Abstract:Objective: Condylar fractures remain the most controversial topic in maxillofacial trauma. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with use of an extraoral approach has certain benefits over the nonsurgical treatment. Concerns, however, remain about the risk of facial nerve injury, postoperative facial nerve weakness, and facial scarring when operating in this region despite the various extraoral approaches that have been developed. The recently popularized endoscope-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) is claimed to provide better results because it is minimally invasive, provides excellent visibility, and eliminates surgical scarring and the risk of facial nerve injury. This study, therefore, aims to compare the retromandibular (extraoral) approach and EAORIF for the treatment of condylar fractures. Study design: A prospective analysis of 32 cases of condylar fractures that reported to the SDM Craniofacial Centre (Dharwad, India) was carried out. Sixteen patients had been treated with the retromandibular (RM) approach, and 16 had undergone EAORIF in the period from 2012-2017. Patients were evaluated for clinical parameters, such as fracture site, displacement, and surgical duration, as well as for functional parameters, such as occlusion, maximum interincisal opening, deviation of mouth on lateral movements, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and clicking, and facial nerve weakness. Statistical significance was elicited with P < .05. Results: The patients subjected to either approach had suffered fractures of the low condylar neck and the subcondyle. Maximum interincisal opening, mandibular deviation, occlusion, and TMJ function at postoperative month 6 were comparable between the groups. Although no permanent facial nerve injury was seen in this study, the incidence of transient facial nerve weakness was higher in the RM group (56.25%) compared with the EAORIF group (6.25%) (P = .036). The surgical time was longer in the EAORIF group (RM: 107+/- 19.7 minutes and EAORIF: 155 +/- 18.2 minutes) (P = .04). The rest of the parameters were comparable between both groups. Conclusions: Although there is consensus on closed reduction in pediatric and adult condylar head fractures, the role of a surgical approach to treatment of displaced condylar neck and subcondylar fractures remains controversial. In our study, both surgical approaches were found to be suitable for the treatment of these fractures.

Abstract:Purpose The study investigates whether the intraoral approach to mandibular open reduction and internal fixation, through exposure to the oral cavity's microbiome, results in higher infection rates compared to the extraoral approach, thus addressing a critical public health concern, health-care costs, and aiming to guide effective clinical practice. Methods In this systematic review with meta-analyses, a review of the literature was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using Embase and PubMed for articles published between 1989 and 2023. Inclusion criteria targeted studies on open reduction and internal fixation mandibular fractures comparing intraoral and extraoral approaches and reporting infection rates. Exclusion criteria eliminated non-English articles, case reports, and studies with insufficient approach-specific data. The primary outcome was the postoperative infection rate, with surgical approach as the predictor. Covariates such as age, sex, diabetes, and smoking status were included when reported. Data were analyzed using R software, employing random-effects models due to anticipated heterogeneity (I 2 statistics). Results From 61 studies, 11 provided direct comparisons involving 1,317 patients—937 intraoral and 380 extraoral. Infection rates were 5.9% for intraoral and 10% for extraoral approaches. Pooled relative risk was 0.94 [95% confidence interval, 0.63, 1.39], suggesting no significant risk difference. Prevalence of infections was estimated at 9% for intraoral and 6.1% for extraoral procedures, with significant heterogeneity (I 2 = 84% for intraoral and 56% for extraoral). Conclusion Our meta-analysis found no significant difference in infection rates between the two approaches. There is opportunity to expand on reporting complication rates comparing the various approaches to mandibular fixation. Until these data are presented, surgeon preference may dictate the operative approach to expose the mandible for reduction and fixation.

