Abstract:Objective: The price of animal production will be affected by the significant increase in feed costs. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of adding waste cassava pulp to fer¬mented total mixed ration (FTMR) on nutrient utilization, rumen ecology, and microbial protein synthesis in tropical sheep. Materials and Methods: A 3 × 3 replicated Latin square design was used to randomly arrange nine crossbreed lambs (Santa Inês × Dorper) with an initial body weight (BW) of 18.7 ± 1.6 kg (mean ± SD). During a 21-day trial, the animal was offered a random selection of concentrate diets and rice straw (control), total mixed ration (TMR), or FTMR. During the investigation, data on nutrition utilization, rumen ecology, and microbial protein synthesis were analyzed using analysis of variance. Results: The finding shows that FTMR had significantly higher dry matter (DM) intake and DM intake per BW than either TMR or control (p < 0.05). Lamb fed on FTMR had significantly higher DM, organic matter protein, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber digestion than those on control or TMR (p < 0.05). Rumen pH values for all treatments ranged from 6.68 to 6.73, with no significant differences. Growing lambs fed FTMR had greater rumen total volatile fatty acid and propionic acid concentrations than those given TMR and the control (p < 0.05). Protozoa were not different across the FTMR groups, although total bacterial and fungal zoospores were increased. In addition, when lambs were fed FTMR containing cassava pulp, ruminal microbial protein syn¬thesis was significantly increased. Conclusion: It could indicate that feeding growing lambs with FTMR could improve nutrient utili¬zation, ruminal fermentation, and microbial protein synthesis. However, studies on the effects of FTMR on sheep performance, meat quality, and milk quality are necessary.
Effect of urea and molasses fermented cassava pulp on rumen fermentation, microbial population and microbial protein synthesis in beef cattle

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of fermented cassava pulp with urea and molasses on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation and microbial protein synthesis. All brahman crossbred beef cattle were randomly assigned according to a 4 × 4 Latin Square Design to receive four dietary treatments; cassava pulp (control), cassava pulp fermented with urea 4%, cassava pulp fermented with molasses 4%, and cassava pulp fermented with urea 4% and molasses 4%. All animals were fed concentrate pellet at 1.5% BW and supplemented 0.5% BW of cassava pulp. The results showed that rumen NH3-N concentration was increased in cattle fed with both cassava pulp fermented with urea and/or molasses (P < 0.05). The total VFA was not affected by dietary treatments while there was an increase in propionic acid when cattle were supplemented with fermented cassava pulp. However, methane production and protozoal population were lower in treatments with fermented cassava pulp (P < 0.05). Feeding of fermented cassava pulp resulted in an increase in microbial protein synthesis (P < 0.05). Based on the present findings, it could be concluded that fermented cassava pulp with urea and molasses can increase propionic acid, microbial protein synthesis while reducing protozoal population and CH4 production.

Abstract:The quantity and quality of animal feed are important factors for efficient and profitable animal farming. Feed ingredients and supplementation with high-density energy and nitrogen would be potentially useful on the farm. The new approach to feeding has shifted from animal-based diets to more readily fermentable feedstuffs in ruminants to meet the increased production of high-yielding animals. These methods encourage the use of fermented total mixed ration (FTMR). An advantage of feeding FTMR as opposed to total mixed ration (TMR) is the opportunity for a development alternative to efficiently handle ruminant diets. FTMR is a method to promote progressive nutrient utilization, extend the preservation of feed by preventing spoilage, and reduce anti-nutritive substances in feeds. Ruminal protein and starch degradability were increased due to proteolysis during storage by ruminants fed ensiled rations. The results found that FTMR can reduce the pH level and increase the lactic acid content of ensiled materials, which results in better quality feed and longer storage times. In addition, it can increase dry matter intake, growth rate, and milk production when compared with TMR. It was shown that the use of FTMR diet was effective for animal production. However, FTMR was rapidly spoiled when exposed to air or feed-out, particularly in hot and humid climates, resulting in a decrease in lactic acid concentration, an increase in pH, and the loss of nutrients. Thus, the appropriate method for enhancing the quality of FTMR should be considered.

