Abstract:Diesel equipment used in underground production and transportation will produce a large amount of diesel particulate matter (DPM), which seriously pollutes the fresh air in underground and endangers the life and health of miners. In order to study the diffusion and distribution of DPM, this paper based on CFD numerical simulation technology, carries out numerical simulation of airflow and DPM field in heading face. The results show that from 15 s to 60 s, DPM continuously accumulates in the blind zone of the airflow and on both sides of the monorail locomotive, with the DPM concentration greater than 1.2 × 10−7 kg/m3. At this time, the DPM cloud is 60 m in the horizontal direction, and shows a distribution characteristic of high in the middle and low on both sides. When T = 90 s, part of DPM diffuses to the roadway exit. At this time, in the entire roadway, starting from a section of 23 m away from the heading face, the DPM concentration sharply increases, reaching a peak of 2.91 × 10-7 kg/m3 at 33 m. Then it begins to decline slowly. The research results are of great significance to clean production in mines.

Abstract:Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is carcinogenic to humans. Underground miners have a high risk of over-exposure to high concentrations of DPM. To control DPM effectively, it is essential to understand the DPM dispersion characteristics. In this study, the DPM distributions of three key and representative mining activities, shotcreting, charging and loading activity, in an underground development face were studied. A computational model for the mining activities was developed using 3D imagery, onsite data and OpenFOAM. Tracer gas experiments were first conducted in the underground mine for the validation of CFD simulation. The simulations were carried out at a steady-state using the standard k-ε turbulence model, and the transport and dispersion of DPM were modelled using a segregated species transport model. DPM distribution characteristics for each mining activity were analysed, and the regions with high concentration (>0.1 mg/m3) were identified, and the reasons for the high concentrations were also discussed. At last, the efficiency of the current auxiliary ventilation system on DPM dilution was evaluated based on the simulation results. The results show that a broader region with high DPM concentration was identified in the downstream of the loader during the loading activity, and this issue could be solved by simply increasing the ventilation rate. The findings in this paper could be used for optimizing the auxiliary ventilation design for future mining activities in this development face.

Abstract:WC55-Y hydraulic support transporters allow an efficient transport of support equipment in fully mechanized mining faces. However, the diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted by these transporters seriously pollutes the air environment along mine roadways, endangering the health of coal mine workers. In this paper, we simulated the diffusion dispersion of DPM during the functioning of a WC55-Y hydraulic support transporter (emitting high amounts of exhaust pollutants) by computational fluid dynamics, identifying high DPM concentration zones. While the transporter was driven along a coal auxiliary transportation roadway, the diffusion–dispersion characteristics of DPM changed: DPM reached a long horizontal diffusion distance and a high concentration. We found that to avoid the inhalation of DPM and reduce its potential harm, coal mine workers should keep a distance of at least 21.27 m from the hydraulic support transporter while the vehicle runs along the roadway. Moreover, according to our simulation, the operators responsible for disassembling the hydraulic support transporter should wear protective equipment with good filterability while unloading it. Overall, the findings of this study can be applied to outline new work practice guidelines and design new optimum auxiliary ventilation for reducing underground miner exposure to DPM.

Abstract:To investigate the evolution of CO and NOx pollution in the exhaust gas from diesel-powered shuttles under the double lane ventilation system of short-walled continuous mining face, this article uses a combination of numerical simulation and field tests to numerically simulate and analyze the pollution transport law of CO and NOx emitted from the shuttles at three locations: heading tunnel, contact alley and supporting tunnel. The results show that when the shuttle car in heading tunnel, the CO and NOx discharged from the shuttle discharge port move toward the exit of the tunnel at an average speed of 1.25 m/s. The high CO and NOx concentration area appears at the discharge port, with the highest CO volume fraction of 82.5 ppm and the highest NOx volume fraction of 28.25 ppm. When the shuttle car at the contact alley, by the two walls of the alleyway on the gas diffusion space extrusion effect, CO and NOx in X = 37.5 m ~ 42.5 m range gathered, appear high CO and NOx concentration band. When the shuttle car in supporting tunnel, it is hindered by the belt conveyor within the range of X = 63 m ~ 64.5 m, so CO and NOx fail to spread to the outlet of the roadway in time and pile up at the bottom of the roadway. The highest CO volume fraction is 76.25 ppm and the highest NOx volume fraction is 28.28 ppm.According to the different positions of the car, the pollution areas of CO and NOx exceeding the specified threshold (24 ppm, 2.5 ppm) were divided, and the distribution characteristics of CO and NOx pollution were obtained by quantitative analysis through curve fitting, which provided a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of harmful substances emitted by fuel power equipment in underground environment.