Abstract:Peer-reviewed published studies on tibial plateau fractures treated with either open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) or circular external fixation were reviewed to compare functional, radiological outcomes, postoperative complications, and reoperation rates between the two methods. A systematic search of various databases including Medline, Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials (CENTRAL), ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar from inception until June 2019 was performed. 17 studies with 1168 participants were included in the review. Most of the studies (76%) were retrospective in nature and had low or unclear bias risks. Incidence of total infection (Odds ratio [OR], 2.58; 95% CI, 1.33-5.02) and malunions (OR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.12-5.84) were higher and length of hospital stay was shorter in patients treated with circular external fixator (Mean difference [MD], -6.1; 95% CI, -11.1--1.19). There were no differences in the incidence of secondary osteoarthritis (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 0.92-2.42), range of motion (MD, 2.28; 95% CI, -11.27-15.82) non-union (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 0.14-14.27) and reoperation rates (OR, 1.84; 95% CI, 0.90-3.78) between the two groups. Results from this investigation suggest that circular fixation may offer some advantages over ORIF such as a shortened length of hospital stay and early return to preinjury activities. Definitive clinical recommendations cannot be made as it also presents higher rates of postoperative complications than ORIF.

Abstract:The management of fractures of the mandibular condyle continues to be controversial. This is in part attributable to a misinterpretation of the literature from decades prior, a lack of uniformity of classification of the various anatomical components of the mandibular condyle, and a perceived potential to cause harm through the open approach based in part on the surgeon's lack of a critical examination of the literature. This review explores the key historical articles that deal with the management of mandibular condyle fractures, and those modern-day contributions that represent the state of the art. The authors' intention was to provide the reader with an objective summary of the management of this form of injury, to place its management into a modern-day perspective, and perhaps to minimize the perception of controversy.

Open Treatment with Ultrasound Activated Resorbable Pins Versus Closed Treatment of Adult Mandible Condylar Head Fractures

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with ultrasound activated resorbable pins (UARPs) is superior to closed treatment of condylar head (CH) fractures. The investigators hypothesized that fixation with UARPs is superior to closed treatment of CH fracture. Methods: It was a prospective pilot study on CH fracture patients. Patients in closed group were managed conservatively with arch bar fixation and elastic guidance. Fixation in open group was done with UARPs. Assessment was done for primary objective of stability of fixation by UARPs and secondary objectives of functional outcome and complications. Results: The study sample included 20 patients (10 in each group). 10 patients (11 joints) in closed group and 9 patients (10 joints) in open group were available for final follow-up. 5 joints showed re-dislocation of fractured segment, 1 joint showed slightly imperfect but adequate fixation and 4 joints showed adequate fixation in open group. In the closed group, displaced fragment was fused with mandible at displaced position in all the joints. All the joints showed resorption of medial condylar head at 3 months follow-up in open group. There was minimal resorption of condyle in closed group. Occlusion was deranged in 3 patients in open group and 1 patient in closed group. MIO, pain scores and lateral excursions were equal in both the groups. Conclusion: The results of the present study rejected the hypothesis that fixation of CH with UARPs was superior than closed treatment. There was resorption of medial CH fragment in open group as compared to closed group.

Encompassing a range of studies, the review, in accordance with PRISMA 2020 recommendations, meticulously examines various fixation methods, assessing their efficacy in achieving stability of fracture, early healing, and mobilisation. The comparison of these methods highlights their unique advantages and limitations, and demonstrates the need for more nuanced and precise approaches. The review emphasises evidence-based methodology in the management of anterior mandibular fractures (AMF), highlighting the benefits offered by innovative techniques such as 3D miniplates. It also acknowledges the advantages provided by older fixation devices such as lag screws. The importance of postoperative outcomes and the need for tailored treatment strategies are recognised, considering the complex nature of these fractures.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo systematically evaluate the surgical and non-surgical treatment of condylar fracture using Meta-analysis system.METHODSThe key words: mandible, condyle, fracture and treatment/therapy were adopted to search for the objective articles from following Data-base: Medline, Embase, CCTR and CNKI. The available data were statistically dealt with by software package (RevMan 4.1).RESULTSIn 172 associated articles, only 10 (5.8%) fulfilled the entrance criteria, involving 711 cases. A total of 307 patients underwent surgical treatment due to severely displacement or dislocation of fragment, 239 of the m (78.0%) being subcondylar fracture. A total of 404 patients received non-surgical management, 278 of them (68.7%) being lower level fracture without significant displacement. Surgical treatment outbalanced non-surgical approach in rehabilitation of occlusional relationship and an adverse outcome was noted in term of maximum mouth opening, but the re was no significant difference in postoperative joint pain.CONCLUSIONSSeverely displaced and dislocated condylar fracture is indicated for surgical treatment.
Complications of Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Mandibular Condyle Fractures in Oman