Methane Production, Fermentation Characteristics, and Microbial Profiles in the Rumen of Tropical Cattle Fed Tea Seed Saponin Supplementation

Abstract:Belmont Red Composite rumen-cannulated steers (n = 8, 364 +/- 8.4 kg liveweight, LW; least squares means +/- s.e.m.) were used to assess effects of feeding tea seed (Camellia sinensis L.) saponin (TSS) supplementation on performance, methanogenesis, fermentation pattern and rumen microbial communities. The expectation was to use TSS to potentially modulate the rumen microbial population and decrease enteric methane (CH4) production. The steers were fed twice a day with a basal diet (BD) that contained a mixture of 0.15 Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) hay plus 0.85 of a commercial concentrate before CH4 emissions were measured in open-circuit respiratory chambers for 48 h. Steers were then adapted progressively to doses of 20 and 30 g/day of TSS for 10 and 6 days, respectively before new CH4 measurements were recorded. Final placement in chambers was conducted after 13 days of TSS removal (BDP). Rumen fluid samples from each steer were collected for the treatments BD, BD + 20 g TSS, BD + 30 g TSS and BDP. Growth performance and CH4 emissions were not affected by the addition of TSS, but compared to the BD and TSS diets, daily CH4 emissions (g) and yield (gCH(4)/kg DMI) were lower (P < 0.05) by 18 and 22%, respectively, after TSS treatment. Concentrations of total volatile fatty acids, acetate and propionate were not affected by TSS treatment, as were total rumen bacteria and methanogens numbers. Relative to the BD and BDP, butyrate concentration was higher (P < 0.05) in TSS treated animals, resulting in a reduced ratio of acetate to butyric acid (P < 0.05). In comparison with BD control, the relative abundance of Fibrobacter succinogenes increased by 2 fold (P < 0.001) in the other three dietary groups. However, compared to the BD and BD + 20 g of TSS, the abundance of R. albus increased by 100 fold (P < 0.01) in the BD + 30 g of TSS and BDP diets, while the abundance of R. flavefaciens was 100 fold lower in TSS supplemented and BDP groups than in BD control group (P < 0.001). Thermoplasmatales-related RCC archaea and protozoa counts increased linearly with 20 and 30 g of TSS addition, but returned to BD control levels after the TSS supplement was withdrawn. It was concluded that TSS supplementation changed rumen microbial community in cattle, but was not inhibitory to methane production, which was inconsistent with published in vitro results and small ruminant trials where TSS caused a dose-dependent reduction in CH4 emissions. Effects of Supplementary Chinese Milk Vetch Silage and Rapeseed Meal on the Performance and Rumen Fermentation of Lambs Given Ammoniated Rice Straw Based Diet

Abstract:This study was proposed to investigate effects of inclusion of Chinese milk vetch silage (MVS) and rapeseed meal (RSM) on the growth and rumen fermentation of Hu-sheep. Fifty weanling lambs were randomly divided into five equal groups and offered ammoniated rice straw (ABRS) ad libitum along with 100 g concentrate (Trial 1). The animals in T-0 T-1, T-2, T-3 and T-4 group were respectively supplemented with MVS at levels of 0, 0, 7, 14 or 21% and with RSM at levels of 0, 15, 10, 5 or 0%. Daily gain of lambs was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in T-1, T-2 and T-3 group than that in T-0 and T-4 group. Feed conversion ratio was greatly reduced in supplemented groups as compared with T-0 group. In Trial 2, five sheep with rumen cannulae were used in a 5x5 Latin square design. The experimental treatments were as described in Trial 1, but without concentrate. The intake of ABRS was significantly (p < 0.05) lower in T-4 group than that in T-0 group, and also significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those in T-1 and T-2 group. Little difference among all treatments was found in 48h DM degradability of ABRS, MVS and RSM, and in nunen pH value and microbial protein concentration. Rumen concentrations of individual and total VFA tended to be higher in supplemented groups than those in T-0 group. These results suggest that supplementation with RSM or RSM plus MVS can effectively improve the performance of lambs, and may fail to influence markedly the numen digestion of ABRS and rumen environments.
Diet Type Impacts Production Performance of Fattening Lambs by Manipulating the Ruminal Microbiota and Metabolome

