Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are solar energy conversion devices with high efficiency and simple fabrication procedures. Developing transparent counter electrode (CE) materials for bifacial DSSCs can address the needs of window-type building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). Herein, transparent organic-inorganic hybrid composite films of molybdenum disulfide and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (MoS2/PEDOT) are prepared to take full advantage of the conductivity and electrocatalytic ability of the two components. MoS2 is synthesized by hydrothermal method and spin-coated to form the MoS2 layer, and then PEDOT films are electrochemically polymerized on top of the MoS2 film to form the composite CEs. The DSSC with the optimized MoS2/PEDOT composite CE shows power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7% under front illumination and 4.82% under back illumination. Compared with the DSSC made by the PEDOT CE and the Pt CE, the DSSC fabricated by the MoS2/PEDOT composite CE improves the PCE by 10.6% and 6.4% for front illumination, respectively. It proves that the transparent MoS2/PEDOT CE owes superior conductivity and catalytic properties, and it is an excellent candidate for bifacial DSSC in the application of BIPVs.
Design of Amorphous ZnWSe2 Alloy-based Counter Electrode for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:One of the biggest obstacles in the commercialization of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is the presence of very expensive and rare platinum (Pt) catalytic material as a reference counter electrode (CE). Since finding new CE materials for replacing the state-of-the-art Pt is still challenging, the discovery of low-cost CE materials with superior catalytic activity is of paramount importance. Here, innovative and effective ZnWSe2 alloy CE materials in the amorphous structure are designed with different Zn ratios by magnetron sputtering route and employed in DSSC applications to overcome the above-mentioned challenges of Pt CE. The formation of amorphous phase with Zn content is further verified by theoretical calculations. The various electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Tafel demonstrate that the optimum ZnWSe2 (donated as ZnWSe2-3) alloy-based CE material possesses superior electro-catalytic activity, electrochemical stability, and fast reaction kinetics for an iodide/triiodide (I‒/I3‒) redox pair. Thanks to low charge transfer resistance, high electrical conductivity, and large surface area, the cell employing ZnWSe2-3 CE reaches a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.27% with enhanced short circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) parameters, which is higher than that of DSSCs based on Pt (7.56%), WSe2 (6.35%), other ZnWSe2-based CEs (6.20 to 7.41%). In addition to improved photovoltaic (PV) performance, cell employing ZnWSe2-3 CE exhibits prolonged photostability under operational conditions. This facile and efficient approach provides a promising direction to fabricate high-efficiency and electrochemically stable DSSCs. We thus believe that our work could provide an effective alternative for the design of high-performance and low-cost CE materials in PV applications.

Abstract:In this work, MoS2 microspheres/PtCo-alloy nanoparticles (MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs) were composited via a novel and facile process which MoS2 is functionalized by poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) and self-assembled with PtCo-alloy NPs. This new composite shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and great potential for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as a counter electrode (CE) material. Benefiting from heterostructure and synergistic effects, the MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs exhibit high electrocatalytic activity, low charge-transfer resistance and stability in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test. Meanwhile, a high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.46% is achieved in DSSCs with MoS2/PtCo-alloy NP CEs, which are comparable to traditional Pt CEs (8.45%). This novel composite provides a new high-performance, stable and cheap choice for CEs in DSSCs.

Abstract:A porous coating structure transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4@NiMoO4 composite was successfully synthesized on the surface of carbon paper (CP) by a simple two-step hydrothermal method as a Pt-free material for titanium mesh substrate counter electrodes (CEs) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). According to BET test results, the material has a high specific surface area, which can provide abundant active sites for the redox reaction of electrolytes to enhance the utilization rate of sunlight by DSSCs, and the composite materials show remarkable electrocatalytic performance in reducing iodine electrolytes and improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs. Therefore, the DSSCs equipped with ZnCo2O4@NiMoO4/CP material CEs achieve a PCE of 9.30 % (with Jsc of 20.51 mA·cm−2, Voc of 0.763 V, and FF is 0.60), which is much higher than that of Pt CEs (7.36 %) under the same light conditions. This is due to the excellent catalytic ability and good electrical conductivity of the composite material. On the other hand, because the titanium mesh can increase the contact area between the electrode material and the substrate compared with the FTO substrate, and the titanium mesh has good electrical conductivity, it can enhance the diffusion ability of I - / I 3 - to accelerate electron transmission.

