Abstract:Electronic structures, geometries, and vertical excitation energies of chloroboron subphthalocyanine, tribenzodiazasubporphyrin, tribenzomonoazasubporphyrin, and tribenzosubporphyrin were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT coupled with polarized continuum model (PCM) approach. Molecular geometries calculated at the BP86/6-311G(d) level reveal bowl-shape, trigonal prismatic conformations for all compounds with a variable bowl-depth that depends on the number of meso-nitrogen atoms in corresponding molecule. TDDFT-PCM calculations predict that the Q-band should undergo gradual high-energy shift, while the B-band should undergo low-energy shift upon stepwise substitution of the meso-nitrogen atoms in subphthalocyanine toward tribenzosubporphyrin. The TDDFT-PCM predicted trend was rationalized on the basis of electronic structures of target macrocycles. When comparison between theory and experiment is available, TDDFT-PCM calculations are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental data.
Novel Meso-Polyarylamine-bodipy Hybrids: Synthesis and Study of Their Optical Properties

Abstract:A series of 14 meso-polyarylamine-BODIPY (borondipyrromethene) hybrids of the general structure A were synthesized. Two methods were used to prepare them. The first protocol involved a direct Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling of thiomethylbodipys 1-2 with arylaminoboronic acids (4 examples, 75-98%). The second method involves a two-step sequence: a Liebeskind-Srogl reaction to prepare 6 meso-bromoarylbodipys (58-83%) followed by a Suzuki coupling of these Br-containing BODIPYs with arylaminoboronic acids (10 examples, 44-84%). Seven of these derivatives displayed emission in the near-infrared region. The optical properties of compound 18 were rationalized in terms of its crystal structure.

Abstract:The direct photolysis of 18 individual polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) substituted with 1–7 bromine atoms was investigated in hexane and methanol under UV irradiation. Based on the determined photolysis rate constants (kp) and calculated quantum yields (Φ), four quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) models were developed by partial least squares (PLS) method and 20 fundamental molecular structural descriptors. The fitting results showed that all of four QSPR models had good predictability and correlations between observed and predicted photolysis data were significant. The predominant molecular descriptors governing photolysis rate constants of PBDEs in hexane were Mw,Sm,qBr,andqBr+, while in methanol the significant variables were α, TE, Mw and Sm. In terms of the QSPR models for quantum yields of PBDEs in hexane and methanol, the governing molecular descriptors were almost the same. Molecular weight (Mw) and three atomic charge descriptors (qBr+,qH+,qBr) were all presented in the four QSPR models, implying that photolysis rate constants and quantum yields were affected by the bromination degree and substitution pattern of PBDE molecules.

Abstract:Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives 1 and 2 consisting of donor and acceptor units with dual photoresponses to solvent polarity and luminogen aggregation are developed through taking advantage of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (ATE) processes. In nonpolar solvents, the locally excited (LE) states of the BODIPY luminogens emit intense green lights. Increasing solvent polarity brings the luminogens from the LE state to the TICT state, causing a large bathochromic shift in the emission color but a dramatic decrease in the emission efficiency. The red emission is greatly boosted by aggregate formation or ATE effect: addition of large amounts of water into the solutions of 1 and 2 in the polar solvents causes the luminogens to aggregate supramolecularly and to emit efficiently. The emission can be enhanced by increasing solvent viscosity and decreasing solution temperature, indicating that the ATE effect is caused by the restriction of the intramolecular rotations in the aggregates of the luminogens.

Abstract:A comprehensive evaluation of 2,6,8-triphenyl-BODIPY-3,5-dicarboxylates was carried out to reveal the effect of substitution at 1,7-positions on properties of this structural type of BODIPY. For this purpose, a series of different 1,7-substituted ethyl 2,6,8-triphenyl-BODIPY-3,5-dicarboxylates (unsubstituted 3a, difluoro- 3b, dimethyl- 3c and dichloro- 3d ) was synthesized. The resulting BODIPYs were characterized by UV–visible and fluorescence spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations. In addition, their ability to generate singlet oxygen and photostability were evaluated. The data from this investigation are summarized, compared, analyzed and discussed herein. It was found that 1,7- dimethyl derivative 3c is the most promising photosensitizer for further application in the context of balance between photophysical properties and photostability

Abstract:Five β-β linked BODIPY dimers (d1-d5) with different electron-donating/withdrawing groups at the meso-position were synthesized through improved synthetic methods. All compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and HRMS. The single crystal X-ray analyses indicate that d4 and d5 display a linear coplanar conformation with two linked BODIPY moiety. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties have been investigated by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, two-photon excited spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The β-β linked BODIPY dimers exhibit a prominent red shift from the visible region to the red/near-infrared region of their absorption and emission spectra, large Stokes shifts and moderate two-photon absorption cross section σ2 with different groups at the meso-position.

