Abstract:Hylurgus ligniperda invaded Shandong, China, through imported forest timber, posing a threat to China's forest health. Exotic insects with broad environmental tolerance, including low temperatures, may have a better chance of surviving the winters and becoming invasive. Understanding the cold-tolerance strategies of H. ligniperda may help to design sustainable pest management approaches. In this study, we aim to investigate the cold-tolerance ability and relevant physiological indicators in overwintering H. ligniperda adults to determine any possible overwintering strategies. Supercooling points (SCPs) for adults H. ligniperda differed significantly across months and reached the lowest level in the mid- and post-overwintering period, the minimum SCPs -6.45 ± 0.18 °C. As the cold exposure temperature decreased, the survival rate of adults gradually decreased, and no adult survived more than 1 day at -15 °C, and the LLT50 for 1 day was -7.1 °C. Since H. ligniperda adults can survive internal ice formation, they are freeze-tolerant insects. Throughout the overwintering period, the SCPs and the water, protein, sorbitol, and glycerol content in adults decreased initially and then increased. We reported significant correlations between total protein, sorbitol, trehalose, and glycerol content in the beetles and SCPs. Glycogen, lipid, protein, trehalose, and sorbitol content in adult beetles may directly affect their cold-tolerance capacity and survival during winter. This study provides a physiological and biochemical basis for further study of metabolism and cold-tolerance strategies in H. ligniperda adults, which may help predict population dynamics and distribution potential of pests.

Abstract:Abstract The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda , is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of the American continent and is one of the world's most destructive insect pests and invaded Africa and spread to most of Asia in two years. Glycerol is generally used as a cryoprotectant for overwintering insects in cold areas. In many studies, the increase in glycerol as a main rapid cold hardening (RCH) factor and enhancing the supercooling point was revealed at low temperatures. There are two genes, including glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) and glycerol kinase (GK), that were identified as being associated with the glycerol synthesis pathway. In this study, one GPDH and two GK sequences (GK1 and GK2) were extracted from FAW transcriptome analysis. RNA interference (RNAi) specific to GPDH or GK1 and GK2 exhibited a significant down-regulation at the mRNA level as well as a reduction in survival rate when the RNAi-treated of FAW larvae post a RCH treatment. Following a cold period, an increase in glycerol accumulation was detected utilizing high-pressure liquid chromatography and colorimetric analysis of glycerol quantity in RCH treated hemolymph of FAW larvae. This research suggests that GPDH and GK isozymes are linked to the production of a high quantity of glycerol as an RCH factor, and glycerol as main cryoprotectant plays an important role in survival throughout the cold period in this quarantine pest studied.

Cold tolerance of the drosophila pupal parasitoid Trichopria drosophilae

Abstract:Trichopria drosophilae (Perkins) (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae) is a pupal parasitoid of drosophila flies recorded from several parts of the world. It is currently considered for augmentative biological programs to control the severe agricultural pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Since D. suzukii has invaded regions that experience zero and sub-zero winter temperatures, cold tolerance of the parasitoid is an important aspect to consider. We characterized low temperature tolerance and overwintering capacity of a colony of T. drosophilae collected in Northern Switzerland. We used copper-constantan thermocouples to determine the supercooling point and pre-freeze mortality. Moreover, we subjected honey-fed and unfed adult T. drosophilae as well as developing stages within their drosophila host to short- and long-term acclimation conditions and assessed the duration of their survival at low temperatures. Finally, we exposed adult and sub-adult stages to winter conditions in a semi-field experiment and evaluated their survival. We found that T. drosophilae is chill susceptible like D. suzukii, but adults froze and survived at colder temperatures than those reported for D. suzukii. Adult parasitoids could tolerate several days of exposure to sub-zero temperatures and could reproduce afterwards, whereas sub-adult stages could survive longer periods under these conditions. The provision of honey and water enhanced the survival of adults and long-term acclimation led to longer survival in all stages. The semi-field experiment supported the results of the laboratory tests. Based on these results we suggest that in Central Europe, T. drosophilae survives winters mainly in developing stages but adults are likely able to tolerate short periods of low spring temperatures.

