Abstract:Ambient gamma dose rate (GDR) is the primary observation quantity for nuclear emergency management due to its high acquisition frequency and dense spatial deployment. However, ambient GDR is the sum of both cloud and ground shine, which hinders its effective utilization. In this study, an automatic method is proposed to identify the radioactive plume passage and to separate the cloud and ground shine in the total GDR. The new method is evaluated against a synthetic GDR dataset generated by JRODOS (Real Time On-line Decision Support) System and compared with another method (Hirayama, H. et al., 2014. Estimation of I-131 concentration using time history of pulse height distribution at monitoring post and detector response for radionuclide in plume. Transactions of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan 13:119-126, in Japanese (with English abstract)). The reconstructed cloud shine agrees well with the actual values for the whole synthetic dataset (1451 data points), with a very small absolute fractional bias (FB = 0.02) and normalized mean square error (NMSE = 2.04) as well as a large correlation coefficient (r = 0.95). The new method significantly outperforms the existing one (more than 95% reduction of FB and NMSE, and 61% improvement of the correlation coefficient), mainly due to the modification for high deposition events. The code of the proposed methodology and all the test data are available for academic and non-commercial use. The new approach with the detailed interpretation of the in-situ environment data will help improving the ability of off-site source term inverse estimation for nuclear accidents.

Abstract:One way to implement the defense against nuclear threat is based on the measurement and detection of radi-ation. To cope with the problems of low precision and slow warning speed in nuclear radiation monitoring and warning, a novel method based on adaptive autoencoder and improved Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) is proposed. Considering the large amount of redundant information in the nuclear radiation energy spectrum, an adaptive autoencoder network is designed to reduce the dimension of data. In order to overcome the problems of slow training speed of LSTM/GRU and insufficient utilization of internal features of the network, the polynomial combinations are increased, which will help to improve the accuracy on the task. The experiments conducted on data measured in real scenario show that the proposed method has high accuracy and reliability for nuclear radiation monitoring and early warning in the real world event.

Abstract:The state-controlled radiation environment automatic monitoring stations are important facilities for monitoring the quality and trends of the radiation environment. However, the anal ysis and utilization of monitoring data from these stations have limitations. To address this is sue, this pa per pro poses an ap proach that uti lizes the high-di men sional data vi su al iza tion method based on t-SNE and PCA-BIRCH algorithm's spectrum clustering model to classify historical spectrum data. Subsequently, a local outlier factor-based environmental spectrum abnormal fluctuation detection model is established to enhance discrimination of non-environmental factors causing spectrum anomalies. Results indicate significant differences in spectrum aggregation under different meteorological conditions. The clustering algo rithm ef fec tively sep a rates clear and rainy weather spec tra based on spec tral fea tures, with min i mal time con sump tion and re duced in ter fer ence from mixed spec trum data. By uti liz ing local density features, we establish an anomaly detection model, assigning an abnormal score to each spectrum. Comparative analysis demonstrates improved discriminability of the anomaly detection model for unclassified datasets. Our algorithm accurately identifies spectrum fluctuations caused by non-environmental factors amidst complex backgrounds, offering valuable technical support for environmental quality assurance and nuclear emergency decision-making.

Abstract:Static gamma-ray detector systems that are deployed outdoors for radiological monitoring purposes experience time- and spatially-varying natural backgrounds and encounters with man-made nuisance sources. In order to be sensitive to illicit sources, such systems must be able to distinguish those sources from benign variations due to, e.g., weather and human activity. In addition to fluctuations due to non-threats, each detector has its own response and energy resolution, so providing a large network of detectors with predetermined background and source templates can be an onerous task. Instead, we propose that static detectors use simple physics-informed algorithms to automatically learn the background and nuisance source signatures, which can them be used to bootstrap and feed into more complex algorithms. Specifically, we show that non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) can be used to distinguish static background from the effects of increased concentrations of radon progeny due to rainfall. We also show that a simple process of using multiple gross count rate filters can be used in real time to classify or ``triage'' spectra according to whether they belong to static, rain, or anomalous categories for processing with other algorithms. If a rain sensor is available, we propose a method to incorporate that signal as well. Two clustering methods for anomalous spectra are proposed, one using Kullback-Leibler divergence and the other using regularized NMF, with the goal of finding clusters of similar spectral anomalies that can be used to build anomaly templates. Finally we describe the issues involved in the implementation of some of these algorithms on deployed sensor nodes, including the need to monitor the background models for long-term drifting due to physical changes in the environment or changes in detector performance.