Abstract:4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-based molecules have emerged as interesting materials for optoelectronic applications due to the possibility to easily fine-tune their photophysical and optical properties, dominated by two main absorption bands in the visible range. However, no studies have been reported on the nature of these spectral features. By means of ultrafast spectroscopy, we detect intramolecular energy transfer in a spin-coated film of di-thieno-phenyl BODIPY (DTPBDP) dispersed in a polystyrene matrix after pumping the high-energy absorption band. The same effect is not present upon pumping the lowest-energy band, which instead allows the achievement of efficient amplified spontaneous emission. Density functional calculations indicate the different nature of the two main absorption bands, explaining their different photophysical behavior.

Abstract:Two π‐extended derivatives of boron‐dipyrromethene (BODIPY) – unsymmetrical benzo[b]‐fused BODIPY 1 and symmetrical naptho[b]‐fused BODIPY 2 – were synthesized. Spectroscopic and photophysical properties of the synthesized fluorescent dyes were investigated in various organic media. Both BODIPY 1 and BODIPY 2 distinguished by bathochromically shifted absorption and emission bands compared to their non‐fused derivatives, while possessing green (526 – 543 nm) and red (664 – 708 nm) absorbance and fluorescence, respectively. Spectral characteristics of the investigated fluorescent dyes were found to be weakly depended on solvent polarizability in case of BODIPY 1 and greatly influenced by both solvent polarizability and dipolarity in case of BODIPY 2. Quantum chemical calculations were used to clarify the relationships between geometry/electronic structure and spectral properties/solvatochromic behavior of BODIPY 1 and BODIPY 2.

Abstract:Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes have been extensively investigated in recent years for a variety of bioanalytical and bioimaging applications. The success of these applications relies on the stability of BODIPYs, particularly under acidic conditions. In this work, the stability of a series of 4,4'-disubstituted BODIPYs (-F, -CN, -Ph, -Me, -OMe) toward addition of excess trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) was studied systematically and comprehensively through 11B and 1H NMR, UV-vis, fluorescence, thin layer chromatography, mass spectrometry, and infrared. The results indicate that 4,4'-dicyano-BODIPY 2 is the most stable among this series and remains unchanged even 3 days after addition of excess TFA. On the other hand, 4,4'-dimethyl-BODIPY 3 and 4,4'-dimethoxy-BODIPY 5 are the least stable, toward addition of TFA, and the 4,4'-diphenyl and 4,4'-difluoro-BODIPYs 1 and 4 were found to have intermediate stability. The experimental analysis and comparison with theoretical calculations indicate that the 4,4'-dicyano-BODIPY 2 has the greater aromaticity of the series, as evaluated by the BLA parameter, decreased charge on boron, and upon TFA addition it forms an unusually stable BODIPY 2···TFA complex. On the other hand, all other BODIPYs decompose within hours after TFA addition. Computational modeling demonstrates that 4,4'-dicyano substitution increases aromaticity and stabilizes the B-N bond, resulting in the most stable compound from the series studied.

Abstract:Novel BODIPY derivatives possessing different styryl substituents were synthesized using different methods of Knoevenagel-type condensation with conventional heating and microwave radiation in two conditions. Microwave-assisted synthesis significantly reduces reaction time while enhancing its efficiency. The introduction of styryl substituents at the 3 and 5 positions of the BODIPY core resulted in a substantial bathochromic shift, which was affected by the substituents within styryl groups. Depending on the solvents, the BODIPY with unsubstituted styryl groups possesses absorption maxima (λ Abs ) between 616 and 626 nm. While the analogs containing electron-donating methoxy and methylthio groups exhibited bathochromically shifted bands with λ Abs values in the 633-654 nm range. Fluorescence studies revealed intensive emission of tested BODIPYs with fluorescence quantum yields at the 0.41-0.83 range. On the other hand, singlet oxygen quantum yields were very low. In the electrochemical studies, the CV and DPV scans showed the presence of three redox processes. The calculated electrochemical gaps were in the range of 1.71-1.87.