Abstract:The leafminer Liriomyza trifolii causes severe economic damage on ornamental and horticultural crops in China. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) is a phenomenon where cold tolerance in insects can be significantly enhanced after a short-term acclimation to low temperatures. In this study, the regulation of transcription in response to cold hardening was investigated in L. trifolii adults, and fatty acids and cryoprotectant levels were measured. The composition of fatty acids changed after RCH treatment, and glucose and trehalose levels showed significant accumulation after acclimation, thus indicating that changes in fatty acids and cryoprotectants contribute to RCH in L. trifolii. RNA-seq was used to analyze transcriptional regulation after a 4 h hardening period and showed that differentially expressed genes clustered in multiple metabolic pathways, which indicates the importance of transcriptional regulation in RCH. This study expands our knowledge of biochemical and transcriptional changes in L. trifolii during cold hardening and provides a basis for further investigations aimed at understanding thermal adaptation in insects.

DNA Replication Dynamics of the GGGGCC Repeat of the C9orf72 Gene*

Abstract:Background: The (GGGGCC)n hexanucleotide repeat expansion of C9orf72 is the most common genetic cause of ALS-FTD. Results: C9orf72 repeat expansion increases instability and decreases replication efficiency by disrupting replication fork progression. Conclusion: C9orf72 repeat length and replication direction contribute to repeat instability in human cells. Significance: DNA replication-induced instability at the C9orf72 GGGGCC repeat can lead to further expansion and more severe disease. DNA has the ability to form a variety of secondary structures in addition to the normal B-form DNA, including hairpins and quadruplexes. These structures are implicated in a number of neurological diseases and cancer. Expansion of a GGGGCC repeat located at C9orf72 is associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. This repeat expands from two to 24 copies in normal individuals to several hundreds or thousands of repeats in individuals with the disease. Biochemical studies have demonstrated that as little as four repeats have the ability to form a stable DNA secondary structure known as a G-quadruplex. Quadruplex structures have the ability to disrupt normal DNA processes such as DNA replication and transcription. Here we examine the role of GGGGCC repeat length and orientation on DNA replication using an SV40 replication system in human cells. Replication through GGGGCC repeats leads to a decrease in overall replication efficiency and an increase in instability in a length-dependent manner. Both repeat expansions and contractions are observed, and replication orientation is found to influence the propensity for expansions or contractions. The presence of replication stress, such as low-dose aphidicolin, diminishes replication efficiency but has no effect on instability. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis demonstrates a replication stall with as few as 20 GGGGCC repeats. These results suggest that replication of the GGGGCC repeat at C9orf72 is perturbed by the presence of expanded repeats, which has the potential to result in further expansion, leading to disease.
A long cold storage protocol for Anisopteromalus calandrae based on promoting prepupal development and arresting early pupal growth under low temperature

Abstract:Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) shows great promise as an ectoparasitoid for controlling various coleopteran pests in warehouses. However, for a large-scale release, it is crucial to establish an ample supply of A. calandrae while carefully maintaining their quality and effectiveness. Appropriate cold storage techniques are the key to achieving these goals. Previous studies on cold storage have focused on specific developmental stages and explored cold storage conditions that can be applied only to those stages. Herein, we examined the development, survival and reproductive capacity of A. calandrae at different temperatures (13, 16, and 19 °C) and storage durations (30, 60, and 90 d) and evaluated the fitness of the offspring. A. calandrae completed its egg-to-larva development and pupated at 16 °C, but its development was arrested at an early pupal stage. Even after 90 d of cold storage at 16 °C, the survival rate of A. calandrae remained high at 77%, with no significant impact on reproductive capacity. Furthermore, cold storage showed no negative effect on the F1 generation. In contrast, eggs stored at 13 °C failed to hatch, whereas those stored at 19 °C developed. Adults emerged after > 60 d. This indicates that storage at 19 °C is only suitable for short durations. Our findings highlight the developmental pattern of A. calandrae at 16 °C, indicating that the parasitic wasp can be stored for a long time at this temperature across all stages of development before pupation, substantially facilitating its mass reproduction and industrial production.
Expanded Supercooling Capacity With No Cryoprotectant Accumulation Underlies Cold Tolerance of the European Grapevine Moth

