Abstract:Since the advent of industrialization and urbanization, acid rain has emerged as one of the quintessential global environmental issues. However, the effects of acid rain on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles of terrestrial ecosystems are still far from fully understood, though some studies have reported the sensitivity of living organisms and soil physicochemical properties to acidic conditions. Herein, we conducted intact soil core experiments to understand the effects of artificial acid rains of pH 5.0, 4.0 and 3.0 on soil CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes and microbial communities in an agricultural soil of southern China. We did not detect any effect of acid rain on CO2 and N2O fluxes as compared to the control; however, acid rain of pH 3.0 significantly reduced the cumulative CH4 flux from the soil. Most noticeably, both acid rains of pH 4.0 and pH 3.0 significantly increased the total amount of soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) by increasing the PLFA contents of gram-positive bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, though all the acid rain treatments did not change the relative abundance of microbial groups. In addition, both CO2 and CH4 fluxes negatively correlated with the total amount of soil microbial PLFAs; however, the N2O flux positively correlated to soil NO3 −-N contents (p < 0.05). These results confirm the recent theoretical predictions that N-addition (e.g., by acid rain) may alter microbial C utilization pattern by allocating more C to the microbial biomass than to respiration. Overall, our results demonstrated that acid rain substantially altered the soil microbial biomass, and reduced the cumulative CH4 flux from the agricultural soil during the experimental period. Given these findings, we suggest further research to investigate the responses of soil greenhouse gas emissions and microbial communities to long-term acid rain exposures in the context of climate change.

Abstract:Acid rain and nitrogen deposition resulting from fossil fuel combustion and atmospheric NH3 enrichment have inflicted significant damage to ecosystems on a global scale. However, their specific impacts on forest soil ecosystems, particularly in soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling, remain unclear. For this study metagenomic sequencing was employed to study the effects of simulated acid rain and nitrogen deposition on microbial functional genes in a subtropical plantation in the Yangtze River Delta region. Our findings indicated that acid rain and nitrogen deposition did not have significant impacts on overall functional Shannon diversity. However, acid rain treatments did alter microbial functional structures, particularly as relates to C, N, and P cycling. Notably, the soil pH had a significant correlation with microbial functional profiles. In the absence of nitrogen deposition, acid rain led to an increase in the relative abundance of starch and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation processes, while reducing the relative abundance of multiple systems and reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) pathway processes. Further, acid rain decreased the relative abundance of nitrogen fixation and nitrification processes, as exemplified by hao, nirK, and norZ genes, while increasing the relative abundance of norC and narI genes. Additionally, acid rain was associated with a decrease in the relative abundance of P starvation regulation and inorganic P solubilization processes. However, N deposition did not have a significant effect on microbial functional processes related to C, N, and P cycling. Our study emphasized the negative impacts of short-term acid rain on soil N and P cycling in a subtropical plantation, which surpassed that of short-term N deposition.
Idiosyncratic responses of microbial communities and carbon utilization to acid rain frequency in the agricultural and forest soils

Abstract:The level of acidity in rainfall can alter soil nutrient cycling (e.g., carbon [C] cycle), while the effect of changing acid rain frequency on soil C cycling and involved microbial communities remains largely understudied. Here, we manipulated a laboratory intact soil core experiment to test the effect of acid rain frequency (0, 30% and 100%) on soil CO2 emission, microbial communities, and metabolism of various carbon sources in the agricultural and forest soils in southern China. We found idiosyncratic responses of soil microbial communities and carbon utilization to acid rain frequency in two different soil ecosystems. The high acid rain frequency (100%) substantially reduced soil microbial biomass, particularly those of gram-negative bacteria in forest soil, while this effect was not observed in the agricultural soil. Moreover, the acid rain frequencies (30% and 100%) significantly reduced the utilization of amines/amides in agricultural soil (p< 0.05), while they did not alter the carbon sources utilization in forest soil. However, surprisingly, the acid rain frequency did not affect the soil CO2 emission in agricultural and forest soils, thus suggesting a complex relationship between soil microbial biomass or abundance and CO2 emission. Our results suggest that the agricultural and forest soil have idiosyncratic responses to changing acid rain frequency, probably because of differences in their biological and physicochemical properties.