Electron Migration Optimization Through Nanostructural Control of Hierarchical Fe3O4 Based Counter Electrodes for High-Performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Reasonably designing of counter electrode (CE) and iodine ion electrolyte is crucial for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Fe3O4 possesses high conductivity and catalytic activity to facilitate the electrolyte reduction reaction at the surface of CE. However, the morphology control and active site modulation of Fe3O4 based CE are still to be explored. Herein, we propose a facile bottom-top strategy to prepare hierarchical Fe3O4 nanostructures with different tunable morphologies, including Fe3O4 nanorings (NR), nanosheets (NS) and nanoflowers (NF). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Tafel polarization, cyclic voltammetry and photocurrent density-voltage measurements of these samples were carried out, revealing their high performances as CE in DSSCs. Among them, the Fe3O4 NF with mesoporous nanosphere flower structure and high specific surface area is synthesized, which realized the highest PCE (8.56%), which is also higher than the value of Pt based CE (7.57%). Compared to other competing materials, Fe3O4 nanostructure based CE shows the outstanding merits of high photovoltaic performance, easy preparation, low cost and eco-friendliness, offering the possibility to replace conventional Pt based CE in DSSCs.

Abstract:The star-shape of 3,6-bis(5-(4,4′-bis(3-azidopropyl)-[1,1′:3′,1′-terphenyl]-5′-yl)-thien-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPPTPTA) is combined with electrospun bimetallic copper-cobalt phosphide decorated on carbon nanofibers (CuCoP/CNF) and used as a modified layer ( DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF ) on the platinum (Pt) coated counter electrode (CE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). DPPTPTA possesses ladder-like energy levels for efficient charge separation while CuCoP/CNF has a high electrocatalytic activity and sufficient electrical conductivity. Overall, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF heterostructure exhibits attractive performance needed for the CE of DSSCs. From electrochemical analysis, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF modified layer ensures efficient charge transfer at the CE/electrolyte interface with low charge transfer resistance. Moreover, the CE/electrolyte interface possesses a small electron recombination rate, since the modified layer has good charge separation ability. Under 1 sun (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm -2 ) conditions, the pertinent DSSC achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency ( η ) of 9.50%, open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 827 mV, short-circuit current density ( J SC ) of 16.25 mA cm -2 , and fill factor ( FF ) of 0.71. Under indoor conditions, the η value at 6,000 lux (1.89 mW cm -2 ) reached 25.44%. Finally, the porous three-dimensional nanofiber structure of the modified layer can ensure long-term at-rest stability (90% retention after 3,000 h). Thus, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF modified layer-based DSSC can be considered as a promising device for possible renewable energy.

Abstract:SnS, composed of earth abundant and environmentally benign elements, is a unique material for wide applications in thermoelectricity, solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, and electrochemical energy storage. The controllable synthesis of SnS nanocrystals with exposed different facets is meaningful. In general, an alkylphosphine ligand was used in the preparation of SnS nanocrystals to control its chemical formulas and morphologies. Here, the two-dimensional square-shaped SnS nanosheets (SnS-S) and pentahedron-shaped SnS nanocrystals (SnS-P) were controllably synthesized with alkylamine ligands. The preferential binding of oleylamine and hexadecylamine to the (100) and (130) facets of SnS, respectively, restricted the further growth of the (100) and (130) facets. Then SnS-S with (100) and SnS-P with (130) facets were prepared. The nanomaterial with special facets usually exhibited unique physical and chemical properties compared with the conventional material. When they were exploited as counter electrode (CE) catalysts for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), the device based on the SnS-S electrode achieved a satisfactory photoelectric conversion efficiency of 8.96%, superior to that of the SnS-P (8.23%) and conventional Pt (7.72%). The excellent DSSCs performance of SnS-S was mainly attributed to the exposed (100) facets improving the catalytic activity for the I-3(-) reduction and the unique layer structure accelerating the electron transfer. It provided a novel insight into preparing a high-performance SnS-based CE catalyst.

