Abstract:Colloidal monolayers serve as fundamental building blocks in fabricating diverse functional materials, pivotal for surface modifications, chemical reactivity, and controlled assembly of nanoparticles. In this article, we report the formation of colloidal monolayers generated by drying an aqueous droplet containing soft colloids confined between two hydrophilic parallel plates. The analysis of the kinetics of evaporation in this confined mode showed that: (i) for a significant portion of the drying time, the drops adopt a catenoid configuration; (ii) in the penultimate stage of drying, the catenoid structure undergoes division into two daughter droplets; (iii) the three-phase contact line remains pinned at a specific location while it continuously slips at all other locations. The interplay between interface-assisted particle deposition onto the solid substrate and the time evolution of particle concentration within the droplet during evaporation results in unique microstructural features in the deposited patterns. Notably, these deposit patterns exhibit reflection symmetry. The microstructural features of the dried deposits are further quantified by calculating the particle number density, inter-particle separation, areal disorder parameter, and bond orientational order parameter. The variation of these parameters for deposits formed under different conditions, such as by altering the spacing between parallel plates and the concentration of microgel particles in the droplet, is discussed.

Abstract:Evaporation alters the molecular interactions and leads to phase separation within the evaporating liquid. The question of whether evaporation could lead to specific phase separation at the liquid interface and eventually to the formation of patterns in small liquid volumes remains unaddressed. In this study, we investigated the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of an organic polymeric monomer in a salt-containing buffer within an evaporating sessile droplet. We observed that LLPS occurs at the dynamic interface of the droplet and leads to the formation of polymeric coacervates or regular lattice patterns depending on the initial concentration of the polymer. Our results show that the interaction of salt with the polymeric monomers at the droplet interface can lead to LLPS and the formation of regular patterns. This study suggests that the sessile droplet setup can be utilized to achieve very regular patterns as a result of LLPS.

Abstract:The shape of deposits obtained from drying drops containing colloidal particles matters for technologies such as inkjet printing, microelectronics and bioassay manufacturing. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter drops containing colloidal particles is investigated experimentally with microscopy and profilometry, and theoretically with an inhouse finite-element code. The system studied involves aqueous drops containing titania nanoparticles evaporating on a glass substrate. Deposit shapes from spotted drops at different pH values are measured using a laser profilometer. Our results show that the pH of the solution influences the dried deposit pattern, which can be ring-like or more uniform. The transition between these patterns is explained by considering how DLVO interactions such as the electrostatic and van der Waals forces modify the particle deposition process. Also a phase diagram is proposed to describe how the shape of a colloidal deposit results from the competition between three flow patterns: a radial flow driven by evaporation at the wetting line, a Marangoni recirculating flow driven by surface tension gradients, and the transport of particles towards the substrate driven by DLVO interactions. This phase diagram explains three types of deposits commonly observed experimentally, such as a peripheral ring, a small central bump, or a uniform layer. Simulations and experiments are found in very good agreement.

Abstract:Drying of binary sessile droplets consisting of ethanol and octamethyltrisiloxane on a high-energy surface is investigated. During the process of evaporation, the droplets undergo liquid-liquid phase separation, resulting in the appearance of microdroplets at the liquid-air interface, which subsequently violently burst. This phase separation is attributed to water vapor transfer into the droplet, which modifies the solubility and leads to the formation of a ternary mixture. The newly formed ternary mixture may undergo nucleation and growth or spinodal decomposition, depending on the droplet composition path. By control of the relative humidity of air, phase separation can be mitigated or even eliminated. The droplets also display high mobility and complex wetting behavior due to phase separation, with two contracting and two spreading stages. The mass loss experiments reveal that the droplets undergo three distinct drying stages with an enhanced evaporation rate observed during the phase separation stage. A modified diffusion-limited model was employed to predict the evaporation rate, accounting for the physiochemical changes during evaporation and proved to be consistent with experimental observations. The findings of this work enhance our understanding of a coupled fundamental process involving the evaporation of multicomponent mixtures, wetting, and phase separation.

