Construction of an Arabic reading test for assessment of dyslexic children

Abstract:Objective: Dyslexia is a specific language-based disorder of constitutional origin, characterized by difficulties in phonological processing. The Arabic language differs in many aspects from foreign languages and the few previously designed Arabic tests for assessment of dyslexia did not pay attention to phonological awareness problems. This necessitates the design of an Arabic test which could properly assign specific difficulties among Arabic reading dyslexic children, including phonological awareness as a major contributing factor for dyslexia. Methods: The study was carried out in Assiut City, Egypt, during the period from September 1999 to the end of January 2001. The newly designed Arabic Reading Test (ART) in this work passed through many stages. Firstly, test construction by 11 Arabic teachers (specific judges). Secondly it was applied, in a pilot study, to 50 normal students (9-10 years old) to ascertain clarity of the test. Then test standardization was proven through application on a second sample (n=252 students), and third sample (n=58 dyslexics). Results: The reliability of the ART was proven by the test-retest method (r=0.913, p<0.01). Validity was proven by judgment validity, internal consistency validity (ranged from 0.238 for auditory perception to 0.940 for phonological awareness and spelling), contrasted group validity, and criterion related validity (in relation to Schonell r=0.859, Awaad reading r=0.817, Awaad comprehension r=671, mid-term Arabic scores r=0.686). Conclusion: The ART was thus proven to be highly reliable, and valid for assessment of dyslexia among Arabic reading children. It has great value in predicting dyslexia even among preschool age Arabic speaking children, through assessment of their phonological awareness skills, and thus, remediation programs can be properly and early directed.
Utility of deficit-specific computer-based training on children with temporal processing deficit

Abstract:Purpose: Children with temporal processing deficits struggle to detect and discriminate syllables, phonemes, and stress patterns in speech. To overcome these deficits, computer-based auditory training programs have been widely used as one of the rehabilitation alternatives in recent years. The present study aimed to examine the usefulness of one such computer-based temporal processing training (CBTPT) module on children with temporal processing deficits. Method: Sixteen children (8-15 years) with temporal processing deficits were enrolled in the study, further divided into active (CBTPT) and placebo (placebo training) groups. Further, 8 typically developing children (no training) were enrolled as a comparison group. The auditory outcome measures included Duration Pattern Test (DPT), Gap Detection Test (GDT), Dichotic CV (DCV), and Speech-in-Noise-Indian English (SPIN-IE) assessed before and after training for all three groups. Results: Wilcoxon-sign rank test showed a statically significant difference between pre and post-test scores of DPT, GDT, and SPIN (p < 0.001) except DCV among the active group. However, no significant differences were noted in the pre and post-test scores among the placebo and TD groups. Mann Whitney U test showed a significant difference in DPT and SPIN post-training scores between active and placebo groups; active and TD group; placebo and TD group. Conclusion: From the above finding, it is inferred that the CBTPT module is useful among children having temporal processing deficits.
Cognitive-Motor Training Improves Reading-Related Executive Functions: A Randomized Clinical Trial Study in Dyslexia

Abstract:Children with developmental dyslexia (DD) often struggle with executive function difficulties which can continue into adulthood if not addressed. This double-blinded randomized clinical trial study evaluated the short-term effects of the Verbal Working Memory-Balance (VWM-B) program on reading-related executive functions, reading skills, and reading comprehension in Persian children with DD. The active control group [12 children with DD with a mean age of 9 years (SD = 0.90)] received training using the single-task VWM program, while the experiment group [15 children with DD with a mean age of 8 years (SD = 0.74)] received training with the dual-task VWM-B program. Both groups received fifteen training sessions, and assessments were conducted before and after the intervention. The groups were homogenized for possible confounders of age, gender, IQ level, and attention level. The study employed separate mixed ANOVA analyses to estimate the impact of training programs on various measured functions. Significant improvements were observed in the outcome measures of backward digit span, text comprehension, verbal fluency, Stroop color–word test and interference, and the reading subtests. Additionally, significant correlations were found between reading skills and backward digit span, text comprehension, verbal fluency, and Stroop variables. In conclusion, the dual-task VWM-B program was found to be more effective than the single-task VWM program in improving selective attention, cognitive inhibition, verbal working memory capacity, information processing speed, naming ability, and lexical access speed. These enhanced executive functions were associated with improved reading skills in children with DD.