Gamma Dose Rate Measurements in Northern Spain: Influence of Local Meteorological Scenarios on Radiological "False Alarms" in a Real-Time Radiological Monitoring Network

Abstract:The present study characterizes gamma dose rate (GDR) concentrations in Bilbao, located in the northern Iberian Peninsula, utilizing a comprehensive 10-min interval database spanning from 2009 to 2018. This station belongs to the radiological environmental monitoring of the Basque Country network. The daily average GDR was found to be 0.07624 ± 0.00004 μSv/h, with the daily 95th percentile averaging 0.08026 ± 0.00007 μSv/h throughout the entire period. Our analysis specifically addresses the impact of precipitation on GDR, revealing a higher correlation coefficient for daily 95th percentile values compared to daily averages. Additionally, the influence of the Galerna (GL) event, a natural meteorological phenomenon in this region, on GDR was investigated, noting that it can develop both with and without precipitation. Understanding the interaction between GDR and this meteorological scenario is vital for the development of more reliable radiological monitoring strategies and for safeguarding public health. For this purpose, 40 GL events were analyzed. The present results indicate that GDR values frequently exceed alarm levels when a GL is formed. These GDR peaks should be considered natural radiological events, necessitating the classification of such GDR peaks as false alarms within the radiological monitoring network. To explain them in detail, 10-min time series of precipitation and radon outdoor concentrations were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the GL event with precipitation is a meteorological scenario that can be associated with false alarms. The present analysis provides a distinct contrast in radon behavior under the same meteorological event in case of being developed with precipitation or without precipitation. The findings from this analysis are crucial for avoiding and understanding false radiological alarms triggered in the monitoring network, thereby enhancing the accuracy of radiological data interpretation and improving public safety measures.

Abstract:A non-destructive method based on in-situ gamma spectroscopy is developed to determine the depth of radiological contamination in media. An innovative algorithm, Gamma Penetration Depth Unfolding Algorithm (GPDUA), uses point kernel techniques to predict the depth of contamination based on the results of the uncollided peak information from the in-situ gamma spectroscopy. The GPDUA is designed and verified through extensive Monte Carlo simulations and validated through laboratory experiments, This innovative tool promises to be "better, faster; safer, and cheaper" than the current practice in decontamination: and decommissioning. The method requires the a priori knowledge of the contaminant source distribution. The;applicable radiological contaminants of interest are any isotopes that emit two or more gamma rays per disintegration or isotopes that emit a single gamma ray but have gamma-emitting progeny in secular equilibrium with its parent (e.g., Co-60, U-235, and Cs-137 to name a few). The predicted depths from the GPDUA algorithm using: Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code simulations and laboratory experiments using Co-60 have consistently produced predicted depths within 20% of the actual or known depth.

Abstract:The detection and identification of radioactive sources in search applications involve analyzing passive gamma-ray emissions from high-level radioactive materials. This process uses a mobile detector-spectrometer in a complex field test environment. Recently, the use of artificial intelligence for gamma-ray spectrum analysis has shown promising results. However, challenges persist in identifying isotopic signatures from spectral measurements that may be distorted due to source shielding, random variations in natural radioactive background, or insufficient measurement time to obtain clear spectral lines. This paper presents a novel intelligent signature recognition method that combines digital filtering techniques with an artificial Hopfield Neural Network (HNN). The HNN leverages auto-associative memory to store training sample patterns and match them with incoming gamma spectra from distorted sources. It restores the testing sources' measurements by finding the closest matching signature patterns in the spectral library. Before HNN recognition, the measured spectrum undergoes preprocessing with a digital image filter to reduce fluctuations. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a set of gamma-ray spectra measured with a sodium iodide detector. The data collected include measurements from six pure samples: 241 Am, 60 Co, 137 Cs, 192 Ir, 239 Pu, and 235 U, which are used for training and validation (i.e. six cases). Additionally, the data set contains 24 distorted synthesized sources with various fluctuating backgrounds. Test results demonstrate the potential of the proposed method to accurately recognize the correct isotope with high precision, achieving an accuracy rate exceeding 85%. Furthermore, the proposed method exhibits superior performance compared to the conventional multiple regression fitting and simple feedforward neural network methods.

Abstract:In case of a nuclear accident, the source term is typically not known but extremely important for the assessment of the consequences to the affected population. Therefore the assessment of the potential source term is of uppermost importance for emergency response. A fully sequential method, derived from a regularized weighted least square problem, is proposed to reconstruct the emission and composition of a multiple-nuclide release using gamma dose rate measurement. The a priori nuclide ratios are incorporated into the background error covariance (BEC) matrix, which is dynamically augmented and sequentially updated. The negative estimations in the mathematical algorithm are suppressed by utilizing artificial zero-observations (with large uncertainties) to simultaneously update the state vector and BEC. The method is evaluated by twin experiments based on the JRodos system. The results indicate that the new method successfully reconstructs the emission and its uncertainties. Accurate a priori ratio accelerates the analysis process, which obtains satisfactory results with only limited number of measurements, otherwise it needs more measurements to generate reasonable estimations. The suppression of negative estimation effectively improves the performance, especially for the situation with poor a priori information, where it is more prone to the generation of negative values.

