Abstract:Background: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is an atherothrombotic disease. Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbiota-dependent metabolite, has been shown to be proatherogenic and prothrombotic. However, the involvement of TMAO in AIS remains unclear. This study aimed to observe the dynamic changes of TMAO in AIS patients and identify the prognostic value of TMAO for major ischemic events and unfavorable functional outcomes. Methods: This study included 204 AIS patients and 108 healthy controls. Blood samples for TMAO analyses were drawn at admission, 2 and 7 days of admission. Logistic regression models and receiver operating characteristic curves were established to identify associations between TMAO levels and major ischemic events (ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or death from an ischemic vascular event), as well as unfavorable functional outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score >= 3), at 90 days and 12 months. Results: TMAO levels showed no significant changes before and within 24 h of AIS treatment (at admission) but decreased significantly thereafter. Elevated log(2)-transformed baseline TMAO levels were associated with increased risks of 90-day [odds ratio (OR), 2.62; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.55-4.45; p < 0.001] and 12-month (OR, 3.59; 95% CI, 2.12-6.09; p < 0.001) major ischemic events, as well as 90-day (OR, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.46-5.71; p = 0.002) and 12-month (OR, 2.58; 95% CI, 1.50-4.46; p = 0.001) unfavorable functional outcomes, after adjustments for confounding factors. The areas under curve of baseline TMAO levels for predicting 90-day and 12-month major ischemic events were 0.72 (95% CI, 0.61-0.83; p < 0.001) and 0.76 (95% CI, 0.66-0.85; p < 0.001). Baseline TMAO levels improved the prognostic accuracy of conventional risk factors, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level. Conclusions: TMAO levels decreased with time since stroke onset. Elevated TMAO levels at an earlier period portended poor stroke outcomes, broadening the potential clinical utility of TMAO as an independent prognostic marker and therapeutic target.

Abstract:Background-Gut microbiota has been suggested to play a role in almost all major diseases including cardio-and cerebrovascular diseases. A possible mechanism is the transformation of dietary choline and L-carnitine into trimethylamine by gut bacteria. This metabolite is further oxidized into trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in liver and promotes atherogenesis. Nevertheless, little is known about gut microbial diversity and blood TMAO levels in stroke patients. Methods and Results-We performed a case-control study of patients with large-artery atherosclerotic ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. TMAO was determined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Gut microbiome was profiled using Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 tag. Within the asymptomatic control group, participants with and without carotid atherosclerotic plaques showed similar levels of TMAO without a significant difference in gut microbiota; however, the gut microbiome of stroke and transient ischemic attack patients was clearly different from that of the asymptomatic group. Stroke and transient ischemic attack patients had more opportunistic pathogens, such as Enterobacter, Megasphaera, Oscillibacter, and Desulfovibrio, and fewer commensal or beneficial genera including Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Faecalibacterium. This dysbiosis was correlated with the severity of the disease. The TMAO level in the stroke and transient ischemic attack patients was significantly lower, rather than higher, than that of the asymptomatic group. Conclusions-Participants with asymptomatic atherosclerosis did not exhibit an obvious change in gut microbiota and blood TMAO levels; however, stroke and transient ischemic attack patients showed significant dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, and their blood TMAO levels were decreased.

Abstract:Ischemic stroke has been demonstrated to cause an imbalance of gut microbiota. However, the change in gut microbiota-mediated bile acids (BAs) metabolites remains unclear. Here, we observed a decrease in gut microbiota-mediated BAs, especially ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), in the serum of stroke patients as well as in the intestine, serum and brain of stroke mice. Restoration of UDCA could decrease the area of infarction and improve the neurological function and cognitive function in mice in association with inhibition of NLRP3-related pro-inflammatory cytokines through TGR5/PKA pathway. Furthermore, knocking out TGR5 and inhibiting PKA activity reduce the protective effect of UDCA. Taken together, our results suggest that microbiota-mediated UDCA plays an important role in alleviating inflammatory responses and might be a promising therapeutic target in ischemic stroke.