Abstract:Abstract Dyslexia is a reading difficulty that can be found everywhere, regardless of a person’s ethnicity or race. The manifestation of dyslexia depends on the structure and orthography of a language. There is a lack of research into Arabic dyslexia, particularly the benefits of adaptive learning in this area. The study presented in this paper aimed to understand the impact on learners’ reading performance, satisfaction and behaviour when matching e-training material with learner attributes. The focus is on learners with short vowel dyslexia. The study was undertaken with 22 female primary school children in Saudi Arabia, all of whom were native Arabic speakers. These children were divided into two groups: a matched group (which included learners with short vowel dyslexia) and a mismatched group (which included learners with vowel dyslexia). An e-training system ‘DysTypeTrain2’ was designed and developed to support the study. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected from (i) pre- and post-test results to calculate the improvement in reading performance and (ii) learner satisfaction scores. The qualitative data were collected from observations of learners’ behaviour. It was found that the learners’ reading performance and satisfaction improved in both experimental conditions (short vowel dyslexia group and vowel dyslexia group), regardless of their Arabic dyslexia type, indicating that the system was effective and the learning process was improved. Further, the learners were happy and excited about the system.

Abstract:Background: The role of prosody in language acquisition and effective communication is documented in research. Nevertheless, rehabilitation of prosodic skills in children with hearing impairment using hearing aids or cochlear implants is relatively neglected compared to other speech and language areas. Objective: To detect the effect of prosodic rehabilitation using the adapted translated version of the “Prosody Treatment Program” on expression of prosodic features in Egyptian Arabic-speaking hearing-impaired school-age children fitted with hearing aids or cochlear implant devices in comparison to conventional auditory and language rehabilitation. Methods: This study was conducted on 34 children with sensorineural hearing loss in a randomized controlled trial design. Children were randomly divided into 2 groups, group A (cases) and group B (control), by block randomization. Both groups were initially evaluated for their prosodic skills using objective measures. Group A received rehabilitation for prosody using the Prosody Treatment Program for 1 h, once per week for 3 months, while group B received conventional auditory and language training and served as their control. Both groups were re-evaluated using the same protocol after 3 months of therapy. Results: A statistically significant improvement of most of the assessed prosodic parameters in group A was shown when comparing the pretherapy and posttherapy scores, as well as comparing between both studied groups after therapy. Conclusions: Prosody is amenable to motor learning. The Prosody Treatment Program seems to be an effective rehabilitation tool in improving some prosodic skills of hearing-impaired children. Prosodic rehabilitation showed superiority to conventional auditory and language training in improving the expression of some prosodic features and pragmatic language skills.

Abstract:Categorical perception of phonemes and visual attention span are cognitive processes that contribute independently to poor reading skills in developmental dyslexia. We here explored whether training programs specifically targeting one or the other process do improve reading performance in dyslexic children. The dyslexic participants were trained using either the RapDys© program designed to improve phonemic perception or the MAEVA© program targeting visual attention span. Each participant was provided the two programs successively for intensive training. Results show specific effects of RapDys© on phonemic discrimination and pseudo-word reading. MAEVA© specifically improved visual attention span and irregular word reading. Phonemic awareness and regular word reading improved after application of both training programs, suggesting similar positive effects of both methods although effects of concomitant phonic training cannot be ruled out (as there was no control group). The overall findings suggest that both categorical perception and visual attention span remediation contribute to reading.