Abstract:Solar energy is the most abundant renewable energy available to the earth and can meet the energy needs of humankind, but efficient conversion of solar energy to electricity is an urgent issue of scientific research. As the third-generation photovoltaic technology, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have gained great attention since the landmark efficiency of ∼7% reported by O'Regan and Grätzel. The most attractive features of DSSCs include low cost, simple manufacturing processes, medium-purity materials, and theoretically high power conversion efficiencies. As one of the key materials in DSSCs, the counter electrode (CE) plays a crucial role in completing the electric circuit by catalyzing the reduction of the oxidized state to the reduced state for a redox couple (e.g., I3-/I-) in the electrolyte at the CE-electrolyte interface. To lower the cost caused by the typically used Pt CE, which restricts the large-scale application because of its low reserves and high price, great effort has been made to develop new CE materials alternative to Pt. A lot of Pt-free electrocatalysts, such as carbon materials, inorganic compounds, conductive polymers, and their composites with good electrocatalytic activity, have been applied as CEs in DSSCs in the past years. Metal selenides have been widely used as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction and light-harvesting materials for solar cells. Our group first expanded their applications to the DSSC field by using in situ-grown Co0.85Se nanosheet and Ni0.85Se nanoparticle films as CEs. This finding has inspired extensive studies on developing new metal selenides in order to seek more efficient CE materials for low-cost DSSCs, and a lot of meaningful results have been achieved in the past years. In this Account, we summarize recent advances in binary and mutinary metal selenides applied as CEs in DSSCs. The synthetic methods for metal selenides with various morphologies and stoichiometric ratios and deposition methods for CE films are described. We emphasize that the in situ growth method exhibits advantages over other methods for fabricating stable and efficient CEs. We focus on the effect of morphology on the electocatalytic and photovoltaic performance. Application of transparent metal selenide CEs in bifacial DSSCs and the superiority of in situ-grown metal selenide nanosheet fiber CEs used for fiber DSSCs are presented. In addition, we show that metal selenides with a hollow sphere structure can function not only as an efficient electrocatalyst but also as a light-scattering layer. Finally, we present our views on the current challenges and future development of metal selenide CE materials.
Hexagonal FeS nanosheets with high-energy (001) facets: Counter electrode materials superior to platinum for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:The catalytic activity of materials is highly dependent on their composition and surface structure, especially the density of low-coordinated surface atoms. In this work, we have prepared two-dimensional hexagonal FeS with high-energy (001) facets (FeS-HE-001) via a solution-phase chemical method. Nanosheets (NSs) with exposed high-energy planes usually possess better reaction activity, so FeS-HE-001 was used as a counter electrode (CE) material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). FeS-HE-001 achieved an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.88% (with the PCE of champion cells being 9.10%), which was almost 1.15 times higher than that of the Pt-based DSSCs (7.73%) measured in parallel. Cyclic voltammetry and Tafel polarization measurements revealed the excellent electrocatalytic activities of FeS-HE-001 towards the I3–/I– redox reaction. This can be attributed to the promotion of photoelectron transfer, which was measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe, and the strong I3– adsorption and reduction activities, which were investigated using first-principles calculations. The presence of high-energy (001) facets in the NSs was an important factor for improving the catalytic reduction of I3–. We believe that our method is a promising way for the design and synthesis of advanced CE materials for energy harvesting.