Abstract:Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota-derived metabolite, the production of which in vivo is mainly regulated by dietary choices, gut microbiota, and the hepatic enzyme flavin monooxygenase (FMO), while its elimination occurs via the kidneys. The TMAO level is positively correlated with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have found that TMAO plays an important role in the development of ischemic stroke. In this review, we describe the relationship between TMAO and ischemic stroke risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, etc.), disease risk, severity, prognostic outcomes, and recurrence and discuss the possible mechanisms by which they interact. Importantly, TMAO induces atherosclerosis and thrombosis through lipid metabolism, foam cell formation, endothelial dysfunction (via inflammation, oxidative stress, and pyroptosis), enhanced platelet hyper-reactivity, and the upregulation and activation of vascular endothelial tissue factors. Although the pathogenic mechanisms underlying TMAO's aggravation of disease severity and its effects on post-stroke neurological recovery and recurrence risk remain unclear, they may involve inflammation, astrocyte function, and pro-inflammatory monocytes. In addition, this paper provides a summary and evaluation of relevant preclinical and clinical studies on interventions regarding the gut-microbiota-dependent TMAO level to provide evidence for the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke through the gut microbe–TMAO pathway.

Abstract:Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota-derived metabolite produced by the action of gut microbiota and the hepatic enzyme Flavin Mono‐oxygenase 3 (FMO3). TMAO level has a positive correlation with the risk of cardiovascular events, including stroke, and their level is influenced mainly by dietary choice and the action of liver enzyme FMO3. TMAO plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis plaque, which is one of the causative factors of the stroke event. Preclinical and clinical investigations on the TMAO and associated stroke risk, severity, and outcomes are summarised in this review. In addition, mechanisms of TMAO-driven vascular dysfunction are also discussed, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, thrombus and foam cell formation, altered cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, etc. Post-stroke inflammatory cascades involving activation of immune cells, i.e., microglia and astrocytes, result in Blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption, allowing TMAO to infiltrate the brain and further aggravate inflammation. This event occurs as a result of the activation of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway through the release of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that further aggravate the BBB and initiate further recruitment of immune cells in the brain. Thus, it's likely that maintaining TMAO levels and associated gut microbiota could be a promising approach for treating and improving stroke complications.

Abstract:<p>Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is produced when trimethylamine, a waste product of gut microbes, is converted via hepatic flavin monooxygenases. As TMAO is a potential causative factor in various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) considerable research interest has arisen on its use as a biomarker. Higher TMAO levels are associated with future risk of both incident CVD in the general population and established CVD, including stroke. The addition of TMAO into models with traditional risk factors significantly improved the prediction of future CVD risk. TMAO promotes atherosclerosis and is associated with platelet hyperreactivity and inflammation, which are in turn associated with the development of stroke and its secondary consequences. Additionally, TMAO may play a key mediator role in the relationship between the diet, gut microbiota, and CVD development. Compelling evidence suggesting that TMAO is both a risk factor and prognostic marker of stroke and CVD. Potential therapeutic strategy of diet and drugs in reducing TMAO levels have emerged. Thus, TMAO is a novel biomarker and target in stroke and CVD prevention.<br/></p>

Abstract:Background: Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke are associated with a high rate of long-term disability and death. Recent investigations focus efforts to better understand how alterations in gut microbiota composition influence clinical outcomes. A key metabolite, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), is linked to multiple inflammatory, vascular, and oxidative pathways. The current biochemical underpinnings of microbial effects on stroke remain largely understudied. The goal of our study is to explore the current literature to explain the interactions between the human gut microbiome and stroke progression, recovery, and outcome. We also provide a descriptive review of TMAO. Methods: A systematic literature search of published articles between January 1, 1990, and March 22, 2020, was performed on the PubMed database to identify studies addressing the role of the microbiome and TMAO in the pathogenesis and recovery of acute stroke. Our initial investigation focused on human subject studies and was further expanded to include animal studies. Relevant articles were included, regardless of study design. The analysis included reviewers classifying and presenting selected articles by study design and sample size in a chart format. Results: A total of 222 titles and abstracts were screened. A review of the 68 original human subject articles resulted in the inclusion of 24 studies in this review. To provide further insight into TMAO as a key player, an additional 40 articles were also reviewed and included. Our findings highlighted that alterations in richness and abundance of gut microbes and increased plasma TMAO play an important role in vascular events and outcomes. Our analysis revealed that restoration of a healthy gut, through targeted TMAO-reducing therapies, could provide alternative secondary prevention for at-risk patients. Discussion: Biochemical interactions between the gut microbiome and inflammation, resulting in metabolic derangements, can affect stroke progression and outcomes. Clinical evidence supports the importance of TMAO in modulating underlying stroke risk factors. Lack of standardization and distinct differences in sample sizes among studies are major limitations.