Abstract:Soil microbial community drives the terrestrial carbon (C) cycling by C sources metabolism (i.e., organic C decomposition), however, the microbial response to changing acid rain frequency remains less studied, thus hampering global warming projection. Here, we manipulated a simulated experiment to decipher the impact of acid rain frequency (0, 30%, and 100%) on microbial community and C sources metabolism in the agricultural and forest soils of southern China, based on the phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) analysis and BIOLOG method, respectively. We found that changing acid rain frequency did not affect the microbial biomass and community structure of agricultural soil during the whole experiment period, while the 30% and 100% acid rain frequencies significantly decreased the microbial biomass, and altered the microbial community structure of forest soil at the early stage. However, changing acid rain frequency did not influence the microbial C sources metabolism in the agricultural soil, but 30% acid rain frequency significantly reduced the microbial utilization of carboxylic acids in the forest soil. Moreover, increasing acid rain frequency promoted the microbial community dissimilarities of forest soil. The microbial community structure and C sources utilization of agricultural soil were significantly related to soil available phosphorus content, while that of forest soil correlated with the soil available potassium content and temperature. Changes in soil environmental condition, soil acidification parameters and soil nutrients explained most of the variance of microbial community and C sources utilization (81% and 57%, respectively) in the forest soil, whereas great uncertainties of microbial community and C sources utilization existed in the agricultural soil with the explanatory proportion being 20% and 10%, respectively. Our findings suggest that the microbial community of forest soil is more sensitive to changing acid rain frequency than that of agricultural soil in a short term. These results support the prediction of microbes-driven C cycling dynamics in specific soil ecosystems in the context of changing acid rain frequency.
Atmospheric CO 2 Enrichment and Reactive Nitrogen Inputs Interactively Stimulate Soil Cation Losses and Acidification.

Abstract:Reactive N inputs (Nr) may alleviate N-limitation of plant growth and are assumed to help sustain plant responses to the rising atmospheric CO2 (eCO(2)). However, Nr and eCO(2) may elicit a cascade reaction that alters soil chemistry and nutrient availability, shifting the limiting factors of plant growth, particularly in acidic tropical and subtropical croplands with low organic matter and low nutrient cations. Yet, few have so far examined the interactive effects of Nr and eCO(2) on the dynamics of soil cation nutrients and soil acidity. We investigated the cation dynamics in the plant-soil system with exposure to eCO(2) and different N sources in a subtropical, acidic agricultural soil. eCO(2) and Nr, alone and interactively, increased Ca2+ and Mg2+ m soil solutions or leachates in aerobic agroecosystems. eCO(2) significantly reduced soil pH, and NH4+-N inputs amplified this effect, suggesting that eCO(2)-induced plant preference of NH4+-N and plant growth may facilitate soil acidification. This is, to our knowledge, the first direct demonstration of eCO(2) enhancement of soil acidity, although other studies have previously shown that eCO(2) can increase cation release into soil solutions. Together, these findings provide new insights into the dynamics of cation nutrients and soil acidity under future climatic scenarios, highlighting the urgency for more studies on plant-soil responses to climate change in acidic tropical and subtropical ecosystems.
Effects of Sulfuric, Nitric, and Mixed Acid Rain on the Decomposition of Fine Root Litter in Southern China

