Abstract:With technological advancements, domestic appliances are leveraging smart technologies for getting smarter through learning from their past usage to enhance user comfort and energy efficiency. Among these, ceiling fans, though widely used in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) in temperate regions, still lack a cohesive system integrating all necessary sensors with a machine learning-based system to optimize their operation for comfort and energy saving and to experimentally verify the performance under different usage scenarios that could transform a high-power-consuming device into an energy-efficient system. Therefore, the present research proposes an experimentally verified and energy-efficient Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT)-based system that could be retrofitted with regular DC ceiling fans. An Internet of Things (IoTs) circuit, equipped with an ESP8266 microcontroller, temperature, humidity, and motion sensors, was designed to communicate with a developed Android application and an online dashboard. A total of 123 ceiling fans with the designed IoTs circuit were deployed at various household locations for two years, with manual operations for the first year. In the next year, an auto mode based on the predictions of the machine learning model was introduced. The experimental outcomes showed that the fan with added smart features reduced the energy loss by almost 50% as compared to conventional AC ceiling fans. Consequently, the carbon footprint of the appliances is reduced significantly. A high user-rated acceptability of the system, examined through a standard measure, was also achieved.

Abstract:Pervasive monitoring, delivered through the innovations of wireless sensor systems, disperses across numerous areas of modern living. This enables environmental parameters to be detected, interpreted, evaluated and deduced from natural resources. The increase in the number of Internet-connected devices has prompted the escalation of the technological revolution in the Internet of Things (IoT). The seamless integration of sensors and actuators enables IoT technologies to be one of the paramount of modern life. The continuous development of IoT technologies allows it to become more intelligent, resourceful, and user friendly every day. IoT evolutions include smart homes, smart grids, smart cities, connected cars, wearables, smart industries, smart retail, etc. A variety of key experiments and analyses have been carried out to develop infrastructure through IoT. Intelligent ventilation systems, indoor automated lighting, and auto autonomous decision-making systems are among the most significant and recent implementations of IoT. This article focuses on the design and implementation of an intelligent autonomous lighting and air ventilation system capable of energy-aware self-sufficient lighting, monitoring temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, and smoke. This paper has prescribed an embedded system for autonomous lighting and ventilation system with HTTP protocol based monitoring over smartphones or PCs. Moreover, the system is capable of logging real-time data into the cloud server through which a user can also monitor the real-time over the cloud from anywhere in the world. Since it is a wireless gadget, communication with the control system takes place via the GSM and WiFi network, using the modern HTTP protocol. Moreover, the work has performed energy consumption and economic analysis of the prescribed system to show its effectiveness. The article has also provided an overview of IoT infrastructure at the commencement of the work.

Abstract:Smart cities, as well as smart homes research, are becoming of concern, especially in the field of energy consumption and production. However, there is a lack in the dataset that can be used to simulate smart city energy consumption and prediction or even smart homes. Therefore, this paper provides a carefully generated dataset for smart home energy management simulation. Five datasets are generated and analysed to ensure suitability, including 20, 50, 100, and 200 homes across 365 days. For more accurate data, energy consumption and production for 50 homes are generated based on real input taken from a dataset for homes in Saudi Arabia. Due to the unavailability of a comprehensive dataset related to the complex scenario of smart home sensors, energy consumption, and peer-to-peer data exchange, synthetic data was generated to support the simulation of smart home energy generation and consumption. This synthetic data plays a crucial role in situations where simulating uncommon events, ensuring data availability, facilitating extensive experimentation and model validation, and enabling scalability are paramount. It offers a valuable opportunity to incorporate these rare yet significant occurrences into the simulation, particularly in the context of infrequent events, such as abnormal energy consumption patterns observed in smart homes. The generated data is analysed and validated in this article, ready to be used for many smart home and city research.