Abstract:Ischemic stroke (IS) is a severe cerebrovascular disease that seriously endangers human health. Gut microbiota plays a key role as an intermediate mediator in bidirectional regulation between the brain and the intestine. In recent years, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) as a gut microbiota metabolite has received widespread attention in cardiovascular diseases. Elevated levels of TMAO may increase the risk of IS by affecting IS risk factors such as atherosclerosis, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. TMAO exacerbates neurological damage in IS patients, increases the risk of IS recurrence, and is an independent predictor of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) in patients. Current research suggests that the mechanisms of TMAO action include endothelial dysfunction, promoting of foam cell formation, influence on cholesterol metabolism, and enhancement of platelet reactivity. Lowering plasma TMAO levels through the rational use of traditional Chinese medicine, dietary management, vitamins, and probiotics can prevent and treat IS.

Abstract:Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a molecule generated from choline, betaine, and carnitine via gut microbial metabolism. The plasma level of TMAO is determined by several factors including diet, gut microbial flora, drug administration and liver flavin monooxygenase activity. In humans, recent clinical studies evidence a positive correlation between elevated plasma levels of TMAO and an increased risk for major adverse cardiovascular events. A direct correlation between increased TMAO levels and neurological disorders has been also hypothesized. Several therapeutic strategies are being explored to reduce TMAO levels, including use of oral broad spectrum antibiotics, promoting the growth of bacteria that use TMAO as substrate and the development of target-specific molecules. Despite the accumulating evidence, it is questioned whether TMAO is the mediator of a bystander in the disease process. Thus, it is important to undertake studies to establish the role of TMAO in human health and disease. In this article, we reviewed dietary sources and metabolic pathways of TMAO, as well as screened the studies suggesting possible involvement of TMAO in the etiology of cardiovascular and neurological disorders, underlying the importance of TMAO mediating inflammatory processes. Finally, the potential utility of TMAO as therapeutic target is also analyzed.

Abstract:Morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are exceedingly high worldwide. Researchers have found that the occurrence and development of CVDs are closely related to intestinal microecology. Imbalances in intestinal microecology caused by changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiota will eventually alter intestinal metabolites, thus transforming the host physiological state from healthy mode to pathological mode. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is produced from the metabolism of dietary choline and L-carnitine by intestinal microbiota, and many studies have shown that this important product inhibits cholesterol metabolism, induces platelet aggregation and thrombosis, and promotes atherosclerosis. TMAO is directly or indirectly involved in the pathogenesis of CVDs and is an important risk factor affecting the occurrence and even prognosis of CVDs. This review presents the biological and chemical characteristics of TMAO, and the process of TMAO produced by gut microbiota. In particular, the review focuses on summarizing how the increase of gut microbial metabolite TMAO affects CVDs including atherosclerosis, heart failure, hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, and other CVD-related diseases. Understanding the mechanism of how increases in TMAO promotes CVDs will potentially facilitate the identification and development of targeted therapy for CVDs.

Abstract:Ischemic stroke is by far the most common cerebrovascular disease and a major burden to the global economy and public health. Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a small molecule compound produced by the metabolism of intestinal microorganisms, is reportedly associated with the risk of stroke, as well as the severity and prognosis of stroke; however, this conclusion remains contentious. This article reviews the production of TMAO, TMAO's relationship with different etiological types of ischemic stroke, and the possibility of reducing TMAO levels to improve the prognosis of ischemic stroke.