Abstract:The photochemical, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of BODIPY compounds (1-7) substituted with iodine or pyrene at the 2, 6, or 8-positions (meso) were thoroughly investigated in this study. Through the incorporation of iodine and/or pyrene moieties into the BODIPY derivatives, we evaluated their impact on the photophysical properties using both steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence analysis. Notably, the heavy atom effect induced by iodine was observed, leading to an increase in singlet oxygen quantum yield in proportion to fluorescence intensity. Furthermore, the introduction of pyrene at the meso position in BODIPY (compound 5) significantly enhanced the π-conjugated system and facilitated the generation of singlet oxygen. Intriguingly, compound 7, which featured pyrene substitutions at positions 2, 6, and 8, exhibited a reduced singlet oxygen yield when compared to the iodine-substituted compound 6. Moreover, we conducted an evaluation of the electrochemical properties of the BODIPY compounds (1-7) in dichloromethane. Additionally, we characterized the structures of the synthesized compounds (5♦, 6, and 7), using various spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, HRMS, and NMR (1H, 13C, 19F, and 11B), which were performed for the first time within the scope of this study. The comprehensive findings obtained from this extensive research contribute valuable knowledge that has the potential to guide the development of highly efficacious photosensitizers for applications in photodynamic therapy.

Abstract:Two different covalently linked phenyl-bridged 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY-BODIPY dyads were synthesized over a series of synthetic steps and thoroughly characterized and studied by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT/TD-DFT techniques. The X-ray structure obtained for one of the dyads showed that both the BODIPY and 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY units were oriented almost perpendicular to each other and the bridging p-phenyl ring was oriented at 60.34° to that of BF2-dipyrrin core of BODIPY unit resulting in the tilted structure of dyad. Both dyads show two well separated absorption bands corresponding to BODIPY and 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY units respectively. In these dyads, BODIPY unit absorbs at higher energy and acts as an energy donor whereas the 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY unit absorbs at lower energy and acts as an energy acceptor. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies indicated the possibility of intramolecular singlet-singlet energy transfer from the BODIPY to the 3-pyrroly BODIPY units with good efficiency upon selective excitation of BODIPY unit in both 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY-BODIPY dyads. DFT and TD-DFT studies were in consistent with the experimental observations.

Abstract:Herein, a series of new BODIPY dyes substituted by 2-phenyl benzimidazole units at the meso (C8) position including methyl/ethyl, phenyl, or p- methoxyphenyl moieties at the distal and proximal positions of the BODIPY core have been successfully synthesized and their photophysical characteristics were analyzed. Experimentally investigating absorption and fluorescence profiles in the THF media was followed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations to clarify photophysical features. Theoretical analyses have revealed that upon excitation, both electrons and holes are confined solely within the BODIPY core. The energy levels of the frontier molecular orbitals converge depending on the presence of the phenyl and p- methoxyphenyl substituents. The orbital distributions of both electron and hole were in the -3 and -5 positions, which demonstrates a continuous conjugation with the BODIPY core at these sites. However, the electron density present on the phenyl rings located at the -1, -7, and -8 ( meso ) positions was found to be negligible. The benzimidazole-BODIPYs exhibited photodynamic activity (Φ ∆ ) ranging from ~ 7% to ~ 11%, determined by a comparative method. Moreover, the compounds have shown to maintain their stability thermally in a non-reactive/inert environment up to temperatures surpassing 300 °C, exhibiting primarily a two-phase decomposition process. These compounds have the potential to function as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents when used in concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg/mL. The results provide a basis for evaluating heterocyclic benzimidazole units on photophysical processes containing BODIPY chromophores.

Abstract:Substituted boron-dipyrromethene compounds (BODIPYs) have gained significant attention due to their tunable photophysical properties, including two-photon absorption (2PA), a nonlinear optical process where two photons are absorbed simultaneously. The tuning of BODIPY's photophysical properties has recently led to the synthesis of pnictogen-containing derivatives, such as SBDIPY and BIDIPY, where boron is replaced by antimony (Sb) or bismuth (Bi), respectively, as well as other analogues like GADIPY, which contain gallium (Ga). This study presents a computational investigation into their 2PA properties, exploring the impact of various substitutions across these systems. The 2PA cross-sections (σ2PA), electronic excitation energies (ΔE), and dipole moments (µ00, µ11, µ01, Δµ) were computed for 18 DIPY chromophores in the gas-phase with time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) using several functionals (CAM-B3LYP, ωB97X, M06-2X, M11, and MN15), and then compared to RI-CC2 results. The computed mean absolute errors were small, with the MN15, CAM-B3LYP, and M06-2X functionals being among the best-performing for the properties analyzed. In general, for the parent (unsubstituted) compounds, replacing the core atom in DIPY chromophores results in negligible changes to their σ2PA. However, extending the conjugation through the addition of phenyl substituents significantly increases σ2PA values, and the nature of the core atom impacts the magnitude of this enhancement.