Abstract:Abstract The European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis et Schiffermuller), is a serious invasive pest that causes significant losses to the flowers and fruits of grapes in most of the world. This multivoltine pest passes the winter as the third-generation diapausing pupa. The current study was designed to compare nondiapausing (first and second generations) and diapausing pupae (third generation) and to investigate the relationship among cold tolerance, the supercooling point (SCP), and diapause development of the third-generation diapausing pupae. The lethal temperatures (LTs) for the three generations were determined using 24-h exposure at subzero temperatures. The mean SCP of the pupae was estimated at approx. −22.6°C, the lowest level of which (−23.7°C) was recorded in the well-developed diapausing pupae in February. The highest level of cold tolerance was also recorded in February. There were no significant differences among the temperatures required to kill 30, 50, and 90% of the pupae. The temperatures significantly decreased from October onward and reached the lowest levels in February during which the lowest SCP and the highest cold tolerance were observed in the diapausing pupae. No significant differences were found in the cryoprotectant levels, among the diapausing and nondiapausing pupae, and the diapause development. The highest activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) was recorded in the late diapause in February. The findings suggested a relationship among SCP depression, cold tolerance enhancement, and diapause development. A bimodal cold-tolerance strategy (freeze-intolerant and freeze-tolerant) was found to be a feature of the pupae.

Magnetic resonance imaging of thymic epithelial tumors.

Abstract:The authors review their experience with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thymus and discuss the appearance of thymic epithelial tumors where MRI is clinically useful. Detailed descriptions of MRI findings in benign thymomas, invasive thymomas, and thymic carcinomas are provided. Most benign (noninvasive) thymomas appear with a slightly higher signal intensity than that of muscle on T1-weighted images. On T2-weighted images, thymomas have an increase in signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. Neither fibrous septa nor lobulated internal architecture can be detected on MRI. Gd-DTPA-enhanced MR images show homogeneous enhancement. On the other hand, invasive thymomas show the same signal intensity as benign thymomas, both on T1- and T2-weighted images. However, invasive thymomas appear inhomogeneous in signal intensity on T2-weighted images. T2-weighted images also show a lobulated border, fibrous septa, and lobulated internal architecture, characteristic of most invasive thymomas. Irregularity of tumor margins indicating invasion into surrounding structures is noted in some cases of invasive thymomas. Exceptionally minute thymomas (< 1 cm in diameter) show a different signal intensity on MRI as compared to those of usual thymomas: both T1- and T2-weighted MR images show a low signal intensity mass with irregular or unclear borders. Histopathologically, these minute thymomas contain numerous tiny cysts and/or abundant collagenous tissues. Generally, thymic carcinomas, except carcinoid tumors, appear with a relatively low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted MR images in comparison to those of thymomas. In particular, well-differentiated squamous cell carcinomas appear with a low signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. Abundant collagenous tissue may be a causative factor for the low signal intensity on T2-weighted MR images. Thymic carcinomas appear slightly inhomogeneous on both T1- and T2-weighted images. Neither fibrous septa nor lobulated internal architecture can be detected in any thymic carcinoma. If MRI is performed on a patient with anterior mediastinal tumors, thymic carcinoma may be precisely diagnosed when characteristic MR findings are demonstrated.
Optimal cold storage protocol for Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), a biological control agent for coleopteran pests in stored products

Abstract:Background: Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) is a solitary ectoparasitoid with wide-ranging potential applications as a natural biological control agent against various coleopterous pests in food warehouses. Implementing an effective cold storage program is crucial for extending the shelf life of biological control agents and ensuring their stable and abundant supply. Herein, we attempted to determine the optimal cold storage conditions for Anisopteromalus calandrae by investigating the effect of cold storage at three different temperatures (7, 13, and 19 °C) for 7, 21, and 35 days on four developmental stages (late-instar larvae, early-stage pupae, mid-stage pupae, and 2-day-old adults). Additionally, we explored the maximum cold storage potential by observing early-stage pupae stored at 13 °C for various durations (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 days). Results: The most suitable cold storage temperature for the early-stage pupae of Anisopteromalus calandrae was 13 °C, and the highest adult emergence rate (98.3%) was after 90 days of storage at 13 °C. Furthermore, we did not find any significant effect on longevity (female: 44.3 days; male: 38.1 days) or fecundity (121.7 wasps). The female ratio ranged from 43.5% to 50.8%. More importantly, cold storage did not adversely affect the developmental duration or fecundity of the offspring. Conclusion: This study offers crucial insights for managing Anisopteromalus calandrae populations under laboratory conditions and lays the foundation for potential industrial production and development. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
Supercooling Capacity and Cold Hardiness of the Adults of the Sycamore Lace Bug, Corythucha Ciliata (Hemiptera:Tingidae).