Abstract:Perceptual learning refers to the improvement of perceptual performance as a function of training. Recent studies found that auditory perceptual learning may improve phonological skills in individuals with developmental dyslexia in alphabetic writing system. However, whether auditory perceptual learning could also benefit the reading skills of those learning the Chinese logographic writing system is, as yet, unknown. The current study aimed to investigate the remediation effect of auditory temporal perceptual learning on Mandarin-speaking school children with developmental dyslexia. Thirty children with dyslexia were screened from a large pool of students in 3th-5th grades. They completed a series of pretests and then were assigned to either a non-training control group or a training group. The training group worked on a pure tone duration discrimination task for 7 sessions over 2 weeks with thirty minutes per session. Post-tests immediately after training and a follow-up test 2 months later were conducted. Analyses revealed a significant training effect in the training group relative to non-training group, as well as near transfer to the temporal interval discrimination task and far transfer to phonological awareness, character recognition and reading fluency. Importantly, the training effect and all the transfer effects were stable at the 2-month follow-up session. Further analyses found that a significant correlation between character recognition performance and learning rate mainly existed in the slow learning phase, the consolidation stage of perceptual learning, and this effect was modulated by an individuals' executive function. These findings indicate that adaptive auditory temporal perceptual learning can lead to learning and transfer effects on reading performance, and shed further light on the potential role of basic perceptual learning in the remediation and prevention of developmental dyslexia.
Impact of an Auditory Processing Training Program on Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:Purpose: Children and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often report and exhibit significant auditory processing difficulties, particularly in background noise. This study extends our previous work by examining the potential benefits of a 12-week auditory processing training (APT) program designed to address the auditory processing difficulties in individuals with ASD via auditory training and the use of remote-microphone technology. Effect sizes of training benefits also were calculated, and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to consolidate performance across various tests into fewer meaningful constructs related to auditory processing in this population. Method: Twenty-eight children and young adults with ASD participated in a 12-week APT program that included one-on-one speech-in-noise training, computerized dichotic training, and use of remote-microphone technology at home and at school. Before and after training, each participant completed tests of speech recognition in noise, spatial processing, binaural integration, and general auditory processing skills. Results: Significant performance improvements and medium-to-large effect sizes were found across most test measures after the participants completed the APT program and when using the remote-microphone system. PCA identified strong relationships among all test measures as well as documented the relationships between behavioral performance, training duration, and training improvements. Conclusions: The APT program significantly improved spatial processing, binaural integration, phonological processing, auditory memory, auditory cohesion, and speech recognition in noise in individuals with ASD when the remote-microphone system was used. PCA analysis of pre- and posttraining data showed a strong relationship among all test measures, suggesting an abbreviated auditory processing test battery may be feasible for individuals with ASD. Training duration (minutes) and training improvements were associated with performance outcomes measured by the test battery.

Abstract:The present study explores comparatively the effectiveness of a cognitive (verbal short-term memory (vSTM), verbal working memory (vWM)) and of a linguistic training (10-week duration each) in the diffusion of gains in cognitive abilities (vSTM and vWM) of in school-aged Greek-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD). To this purpose, two computerized training programs i.e., a linguistic and a cognitive one, were developed and applied to three groups (A, B, and C) of children with DLD (N = 49, in total). There were three assessments with two vSTM tasks (non-word repetition and forward digit span) and a vWM task (backward digit span): pre-therapeutically (time 1), where no significant between-group differences were found, post-therapeutically I (time 2), and post-therapeutically II (time 3) and two training phases. In phase Ι, group A received meta-syntactic training, whereas group B vSTM/vWM training and group C received no training. In phase ΙΙ, a reversal of treatment was performed for groups A and B: group A received vSTM/vWM while group B meta-syntactic training. Again, group C received no training. Overall, the results indicated a significant performance improvement for the treatment groups and revealed beneficial far-transfer effects as language therapy can affect vSTM and vWM in addition to direct and near transfer effects. In addition, the intervention type order affected performance as follows: first, better performance on the vSTM task (non-word repetition) was shown when the linguistic treatment was delivered first; second, better performance on the vWM in Time 2 and Time 3 was shown by group B, for which the cognitive treatment was delivered first. Concluding, not only intervention type but also intervention type order can affect performance in DLD.

Abstract:Abstract Background Children with hearing impairment are deprived of their source of linguistic input which in turn leads to linguistic and prosodic deficits that negatively affect language and social development. Linguistic aspects other than prosody have received considerable attention in studies concerned with hearing-impaired children with little literature addressing how to improve their affective prosodic deficits. The aim of the current study is to adapt and apply the “prosody treatment program” and detect the effect of prosodic rehabilitation on affect production and language development in Egyptian hearing-impaired children. This study was conducted on 21 children with sensorineural hearing loss. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups, group A (cases) and group B (control) by block randomization. The subjects of the study were evaluated pre and post-therapy by a protocol for assessment of their prosodic skills using subjective and objective measures. Both groups received the usual auditory and language rehabilitation therapy. The case group additionally received rehabilitation for prosody using the “prosody treatment program” for 3 months. Results Results showed a statistically significant improvement in the subjective scores and most of the objective scores of the assessed affective prosodic skills when comparing pre-therapy and post-therapy scores in the cases group, and when comparing both studied groups post-therapy. Conclusions Prosodic training has an additional benefit evident in improving affective prosodic skills of hearing-impaired children compared to conventional therapy alone with a positive effect on their linguistic development. The impact of temporal processing on reading in dyslexia with rapid automatized naming deficits