Abstract:The pelleted total mixed ration (PTMR) has a positive effect on the productivity of fattening lambs. However, whether the beneficial effects are underpinned by altering the rumen microbiota and metabolome that remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate correlations among growth performance, ruminal microbiota, and ruminal metabolome of lambs fed PTMR diet. A total of 100 crossbred (Dorper sheep × Fine-wool sheep) ram lambs at 55 days of age with similar body weight (BW) (13.2 ± 0.5 kg) were randomly allocated to 10 pens that were fed either PTMR (PTMR group) or unpelleted total mixed ration (UPTMR group) with the same dietary ingredients and nutritional contents. The average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were determined during the 62-day experimental period and ruminal pH, volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, microbiota, and metabolome in the rumen of the lambs were examined at the end of the experiment. Compared to those of the UPTMR group, the PTMR group had greater ADFI ( P = 0.002), ADG ( P = 0.003), and feed efficiency (G/F) ( P < 0.05). Similarly, feeding PTMR increased the concentration of total VFA (TVFA) and the molar proportion of propionate, but decreased the proportion of butyrate and acetate to propionate ratio in the rumen of lambs compared to that in lambs from the UPTMR group ( P < 0.05). In addition, the PTMR group demonstrated lowered alpha-diversity of the ruminal microbiota and enhanced the relative abundance of Fibrobacter ( P < 0.05), Veillonellaceae ( P < 0.05), and the abundance of Rikenellaceae ( P = 0.064) in the rumen compared with those in the UPTMR group. Feeding lambs with PTMR significantly upregulated the metabolic pathways involving tryptophan, histidine, cysteine and methionine, β-alanine, tyrosine metabolisms, and steroid biosynthesis. Moreover, the abundance of the microbiota strongly correlated with the altered performance, ruminal VFA, metabolites, and metabolic pathways of lambs. Taken together, feeding PTMR shaped the ruminal microbiota of lambs with decreased diversity, while improving relative abundance of some specific microbes and upregulating certain growth-related metabolic pathways, which contributed to the augmented growth performance and G/F of fattening lambs. Thus, feeding PTMR to fattening lambs for superior production performance and G/F is recommended.

Effects of tea seed saponin supplementation on physiological changes associated with blood methane concentration in tropical Brahman cattle

