Abstract:The coconut palm plantation industry relies heavily on expert advice to identify and treat infections. Computer vision in deep learning technology opened up an avenue in the agriculture domain to find a solution. This study focuses on the development of an end-to-end framework to detect stem bleeding disease, leaf blight disease, and pest infection by Red palm weevil in coconut trees by applying image processing and deep learning technology. A set of hand-collected images of healthy and unhealthy coconut tree images were segmented by employing popular segmentation algorithms to easily locate the abnormal boundaries. The custom-designed deep 2D-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is trained to predict diseases and pest infections. Also, the state of the art Keras pre-trained CNN models VGG16, VGG19, InceptionV3, DenseNet201, MobileNet, Xception, InceptionResNetV2, and NASNetMobile were fine-tuned to classify the images either as infected or as healthy through the inductive transfer learning method. The empirical study ascertains that k-means clustering segmentation was more effective than the Thresholding and Watershed segmentation methods. Furthermore, InceptionResNetV2 and MobileNet obtained a classification accuracy of 81.48% and 82.10%, respectively, and Cohen's Kappa values of 0.77 and 0.74, respectively. The hand-designed CNN model achieved 96.94% validation accuracy with a Kappa value of 0.91. The MobileNet model and customized 2D-CNN model were deployed in the web application through the micro-web framework Flask to automatically detect the coconut tree disease or pest infection.

Abstract:Coconut production is the most important and one of the main sources of income in the Sri Lankan economy. The recent time it has been observed that most of the coconut trees are affected by the diseases which gradually reduces the strength and production of coconut. Most of the tree leaves are affected by pest diseases and nutrient deficiency. Our main intensive is to enhance the livelihood of coconut leaves and identify the diseases at the early stage so that farmers get more benefits from coconut production. This paper proposes the detection of pest attack and nutrient deficiency in the coconut leaves and analysis of the diseases. Coconut leaves monitorization has been taken place after the use of pesticides and fertilizer with the help of the finest machine learning and image processing techniques. Rather than human experts, automatic recognition will be beneficial and the fastest approach to identify the diseases in the coconut leaves very efficiently. Thus, in this project, we developed an android mobile application to identify the pests by their food behaviors, pest diseases and the nutrition deficiencies in the coconut trees. As an initial step, all datasets for image processing technology met pre-processing steps such as converting RGB to greyscale, filtering, resizing, horizontal flip and vertical flip. After completing the above steps, the classification was performed by analyzing several algorithms in the literature review. SVM and CNN were chosen as the best and appropriate classifier with 93.54% and 93.72% of accuracy respectively. The outcome of this project will help the farmers to increase the coconut production and undoubtedly will make a revolution in the agriculture sector.
Defective Kernel Detection Using A Linear Colour Ccd

Abstract:This study was aimed at detecting defective wheat (Triticum durum Desf) with a machine vision system of linear colour charge-coupled device. One thousand one hundred and sixty-nine images were captured for sound kernels, 710 for black germ kernels and 627 for broken kernels. A software package was developed to extract various morphological, colour and texture features from the images captured. Then the experimental data were subjected to multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis was employed to differentiate samples from different categories. Partial least square discriminant analysis and venetian blinds cross-validation were used to develop classification models. The best detection accuracies of samples were 92.7, 88.0 and 89.6% for black germ kernels, broken kernels and sound kernels. The results have proved that it is feasible and effective to employ partial least square discriminant analysis for feature selection and defective kernel detection.