Abstract:Supercooling point (SCP) of female adults of Corythucha ciliata was significantly lower than that of male adults, with an average being -11.49 degrees C and -9.54 degrees C, respectively. Low temperature survival of adults of different ages indicated that there were differences in cold survival ability among age groups of adults. Nonlinear regression analysis found that the response of C. ciliata adults to exposure time under different low temperature regimes (above -5 degrees C) was best fitted by a logistic equation. Both low temperature and exposure time had significant effects on mortality of adults. Temperatures above 5 degrees C did not prevent C. ciliata adults from surviving. C. ciliata was shown to be a freeze-intolerant but chill-tolerant insect. C. ciliata could tolerate subzero temperatures by supercooling. Temperature around -8 degres C is a critical point for successful overwintering of C. ciliata adults, which can establish in the whole areas where Platanus trees are planted in China.

Abstract:Ambient thermal conditions mediate insect growth, development, reproduction, survival, and distribution. With increasingly frequent and severe cold spells, it is critical to determine low-temperature performance and cold tolerances of ecologically and economically essential insect groups to predict their responses to global environmental change. This review covers the cold tolerance strategies of 49 species of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), focusing on species that are known as crop pests and crop storage facilities. We synthesize cold tolerance strategies of well-studied species within this order, finding that diapause is a distinctive mechanism that has independently evolved in different genera and families of Lepidoptera. However, the occurrence of diapause in each life stage is specific to the species, and in most studied lepidopteran species, the feeding stage (as larva) is the predominant overwintering stage. We also found that the onset of diapause and the improvement of cold tolerance are interdependent phenomena that typically occur together. Moreover, adopting a cold tolerance strategy is not an inherent, fixed trait and is greatly influenced by a species' geographic distribution and rearing conditions. This review further finds that freeze avoidance rather than freeze tolerance or chill susceptibility is the primary cold tolerance strategy among lepidopteran species. The cold hardiness of lepidopteran insects primarily depends on the accumulation of cryoprotectants and the depression of the supercooling point. We highlight variations in cold tolerance strategies and mechanisms among a subset of Lepidoptera, however, further work is needed to elucidate these strategies for the vast numbers of neglected species and populations to understand broad-scale responses to global change.

[Supercooling capacity and cold hardiness of the Pararcyplera microptera meridionalis (Orthoptera: Acrididae) eggs]

Abstract:Using the thermocouple method, the supercooling point (SCP) and cold hardiness of Pararcyplera microptera meridionalis eggs were measured in the laboratory. The soil water content significantly affected the water content of pre-diapause eggs, but had no significant effect on the SCP, and the water content of pre-diapause eggs rose with the increasing soil water content. There were highly significant differences among the SCPs, water contents or fat contents in the eggs at different developmental stages. With the egg' s development, the water content decreased from 51.5% at oviposition to 46.8% in 120 days after oviposition, the fat content increased from 10.5% (fresh mass)/19.0% (dry mass) to 14.5% (fresh mass)/28.9% (dry mass), and the SCP declined from -23.5 degrees C to -30.0 degrees C. There was a significant correlation between the SCP and the water content or fat content. The SCPs of deep-diapause eggs were lower than those of pre- and early-diapause eggs. The different low temperatures and treatment durations significantly affected the survival rate of diapause eggs. The lethal low temperature (Ltemp50) for 12 h exposure was -27.3 degrees C and the lethal time (Ltime50) at -25 degrees C was 22.73 days. As the mean SCPs of diapause eggs was much similar to their Ltemp50, the SCP could be considered as a good indicator of cold hardiness for P. m. meridionalis eggs and this species is a freeze-intolerant insect.
Physiological and biochemical differences in diapause and non-diapause pupae of Sericinus montelus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)