Abstract:In everyday life, electricity is necessary, and proper use is critical. To strengthen home electricity control, the existing systems have been examined over the years. However, the existing PMAS method’s error ratio is higher and does not allow for a remote monitoring system. Therefore, this study proposes a smart monitoring and control system (SMACS) for household appliances. The application’s significance is to monitor household appliances’ electricity usage using hardware and the Internet of Things (IoT) methods. The prototype of the proposed system is designed and developed considering Arduino UNO, a liquid crystal display (LCD), an ACS712 current sensor module, relays, and AC sources. The components are selected from the software library, and the simulation results are found the same as the prototype. WiFi module ESP8266 is not included in the design because it is not provided in the system. The data is recorded in cloud storage using Thing-speak. A mobile application (Virtuino) also accesses the data to visualize it through the graphical and numerical display. This study provides users with an easy system to monitor and control household appliances’ power consumption using mobile applications. Results show that the proposed system provides 0.6% current errors for the hairdryer appliance, whereas the existing Power Monitoring and Switching (PMAS) system provides 7.8% current errors.

Abstract:Over the years, the automation of traditional power grids has been taking place to overcome the difficulties such as blackouts, outages, demand-side management, load profiling, enhancing customer participation, etc. This automation enables the traditional grids to be transformed into smart grids. Smart homes/buildings are key sub-categories of smart grids. The advanced metering infrastructure connected to them continuously captures and stores the energy consumption data as datasets. Usually, understanding the structure of data and the behaviour of customers from energy consumption datasets is a tedious task. There are some literature works tried to explore various smart home energy consumption datasets as well as investigate customer behaviour, however, most of these methods are complex in implementation. Hence, this paper proposes a simple approach for the comprehensive exploration of the smart home energy consumption dataset. This approach can be used for any similar smart home dataset that contains numerical data. Further, using the exploration results, this paper analyzes the customers’ energy consumption behaviour by identifying peak hours in communication and electrical perspectives. To implement the proposed approach, an energy consumption dataset ‘Tracebase’ is considered as a case study. The exploration of the considered dataset results in 2356 files distributed among various directories. For customer behaviour analysis, the energy consumption data of all 43 appliances (with more than 95 million records) is considered from the “complete” directory of the “Tracebase” dataset. This analysis revealed the peak hours as hour-23 from the communication perspective and hour-9 from the electrical perspective. These represent the customer behaviour in terms of their participation in the power network, which further helps for better grid operations.

Abstract:The household is the basic unit of a residential community or building. High-resolution, long-term open data are necessary to help study residential electricity consumption, smart home technologies, and electricity flexibility technologies at household level. This paper introduces an IoT-based data collection platform (IDCP) consisting of gateways, sensors, and cloud servers. This platform can collect data on the occupant presence, indoor environment, window-opening states, and appliance electricity consumption simultaneously. This study deployed the IDCP in a single-family apartment in Beijing, China, and compiled a dataset, namely, CN-OBEE, including data on the per-minute occupant behavior, thermal environment, and appliance electricity use of the apartment for an entire year (from May 31, 2021, to May 31, 2022), and hourly meteorological data collected by the nearest national weather station during the same period. This dataset is the first detailed and publicly available occupant behavior and electricity use dataset for Chinese homes. As a regional feature, the dataset compiled by this study includes window-opening behavior and the use of split air conditioners (ACs).

Abstract:The world has a lot of want for energy due to the rapid pace of its consumption. The world's energy resources, especially non-renewable sources, are vanishing by leaps and bounds. However, agencies like the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable development have defined some preventive measures to consider while consuming energy. The main issue in Pakistan is that the consumer is not supplied with electric power in a managed way, and the way of installation causes a lot of impairment to the expensive tools in the power distribution system. The motivation of this research focuses on energy management, making the distribution authority more powerful, digitalization, and protection of expensive components in electrical power systems. The proposed methodology uses current and voltage sensors to remotely monitor the amount of power being supplied to the consumer continuously, along with a microcontroller responsible for activating the relay in case of over-consumption and the Global System for Mobile (GSM) network to warn the consumer and inform the authority. This research work prevents manual and laborious meter readings and protects electrical instruments. Further, this work can enable online billing, pre-paid billing, and energy saving and provide a base for power theft detection.