Abstract:Wild populations of the Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus , in Jutland have been known to be resistant to the anticoagulant rodenticide warfarin since 1962. The inheritance of the resistance was investigated in the F 1 , backcross and intercross. The results are consistent with the resistance being due to a major gene at the Rw locus. Resistant homozygotes, heterozygotes and susceptible homozygotes appeared to be distinguishable experimentally on the basis of differences in their susceptibility to vitamin K deficiency. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies of the inheritance of warfarin resistance in rats.
Prognostic value of gut microbiota-derived trimethylamine N-oxide in patients with ischemic stroke: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the intestinal microbial metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) level in the plasma and the outcomes of patients with ischemic stroke (IS). Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were systematically searched until July 1, 2022 to identify clinical studies on TMAO levels and prognosis of IS. The identified studies were then screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis on the final included studies was performed using the Stata (version 17.0) software to investigate the effects of TMAO level on the prognosis of IS. Results: Four studies involving 1,026 participants from 2019 to 2022 were considered. The results indicated an association between high circulating TMAO concentration and poor functional outcomes (rate ratio [RR]: 2.76; 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.33,5.72; P = 0.006; I2 = 72.7%; P-heterogeneity = 0.012; random-effects model), mortality (RR: 5.37; 95%CI: 2.63,10.97; P < 0.001; I2 = 0.0%; P-heterogeneity = 0.704; fixed-effects model), and recursive ischemic events (RR: 2.71; 95%CI: 1.68,4.36; P < 0.001; I2 = 0.0%; P heterogeneity = 0.779; fixed-effects model) 3 months after IS. Conclusions: Elevated TMAO level may be an adverse prognostic indicator in patients with IS.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Over the recent years, the role of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) as a gut-derived metabolite mediating cardiovascular disease pathogenesis has been under particularly intense scrutiny. The aim was to explore whether TMAO levels were associated with clinical severity or functional outcome in Chinese patients with ischemic stroke.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>This is a single-center, prospective cohort study from Xiamen, China. We examined the relationship between fasting TMAO and 2 of its nutrient precursors, choline and betaine, vs. 3-month functional outcome and mortality in 351 first-ever patients with acute ischemic stroke.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>The median value of the plasma level of TMAO was 6.1 μM (IQR, 3.7–9.9 μM), which was higher than in those control cases (4.0; 2.4–5.9 μM). Patients with a poor outcome and nonsurvivors had significantly increased TMAO levels on admission (<em>P</em> < 0.001). Following adjustments for traditional risk factors, increased TMAO concentrations remained predictive of both poor outcome and mortality risks in stroke patients [e.g., quartiles 4 vs 1, odd ratio 5.65 (95% CI, 2.87–13.45), <em>P</em> < 0.001; and 5.84 (95% CI, 3.05–16.12), P < 0.001, respectively]. In multivariate analysis, TMAO was an independent predictor of functional outcome and mortality and improved the prognostic accuracy of the NIHSS to predict functional outcome (combined areas under the curve, 0.82; 95% CI 0.77–0.89, <em>P</em> = 0.003) and mortality (combined areas under the curve, 0.85; 95% CI: 0.80–0.90, <em>P</em> = 0.002).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Fasting plasma concentrations of gut microbial TMAO are higher in patients with ischemic stroke and portend higher poor functional outcome events and mortality.</p>

Abstract:Introduction: The relationship between baseline trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels and stroke outcomes remains unclear. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to summarize the existing relevant research. Methods: We searched for studies on the association between baseline plasma levels of TMAO and stroke outcomes in the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from their inception to 12 October 2022. Two researchers independently reviewed the studies for inclusion and extracted the relevant data. Results: Seven studies were included in the qualitative analysis. Among them, six studies reported the outcome of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and one study of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), respectively. Furthermore, no study reported the outcome of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Among patients with AIS, high baseline TMAO levels were associated with unfavorable functional outcomes or mortality at 3 months, as well as a high hazard ratio of mortality, recurrence, or major adverse cardiac event. Moreover, TMAO levels showed predictive utility for unfavorable functional outcomes or mortality at 3 months. Among patients with ICH, high TMAO levels were associated with unfavorable functional outcomes at 3 months, regardless of whether the TMAO value was considered a continuous or a categorical variable. Conclusion: Limited evidence indicates that high baseline plasma levels of TMAO may be associated with poor stroke outcomes. Further studies are warranted to confirm the relationship between TMAO and stroke outcomes.
Exploratory Transcriptomic Profiling Reveals the Role of Gut Microbiota in Vascular Dementia

Abstract:Stroke is the second most common cause of cognitive impairment and dementia. Vascular dementia (VaD), a cognitive impairment following a stroke, is common and significantly impacts the quality of life. We recently demonstrated via gut microbe transplant studies that the gut microbe-dependent trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) pathway impacts stroke severity, both infarct size and long-term cognitive outcomes. However, the molecular mechanisms that underly the role of the microbiome in VaD have not been explored in depth. To address this issue, we performed a comprehensive RNA-sequencing analysis to identify differentially expressed (DE) genes in the ischemic cerebral cortex of mouse brains at pre-stroke and post-stroke day 1 and day 3. A total of 4016, 3752 and 7861 DE genes were identified at pre-stroke and post-stroke day 1 and day 3, respectively. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis indicated pathways of neurodegeneration in multiple diseases, chemokine signaling, calcium signaling, and IL-17 signaling as the key enriched pathways. Inflammatory response genes interleukin-1 beta (Il-1β), chemokines (C–X–C motif chemokine ligand 10 (Cxcl10), chemokine ligand 2 (Ccl2)), and immune system genes (S100 calcium binding protein 8 (S100a8), lipocalin-2 (Lcn2)) were among the most significantly upregulated genes. Hypocretin neuropeptide precursor (Hcrt), a neuropeptide, and transcription factors such as neuronal PAS domain protein 4 (Npas4), GATA binding protein 3 (Gata3), and paired box 7 (Pax7) were among the most significantly downregulated genes. In conclusion, our results indicate that higher plasma TMAO levels induce differential mRNA expression profiles in the ischemic brain tissue in our pre-clinical stroke model, and the predicted pathways provide the molecular basis for regulating the TMAO-enhanced neuroinflammatory response in the brain.