Abstract:To scientifically and effectively manage exhaust pollution in underground confined spaces and reduce hazards from personnel exhaust exposure, a systematic study of the distribution characteristics of diesel locomotive exhaust emissions in mines is needed. Aiming at large underground coal mining operations, an experimental platform for the physical simulation of vehicle exhaust transport in restricted spaces is designed and created. The Hongliulin Coal Mine in Shaanxi Province, China, is used as a prototype, and the platform consists of a coal mining face system, ventilation system, exhaust emission system, monitoring and surveillance system, and control platform. The experimental platform with carbon dioxide simulation of diesel exhaust pollution, in the role of different wind speed, the concentration of carbon dioxide is a downward trend, the wind speed is in the low wind speed on the 0.2 m of the concentration difference of 25.75%; the experimental platform exhaust transport process presents a clear "three-zone" change rule; experimental platform carbon dioxide concentration and the field nitrogen dioxide concentration change trend is consistent. The platform functions and features can provide guidance for mine exhaust management and exhaust exposure hazard prevention and control.
Numerical study on temporal and spatial distribution of particulate matter under multi-vehicle working conditions

Abstract:The high growth in the use of underground diesel vehicles has led to a large number of exhaust pollutants, especially particulate matter (PM), which is a serious threat to the lives and health of underground personnel. In this paper, based on numerical simulations and field measurements, the temporal and spatial distribution of PM in the exhaust of two vehicles and the impact on the health of underground personnel was analyzed. The results showed that in both conditions, the airflow velocity between two vehicles showed a zonal distribution, and there was an airflow vortex in the chamber under the interaction of the wind. When the vehicles were running in the same direction into the wind, PM with a concentration range of 15.79–26.32 mg/m 3 could reach the height of the human respiratory belt and was mainly distributed on the east side of the roadway. Therefore, underground personnel should avoid approaching the right area of the vehicle body. In addition, PM concentration around the driver position of the vehicle was still higher than the human contact limit, so the drivers of the vehicle would need personal protection. When the vehicles were running in the same direction with the wind, compared with the airflow inlet side, the amount of PM on the airflow outlet side increased more obviously with time, especially for PM with a concentration range of 21.05–31.58 mg/m 3 . Also, partial PM flowed into the chamber with the airflow, such that personnel should avoid being located on the downwind side of the vehicle, and personnel in the chamber should also have personal protection.

Abstract:The surface operations area of an underground coal mine near Lingwu in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was selected for this study. Particulate matter (PM) was sampled in the coal screening plant during the day and night in Spring and Winter, 2019. Twelve trace metals and eight water-soluble ions in particulate matter up to 10 μm in diameter (PM10) and total suspended particles (TSP) were analyzed using ICP-OES and ion chromatography, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) and positive matrix fraction (PMF) were used to identify potential sources of particulate metals. The forward trajectory model was used to analyze the main migration pathways of particles. Results showed that higher concentrations of PM10 and TSP were found in Spring than in Winter; the concentration of PM at night was lower than during the day. Most of the trace metals in TSP were greater than in PM10, while the content of most water-soluble ions in TSP was lower than in PM10. The EF analysis confirmed that particulate metals were attributable to anthropogenic emission. PMF model results further demonstrated that the main sources of PM in both seasons were regional suspended dust, traffic emission, industrial emission and coal burning. Air mass dispersion analysis showed that PM generated by these operations may spread to eastern and southeastern China within 72 h in Spring, while mainly to southeastern and southern China in Winter. These suggest a need for greater focus on strengthening the monitoring and early warning of the presence of atmospheric PM in southern Shanxi, China. Because of the risks that particulate metals pose to human health, the protection of children should be strengthened around the surface operation area of an underground coal mine. Moreover, monitoring of the concentrations of Cr in PM10 and Mn in TSP in Spring should be strengthened, and the opposite procedure should be adopted in Winter. These findings are useful for providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of pollutants in underground mining areas and the construction of cleaner production lines.