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to report the complication rate associated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of mandibular condyle fractures in Oman. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients who underwent ORIF of mandibular condyle fractures at Al-Nahdha Hospital and the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat, Oman, from January 2008 to December 2020. Data collected included patient demographics, fracture aetiology, fracture side and type, surgical approach and recorded complications and outcomes. Results: A total of 68 patients (59 males and 9 females; mean age of 30.1 years) with 83 mandibular condyle fractures underwent ORIF during the study period. Subcondylar fractures were the most common type, occurring in 62.7% of patients, while bilateral fractures were observed in 21 (30.8%) patients. The most common surgical approach was retromandibular, used in 42.2% of patients. The overall complication rate was 42.6%, with the most frequently reported complications being transient facial nerve palsy (18.1%), malocclusion (14.7%) and restricted mouth opening (10.3%). Subsequent surgical interventions to correct malocclusion were performed in 6 cases. There was no statistically significant association between the overall complication rate and the patients' clinical characteristics. Conclusion: Although ORIF of mandibular condyle fractures generally offers favourable outcomes, it carries a risk of complications.

Abstract:Objective: Odontoid fractures can be managed surgically when indicated. The most common approaches are anterior dens screw (ADS) fixation and posterior C1-C2 arthrodesis (PA). Each approach has theoretical advantages, but the optimal surgical approach remains controversial. The goal in this study was to systematically review the literature and synthesize outcomes including fusion rates, technical failures, reoperation, and 30-day mortality associated with ADS versus PA for odontoid fractures. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines by searching the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed and the I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. Results: In total, 22 studies comprising 963 patients (ADS 527, PA 436) were included. The average age of the patients ranged from 28 to 81.2 years across the included studies. The majority of the odontoid fractures were type II based on the Anderson-D'Alonzo classification. The ADS group was associated with statistically significantly lower odds to achieve bony fusion at last follow-up compared to the PA group (ADS 84.1%; PA 92.3%; OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.23-0.91; I2 42.6%). The ADS group was associated with statistically significantly higher odds of reoperation compared to the PA group (ADS 12.4%; PA 5.2%; OR 2.56; 95% CI 1.50-4.35; I2 0%). The rates of technical failure (ADS 2.3%; PA 1.1%; OR 1.11; 95% CI 0.52-2.37; I2 0%) and all-cause mortality (ADS 6%; PA 4.8%; OR 1.35; 95% CI 0.67-2.74; I2 0%) were similar between the two groups. In the subgroup analysis of patients > 60 years old, the ADS was associated with statistically significantly lower odds of fusion compared to the PA group (ADS 72.4%; PA 89.9%; OR 0.24; 95% CI 0.06-0.91; I2 58.7%). Conclusions: ADS fixation is associated with statistically significantly lower odds of fusion at last follow-up and higher odds of reoperation compared to PA. No differences were identified in the rates of technical failure and all-cause mortality. Patients receiving ADS fixation at > 60 years old had significantly higher and lower odds of reoperation and fusion, respectively, compared to the PA group. PA is preferred to ADS fixation for odontoid fractures, with a stronger effect size for patients > 60 years old.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The retromandibular transparotid approach (RMA) to condylar fractures of the mandible provides excellent access, but can increase the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) and associated postoperative complications after open reduction and rigid internal fixation (ORIF) of subcondylar fractures through the RMA.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with condylar fractures requiring ORIF through the RMA. The inclusion criteria were 1) a medical record of surgical treatment of a subcondylar fracture by RMA; 2) preoperative and postoperative radiographs; 3) mental status permitting an adequate neuromotor examination; 4) absence of a post-injury or pretreatment functional facial nerve deficit; and 5) regular postoperative follow-up longer than 6 months with documentation of complications, functional results, and fixation stability. The predictive variables were age, gender, fracture site, fracture pattern, concomitant fractures, etiology, and plate types. The outcome variable was FNP. Univariate, bivariate, and multiple logistic regression statistics were computed.RESULTS: Fifty patients with 55 displaced mandibular subcondylar fractures (35 men, 15 women; mean age, 44.5 yr; range, 17 to 87 yr) met the inclusion criteria. The condylar fracture involved the neck in 35 patients (63.6%) and the base in 20 patients (36.4%). The fracture pattern was deviation in 11 patients (20.0%), displacement in 23 (41.8%), and dislocation in 21 (38.2%). Precise ORIF with double-buttress fixation resulted in immediate functional recovery in all patients. Seven fractures (12.7%) were associated with FNP that resolved completely within 6 months. Further statistical analysis showed that dislocated and displaced condylar neck fractures were significant risk factors for postoperative FNP (P < .05). Other postoperative complications were minimal.CONCLUSION: The RMA for subcondylar fractures is feasible and safe. Dislocated condylar neck fractures are associated with a highly increased risk of temporary postoperative FNP as a surgical complication.