Abstract:In the present study, we aimed to investigate the different impacts of temporal processing on reading by Chinese children with and without dyslexia. In total, 27 children with dyslexia who had a deficit in rapid automatized naming (RAN) (D_R), 37 children with dyslexia who had deficits in both RAN and phonological awareness (PA) (D_RP), and 40 typically developing children (TD) were recruited in Taiwan. The children were asked to complete non-verbal intelligence, PA, RAN, Chinese character reading tasks and an auditory temporal order judgement (ATOJ) task. Our results of a multiple regression model showed that the ATOJ accounted for unique variances in the reading differences between the children in the D_R and TD groups; performance was controlled for non-verbal intelligence, PA and RAN tasks. Theoretically, we provide possible explanations for the controversial findings in the field of Chinese children with dyslexia and, practically, suggest different interventions should be provided for children with dyslexia with different underlying impairments.
Effects of auditory processing training on speech perception and brainstem plastisity in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract:Objective Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. A major problem of ASD is speech perception impairment in the presence of background noise. Additionally, researchers have reported temporal auditory processing impairment in patients with ASD. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of a temporal-based training program on improvement of speech perception in the presence of noise using the speech auditory brainstem response (sABR). Materials & Methods Twenty-eight adolescents with high functional ASD with the mean age of 14.35±1.86 years were randomly selected and divided into an ASD group (11 males and three females) and a control group (13 males and one female). All the subjects had a normal hearing and intelligence threshold and had no history of neurological disorder. A speech perception test was performed in signal-to-noise ratios of 0 and +10. The intervention group received a temporal processingbased auditory training program, and the control group received a conventional training program. A P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results After training, speech perception in the presence of noise was significantly higher (P <0.001) and the latency of all sABR waves was lower in the intervention group compared to the control group. Conclusion Improvement of speech perception in noisy environments and the reduced latency of sABR waves following a temporal processingbased training program highlight the role of brainstem neural plasticity in speech processing.

Reading Performance is Enhanced by Visual Texture Discrimination Training in Chinese-speaking Children with Developmental Dyslexia.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:High order cognitive processing and learning, such as reading, interact with lower-level sensory processing and learning. Previous studies have reported that visual perceptual training enlarges visual span and, consequently, improves reading speed in young and old people with amblyopia. Recently, a visual perceptual training study in Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia found that the visual texture discrimination thresholds of these children in visual perceptual training significantly correlated with their performance in Chinese character recognition, suggesting that deficits in visual perceptual processing/learning might partly underpin the difficulty in reading Chinese.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:To further clarify whether visual perceptual training improves the measures of reading performance, eighteen children with dyslexia and eighteen typically developed readers that were age- and IQ-matched completed a series of reading measures before and after visual texture discrimination task (TDT) training. Prior to the TDT training, each group of children was split into two equivalent training and non-training groups in terms of all reading measures, IQ, and TDT. The results revealed that the discrimination threshold SOAs of TDT were significantly higher for the children with dyslexia than for the control children before training. Interestingly, training significantly decreased the discrimination threshold SOAs of TDT for both the typically developed readers and the children with dyslexia. More importantly, the training group with dyslexia exhibited significant enhancement in reading fluency, while the non-training group with dyslexia did not show this improvement. Additional follow-up tests showed that the improvement in reading fluency is a long-lasting effect and could be maintained for up to two months in the training group with dyslexia.CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE:These results suggest that basic visual perceptual processing/learning and reading ability in Chinese might at least partially rely on overlapping mechanisms.
Assessment of Central Auditory Processing Impairment and Cognitive Profiles in Children with Specific Learning Disabilities