Abstract:To explore the laws of variations in the evolution of dust pollution within a double tunnel ventilation system at a short wall continuous mining face, a numerical simulation of air flow movement was conducted in this study. Results showed that after the wind flowing in the supporting and heading tunnels reached the head, the wind sides returned at speeds of 6.5 and 10.3 m/s, respectively. Affected by the air volume and pressure differences between the two tunnels, part of the air flow entered the connecting tunnel at an average speed of 0.8 m/s and moved to the heading tunnel. Affected by the turbulence at the driving face, a high dust concentration zone with a maximum dust concentration of 1700 mg/m3 was formed in the tunnels at a distance of 15 m from the heading. Dust blocked by the shuttle car accumulated and settled near it and formed a dust zone with an approximate average concentration of 750 mg/m3 at a distance of 19–23 m from the heading. The dust produced by the bolt machine formed a dust mass with an average concentration of 900 mg/m3 at a distance of 0.5–4.5 m from the head. Quantitative analyses of the changes in dust concentration with time at the position of a driver of the continuous mining machine, shuttle car, and anchor bolt machine were conducted, and functional formulae for the quadratic distribution were obtained. Suggestions for dust control were then proposed.

Abstract:In the confined spaces of underground mines, the exposure of over 10,000 miners in the U.S. to diesel exhaust and diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational inevitability, particularly in metal and nonmetal mineral extraction. These workers routinely operate amidst diesel-powered equipment, often outdated and highly polluting, extracting resources such as limestone, gold, and salt. The acute health effects of such exposure are significant, leading to symptoms like headaches and flu-like conditions, with the impact being more pronounced in these closed work environments. This review scrutinizes DPM's hazard in the mining sector, consolidating the extant knowledge and exploring ongoing research. It encapsulates our understanding of DPM's physicochemical properties, existing sampling methods, health ramifications, and mitigation technologies. Moreover, it underscores the necessity for further study in areas such as the evolution of DPM's physicochemical attributes, from its genesis at high-pressure, high-temperature conditions within diesel engines to its emission into the mine atmosphere. A key research gap is the intricate interaction of DPM with specific characteristics of the mine environment—such as relative humidity, ambient temperature, the presence of other mineral dust, and the dynamics of ventilation air. These factors can significantly alter the physicochemical profile of DPM, influencing both its in-mine transport and its deposition behavior. Consequently, this can affect the respiratory health of miners, modifying the toxicity and the respiratory deposition of DPM particles. Identified research imperatives include (1) the advancement of instrumentation for accurate number measurement of DPM to replace or supplement traditional gravimetric methods; (2) the development of long-lasting, cost-effective control technologies tailored for the mining industry; (3) an in-depth investigation of DPM interactions within the unique mine microclimate, considering the critical components like humidity and other aerosols; and (4) understanding the differential impact of DPM in mining compared to other industries, informing the creation of mining-specific health and safety protocols. This review's findings underscore the urgency to enhance emission control and exposure prevention strategies, paving the way for a healthier underground mining work environment.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most harmful exhaust pollutants to human health. In this study, the PM diffusion and distribution emitted by trackless rubber-tyred vehicle under different driving conditions in coal mine were analyzed with numerical simulations and field measurements. The results show that when the vehicle velocity was constant, the PM concentration of the trackless rubber-tyred vehicle decreased with increasing distance from the exhaust pipe orifice. In addition, the proportion of PM with a concentration below 10 mg/m 3 was the highest owing to the influences of diffusion and airflow dilution. However, when the diffusion distance is less than 3 m, the PM concentration far exceeds the occupational exposure limit (10 mg/m 3 ). In this case, underground personnel should stay away from the area near and along the exhaust pipe as far as possible. With increasing vehicle velocity, the PM concentration gradient at a diffusion distance of 0–6 m showed the most significant slope. Besides, the concentration fluctuation of PM was the largest and relatively high when the diffusion distance was 5–15 m. Therefore, the area 15 m from the exhaust gas pipe opening of the trackless rubber-tyred vehicle should be controlled. In addition, the relative errors between the measured and numerical simulation results were mostly less than 10%, which proved that the numerical simulation results were reliable.