Abstract:Nickel cobalt sulfides (Ni-Co-S) have been extensive developed as platinum-free counter electrode (CE) materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSCs with Ni-Co-S CEs needs to be further improved by changing crystalline structure of Ni-Co-S. Herein, Ni-Co-S with amorphous structure have been synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass by a potential reversal electrodeposition technique. The morphology of Ni-Co-S films can be controlled through adjusting the molar ratio of Ni and Co ions in the electroplating solution. Ni-Co-S films can be directly applied as low-cost CEs of DSCs. The results demonstrate that Ni-Co-S CEs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance for I-3(-) reduction, owing to the synergistic effect and amorphous structure of Ni-Co-S films. Particularly, the DSC based on Ni-Co-S CE with the optimized Ni/Co ratio has achieved the high PCE of 8.18%, which is larger than that of the DSC with platinum (Pt) CE (6.33%).
Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides-Based Counter Electrodes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are gaining considerable interest as alternatives to the semiconductor-based thin film solar cells. The noble metal platinum (Pt) is conventionally used as counter electrode (CE) material for fabricating DSSCs. Since Pt is expensive and scarce, new materials have been explored to develop cost-effective Pt-free counter electrodes for DSSCs. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based counter electrodes have achieved the highest known power conversion efficiency ({\eta}) of 13%, which has stimulated research activities in 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for developing Pt-free DSSCs. In this review, progress made on alternative counter electrodes for fabricating low-cost Pt-free DSSCs, based on earth-abundant 2D TMDs including MoS2, WS2, TiS2, FeS2, CoS2, NiS2, SnS2, MoSe2, NbSe2, TaSe2, NiSe2, FeSe2, CoSe2, Bi2Se3 and their based composites, are discussed and summarized. Also, the considerable progress made on thin films of MoS2 and MoS2 based carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composites as efficient counter electrodes (CEs) for DSSCs are discussed, in terms of their electrochemical and photovoltaic properties. At present, PCE values higher than that of standard Pt CE have been recorded for a number of TMD-based CEs, which include MoS2 and MoSe2/thin films deposited on Mo foil, MoS2/CNTs, MoS2/graphene, MoS2/carbon, MoSe2/PEDOT:PSS, NbSe2, FeS2, FeSe2 nanosheets, TiS2/graphene, and NiS2/graphene hybrid systems in DSSCs, for the reduction of triiodide (I3-) to iodide (I-). The highest PCE ({\eta}=10.46%) versus Pt CE ({\eta}=8.25%) at 1 Sun (100 mW/cm2, AM 1.5G) was measured for DSSCs having a low cost and flexible CoSe2/carbon-nanoclimbing wall counter electrode deposited on a nickel foam.

Abstract:Establishing robust yet high-efficiency counter electrode (CE) is an essential challenge for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The CE made of carbon-based catalysts is experimentally proved to be an ideal alternative for noble Pt metal in DSSCs. Nevertheless, its reaction mechanisms remain unclear because of the lack of comprehensive understanding of its physical and chemical properties. Here, the DSSC based on the Ni3B/NiO incorporating N-doped carbon hollow spheres (N-CHS) and RGO (N-CHS/(Ni3B/NiO)/RGO) CE achieved a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.57%, which is 26.92% higher than that of the DSSC based on Pt CE. This can be attributed to: Firstly, RGO further promotes the formation of the Ni3B/NiO heterostructure to enhance electrocatalytic performance. Secondly, N-doping stimulates catalytic activity, benefited from the generation of more defects. Ultimately, the structural advantage of N-CHS/(Ni3B/NiO)/RGO nanocomposites not only lead to a high density of interfaces between the Ni3B and NiO components while maximizing its use efficiency but also synergistically accelerate the kinetics, thus boosting the PCE. This article highlights a powerful strategy of interfacial engineering and structural integration to rationally design nano-functional materials in energy conversion related fields.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have gained significant attention as a promising photovoltaic technology due to their simple fabrication methods and low cost. To improve the competitiveness of DSSC against other photovoltaic devices, enhancing the efficiency is crucial. In this study, we explore the incorporation of Ti3C2Tx, a two-dimensional (2D) material known for its excellent conductivity, into the fabrication of composite photoanode films for DSSC. We prepared ZnO/Ti3C2Tx composite films with different concentration of 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4wt%. The optimal photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.65% was achieved at a Ti3C2Tx concentration of 0.2wt%, representing a 41.4% improvement compared with 4.70% conversion efficiency of pure ZnO films. The introduction of Ti3C2Tx facilitated electron transport and increased electron transfer pathways, which enhanced photoelectric performance. These findings highlight the potential of Ti3C2Tx based composite photoanode for advancing the efficiency of DSSC.

In this study, we successfully fabricated a NiSe/Co 3 Se 4 hybrid counter electrode (CE) using a facile ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method, demonstrating its potential for enhancing the performance and stability of DSSCs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation showed hexagonal NiSe and monoclinic Co 3 Se 4 phases in the composite, with smaller crystallite sizes indicating better interfacial contacts. SEM and TEM micrographs show a well-defined nanostructure with spherical NiSe particles and rod-like Co 3 Se 4 particles. This results in a large surface area and improved porosity, as validated by BET analysis. Electrochemical studies, such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Tafel polarization, show that the NiSe/Co 3 Se 4 composite has superior electro catalytic activity compared to individual NiSe and Co 3 Se 4 electrodes, closely matching the performance of the Pt electrode. When integrated into DSSCs, the NiSe/Co 3 Se 4 composite CE obtained an energy conversion efficiency of 9.01%, with notably enhanced short-circuit current density ( J sc ) and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ). The NiSe/Co 3 Se 4 combination is a good contender for large-scale DSSC applications due to its strong photovoltaic performance and stability over 42 days under one-sun illumination.