Abstract:Background: Specific learning disabilities (SLDs) are a significant factor in children's academic underachievement. Around 46% of SLDs children have comorbid auditory processing disorder (APD). Cognitive functions are the ability to think and plan. Consequently, learning and academic progress are significantly affected by these disabilities. Objective: Our study sought to evaluate whether children with SLDs have both central auditory processing (CAP) and cognitive abnormalities. Patients and methods: A case-control study was conducted on 36 children from different schools of Zagazig city, Alsharquia government, Egypt, allocated into 2 groups, 18 with SLDs and academic underachievement (study group I) and 18 without SLDs (control group II). Medical history, otological evaluation, basic audiological examination, central screening tests (speech in noise (SPIN), dichotic digit (DDT), and pitch pattern sequence (PPS)), test for temporal resolution (Gaps in noise, (GIN)), IQ, and visuomotor ability evaluation were used to collect data. Results: The SLDs group had lower DDT, PPS, total score and percent of GIN test versus the control groups. At the same time, the approximate threshold of GIN test in the SLDs group was significantly greater relative to the normal group. Regarding Bender-Gestalt test (BGT) test, there was highly statically significant increase scores on copy and recall phases among control group. A significant positive relationship was detected between the BGT copy and recall phases and PPS on both sides. Conclusion: Our findings endorsed our hypothesis that most children with SLDs had subnormal scores on CAP abilities and cognitive function. The most severely affected CAP were temporal resolution and temporal ordering. Most SLDs children had visuomotor affection.
The impact of phonemic processing instruction on the reading achievement of reading-disabled children

Abstract:It is hypothesized that a phonemic processing deficit is a primary causal factor in the reading problems of many children with developmental dyslexia. An instructional model which emphasizes phonics instruction as a key in the treatment of children with reading disorders is presented. Procedures for the application of this model in a parent-involvement clinic program are described. Results from two typical children from the clinic sample who had received treatment for more than a year are presented. One Fourth-Grade child, who began the program with a 1 1/2-year reading deficit, was reading grade-appropriate material and scoring about 1 year above grade-norms on a standardized test after 14 months of clinic treatment. The second child began the treatment program as a Sixth Grader who was virtually a non-reader. After 1 1/2 years of intervention, this child had attained a Third-Grade reading level, but was still nearly 4 years behind in reading. The pretest error responses to individual words made by both children are reviewed to demonstrate the underlying phonetic deficiency--an apparent difficulty with vowel sound correspondence. Averaged reading achievement results from 13 children who had received 3 months of instruction in an experimental study in which the instructional model is being used are presented. Results indicate a dramatic change in the children's rate of reading achievement during treatment. The children were divided into three groups on the basis of a measure of the transfer of phonic skills: normal transfer, poor transfer which improved dramatically in the first 3 months of treatment, and poor transfer which failed to improve. Analysis of the achievement data of these three groups indicates that the second group improved more rapidly than did the other two groups. It is suggested that further analyses of phonic transfer data may prove to be very instructive concerning the causes and treatment of developmental dyslexia.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Urinothorax is defined as the presence of urine in the pleural cavity. This condition is due to the leakage of urine from the peritoneal and retroperitoneal space into the pleural space. We report a case of urinothorax after total abdominal hysterectomy. CASE: A premenopausal woman underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy for pelvic pain, requiring extensive dissection. Her postoperative course was complicated by right urinothorax, which was diagnosed after a diagnostic thoracocentesis and resolved after a therapeutic thoracocentesis and the repair of the urinary bladder rent. CONCLUSION: Urinothorax can occur in cases of undiagnosed urinary tract injury. It presents as postoperative shortness of breath and pleural effusion and should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
Impact of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy on Central Auditory Processing in Children

Abstract:Background: Anatomical and functional integrity of the auditory pathways, from peripheral to central structures, is essential for proper processing of auditory stimuli and a satisfactory development of language, speech, and learning. Neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, are one of the possible causes of central auditory disorders. Objective: The aim of the current work was to study the effect of temporal lobe epilepsy on auditory temporal resolution ability in children. Patients and methods: Thirty children suffering from temporal lobe epilepsy, with age ranged from 12 to 16 years, were included in this study. Also, 10 apparently healthy children with age and gender matched with the study group were taken as a control group. All children were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, cognitive and basic audiological evaluation. Also, questionnaire for central auditory processing disorders in children was applied and assessment of temporal resolution ability using Gaps In Noise (GIN) test. Results: Children with temporal lobe epilepsy had significantly increased gap detection threshold (GDTh) values, and lower percentage of correct gap detection than control group. 86.7% of epileptic children demonstrated abnormal scores for approximate GIN threshold (gap detection threshold above 6 msec, with sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 100% for right ear and 86% and 100% for left ear. Conclusion: Temporal resolution deficit is a comorbidity in children with temporal lobe epilepsy and is increased with longer duration of epilepsy. Impairment was not affected by age, gender, medications or duration of treatment. Also, there was no significant difference between both ears in GIN test, reflecting no laterality effect.
The Effectiveness of Interventions for Developmental Dyslexia: Rhythmic Reading Training Compared With Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation and Action Video Games