Abstract:Autonomous nuclear reactor monitoring is a key aspect of the International Atomic Energy Agency's strategy to ensure nonproliferation treaty compliance. From the rise of small modular reactor technology, decentralized nuclear reactor fleets may strain the capacities of such monitoring and requires new approaches. We demonstrate the superior capabilities of a gamma detection system to monitor the criticality of a zero power nuclear reactor from beyond typical vessel boundaries, offering a powerful alternative to neutron-based systems by providing direct information on fission chain propagation. Using the case example of the research reactor CROCUS, we demonstrate how two bismuth germanate scintillators placed outside the reactor vessel can precisely observe reactor criticality using so called noise methods and provide core status information in seconds . Our results indicate a wide range of applications due to the newly gained geometric flexibility that could find use in fields beyond nuclear safety.

Novel Algorithm for Radon Real-Time Measurements with a Pixelated Detector

Abstract:Nowadays, radon gas exposure is considered one of the main health concerns for the population because, by carrying about half the total dose due to environmental radioactivity, it is the second cause of lung cancer after smoking. Due to a relatively long half-life of 3.82 days, the chemical inertia and since its parent Ra-226 is largely diffuse on the earth's crust and especially in the building materials, radon can diffuse and potentially saturate human habitats, with a concentration that can suddenly change during the 24 h day depending on temperature, pressure, and relative humidity. For such reasons, 'real-time' measurements performed by an active detector, possibly of small dimensions and a handy configuration, can play an important role in evaluating the risk and taking the appropriate countermeasures to mitigate it. In this work, a novel algorithm for pattern recognition was developed to exploit the potentialities of silicon active detectors with a pixel matrix structure to measure radon through the α emission, in a simple measurement configuration, where the device is placed directly in air with no holder, no collection filter or electrostatic field to drift the radon progenies towards the detector active area. This particular measurement configuration (dubbed as bare) requires an α/β-discrimination method that is not based on spectroscopic analysis: as the gas surrounds the detector the α particles are emitted at different distances from it, so they lose variable energy amount in air depending on the traveled path-length which implies a variable deposited energy in the active area. The pixels matrix structure allows overcoming this issue because the interaction of α, β and γ particles generate in the active area of the detector clusters (group of pixels where a signal is read) of different shape and energy dispersion. The novel algorithm that exploits such a phenomenon was developed using a pixelated silicon detector of the TimePix family with a compact design. An α (Am-241) and a β (Sr-90) source were used to calibrate the algorithm and to evaluate its performances in terms of β rejection capability and α recognition efficiency. Successively, the detector was exposed to different radon concentrations at the ENEA-INMRI radon facility in 'bare' configuration, in order to check the linearity of the device response over a radon concentration range. The results for this technique are presented and discussed, highlighting the potential applications especially the possibility to exploit small and handy detectors to perform radon active measurements in the simplest configuration.

Abstract:Detector networks that measure environmental radiation serve as radiological surveillance and early warning networks in many countries across Europe and beyond. Their goal is to detect anomalous radioactive signatures that indicate the release of radionuclides to the environment. Often, the background H · *(10) is predicted using meteorological information. However, in dense detector networks the correlation between different detectors is expected to contain markedly more information. In this work, we investigate how the joint observations by neighbouring detectors can be leveraged to predict the background H · *(10). Treating it as a stochastic vector, we show that its distribution can be approximated as multivariate normal. We reframe the question of background prediction as a Bayesian inference problem including priors and likelihood. Finally, we show that the conditional distribution can be used to make predictions. To perform the inferences we use PyMC. All inferences are performed using real data for the nuclear sites in Doel and Mol, Belgium. We validate our calibrated model on previously unseen data. Application of the model to a case with known anomalous behaviour – observations during the operation of the BR1 reactor in Mol – highlights the relevance of our method for anomaly detection and quantification.