Abstract:A 59-day experiment compared the effects of increasing tea seed (Camellia sinensis L.) saponin (TSS) supplementation on dry matter intake (DMI), liveweight (LW), rumen fermentation, methanogenesis, blood biochemistry and animal tolerance. Six, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 g of powder TSS were dissolved during 5, 7, 4, 3, 3 and 2 days, respectively, and infused into the rumen of four rumen-cannulated Brahman steers (234 +/- 13.6 kg LW; least-squares means +/- s.e.m.) or mixed in the basal diet [BD: 0.15 Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) hay plus a high-grain feed (0.85)] of two non-cannulated (253 +/- 19.3 kg) steers. Overall, DMI was not affected, by the sequential infusion of TSS (5.3 +/- 0.15 kg) or addition to the BD (5.4 +/- 0.18 kg), but relative to all diets, 6 g of TSS supplementation reduced DMI (P < 0.05), while the administration above 30 g of the supplement was associated with significantly (P < 0.001) reduced DMI, scours and bloat disorders. Clinical symptoms disappeared 8 days after withdrawal of the supplement. LW increased with time (P < 0.05) and the final LW was similar for cannulated (258 +/- 13.6 kg) and non-cannulated (276 +/- 19.3 kg) steers. Saponin supplementation reduced total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration (P < 0.05), modified pattern of individual molar VFA concentrations and moderately increased ruminal pH (P < 0.05). Cannulated and non-cannulated steers fed the BD had similar daily (g) methane or yield (CH4 g/kg DMI) emissions while in respiratory chambers. However, compared with cannulated (8.0 +/- 1.20 ng/mL) animals, the addition of 30 g of TSS in the BD increased (P < 0.01) blood CH4 concentration in non-cannulated (15.6 +/- 1.74 ng/mL) animals. Diets supplemented with 30 g of TSS were associated with higher chloride (P < 0.01) and alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.05) blood concentrations, and lower serum concentrations of potassium and urea nitrogen (P < 0.01), iron and total lipase (P < 0.05), than was the BD. It was concluded that higher levels of TSS supplement may evoke physiological changes in the animal. However, the potential CH4 mitigation effect of this form of saponin in tropical cattle needs further investigation, alongside the derived response of the rumen microbial ecology to the tested range of supplementation.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of adding different levels of the combination of fibrolytic enzymes and probiotics (a mixture of bacteria and yeast) on the performance of fattening lambs. Thirty-two male Ossimi lambs (weighing 39 ± 0.24 kg) were divided into four groups randomly (eight animals each). The first group (control ration, G1) was fed on a ration of 60% concentrate feed mixture (CFM), 20% Egyptian clover (EC), and 20% wheat straw (WS). The second (G2), third (G3), and fourth (G4) groups were fed a control ration supplemented with Calfo Care® at concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 2 kg/ton diet of dry matter (DM). Results showed that the G2 and G3 rations significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the DM, organic matter, crude protein, crude fiber, and ether extract digestibility compared with the G1 and G4 rations. Moreover, the G2 and G3 rations increased (p ≤ 0.05) the percentages of total digestible nutrients (TDN), starch values (SV), and digestible crude protein (DCP) compared with the G1 and G4 rations. Both the G2 and G3 rations significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the TDN, SV, and DCP as kg/day or g/kg w0.75 and kg or g/100 kg body weight compared with the G1 and G4 rations. Conversely, the G1 ration significantly decreased the feed conversion of DM, TDN, SV, and DCP compared with the experimental groups. Furthermore, the G2, G3, and G4 rations significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the total weight gain by 25.34%, 52.20%, and 3.79%, respectively, compared with the G1 ration. The G2, G3, and G4 rations also (p ≤ 0.05) increased the concentrations of most hematological parameters, including triiodothyronine, total protein, albumin, and glucose, compared with the G1 ration. Finally, the best net profit was recorded with the G3 ration, followed by the G2, G4, and G1 rations.

Effects of different amylose to amylopectin ratios on rumen fermentation and development in fattening lambs

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of different amylose/amylopectin ratios on rumen fermentation and development of fattening lambs.METHODS: Forty-eight 7-day-old male Small-tailed Han sheep×Northeast fine wool sheep were randomly assigned to four treatments of dietary amylose/amylopectin ratios (0.12, 0.23, 0.24, and 0.48 in tapioca starch, corn starch, wheat starch and pea starch diets, respectively). Three lambs from each treatment were slaughtered at 21, 35, 56, and 77 days of age to determine the rumen fermentation and development.RESULTS: Compared with tapioca starch diet, the pea starch diet significantly increased the concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the ruminal fluid of lambs but significantly decreased the bacterial protein content. At 56 and 77 d, the rumen propionate concentration tended to be greatest in the tapioca starch group than in other groups. The rumen butyrate concentration was the greatest in lambs fed on pea starch compared with those fed on other starch diets. Furthermore, the pea starch diet significantly stimulated rumen development by increasing the papillae height, width and surface area in the rumen ventral or dorsal locations in lambs. However, different amylose/amylopectin ratios diets did not significantly affect the feed intake, body weight, average daily gain, the relative weight and capacity of the rumen in lambs with increasing length of trial periods.CONCLUSION: Lambs early supplemented with a high amylose/amylopectin ratio diet had favourable morphological development of rumen epithelium, which was not conducive to bacterial protein synthesis.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the effect of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with fermented cassava pulp by Saccharomyces cerevisiae (FCSC) in the diet of growing goats. Growing goats were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments according to replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design. Dietary treatments were five levels of replacement SBM to FCSC at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of crude protein in concentrates. The results showed that total dry matter intake (DMI, g/day) was increased (P < 0.05) with increasing FCSC. The highest for body weight change was found in 75% replacement of SBM by FCSC. The results suggested that FCSC could replace up to 75% of SBM in concentrate of growing goats fed rice straw as roughage. Based on this result, using 75% FCSC as the main source of protein to completely replace soybean meal was beneficial to growing goats in terms of feed intake and productive performance.