Abstract:The particulate matter (PM) in coal mining can bring pollution to the surrounding environment and have an adverse effect on human health. In order to prevent and control the PM pollution in coal mine and better understand the PM transportation in the air, spatial and temporal distribution of PM concentration in two typical coal mining methods – opencast and above-ground of underground coal mines – were studied in the arid desert region of northwest China. The mass concentrations of particulate matters, i.e., PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and TSP (total suspended particulate), were monitored by portable environmental PM meter during two windy seasons — spring and winter. The results show that the PM concentrations in both mining areas all exceeded a certain range of concentration limits. In the opencast mine, high concentrations of PM appeared in the mining area (MA), while it was concentrated in the coal yard (CY) in the above-ground of underground mine. The variations of pollution index (PI) showed similar patterns in both spring and winter at the opencast and above-ground of underground mine area respectively. In the opencast mine, the PM10 and TSP concentrations varied more obviously from season to season and from area to area than the concentrations of PM1 and PM2.5. Barometric pressure had the most significant influence on PM1, PM2.5 and PM10. Wind speed had the greatest influence on TSP. In the above-ground of underground mine, the variation patterns of the concentration of the four different-sized particulate matters were basically the same from area to area. The concentrations of PM1 and PM2.5 had greater seasonal variation than PM10 and TSP. The most important meteorological factors were temperature and barometric pressure for PM1 and PM2.5, while air relative humidity had the greatest impact on PM10 and TSP.

Comprehensive evaluation of potential coal mine dust emissions in an open-pit coal mine in Northwest China

Abstract:Coal mining in China is continually increasing, and the associated emitted coal mine dust is of growing environmental and occupational concern. In this study, deposited coal mine dust (DD) was analysed in three different regions of an active, highly-volatile bituminous open-pit coal mine in the Xingjian Province, Northwest of China: coal working fronts, tailings handling sites, and road traffic sites. Samples were analysed for particle size, and geochemical and mineralogical patterns, and then compared with the respirable DD fractions (RDDs, <4 μm) separated from DD samples. Online measurements of ambient air concentrations of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), black carbon (BC) and ultrafine particles (UFP) were performed in the same mine zones where DD was sampled.Furthermore, the RDD samples were subjected to analysis of specific biological response or toxicological indicators (oxidative potential, OP). The results demonstrated: i) large differences in particle size and composition among DD from tailings handling, road traffic and coal working front sites, ii) a strong influence of the DD moisture contents and ash yields on particle size, and, accordingly, on the potential dust emissions, iii) an enrichment of multiple elements (such as Nb, Th, Cr, Sr, Li, As, Pb, Cu, Zr and Ni) in the RDD from coal working fronts compared with their contents in the worked parent coal seams, mostly attributed to mining machinery, tyre and brake wear emissions and to deposition of dust emitted from gangue working zones, iv) low OP values of the RDD emitted from the studied mine, which works a high-quality coal, with OP being influenced by Mn, sulphate and anatase (TiO2) contents, and v) the impact of specific mining operations and mine areas on the levels of air pollutants, such as high PM from tailings handling in the upper parts of the mine or the high UFP levels in the bottom of the mine (due to vehicle and machinery emissions and lower dispersive conditions). The data presented here demonstrate the necessity of extracting the more deeply respirable size fraction of coal mine dusts in future studies on the health effects of these materials because this finer fraction is mineralogically and geochemically different from the parent rocks.