Abstract:The evaporation of drops of colloidal suspensions plays an important role in numerous contexts, such as the production of powdered dairies, the synthesis of functional supraparticles, and virus and bacteria survival in aerosols or drops on surfaces. The presence of colloidal particles in the evaporating drop eventually leads to the formation of a dense shell that may undergo a shape instability. Previous works propose that, for drops evaporating very fast, the instability occurs when the particles form a rigid porous solid, constituted of permanently aggregated particles at random close packing. To date, however, no measurements could directly test this scenario and assess whether it also applies to drops drying at lower evaporation rates, severely limiting our understanding of this phenomenon and the possibility of harnessing it in applications. Here, we combine macroscopic imaging and space- and time-resolved measurements of the microscopic dynamics of colloidal nanoparticles in drying drops, measuring the evolution of the thickness of the shell and the spatial distribution and mobility of the nanoparticles. We find that, above a threshold evaporation rate, the drop undergoes successively two distinct shape instabilities. While the second instability is due to the permanent aggregation of nanoparticles, as hypothesized in previous works on fast-evaporating drops, we show that the first one results from a reversible glass transition of the shell, unreported so far. We rationalize our findings and discuss their implications in the framework of a unified state diagram for the drying of colloidal drops.

Influence of Eu-doping on wettability of TiO2 thin films

Abstract:In this work nanocrystalline titanium dioxide thin films doped with Eu have been presented. Structural investigation results have shown that amount of Eu in TiO2 matrix has meaningful influence on properties of the thin films, particularly on TiO2 phase and grain sizes. Our measurements have shown that Eu increases photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Eu also has high influence on adsorption of OH- groups and H2O particles on the thin films surface. The results of wettability measurements have shown that 0.1 at. % of Eu-dopant in TiO{ia2} matrix allows to obtain hydrophilic anatase structure, which is stable up to 800 °C. The wettability of nanocrystalline TiO2:Eu (0.1 at. %) thin film also increase with the increase of temperature during additional annealing. The value of wetting angle of TiO2:Eu (0.1 % at.) thin film decrease at about 40 % by additional annealing up to 800 °C (from 85 down to 68 degrees). The increase of the wettability of the TiO2:Eu (0.1 at. %) thin film by additional annealing was also connected with decrease of quantity of OH- groups and H2O particles, which were adsorbed on the thin film surface.
Single-Step Control of Liquid-Liquid Crystalline Phase Separation by Depletion Gradients

Abstract:Fine-tuning nucleation and growth of colloidal liquid crystalline (LC) droplets, also known as tactoids, is highly desirable in both fundamental science and technological applications. However, the tactoid structure results from the trade-off between thermodynamics and nonequilibrium kinetics effects, and controlling liquid-liquid crystalline phase separation (LLCPS) in these systems is still a work in progress. Here, a single-step strategy is introduced to obtain a rich palette of morphologies for tactoids formed via nucleation and growth within an initially isotropic phase exposed to a gradient of depletants. The simultaneous appearance is shown of rich LC structures along the depleting potential gradient, where the position of each LC structure is correlated with the magnitude of the depleting potential. Changing the size (nanoparticles) or the nature (polymers) of the depleting agent provides additional, precise control over the resulting LC structures through a size-selective mechanism, where the depletant may be found both within and outside the LC droplets. The use of depletion gradients from depletants of varying sizes and nature offers a powerful toolbox for manipulation, templating, imaging, and understanding heterogeneous colloidal LC structures.

