Abstract:In this work, a novel electrochemical (EC) oxidation system utilizing pulsed alternating current (PAC) and dual carbon felt (CF) electrodes has been established for sustainable degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with no addition of extra oxidant. The EC/PAC system showed high degradation efficiency and energy efficiency compared to the pulsed direct current (PDC) and direct current (DC) systems. The EC/PAC process was effective across a wide pH range of 3-11 for SMX removal. The results showed that the 1O2 confined to the CF electrode surface was the dominant oxidative specie that was generated from dissolved oxygen in the system. Under PAC conditions, the cathode and anode were rapidly switched on the same CF electrode, increasing the generation of 1O2 for enhanced SMX oxidation. Furthermore, the EC/PAC system demonstrated resistance to interference from various anions of different concentration levels found in natural environment. In contrast to the EC/PDC system, the EC/PAC system emerged as a promising option for more efficient H2O2 production. High-resolution mass spectrometry results revealed the SMX degradation pathways and byproducts, which were then evaluated for toxicity removal. Overall, the EC/PAC system offers a green and sustainable solution to future wastewater treatment, with high degradation rates, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

Abstract:This paper deals with the paired electrocatalytic H 2 O 2 -persulfate (H 2 O 2 -PS) activation to yield SO 4 – and OH for the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) mineralization. A filter-press cell with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a gas diffusion cathode (GDE) was used to form the PS (through the anodic oxidation (AO) of sulfate) and H 2 O 2 (via oxygen reduction reaction, ORR). Bulk electrolysis in the flow cell reached accumulation values of 1.48 mM PS and 4.80 mM H 2 O 2 in 100 mM Na 2 SO 4 at pH 3, with current density and mean linear flow velocity of j = 10 mA cm −2 , and u = 39.5 cm s −1 . On the other hand, the influence of the initial sulfate concentration 50 ≤ CSO42- ≤ 500 mM), applied current density (5 ≤ j ≤ 15 mA cm −2 ), initial PS and SMX concentrations (0 ≤ CPS ≤ 1 mM, 5 ≤ CSMX ≤ 20 mg L –1 ) was systematically addressed on the H 2 O 2 -PS process performance. The best trial achieved the total abatement of 20 mg L –1 of SMX in a 100 mM Na 2 SO 4 + 0.5 mM PS at pH 3, u = 39.5 cm s −1 , and j = 10 mA cm −2 . Lastly, a degradation pathway of SMX was proposed in which most of the by-products consisted of short-chained carboxylic acids and ammonium. Scavenger tests revealed that the degradation of SMX is provoked by OH (68.3 %), SO 4 – (3.9 %), and other oxidants (27.8 %).

Abstract:Herein, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation via electro-cocatalytic system with circulated Fe(III)/Fe(II) was investigated with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and dimensionally stable anode (DSA) for degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Radicals of OH and SO 4 − as well as non-radicals of 1 O 2 and Fe(IV) were all present in BDD/PMS/Fe(III) and DSA/PMS/Fe(III) systems, according to the results of scavenging experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Interestingly based on the results of chemical probe experiments, the ratio of OH, SO 4 − , and 1 O 2 were 9% (7.19 μmol/L), 76% (58.39 μmol/L), and 15% (11.45 μmol/L) in BDD/PMS/Fe(III) system, and were 28% (5.81 μmol/L), 18% (3.76 μmol/L), and 54% (10.93 μmol/L) in DSA/PMS/Fe(III) system. The yield of Fe(IV) in DSA/PMS/Fe(III) process was relatively higher than that in BDD/PMS/Fe(III) process. These results indicated that BDD/PMS/Fe(III) is a radical oxidation system while DSA/PMS/Fe(III) system is mainly non-radical system. Due to the high electrochemical activity of BDD anode, the one-electron transfer reaction might occur to produce more SO 4 − . The co-existing ions including Cl − , H 2 PO 4 − , and NO 3 − showed significant effects on the degradation efficiency of BDD/PMS/Fe(III) and nonsignificant impacts on DSA/PMS/Fe(III) process, indicating that DSA/PMS/Fe(III) process could be less affected by complex water matrix. BDD/PMS/Fe(III) is inclined to oxidize electron-rich contaminants, while DSA/PMS/Fe(III) is apt to oxidize electron-deficient contaminants. The degradation routes of SMX and its toxicity evolution were systematically studied with the analysis of byproducts. Overall results compared the oxidation mechanisms and primary oxidation pathways of electro-cocatalytic systems with BDD versus DSA anodes, and revealed the merits of each system for future selection and system optimization of treatment processes regarding targeted contaminants.