Abstract:The swallowtail butterfly, Sericinus montelus Gray, is endemic to East Asia, has high ornamental value but faces an increased risk of extinction. To understand the overwintering strategies of this species, the dynamic changes in supercooling point (SCP) and water and biochemical contents of diapause-destined and non-diapause S. montelus pupae were investigated. The SCP of laboratory-reared diapause pupae was as low as −26°C compared to −24°C in diapause pupae in the field. Although there was no significant difference in total water content between diapause-destined and non-diapause pupae, the free water of diapause-destined pupae was significantly lower, and the bound water was significantly higher, than that of non-diapause pupae. Lipid, glycogen, and protein contents of diapause-destined pupae showed a downward trend, whereas the total sugar content showed the opposite trend after pupation. The glycogen content decreased rapidly during the initial stage of pupation, whereas the lipid content decreased significantly after 30 days of pupation, suggesting that diapause-destined pupae deplete glycogen stores during the pre-diapause period and then switch to using lipids during the diapause maintenance phase. Trehalose levels in diapause-destined pupae increased significantly and remained high after pupation. Meanwhile, the trehalose content of overwintering pupae during the diapause maintenance period was significantly higher than that of diapause termination pupae in the field. These results suggest that trehalose is the main cryoprotectant for overwintering pupae. Thus, diapausing S. montelus pupae appear to be freeze avoidant, accumulate trehalose as a cryoprotectant, and reduce the free water content to decrease the SCP, enhancing their cold tolerance.

Characterization of Cold and Heat Tolerance of Bactrocera tau (Walker)

Abstract:Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a serious, economically important invasive pest that has spread and been established in many regions worldwide. Temperature is a crucial abiotic factor governing insect activity, fitness, and geographical distribution. Yet, surprisingly, the tolerance of B. tau to extreme cold and heat stress remains unclear. Here, we measured the supercooling point (SCP) of different life stages of B. tau. Further, several life stages of B. tau (egg, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instar larvae, 1-day-old pupae, and 3-day-old adult) were subjected to six low temperatures (−9, −7, −5, −3, −1, and 0 °C) and six high temperatures (39, 40, 41, 42, 43, and 44 °C) for various durations (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 h), and three-way survival–time–temperature relationships were investigated. We found that the SCPs differed significantly among different life stages of B. tau, being the lowest for SCP of eggs, at −25.82 ± 0.51 °C. There was no significant effect of sex on the mean SCPs of B. tau adults, except for 45- to 50-day-old flies. In addition, an interaction effect was uncovered between tested temperatures and exposure duration upon B. tau mortality at different life stages. Eggs exhibited the strongest cold tolerance, yet the weakest heat tolerance. The 3rd instar larvae were the most heat- and cold tolerant among larval stages, followed by the 2nd and 1st instar larvae. The upper limit of the chill injury zone (ULCIZ) for 3-day-old adult and 1-day-old pupae was −2.51 °C and −2.50 °C, respectively, while their corresponding lower limit of thermal injury zone (LLTIZ) was 39.39 °C and 38.29 °C. This paper presents valuable data to provide an integrated knowledge for understanding the cold and heat tolerance potential of B. tau and ensure the proper implementation of post-harvest phytosanitary protocols for this pest’s disinfestation.

Abstract:The accumulation of trehalose has been suggested as a mechanism underlying insect cross-tolerance to cold/freezing and drought. Here we show that exposing diapausing larvae of the drosophilid fly, Chymomyza costata to dry conditions significantly stimulates their freeze tolerance. It does not, however, improve their tolerance to desiccation, nor does it significantly affect trehalose concentrations. Next, we use metabolomics to compare the complex alterations to intermediary metabolism pathways in response to three environmental factors with different ecological meanings: environmental drought (an environmental stressor causing mortality), decreasing ambient temperatures (an acclimation stimulus for improvement of cold hardiness), and short days (an environmental signal inducing diapause). We show that all three factors trigger qualitatively similar metabolic rearrangement and a similar phenotypic outcome—improved larval freeze tolerance. The similarities in metabolic response include (but are not restricted to) the accumulation of typical compatible solutes and the accumulation of energy-rich molecules (phosphagens). Based on these results, we suggest that transition to metabolic suppression (a state in which chemical energy demand is relatively low but need for stabilization of macromolecules is high) represents a common axis of metabolic pathway reorganization towards accumulation of non-toxic cytoprotective compounds, which in turn stimulates larval freeze tolerance.

