risk of brain injury (BI). Mental health concerns are highly prevalent both among individuals who have experienced IPV and those who have experienced BI, yet the interrelatedness and complexity of these three challenges when experienced together is poorly understood. This qualitative study explored care provision for IPV survivors with BI (IPV-BI) and mental health concerns from the perspectives of both survivors and providers. This qualitative interpretive description study was part of a broader research project exploring employment, mental health, and COVID-19 implications for survivors of IPV-BI. Participants (N = 24), including survivors and service providers, participated in semi-structured group and individual interviews between October 2020 and February 2021. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Four themes were developed from interview findings: 1) identifying BI and mental health as contributing components to survivors' experiences is critical to getting appropriate care; 2) supporting survivors involves a "toolbox full of strategies" and a flexible approach; 3) connecting and collaborating across sectors is key; and 4) underfunding and systemic barriers hinder access to care. Finally, we share recommendations from participants to better support IPV survivors. Identifying both BI and mental health concerns among IPV survivors is critical to providing appropriate supports. Survivors of IPV experiencing BI and mental health concerns benefit from a flexible and collaborative approach to care; health and social care systems should be set up to support these collaborative approaches.

Abstract:As trauma survivors, women and girls from refugee backgrounds face significant challenges when settling in host countries; the risk of domestic and family violence (DFV) accentuates these difficulties. Reflecting on findings from a seven-year university and industry research partnership, this article explores the etiology of DFV in women from refugee backgrounds living in non-metropolitan Australia. Drawing on action research principles and intersectional and social ecological theoretical frameworks, this study captured diverse women's views about experiences and strategies for addressing DFV in refugee communities. Having developed trusting relationships with participants over the different study phases, the first author conducted in-depth interviews with women of refugee backgrounds, listening deeply and confirming findings with participants as they emerged. Interviews were also conducted with staff from settlement, health and specialist domestic violence services to offer a broad perspective on how best to support refugee women experiencing DFV. Key findings revealed stressors and support that impact violence, such as employment status and acculturation, and identification of who the women would trust if experiencing violence. By understanding the interweaving factors influencing women's risk of DFV and strategies to address it, global healthcare providers will be better positioned to collaborate with refugee communities and specialist services.

Reducing symbolic-violence in the research encounter: collaborating with a survivor of domestic abuse in a qualitative study in UK primary care

Abstract:This paper explores ideas of symbolic violence inherent in the research encounter (Bourdieu 1999). After defining symbolic violence and how the concept enters into domestic violence and abuse (DVA) research, we discuss the challenges arising from a (DVA) survivor taking on the role of interviewer in a qualitative study nested within a UK primary care based trial: IRIS (Identification and Referral to Improve Safety). KS, a survivor of DVA, conducted interviews with 12 women who had been referred to a domestic violence agency by primary care clinicians taking part in the IRIS trial in two UK cities (Bristol and east London) during 2009. Field notes were kept during all of the research meetings with KS and these were included in analysis. Our analysis maps the research pathway of 'non-violent communication' and discusses the role of social symmetry and proximity in the research encounter. We conclude that while a welcoming disposition, empathy and active listening are all generic skills to qualitative research; if a researcher can enter fieldwork with a claim of social proximity and symmetry, their use of these generic skills is enhanced through a process of shared objectification and empowerment talk. We explore the limitations of social proximity, its relationship to feminist and anthropological theories of 'insider' research and its relevance to primary care research.

Abstract:Sulphur and carbon isotopic analyses on small samples of kerogens and sulphide minerals from biogenic and non-biogenic sediments of the 2.7 × 109 years(Ga)-old Belingwe Greenstone Belt (Zimbabwe) imply that a complex biological sulphur cycle was in operation. Sulphur isotopic compositions display a wider range of biological fractionation than hitherto reported from the Archaean. Carbon isotopic values in kerogen record fractionations characteristic of rubisco activity, methanogenesis and methylotrophy, and possibly anoxygenic photosynthesis. Carbon and sulphur isotopic fractionations have been interpreted in terms of metabolic processes in 2.7Ga prokaryote mat communities, and indicate the operation of a diverse array of metabolic processes. The results are consistent with models of early molecular evolution derived from ribosomal RNA.
Interventions that address interpersonal violence experienced by adolescents globally: a systematic review of reviews

Abstract:Globally, adolescents experience a significant burden of interpersonal violence, impacting their health, well-being and life trajectory. To address this, decision-makers need reliable evidence on effective interventions across various contexts. Objectives: Synthesise the evidence for interventions addressing interpersonal violence experienced by adolescents aged 10-25 years. Methods: Six electronic databases were systematically searched. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses published globally between 2010 and 2022 were included if they reported interventions addressing interpersonal violence experienced by adolescents. Results were synthesised narratively. Results: 35 systematic reviews were included, of which 16 were also meta-analyses. Majority of reviews included interventions set in high income countries (71%) and implemented in educational settings (91%). Effectiveness was reported in majority of interventions measuring victimisation and/or perpetration of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, bullying and/or cyberbullying (90%), majority of interventions measuring improvements in knowledge and attitudes towards violence (94%) and all interventions measuring bystander behaviour and improvements in well-being and quality of life. However, the quality of included reviews as per Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 and National Health and Medical Research Council was low, and equity as per PROGRESS-PLUS was seldom considered. There was also a paucity of interventions addressing interpersonal violence in low-middle income countries (12%) and none of the included interventions specifically addressed interpersonal violence perpetrated in the home such as family violence. Conclusion: There is some evidence of promising interventions to address interpersonal violence experienced by adolescents, however there are gaps in scope and implementation. There is a need for equity-oriented public health approaches to comprehensively address the disproportionate burden of interpersonal violence experienced by adolescents globally, including those at the highest risk of harm. Protecting people with communication disability from modern slavery: Supporting Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 16

Abstract:Purpose: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development identifies the need for inclusive societies and justice for people who experience, or are at risk of experiencing, modern slavery. The primary objective of this commentary paper is to consider current research and practice in relation to the protection of people with communication disability from modern slavery. The paper considers the role of SLPs in developing and disseminating accessible information to help achieve decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) and peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). Result: This paper considers five areas for protecting people with communication disability from modern slavery: (1) accessible information, (2) advocacy, (3) rights-based approaches, (4) improved understanding about access to services, and (5) education. Practice examples are discussed across each of these areas, with a focus on accessible information. Conclusion: This commentary asserts that information about modern slavery must be accessible so that people with communication disability experience inclusion, safety, and justice. SLPs are well placed to implement communication strategies, such as accessible information, to help protect people with communication disability from modern slavery. This commentary paper focuses on SDG 8 and SDG 16 and also addresses SDG 1, SDG 3, SDG 4 and SDG 10.