Abstract:As the main tool for transporting people and materials in coal mines with inclined shafts, fuel vehicles easily cause exhaust gas accumulation and significant pollution due to the special underground environment. In this paper, the problem of exhaust gas migration under the action of a special airflow field in underground confined space is studied. First, a physical model of exhaust gas migration in the confined space of an underground coal mine is established. By combining numerical simulations with field measurements, the law of exhaust gas migration of fuel vehicles under the action of an airflow field in a confined space is studied. The results show that the migration and diffusion of CO gas in exhaust gas are affected by airflow, and the concentration decreases with an increasing distance. The main irregular pollution area is concentrated within one meter of the space behind the vehicle. The pollution area of more than 24 ppm is approximately 0.124 m 2 , the pollution length is approximately 0.767 m, and the pollution width and height are 1.16 m and 1.83 m, respectively. In the adjustable range of the research conditions and air speed, the increase in the air speed can accelerate the dilution of CO gas, but it needs to be maintained in a reasonable air speed range. In this paper, a theoretical basis for exploring the migration and distribution of fuel vehicle exhaust pollution in confined spaces is provided.

Abstract:Abstract Tail gas emitted by underground trackless rubber wheel cars poses a serious threat to the health and safety of underground workers. To effectively reduce the tail gas concentration of a comprehensive excavation face, this study adopted a numerical simulation method to investigate the influence of air suction volume Q and distance L between trackless rubber wheel cars and headfaces on the diffusion law of diesel particulate matter, CO, and NO x under long suction and short pressure ventilation. The results showed that under the condition of L = 20 m, the trackless rubber wheel car is closer to the suction air duct. At this point, when Q = 600 m 3 /min, the tail gas control effect in the roadway is optimum. In addition, under the condition of L = 40 m, the trackless rubber wheel car is in the middle of the roadway. At this point, when Q = 300 m 3 /min, the tail gas control effect in the roadway is optimum. When L = 60 m and Q = 200 m 3 /min, the ventilation mode in the roadway is mainly pressure-in ventilation. The high-volume-fraction NO x region and the medium-volume-fraction NO x region under this air volume are small.

Abstract:Diesel exhaust is a major cause of large number of occupational diseases. Acute and continuous exposure to DPM can cause numerous health issues including respiratory disease, lung disease, heart disease, etc. The NIOSH and the IARC consider DPM as 'probable carcinogenic' and 'carcinogenic', respectively. In large underground M/NM mines, DPM regulatory compliance is challenging. This paper primarily focuses on the evolution and application of real-time DPM monitoring in mining. This study discusses different monitors performance, their applications, and prospects of DPM monitoring in mining. This paper also presents an overview of core issues of using diesel equipment in underground mines and summarises existing DPM regulations in US and other countries.

Abstract:To locally atomize the spatial confinement of primary dust generated by the shearer cut-off, the CFD-DPM mathematical model was used to simulate and analyze the wind-borne dust transport law, which resulted in the heavily polluted area of primary dust. A multi-level and multi-dimensional coal machine spray system was developed for the polluted area, its atomization effect was verified by using the TAB breakup model. The results show that the heavily polluted area of primary dust is mainly concentrated in the position of fully mechanized mining face Z=24-39 m area of shearer, and the average concentration is 738.2 mg/m3. The average concentration of droplets generated by the multi-level and multi-dimensional shearer spray system at the shearer drum is 0.66 kg/m3, with a percentage of droplets with particle size between 40 and 160 mu m exceeding 85 %. The coverage rate of the shearer drum is 95 %. The relationship between droplet concentration and time is consistent with the Boltzmann function fitting model. Following the implementation of the multi-level and multidimensional coal machine spray system in the field, it was observed that the average reduction in dust levels was 90.9 % for total dust and 85.7 % for exhaled dust in the synthesized mining face.