Long-term results of ORIF of condylar head fractures of the mandible: A prospective 5-year follow-up study of small-fragment positional-screw osteosynthesis (SFPSO)

Abstract:Background: Optimum treatment of condylar head fractures (CHF) remains subject to controversy. There are currently a variety of alternative techniques applied, data in literature are often inconsistent and especially systematic long-term data on results after treatment by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) have so far not been available. This study in hand is the first long-term prospective study of ORIF after CHF based on osteosynthesis with 1.7 mm small-fragment positional screws (SFPSO)via a retroauricular transmeatal approach (RA). Methods: The study made use of radiologic, anatomic and objective functional parameters (axiography and MRI) to assess vertical height, disk mobility, protrusive and translatory movement as well as potential physical complaints. Included were surgical long-term sequelae after RA, such as incidence of stenosis of the auditory canal, the facial nerve and resulting disturbance of facial skin sensitivity. Retroauricular scars were evaluated according to the Vancouver Scar Scale. Helkimo and RDC/TMD indices were applied for patient's self-assessment of quality of life aspects after ORIF via RA. The sample in the first follow-up trial (FFT) in the years 2003-2004 comprised 26 patients (36 CHF). 22 patients (31 CHF) were re-evaluated in a second follow-up trial (SFT) between 2006 and 2008. A reference collective (43 patients, 56 CHF) treated with ORIF from 1993 to 2000 mainly by mini- or microplates (MMP) served as a surgical control group. Results: Five years after ORIF all fractured condyles (FC) continued to show stable anatomic restoration of the pre-trauma vertical height. FC treated with SFPSO exhibited a significantly superior range of motion (p < 0.05) of disk and condyle during mouth opening and protrusion compared to a previous MMP reference collective. Also, no difference was found between condylar mobility of FC five years after surgery and non-fractured condyles (NFC). SFPSO had thus successfully achieved a sustainable, stable physiological restoration of protrusive mobility of the articular disk and condyle. Remarkably, these long-term results were even slightly better in SFT vs. FFT (p < 0.05). Except for sporadically occurring minor complaints, the patients' subjective overall long-term perception of the success of the treatment was equally positive to the surgeons' objective assessment. Conclusions: This first long-term prospective follow-up study, based on objective assessment tools, demonstrates that in all cases the major goals of ORIF in CHF could be fully achieved. These goals are: restoration of vertical height viz. prevention of occlusal disorders, physiological function of disk and condyle as well as of the lateral pterygoid muscle. Accordingly, ORIF of CHF e.g. with SFPSO and via the RA secures both a long-term functionally and anatomically stable result and as best as possible pain-free result for the patient, a central prerequisite of optimum perceived HRQoL. The paper has been amended by an extensive review part that covers the current knowledge of the major surgical aspects regarding the treatment of condylar head fractures.
Arthroscopically Assisted Versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation for Ankle Fractures: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:BackgroundOpen reduction and internal fixation were routinely used to treat patients with unstable ankle fractures (ORIF). However, some patients may experience persistent ankle pain and disability following ORIF due to untreated intra-articular lesions. Moreover, ankle fractures may be treated with arthroscopically assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF). This study aimed to compare the feasibility and benefits of ARIF versus ORIF for ankle fractures.MethodsWe performed this meta-analysis in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A systematic search was conducted for comparative studies comparing ARIF and ORIF for ankle fractures. Nine studies were included in the analysis of clinical and secondary outcomes. In summary, we calculated the mean difference (MD), risk ratio (RR), confidence interval, and p value.ResultsThis meta-analysis demonstrated that the ARIF group achieved a higher Olerud-Molander Ankle (OMA) score (MD: 6.6; 95% CI 0.20 to 13.0; p = 0.04) and lower visual analog scale (VAS) score (MD: - 0.36; 95% CI - 0.64 to - 0.10; p = 0.01) at the final follow-up. Nevertheless, the smallest treatment effect of OMA score and VAS score did not exceed the minimum clinically important difference (MCID). There were longer surgery time (MD: 15.0; 95% CI 10.7 to 19.3; p < 0.01) and lower complication rates (RR: 0.53; 95% CI 0.31 to 0.89; p = 0.02) in ARIF compared with ORIF. The random-effect model suggested no significant difference in the arthritis change rate between the two groups.ConclusionIn summary, the results of this meta-analysis indicated that ARIF and ORIF are comparable in terms of providing pain relief and improving function for patients with ankle fractures. Therefore, the choice between the two techniques should be based on the patient's individual factors and the surgeon's personal preference.