Abstract:Background China has been increasingly subject to significant acid rain, which has negative impacts on forest ecosystems. Recently, the concentrations of NO 3 − in acid rain have increased in conjunction with the rapid rise of nitrogen deposition, which makes it difficult to precisely quantify the impacts of acid rain on forest ecosystems. Methods For this study, mesocosm experiments employed a random block design, comprised of ten treatments involving 120 discrete plots (0.6 m × 2.0 m). The decomposition of fine roots and dynamics of nutrient loss were evaluated under the stress of three acid rain analogues (e.g., sulfuric (SO 4 2− /NO 3 − 5:1), nitric (1:5), and mixed (1:1)). Furthermore, the influences of soil properties (e.g., soil pH, soil total carbon, nitrogen, C/N ratio, available phosphorus, available potassium, and enzyme activity) on the decomposition of fine roots were analyzed. Results The soil pH and decomposition rate of fine root litter decreased when exposed to simulated acid rain with lower pH levels and higher NO 3 − concentrations. The activities of soil enzymes were significantly reduced when subjected to acid rain with higher acidity. The activities of soil urease were more sensitive to the effects of the SO 4 2− /NO 3 − (S/N) ratio of acid rain than other soil enzyme activities over four decomposition time periods. Furthermore, the acid rain pH significantly influenced the total carbon (TC) of fine roots during decomposition. However, the S/N ratio of acid rain had significant impacts on the total nitrogen (TN). In addition, the pH and S/N ratio of the acid rain had greater impacts on the metal elements (K, Ca, and Al) of fine roots than did TC, TN, and total phosphorus. Structural equation modeling results revealed that the acid rain pH had a stronger indirect impact (0.757) on the decomposition rate of fine roots (via altered soil pH and enzyme activities) than direct effects. However, the indirect effects of the acid rain S/N ratio (0.265) on the fine root decomposition rate through changes in soil urease activities and the content of litter elements were lower than the pH of acid rain. Conclusions Our results suggested that the acid rain S/N ratio exacerbates the inhibitory effects of acid rain pH on the decomposition of fine root litter.

Abstract:With the comprehensive emissions of fossil fuel combustion and transportation waste gas, the concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOX) in the environmental atmosphere increase significantly, leading to nitric acid rain (NAR) pollution. However, the effects of NAR on soil enzyme activities and soil microbial metabolism are unclear. In this study, the Quercus acutissima Carruth. forest in the Yangtze River Delta of China was selected as the experimental subject, and was exposed to the simulated spraying of NAR with pH values of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 to study the response of the forest soil enzyme activities and soil microbial metabolism to NAR. The results showed that compared to the non-NAR treatment, the activities of β-1,4-glucosidase (BG), L-leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and β-1,4-N-acetylglucosidase (NAG) decreased by 56.48%–42.24%, 44.57%–38.20%, and 56.13%–48.11% under the AR2.5 and AR3.5 treatments, respectively. Moreover, there was no significant change in the Vector Length (VL) under different gradients of NAR. The Vector Angle (VA) increased with the decrease of the pH value and reached the maximum value with the AR2.5 treatment, indicating that the strong acid type NAR had a greater phosphorus-limiting effect on the soil microorganisms. The RDA analysis results showed that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was a significant factor affecting the soil enzyme activity and stoichiometric ratio, with interpretation rates of 40.2%. In conclusion, we believe that in the restoration of acidified soil, attention should be paid to the regulation of soil pH, reducing scour.

Abstract:Acid rain is one of the severest environmental issues globally. Relative to other global changes (e.g., warming, elevated atmospheric [CO2], and nitrogen deposition), however, acid rain has received less attention than its due. Soil fauna play important roles in multiple ecological processes, but how soil fauna community responds to acid rain remains less studied. This microcosm experiment was conducted using latosol with simulated acid rain (SAR) manipulations to observe potential changes in soil fauna community under acid rain stress. Four pH levels, i.e., pH 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5, and a neutral control of pH 7.0 were set according to the current pH condition and acidification trend of precipitation in southern China. As expected, we observed that the SAR treatments induced changes in soil fauna community composition and their ecological niches in the tested soil; the treatment effects tended to increase as acidity increased. This could be attributable to the environmental stresses (such as acidity, porosity and oxygen supply) induced by the SAR treatments. In addition to direct acidity effect, we propose that potential changes in permeability and movability of water and oxygen in soils induced by acid rain could also give rise to the observed shifts in soil fauna community composition. These are most likely indirect pathways of acid rain to affect belowground community. Moreover, we found that nematodes, the dominating soil fauna group in this study, moved downwards to mitigate the stress of acid rain. This is probably detrimental to soil fauna in the long term, due to the relatively severer soil conditions in the deep than surface soil layer. Our results suggest that acid rain could change soil fauna community and the vertical distribution of soil fauna groups, consequently changing the underground ecosystem functions such as organic matter decomposition and greenhouse gas emissions.