Effect of natural gamma background radiation on portal monitor radioisotope unmixing

Abstract:National security relies on several layers of protection. One of the most important is the traffic control at borders and ports that exploits Radiation Portal Monitors (RPMs) to detect and deter potential smuggling attempts. Most portal monitors rely on plastic scintillators to detect gamma rays. Despite their poor energy resolution, their cost effectiveness and the possibility of growing them in large sizes makes them the gamma-ray detector of choice in RPMs. Unmixing algorithms applied to organic scintillator spectra can be used to reliably identify the bare and unshielded radionuclides that triggered an alarm, even with fewer than 1,000 detected counts and in the presence of two or three nuclides at the same time. In this work, we experimentally studied the robustness of a state-of-the-art unmixing algorithm to different radiation background spectra, due to varying atmospheric conditions, in the 16 $^\circ$C to 28 $^\circ$C temperature range. In the presence of background, the algorithm is able to identify the nuclides present in unknown radionuclide mixtures of three nuclides, when at least 1,000 counts from the sources are detected. With fewer counts available, we found larger differences of approximately 35.9$\%$ between estimated nuclide fractions and actual ones. In these low count rate regimes, the uncertainty associated by our algorithm with the identified fractions could be an additional valuable tool to determine whether the identification is reliable or a longer measurement to increase the signal-to-noise ratio is needed. Moreover, the algorithm identification performances are consistent throughout different data sets, with negligible differences in the presence of background types of different intensity and spectral shape.

Detection of Nuclear Sources in Search Applications using Dynamic Quantum Clustering of Spectral Data

Abstract:In a search scenario, nuclear background spectra are continuously measured in short acquisition intervals with a mobile detector-spectrometer. Detecting sources from measured data is difficult because of low signal to noise ratio (S/N) of spectra, large and highly varying background due to naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), and line broadening due to limited spectral resolution of nuclear detector. We have invented a method for detection of sources using clustering of spectral data. Our method takes advantage of the physical fact that a source not only produces counts in the region of its spectral emission, but also has the effect on the entire detector spectrum via Compton continuum. This allows characterizing the low S/N spectrum without distinct isotopic lines using multiple data features. We have shown that noisy spectra with low S/N can be grouped by overall spectral shape similarity using a data clustering technique called Dynamic Quantum Clustering (DQC). The spectra in the same cluster can then be averaged to enhance S/N of the isotopic spectral line. This would allow for increased accuracy of isotopic identification and lower false alarm rate. Our method was validated in a proof-of principle study using a data set of spectra measured in one-second intervals with Sodium Iodide detector. The data set consisted of over 7000 spectra obtained in urban background measurements, and approximately 70 measurements of Cs-137 and Co-60 sources. Using DQC analysis, we have observed that all spectra containing Cs-137 and Co-60 signal cluster away from the background.

Abstract:Nuclear power is a sustainable energy source, but radiation management is required for its safe use. Radiation-detection technology has been developed for the safe management of radioactive materials in nuclear facilities but its performance may vary depending on the size and complexity of the structure of nuclear facilities. In this study, a nuclear monitoring system using a multi-sensor network was designed to monitor radioactive materials in a large nuclear facility. Additionally, an artificial-intelligence-based localization algorithm was developed to accurately locate radioactive materials. The system parameters were optimized using the Geant4 Application for Tomographic emission (GATE) toolkit, and the localization algorithm was developed based on the performance evaluation of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Decision Tree (D-Tree) models. In this article, we present the feasibility of the proposed monitoring system by converging the radiation detection system and artificial intelligence technology.

Abstract:The study of rare fundamental physics phenomena, such as double-beta decay, rare nuclear decays and dark matter, requires very low levels of background radiation in order to observe a signal. To achieve the required background levels, experiments are located deep underground as these facilities provide significant rock overburden and commensurate reduction in the cosmic ray flux and cosmic ray-spallation induced products. An overview of the sources of these backgrounds will be presented. Taking advantage of the deep underground laboratory spaces, there have been a growing number of underground measurements in other fields, including environmental monitoring, benchmarking of other physical techniques, Life Science studies in low background environments, and material selection. The exceptional sensitivity and high resolution of high-purity germanium detectors allows for very sensitive measurements using gamma-ray spectrometry. Their use has been increasing as they allow for non-destructive measurements of experiment components, which can be directly used if they meet specified background requirements. This paper will discuss the current most sensitive ultra-low background germanium detectors in operation and explain how to achieve the best level of background reduction to attain the best sensitivities. In addition, an overview of several complementary low background measurement methods will be discussed. A proposed program to cross calibrate germanium detectors at several laboratories will be described and a searchable database used to store radioactivity measurements of experimental materials will be introduced.