Abstract:The evaporation of polymer solution droplet is an important in solution-based polymer film fabrications, such as inkjet print, spray coatings, and droplet casting etc. In this work, we investigated the effect of droplet size, solvent evaporation rate, and concentration on “coffee-ring” effect, crystal nucleation, polymorphism, and morphology of dried poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solution droplets with atomic force microscopy (AFM) method. We found that the crystal structure, morphology and crystal distribution in the center and edge regions of dried PVDF droplets were different due to “coffee-ring” effect. The “coffee-ring” effect of dried PVDF droplets was mainly composited of accumulated crystals at the edge region of droplet, which was mainly made by crystallization of migrated chains. The interplay between migration of chains, crystallization and solidification of PVDF droplets significantly influenced the formation of “coffee-ring”. In addition, our results showed that the decrease of droplet size and controlling solvent evaporation rate were effective ways to improve the PVDF β-phase nucleation and decrease crystal size.

Abstract:The transport and aggregation of particles in suspensions is an important process in many physicochemical and industrial processes. In this work, we study the transport of particles in an evaporating binary droplet. Surprisingly, the accumulation of particles occurs not only at the contact line (due to the coffee-stain effect) or at the solid substrate (due to sedimentation) but also at a particular radial position near the liquid-air interface, forming a "ring", which we term as the Marangoni ring. The formation of this ring is primarily attributed to the solutal Marangoni flow triggered by the evaporation dynamics of the water-glycerol droplet. Experiments and simulations show fair agreement in the volume evolution and the general structure of the solutal Marangoni flow, that is, the Marangoni vortex. Experiments show that the location of the Marangoni ring is strongly correlated with the Marangoni vortex. However, finite element numerical simulations fail to describe the particle distribution seen in the experiments. Interestingly, the particles not only accumulate to form the Marangoni ring but also assemble as colloidal crystals close to the liquid-air interface, yielding iridescence. The formation of the colloidal crystals in the experiments is strong evidence that non-hydrodynamic interactions, which are not represented in the simulations, also play a significant role in our system.

Abstract:Evaporation of multicomponent drops can induce liquid-liquid phase separation and spatial reconfiguration of phases. Here, we unveil several novel dynamics near the contact line of evaporating multicomponent drops containing polyethylene glycol and dextran. The interplay between background Marangoni flow and self-migration of nucleated microdroplets creates both unstable and stable equilibrium points. This leads to either continuous migration or stepwise advancement of microdroplets, influenced by random coalescence events. Tiny dextran microdroplets nucleating at the contact line can migrate toward the bulk only by growing in size with coalescence events. Our findings offer new insights into the fundamental understanding of evaporating multicomponent drops and factors influencing the spatial segregation of phases in evaporative liquid-liquid phase separation with implications in prebiotic biomolecular reactions to industrial applications.

Abstract:Nuclear pore complexes have been isolated in association with a 150 A thick lamina by detergent and salt fractionation of nuclear envelopes from rat liver. The pore complexes exhibit characteristic morphology and appear to be attached in a highly specific orientation to the lamina, which extends over relatively large areas. The pore complex-lamina fraction is composed of three major and several minor polypeptides with little or no DNA, RNA, or phospholipid. It is suggested that the association of the pore complexes and the lamina reflects the structural arrangement of the nuclear periphery in vivo.

Abstract:Phase separation occurs in emulsion droplets containing poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), glycerol, and ethanol to form a glycerol-in-PEGDA structure, and the phase separation process is found to depend on the droplet size. The mechanism of this size-dependent phase separation is dependent on the droplet sizes changing the phase separation time by changing the evaporation speed of mutual solvent ethanol, and the relationship between the separation time T and the droplet diameter D is derived as T approximate to D-2, which has been validated by experiment results. According to this finding, the structures of the droplets can be designed by applying UV curing at different stages of the phase separation, and the monodispersity of droplets is necessary to achieve polymerized particles with the same structure.
Disentangling kinetics from thermodynamics in heterogeneous colloidal systems