Abstract:Herein, the Ti4O7 electrode was combined for the first time with various oxidants to generate reactive oxygen species for the removal of different organic pollutants in an electrochemical oxidation (EO) system. The removal efficiency of organic pollutants, reaction mechanism, and degradation pathway were evaluated by electrochemical tests, reaction kinetics, electron paramagnetic resonance, quantum chemical, and density functional theory calculations. As a result, nearly 100 % removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was achieved within 12 min with a high kinetic rate constant of 0.259 min−1, and the kinetic rate constant was strongly dependent on the electrostatic potential. The O2 site on the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) molecule dominated the radical generation for the removal of SMX via the radical and non−radical process. This current study offers a novel approach toward the electrochemical activation of PMS in the elimination and degradation of various organic pollutant from wastewater.
Base-metal Oxide Semiconductor Electrodes for PPCP Degradation: Ti-doped Α-Fe2o3 for Sulfosalicylic Acid Oxidation As an Example.

Abstract:Sulfosalicylic acid is a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product with high toxicity, environmental persistence, and low biodegradability. Electrochemical oxidation has been demonstrated to be a promising way for hazardous organics treatment, but it is severely limited by the high cost and resource shortage of electrode materials. Base-metal oxide semiconductor anodes have the merits of low cost, diversity, and tunable energy levels for charge transfer, and thus may be alternatives to the electrodes for wastewater treatment. Herein, we found that Ti-doped α-Fe2O3, as an example, could be efficient for sulfosalicylic acid oxidation, reaching comparable faraday efficiency of sulfosalicylic acid to that of the boron-doped diamond electrode. Ti-doped electrodes exhibited both higher removal rates and current efficiency compared to the undoped. This could be mainly ascribed to the enhanced charge transfer rate constant. Kinetic analysis shows that the apparent reaction order, in terms of sulfosalicylic acid in bulk solution, depended on applied potential and pollutant concentration. Mechanism study shows that the oxidation of sulfosalicylic acid was mainly through indirect pathway. Moreover, the oxidation products were determined and the oxidation mechanism was proposed. This study may open a door to employ base-metal oxide semiconductor anodes for the efficient treatment of organic wastewater.

Abstract:The excessive use of antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is causing environmental pollution and endangering human health and the ecosystem. Using transition metals as catalysts to activate persulfate (PS) can effectively degrade the organic pollutants in the advanced oxidation process (AOP). However, the high dissolution of the transition metals leads to poor stability, low efficiency in pollutant degradation, and secondary pollution. In this work, a graphitized carbon encapsulated Co (Co@EC) anode is developed for electrochemically activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade SMX. It is found that the synergistic effect of Co@EC, PMS, and current significantly enhances SMX degradation. Under optimal conditions (current density of 5mAcm-2, pH of 9, and PMS concentration of 0.25mM), the Co@EC anode can completely remove 10μM of SMX in 9min, a much higher efficiency compared to processes without PMS, Co, or current. The rapid reaction kinetics (6.69×10-1min-1) at optimal conditions are associated with the two main active species of 1O2 and O2•- during electroactivation. Furthermore, the Co@EC anode maintains high degradation efficiency and low dissolution after repeated cycling tests due to its structural stability. These findings provide new insights and strategies for developing stable catalysts.
Electrochemical activation of periodate: A novel strategy for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole with wide applicable pH range

Abstract:Herein, this work investigated a novel strategy utilizing electrochemical activation of periodate (EC/PI) for effective degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with wide appliable pH range. The EC/PI system achieved 100% degradation efficiency of SMX under optimum conditions of 7.78 mA/cm2 current density, 1 mmol/L IO4 − dosage, and 20 mmol/L Na2SO4 as the supporting electrolyte. Strong synergistic effect between applied electric current and IO4 − activation was observed, indicating the robustness of EC/PI system. Through a series of chemical probe experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, it was revealed that EC/PI is a composite oxidation system with multiple active species, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), iodate radical (IO3 •), and singlet oxygen (1O2). The production mechanisms of these active species were comprised of two routes: direct production via the electrode supplying electrons and indirect production via hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide radical (O2 •−) as intermediates. The EC/PI process was slightly affected by the coexisting substances in the water background, and cycle experiments verified its degradation stability, indicating that this EC/PI system exhibits excellent capacity for treatment of authentic wastewater. Finally, the SMX degradation intermediates and pathways were obtained using mass spectrometry analysis and Gauss theory calculations. These results indicated the establishment of EC/PI system provides an efficient and environmental-friendly strategy for treatment of emerging organic pollutants.