Abstract:Dust pollution is a critical challenge in achieving green mining of open-pit coal mines. The scientific basis for dust prevention and management hinges on a thorough understanding of the long-term characteristics of dust pollution. However, analyzing the characteristics of long-term dust pollution in open-pit coal mines has always been a void in research due to the effect of the mines' geographical location and operating conditions. This research investigated the dust pollution and delved into its key production and meteorological influencing elements in a cold-region open pit coal mining. The real-time data was monitored on-site during the four seasons of the year. The characteristics of dust pollution were determined by statistical analysis. The main factors affecting the dust concentration in different seasons were calculated using the comprehensive grey correlation degree. Finally, dust pollution from the mine to the surrounding area was simulated using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model. The results revealed that dust pollution was most serious in winter, followed by autumn, spring, and summer. The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 exceed the national limit. Meteorological elements that substantially impact dust concentration vary season by season. The dew point temperature in spring, the solar radiation in summer and autumn, and the boundary layer height in winter were the most important elements. Mining activities pollute the surrounding areas more in winter, followed by autumn and spring. During the winter, the pollution is concentrated in Shanxi, while in the autumn and spring, it is concentrated in Inner Mongolia. Based on the research findings, optimal mine design strategies can be devised to avoid and regulate dust in mining and neighboring areas, especially during winter.

Abstract:Underground miners in Australia are facing continued threats from dust-related diseases. To address these issues, improved knowledge of airflow migration patterns and respirable dust dispersion characteristics within a continuous-miner-driven heading under an exhausting ventilation system is required. Based on site-specific conditions of a development heading in New South Wales, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was constructed and validated with onsite dust monitoring data, where a good agreement was achieved. Three scenarios of coal cutting at the middle, floor and roof positions were considered and simulated, with dust generated at four different sources. The simulation results indicated that the operators on the left-hand-side (LHS) with the extraction duct should be equipped with fit-for-purpose personal protective equipment and stay behind the ventilation duct inlet during coal cutting process, while miners standing at the right-hand-side (RHS) of the continuous miner for roof and rib bolting and machine operating should stay immediately behind the roof and rib bolting rig where dust concentration is relatively low. In addition, an increase in airflow rate through the exhausting ventilation duct or a reduction in the distance from the duct inlet to the heading face assisted in reducing dust levels within the heading, particularly at the LHS of the continuous miners. Finally, compared to the scenario of the current ventilation scheme, an on-board exhausting ventilation system could improve dust removal performance, with dust concentration at the breathing level reducing by approximately 43.6%. This modelling study can advance the understanding of multi-source dust diffusion characteristics in the heading face and provide guidance on dust mitigation, thus improving the health and safety of miners and creating a cleaner underground working environment.

Abstract:To reduce the impact of high-concentration RD on the physical and mental health of miners, numerical simulations were conducted on the coupling movement law of airflow-RD under the condition of cutting-advancing support dust sources and the distribution characteristics of the spray field in the mining face based on the computational fluid dynamics theory. Besides, a spatial stereoscopic dust control and removal technology for fully mechanized mining faces were proposed according to the structural characteristics of the shearer and hydraulic supports. The results show that the dust generated by advancing support constantly settles in the process of airflow movement and superimposes with the cutting-induced dust around the front drum to form a high-concentration (the highest concentration exceeding 1000 mg/m 3 ) RD mass (length about 18 m, width about 2.1 m and height about 1.8 m). The droplets sprayed by the novel high-efficiency atomization equipment can cover the area with high concentration of RD, and the concentration of spray droplets is much higher than that of RD, which can effectively realize dust control. After the application of the spatial stereoscopic dust control and removal technology, the average removal rates of TD, RD and coal dust reach 92.9%, 91.7% and 92.3%, respectively. The application of this technology can effectively improve the mining face environment, reduce the incidence of safety accidents and pneumoconiosis and ensure the safety production of coal enterprises and the occupational health of miners.