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study is to assess patients' subjective perception of treatment outcome after extracapsular fractures of the mandibular condyle. Methods: A questionnaire survey regarding facial nerve palsy (FNP), malocclusion, pain, reduction in maximum mouth opening (MMO) and further discomfort after 3, 6, and 12 months was carried out. Patients aged 18 or more presenting with an extracapsular condylar fracture between 2006 and 2020 were identified by purposive sampling Questionnaires were received from 115 patients. Fractures were classified on the basis of the pre-treatment imaging, the way of treatment was obtained from patients' medical records. Data were analyzed using Pearsons' chi-square-test, descriptive statistics and Student ́s t-test. Results: 93.0% of the fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). MMO reduction was the most common post-treatment complication (55.6%). ORIF was associated with less pain after 3 months (p = 0.048) and lower VAS scores compared to conservative treatment (p = 0.039). Comminuted fractures were more frequently associated with post-treatment malocclusion (p = 0.048), FNP (p = 0.016) and MMO reduction (p = 0.001). Bilateral fractures were significantly accompanied by malocclusion (p = 0.029), MMO reduction (p = 0.038) and pain occurrence (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients report less pain after ORIF. Comminuted and bilateral fractures seem to be major risk factors for complications. Subjective perception of complications after extracapsular condylar fractures differs from objectively assessed data.