Abstract:A novel oxidation system of in-situ electrogenerated persulfate (EO-PS) derived from sulphate in water and its activation by Fe/Mn bimetal co-functionalized sludge biochar (Fe/Mn-SBC) was built in this study to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The result showed that 98.8% of SMX was degraded within 60 min in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system. The abundant defect structures, oxygen-containing functional groups, Mn(Ⅱ)/Mn(Ⅲ) and magnetic Fe3O4 on Fe/Mn-SBC surface guaranteed its outstanding activation performance for EO-PS. The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed that non-radicals of 1O2 and surface-bound radicals were the dominant contributors for SMX elimination. The pathway Ⅰ and Ⅲ were proposed to be the main pathways of SMX degradation in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system based on its transformed products (TPs) identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Overall, the TPs of SMX generated in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system were less toxic to aquatic organisms compared to that of SMX. Also, EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system displayed favorable degradation performance for SMX in real waters (98.5%, 91.1%, 84.8%, 81.2% and 77.4% in pure water, tap water, river water, lake water and sewage effluent, respectively). Additionally, Fe/Mn-SBC exhibited the easy magnetic separation, excellent reusability and environmental safety. This study developed a promising technology of in-situ EO-PS and its activation by carbon-based material for SMX elimination without addition of exogenous PS, in addition to that the resource utilization of sewage sludge and wastewater sulphate were simultaneously achieved.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalyst reuse and the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )-based advanced oxidation processes under near-neutral conditions remain an obstacle in wastewater remediation. Herein, we put forward a versatile catalytic membrane with Cu-doped MnO active layer anchoring on the polydopamine-modified electrospinning polyvinylidene fluoride (PDA@PVDF) base. The Cu-MnO@PDA@PVDF membrane was conferred admirable sulfamethoxazole (SMX) reduction (over 90% within 90 min) and clogging alleviation (relative flux recovery to 0.98) capabilities via in situ H 2 O 2 activation at pH 8, which was slightly affected by actual water background. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and trapping tests unveiled the joint contribution of • OH, O 2 •− and 1 O 2 , with • OH exerting the supreme role in SMX oxidation. The inherent characteristics of dual Mn-Cu centers on the membrane surface for facilitation of electron transfer, H 2 O 2 adsorption and barrierless dissociation to • OH were further elucidated by electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) computation. Comprehensively, this study proposes a facile procedure and insights into engineering catalytic membrane coupled H 2 O 2 strategy for refractory organic treatment at ambient conditions.

Abstract:In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was applied as the model pollutant to assess the performance of pulsed current (PC) waveforms in the decontamination efficiency of the PC/peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/Fe(III) process and to investigate underlying oxidation mechanisms. Among the various waveforms tested, the sinusoidal wave (SIN), combined with the Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA) electrode, demonstrated superior degradation performance, with the order being SIN > ramp > square > direct current (DC). The operational conditions for the SIN/PMS/Fe(III) system were optimized to an initial pH of 3, a voltage of 6 V, 0.6 mmol/L of Fe3+, 1.0 mmol/L of PMS, and a frequency of 1 kHz. The results of quenching and probe experiments confirmed the generation of abundant reactive radicals such as •OH, SO4•−, O2•−, Fe(IV), and 1O2 in the SIN/PMS/Fe(III) process, which collectively enhanced the degradation of SMX. Additionally, results of high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis were employed to identify the SMX oxidation byproducts, and the toxicity of SMX byproducts was evaluated. Overall, the SIN/PMS/Fe(III) process exhibits effective degradation capacity with high energy efficiency, establishing itself as an effective strategy for the practical treatment of medical wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, the pulsed electrochemical (PE) system was investigated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with the addition of Fe(III) to achieve efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with reduced energy consumption, in comparison with the direct current (DC) electrochemical system. The operational conditions of PE/PMS/Fe(III) system were optimized as 4 kHz pulse frequency, 50% duty cycle, and pH 3, at which 67.6% reduction of energy consumption and enhanced degradation performance were achieved compared to the DC/PMS/Fe(III) system. Results of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis and quenching and chemical probe experiment revealed the presence of • OH, SO 4 •− , and 1 O 2 in the system, with • OH being the dominant role. The concentrations of these active species were averagely 15 ± 1% higher in the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system than those of the DC/PMS/Fe(III) system. Identification of SMX byproducts was achieved based on high resolution mass spectrometry analysis to predict the degradation pathways. The SMX byproducts could eventually be eliminated by the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system with extended treatment time. Overall, the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system was demonstrated with high energy and degradation performance, and is appear to be an robust strategy for practical treatment of wastewater.