Abstract:Gamma-ray spectroscopy is an essential tool in nuclear science, nuclear security, and environmental monitoring. However, challenges arise in interpreting spectral data due to the presence of low counts, multiple sources, and dynamic backgrounds. To address these issues, a novel feature-driven analytical approach for gamma-ray spectral analysis using machine-learning techniques is developed. The method utilizes a series of random forest models for in-distribution (ID) multi-label classification, and the model-derived feature importance values to guide the out-of-distribution (OOD) detection task. The performance of this approach is quantitatively evaluated across various spectral parameters, including acquisition time, number of sources, energy of an OOD source, and background composition. Increasing the acquisition time from 1 s to 100 s leads to improved performance for multi-label classification, with 22 sources achieving F 1 -scores ≥ 0.9 after 50 s acquisitions for a CLLBC handheld detector and a standoff distance of 30 cm. The feature-driven analytical approach also demonstrates robustness when handling complex source mixtures. Furthermore, it provides contextual energetic information for OOD detection. The results presented here highlight the interpretability of the approach, establishing clear links between the spectral features and underlying physics. Moreover, the approach effectively distinguishes overlapping spectral signatures of different ID gamma-ray sources, enhancing human reliability in machine learning-based gamma-ray spectral analysis. Source term inversion of short-lived nuclides in complex nuclear accidents based on machine learning using off-site gamma dose rate

Abstract:During nuclear accidents, large amounts of short-lived radionuclides are released into the environment, causing acute health hazards to local populations. Therefore, it is particularly important to obtain source-term information to assist nuclear emergency decision makers in determining emergency protective measures. However, it is extremely difficult to obtain reliable contaminant monitoring instrument readings to estimate the source term based on core conditions, release routes, and release conditions. Currently, a wide variety of source-term inversion methods are attracting increasing attention. In this study, the release rates of four typical short-lived nuclides (Kr-88, Sr-91, Te-132, I-131) in two complex nuclear accident scenarios were estimated using a machine-learning method. The results show that the best estimation performance is obtained with the long short-term memory network, and the mean absolute percentage errors for the release rates of the four nuclides at 10 h under the two nuclear accidents are 9.87% and 11.08%, 17.49% and 16.51%, 7.16% and 8.35%, and 38.83% and 41.87%, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean absolute percentage errors for Te-132 (7.16% and 8.35%) were the lowest among all the estimated nuclides. In addition, stability analysis showed that the gamma dose rate was the key parameter affecting the estimation accuracy.

Abstract:The paper is based on experiments within a project to prepare tutorial tasks on a training centre for testing radiation detectors fixed on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and in unmanned ground vehicles. The paper reports on a small UAV with NaI(Tl) 2" x 2" detector for radiation monitoring in an emergency event and for radioactive source chasing and detection. The paper is focused on some special cases with the possibility to determine local air kerma rates and the activities of point sources. The detector was calibrated for air kerma rates from 5 nGy h −1 to 20 μGy h −1 . The verified model of the NaI(Tl) 2′′ x 2′′ detector including the electronic module assembled on a UAV was designed in a Monte Carlo simulation. The model was used for calculating the air kerma rates at various altitudes above the ground both for a natural background and for selected point sources. The response functions for 137 Cs, 131 I, 192 Ir, 60 Co and 99 Mo point sources were calculated by the Monte Carlo simulation to estimate their activities. Experiments were carried out with an NaI(Tl) 2" x 2" detector fixed on a Robodrone UAV and flying over 60 Co and 137 Cs point sources over the airfield area and the local air kerma rates and the activities of the point sources were calculated with the AGAMA post-processing program. In addition, the response functions for 137 Cs distributed uniformly on the surface were calculated by Monte Carlo simulation for future emergency purposes. The detection limits of selected man-made nuclides (point sources) were calculated.

Abstract:The European decommissioning and dismantling (D &D) market of nuclear facilities is characterized by significant long-term growth. The EU-funded CLEANDEM project aims to develop a technological breakthrough for D &D operations that will save time, reduce costs, and minimize human intervention while increasing safety. The project will deliver a cyber-physical system using an unmanned ground vehicle platform equipped with innovative radiological sensing probes. In the framework of the CLEANDEM project, the main goal of this work is to study an alternative solution, i.e., the NaIL detector, to upgrade and integrate the neutron/gamma detection capability to the platform for radiological survey applications. The study consists in characterizing a 2" 2" NaIL detector in terms of energy resolution, full-energy peak gamma efficiency, thermal neutron/gamma discrimination capability, neutron efficiency, and gamma rejection ratio (at high counting rate). Besides, the time resolution and the decay time components of the neutron and gamma-ray induced signals have been reported. Experiments were combined with Monte Carlo simulations, using GEANT4 v10.7, to complement the characterization. The Monte Carlo simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, an online analysis software has been developed to perform a simple radiological survey in laboratory conditions.