Abstract:Trimethylamine lyases are expressed in a wide range of intestinal microbiota which metabolize dietary nutrients like choline, betaine, and L-carnitine to form trimethylamine (TMA). Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is an oxidative product of trimethylamine (TMA) catalyzed by the action of flavin monooxygenases (FMO) in the liver. Higher levels of TMAO in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been shown to contribute to the development of risk factors and actively promote the pathogenesis of metabolic, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. The investigations on the harmful effects of TMAO in the development and progression of neurodegenerative and sleep disorders are summarized in this manuscript. Clinical investigations on the role of TMAO in predicting risk factors and prognostic factors in patients with neurological disorders are also summarized. It is observed that the mechanisms underlying TMAO-mediated pathogenesis include activation of inflammatory signaling pathways such as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κβ), NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, and MAPK/JNK in the periphery and brain. Data suggests that TMAO levels increase with age-related cognitive dysfunction and also induce mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, neuronal senescence, and synaptic damage in the brain. Further research into the relationships between dietary food consumption and gut microbiota-dependent TMAO levels could provide novel therapeutic options for neurological illnesses.
Signal Pathways and Intestinal Flora through Trimethylamine N-oxide in Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:The current studies show signs of progress in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) with the "brain-gut axis." Restoring intestinal flora balance can alleviate neurodegeneration in the central nervous system. However, due to the complex mechanisms involved in the brain-gut axis, the neuroprotective mechanism brought by intestinal flora has not been fully understood. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a microbiota-dependent metabolism production; TMAO has been proven to be a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, thrombosis, type II diabetes, and other diseases. Meanwhile, all the above diseases are associated with AD; thus, we speculate that TMAO and AD are also correlated. Microbiota, such as Firmicutes, Ruminococcaceae, Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia, etc., correlate with the production process of TMAO. High choline intake and insulin resistance have also been identified as contributors to TMAO synthesis. With the increasing TMAO in plasma, TMAO can enter the central nervous system, causing neuroinflammation and immune responses and damaging the blood-brain barrier. TMAO can increase the expression of Aβ and the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, regulate the signal pathways of NLRP3/ASC/caspase1, SIRT1/p53/p21/Rb, PERK/eIF2α/ER-stress, SIRT3-SOD2-mtROS, TXNIP-NLPR3, and PERK/Akt/mTOR, and stimulate the inflammation, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the ROS. In this mini-review, we have summarized the diseases induced by TMAO through clinical and signal pathways, and intestinal flora correlated with TMAO. Through the analysis of diseases and mechanisms involved in TMAO, we have concluded TMAO to be a potentially important pathological factor of AD.

Abstract:Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has emerged as a newly identified gut microbiota-dependent metabolite contributing to a variety of diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of our study was to determine whether a relatively high TMAO level is associated with an increased risk of poor outcome in ischemic stroke patients. From June 2018 to December 2018, we prospectively recruited acute ischemic stroke patients diagnosed within 24 h of symptom onset. The plasma TMAO level was measured at admission for all patients. Functional outcome was evaluated at 3 months after the stroke using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and then dichotomized as favorable (mRS 0–2) or unfavorable (mRS 3–6). A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between TMAO concentration and poor functional outcome and mortality at 3 months. Of the 225 acute ischemic stroke patients included in the analysis, the median TMAO concentration was 3.8 µM (interquartile range, 1.9–4.8 µM). At 3 months after admission, poor functional outcome was observed in 116 patients (51.6%), and 51 patients had died (22.7%). After adjusting for potential confounders, patients with TMAO levels in the highest quartile were more likely to have higher risks of poor functional outcome [compared with the lowest quartile, odds ratio (OR) 3.63; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.34–9.82; P = 0.011] and mortality (OR 4.27; 95% CI 1.07–17.07; P = 0.040). Our data suggest that a high plasma TMAO level upon admission may predict unfavorable clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients.