Abstract:The effects of rice straw silage with combined additives (RSSA) of Lactobacillus plantarum, Trichoderma viride and wheat bran on growth performance, digestibility and rumen fermentation in growing lambs were investigated. Twelve growing lambs with initial body weight (BW ± SD) of 12.8 ± 0.4 kg were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups. These lambs were fed with rice straw silage (25%, on the dry matter intake (DMI) without additives (RSSW) and 25% RSSA supplementation respectively. The growth performance, nutrients digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters of growing lambs were determined. The results of this study showed that the average daily gain (ADG) and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly increased by the RSSA supplementation as compared to the RSSW supplementation (P gt 0.05). The apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), as well as neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was significantly increased by RSSA supplementation (Pandlt;05). Moreover, the microbial crude protein (MCP), total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), acetate, butyrate and valeric acid concentrations in rumen fluid were significantly enhanced by the RSSA supplementation (P0andlt;05). In conclusion, rice straw silage with L. plantarum, T. viride and wheat bran can enhance the overall growth performance, rumen fermentation and apparent digestibility of nutrients in the growing lambs.

Abstract:Whole corn plants at stage of maturity were treated by adding microbial inoculants or formic acid at ensiling to determine the effect of these additives (lactic acid bacterial inoculants (LAB) or formic acid) on the fermentation during ensiling. Nutrients digestion coefficients, nitrogen balance, rumen function and DM,CF degradability of sheep fed rations containing untreated or treated silage. Feed intake, milk production and milk composition of crossbred Friesian cows fed treated or un-treated silage plus 6kg CFM were also studied. The results of silage quality indicated that formic acid silage had lower (P<0.05) value of pH, ammonia nitrogen, total VFA and lactic acid than inoculanted silage and untreated silage. The results of the chemical and physical characteristics indicated a good quality for the untreated or treated silages. Nine Barki meal sheep used in digestibility experiment were assigned into 3 similar groups of 3 each. Animals were fed one of experimental rations R1, R2 or control, which containing inoculanted silage, formic acid treated silage or un-treated silage respectively. The results showed insignificant differences (P<0.05) in digestibility of DM and OM among experimental rations. Highest (P<0.05) CP digestibility and NB observed with ration containing formic acid silage. Moreover all animals fed experimental rations showed positive NB. While, highest (P<0.05) CF digestibility was recorded for the ration containing inoculanted silage. However, nutritive value were significantly (P<0.05) higher with R1and R2 than control. Rumen fermentation and in-situ trails determined using three cannulated female Barki sheep. The main results showed that NH3-N concentration was higher for sheep given the control ration following R1. While, highest (P<0.05) TVFA'S was recorded for sheep fed R1and R2 compared to those fed control ration. On the other hand, microbial protein synthesis was lowest (P<0.05) for sheep fed R1 and R2 than those fed ration containing un-treated silage which recorded highest value. Dry matter and CF degradability showed significant (P<0.05) increased for rations containing inoculants silage than control ration. Ration containing formic acid silage showed intermediate value. Feed intake, milk yield and milk composition were significantly increased for cows fed inoculants silage and formic acid silage. Also, these silage additives showed improved in Net revenue and Economic Efficiency%. These results introduce a novel technique towards making best use of agricultural residues as a compensatory feed for feeding ruminants and minimize such problems of disposal pollution.