Abstract:Maturity of the coconut is judged manually based on the shape, color, weight, shaking sound, timeframe, etc. Currently, there is not much research being done to find solutions involving the latest techniques including fuzzy, machine learning and deep learning techniques for identifying maturity of the coconuts without human intervention. These techniques have significant challenges in detecting the multiple classes in coconut maturity due to difference in size and shape of the coconuts and the complex nature of their backgrounds as each coconut tree and each coconut bunch are unique. In this research work, we propose an integrated fuzzy and deep learning model (IFDM) to identify the maturity classes of coconut. Deep learning-based Mask R-CNN is used to classify and segment the coconut images. The combined fuzzy system (CFS) extracts the color, shape and scratch features with a fuzzy extraction technique for each feature. A probability-based fuzzy integration (PFI) method integrates the output from each fuzzy extraction to classify the coconuts. Decision-making probability (DMP) model combines the class probability of the probability-based fuzzy integration method and Mask R-CNN model to obtain the final coconut maturity class. The dataset with 10,000 images is used for training. Two test datasets, the first one containing 1754 real-time coconut images and the second containing 1000 cropped coconut images from the background, are used for testing. Using the proposed learning model in real time, an accuracy of 86.3% is obtained in classifying the maturity classes of coconuts. While integrating the models like Yolo v3, Yolo v5, Faster R-CNN, random forest and KNN with combined fuzzy system, Mask R-CNN performed better in terms of accuracy.

Discrimination of Different Types Damage of Tomato Seedling by Electronic Nose

Abstract:The profiles of volatile compounds emitted by plants varies in response to different damage. The potential of electronic nose technology to monitor such changes, with the aim of diagnosing plant health was investingted. An electronic nose(E-nose)was used to analyse tomato seedlings that were subjected to differnent types of damage(infection by Early blight disease, infection by Gray mold disease, mechanically damage, and undamaged). Principal component analysis(PCA), linear discrimination analysis(LDA), back-propagation neural network(BPNN), and support vector machine (SVM) network were used to evaluate the E-nose data. The results indicated that the E-nose can successfully discriminate between tomato seedling with different types of damage. The results of PCA and LDA showed that clusters of data were divided into 3 groups (ZP, HP, and CP/MP). Samples from groups CP and MP overlapped partially. Back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and support vector machine (SVM) network were used to evaluate the E-nose data. Good discrimination results were obtained using SVM and BPNN. The results demonstrate that it is plausible to use E-nose technology as a method for monitoring damage in tomato seedling.

Abstract:The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, is one of the three main cotton pests and causes serious damage to the yield and quality of cotton fiber in the world. In this study, an electronic nose (E-nose) was employed to detect cotton plants damaged by cotton bollworm of different instars. Stable value, mean differential value, wavelet energy and the coefficients of the fitted quadratic polynomial function were extracted as four kinds of feature parameters from the electronic nose curves. Principal component analysis (PCA), Multi-layerperceptron (MLP) neural network, Radial basis function (RBF) neural network and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the PCA analysis of four feature parameters couldn‘t discriminate the cotton plants damaged by cotton bollworm of different instars perfectly. The classification accuracies of MLPNN, RBFNN and ELM based on four feature parameters were quite satisfying which were both more than 90%. ELM had the best classification performance that the accuracies of training set and test set based on four feature parameters were all 100%. The wavelet energy value had a good classification performance based on the three neural networks. It indicates that the wavelet energy value is potential in the feature extraction of E-nose data. It could be concluded that E-nose is a potential technique for detecting cotton plants damage by cotton bollworm of different instars. Cotton, Cotton bollworm, E-nose, Feature extraction.

Abstract:Plants change the emission of induced volatiles in response to damage and herbivore attack, and monitoring the change of such volatiles could provide a nondestructive means of plant health measurement. Current monitoring techniques for plant volatiles are time-consuming and costly. The main objective of this research is to figure out whether electronic nose (e-nose) technique can be used to differentiate rice plants with different degrees of mechanical damage. A portable e-nose (PEN2) is used to characterize and classify rice plants subjected to three degrees of mechanical damage compared with undamaged control plants. Principle component analysis (PCA), Linear discriminant analysis (LDA), Stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA), and Back-propagation neural network (BPNN) are applied to evaluate the data. Different degrees of damaged rice plants are better distinguished using LDA than using PCA. The average correction ratio of testing set of BPNN is 75%. The results obtained indicate that it is possible to classify different degrees of damaged rice plants using e-nose signals. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using an e-nose to rice plant damage assessment.