Abstract:Effective data collection is a prerequisite for energy saving, emission reduction and other sustainable operation of central air conditioning. However, current central air-conditioning data collection systems are costly to develop and difficult to integrate. To promote energy saving and emission reduction, this paper proposes an IoT-based data collection system for central air conditioning. Based on IoT and wireless sensor technology, this data acquisition system mainly consists of sub-systems such as host data acquisition sub-system, cooling tower data acquisition sub-system and pipeline pressure data acquisition sub-system to achieve multi-point acquisition of the central air-conditioning system. It also uses Kalman filtering technology to reject abnormal sensor data and optimise the data; it uses a combination of deep sleep and multiple power supplies to extend the service life of the cooling tower data acquisition subsystem; and it uses deep learning in the pipeline pressure data acquisition subsystem to greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of meter reading. After experiments, the acquisition system can monitor and analyse real-time operational data of central air-conditioners for intelligent regulation and predictive maintenance. Finally, the proposed system was experimentally demonstrated to be feasible in a postal building in Zhengzhou.

Abstract:In this paper a system to monitor and control the electricity consumption by means of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in buildings is presented. Wi-Fi smart plugs act as sensors to provide real-time power consumption data on a per device basis. This information is passed to a cloud-based platform via MQTT for further analysis. This mobile app is used to access the building's energy usage data in both real-time and historical, as well allowing control over connected devices from anywhere. The architecture of the system, i.e. hardware components, software infrastructure as well data flow are explained in details. The results show that the IoT-based smart plugs are providing accurate power consumption data with a low deviation. By providing electricity consumers with a greater level of detail on how and when they consume their power, this system can enable them to consciously exercise control over their energy consumption; which may result in reductions in cost as well as levels of inefficiency from the amount used.

Abstract:Nowadays, electricity consumption especially in Malaysia has increased by the year. One of the factors that led to the increase in electricity consumption of a building is the usage of air conditioners (AC). The inability of conventional AC remote controls to monitor indoor environment conditions of the building will lead to unnecessary extreme temperature setting, then causing unnecessary high electrical consumption. Also, the conventional AC remote control is not able to store and perform analysis on the environment condition data of the building for the use of energy management strategy. The conventional AC remote control is only able to show the temperature set point value of the system, which could not represent the comfort experienced by occupants. In this project, a new device which can monitor the indoor environment condition and estimated electricity consumption on a web server is developed. The device monitors a comprehensive thermal comfort index Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) representing the comfort experienced by the occupants. The device is equipped with wireless sensor modules for indoor and outdoor remote monitoring. The device can monitor the outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, and indoor relative humidity along with indoor PMV value and electricity consumption. This device can grant advance feature to conventional AC remote control without causing physical modification to the existing system.
Residential Appliance Usage Patterns From Overall Energy Consumption Data: A Statistical Machine Learning Approach

Abstract:Abstract Large energy-intensive domestic appliances like heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, electric water heaters, refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, and dryers can together comprise about 58% of annual residential electricity consumption in the US. Accurate knowledge of domestic appliance-level energy usage patterns can help energy modelers and electric utilities design optimal demand response programs in residential communities. However, while the widespread installation of residential smart meters in the US over the past decade has enabled electric utilities to collect diurnal individual household-level electricity consumption profiles, it is extremely rare to find location-specific, short-interval, disaggregated appliance-level data for individual residences. This study develops a novel methodology to reliably predict future domestic appliance energy consumption profiles based primarily on overall electricity consumption and local weather data. The model is demonstrated using fifteen-minute interval appliance-level empirical energy consumption data for a test-bed of 25 single-family detached homes in Austin, TX from Pecan Street Inc. — a non-profit entity based in Austin. Although the training of our model utilizes historical appliance profiles, the results obtained from this analysis can be used to reliably and accurately predict time-granular appliance-level energy consumption patterns (not only on/off times) using only the overall electricity consumption profile of the household. Thus, this study opens up the possibility for energy modelers to reliably forecast domestic appliance electricity consumption profiles without having appliance-level historical energy usage datasets available.

Abstract:Ceiling fans constitute a significant portion of home power consumption, especially in warm-climate developing nations. This research explores a range of solutions to enhance the efficiency of ceiling fans and assesses the global potential for power savings and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Leveraging commercially available technologies, it is feasible to achieve a remarkable 60% increase in ceiling fan efficiency. By implementing these efficiency upgrades in all ceiling fans sold by 2025, an impressive 80 TWh/year of electricity could be conserved, leading to the avoidance of 30 million metric tonnes of Carbon Di-oxide emissions worldwide. Additionally, this study investigates the effectiveness of policies and programs such as energy efficiency standards, consumer labelling, and financial incentives in expediting the adoption of energy-efficient ceiling fans. Furthermore, we delve into the advantages of integrating Brushless DC Motors (BLDC) in ceiling fans, where the linear relationships between current-to-torque and voltage-to-rpm offer enhanced energy conservation prospects.