Comparative effects of the recovery from sulfuric and nitric acid rain on the soil enzyme activities and metabolic functions of soil microbial communities

Abstract:Acid rain (AR) is a serious issue in China, particularly in the Yangtze River Delta region where the economy has undergone rapid development. Over the last few years, the composition of acid rain in the Yangtze River Delta region has gradually changed from sulfuric acid rain (SAR) to nitric acid rain (NAR) due to controls on SO2 emissions, but increased NOx emissions. These changes have made ecosystems more complex. For this study, we halted AR treatments in Quercus acutissima forest plots that had received simulated AR for one year and monitored them from the following February to November. We investigated their soil resident enzyme and microbial metabolic activities, as well as community functional diversity. The results revealed that AR treatments negatively affected both the soil microbial activity and soil microbial community functional diversity; however, both managed to recover over time, once the AR treatments were stopped. During the AR treatment and recovery periods, four main categories (carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, amino acids, and polymers) were dominantly utilized. The utilization of pyruvic acid, which was affected by the AR treatments, as well as d-mannitol and tween 80, accounted for changes in the peak values of the C substrate groups during the AR treatment recovery period. Finally, changes in the activities of soil enzymes recorded following AR recovery, were closely related to the utilization of six C substrate groups. Our results suggested that the recovery of soils following the cessation of NAR stress was more rapid than from SAR. Further, that short-term NAR could be easily treated during the transformation from SAR to NAR in the Yangtze River Delta region. These results might also enrich the basic data relating to post-AR treatments on the soil environment, while having significance toward guiding further studies on the recovery of ecosystems from AR.
The Use of Biolog Eco Microplates to Compare the Effects of Sulfuric and Nitric Acid Rain on the Metabolic Functions of Soil Microbial Communities in a Subtropical Plantation Within the Yangtze River Delta Region

Abstract:China has recently undergone rapid economic development. However, it is the third-largest acid rain region in the world after Europe and North America, and the acid rain problem in the Yangtze River Delta region is particularly serious. Over recent years, the type of acid rain in the Yangtze River Delta region has changed from sulfuric acid rain (SAR) into nitric acid rain (NAR) because of SO2 and NOX emission controls. This has made ecosystems more complicated. In this study, we used Biolog Eco microplates to investigate the impact of simulated SAR and NAR on soil microbial community function over a year, beginning in March 2015. The results showed that the long-term simulated acid rain treatments reduced the average well color development (AWCD) of the carbon sources in soil microbial communities. Secondly, the effects of acid type on the utilization of polymers and amino acids increased in the later stages of the simulated acid rain treatments. Furthermore, the differences in the utilization of carbon sources caused by the simulated acid rain treatments were mainly due to soil microorganism utilization of L-serine, Tween40, D-mannitol, and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Finally, the physical and chemical properties of the soil were not significantly correlated with the utilization of the six C groups. Our results suggested that the two types of acid rain had different effects on soil microbial community function. When the type of acid rain changed, the stability of the ecosystem was challenged and the risk of ecosystem disruption greatly increased.
Comparative Effects of Sulfuric and Nitric Acid Rain on Litter Decomposition and Soil Microbial Community in Subtropical Plantation of Yangtze River Delta Region

Abstract:Acid rain is mainly caused by dissolution of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, and has a significant negative effect on ecosystems. The relative composition of acid rain is changing gradually from sulfuric acid rain (SAR) to nitric acid rain (NAR) with the rapidly growing amount of nitrogen deposition. In this study, we investigated the impact of simulated SAR and NAR on litter decomposition and the soil microbial community over four seasons since March 2015. Results first showed that the effects of acid rain on litter decomposition and soil microbial were positive in the early period of the experiment, except for SAR on soil microbes. Second, soil pH with NAR decreased more rapidly with the amount of acid rain increased in summer than with SAR treatments. Only strongly acid rain (both SAR and NAR) was capable of depressing litter decomposition and its inhibitory effect was stronger on leaf than on fine root litter. Meanwhile, NAR had a higher inhibitory effect on litter decomposition than SAR. Third, in summer, autumn and winter, PLFAs were negatively impacted by the increased acidity level resulting from both SAR and NAR. However, higher acidity level of NAR (pH=2.5) had the strongest inhibitory impact on soil microbial activity, especially in summer. In addition, Gram-negative bacteria (cy19:0) and fungi (18:1ω9) were more sensitive to both SAR and NAR, and actinomycetes was more sensitive to SAR intensity. Finally, soil total carbon, total nitrogen and pH were the most important soil property factors affecting soil microbial activity, and high microbial indices (fungi/bacteria) with high soil pH. Our results suggest that the ratio of SO42- to NO3- in acid rain is an important factor which could affect litter decomposition and soil microbial in subtropical forest of China.
Soil acidification impacts on belowground processes: a meta-analysis