Abstract:This study employed electronic nose (E-nose) to detect tea plants with different types of damage (undamaged, mechanically damaged, damages caused by Ectropis obliqua and Ectropis grisescens). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was employed as an auxiliary technique for proving the potential of E-nose detection. A new feature extraction method was applied for obtaining comprehensive features of E-nose dataset. Feature selection method based on principal component analysis (PCA) was applied for further feature selection. Four dimensionality reduction methods [PCA, locality preserving projections (LPP), kernel principal component analysis and locally linear embedding] and three classification algorithms [multilayer perceptron neural network, extreme learning machine and support vector machine (SVM)] were employed, and the best combination of dimensionality reduction method and classification algorithm was determined. The results showed that the combination of LPP and SVM was the best, and its correct discrimination rate was as high as 100%, which proved the advantage of the new signal processing method and the feasibility of E-nose in discriminating among tea plants with different types of damage.

The results indicated that the E-nose can successfully discriminate between rice plants with different types of damage. The discrimination was more pronounced after the LDA than after the PCA. The front 5 principal component values of the PCA were extracted and they acted as the input date for the neural network analyses. Good discrimination results were obtained using these front 5 principal component values in LVQ and BPNN. Abstract:Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is one of the world's most economically important tree species, and coconut palm plantations dominate many islands and tropical coastlines. However, the expansion of plantations to supply international markets threatens biodiversity. Therefore, monitoring the plantations is important not only for the food industry but also for evaluating and mitigating environmental impacts of the industry. However, the detection of coconut trees from space is challenging because the palms' crowns hold only limited pixels of high-resolution optical imagery. Here, we present an accurate and real-time COCOnut tree DETection method (COCODET) which uses satellite imagery to detect individual palms, comprising three components. First, an Adaptive Feature Enhancement (AFE) module is designed to improve both the capacity of representation at the highest level of the feature map and feature representation ability and help distinguish between coconut trees and other vegetation. Secondly, we modify a region proposal network to produce a Tree-shape Region Proposal Network (T-RPN) for producing coconut tree candidates. Finally, we create a Cross Scale Fusion (CSF) module for integrating multi-scale information to improve small tree detection; this fuses features of coconut crowns from different levels, connecting shallow and deep-level semantic features. We applied COCODET to detect coconut trees in four remote atolls from the Acteon Group in French Polynesia. The natural habitats on the islands were previously cleared for coconut plantations, many of which have since been abandoned. COCODET achieved an average F1 score of 86.5% using its real-time inference process, considerably outperforming other cutting-edge object detection algorithms (4.3 similar to 12.0% more accurate). We detected 688 ha of coconuts and 182 ha of natural habitat on the islands, and within the coconut groves we detected 120,237 individuals. Our analyses indicate that deep learning approaches can be successfully applied to coconut palm detection, aiding efforts to understand human impacts on natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
Discrimination among Tea Plants Either with Different Invasive Severities or Different Invasive Times Using MOS Electronic Nose Combined with a New Feature Extraction Method

Abstract:Damage of tea plant causes a lot of loss in tea production, but there is not an appropriate method to detect tea plants with pest damage. In this work, electronic nose (E-nose) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), as an auxiliary technique, were employed to detect tea plants with pest damage in two aspects, including tea plants with different invasive severities and with different invasive times, for giving a comprehensive results. A new feature extraction method based on a piecewise function was proposed and its performance was compared with those of the other three commonly employed models-polynomial functions, exponential functions, and Gaussian functions. Feature selection based on principal component analysis (PCA) and multi-layered perceptron (MLP) were employed for further feature reduction and classification, respectively. The results showed that feature extraction based on piecewise function was the best. The combination of feature extraction based on piecewise function, feature selection based on PCA and MLP was the best method and good enough for the classification in tea plants damage area. The results proved that E-nose was able to detect tea plants either with different invasive severities or different invasive times.

Abstract:Food resources face severe damages under extraordinary situations of catastrophes such as earthquakes, cyclones, and tsunamis. Under such scenarios, speedy assessment of food resources from agricultural land is critical as it supports aid activity in the disaster hit areas. In this article, a deep learning approach is presented for the detection and segmentation of coconut tress in aerial imagery provided through the AI competition organized by the World Bank in collaboration with OpenAerialMap and WeRobotics. Maked Region-based Convolutional Neural Network approach was used identification and segmentation of coconut trees. For the segmentation task, Mask R-CNN model with ResNet50 and ResNet1010 based architectures was used. Several experiments with different configuration parameters were performed and the best configuration for the detection of coconut trees with more than 90% confidence factor was reported. For the purpose of evaluation, Microsoft COCO dataset evaluation metric namely mean average precision (mAP) was used. An overall 91% mean average precision for coconut trees detection was achieved.