Abstract:Nucleation and growth (N&G) - the emergence of a new phase within an initially homogeneous one - is one of the most important physical phenomena by which gas-liquid, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid phase separation takes place. Accordingly, thermodynamics sets the asymptotic boundaries towards which the system must evolve, while kinetics tries to cope with it by imposing the transport rates at which phase separation is realized. In all heterogeneous colloidal systems observed in nature, the composition, shape, structure and ultimately physical properties result from the trade-off between thermodynamics and kinetics. In this work we demonstrate, by carefully selecting colloidal systems and controlling phase separation in microfluidic devices, that it becomes possible to go beyond N&G, disentangling kinetics effects from thermodynamics in composition, structure and physical properties of the final system. Using amyloid fibril and cellulose nanocrystal filamentous colloids for which the binodal curve defining the two-phase region in the phase diagram is given by two separate vertical lines, we extrude a solution set at one thermodynamic branch inside the other branch, realizing nematic or cholesteric droplets where the composition is set by thermodynamics, while the structure and morphology are defined by dynamic flow parameters. We demonstrate that departing from the N&G paradigm unveils new physical phenomena, such as orders of magnitude shorter timescales, a wider phase diagram and internal cholesteric structures that are not observable via conventional LLPS. We also show that by co-dispersing plasmonic gold nanoparticles within colloidal liquid crystalline droplets, our approach enables on-demand fabrication of multicomponent heterogeneous liquid crystals, enhancing their potential, and introducing original fundamental and technological directions in multicomponent structured fluids.

Abstract:When drops are placed on a sufficiently soft surface, the drop surface tension drives an out of plane deformation around the contact line (i.e., a wetting ridge). For soft elastomeric surfaces that are swollen with a liquid, capillarity from a drop can induce a phase separation in the wetting ridge. Using confocal microscopy, we study the dynamics of phase separation at the wetting ridge of glycerol drops on silicone elastomers, which are swollen with silicone oils of varying viscosity (i.e., molecular weight). We show that the viscosity of the swelling oil plays a large role in the oil separation size and separation rate. For networks swollen to near their maximum swelling (i.e., saturated), lower viscosity oil separates more and separates faster at early times compared to larger viscosity oil. During late-stage wetting, the growth rate of the separation is a function of viscosity and swelling ratio, which can be described by a simple diffusive model and a defined wetting ridge geometry. In this late-stage wetting, the higher viscosity oil evidently grows faster, likely because it is further from reaching equilibrium. Interestingly, the separated oil phase region grows with a nearly constant, geometrically similar shape. Understanding how phase separation occurs on swollen substrates should provide information on how to control drop spreading, sliding, adhesion, or friction on such surfaces.

Abstract:Drops in contact with swollen, elastomeric substrates can induce a capillary mediated phase separation in wetting ridges. Using confocal microscopy, we visualize phase separation of oligomeric silicone oil from a cross-linked silicone network during steady-state sliding of water drops. We find an inverse relationship between the oil tip height and the drop sliding speed, which is rationalized by competing transport timescales of the oil molecules: separation rate versus drop-advection speed. Use of Hydroxyapatite Cement to Support Implants in Extraction Sockets

Abstract:&NA; Bioactive cements based on calcium phosphate chemistry have been developed to serve as bone substitute materials. One such commerical product, BoneSourceTM, is a hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) used for small bone defects in the craniofacial complex. We have investigated the possibility that HAC could be used to support bone growth adjacent to dental implants placed in immediate tooth extraction sites. Variable levels of bone contact were noted up to 3 months postimplantation. Considerable loss of HAC occurred and was thought to be because of “washout” of the cement before complete cement setting. When HAC was immobile in the surgical site, the bioactive nature of the cement led to HAC resorption and bone deposition. Efforts to maintain the HAC in situ should be expanded so that the full clinical potential of the HAC can be realized. (Implant Dent 2000;9:45‐50)