Abstract:Abstract Four sheep (live weight 39 to 42 kg) fitted with rumen cannulas were offered ammonia-treated barley straw alone (control) or supplemented with unmolassed sugar-beet pulp or rolled barley at 0·20 or 0·40 of the total diet on a fresh weight basis (SBP20, SBP40, B20 and B40, respectively) using a 4 × 5 randomized block design. Total diet intakes were 710, 873, 1054, 843 and 1021 g dry matter per day for control, SBP20, SBP40, B20 and B40 respectively. The intake of straw was depressed significantly with SBP40 and B40 ( P < 0·05). Rumen pH and ammonia concentration decreased, and total volatile fatty acid concentrations increased ( P < 0·05) with increasing level of supplementation for both supplements. Rumen liquid outflow rate was affected little by the supplementation although this measurement for B40 was significantly higher than that for the other treatments. Microbial protein supply, estimated from urinary excretion of purine derivatives, increased significantly with the increasing amounts of supplements (4·5, 6·7, 8·5, 7·1 and 9·0 (s.e.d. 0·73) g N per day for control, SBP20, SBP40, B20 and B40 respectively) ( P < 0·05). The calculated efficiency of microbial protein production was 12·8, 14·2, 14·3, 15·7 and 14·5 (s.e.d. 1·45) g N per kg digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) for the five treatments. Although this value was lowest with the control, differences between treatments were not significant ( P > 0·05). It seems that microbial protein yield per unit DOMI for a diet based on ammonia-treated straw could not be improved substantially by supplementation with sugar-beet pulp or barley.
Self-Assembled Dextrin Nanogel as Curcumin Delivery System

Abstract:Curcumin is a natural polyphenol with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Its therapeutic potential is substantially hindered by the rather low water solubility and bioavailability, hence the need for suitable carriers. In this study, we show that self-assembled nanogels obtained from hydrophobically modified dextrin are effective curcumin nanocarriers. The stability and loading efficiency of curcumin-loaded nanogel depends on the nanogel/curcumin ratio. Higher stability of the formulation is achieved in water than in PBS buffer, as evaluated by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence measurements. The in vitro release profile, using sink conditions, indicates that dextrin nanogel may perform as a suitable carrier for the controlled release of curcumin. Biological activity of curcumin-loaded nanogel in HeLa cell cultures was assessed using the MTS assay.
Effects of Tea Saponin Supplementation on Nutrient Digestibility, Methanogenesis, and Ruminal Microbial Flora in Dorper Crossbred Ewe

Abstract:Two experiments were conducted using Dorper × thin-tailed Han crossbred ewes. In experiment 1, eighteen ewes were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments (a basal diet, or the same basal diet supplemented with 2.0 g tea saponin (TS)/head/day) to investigate the effects of TS supplementation on nutrient digestibility and methane emissions. In experiment 2, six ewes with ruminal cannulae were assigned to the same two dietary treatments as in experiment 1 to investigate the effects of TS supplementation on rumen fermentation and microbial flora. TS supplementation increased the apparent digestibility of organic matter (OM) (p = 0.001), nitrogen (N) (p = 0.036), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (p = 0.001), and acid detergent fibre (ADF) (p < 0.001). Urinary N (p = 0.001) and fecal N (p = 0.036) output were reduced, and N retention (p = 0.001) and nitrogen retention/nitrogen intake (p = 0.001) were increased. Supplementary TS did not decrease absolute methane emissions (p = 0.519) but decreased methane emissions scaled to metabolic bodyweight by 8.80% (p = 0.006). Ammonia levels decreased (p < 0.001) and total volatile fatty acid levels increased (p = 0.018) in response to TS supplementation. The molar proportion of propionate increased (p = 0.007), whereas the acetate:propionate ratio decreased (p = 0.035). Supplementation with TS increased the population of Fibrobacter succinogenes (p = 0.019), but the population of protozoans tended to decrease (p = 0.054). Supplementation with TS effectively enhanced the apparent digestibility of OM, N, NDF, and ADF, and decreased methane emissions scaled to metabolic bodyweight.