Abstract:Developmental dyslexia is a very common learning disorder causing an impairment in reading ability. Although the core deficit underlying dyslexia is still under debate, significant agreement is reached in the literature that dyslexia is related to a specific deficit in the phonological representation of speech sounds. Many studies also reported an association between reading skills and music. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing basic auditory skills of children with DD may impact reading abilities. However, music education alone failed to produce improvements in reading skills comparable to those resulting from traditional intervention methods for DD. Therefore, a computer-assisted intervention method, called Rhythmic Reading Training (RRT), which combines sublexical reading exercises with rhythm processing, was implemented. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of RRT and that of an intervention resulting from the combination of two yet validated treatments for dyslexia, namely, Bakker's Visual Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation (VHSS) and the Action Video Game Training (AVG). Both interventions, administered for 13 h over 9 days, significantly improved reading speed and accuracy of a group of Italian students with dyslexia aged 8-14. However, each intervention program produced improvements that were more evident in specific reading parameters: RRT was more effective for improvement of pseudoword reading speed, whereas VHSS + AVG was more effective in increasing general reading accuracy. Such different effects were found to be associated with different cognitive mechanisms, namely, phonological awareness for RRT and rapid automatized naming for VHSS + AVG, thus explaining the specific contribution of each training approach. The Effectiveness of Phonics and Whole-word Techniques on Improving English Reading Skills of Dyslexic Students

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of phonics and whole-word techniques on improving the English reading skills of dyslexic students. Methods: The research method was a pre-test, posttest comparison group design. The population consisted of all elementary dyslexic students in Ardabil city. 30 participants were selected by availability sampling, and they were randomly assigned into two experimental groups (conditions of phonics (dealing with the individual sounds and letters of a word)) and whole-word (taking a word as a complete unit of meaning). To better understand both teaching techniques and to have an accurate understanding of the quality and how to improve the comprehension and learning of words and its impact on reading skill, the sample was homogenized through a pre-test using Vocabulary Levels Test. Then, they participated in 12 sessions each 60 minutes receiving instruction and practice on learning vocabulary through phonics and whole-word methods to see their influence on their reading skill. Results: After performing the treatment, the results were compared through covariance analysis and independent samples t-test. The findings showed an average amount of progress in terms of vocabulary in both groups. However, those language learners in the whole-word group outperformed those in the phonics group when it came to the reading skill (P<0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that lexical teaching methods (word-based) and phonics (sound-based) have a significant effect on improving the reading skills of dyslexic learners, however, the contribution of the whole-word method is more than that of the phonics technique.

Abstract:The research had age-related basic English language learners with dyslexia drawn from Abha City, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The researchers were pursuing the question of the effectiveness of multimodal methods in building the reading fluency and comprehension of ELLs. Researchers implemented a quasi-experimental study with a random-assignment approach: the sample was divided between the experimental group and the control group of sixty students. The control group experiences learning through conventional instructional schemes. We used the pre-and post-test of reading to measure the fluency and comprehension levels with additional feedback received from the students to evaluate our class’s effectiveness. Through the implementation of this research, there was a remarkable increase in both reading fluency and the ability to understand, by the children involved. Moreover, students of the experimental groups exhibited significantly better perceptions of the course compared to the control groups than the others. Numerical analysis of significance having t-tests, ANOVA, and regressive analysis showed that multimodal technique was significant and positive. A final correlation study showed a positive relationship between students' favourable appraisals of a multimodal teaching method and their reading skills. It may be implied that dyslexic English language learners (ELLs) should use multimodal treatment in multifaceted settings to learn all academic subjects. The foci are to lend weight to educational policies that endorse the approach of inclusive teaching methods with educators. The paper also focuses on the fact that there is a need for the provision of teachers with the needed resources and skills development through teacher training. Consequently, how students are taught must include several modes that are appropriate to the distinct needs of all learners, including those with dyslexia. That's because blending all those methods supports students with language-based learning difficulties.