Abstract:A coupled phase‐field‐fluid dynamics framework is developed to simulate morphology formation of multicomponent crystalline thin films upon drying. The behavior of the coupled model is verified. Simulations of the morphology formation in a ternary drying film undergoing evaporation‐induced liquid–liquid phase separation and crystallization are presented for various structure formation pathways, depending on the mixture thermodynamic and kinetic properties. In numerous solution‐processed thin films, a complex morphology resulting from liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) or from polycrystallization arises during the drying or subsequent processing steps. The morphology has a strong influence on the performance of the final device but unfortunately, the process–structure relationship is often poorly and only qualitatively understood. This is because many different physical mechanisms (miscibility, evaporation, crystallization, diffusion, and advection) are active at potentially different time scales and because the kinetics plays a crucial role: the morphology develops until it is kinetically quenched far from equilibrium. In order to unravel the various possible structure formation pathways, a unified theoretical framework that takes into account all these physical phenomena is proposed. This phase‐field simulation tool is based on the Cahn–Hilliard equations for diffusion and the Allen–Cahn equation for crystallization and evaporation, which are coupled to the equations for the dynamics of the fluid. The behavior of the coupled model based on simple test cases is discussed and verified. Furthermore, how this framework allows to investigate the morphology formation in a drying film undergoing evaporation‐induced LLPS and crystallization, which is typically a situation encountered, is illustrated, for example, in organic photovoltaics applications.
Flattened and wrinkled encapsulated droplets: Shape-morphing induced by gravity and evaporation

Abstract:We report surprising morphological changes of suspension droplets (containing class II hydrophobin protein HFBI from Trichoderma reesei and water) as they evaporate with a contact line pinned on a rigid solid substrate. Both pendant and sessile droplets display the formation of an encapsulating elastic film as the bulk concentration of solute reaches a critical value during evaporation, but the morphology of the droplet varies significantly: for sessile droplets, the elastic film ultimately crumples in a nearly flattened area close to the apex while in pendant droplets, circumferential wrinkling occurs close to the contact line. These different morphologies are understood through a gravito-elasto-capillary model that predicts the droplet morphology and the onset of shape changes, as well as showing that the influence of the direction of gravity remains crucial even for very small droplets (where the effect of gravity can normally be neglected). The results pave the way to control droplet shape in several engineering and biomedical applications.

Abstract:In drying liquid films of polymer-colloid mixtures, the stratification in which polymers are placed on top of larger colloids is studied. It is often presumed that the formation of segregated polymer-colloid layers is solely due to the proportion in size at fast evaporation as in binary colloid mixtures. By comparing experiments with a theoretical model, we found that the transition in viscosity near the drying interface was another important parameter for controlling the formation of stratified layers in polymer-colloid mixtures. At high evaporation rates, increased polymer concentrations near the surface lead to a phase transition from semidilute to concentrated regime, in which colloidal particles are kinetically arrested. Stratification only occurs if the formation of a stratified layer precedes the evolution to the concentrated regime near the drying interfaces. Otherwise, the colloids will be trapped by the polymers in the concentrated regime before forming a segregated layer. Also, no stratification is observed if the initial polymer concentration is too low to form a sufficiently high polymer concentration gradient within a short period of time. Our findings are relevant for developing solution-cast polymer composite for painting, antifouling and antireflective coatings.

Abstract:-- A scientific hurdle in manufacturing solid films by drying colloidal layers is preventing them from fracturing. This paper examines how the drying rate of colloidal liquids influences the particle packing at the nanoscale in correlation with the crack patterns observed at the macroscale. Increasing the drying rate results in more ordered, denser solid structures, and the dried samples have more cracks.Yet, introducing a holding period (at a prescribed point) during the drying protocol results in a more disordered solid structure with significantly less cracks. To interpret these observations, this paper conjectures that a longer drying protocol favors the formation of aggregates. It is further argued that the number and size of the aggregates increase as the drying rate decreases. This results in the formation of a more disordered, porous film from the viewpoint of the particle packing, and a more resistant film, i.e. less cracks, from the macroscale viewpoint.