Abstract:With continuous nitrogen (N) enrichment and sulfur (S) deposition, soil acidification has accelerated and become a global environmental issue. However, a full understanding of the general pattern of ecosystem belowground processes in response to soil acidification due to the impacting factors remains elusive. We conducted a meta-analysis of soil acidification impacts on belowground functions using 304 observations from 49 independent studies, mainly including soil cations, soil nutrient, respiration, root and microbial biomass. Our results show that acid addition significantly reduced soil pHby 0.24 on average, with less pH decrease in forest than non-forest ecosystems. The response ratio of soilpH was positively correlated with site precipitation and temperature, but negatively with initial soil pH. Soil base cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+) decreased while non-base cations (Al3+, Fe3+) increased with soil acidification. Soil respiration, fine root biomass, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen were significantly reduced by 14.7%, 19.1%, 9.6% and 12.1%, respectively, under acid addition. These indicate that soil carbon processes are sensitive to soil acidification. Overall, our meta-analysis suggests a strong negative impact of soil acidification on belowground functions, with the potential to suppress soil carbon emission. It also arouses our attention to the toxic effects of soil ions on terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract:In order to understand the impact of acid rain on soil respiration of Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata,a field study with 3 simulated acid rain levels(pH 2.5,4.0 and 5.6) were conducted.Measurement of soil respiration was made using a LI-8100 soil CO2 efflux system,the soil temperature at 10 cm depth and soil moisture at 5cm depth also were recorded at the same time.Results show that:(1) The soil pH values for P.massoniana and C.lanceolata decreased with the increase of rain acidity;(2) The soil respiration of P.Massoniana and C.lanceolata under different acid rain levels fluctuated with distinct seasonal patterns and the soil respiration rate was influenced significantly by soil temperature.The mean rate of soil respiration under pH2.5 level were 1.79 and 1.12μmol·m-2·s-1,and increased 14% and decreased 39% under control level(pH5.6) respectively.(3) Significant relationships between soil respiration and soil temperature at 10 cm under different acid rain levels of P.massoniana and C.lanceolata were found,which could be best described by exponential equations.However,the relationships between soil respiration and soil moistures at 5 cm depth were found in all levels are not significant.The relationships between soil respiration and soil temperature at 10 cm and soil moisture at 5 cm depth were described by multiple regression equation.The regression equations had more predicative capability than those using only temperature or moisture as a single independent variable.(4) The Q10(temperature sensitivity coefficient of soil respiration) values at pH 2.5 and 4.0 levels of P.Massoniana and C.lanceolata were 1.36,2.01 and 1.51,2.25,respectively.Compared with which at control level,the Q10 values tended to increase with rain acidity(pH4.0),and then(pH2.5) decreased.The results indicated that acid rain is an important factor in affecting soil CO2 efflux of P.Massoniana and C.lanceolata.

Abstract:Acid rain pollution is changing gradually from sulfuric acid rain (SAR) to mixed acid rain (MAR) and then to nitric acid rain (NAR) with the rapidly growing number of motor vehicles. The influences of changed acid rain types on ecosystem functions, particularly on litter decomposition, remain unclear. Two dominant litter types from a coniferous forest and a broad-leaved forest were incubated in microcosms with original forest soils and treated by five types of acid rain with different SO42− to NO3− ratios (1:0, 5:1, 1:1, 1:5, and 0:1). During a six-month incubation period, litter mass losses, soil microbial biomass, and enzyme activities were investigated. Results showed that various acid treatments inhibited litter decomposition, soil microbial biomass, and most enzyme activities, and the inhibitory effects of NAR were more significant than those of SAR and MAR. The resistance to external acid of microbial communities in broad-leaved forest was higher than that in coniferous forest. NAR and MAR treatments slowed down soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) mineralization by attenuating the correlations between litter mass losses and the enzymes involved in C, N, and P cycling. Results reveal that the ratio of SO42− to NO3− in acid rain is an important factor which profoundly influences litter decomposition process. In the future, a decreasing ratio of SO42− to NO3− in acid rain will be observed in subtropical forests. Thus, soil C would accumulate as a consequence of future acid precipitation, and this may seriously affect the balance of ecosystem C, N flux.