Abstract:Severe weather events can cause large financial losses to farmers. Detailed information on the location and severity of damage will assist farmers, insurance companies, and disaster response agencies in making wise post-damage decisions. The goal of this study was a proof-of-concept to detect damaged crop areas from aerial imagery using computer vision and deep learning techniques. A specific objective was to compare existing object detection algorithms to determine which was best suited for crop damage detection. Two modes of crop damage common in maize (corn) production were simulated: stalk lodging at the lowest ear and stalk lodging at ground level. Simulated damage was used to create a training and analysis data set. An unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with a RGB camera was used for image acquisition. Three popular object detectors (Faster R-CNN, YOLOv2, and RetinaNet) were assessed for their ability to detect damaged regions in a field. Average precision was used to compare object detectors. YOLOv2 and RetinaNet were able to detect crop damage across multiple late-season growth stages. Faster R-CNN was not successful as the other two advanced detectors. Detecting crop damage at later growth stages was more difficult for all tested object detectors. Weed pressure in simulated damage plots and increased target density added additional complexity.

Abstract:The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants that suffer mechanical damage of different severities are different, which can be used as a principle to determine if a plant has suffered mechanical damage and predict the damage severity. This study used both electronic nose (E-nose) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques to identify mechanically damaged tomato seedlings and predict the damage severity. E-nose performed well in qualitative classification and quantitative prediction. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) indicated the feasibility of discriminating tomato seedlings with different mechanical damage severities. A total of 26 VOCs were identified using GC-MS. The concentration of each constituent was calculated, and the trends of their concentrations with the increase in mechanical damage severity were determined. Multiple regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between gas sensors and VOCs and indicated a good correlation. A back-propagation neural network (BPNN) was developed to predict mechanical damage severity based on the E-nose data, with 100% correct discrimination for the training set and 91.7% for the testing set. This study demonstrated that E-nose could predict the mechanical damage severity of tomato seedlings.
Quantitative assessment of adulteration of coconut oil using transmittance multispectral imaging

Abstract:Economical to a fault, coconut oil is a commodity related to fraudulent activities such as oil adulteration for undue profits. Unfortunately, the conventional methods used in the detection of adulteration and toxicants are laborious, destructive, and time-consuming. Hence, it is imperative to engineer a non-destructive and rapid screening test with sufficient accuracy. To that end, the proposed work has an in-house developed imaging system hardware and a method to estimate relevant quality parameters from multispectral imagery. Multispectral images of adulterated coconut oil were analyzed through a cascade of statistical algorithms: Fisher Discriminant Analysis and Bhattacharyya distance respectively. In this work, a functional relationship was developed for the estimation of adulteration level that recorded an R2 of 0.9876 for the training samples and an MSE of 0.0029 for the testing samples. Besides, the proposed imaging system offers flexibility on post-processing of raw measurements as the algorithm is designed to operate from raw multispectral images. In addition, the developed imaging system is economical in its capacity to estimate the adulteration of coconut oil with remarkable accuracy considering the low cost of production. Moreover, the proposed work validates the use of multispectral imagery as an initial screening technique instead of expensive spectroscopy methods.

Abstract:Classically, position effect variegation has been studied in Drosophila and results when a euchromatic gene is placed adjacent to either centromeric heterochromatin or to a telomeric domain. In such a circumstance expression of the locus variegates, being active in some cells and silent in others. Over the last few years a comparable phenomenon in yeast has been discovered. This system promises to tell us much about this curious behavior. Indeed, experiments reported recently(1) indicate that the variegation of a yeast telomeric gene is cell-cycle regulated. The results suggest the following model. During DNA replication there is a disassembly of chromatin that allows a competition between silencing factors and transactivators to take place. Thus, reassembly of the domain may result in either the repression or the expression of the affected gene and, hence, produce a variegating phenotype.
Deep learning classification system for coconut maturity levels based on acoustic signals