Abstract:This study presents an electrolysis system utilizing a novel self-circulation process of sulfate (SO42−) and persulfate (S2O82−) ions based on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and an activated carbon fiber (ACF) cathode, which is designed to enable electrochemical remediation of environmental contaminants with reduced use of chemical reagents and minimized residues. The production of S2O82− and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the BDD anode and ACF cathode, respectively, is identified as the source of active radicals for the contaminant degradation. The initiator, sulfate, is identified by comparing the degradation efficiency in NaSO4 and NaNO3 electrolytes. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed that the SO4−· and ·OH generated on the ACF cathode are the main reactive radicals. A comparison of the degradation efficiency and the generated S2O82−/H2O2 of the divided/undivided electrolysis system is used to demonstrate the superiority of the synergistic effect between the BDD anode and ACF cathode. This work provides evidence of the effectiveness of the philosophy of "catalysis in lieu of supplementary chemical agents" and sheds light on the mechanism of the generation and transmission of reactive species in the BDD and ACF electrolysis system, thereby offering new perspectives for the design and optimization of electrolysis systems.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) material with abundant OH was successfully prepared by co-precipitation method, and a water purification system of Ni2Fe0.25Al0.75-LDH activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was constructed to rapidly degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) pollutants. The optimal conditions for the degradation of SMX in the system were as follows: 0.30 g/L Ni2Fe0.25Al0.75-LDH, 0.30 mM PMS, pH = 7 and 90 % SMX was removed in 10 min and almost completely in 40 min, which was consistent with the predicted results of response surface methodology (RSM) analysis. The abundant OH in Ni2Fe0.25Al0.75-LDH could form M(O)OSO3 complexes with PMS, accelerating the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoting the removal of SMX. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra showed that SO4-, OH, O2- and 1O2 also existed in the system. The surface-bound SO4- and O2- contributed greatly to the removal of SMX and the electron transfer between metals was also conducive to the production of active substances. The possible degradation pathways and intermediates of SMX were proposed. The toxicity assessment software tool (T.E.S.T) and total organic carbon (TOC) results indicated that the Ni2Fe0.25Al0.75-LDH/PMS system could reduce the overall environmental risk of SMX to some extent. This study provided a new strategy for the practical application of heterogeneous catalysts in sewage treatment.

Abstract:Lithium–aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li–Al LDHs) are a unique group of LDHs and their applications have attracted wide attention. Herein, Li–Al LDH was prepared using the hydrothermal method and was then used to activate peroxymonosulfates (PMS) for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). It was found that 0.4 g/L catalysts, 1.57 mM PMS, and pH = 11.00 were the optimal conditions for the degradation process of the Li–Al LDH/PMS system at 30 °C. Under these conditions, the degradation rate of 80 mg/L SMX could reach 98.2% within 130 min. Meanwhile, the catalyst also showed superior stability and recoverability. After five cycles, the degradation rate of SMX was still higher than 95.3%. Based on free radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance results, both the radical and nonradical pathways synergistically completed the degradation in the Li–Al LDH/PMS system, with the nonfree radical (singlet oxygen) playing the predominant role. A reasonable degradation pathway was also proposed based on the detection of intermediates in the degradation process. The Li–Al LDH/PMS system, as expected, has great potential for efficient wastewater catalytic treatment.

Facile synthesis of Cu-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve for the efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole via peroxymonosulfate activation