Abstract:Psyttalia incisi (Silvestri) is the dominant parasitoid against Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) in fruit-producing regions of southern China. Prior to a large-scale release, it is important to generate a sufficient stockpile of P. incisi whilst considering how best to maintain their quality and performance; cold storage is an ideal method to achieve these aims. In this study, the impacts of temperature and storage duration on the developmental parameters of P. incisi pupae at different age intervals were assessed. Then, four of the cold storage protocols were chosen for further evaluating their impacts on the quality parameters of post-storage adults. Results showed that the emergence rate of P. incisi was significantly affected by storage temperature, storage duration, and pupal age interval and their interactions. However, when late-age P. incisi pupae developed at a temperature of 13 °C for 10 or 15 d, no undesirable impacts on dry weight, flight ability, longevity, reproduction parameters of post-storage adults, emergence rate, or the female proportion of progeny were recorded. Our findings demonstrate that cold storage has the potential for enhancing the flexibility and effectiveness of the large-scale production and application of P. incisi.

Abstract:The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata is a new, invasive pest of Platanus trees in China. Although C. ciliata is often subjected to acute low temperatures in early winter and spring in northern and eastern China, the cold tolerance of C. ciliata has not been well studied. The objectives of this study were to determine whether adults of C. ciliata are capable of rapid cold hardening (RCH), and to compare the benefits of RCH vs. cold acclimation (ACC) in the laboratory. When the adult females incubated at 26°C were transferred directly to the discriminating temperature (−12°C) for 2h, survival was only 22%. However, exposure to 0°C for 4h before transfer to −12°C for 2h induced RCH, i.e., increased survival to 68%. RCH could also be induced by gradual cooling of the insects at rates between 0.1 and 0.25°Cmin−1. The protection against cold shock obtained through RCH at 0°C for 4h was lost within 1h if the adults were returned to 26°C before exposure to −12°C. Survival at both −12 and −5°C was greater for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults (for ACC, adults were kept at 15°C for 5days), and the lethal temperature (2h exposure) was lower for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults. The results suggest that RCH may help C. ciliata survive the acute low temperatures that often occur in early winter and early spring in northern and eastern China.
Comparative transcriptome analysis of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) and Liriomyza sativae (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in response to rapid cold hardening

Abstract:The ability of insets to react efficiently to fluctuation in temperature is crucial for them to survive in variable surroundings. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) is a process that increase cold tolerance in most insect species. The molecular mechanisms of RCH remain largely unknown, and whether it is associated with transcriptional changes is unclear. In this study, we compared the transcriptomes of Liriomyza trifolii and L . sativae exposed to RCH to investigate the transcript abundance due to RCH in both species. RNA-seq revealed 93,166 assembled unigenes, and 34,303 of these were annotated in the L . trifolii and L . sativae transcriptome libraries. After a 4-h treatment at 1°C (RCH) compared with control, 268 and 606 unigenes were differentially expressed in L . trifolii and L . sativae , respectively. When comparing pupae exposed to 2h cold shock directly with pupae went through 4h acclimation prior to 2h cold shock, 60 and 399 unigenes were differentially expressed in L trifolii and L sativae , respectively. Genes that were commonly expressed in both L . trifolii and L . sativae , included cytochrome P450, cuticular protein, glucose dehydrogenase, solute carrier family 22 and cationic amino acid transporter. Additionally, several pathways including galactose metabolism and peroxisome were significantly enriched during RCH. Our results show that the transcriptional response is correlated with RCH in the pupal stage of the two Liriomyza species, but more transcriptional changes were identified in L sativae than in L . trifolii .