Abstract:Objectives: This systematic review searched three of the most used databases to assess if current evidence suggested a difference between surgical and non-surgical management of mandibular condyle fractures in paediatric patients.Material and Methods: An electronic literature search was conducted of three well known databases - Ovid, PubMed and Web of Science. Studies included were conducted paediatric patients, in humans, written in English and published from January 1<sup>st</sup> 1996 until April 1<sup>st</sup> 2022. Data collection was carried out by two independent reviewers. Data collated from studies without high risk of bias was pooled for surgical vs non-surgical management and total tallies of all outcomes presented. Presence or absence of complications was recorded in 4 x 4 tables for each outcome and compared using a Chi-Square test.Results: After duplicate records were removed, 182 records were screened. After exclusion of unsuitable reports, 20 were included in the review. Further analysis showed the included studies had high risk of bias. Given this, comparison of this pooled data showed no significant difference between management methods.Conclusions: Presently it appears conservative management is functionally adequate without risks associated with surgical management, even though incidence of these risks was shown to be low in the studies included in this review.
Primary Arthrodesis or Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Lisfranc Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:Background: Lisfranc injuries are often managed surgically with primary arthrodesis (PA) or open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF); however, neither approach has been shown to be superior. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare the functional and surgical outcomes of PA and ORIF in the treatment of Lisfranc injuries. Methods: This study was performed as per the PRISMA protocol. Database searches were conducted on Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed libraries. Five RCTs were identified for inclusion involving 241 patients, of which 121 underwent PA and 120 underwent ORIF. Results: Statistically significant differences in visual analog scale pain score at 2 years (mean difference 0.89, 95% CI 0.18-1.59), patient satisfaction (OR 10.04, 95% CI 1.78-56.76), and all-cause return to surgery (OR 27.31, 95% CI 12.72-58.63) were observed, all favoring PA. There were no statistically significant differences between PA and ORIF with regard to American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society midfoot scores at 2 years, 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scores, and unplanned return to surgery. Conclusion: This study showed significant improvement in pain at 2 years, patient satisfaction, and all-cause return to surgery favoring PA in all instances. Given ORIF often necessitates a second operation for hardware removal, it is to be expected that all-cause return to surgery is higher in ORIF groups. Overall, these results do not have the power to confer an advantage to a particular approach because of significant heterogeneity. Further studies should focus on larger patient cohorts and longer follow-up, or analysis stratified by patient demographics and injury presentation. In the absence of clinically significant differences, cost-benefit analyses should be considered to answer the question of whether to "fix or fuse" for Lisfranc injuries.
Comparison of temporomandibular joint function and morphology after surgical and non-surgical treatment in adult condylar head fractures

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Purpose</h3><p>The aim of this study was to evaluate whether surgical treatment can distinctly improve temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function and morphology in adult patients with condylar head fractures (CHFs) when compared with conservative treatment.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Patients and methods</h3><p>A retrospective study was performed to evaluate surgical and conservative outcomes in all patients who had suffered CHFs. In this study, all patients were divided into a surgical group and a conservative group. In the surgical group patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) combined disc anchorage, while in the conservative group patients were treated by a removable splint combined with intermaxillary elastics. Clinical and radiological outcomes were evaluated and functional outcomes were assessed using the Helkimo index score. Paired t-tests, Wilcoxon signed rank tests, independent t-tests and χ<sup>2</sup> tests were used to assess inter-group differences.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>75 TMJs in 56 patients were included in this study and were divided into a surgical group (56 TMJs in 40 patients) and a conservative group (19 TMJs in 16 patients). The results showed that the Helkimo index score for TMJ in the surgical group was better than in the conservative group (<em>p</em><sub>Ai</sub> = 0.032, <em>p</em><sub>Di</sub> = 0.001, respectively). Ramus height in the surgical group (61.08 ± 4.04 mm) recovered more than in the conservative group (54.82 ± 3.06mm) (<em>p</em> = 0.012). Discs became shorter, moved further forward, and became severely distorted in the conservative group (disc length = 7.32 ± 1.35 mm). In contrast, discs became longer, retained a normal disc–condyle relationship, and formed a normal shape in the surgical group (disc length = 11.05 ± 2.07 mm) (<em>p</em> = 0.003). According to the MRI images, joint effusion, retrodiscal tear, and lateral capsular tear were better cured in the surgical group (<em>p</em> = 0.001, <em>p</em><0.001, <em>p</em> = 0.012, respectively).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>Based on these results, it seems that surgical treatment of condylar head fractures should be the preferred approach if there are no contraindications for general anesthesia.</p>

Abstract:Multi-flash campimetry is a computer-implemented psychophysical technique that allows temporal resolution to be assessed in 120 points per eye in a half hour. It has previously been reported that the results can serve to distinguish between multiple sclerosis patients and control subjects. We have now used this technique to measure temporal resolution in patients with amblyopia, cataracts, optic neuritis or macular degeneration. Our results indicate that multi-flash campimetry is at least as sensitive to visual loss in patients with amblyopia or cataracts as visual acuity testing with the Snellen chart and kinetic visual field testing with the Goldmann perimeter. Further, multi-flash campimetry may be more sensitive than the other two techniques to subtle residual loss in patients who have had optic neuritis and to early loss in patients with macular degeneration.