Soil acidification caused by acid deposition and N fertilization can significantly affect the composition and activity of microbial communities in acidic soils. However, whether and how acidification affects soil microorganisms and microbial‐mediated carbon (C) dynamics in alkaline soils are less known. Based on a 7‐year (2016–2023) acid addition experiment in an alkaline grassland (pH > 8) on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China, we examined the effects of soil acidification on soil fungal and bacterial communities and their C metabolism. Unexpectedly, our results showed that soil acidification mainly reduced fungal diversity, rather than bacterial diversity, possibly because acidification led to soil NH4+ accumulation and decreased plant diversity. Also, soil acidification reduced forb but increased grass biomass, and enhanced root production and turnover rate. Laboratory incubation experiments showed that changes in the microbial community and soil properties jointly promoted microbial decomposition of soil organic C (SOC), with more promotion for the decomposition of labile C (i.e. glucose) (+68.4%) than recalcitrant C (i.e. tannin) (+29.1%). Synthesis. Soil acidification reduced fungal diversity and stimulated SOC decomposition in an alkaline grassland. Given that pH decline can also accelerate soil inorganic C dissolution and carbonate‐derived CO2 release, these results highlight that soil acidification can exacerbate C loss in the alkaline soils over the long term. Abstract:The influence of acid rain on forest trees includes direct effects on foliage as well as indirect soil-mediated effects that cause a reduction in fine-root growth. In addition, the concentration of NO3- in acid rain increases with the rapidly growing of nitrogen deposition. In this study, we investigated the impact of simulated acid rain with different SO42-/NO3- (S/N) ratios, which were 5:1 (S), 1:1 (SN) and 1:5 (N), on fine-root growth from March 2015 to February 2016. Results showed that fine roots were more sensitive to the effects of acid rain than soils in the short-term. Both soil pH and fine root biomass (FRB) significantly decreased as acid rain pH decreased, and also decreased with the percentage of NO3- increased in acid rain. Acid rain pH significantly influenced soil total carbon and available potassium in summer. Higher acidity level (pH = 2.5), especially of the N treatments, had the strongest inhibitory impact on soil microbial activity after summer. The structural equation modelling results showed that acid rain S/N ratio and pH had stronger direct effects on FRB than indirect effects via changed soil and fine root properties. Fine-root element contents and antioxidant enzymes activities were significantly affected by acid rain S/N ratio and pH during most seasons. Fine-root Al ion content, Ca/Al, Mg/Al ratios and catalase activity were used as better indicators than soil parameters for evaluating the effects of different acid rain S/N ratios and pH on forests. Our results suggest that the ratio of SO42- to NO3- in acid rain is an important factor which could affect fine-root growth in subtropical forests of China. (c) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Carbon Compounds Differ in Their Effects on Soil pH and Microbial Respiration

Abstract:The mechanisms of soil pH change after the addition of organic matter to soil are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in pH after addition of carbon compounds over a 60-d incubation period. Seven organic compounds commonly found in plant residues (acetic acid, malic acid, citric acid, benzoic acid, ferulic acid, glucosamine hydrochloride and glucose) were selected based on the number and type of functional groups, and added at 0.5 mg C.g(-1) soil to two soils differing in initial pH. Addition of organic acids (R-COOH) immediately decreased pH. The magnitude of the pH decrease depended on dissociation constant of the acid and the initial soil pH. In subsequent incubation, pH was slowly returned to original levels as organic anions were mineralized, consuming H+ ions. Glucose which contains hydroxyl (R-OH) group did not alter soil pH. However, carboxyl (R-COOH) and amine (R-NH2) groups changed pH significantly. Soil respiration was also increased by the addition of C compounds. Cumulative respiration was higher in soil with malic acid, citric acid, ferulic acid and glucose than with other compounds. The addition of glucose, citric acid and malic acid resulted in priming as cumulative respiration was greater than the actual amount of C added.