Abstract:The principle of the study was to assess the influence of yeast-fermented cassava pulp (YFCP) as a protein supplement on feed intake, nutrient digestibilities, rumen microbial protein synthesis, fermentation end-products, and N-balance in Thai native beef cattle. The experiment was conducted following the 4 × 4 Latin square design using 4 levels of YFCP supplementation (0, 100, 200, and 300 g/head/day) in 3-year-old Thai native beef cattle crossbreds. The response of YFCP supplementation level using rice straw as a roughage source revealed promising results. The rumen ecology parameters including cellulolytic, amylolytic, and proteolytic bacterial population were significantly increased while the protozoal population were reduced, as affected by increasing level of YFCP supplementation (P < 0.05). In parallel with these results, totals VFA, propionate (C3) production in the rumen, and the ratio of C2:C3 were remarkably increased (P < 0.01), while rumen methane production by prediction from VFA was decreased (P < 0.01), as YFCP supplementation increased. Regarding, the nutrient digestibilities, those of OM and CP were remarkably enhanced (P < 0.01), hence increased DM intake. Furthermore, the use of YFCP at high level resulted in the highest N-balance and N retention absorption (P < 0.01). The results indicated that YFCP can be nutritionally enhanced by yeast fermentation, thus is promising to be used as a protein source in ruminant feeding.

Abstract:The present study evaluated the effect of the inclusion of cassava fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts on performance, feed intake, nutrient digestibility, rumen microorganisms and ruminal fermentation of cattle through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The effects of yeast-fermented cassava (YFC) in the diet of cattle were evaluated using the mean difference as a measure of the effect size, considering a confidence interval of 95%. Subgroup and meta-regression analysis were performed to investigate the origin of heterogeneity. The database included eight experiments. Three studies were related to dairy heifers, three related to dairy cow and the remaining two studies were associated to beef heifers. The inclusion of YFC in the bovine diet increased the dry matter intake %BW ( P < 0.01) and nutrient digestibility ( P < 0.05). We observed an increase in mean ruminal pH ( P < 0.01), volatile fatty acid ( P < 0.01) and propionic acid concentration ( P < 0.01). There was a significant increase in the population of bacteria ( P < 0.01) and fungi ( P < 0.01), and a reduction in the protozoan count in the rumen fluid ( P < 0.01) in the animals fed with YFC. Lactating cows fed YFC produced 1.02 kg/day more ( P < 0.01) milk than non-supplemented cows. In addition, there was an increase of 7.4% in the fat ( P = 0.03), 6.3% in the protein ( P < 0.01) and 2.8% in lactose ( P = 0.02) of milk of cows supplemented with YFC. The results of the present meta-analysis showed that the total or partial inclusion of YFC in cattle concentrate improves fermentation and rumen efficiency, dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility, milk yield, and milk composition.

Abstract:Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) is widely ensiled to feed sheep in southwestern China, as unconventional woody forage. Feeding lambs with paper mulberry silage (PMS) may improve certain feeding characteristics, thereby affecting the growth performance and meat quality. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of four diets of PMS on growth performance, rumen microbial composition, and muscle fatty acids profile in Hu lambs. The results showed that 30% and 40% PMS increased the dry matter intake and average daily gain of Hu lambs compared to the control group. PMS30 and PMS40 increased the content of C24:1, and PMS40 increased the content of C20:5n-3. The content of microbial protein (MCP) was higher in PMS40 than in others, but PMS30 and PMS40 reduced the total volatile fatty acid in rumen. PMS30 significantly increased the ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid. The abundance of ruminal Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and norank_f_Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group was significantly higher in PMS30 and PMS40 groups. Moreover, Christensenellaceae_R-7_group had a significant positive correlation with n3-polyunsaturated fatty acid. PMS40 might lead to a relatively high content of unsaturated fatty acids in longissimus dorsi muscle by increasing the relative abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group in rumen.