Abstract:The aim of the research was to develop a concept of a remote measurement system for air quality management using IoT for an apartment with a mechanical exhaust system. The constant monitoring system with the possibility of manual control by the occupants allows teaching the occupants how to chose optimal settings with the biggest impact on the air quality. Additionally, using cloud data analysis, the measurements can be compared with simulations performed before the building construction. This allows choosing the proper apartment depending on the foreseen occupancy schedule and the family size.

Abstract:Energy conservation has become a hot worldwide topic for a number of years. Based on our research, the Web of Things can be used to conserve people's domestic energy consumption in a smart way. In this paper, we have proposed a model based on the Web of Things for the purpose of not only measuring power consumption of household appliances, but also providing web services for householders to scan and control their indoor electricity usage. In addition, we have designed and implemented a prototyping system, which comprised a smart outlet used to detect appliances' power consumption and control them, some sensors used to sense indoor circumstances including temperature, humidity and light intensity, a household gateway for data transmission, a service platform for data publishing and a mobile application. Finally, in order to verify the model's feasibility and efficiency, we have tested our system's performance by real-time and accuracy experiments.
The COVID-19 impact on air condition usage: a shift towards residential energy saving

Abstract:The enforcement of the Movement Control Order to curtail the spread of COVID-19 has affected home energy consumption, especially HVAC systems. Occupancy detection and estimation have been recognized as key contributors to improving building energy efficiency. Several solutions have been proposed for the past decade to improve the precision performance of occupancy detection and estimation in the building. Environmental sensing is one of the practical solutions to detect and estimate occupants in the building during uncertain behavior. However, the literature reveals that the performance of environmental sensing is relatively poor due to the poor quality of the training dataset used in the model. This study proposed a smart sensing framework that combined camera-based and environmental sensing approaches using supervised learning to gather standard and robust datasets related to indoor occupancy that can be used for cross-validation of different machine learning algorithms in formal research. The proposed solution is tested in the living room with a prototype system integrated with various sensors using a random forest regressor, although other techniques could be easily integrated within the proposed framework. The primary implication of this study is to predict the room occupation through the use of sensors providing inputs into a model to lower energy consumption. The results indicate that the proposed solution can obtain data, process, and predict occupant presence and number with 99.3% accuracy. Additionally, to demonstrate the impact of occupant number in energy saving, one room with two zones is modeled each zone with air condition with different thermostat controller. The first zone uses IoFClime and the second zone uses modified IoFClime using a design-builder. The simulation is conducted using EnergyPlus software with the random simulation of 10 occupants and local climate data under three scenarios. The Fanger model's thermal comfort analysis shows that up to 50% and 25% energy can be saved under the first and third scenarios.
The Development of an IoT-based Indoor Air Monitoring System Towards Smart Energy Efficient Classroom

Abstract:Indoor air quality has become a crucial issue, specifically during COVID 19 pandemic. The good indoor air quality will lead to occupants’ comfort condition, thus affecting their productivity. Indoor air temperature and relative humidity are two essential components of thermal comfort. This paper presents the development of a temperature and relative humidity monitoring system for the classroom using the Internet of Things (IoT). This system consists of three main components: logger nodes, a gateway logger, and an interconnected cloud server. The logger node (ESP8266 / ESP32 microcontroller and DHT22 sensor) is a device at the edge of the IoT system and is placed at the monitoring location. The logger gateway is built on a Raspberry Pi 4, which serves as an intermediate server. It receives periodic data (temperature and humidity) from the logger nodes through the publish-subscribe MQTT protocol and sends it to the MongoDB Atlas cloud database. The logger gateway saves all received logs into the SQLite database as temporary local storage and then uploads the data to the MongoDB Atlas cloud at a predefined interval. The MongoDB data is then displayed on a monitoring dashboard using MongoDB charts. The logger node with the DHT22 sensor has been adjusted using a linear model and successfully tested to monitor indoor and outdoor air conditions with satisfactory results. The recorded data has also been successfully modeled using the Gaussian Mixture Model and a simple Fuzzy model. These models can capture the dynamic of air condition in the room and predict the state of the cooling system.
Power Management in Smart Residential Building with Deep Learning Model for Occupancy Detection by Usage Pattern of Electric Appliances