Abstract:Higher ecosystem nitrogen (N) inputs resulting from human activities often suppress soil microbial biomass and respiration, thereby altering biogeochemical cycling. Soil acidification and carbon (C) limitation may drive these microbial responses, yet their relative importance remains elusive, which limits our understanding of the longer-term effects of increasing N inputs. In a field experiment with continuous N addition at seven different rates from 0 to 50 g N m-2 yr-1 over six years in a temperate grassland of Inner Mongolia, China, we examined the responses of soil microbial biomass and respiration to changes in soil acidity and C availability by adding lime and/or glucose to soil samples. Soil microbial biomass and respiration did only weakly respond to increasing soil pH, but increased strongly in response to higher C availability with increasing N addition rates. Soil net N immobilization increased in response to glucose addition and soil microbial biomass increased at higher rates than microbial respiration along the gradient of previous N addition rates, both suggesting increasingly reinforced microbial C limitation with increasing N addition. Our results provide clear evidence for strong N-induced microbial C limitation, but only little support for soil acidity effects within the initial pH range of 4.73 to 7.86 covered by our study. Field data support this conclusion by showing reduced plant C allocation belowground in response to N addition, resulting in soil microbial C starvation over the long term. In conclusion, soil microbial biomass and respiration under N addition were strongly dependent on C availability, most likely originating from plant belowground C inputs, and was much less affected by changes in soil pH. Our data help clarify a long-standing debate about how increasing N input rates affect soil microbial biomass and respiration, and improve the mechanistic understanding of the linkages between ecosystem N enrichment and C cycling.

Abstract:Hara‐kiri is a unique Japanese custom, primarily stemming from the manners and customs that a samurai held. The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical features of individuals who attempted suicide by hara‐kiri. We enrolled 647 patients who had attempted suicide. Clinical features were compared between those who had employed hara‐kiri and those who had used other methods. 25 of the 647 subjects had attempted suicide by hara‐kiri. The ratio of men to women and the proportion of patients with mood disorders were significantly higher in the hara‐kiri group than in the other methods group. The average length of stay in either the hospital or in the intensive care unit was also longer in the hara‐kiri group than in the other methods group. Hara‐kiri is an original Japanese method of attempting suicide, and suicide attempts by hara‐kiri may be aimed at maintaining a reputation or taking responsibility.
Soil pH Responses to Simulated Acid Rain Leaching in Three Agricultural Soils

Abstract:Soil has the nature of acidity and alkalinity, mostly indicated by soil pH that could greatly affect soil ecological processes and functions. With exogenous inputs of acidic materials (such as acid rain), soils may more or less resist to maintain their pH levels within specific thresholds by various buffering processes. It has been well established that soil properties such as cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (SOM), and clay content play important roles in mitigating the effects of acid inputs, but the factors varied across soils. This microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate changes in the soil pH and quantitatively estimate the critical pH threshold of simulated acid rain for three highly weathered soils (red soil, lateritic red soil, and latosol) that are typical soil types widely distributed across the world’s subtropical and tropical climatic zones, as well as important influential factors, after continuously adding different levels of simulated acid rain on the surface of soil cores. The results showed that the change in the soil pH was not significantly different among the three soils, although it was exponentially related to soil CEC and clay content. Resultantly, the latosol that had high soil CEC and clay content was more resistant to simulated acid rain, especially when relatively weak simulated acid rain treatments were applied. The lateritic red soil that contained the lowest soil CEC and clay content showed the greatest decline in the soil pH under the strongest simulated acid rain treatment of pH being 2.5. Furthermore, we estimated the critical pH threshold of simulated acid rain for the three soils and observed that it was considerably different among the soils. Surprisingly, the pH threshold of simulated acid rain was also positively related to the soil CEC and clay content, therefore making the highest pH threshold in the latosol. Our results imply that soil CEC and clay content may play critical roles in the soil acid-buffering processes from two aspects; it could not only contribute to the soil acid-buffering capacity, but also affect the threshold of acidity of acid rain below which abrupt soil acidification may occur.