Abstract:The singlet and triplet excited states of three iodine substituted BODIPY dyes differing by their substituent (-phenyl, -phenylOH and -phenylNO2) at the meso position of the BODIPY core (BOD) are investigated by (TDA)-TDDFT and DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD calculations. An assessment of hybrid (B3LYP and MN15) and double-hybrid (SOS-PBE-QIDH and SOS-ωPBEPP86) exchange-correlation functionals is performed with respect to the DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD method for four types of transitions, namely πBOD → πBOD*, πPhenyl → πBOD*, πBOD → πPhenyl* and πBOD → σIodine*. It is found that MN15 and SOS-PBE-QIDH provide a balanced description of the excited states energies when compared to the DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD results. An investigation of the effects of solvent (dichloromethane), of the substituent and of geometrical relaxation in the excited states is then performed. In particular, the study discusses the possibility of populating charge transfer states (πPhenyl → πBOD* and πBOD → πPhenyl*) following photoexcitation in the first and second absorption bands in these systems.

Abstract:Abstract Donor–acceptor dyads based on BODIPYs have been recently employed to enhance the formation of triplet excited states with the process of spin–orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) which does not require introduction of transition metals or other heavy atoms into the molecule. In this work we compare two donor–acceptor dyads based on meso -naphthalenyl BODIPY by combining experimental and computational investigations. The photophysical and electrochemical characterization reveals a significant effect of alkylation of the BODIPY core, disfavoring the SOCT-ISC mechanism for the ethylated BODIPY dyad. This is complemented with a computational investigation carried out to rationalize the influence of ethyl substituents and solvent effects on the electronic structure and efficiency of triplet state population via charge recombination (CR) from the photoinduced electron transfer (PeT) generated charge-transfer (CT) state. Time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations including solvent effects and spin–orbit coupling (SOC) calculations uncover the combined role played by solvent and alkyl substitution on the lateral positions of BODIPY. Abstract:This study investigates the structural and electronic properties of BODIPY (BDP) derivatives featuring meso‐substituted donors arranged orthogonally, leveraging Time‐Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD‐DFT). These deriva‐ tives, selected based on experimental evidence of their quantum yield towards singlet oxygen generation, exhibit intricate excited‐state dynamics, transitioning from fluorescence to intersystem crossing (ISC), thereby presenting a promising avenue for applications in photodynamic therapy. Emphasizing heavy‐atom‐free organic triplet photosensitizers, with BDP dyes highlighted for their exceptional adaptability in photophysical characteristics, our analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the fundamental design principles governing such photosen‐ sitizers. Through a combined approach of static and dynamic calculations, we elucidate the mechanisms underlying the population transfer from singlet to triplet states, thereby providing valuable insights for the development of efficient photodynamic therapy agents.

Bis(2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium) tetrathiocyanatocobaltate(II)

Abstract:The title compound, (C19H15N4)2[Co(NCS)4], has two crystallographycally different molecules of bis(2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium) tetrathiocyanatecobaltate in the asymmetric unit. There are only minor geometric differences between them. Each cobalt(II) ion is coordinated by the N atoms of four NCS anions, showing the magnitude of the magnetic moment expected from the NCS− crystal field strength.

Abstract:Seven new pyrrolo[3,4- b ]pyridin-5-ones linked to a meso -thienyl BODIPY moiety by an ethynylbenzene π-conjugated system were synthesized in one-pot manner via an Ugi-Zhu reaction coupled to a cascade process [ aza Diels-Alder cycloaddition/ N -acylation/decarboxylation/dehydration]. The photophysical properties of the polyheterocyclic compounds were evaluated by UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy in five solvents of different polarities. All synthesized products showed two distinct absorption/emission bands, corresponding to both fluorophores separately. The fluorescence intensity of the pyrrolo[3,4- b ]pyridin-5-one was the highest in toluene, and it decreased with increasing solvent polarity. On the other hand, the fluorescence intensity of the meso -thienyl BODIPY fragment was insensitive to solvent polarity. The effect of different substituents bonded to the pyrrole ring was evaluated, finding that strong electron-donating groups influence the fluorescence intensity and decay rate of the compounds, even with the presence of a methylene spacer. Moreover, the electronic structure was assessed by DFT and TD-DFT calculations, which reproduced the experimental results reasonably well, showing that the HOMO is located on the pyrrolo[3,4- b ]pyridin-5-one core, while the LUMO is on the BODIPY fragment.

Abstract:BODIPY chromophores (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) are one of the most versatile fluorophores which are commonly used in a variety of scientific fields. The combination of excellent photophysical properties with the possibility of easy chemical modification of structure, chemical and photostability determines the application of BODIPY in biomedicine, photocatalysis, analytical chemistry and materials science. This review summarizes approaches to the synthesis and modification of BODIPY, discussing both classical and recently-published synthetic and postfunctionalization approaches. An influence of BODIPY structure and various postfunctionalization methods on photophysical properties of the fluorophores and their potential applications in biomedicine, materials science and biosensorics are also discussed. The bibliography includes 344 references.