Abstract:Unique wool-ball shaped nanocrystalline CoS was synthesized using solvothermal method in which dopamine (DA) was added as carbon source to combine with the CoS. The DA in situ polymerized and coated on the CoS particle surfaces during the solvothermal process. N, S co-doped carbon-encapsulated CoS(Co 9 S 8 ) were achieved after a post carbonization. In the composites, CoS(Co 9 S 8 ) nanocrystals and carbon are tightly bound and embedded into the amorphous carbon layer to form a spherical core–shell structure. Hybrid counter electrodes (CEs) fabricated with the product have good conductivity, dispersion and stability due to the synergetic effect between carbon and nanocrystalline CoS(Co 9 S 8 ). Charge transfer through the CE/electrolyte interfaces is improved by dopamine-carbon combination. In the optimal case, PCE of 8.82% of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with the hybrid CEs was achieved, which is close to that of the cell with Pt (8.86%) CE, and is a 41.12% increase compared with that of CoS CE cell with the structure of photoanode/N719/electrolyte (I − /I 3 − )/CE. Moreover, stability of the cells with the composite CEs was greatly improved. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared composites are promising alternatives to Pt-CEs for high-performance DSSCs. The reported preparation method will guide further developments in highly efficient carbon-based catalysts for electrochemistry and energy related applications.

Abstract:Composite counter electrodes have been shown to be a practical and effective strategy in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application. In this work, we designed and prepared a single-crystal Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) plate structure on flexible carbon fabric as a DSSC cathode, which combines the best of the two worlds, namely, the superior catalytic activity and hierarchical microstructure of kesterite CZTSe and the high conductivity and expanded framework of carbon fabric. The composite counter electrode presented a power conversion efficiency of 8.45% and a long-term bending reservation. The remarkable device property is due to the high catalytic activity, good adherence to conductive matrix grains, effective electron migration, and quick iodide species diffusion of the novel cathode. Our results suggest that the fabric composite could be a high-efficiency Pt-free cathode in DSSCs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:To achieve a satisfactory photovoltaic performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), counter electrode (CE) catalysts with low cost, superior catalytic activity, and excellent conductivity should be developed. In this work, the unique rhombic dodecahedron morphology of CoSe2/N-doped carbon (CoSe2/NC) and CoS2/N-doped carbon (CoS2/NC) hybrids with small-size pores were successfully prepared through direct selenization and sulfurization of ZIF-67, respectively. DSSCs fabricated with CoSe2/NC (CoS2/NC) electrode achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 9.06% (8.74%), superior to that of Pt-based DSSCs (8.03%). The satisfactory performance was mainly attributed to the synergic effect between CoSe2 (CoS2) and N-doped carbon. As for this hybrid, CoSe2 (CoS2) and the N-doped species (graphitic-N and pyridinic-N) of carbon framework as catalytic active centers supplied abundant active sites toward I-3(-) reduction, while NC as fast conductivity platforms facilitated the charge transfer. Meanwhile, the unique rhombic dodecahedron morphology with small-size pores of the hybrids could also accelerate the permeation of redox electrolyte, thus promoting the catalytic reaction between redox species (I-/I-3(-)) and inner active sites of CoSe2 (CoS2). Therefore, low-cost CoSe2/NC hybrid has great potential for replacing noble Pt for the reduction of I-3(-) in DSSCs.

Abstract:Herein, a composite of carbon fibers coated with bimetallic oxide NiCo2O4 are successfully synthesized by combination of electrospun and hydrothermal methods and applied as counter electrode (CE) catalytically for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). SEM images show the homogeneous distribution of NiCo2O4 nanosheets on the surface of CNFs, which provides enough active centers for electron collection and transmission and makes larger surface area. More importantly, the NiCo2O4/CNFs CE exhibits high efficiency and electrochemical stability, of which the short circuit current density (Jsc ) reachs 17.11 mA cm−2. Due to the employment of NiCo2O4/CNFs composite as CE, the photoelectric conversion efficiency has achieved 7.80%, obviously higher than those of CNFs (5.75%) and Pt (7.35%).The cost-effective NiCo2O4/CNFs composite may be used to replace the conventional Pt CEs alternatively.