Abstract:With the growth of smart building applications, occupancy information in residential buildings is becoming more and more significant. In the context of the smart buildings' paradigm, this kind of information is required for a wide range of purposes, including enhancing energy efficiency and occupant comfort. In this study, occupancy detection in residential building is implemented using deep learning based on technical information of electric appliances. To this end, a novel approach of occupancy detection for smart residential building system is proposed. The dataset of electric appliances, sensors, light, and HVAC, which is measured by smart metering system and is collected from 50 households, is used for simulations. To classify the occupancy among datasets, the support vector machine and autoencoder algorithm are used. Confusion matrix is utilized for accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 to demonstrate the comparative performance of the proposed method in occupancy detection. The proposed algorithm achieves occupancy detection using technical information of electric appliances by 95.7~98.4%. To validate occupancy detection data, principal component analysis and the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) algorithm are employed. Power consumption with renewable energy system is reduced to 11.1~13.1% in smart buildings by using occupancy detection.

Abstract:Over the last 30 years, our knowledge about the clinical behavior of breast cancer has increased substantially. Our ability to identify several prognostic subgroups and predict hormone-responsive and hormone-resistant disease has led to more rational utilization of endocrine and cytotoxic treatments. Breast cancer is sensitive to multiple cytotoxic compounds. It has been demonstrated that combination chemotherapy produces higher overall and complete remission rates than sequential single agents, and that doxorubicin-containing combinations are more effective than other regimens. The introduction of new cytotoxic agents, including the taxanes paclitaxel (Taxol; Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Princeton, NJ) and docetaxel, gemcitabine, anthrapyrazoles, thymidylate synthase inhibitors, antifols, and camptothecin analogues, has added substantially to our antitumor armamentarium. Combinations of new drugs with old agents have resulted in regimens of enhanced activity. A large number of randomized comparative trials will determine which combinations have the highest therapeutic ratio and need to be incorporated into the standard management of metastatic and high-risk primary breast cancer.

Abstract:The power generated in todayâ€TMs time is dominated using fossil fuels that may get exhausted within the coming decades. Monitoring and management of the energy consumption hold a prime standing due to the discrepancy between power demand and production. Power meters are a part of every household, which provides us with a measurement of the overall power consumed in units. The problem with them is that they do not provide us with the individual consumption of an electrical appliance leaving customers unsatisfied with the electricity bills. This paper presents the design and application of a smart power management system (SPMS) using a variety of sensors combined with an Arduino microcontroller. This will be replacing conventional home sockets with smart sockets, allowing us to cover the monitoring, control and safety aspects of any individual appliance in the house. This system is based on a newly evolving field worldwide, called the Internet of Things (IoT). The SPMS will be measuring the current, voltage, power factor and power consumed. Along with these measurements, it can also control the power state of the device and help protect against overvoltage and overcurrent. This is basically a home automation system, in combination with smart power management, all controlled and monitored by our smartphones. The edge this device has over conventional energy monitoring systems is that it allows the user to have an exact idea of individual power consumption plus the billing on a daily basis and take measures to reduce it.

Abstract:In recent time, internet has revolutionized the whole technology. It is acting as a backbone for the information technology. Subsequently, IoT has seen considerable development as internet became more common. Similarly, research is being carried out to make IoT applications more user friendly especially in web based and android technologies. Internet of thing gives an extensive control by enabling to control remotely the switching of electronics devices such as fan, water pump, cameras, TV etc. In this paper, an IoT based home automation system for remotely controlling the home equipment’s is proposed. We are using Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to control and monitor the electrical appliances with voice command through internet which gives more space for controlling electrical appliances. In automations, things are automatically controlled usually the basic tasks of turning ON/OFF of devices. Here we can not only turn on/off basic devices but can also regulate the speed of fan by setting it at i.e. 30%, 60 and 100%. This makes our IoT based system more intelligent to control electronic devices both from within the home and outside the home as long as internet is available. This will help to reduce the wastage of electricity and save human energy.