Abstract:Advanced processes for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based oxidation are efficient in eliminating toxic and refractory organic pollutants from sewage. The activation of electron-withdrawing HSO 5 − releases reactive species, including sulfate radical (·SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide radical (·O 2 − ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which can induce the degradation of organic contaminants. In this work, we synthesized a variety of M-OMS-2 nanorods (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Fe) by doping Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , or Fe 3+ into manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) to efficiently remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) via PMS activation. The catalytic performance of M-OMS-2 in SMX elimination via PMS activation was assessed. The nanorods obtained in decreasing order of SMX removal rate were Cu-OMS-2 (96.40%), Co-OMS-2 (88.00%), Ni-OMS-2 (87.20%), Fe-OMS-2 (35.00%), and OMS-2 (33.50%). Then, the kinetics and structure–activity relationship of the M-OMS-2 nanorods during the elimination of SMX were investigated. The feasible mechanism underlying SMX degradation by the Cu-OMS-2/PMS system was further investigated with a quenching experiment, high-resolution mass spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. Results showed that SMX degradation efficiency was enhanced in seawater and tap water, demonstrating the potential application of Cu-OMS-2/PMS system in sewage treatment.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical wastewater needs to be treated properly before it can be discharged due to the presence of high-concentration antibiotic pollutants. Electrochemical oxidation is a promising process for decentralized treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater. In this study, electrochemical oxidation of a typical antibiotic, i. e. sulfadiazine (SDZ), was investigated by using titanium suboxide mesh (TiSOM) anode. The results showed that the 60 min electrolysis could achieve almost 100% removal of SDZ based on 0.05 mol L−1 Na2SO4, pH = 6.33, and current density of 10 mA cm−2. Under these conditions, the abatement of SDZ proceeded through indirect OH-mediated oxidation rather than direct electron transfer reaction, indicated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurement. The TiSOM anode exhibited a high oxygen evolution potential (2.2 V vs standard hydrogen electrode, SHE) for OH formation and long-term stability in treatment of real pharmaceutical wastewater. The mesh structure of TiSOM anode enabled a large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA, 2517.3 cm2) derived from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement, and an improved mass transfer from bulk electrolyte to the anode under flow-through operation. This makes the TiSOM anode more advantageous than flat-plate anode. The degradation pathway of SDZ was underlined on a qualitative basis by using ion chromatography, ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This study provides an effective manner for electrochemical treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater by using a mesh-structured TiSO anode material.

Abstract:In this work, empirical kinetics, response surface method (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to model and optimize electrochemically activated persulfate process. Electrochemically activated persulfate using a sacrificial iron anode was used as a cost effective method to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aqueous solution. The individual and the interactive effects of operation parameters such as pH, applied current, persulfate concentration and electrolysis time were investigated. Eight unseen experiments beyond the experimental design were performed to test the accuracy of the generalization ability of the models. Based on the unseen experiments, ANN demonstrated the superiority in predicting the results when compared to empirical kinetics and RSM modeling. Response surface analysis was used to illustrate the interactions between parameters pH/applied current, pH/persulfate concentration and pH/electrolysis time. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the relative importance of the influencing parameters were of the following order: electrolysis time > pH > applied current > persulfate concentration. The highest degradation efficiency was achieved with the optimal conditions of pH of 3.43, the applied current of 18.4 mA, the persulfate concentration of 3.54 mM, and the electrolysis time of 60 min. The electrical energy consumption was also calculated at this optimized condition (0.04 kWh ⋅ m−1order−1). The work provides a novel predictive and optimized model for SMX removal under different conditions by electrochemically activated persulfate.

Abstract:Electrochemically activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade organic pollutants is one of the most attractive advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to address environmental issues, but the high cost, poor stability, and low degradation efficiency of the anode materials hinder their application. Herein, an economic, self-supporting, robust, and durable LiFe5O8 on Fe substrate (Fe@LFO) anode is reported to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). When PDS is electrochemically activated by the Fe@LFO anode, the degradation rate of SMX is significantly improved. It is found that hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radical (O2•-), singlet oxygen (1O2), Fe(Ⅳ), activated PDS (PDS*), and direct electron transfer (DET) reactions synergistically contribute to the degradation of SMX, which can realize the degradation of SMX in four possible routes: cleavage of the isoxazole ring, hydroxylation of the benzene ring, oxidation of the aniline group, and cleavage of the S-N bond, as evidenced by a series of tests of radicals quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS). Furthermore, Fe@LFO has good structural stability, excellent cyclability and low degradation cost, demonstrating its great potential for practical applications. This work contributes to a stable and effective anode material in the field of AOPs.

Abstract:In this work, cobalt-nickel powder (Co-NP) synthesized through electroless plating was used as a heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in the aqueous phase. Compared with different oxidation systems and different catalysts, it was proved that Co-NP had excellent catalytic ability, fast electron transfer rate and good stability. The effects of key parameters (initial pH, SMX concentration, catalyst and PMS dosages) on SMX degradation and ion leaching were studied in detail. Furthermore, the sensitivity of inorganic anions and different pollutants towards the Co-NP/PMS system was studied to investigate its application in natural water bodies. Quenching test showed that the main reactive oxygen species generated during the reaction were OH and SO4−, of which SO4− played a predominating role. Combined with XPS analysis, the activation mechanism was concluded that free radicals were mainly generated through the valence change of Co and Ni. Based on the seven intermediates measured through ultrahigh performance liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS), the possible degradation pathways of SMX were proposed. Notably, this study provided a new kind of supporter for advanced oxidation processes and electroless plating technology.