Abstract:The advancement of computer image processing, pattern recognition, signal processing, and other technologies has gradually replaced the manual methods of classifying fruit with computer and mechanical methods. In the field of agriculture, the intelligent classification of post-harvested fruit has enabled the use of smart devices that creates a direct impact on farmers, especially on export products. For coconut classification, it remains to be traditional in process. This study presents a classification of the coconut dataset based on acoustic signals. To address the imbalanced dataset, a data augmentation technique was conducted through audiomentation and procedural audio generation methods. Audio signals under premature, mature, and overmature now have 4,050, 4,050, and 5,850 audio signals, respectively. To address the updation of the classification system and the classification accuracy performance, deep learning models were utilized for classifying the generated audio signals from data generation. Specifically, RNN and LSTM models were trained and tested, and their performances were compared with each other and the machine learning methods used by Caladcad et al. (2020). The two DL models showed impressive performance with both having an accuracy of 97.42% and neither of them outperformed the other since there are no significant differences in their classification performance.

The Development of a Defect Detection Model from the High-Resolution Images of a Sugarcane Plantation Using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract:This article presents a defect detection model of sugarcane plantation images. The objective is to assess the defect areas occurring in the sugarcane plantation before the harvesting seasons. The defect areas in the sugarcane are usually caused by storms and weeds. This defect detection algorithm uses high-resolution sugarcane plantations and image processing techniques. The algorithm for defect detection consists of four processes: (1) data collection, (2) image preprocessing, (3) defect detection model creation, and (4) application program creation. For feature extraction, the researchers used image segmentation and convolution filtering by 13 masks together with mean and standard deviation. The feature extraction methods generated 26 features. The K-nearest neighbors algorithm was selected to develop a model for the classification of the sugarcane areas. The color selection method was also chosen to detect defect areas. The results show that the model can recognize and classify the characteristics of the objects in sugarcane plantation images with an accuracy of 96.75%. After the comparison with the expert surveyor’s assessment, the accurate relevance obtained was 92.95%. Therefore, the proposed model can be used as a tool to calculate the percentage of defect areas and solve the problem of evaluating errors of yields in the future.

Hence, with the evolution of tree-climbing robots and robotic end-effectors, the development of autonomous coconut harvesters with the help of machine vision technologies is of great interest to farmers. However, coconuts are very hard and experience high occlusions on the tree. Hence, accurate detection of coconut clusters based on their occlusion condition is necessary to plan the motion of the robotic end-effector. This study proposes a deep learning-based object detection Faster Regional-Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) model to detect coconut clusters as non-occluded and leaf-occluded bunches. To improve identification accuracy, an attention mechanism was introduced into the Faster R-CNN model. The image dataset was acquired from a commercial coconut plantation during daylight under natural lighting conditions using a handheld digital single-lens reflex camera. The proposed model was trained, validated, and tested on 900 manually acquired and augmented images of tree crowns under different illumination conditions, backgrounds, and coconut varieties. On the test dataset, the overall mean average precision (mAP) and weighted mean intersection over union (wmIoU) attained by the model were 0.886 and 0.827, respectively, with average precision for detecting non-occluded and leaf-occluded coconut clusters as 0.912 and 0.883, respectively. The encouraging results provide the base to develop a complete vision system to determine the harvesting strategy and locate the cutting position on the coconut cluster.

Abstract:Coconut oil known for its wide range of uses is often adulterated with other edible oils. Repeated use of coconut oil in food preparation could lead to many health issues. Existing methods available for evaluating quality of oil are laborious and time consuming. Therefore, we propose an imaging system hardware and image processing-based algorithm to estimate the adulteration of coconut oil with palm oil as the adulterant. A clear functional relationship between adulteration level and Bhattacharyya distance was observed as R2 = 0.9876 on the training samples. Thereafter, another algorithm is proposed to develop a spectral-clustering based classifier to determine the effect of reheat and reuse of coconut oil. Distinct clusters were obtained for different levels of reheated oil classes and the classification was performed with an accuracy of 0.983 on training samples. Further, the input images for the proposed algorithms were generated using an in-house developed transmittance based multispectral imaging system.
